Tavinkas looked at her, considering what she was suggesting. Maybe his past didn't matter in her opinion, but it felt like a stream he was trying to drink from, only for it to slip through his fingers before ever touching his lips. But when it was close, it was a vile smell, almost like a poison.
And yet part of him ached for it. For that red crimson poison to touch his lips, to be splayed out from the ground, to be coming from her throa—
He stood up abruptly, walking past her. Focus, focus, focus on something else. Anything else. His head throbbed from the struggle.
"We focus on what we need to," he said. "And that is our passengers. And as for me...Stay on guard. I don't know how long the beast can be sated."
His future would be...Something to be decided at a later time.
Ayla grimaced. Okay, so... that hadn't gone as planned. And really, she knew she couldn't understand what he was going through. Her thoughts, despite the tadpole, were still her own, for the most part. No one was making her think of violent murder all day.
"That's not quite what I meant," she said, smiling awkwardly. "Mostly just that, whoever you were in the past, that doesn't matter. And despite your, um, more murderous thoughts, your future is still what you make of it. All of us, we can help."
She really hoped that sounded better. Even if she couldn't understand exactly what he was going through, she wanted him to know he didn't have to go through it alone.

I'm just going to say "plots please" for any muse combos you're interested in
I'll just go down the list, then.
Astrophel would be interesting with Durante and Talilah. With his own past as a warlock, it'd be interesting for the two to compare notes, and bard on bard violence is always fun.
Val or Artemis could be fun with Briza because drow antics, but both Val and Arte have a good deal against Lolth's teachings/drow society in general.
Azriel and Tavinkas would be cool. I love bhaalspawn sibling stuff, but Gwen could also be interesting. Good characters dealing with Durge being...well durge usually is fun.
Ennui and Durante may also work well, given that both have issues due to being tieflings. Not to mention both becoming warlocks due to a really bad experience.
As for relationships, I'm saying nothing due to not knowing how the chemistry would go. Also, sorry if this is a lot.

@thoselittledespairs sent: "I have felt alone all my life, except with you." // to tavinkas from nox <3 from A meme I'm not digging for
Tavinkas knew that feeling. Of being alone. It gnawed at him, even in his shattered memories. The feeling of isolation, of not having any true connections with anyone. Except for something which had carved out his isolation, making him reliant on it and it alone.
"That may not be a safe decision," he confessed. "But...I'm glad to give you that. I feel like it may be one of the few good things I've done."
The desperation to do good, to be something more, of clawing his way out of a hole was engrained in him, no matter how much it wanted to suffocate it.

Little scene rewriting exercise to have both my custom!Tav and Durge!Tav traveling together. Just a quick write up, not polished. Enjoy. (brief info on how my Tavs met; I'll write that up later this week)
The odd group made their way through the wreckage of the nautiloid. A cleric, a bard, and a sorcerer weren’t the typical company to keep. Shadowheart kept to the back while Talilah lead the way, trying to be upbeat despite everything. She was intent on seeing if there were any other survivors, thinking the more numbers was for the better. Tavinkas could see her point, but he did wonder if this trapsing about was all for naught. They were on borrowed time, no matter how much her performed optimism said otherwise.
“Hello? Over here!” A sharp tenor voice called through the wreckage.
As they walked past the fire and smoke, Tavinkas noticed the figure a split second after Talilah had. A white haired man in midnight blue fineries, his back to them. Perhaps a noble who had been snatched out of Baldur’s Gate. There was some familiarity to him, although Tavinkas wasn’t sure what stirred in recognition. But he knew it was better to not be involved with the man.
Talilah, though, seemed to be of an entirely different opinion, cautiously but sure in her steps as she walked towards him. All she could see was the possibility of an ally, albeit at least she wasn’t stupid enough to be completely off guard.
“Hurry, I’ve got one of those brain things cornered,” he said in a hushed tone. Talilah paused in her step, Tavinkas a step behind her and the cleric not far behind as well. Tavinkas and Shadowheart exchanged looks before turning back to the pale stranger. “There. In the grass. You can kill it, can’t you? Like you killed the others.”
“Kill it yourself. You look—” Tavinkas began.
