This does not spark Joy (Dior, 2018 & 2019)
PREVIOUSLY ON: Jean Patou's Joy (1930) was voted the Scent of the Century, but for some mysterious reason, it's not manufactured anymore.
Dior fucking killed Joy.
I won't bury the lede here at all. It was Dior. And I love a good Dior, don't get me wrong. But in August 2018, LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton (which owns every damn thing, including Sephora and half the brands in it) bought the Jean Patou company (which had already changed hands twice). More importantly, they bought the name "Joy." And, somehow, their subsidiary Parfums Christian Dior had their own Joy, complete with Jennifer Lawrence ad campaign, ready to release two weeks later.
For a while, Designer Parfums was at least allowed to manufacture and sell Jean Patou's Joy in France. But now, according to the Patou website, the company's fragrances "are no longer in production." When "authorized outlets" run out, they're out. Because apparently, it was that important for Dior to keep anyone else from using the name "Joy."
So what did they replace the Scent of the Century with?
I had heard that Joy by Dior Intense was a huge improvement on the initial Joy by Dior (which infuriated fragrance aficionados itself by existing, clearly), and I'm glad I tried it first, because if I had started with the original ("original") Dior, I would have punched a wall. But let's start with that: I kept trying Dior Joy #1 over and over because I couldn't remember what it smelled like. It is literally, in the literal sense of literally, forgettable. I tried it one more time today in order to write this paragraph, and: it's soapy white musk. Which upset me initially, I remember now, because I'm just really not a fan of soapy/laundry white musk, but that's on me; I've seen user reviews that do really like Joy by Dior. On me, it's just bubblebath froth, eventually a sweet citrus that peeks up from under it, and a drydown that adds some vanilla to that. That's joyous, I guess?
What I will say is, unlike the other perfume that made me think of bubble baths, it didn't give me a panic attack, so it's got one up on Chanel. But it's just... was this necessary? Did we not have enough soapy white citrus-vanilla musks in the world? At the time, I was just asking myself this rhetorically, but then I kept reading up on the Dior Joy(s). As Victoria at Bois de Jasmin points out, the actual fragrance is a copy of yet another perfume:
The result is that Dior Joy is Allure Lite. The rose and jasmine are folded into a sandalwood accord reminiscent of Chanel’s fragrance. From the top notes to the drydown, Joy follows the course of Allure, but in a softer, more transparent interpretation. The mandarin peel dusted with sugar, the rose blended with the lemony jasmine, a touch of apricot and orange blossom that melt into the sandalwood and custard-like vanilla. Even the same contrast between the sweet citrus and creamy woods is maintained.
Mark Behnke at Colognoisseur:
[Dior perfumer François Demachy] chose to create a mash-up of two huge best-sellers. The citrus opening is straight out of Chanel Allure and the floral heart is Dior J'Adore. In other words, it is just a re-tread.
DIOR! WHAT ARE YOU FUCKING DOING!
I won't say that Joy Intense (Dior #2) is more like Jean Patou's, but at least it has less of a soapy musk opening. Let's compare the notes:
Joy by Dior (2018): White musk, Grasse rose, Grasse jasmine, mandarin orange, patchouli, bergamot, cedar, sandalwood.
Joy by Dior Intense (2019): Neroli, bergamot, Grasse jasmine, Grasse rose, vanilla, patchouli, musk, sandalwood.
[Note: Grasse, "the perfume capital of the world," is a region in France famous for its role in the history of French perfume; it is especially known for jasmine and roses. "Grasse rose," "May rose," and "Rose de Mai" all refer to Rosa x centifolia. "Grasse jasmine" is Jasminum grandiflorum, as opposed to, say, the licorice-friendly jasmine sambac.]
Further info from dior.com:
Get the absolute fuck out of here with this BOTTLE and this LOGO, what are you even doing. I did not even know a perfume could eat crackers
Joy by Dior, per the official website:
JOY by Dior Eau de Parfum is a bright smile, and a pure concentration of joy in a bottle. A juicy, vibrant top note gives way to an enveloping white heart of flowers and musks, just like a soft caress.
