Mary Beale

Mary Beale, née Cradock, (bapt. 26.03.1633 - bur. 08.10.1699) was the daughter of the rector John Cradock and his wife, Dorothy Brunton. Her mother died when she was ten years old. Not a lot is known about her youth other than her having gotten a new guardian during the Civil War.

When she was eighteen years old, she married Charles Beale. He helped her a great deal during her time as a painter, such as being her studio manager, pigment mixer. They were described as working mostly equally. She had three sons, of which two survived.

Taking great care to build up a respectable reputation was her sensible choice of portrait sitters. Clergymen, various members of the nobility and even Queen Henrietta Maria wished to be painted by her.

Mary died at the age of sixty-five. She was buried in St James' Church in Picadilly, where her tomb was destroyed in the Blitz of the Second World War.

Letters From Watson, Catching Up

The Musgrave Ritual part 3: fun bits! - I didn’t point it out in the last part, but I love how Musgrave immediately catches on to the scavenger hunt and starts helping. Especially because he knows the ins and outs of the house.

- Obviously there is immediately a corpse. And a crime scene reconstruction. I do like that Holmes admits that he has no idea whether it was an accident or on purpose that Brunton was trapped in the treasure chamber: contrary to many pastiches and modern adaptations he does not always have, or need, every single fact of the case.  - Also, the treasure. The absolute lack of fabulousness of the treasure! I admit that the first time I read this story with not a lot of historical knowledge (my known English monarchs skipped from allegedly King Arthur to Queen Elizabeth to Queen Victoria) the shabby condition of the artifacts made me think they were much more than two hundred odd years old. As an adult who has been to two archaeology digs I appreciate the realism: important things are seldom shiny! Granted, my best two finds were a left-handed pot sherd and a shred of china.  - On the subject of archaeology: every aspect of this discovery is a disaster and it makes me itch. First you remove the artifacts from their context with zero documentation, then you chuck them into a lake. Zero of ten stars all around. 

- Honestly, thousands of stolen artifacts filling the British museum and things that actually belong there thrown away in a pond. I have a grudge against Victorian era archaeologists that only starts with Heinrich Schliemann. - It’s currently VERY hard to quickly google information about Queen Elizabeth 1 or King Charles 1 and get answers, so I’m not going to do a deep dive (tonight) on whether this “ancient crown of the kings of England” (which didn’t exactly make me think that Charles 1 wasn’t some time in the 10th century) directly contradicts any knowledge of actual Elizabethan and immediately post-Elizabethan crowns. Hey British royal family, could you make it easier on historians and pick a new name, ever?

David Stevenson the Scottish lighthouse designer and engineer was born on January 11th  1815 in Edinburgh.

Born at 2 Baxters Place at the top of Leith Walk the son of Hean Smith and engineer Robert Stevenson. He was a brother of the lighthouse engineers, Alan and Thomas Stevenson. David Stevenson was educated at the High School in Edinburgh then studied at the University of Edinburgh.

Between 1854 and 1880 David Stevenson designed many lighthouses, all with his brother Thomas. In addition, he helped Richard Henry Brunton design lighthouses for Japan, inventing a novel method for allowing them to withstand earthquakes. His sons David Alan Stevenson and Charles Alexander Stevenson continued his work after his death, building nearly thirty further lighthouses.

The photographs are of the splendidly name lighthouse just off Shetland, called  Muckle Flugga.  The name comes from Old Norse, Mikla Flugey, meaning "large steep-sided island". It has frequently been noted on lists of unusual place names

It was first lit on 11th October 1854 and stands 15 metres above sea level 

According to local folklore, Muckle Flugga and nearby Out Stack were formed when two giants, Herman and Saxa, fell in love with the same mermaid. They fought over her by throwing large rocks at each other, one of which became Muckle Flugga. To get rid of them, the mermaid offered to marry whichever one would follow her to the North Pole. They both followed her and drowned, as neither could swim!

Eight men of the 46th Battalion who were members of a company of 127 who captured 500 Germans from the Hindenburg Line, near Bellenglise, in the advance of 19 and 20 September, 1918. Apropos of this and similar incidents, a German battalion commander captured in the operations, when asked how it was possible for the Australians to take so many prisoners with so few casualties against such a strong position, replied 'your men are so brave and have so much dash it is impossible to stop them'.