“Easily. Stand back,” Talilah said, stepping forward. Tavinkas took a sharp breath, not keen on seeing the person who rescued him and took care of his wounds fall to be a possible victim, no matter how much that darkness wreathed in him in excitement at the chance of witnessing it.
Talilah looked through the grass, not seeing what the stranger was talking about, only a boar running out of the tall grass. Perhaps the intellect devourer had scared the boar…?
“Talilah!” Tavinkas’s warning came too late. The feeling of being grabbed from behind and pulled down took her by surprise. The glint of a blade to her throat drew her attention and her blue eyes met with red. The slimy bastard had jumped her! She struggled against his hold, scheming how to pay him back as he began to speak.
“Shh, shh, shh. Not a sound,” his voice had dropped to a dangerous whisper. “Not if you want to keep that darling neck of yours.” His head snapped up to her companions, a growl coming from him. “And you! Keep your distance. No need for this to get messy.” The grin on his face as his eyes looked back to Talilah spoke of some enjoyment in this situation.
Tavinkas put his hand in front of Shadowheart, stopping her from stepping forward. A commanding darkness seemed to swirl about him, his green eye and red eye bright with a silent anger as he watched the scene before him. A slow snarl came to his lips, almost as if he were keeping something feral under control.
“You cause one drop of blood to come from her, and I’ll strangle you with your own intestines,” Tavinkas’s deep baritone voice warned, a sharper knife to it than the stranger’s blade.
“My, such a tease,” the pale elf quipped. “Sadly, I do have other business.” Talilah felt his grip tighten on her and she struggled even more against him. “Now, I saw you on the ship, didn’t I? Nod.”
Fire ignited her blue eyes as she glared at his smug face. The way his red eyes seemed to glimmer with a glee at him having some bit of power, the smirk on his face she wanted to wipe off as quick as she could. She did not break eye contact, she did not yield to him, only gritted her teeth and made her move.
“Nod to this, you arse!” She snapped, slamming her forehead against his. The strike threw him off, giving her a chance to stand up. She barely registered the bark of a laugh from Tavinkas as both rose to a stand.
“Argh, you wretched little—!” He began, only as a sensation coursed through both of them. A similar feeling, a connection between the pale elf and herself. The memories weren’t hers. The dark streets, prowling about them. Filled with people, filled with options to consider. Talilah tried to hold onto the memory, tried to see more, but it faded to the worm, showing a light and…fear.
“What was that? What’s going on?” The stranger shook it off, a small tone of panic in his voice.
“It would appear to be the mind flayer’s worm,” Tavinkas stated, folding his arms and glaring at him. “It’s connected all of us.”
“The worm, of course.” Talilah watched his expressions, taking in the slight changes from the growling defensive to the slow surrender of reality mixed with some perplexion. “That explains things. Somewhat.” Talilah tilted her head slightly, noting how the last word was dropped to the point perhaps only she had heard it. As if feeling her gaze on him, his eyes flicked up and the expression she was trying to read was gone. Covered again by a mask with a smile that didn’t seem to reach his eyes. “And to think! I was ready to decorate the ground with your innards. Apologies.”
“You’d better have more to offer than ‘apologies,’” Talilah threw back at him, folding her arms with a slight smirk. If he wanted to play masks, she could as well. But she could wear hers better than he could, she’d bet. Tavinkas and Shadowheart exchanged unimpressed, displeased glances.
“I’m out of wine and flowers so I hope an introduction will suffice,” he tossed back. “My name’s Astarion. I was in Baldur’s Gate when those beasts snatched me.”
“I’m Talilah Bluethorn. This is Tavinkas and Shadowheart,” Talilah told him. “I was in Baldur’s Gate as well.” He didn’t need the details on what she was doing there.
“Is that so?” The tone in his voice caused her to narrow her eyes a bit. “We clearly move in different circles.” Fancypants noble types, always an absolute pain. Apparently, she hadn’t hit him hard enough in the head. “So, do you know anything about these worms?”
“Oh, yes,” Tavinkas’s dry sarcasm dripped from his words. “We’ll have a lovely time being ripped to shreds while turning into mind-flayers.”
“It’ll be grand, I’m sure,” Shadowheart added, just as dry.