Again, I hated Dior's first Joy when I first put it on, but that's my own bias. It was just sheer disappointment that they centered this on synthetic white musk—you vaulted the Scent of the Century for this?
The "Intense" version:
Oh well if there’s a star on the bottom I guess I’m not mad anymore??
JOY by Dior Eau de Parfum Intense is a new olfactory burst, a scent of joy wherein flowers celebrate and explode in all their faceted beauty. The dazzling light of the juicy Citrus blends with the colorful shine of Rose and Grasse Jasmine, and is heightened by an enveloping woody echo of Sandalwood tinged with Vanilla. The fragrance results in a floral firework.
Fuck the actual fuck outta here. "Firework" my ass. It's fine, I guess. It smells like vanilla lemonade and some jasmine on me, with a pleasant lingering drydown. Not just the smell of lemonade, but sort of the feeling of happiness you get when drinking a sugary glass of it on a hot summer day. Don't ever say I don't try to be fair. And it's 1000% better without the white musk. I honestly wouldn't mind wearing this under a different name, but it's just so adequate. I put on Jean Patou's Joy, even a diminished Joy, and it was a revelation. I put on the Dior, even the "good" version, and it smells like copying what the popular girls wear in hopes that they’ll like you. Thank God they didn't stuff some Ambroxan in there while they were at it. The only reason Dior didn't dupe some trendy note from Baccarat Rouge 540 is because Francis Kurkdjian didn't work for them yet. What the fuck are you people doing.
Back to Colognoisseur:
[It] is puzzling why Dior would make the decision to produce a new perfume with the same name of a masterpiece. The cynic in me says because they’ve unleashed their market research staff and found out most consumers have no idea there is a previous classic perfume called Joy. [...] Joy by Dior is a good perfume put together via the perfume assembly line of focus groups and market research; as cynical as it gets in other words.
This is absolutely my take as well. I wore Jean Patou on one hand and Dior's Joy Intense on the other and compared how they unfolded in real time, and what struck me most at that point was how gourmand-adjacent the Dior is. Not entirely so, but the vanilla lemonade I get is far more in line with the cupcake and burnt sugar notes (WHICH I LIKE!) that fragrance brands have put in everything since Mugler’s Angel, rather than just let a floral be good—superlative—at being a floral. But the marketing department says that the Costliest Perfume in the World isn’t on trend in the 21st century; we can charge plenty for something simpler, more predictable, more pandering.
My other take is that Dior's Joy perfumes are formulated to inevitably be cheaper than Jean Patou's Joy, even what Joy was at the end of the company's life. I have smelled at least a Platonic shadow of the Costliest Perfume in the World, and (I don't care how much Grasse jasmine Dior claims is in theirs) this ain't it. I don't blame François Demachy; he was given a brief and he did his job. The man made not one but two versions of Hypnotic Poison. He has done more interesting things than this. Dior’s Joy has "cash grab" written all over it and it's not even bad. It's just WHY. Why would you DO THIS. I am going to stay mad and die mad about this. Jesus Christ. You can't even, like, gently reformulate the Jean Patou, put out the Demachy versions as flanker fragrances, and market them all? You have four kinds of Poison RIGHT NOW and you can’t figure this out?
And I wore these three perfumes for three weeks, I want you to know that. I alternated them day by day, sometimes wearing two at a time to compare. I gave them all many, many chances. And besides the fact that I personally don't like white musk very much, the two Dior Joys are not bad. They're not! They're just accessories to a minor act of cultural vandalism, is all. Imagine taking Botticelli's The Birth of Venus and saying, we're going to throw this out so we can have a photographer recreate it with Jennifer Lawrence. Everyone's wearing Dior Spring/Summer 2023 designs (including Venus). It actually looks pretty cool, I guess. Great, so we don't need the Botticelli anymore? When does the trash get picked up, Tuesday?
