fight or flight - rafe cameron
summary: you come back to the outer banks with an engagement ring and a wedding date, and rafe cameron crumbles.
a/n: so i said i was going to write something fluffy to get out of the writing rut and instead i wrote this. so
wc: 2.3k
warning(s): angst, unrequited love, no happy ending. i wrote unrequited love on reader’s side so it’s only fair that rafe goes through it too
based off the song by conan gray because apparently he's my main inspo for toxic rafe
Tumblr media
Rafe Cameron didn’t exactly know what he was doing here.
It was the night of your wedding party, or a welcome back party, or some other fucking name for the party. Whatever it was, it was to commemorate you getting married to a guy that most certainly was not him. Clearly, seeing as you were doing your rounds with your soon-to-be-husband and he was downing his fifth glass of champagne. It wasn't doing anything, but he didn't really care.
This wasn’t how the night was supposed to go. Hell, this wasn’t how his week was supposed to go.
Rumors had started floating through kook circles that you were coming back to the Outer Banks for the spring, and the second the grapevine reached him, he knew he had to talk to you.
Rafe never really got to say everything he wanted to say to you before you left for college in Seattle, putting a mere 2,813 miles between the two of you. University of Washington got you and Rafe lost you, all while he stayed put in North Carolina, pushing his way through Chapel Hill with his father in his ear and a business degree Rafe didn’t even think he wanted.
So when he heard that you were going to be back in his neck of the woods for a week, he started thinking of all the things he had to say to you, things that he’d been too much of a coward to say when he still had you.
He couldn’t tell you how he felt about you—that was coming on too strong. Especially when he considered the fact that he’d had a thing for you since freshman year, ever since you were paired up together as lab partners in Mrs. Hawthorne’s biology class. Rafe credited that year as the first time he got A’s on every project while not remembering a single thing that was said. You had that sort of effect on him.
But he had to at least say something—how much he’d missed you, how he wished he didn’t leave things the way he did, how he’d thought about you basically every single day since you’d packed yourself into a car with your family for a cross-country trip you wouldn’t be coming back from.
Maybe. Maybe not.
He didn’t know. Rafe had never known when it came to you.
But then Sarah came inside a day later, carrying a load of mail. And within it, a Save the Date addressed to the Cameron family.
A Save the Date for your wedding.
It wasn’t much of a surprise to his sisters when he stormed out right after reading it and spent the rest of the day off the radar—there was a reason Sarah tried to keep it away from him.
The whole situation was almost laughable, how Rafe went from thinking about ways he could bridge the gap from the past few years to drinking away a sorrow he should have been able to leave in high school.
So Rafe was still in love with you, and you were getting married to some Seattle guy he’d never even met, and he was at your wedding party but he wasn’t part of your wedding party, and he was about two more drinks away from a full on breakdown.
Yeah. He was doing pretty great.
“Rafe!”
…Great.
He steeled himself as he turned around, and the vice relieved the slightest bit of pressure on his heart to see you by yourself. Rafe didn’t really think he could handle talking to your fiancé.
“Hey,” he said, a smile born solely of kook instincts forming.
“I haven’t seen you in forever,” you laughed. You brushed a strand of hair out of your face, the engagement ring glaring at him even from afar. “Thank you so much for coming!”
“Sure,” Rafe said. “You invited the whole family. Would’ve been rude not to.”
Your smile wavered but remained strong, the only sign of uncertainty the slightest crease between your eyebrows. Turns out kook DNA stayed just as strong thousands of miles away. “I guess, but I didn’t want it to be an obligation. I thought you would be just as happy to see me.”
“I am,” Rafe lied, and his throat bobbed. “It’s just… been a long night.”
“Oh,” you said, and you nodded, “I get that.”
Uncomfortable silence permeated the air between you before you, ever the diplomat, smiled even brighter and broke it. “So what have you been up to lately? Changing the world and all that?”
“Something like that,” Rafe said. His gaze moved behind you, and he saw your fiance talking with some parents a couple tables down. That potential conversation wasn’t something he could even think about handling.
You opened your mouth to say something, Rafe interrupted before you could. “Uh, Sarah’s calling me from over there. I gotta go.”
He didn’t look back as he walked off, and he was glad he did. Seeing the hurt on your face that he caused would have broken him.
-
Tonight had been… a lot.