“Turn us into—ha.” He exploded into a brief laughing fit and Talilah reconsidered that maybe she had hit him hard enough in the head. But there was a shift in his expression, something dabbling into anger at irony. “Of course, it’ll turn me into a monster.” A slight tinge of defeated sadness followed suit. “What else did I expect.” His expression switched to a desperate panic; he was not masking as well as he may have hoped. At least not to someone as trained at reading people as Talilah. There was more to the story, and she was curious as to what. “Although it hasn’t happened yet. If we can find an expert—someone that can control these things—there might still be time.” His eyes locked with hers, a pleading look in them, as if she and her fellows were his only hope.
“Control it?” Talilah questioned, seeing if that might cause him to expose something more. “We need to get rid of it.”
“Well, yes of course, but first things first.” There was the mask again. A smooth smirk and a raised brow, attempting to make himself as pretty as possible. If it were on anyone else other than a bard, it may have worked. Except maybe Tavinkas. Talilah noted he seemed to prefer to keep everyone at a distance.
“You should travel with us,” Talilah began. Okay, maybe it had worked a little bit, but she wouldn’t tell him that.
“Talilah—” Tavinkas began, only for her to continue, looking slightly over her shoulder at him.
“Our odds are better together.” Tavinkas knew she had a point and gave a little huff, accepting their newest traveling companion. Begrudgingly. The interaction between them only caused Astarion’s smirk to turn smug.
“You know, I was ready to go this alone,” he said, examining the group, “but maybe sticking with the herd isn’t such a bad idea.” He focused his gaze on Talilah, maintaining eye contact with her. “And you seem like a useful person to know.” A brief moment as his smirk grew when she rolled her eyes. “All right, I accept. Lead on.” He gave a sarcastic little bow, keeping eye contact as if enjoying her unimpressed look. Talilah was hoping not to regret this. Meanwhile, Tavinkas and Shadowheart were.

Smash or Pass: Group Fic
Summary: My primaries decide to have a game after the others have gone to sleep. Set towards the beginning of Act 1.
“Smash or pass?” There was an incredulous look on her face as Gwenifar repeated the words the tiefling just spoke. The others had retired from the fire for the evening, settling in to sleep, train, or stalk the night. So, it was the six of them left; Briza, Durante, Frits, Gwenifar, Talilah and Tavinkas. And Durante was always teeming with some sort of idea to idle the time away.
“Yeah, we say if we’d sleep with any of the others or not,” Durante said, having lounged beside the fire, taking up space which had been vacated. His tail flipped idly, seeming to be intrigued by the concept. “Be a good way to break the ice, I think.” He smirked at her, blue eyes glowing from beneath his brow. “What’s wrong, Ilmatari? Scared?” Gwenifar gave a bit of a scoff, rolling her eyes and refusing to answer, ignoring the slight warmth to her cheeks.
“It’s fine; it’s just a silly way to the pass the time,” Talilah chimed in, setting her lute to the side. “Let him get it out of his system now, aye?”
“I don’t think he’ll ever get whatever’s going on out of his system,” Briza said, sarcasm dripping from her tone as she rested back on her elbows.
“C’mon, don’t be dull,” Durante whined, his tail moving slightly faster in mild irritation.
“It could be amusing,” Frits agreed, enthusiastically. “It won’t do any harm, would it?”
“He won’t let it go if we don’t humor him,” Tavinkas sighed. He gave Durante a pointed look, the flames making the shadows dance on his face. “We’ll play your silly game if you behave yourself.”
“Me? Misbehave?” There was a chorus of remarks on that. “Fine, fine, I will…Do my best.”
“Well, Durante, it was your idea,” Gwenifar pointed out. “You go first. Who out of our companions would you smash or pass?”
“Easy, smash all of them,” he said, sitting up. ““Smash for all of them. At least once. Maybe multiple at the same time. Depends on if any of them would be interested in that.”
“Really? All of them?” Talilah asked, a bit of an amused smirk on her face. “No thoughts? Just libido?”
“Of course! And you can join too, no worries,” Durante told her with a wink. “Who’s next?”
“I’ll be as simple as Durante,” Briza said. “I would smash Karlach, Shadowheart, and Lae’zel. Pass on Gale, Wyll, and Astarion. I don’t do men.”
“That’s fair, with what I’ve dealt with with them lately,” Talilah grumbled.