Even Disney doesn't vault its animated movies anymore after it remakes them as live action. Maybe I can scrape up enough couch change to buy a bottle of Real Actual Joy and some DVDs before anyone else gets some big ideas.

“The New Look” Episode 4 Review
The war has ended and Coco Chanel is celebrating, but is faced with the serious charge of being a Nazi collaborator. Meanwhile, Christian Dior struggles with an existential crisis in episode 4 of "The New Look".
Sneha Jaiswal (Twitter | Instagram) “You can’t possibly allow this man, this tormentor, this vampire to stifle your talents any longer! I need you by my side.” I think this is my favorite dialogue from “The New Look” episode 4, where Pierre Balmain, an unknown designer at the time, quits his job under French couturier Lucien Lelong and encourages his friend/colleague Christian Dior to do the…

TASK: WHAT DOES YOUR CHARACTER’S BEDROOM LOOK LIKE AT WOODROW HOUSE?
Natalia's room is very clean and very feminine. The walls were originally this dark wood color but she asked to have it painted white in her early teen years when having a certain aesthetic became important to her. In fact, everything in the room is white, from the walls to the sheets and a lot of the furniture. Accents are in gold or brass, and that's intentional. While she has a desk in her room, it was also very important to her to have a separate place to do her make-up, so she has a vanity area. Two different mirrors as well. One for make-up and one full-length one so she can review her outfits. Her closet is incredibly organized. By clothing type and then by color. She makes sure there are two fingers worth of space between the hangers. Most things in her closet are from Chanel. She's a Chanel girlie through and through. All of her make-up is Chanel as well. However, her perfumes? Diptyque. There's a shelf in her room. Only one row of it is used for books. It holds some some classic novels she adores that Richard recommended to her. Books on Greek mythology (her fave). A few books on art. Some in French. The rest of the shelves are decorated with antiques she's found over the years. She displays them all neat and pretty. She actually has some art up on her wall. The frames were found at various antique stores, as were the prints in them. It's usually of vintage landscapes or women. The whole space generally gives off very dainty, pretty princess energy.

10 Stars Who Flew The Flag For Sustainable Fashion In 2021
2021 has seen the fashion industry ramping up its efforts to reduce its impact on the planet. But it’s not just brands that are taking action, with a number of celebrities, too, flying the flag for sustainable fashion this year. Whether by wearing vintage or opting for an eco-minded designer, A-listers have a powerful role to play in influencing our shopping habits, and making conscious fashion the norm.
Bella Hadid
Bella Hadid is well-known for her love of vintage, with her penchant for archival Jean Paul Gaultier, Comme des Garçons and Stella McCartney-era Chloé only continuing to grow this year. She’s also added some more unexpected brands into the mix, including a micro skirt from Noughties favourite Abercrombie & Fitch.
Kendall Jenner
Another JPG obsessive, Kendall Jenner has given us some of our favourite vintage looks of the year, including this printed sheer number by the French brand. The model is also a fan of eco-conscious brand Havre Studio, which restores and refits vintage men’s suits found at flea markets in Mexico City.
Rihanna
From Chanel to Dior by John Galliano, Rihanna’s shown off a series of envy-inducing vintage pieces in 2021. She’s also continued to champion New York-born and London-based designer Conner Ives, who repurposes vintage jerseys and silk scarves as part of his approach.
Angelina Jolie
Angelina Jolie is known for her environmental work, so it’s no surprise that the actor and activist has taken a conscious approach to her wardrobe this year. For a trip to Paris in July, she opted for looks from both Gabriela Hearst and Chloé, the latter of which gained B-Corp status this year. Later on, her children appeared on the red carpet wearing past looks from her wardrobe, including her 2014 Oscars gown.
Emma Watson
Another star known for her environmental activism, Emma Watson has also championed a number of eco-minded brands this year. The actor wore an upcycled Harris Reed dress to the Earthshot Prize ceremony, while opting for an Emilia Wickstead look made using recycled yarn to meet Al Gore. Watson also later chose a full-look by Scandi upcycling brand Rave Review during Cop26, the United Nations climate conference, in November.