It was one thing coming back to the Outer Banks after being on the West Coast for so long, back to the norms you’d steadily been growing away from. Seeing your friends was great, but you really didn’t miss the constant comments from their parents. You wouldn’t have even invited them if you had the choice, but your mom was planning a majority of your wedding, and her guest list was “nonnegotiable”.
So while you had the best time talking to friends you hadn’t seen in months and introducing them to your fiance during your rounds, you could have done without all the bubble wrap.
You loved the Banks, but Seattle had spoiled you with how… normal it was. There was a reason you were only getting married here, and there was reason you kept basically all of your romantic life a secret since you went to college—after all this, it was right back to the road.
With your cheeks aching from smiling so much and your social battery steadily running out, you entrusted your fiancé with pleasantries for a bit so you could get some fresh air.
If there was one thing you were thankful for with your hometown, it was the nostalgia. You’d run around and fished at this pier so many times when you were younger it only seemed right to hold your “welcome home, you’re about to get married” party in the same place.
As you stepped outside, you noticed someone else seeking the solace of silence. You would’ve given it to them, but then you recognized the suit and the hair and the way he leaned hunched over against the railing, and you couldn’t just leave it alone.
“Y’know, that’s not good for your posture,” you said, walking up to him with a slight smile.
Rafe turned his head, and when you registered in his mind, he sighed. “As you’ve told me for years.”
“And yet you never listen to me.” You leaned against the railing so you were facing him, and Rafe didn’t move. “What brings you out here?”
“Could ask you the same thing,” he said, still not looking at you.
You shrugged. “Just needed some space from it all.”
“Why?” Rafe finally looked at you, his expression almost vacant. “Having doubts?”
You frowned. “Of course not. It’s just overwhelming being back. Everyone has something to say about every part of this, and I don’t really care about anyone’s opinion but Jake’s.”
Rafe huffed a laugh, looking away again. “Jake. Of course that’s his name.”
Your brow furrowed deeper and you stood up. “Okay, what the hell is up with you tonight, Rafe?”
“Nothing,” he said, still staring off into the water.
“That’s bullshit,” you bit out. “You’ve been weird all night, and it's like you're trying to avoid me. Do you have a problem with me now or something?”
He finally pushed himself up and looked at you, all messed up hair and unbuttoned jacket and glimmering eyes, and you had to force yourself not to look away. “The opposite, actually. But I do have a problem with you inviting me to this whole thing and acting like it’s normal.”
“The opposite?” You stared at him in disbelief. “What the hell are you talking about? We’ve been friends forever, why wouldn’t I invite you?”
“Because I am in love with you!” Rafe exclaimed, and your eyes widened as he laughed. “God, I don’t know how you never realized—I’ve been practically tripping over you since freshman year, and then you go and do this shit!"
“You—” you laughed too, if only out of pure shock, shaking your head as you took a step back, “—you what?”
“I’m in love with you,” he repeated blatantly. The words didn't bring him relief—how could they, when they couldn’t do anything for him? “Surprise, I guess.”
“You can’t fucking do this to me,” you said shakily. “Not today. Not— not now. Tell me you’re joking.”
“Do I look like I’m joking?” Rafe ran his hand through his hair with a cold laugh, turning away from you. “I don’t even know why I came tonight. Guess I just had to see for myself if it was true.”
“Of course it’s true!” you exclaimed. “Why would you come to this if you just— if you just wanted to try and ruin this for me?”
“You think I want to ruin this for you?” Rafe shook his head and huffed another laugh. “You think I want this? To have been in love with the one person I’ve never been able to have?”
“Why didn’t you tell me in high school?” you demanded. Your voice wavered from anger over anything, a fire beginning to burn in your chest. “Why didn’t you tell me during any of the summers I was back? Why— God, Rafe, why now?”
“You think we ever would’ve worked out then?” he asked with another mirthless laugh. “I— I was a complete wreck in basically every way, and you were the most perfect person I’d ever met. It was a miracle we ever became friends, and even more of one that you stuck with me. I thought I would get over it, because I knew nothing could ever happen, but every year I just fell harder. For me, it's you. It has always been you, even with everyone else.”
“No.” You shook your head, the blaze growing inside of you. “No, no— it has not been me!”
Rafe shrugged. “I don’t know what to tell you.”
“You don’t get to tell me this!” you seethed, and you moved towards him. “You don’t get to try and uproot my life just to make yourself feel better, you asshole!”