“Oh, so would you go only for the ladies, Talilah?” Durante asked, a sly look on his face. She glared at him for a moment then gave a defeated sigh.
“No, let me think,” she relented. “Hm, I might pass on Gale. He’s a bit too…Teachery for me.”
“You say that like it’s a bad thing,” Tavinkas countered.
“Just because someone’s a bit…Bookish doesn’t mean they would be…Less intellectual in bed,” Gwenifar added.
“I am in agreement,” Frits said, offended by the thought.
“Well, you three can smash him,” Talilah threw back. “Think I’d pass on Shadowheart and Lae’zel. Shadowheart’s a bit too friend-y feeling for me and Lae’zel is…Intense.”
“That’s not a crime!” Durante threw out.
“Wyll’s a smash, for sure,” Talilah continued, ignoring him. “Karlach is a maybe if she could touch. And that leaves…ugh. Astarion.” She said the name with a hint of annoyance. She clearly found something annoying about the rogue, maybe the fact he could pick locks better than her. Everyone stared at her, waiting for her decision. “You know what? Fine. Smash. I want to see if he can back up that attitude of his.” She leaned back, putting her hands behind her. “Because in my experience…They usually can’t.” That earned a bit of a chuckle from Durante, Gwenifar, and Frits, a slight amused smirk from Briza, and a snort from Tavinkas. “What about you, Vin?”
“If you insist,” he sighed and then without a beat “Smash: Gale, Wyll, Shadowheart. Pass: Lae’zel, Karlach, Astarion.”
“Any desire to expand on your choices?” Frits asked.
“No.”
“Well. Then, I suppose I shall take my turn,” Frits began. “Let’s see. Smash Karlach—”
“She would crush you!” Talilah interrupted.
“Not a bad thing, now don’t interrupt,” Frits chided her. “Smash Karlach, possibly Gale, I wouldn’t be opposed to either Shadowheart or Lae’zel. I do believe I would pass on Astarion and Wyll, though. They remind me of two of my siblings in some aspects of personality.”
“Quite understandable,” Gwenifar said, having been quiet most of this time. But that comment drew eyes to her. She looked between the five others, knowing she couldn’t hold off on it anymore. She could feel the heat growing in her cheeks.
“Well?” Durante asked, looking very much like a cat who got the canary.
“I, well you see,” she managed out, trying to consider the options “it’s hard to say at this point! I just haven’t—”
“Oh, gods, don’t tell me you’re one of those ‘I need a connection’ types,” Durante groaned, rolling onto his back. Briza stared at him and shifted her feet in a way to kick up dust onto his face. He sat up, sputtering.
“I need a connection and you can shove your attitude up your arse,” Gwenifar snapped at him.
“You already basically admitted to Gale,” Talilah said, trying to defuse the situation. “It’s just a bit of sillies.”
“Quite right!” Frits said. “Think of it this way; who could you see that connection possibly happening with?”
“Very well then,” Gwenifar said, releasing a huff of a breath. “I suppose possibly with Shadowheart and Lae’zel, perhaps Wyll as well. I don’t think Lae’zel and I would see…Eye to eye on those matters. Astarion as well, for that matter.”
“See? Not that hard,” Durante said. “Now we just need to get you with one and—” He was silenced by a bedroll smacking him in the face.
“Tavinkas said to behave,” Briza said, holding the end of the bedroll. “You’ve had your fun; now go to bed, Durante.”
Durante took the bedroll, glaring at Briza. “Spoiled sport,” he muttered but did as he was told, everyone else following suit.

He wasn't entirely sure why, if it were merely the other's flippant attitude, flirtatious manner or something else about him that just...Set him off a bit. But every time he was around him, he just would get agitated. And that made things harder for him to control, to stop it from gnawing at him. He hated it, he hated every second of it.
"In your dreams," his voice was gruff and dry.
Green and red watched Astarion as he played his little argument out. A slight little smirk came to his face at the mention of picking up strays.
"Starting to regret picking up one stray." It was a pointed statement and perhaps, a slightly low blow. But he couldn't resist, as he had left himself open for it.
Tavinkas leaned back, resting his arm on the log behind him, watching Astarion over the firelight. He tilted his head to the side, acting to consider what he was suggesting.
