February 2021: As Ethan begins looking for a way back up, he is attacked and disarmed by Chris Redfield, who angrily tells Ethan he is in the way. Ethan again confronts him for killing Mia, at which point Chris finally explains that the “Mia” he shot in their home was in fact Miranda, who is capable of transforming her appearance at will and kidnapped the real Mia some time ago. Miranda, obviously, survived their initial assault, and broke free from their convoy as they attempted to transport her, Ethan, and Rose away from the Winters’ home. Ethan demands to know why Chris didn’t tell him, and Chris can only say that he didn’t want Ethan getting involved and getting himself killed. He relents as Ethan continues to ask questions, explaining that everything in the Village, from the Lycans to the lords, was created by Miranda using the Mold. His men have recently seen Miranda transporting the relic containing Rose to an area outside of the Village, which Ethan has already learned is to be the beginning of a ceremony in which Miranda intends to resurrect her daughter, Evangeline, using Rose as a vessel for her consciousness. The Megamycete, the Mold colony beneath the Village, has a remarkable ability to catalog and store information, meaning that it contains a recreation of every person who ever died near it or while infected by Mold from its colony. Using her affinity for the Mold and her ability to command the Megamycete, Miranda will channel Evangeline’s consciousness into Rose’s body to resurrect her at the cost of Rose’s life. Ethan wants to go after Miranda right away, but Chris insists he won’t be able to take her on alone. He stays behind to plant explosives beneath the factory to destroy the monsters inside, and sends Ethan to the surface with a tank he found left behind by Heisenberg, and has since repaired for use against Miranda. He instructs Ethan to “stay under the radar,” defeatedly impressed with his determination to stay in the fight, and the two part ways. Unfortunately for Chris’ plans, Heisenberg finds Ethan as soon as he reaches the surface, and a fight breaks out. As they clash, Chris succeeds in destroying the factory, and Ethan eventually manages to kill Heisenberg. After the fight, Chris contacts Ethan, who informs him that he has taken down Heisenberg. Chris tells him to wait for him to get to the surface before attempting to confront Miranda, but Ethan is distracted by the sound of a baby crying, and drops his phone. Mia appears on the battlefield, but Ethan almost immediately realizes she is actually Miranda. He pulls a gun on her, but his bullets have no effect on her, as Miranda returns to her own appearance and summons large, tree-like structures from below the ground, pulled up from the Megamycete. She explains that Rose is special, and could eventually come to control the Megamycete in its entirety. As such, she is the perfect vessel for her deceased daughter. Though Ethan tries to fight back, Miranda is almost able to teleport using the Megamycete. As she and Ethan go back and forth, she reveals herself to have been the strange old woman he previously met in the Village. She implies that Rose’s uniqueness is due to her parentage, and that Ethan himself is something unique. Before Ethan can do much, a root-like extension of the Megamycete pierces him through the chest, becoming Miranda’s arm as she rises from the ground and tears his heart out. Ethan remains conscious for exactly 29 seconds afterwards, hearing as Miranda tells him he, too, will be cataloged by the Megamycete, but is too late to save his daughter. Miranda leaves his body there, dissipating into a flock of crows and fleeing the scene.

February 2021: Ethan wakes up in a river outside the Village, where he is soon confronted by a mocking Eveline, who explains that he is dead. Ethan insists he still has to save Rose, and tries to get back on his feet, but Eveline continues, informing him that he has been dead ever since the Baker incident. Despite this revelation and Eveline’s insistence that he won’t ever see his family again, Ethan resolves to save his daughter, regaining his strength. His vision is overwhelmed by a blinding white light, and he wakes up again, this time actually regaining consciousness. He is in the back of The Duke’s merchant cart, who seems to be aware of the entire situation. Ethan requests that he take him to Miranda, and he explains that is where they are already going. He warns Ethan that his body is “falling apart,” and asks him if he is sure, but of course, he is. Ethan asks The Duke what exactly he is, but he claims he himself does not know. He tells Ethan that there will be no going back after this, and Ethan reaffirms that he is ready to face Miranda. He finds Miranda just before she has completed the ceremony to bring her daughter back, in time to overhear as she realizes her powers are leaving her. Ethan attempts to take Rose away from her, but she resists, only to be shot in the head by Chris’ squad. She shoves Ethan away, becoming a more monstrous version of herself and attacking. Ethan and Miranda engage in combat, and for some fucking reason Chris’ squad doesn’t step in to help. I hate you Capcom. Miranda uses the Megamycete to attack Ethan as the fight progresses, displaying a number of concerning powers such as energy projection and regeneration. In the end, Ethan manages to overwhelm Miranda, and she calcifies, calling out for her daughter one last time as she finally dies. The Megamycete growths begins to recede, and Ethan finds Rose where Miranda left her. However, his body is beginning to calcify, too. Chris finds Ethan, and desperately attempts to bring both him and Rose out of the Village as the Megamycete reacts to the chaos, causing a number of growths to rise from the ground. Chris explains that the explosives his squad has planted will bring down the entire village, and they need to get clear. On the outskirts of the Village, Ethan hands Rose to Chris, pulling back. He manages to grab the detonator from Chris as a Megamycete growth separates them, and stumbles back into the Village, forcing Chris to flee with Rose. Ethan waits as long as he can, pulling the trigger on the detonator just before he collapses, finally dead.