“I never had the chance to tell you!” Rafe defended, and he counted off his fingers as he listed names. “Freshman year it was Tatum, and then it was Mason, then Jade, then fucking Kelce—” he threw up his hands. “Everytime you were single, you were very clearly not interested, clearly, if you were dating one of my best friends. And then it was senior year, and you told us all you were going to Seattle. What the hell was I supposed to do?”
“You should have told me how you felt before all of this!” The wind had begun to pick up now, the night chill biting at your skin, but you didn’t care. “Because you know what, Rafe? I liked you too!”
That stopped him in his tracks. “What?”
“Yeah,” you said, and you managed a shaky laugh. “Junior year, I liked you for a while. Kelce said a lot of good things about you when we were together, and it actually started to change how I saw you. Less of an asshole, more of an actual human. Just someone who was working through stuff in the worst way. Why do you think Kelce and I spent so much time together after we broke up?”
Rafe laughed, but it could barely be considered one, wholly without heart. “You’re fucking kidding me.”
You shook your head. “I thought it could have been something. But before I could say anything, you got with Tessa and I figured it wasn’t worth a shot.”
Rafe went silent as he turned away again, but you could see the clench of his jaw even from your position.
“This doesn’t mean anything,” you said, “okay? I don’t care how you feel about me, because I don’t feel anything for you. I am getting married next month, and that’s that.”
“I know.” He turned around, his signet ring glinting in the pier’s lamplights. “It’s not like I expected to change anything. I just…” he sighed. “I don’t think I could have physically kept it in any longer.”
“You should have,” you murmured. A spring night shouldn’t have been this cold, but you wrapped your arms around yourself as the chill bit at you. Maybe it wasn’t all external.
“Congratulations on your wedding,” Rafe said. “I’m happy for you. Really. I just can’t be part of it.”
“Really?” You huffed a mirthless laugh, looking him right in the eye. “This is it? After all the years we’ve been friends, you’re not even going to come to my wedding?”
“I can’t.” His tongue darted out to wet his lips and he turned away, shaking his head before meeting your eyes once more. “I should go. Have a good night. I—“ his throat bobbed, “—I’m sorry.”
Your sundress blew in the breeze, your cardigan doing nothing to help with the chill creeping through you. This wasn’t the way any of this was supposed to go, but it wasn’t like you had a choice.
You pushed back the tears threatening to fall and let out a shaky breath, moving back towards the doors.
You looked over your shoulder and watched Rafe Cameron walk out of your life for the last time, and then you went back inside.

Ramble about the Unnamed Rulie Fake Marriage Fic!
Heya! Thanks for the ask!! I ramble about this so much with Ash and my wife already but I am very willing to ramble some more!
For the sake of those who might not want to know about specifics or potential spoilers for this story I will ramble below the cut XD
I will warn you....the longer I rambled...the more grammar disappeared and the paragraphs grew
So! My Unnamd Rulie Fake marriage fic spurred from me wanting to make a fuller story for this prompt fill I did a little bit ago. It takes place over the course of a year and I have put so much into trying to plan this thing out. ike I don't think I've put this much forethought into a fic.
I made a couple rough timelines....one of which encompasses the years lading up to the fic.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You may have noticed mentions of surgery and that leads us to the whole entire premise of the fake marriage. Reggie had an undiscovered heart condition that flared up with the stress of touring.
He had his Meemaw as his emergency contact but then she passed away around the same time his condition was discovered. His dad had started to try and make ammends and improve their relationship. In this universe while his Dad is toxic his mom is actually the more toxic one, so when she returns to his dad, they start toxic feedback looping.
Anyway Reggie learns that heart surgery is probably an inevitability and the sooner he gets it the better chance he would have at a long life. Except he doesn't want to go into heart surgery with his parents, once more returning to the toxic bad parents of his childhood, as his emergency contacts. And the hospital is being, a pain, telling him unless he gets married familial relations are the standard contact.
So because of other fanfic contrived reasons, Reggie reaches out to Julie to ask her....and they get into a bit of a small spat over it. Because in this universe they've really only known each other like an accumulated 7ish months.
Anyway, the whole marriage, is just a convoluted way to get someone other than his parents as an emergency contact and some additional help during recovery for this whole surgery.
There are so many more details and shenanigan's.
Like Julie is adamant they can not tell anyone it's a fake marriage because their friends are awful at keeping secrets/lying and Victoria would kill her either way but "secretly dating and eloping would be easier for her to accept" or at least that's what Julie believes.