"We could also just kill them and get information that way," he said. "Speak with the dead while we're disguised. Straight forward and to the point." He tucked his head slightly to look at Astarion from beneath his brow. "You do like killing things, do you not?"
His eyes flicker to the trembling hand. The smirk he wore faltered, a growing concern for his own hide. If there was one thing that still hadn't been made clear it was if this man knew which direction to divert his violent appetite. Power was only useful if one knew how to wield it. That was a growing doubt.
"Never say never, darling. I may grow on you yet and I'm not objected to a little foot play."
Maybe a second ago a wink would've been delivered, but his mind is elsewhere than being a prick just to ruffle some feathers. There are things to consider before he decides what cards to play. Ideally he'd want the most powerful person in this growing camp in his favor - but that person he's determined would be the best in his corner .. is also slightly on the unhinged side. No judgement is being tossed about it. He just doesn't want it to end up biting him.
"You are quite the contradiction, my blood-thirsty friend. Allow me to play Devil's Advocate for a moment though. We need to learn more about this cult. What better way than up close and personal? They think we're one of them. That is a valuable tool. We play ball with them to earn their trust and boom-!" He snaps his fingers then spreads them open in a splash. "We're at the center of information and with that we learn how to control these tadpoles wiggling around in our heads. We don't stand a hells chance getting close and finding out what any of this is all about if we make enemies out of them. We have our own problems. Do you really intend to stop and pick up every stray we come across?"

so, since my brain says all my Tavs and my Durge exist together, I guess I'll give a break down of what that means if anyone wants to get involved in that chaos. And how they get along with each other.
Talilah
Talilah is the designated leader because she's just like "Fuck this let's get this done." She's decently smart and clever, able to come up with plans, but has some mild impulse issues and very much a "I wonder what that does." Very fearless and willing to step up when need be.
The others
Briza - there are tensions at first due to Talilah's sun elf genes being very strong and sun elves tend not to ask questions first when meeting drow. But they eventually get along, especially because Talilah catches onto her dry humor quickly and they play off of each other with that.
Durante - absolute chaos enabler duo. They enjoy being a bit jesty with each other and maybe pick on the other members of the party together as a team. They have running bet pools on the most random of things and you'll see them toss a coin between each other, depending on who won the bet. At the most random moments.
Frits - She likes to play pranks on him. Not anything mean, just a few things here or there because he's got a good nature about it. What she doesn't realize at first is he's very intent on returning the favor, and does take her by surprise when he does. Sometimes she finds his habit of going on about something tiring but she'll humor him and he appreciates it.
Gwenifar - Gwenifar plays a bit of a right hand for Talilah, as she's probably the most qualified for being leader, but Talilah jumped at it first. She helps to control Talilah's impulses and keep her on track when she needs to be reminded of what needs to be done.
Tavinkas - Talilah rescued Tavinkas from a pod on the ship. This has caused her to have his undying loyalty because, well, first person to be helpful to him in a while, all things considered. He's definitely protective of her and Talilah's intent on pushing him out of his comfort zones and helping him find himself.
Gwenifar
Takes on the roll of leader if Talilah is unable to. She's basically second-in-command and able to keep everyone on track with what needs to be done besides Durante. She tries to keep peace in the party but isn't afraid of putting her foot down and showing a rather terrifying sternness.
Briza - The two get along decently, with Briza maybe even having found Gwenifar attractive in some instances, but nothing more. They both enjoy animals and spend time discussing the best care for Scratch and the Owlbear.
Durante - Durante's favorite hobby is getting under Gwenifar's skin. He has no issues taking cheap shots at her and ruffling her feathers, to which she finds him irksome and childish. The pair often clash due to Durante's attitude and he's lucky she's a cleric of Ilmater some days.
Frits - The pair are both academically minded and with Frits's family having been florist, also have a shared interest in herbology. The two will spend time talking about plants and different theories, and are good friends.
Tavinkas - There is something about Tavinkas that makes her uneasy and Tavinkas realizes this. When it comes to light, it makes sense, and Gwenifar does what she can to help him and he appreciates it. It takes a bit but they do eventually become friends.
Tavinkas
I would list him as third in pecking order of my muses of who's the leader (I would rank Wyll or Gale above him in the overall pecking order though). He has the skills and the capability, it's just he has so much on his plate with his amnesia and urges, he prefers someone with a constant level head to handle things while he works himself out.