Then (I haven't written it yet, but) they go and elope in Vegas but before they can tell their friends and family, a fan who spotted them outside the chapel circulates a photo. And this happens like 2 months after they tried to convince them all that they weren't romantically interested in each other like that after they ran into each other and hung out for a small bit on valentines day,
SO of course they're confronted by everyone going "I fucking knew it" and "what the hell?!"
And Ray is hurt(even more so when he learns Reggie lives in Seattle and Julie is moving there basically as soon as she's packed) but settles on forgiving them if they let him take as many pictures as he wants and they spend their first Christmas with him (which just cements the tentative timeline they had for their marriage's expiration)
Then Julie gets all frustrated and depressed during her first month living with Reggie because it's the furthest she's lived from her family and sh doesn't really have any friends nearby. And she wants to work but is waaaay overthinking the whole temporary nature of the living arrangement. Which leads to a small bout of drama with her and Reggie.
Once they talk that out, they both slowly start falling for each other....it's REALLY obvious how much Reggie has fallen for her during post surgery drug addled rants BUT because they are drug-addled Julie writes it off as nonsense that means nothing.
Reggie technically does realize on his own that he's falling for Julie before she's realizes she's falling for him. But he doesn't really do much to change his behavior from Julie's perspective.
Again there is so much and I could ramble all day on this currently I'm at about here with the word count and I wanted to try and release it starting valentines day but I don't think that's going to happen XD

Mrs. Carolyn Allen Garris, 78, passed away at her home Monday, January 10, 2022. The funeral service will be conducted Sunday at 3:30 PM in the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel, officiated by her pastor, Rev. Jeff Manning. Burial will follow in Pinewood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Sunday from 1:30 until 3:15 PM at the funeral home.
Carolyn, a native and lifelong resident of Pitt County, was a daughter of the late Dewey Wallace and Alma Worthington Allen. After her high school graduation, she attended Bob Jones University completing a Bachelor of Science degree in education in 1966. She returned to eastern North Carolina to live and began teaching at [the infamous] Goldsboro Christian Academy. Through the years she also taught at Greenville Christian Academy, Eastern Elementary, W. H. Robinson and Falkland Elementary Schools. In 1978 she completed a Masters in Library Science at East Carolina University and later joined the staff at D.H. Conley High School as a librarian, working at Conley for 14 years prior to her retirement in 1996.
Carolyn loved doing for others. She would always put others before herself. She was a great teacher and enjoyed working with young people and seeing them learn and grow. Her most rewarding teaching experience was seeing first graders grasp a concept and seeing the expression of success on their faces. Carolyn was a longtime member of Maranatha Free Will Baptist Church and was currently a member of Unity FWB Church. Through her many years of church work she had worked with youth and adult choirs, directed plays, served as pianist, as well as teaching Sunday School and was a great partner with her husband, who taught a young couples class. Carolyn enjoyed traveling with her husband and friends. She and her husband traveled to all fifty states. She especially enjoyed her trips to New England and Alaska with some dear friends. She was a great cook and enjoyed having friends and family over for meals.
In addition to her parents, Carolyn was preceded in death by a sister, Charlene A. Haddock and a brother, Kenneth Allen. She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Jimmy Garris; step-daughter, Drs. Janie Garris Hallstrand and husband Teal of Seattle, WA; step-son, Joel Jimmy Garris and wife Stephanie of Orlando, FL; and grandchildren, Nelson, Ethan, and Connor Garris and Erik and Andrew Hallstrand. The family would like to thank Vidant Hospice Care for the love and attention they gave Carolyn and the great support they were to her family. A very special thanks for Betty Hartley, who was her caregiver and friend for the past seven years. Betty was always there for her and was quick to do whatever was needed. She is loved by Carolyn and her family and became a part of her family. The appreciation will never be forgotten!
Memorials may be made to Unity FWB Church Building Fund, 4301 Charles Blvd., Greenville, NC 27858. Online condolences at www.WilkersonFuneralHome.com

Steven Holl’s St Ignatius Chapel at Seattle University.
For a year, in 1960-61, I studied architecture at IIT, the transposed Bauhaus of Weimar Germany. Just a few years before I had arrived Mies van der Rohe had run the school, and it was in effect a monastery of modernist values, with Mies standing at the fore, like St Ignatius before the Jesuits.  Mies was a virtual religion, and his austere bare-bones internationalist style was the catechism, and student were inculcated in his values and style, and cranked out veritable clones of his architecture of the “International Style” which the corporate world had quickly found its own, and blighted cities around the globe with its severe boxes with ineptly done gridded curtain walls.  This straight-jacket naturally gave birth far later to the Baroque flamboyance of, say, Frank Gehry.
Tumblr media
I spent a year in school in this building, Crown Hall, on the Chicago IIT campus.  It was elegant, with terrazzo floors, glass top to bottom, and open space broken only with low partitions and a central utility shaft.  I could wander the entire school, seeing the models made by later classes and the graduate students: clones of Mies every one.  In less than a year I determined that architecture was a business and that I was not going to fit into it; nor did I wish to become a Mies stamp.
[I note that while Crown Hall is elegant, during the winters it was impossible to stand within 10 feet of the uninsulated glass walls, in the summer it was a natural over (at the time lacking air conditioning); the sun would glare off the terrazzo floors, and, well, Mies’ aesthetic classicism had little to do with living human matters – he did not himself chose to live in one of his glass box Chicago high-rises, but instead in a fusty brownstone abode.]
One of Mies’ dictums, paralleling that of other religions, was that “god is in the details.” While I dismissed the strictures of Miesienism almost immediately, attracted more to the flourishes of the heretic Corbusier, I did learn much at the Miesien altar. And one was surely, just where god resided.
The chapel at IIT, in which all things are reduced to open space boxes
In 1961, during a summer in Europe, I made a hitch-hiking visit to Corbusier’s Chapel in Ronchamp.  I’d seen pictures and was drawn moth-to-flame to it.  Arriving I was immediately disappointed in that it was surrounded by a scrim of tourist trap peddlers, religious and architectural, something none of the photos seem ever to show.  Even so the building itself was a marvel, an architectural sculpture sitting on a large hill-top meadow, pristine and quiet.
It was, like Mies’ work, fully modernist, but infused with emotion, respectful of, if not believing in, the religious impulse which it was asked to express.
Since then my eyes have cast a harsh eye on other architects, almost pathologically honing in on them-damned-details. Today, Oct 4 22019, I sit in Steven Holls’ much lauded little St Ignatius chapel here at the University of Seattle, a structure cited for its allegedly glowing color schemata, with veils of color-coordinated light gracing the walls, to presumably spiritual effect. To be utterly cynical I think I have seen big store hype machines deploy these things better, and certainly Holls’ deployment of color pales next to James Turrell, this place being at very best a very pallid matter.
Tumblr media
James Turrell pieces
Structurally this chapel apes Romanic architecture with arching vaults overhead, and baffles blocking direct light in favor of reflected light, done in flat hues of blue and pink and soft oranges and green. Alleged to harmonize instead they simply fall flat, like super-lame modernist would-be stained-glass windows, the old originals of which surely these dollops of color were meant to echo. In keeping with the architectural failure here, likewise are the pieces of “religious art” similarly deadening. And why not: the makers simply don’t really believe this stuff – not Holls, not the sculptor or painter. At best they attempt to ape and genuflect to long dead beliefs, this arch, this wanna-dazzle touch of light; this wants-to-be solemn space which if anything celebrates the spiritual vacuum of the times.
Tumblr media
Living in Europe quite a fair time, I became a self-described church-junkie – because, like Willy Sutton said regarding money, that is where the art (mostly) was. I do not and never did for a second share the beliefs which animated the raising of the innumerable cathedrals, churches, bishop’s palaces, convents and monasteries, and such, that I visited.  But while finding the background beliefs dubious at best, and abhorrent in actual human behaviors they produced, I had to admit that whoever made these things really believed what they were meant to convey. One can see it in the most sophisticated of sculpture and architectural structure and adornment, or in the most primitive. The finger prints of belief, however misguided, are unmistakable, tucked into Mies’ “details.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Whereas here, they are utterly absent, and instead a belief in doing as little as necessary to produce the effect, so we get ridiculous scraped stucco wall coverings, kitschy lights hanging overhead, piss-poor door frames and all the other signs of don’t-really-give-a-fuck’ism under the guise of a smattering of religious seriousness.  After all, the Holls’ firm knew well what climate Seattle has and yet….. The religion here is bottom-line capitalism and it was willing to invest just enough to give the illusion of caring about this spiritual crap.   Well, not really quite enough.