Briza - they bond over being the ones less involved in the group and observing, as well as a similar morbid humor. They're often seen standing by each other and making dry remarks about the others in the party.
Durante - Tavinkas is probably one of the few that can actually get Durante to listen and behave. A stern word and a dark look from him is enough for the tiefling warlock to rethink what he's doing. It could due to a slight attraction on Durante's part, though.
Frits - Tavinkas finds Frits to be utterly fascinating. He doesn't quite understand how someone can be so bright and optimistic about...Almost everything. In turn, Frits is quite interested in Tavinkas's ailments and often has some idea to try to work out what it is, often coming up to Tavinkas and suggesting options.
Frits
A reliable intellect, who's gracious and willing to discuss what may need to be done and help plan out things which may require a higher level of learning. While not the strongest, he does try his best to be of as much assistance to the party as he can.
Briza - He finds Briza to be a bit intimidating, to be honest. But he doesn't let that stop him from attempting to befriend her. He can't tell if it's worked or not, due to her attitude. (It's worked. If anything happened to Frits, Briza would kill everyone in this room and then herself).
Durante - Despite Frits's attempts, Durante seems to lack any interest in having more than a working relationship with him. He says he finds most of Frits's topics of discussion to be a bit dull for him. Save for when Frits mentions a past flame of his, which Durante finds hard to believe to be true.
Briza
Briza prefers to act as a scout for the party, taking orders as needed and finding out information for the path forward. She's not one for pointless socialization and prefers to consider what needs to be done next.
Durante - She finds him insufferable and takes any chance she can to remind him of that. In turn, Durante tries to push her buttons when he sees a chance but does avoid her otherwise. It takes some time for any chance of warm feelings to even start to glimmer between them.
Durante
This man has no desire to have any responsibility and just wants the tadpole out of his head. He pulls his weight as need be, but prefers to be in the backseat and let the others deal with decisions and other issues. It may come from past trauma and how he feels about his contract, though.

@infernaliscor liked for a starter from Tavinkas
"You're quite...Unique, you know." He hadn't made a sound when had moved to lean against the tree behind her. He had made note of the new member of their little group. Death hung thick around her, he could practically taste the horrors she may have witness or had a hand in. He would not dwell on why he would, though.
"You strive for life, for something more than what you were made to be." A bit blunt but it was true. She was meant to be a killing machine, but here she was, taking her little pleasures and making them large ones. But there was still blood dripping from her hands that may never wash off.
"It's almost admirable, in a way. Most people would be broken by what you went through."

If he were a bad guy...
The thought distracted him for a moment or so, as if a distant memory was knocking from a locked door. A flash, perhaps, but it faded as he continued to listen to the music.
Their question pulled him out of the moment and he cleared his throat.
"I...I heard the music," he stated. "I think I've always been fond of music." Maybe, he wasn't sure. It was something that soothed him, though.
He gave a bit of a hum at their invitation. He moved to sit with his back against a tree, mismatched eyes watching as she played.
"I don't dance so sitting will have to suffice." Don't was a strong choice. Perhaps he just didn't remember how.
" I never intended to stop." Canta opens their eyes before blinking. " If ya were a bad guy, I guess I'd be in big trouble hm?" They continued to pluck the strings perfectly, tilting their head all the way to the side, Canta spoke. " Did ye need somethin' or did ya really just come to hear me play?" Their eyes glimmered with the hope that their services would be in need. It always made them perk up when someone personally came to them first.
"Well, don't just stand there, sit or dance. There are no other options over here." They spoke to him like it was an obvious social cue he missed, shaking their head. " Those are the rules, I make them and follow them." Canta's nose shot up in the air with "hmph!". Of course Canta wasn't serious, but they did like teasing and playing with others just a bit.

This is just a random headcanon, but I feel like Tavinkas cannot sit properly in a chair. I feel like he is a big lounger. If everyone's sitting on the ground or floor, he's going to lounge, stretch out his legs, all that.
He is physically incapable of sitting like a regular person for some reason. He just likes to lounge. Prop his leg over the arm of the chair, throw an arm over the back of it, sit on it sideways, whatever.
He just won't sit in a gd chair properly or sit like a regular person. Lounger extreme.