For his secular religiousity, Turrell tends towards pomposity, as if to ape the grandeur of a great cathedral, while not bowing to its symbols; Holls bows unconvincingly and fails to catch himself before landing on his face.  Not that this seems to have disturbed the handful of architectural tourists who passed through, one a cluster of Asian folks accompanied by a serious looking, gesticulating professor.  Though it seemed these people were less than overwhelmed as they wandered in, glanced around and departed in a matter of minutes, their opinion expressed by their feet. However, the perfunctory modernism of Holls’ chapel does fit in perfectly with the mundane urban landscape around it at the University of Seattle – unremarkable, ugly, utilitarian, a training ground for students to learn to not care about anything.

Come August, hundreds of universities across the United States are poised to reopen their campuses with a mix of online and in-person courses. Only a handful are aiming for an entirely online semester. But as the machinery of higher education cranks back into action, faculty, staff, and students are voicing concerns that, with COVID-19 cases surging in many parts of the country, employees are being forced to put their health—and the health of others—at unnecessary risk.

BIOGRAPHY (trigger warnings: infidelity)
It is the strong that survive in this world. You have to take what you want; never wait for it to be given.
These are the words her mother tells her, the phrases that are whispered in her ear and echo as she grows from infancy to adulthood. They are not the honeyed words of a fairytale, nothing so soft as a reminder to ‘Have courage, and be kind.’ as others might prefer nowadays. Instead, she hears the words come from a woman that is a legacy, one that has manufactured herself as someone undeniable, someone who has long-seen the world as filled with only adversaries and has seen every challenge as one for survival. Perhaps it was paranoia, aching in her bones that she passed down to her daughter. Maybe it is the hunger that she remembers, her stomach never full enough and never comfortable enough to rest— a haunting that lingers turned malevolent spirit that’s attached itself to her daughter, too. For a little girl, devoted to her parents and spoiled, however, she understands this lesson as love.
Call it poison. Call it a knife. Today, Helene calls it her strength.
Disenchanted— her father’s favourite word. Ambition— her mother’s favourite word. Hugo D’Autremont had wanted a pretty wife to complete the image of well-rounded glory. Renee Hawthorne had wanted power, wanted influence outside of the stifling life of a small town. How cruel it is to know that theirs is not a marriage of love; partnership, mutual respect, power, yes— but, love was not at the forefront of their union. What they did share, however, was the love and aspirations for their three children.
Of the three of them, she is their middle child. Born Helene Louise D’Autremont, her beginnings are as eventfully uneventful as any would assume. Renee gives birth to her in France, having spent the last of her pregnancy in the D’Autremont’s familial home, and it is there that Helene spends her earliest years: she is christened in the same chapel her father had been christened in (by the same priest, too), her first steps are taken as she attempts to chase after her elder sibling in the chateau’s garden, and papa is her first word— shrieked at the sight of her father coming home from work when her mother moves them into the city. It is blissful, idyllic, even picturesque to imagine: an infancy filled with frothy lace and flowers and sunlight. It is perfect, an image from a magazine. But, so is any outsider’s view of their lives.
Behind closed doors, Hugo and Renee near-constantly argue about the best way to raise their children, and so begins an upbringing that creates in her a desire to take everything that she can while she can, little claws trying to sink into something permanent— and, oh, she’d learn that of all things, success, though while not permanent, was something to always claw after in every aspect of her life.
Her education begins in France before she and her siblings are moved stateside for New York. Then eventually, Renee brings her children to the place she was raised to humble them and show them the stark difference of their lives versus her beginnings. Seattle is next, another private preparatory school like New York, then they return to the east coast for a few years. It is erratic, a hindrance on their educational records, but between nannies and tutors and the children seeming to thrive in whatever environment they are placed in, there is nothing found inherently wrong about their education. In fact, Helene herself seems to do best with change, seems content to keep a rather small circle of friends. The only time she seems to show any distaste is when she spends two consecutive years at Crescent Harbor’s Preparatory School. Being pitted against her cousin Allison irks her, but drives her competitiveness to the point of leaving. She finishes her upper secondary schooling at Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire with a proud tilt of her head. Her mother had come from a small town and worked her way up, yes. That was very well understood. But, to limit Helene’s success by attempting to keep her in Crescent Harbor for her education was a potential misdeed that the girl would not stand for. It is Hugo that in the end understands the tenacity in his middle daughter’s gaze, and who was he to deny a proper education that he could more than afford?
Between her years in Crescent Harbor Prep and Phillips Exeter Academy, her drive in all things academia is met with the approval of classmates and faculty alike, doubly met by her parents’ standards and gloating. Debate, model UN, student government— she appears to be a shoe-in to go into law or politics: a charming face and silver tongue backed by an analytical mind. She always wants more and no one could imagine Helene faltering in any step that she would take. In what free time she has left she competes in dressage competitions, horseback riding a hobby encouraged by her mother when she was younger, but as she had grown so had her desire for competition and order. The piano is a fine instrument, yet she finds the violin more challenging and more commanding; thus, it is her favourite to play. However, her choice in major after she graduates from Exeter as one of the top of her class takes her peers by surprise.
In truth, she had been pushed towards law, had applied to Harvard to compete with her cousin from the western coast. But, she applies under the early decision clause to her school of choice. When she is accepted to Columbia University she tells no one that she is now legally bound to the education institution and instead feigns dismay at having to report she’s been rejected from Harvard University. If one were to look into the veracity of the tale she had spun, it would almost be heartwarming to know that Helene had done as she had so that she and her cousin could not be marked as rivals any further. If she could make sure to be at a different school, maybe they could stand a chance at being friends.
Attending Columbia University, Helene focuses on Financial Economics, finding the world of asset management fascinating ever since working in her father’s office over the summers. The more she reads into money, the hungrier she finds herself for a way into its world. It’s nearly unheard of nowadays, to start from the ground up with a management fund, and truthfully she is well aware of that. But, she wants to be a part of the greats. Those who so love history imagine the battles and wars waged through the centuries. The sieges of violence are those she finds no interest in. Instead, it is the wily tongues and steel backbones of mergers and acquisitions that fascinate her. She follows money, follows the finance section of The New York Times and the way a hungry dog follows the scent of food. And it is with unsurmountable hunger glowing in her eyes that she chases after it.
After she finishes her masters in France, following in the footsteps of an Arnault by attending INSEAD, and between the grunt-work stages of being a junior analyst at a firm that has her nearly ready to rip her hair out, she gets married.
It’s a sweet affair, a grand thing in the French countryside of the Chevalier family villa. Helene D’Autremont becomes the wife of Maxim Chevalier, a corporate lawyer from a family of lawyers that her father and his family had known for generations. They’re a powerful pair, a good-looking match (words a part of his grandmother’s blessing), and they’re perfect together. Back in New York they conquer their lives, the city with their own victories. He makes junior partner and has his own office and clients within the firm, while she ambitiously finds her way to become a senior analyst. They have a dog, a high-rise condo in the city, and the girl that had been raised to want for nothing continued to have everything she ever wanted. She even loves her husband, romance catching her by surprise and inspires utter delight— kindness and softness, after all, have never been her calling card.
Things are exactly as she wants, exactly as she had ever strived for, exactly as she wants everyone to see of her. Hugo and Renee could not be prouder.
Except, the outwards presentation of perfection will always come at a price. Helene’s career and ambition takes its toll on her marriage. Behind closed doors, Maxim’s brief affair with an old flame brings the image of perfection, brings a framed portrait of their wedding day, to the ground shattered. He says she’s lost sight of their shared goals, and she asks what kind of fool he thinks she is to want a child with a man who would cheat on her. Anger, hurt, pent up frustrations compounded over the years come to head in such a vitriolic display that one wonders if there truly was any love between them to begin with. But, the way the tears fall from her eyes says differently; the way he tenderly picks up their portrait after she’s left says differently. The corporate regime begins their whispers when Helene seems to be courted by a new firm that would require relocation. Her lofty expression is found on the Tatler social pages the next month and it’s rumoured that Maxim’s been on a ruthless winning streak in the courtroom since their fight.
From the outside looking in, Helene’s reasons for relocating to Crescent Harbor are harmless: her cousin is getting married, mother wants her to oversee renovations to the cottage and home, and with a few new acquisitions being eyed in Seattle, she’s to be a point of contact within commuting distance— a test before a likely promotion. Yet, truthfully: she hardly cares for her cousin’s wedding, the renovations could be overseen remotely, and if she were truly meant to be overseeing anything in Seattle she shouldn’t be two and a half hours away. Helene, in all her years of success, of taking and conquering like some covetous spoiled creature, wants respite. She wants to draw her husband out of the city, wants an opportunity for them to start anew away from the glittering cityscape of New York. Crescent Harbor had been used as a humbling experience once; perhaps it will work as a way to mend their marriage, too.
It is to be noted, however, that Helene has lost none of the proud tilt of her head. And that her smile, if anything, is more akin to a snarl. Her charm, if it could be called that, is in her honesty, is in the way that she cuts no corners for herself, is the way that she commands not only attention, but respect. Her father may have paid for many things, but her fortune and her position in life is her own.

Kenojuak Ashevak 1927-2013
Kenojuak Ashevak was one of Canada’s most acclaimed graphic artists. Her long list of achievements and honours is surpassed only by her stamina and good humour.
Born on south Baffin Island at a camp area known as Ikirisaq, Kenojuak grew up traveling from camp to camp on south Baffin and in Arctic Quebec (Nunavik). As a young woman, she was married to Johnniebo and lived with him in various camps including Keakto, a scenic area seven miles from Cape Dorset. While still living at Keakto in the late 1950's, both Kenojuak and Johnniebo first experimented with carving and drawing. They moved to Cape Dorset in 1966 in order for their children to attend school, and continued to work closely together until Johnniebo's death. Kenojuak’s drawings were immediately captivating, and she was represented in almost every annual print collection since 1959. Her work has also been included in numerous special projects and commissions. In 1961 she was the subject of a film produced by the National Film Board about her traditional life and art. The film is still shown today, and was instrumental in introducing her to the world beyond Cape Dorset. In 1970 her print, Enchanted Owl (1960) was reproduced on a stamp commemorating the centennial of the Northwest Territories, and again in 1993 Canada Post selected her drawing entitled The Owl to be reproduced on their .86 cent stamp.
Special commissions included the World Wildlife Print Portfolio released in 1978. In the same year, the Commonwealth Print Portfolio featured one of her works. Her art and life were the focus of the limited edition book entitled Graphic Arts of the Inuit: Kenojuak, published in 1981. In 1988, Via Rail Canada commissioned a large mural from Kenojuak for their Club Car series, which featured some of Canada’s most highly respected artists. Kenojuak's print Nunavut Qajanatuk (Our Beautiful Land) was commissioned by Indian and Northern Affairs Canada to commemorate the signing of the Inuit Land Claim Agreement in Principle, in April 1990. To commemorate the signing of the Final Agreement early in 1994, Kenojuak conceived and hand-coloured a large and exclusive lithograph entitled Nunavut.
April 1st, 1999 marked the official inception of the new Territory of Nunavut in Canada’s Arctic. To commemorate this historic event, Dorset Fine Arts released a special edition of 99 prints by Kenojuak – a large diptych entitled Siilavut, Nunavut (Our Environment, Our Land).
Kenojuak  received many special honours over the years. She was a Companion in the Order of Canada, which she originally received in 1967. In 1992, she was awarded Honourary Degrees from both Queen's University and the University of Toronto. In 1996 she received the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award at the National Aboriginal Achievement Awards Ceremony in Vancouver. In the spring of 2001, Kenojuak was inducted into Canada’s Walk of Fame, and traveled with her daughter, Silaqi, to attend the ceremonies in Toronto. She is the first Inuit artist to be so honoured, and joined many other famous and accomplished Canadians.
Kenojuak traveled all over the world as an ambassador for Inuit art. In 1969, she and Johnniebo traveled to Ottawa to collaborate on a mural which hung in the Canadian Pavilion at Expo '70 in Osaka, Japan. In 1980, she traveled to Rotterdam, Holland to be present at The Inuit Print exhibition which was opened by the Queen of the Netherlands. In 1991, she traveled to Soeul, South Korea to attend the opening of an exhibition of prints and sculpture, and in 1994, she was invited to open the exhibition Arctic Spirit: 35 Years of Canadian Inuit Art at the Frye Art Museum in Seattle, Washington. She also traveled to Ottawa in the fall of 1994 for the opening of Isumavut: The Artistic Expression of Nine Cape Dorset Women. In 2004, she was off to Germany to take part in cultural festivities celebrating the territory of Nunavut, and her contribution to Inuit graphic art. Her major stained glass commission was installed in the fall of 2004 at the John Bell Chapel at Appleby College just west of Toronto.
In the fall of 2007 Kenojuak traveled to Toronto to attend the launch of Cape Dorset Prints: A Retrospective – a major publication celebrating fifty years of printmaking at the Kinngait Studios. IN 2008, she added to her list of honours the Governor General’s Award for excellence in the visual arts. Sponsored by the Canada Council for the Arts, she traveled to Ottawa in March 2008 with her daughter, Silaqi, to attend the exhibition at the National Gallery and events at the residence of the Governor General. She was back in Ottawa in 2009 to participate in events surrounding the 50th anniversary of the Kinngait Studios.
In January, 2013, after a long and illustrious career, Kenojuak died peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family.