Zendaya
Zendaya has delivered some of her best looks to date in 2021, including a series of vintage pieces – ranging from ’90s Versace to Noughties Roberto Cavalli. With the British Vogue October issue cover star revealing she’s creating an archive with stylist Law Roach, it just goes to show how a slice of fashion history can make a real statement on the red carpet.
Timothée ChalametIt’s no secret that Timothée Chalamet sets the internet alight with every look he steps out in – which is why it’s great news that he’s been championing sustainably-focused brands. They include Stella McCartney, a favourite of his, as well as pieces from Prada’s Re-Nylon range – made from discarded fishing nets and other plastic waste.
Lorde
Lorde showed her commitment to sustainable fashion by wearing not one but two eco-minded looks on the night of the Met Gala. First came the embellished separates by Emily Bode, which celebrated craft and featured charms, beads and pennies dating back to the 1890s. Then, there was the after-party dress by Collina Strada (a brand that she also chose for her “Solar Power” video).
Jaime XieBling Empire star Jaime Xie made a point of wearing vintage during fashion month, including an instantly-recognisable sculpted dress from Balenciaga spring/summer 2008, a printed dress from Versace’s menswear spring/summer 2005 collection, and a Dior spring/summer 2004 silk dress, from when the house was under the helm of John Galliano.
The Duchess Of Cambridge
Arguably the most famous repeat-wearer out there, the Duchess of Cambridge chose to rewear two Jenny Packham gowns (including one that was a decade old) for her appearances at the Earthshot Award ceremony and Royal Variety Show this year. Away from the red carpet, Kate also championed sustainability, opting for a recycled vest from Ganni during Cop26, and a top-handle bag from British brand Tusting earlier on in the year.

✨+ Liesel ✨+ Olga ✨+ Marguerite ✨+ Nina ✨+Stefan. This is an open invitation for you to take the stage and talk to us about perfumes. I hear you are slightly interested in discussing the topic?
If you want to know my muse's fragrance send the ✨ (or sparkle) with a '+' & the muse's name. @lordofthestrix
Liesel is hands DOWN Bibliothèque by Byredo. I don't think she'd BUY this perfume for herself (IDK what she'd acutally buy tbh- maybe Mémoire d'une Odeur by Gucci) but Bibliotheque is what she DOES actually smell like naturally. Its light and fresh but with that paper and ink smell that just transports the senses to an airy monastery or library on a spring day with the sweet breeze coming through. A possibility for her is Paper by Commodity even though I'm not entirely sure because I've never smelled that one and its very tricky to nail the right aesthetic though it has been described as very bookshop like. I would LIKE to include something involving lavender, as many people has said they think Liese wears lavender, but I'm just going to assume she wears a lavender lotion or soap because I don't thinks she'd pick a lavender perfume. Perfume wise, Liese doesn't buy herself perfume? Its like jewelry for her- if someone gifts it she wears it, otherwise she doesn't think to buy herself perfume.
Olga's perfume is ACUTALLY known and its "The Rose" by Coty which is literally JUST rose according to notes and people's reviews so for a modern take I'd wager 'A La Rose' by Maison Francis Kurkdjian. I'm basing this off the reviews for the original which say its a clean pure rose and I'd definitely say MFK's 'A La Rose' is JUST the same and I should know I own a bottle and absolutely adore it.
Marguerite absolutely was one of the FIRST to wear/discover Baccarat Rouge 540 by Maison Francis Kurkdjian but after it hit popularity she stopped wearing it because everyone wore it. She likes a distinctive elegant scent like Portrait of a Lady by Frederic Malle or of course (!!!!) the infamous Delina by Parfums de Marly but again I feel its so popularized that she might not wear it though she does like it. What she MIGHT do is layer both perfumes together, but I do feel like Carnal Flower by Frederic Malle is definitely a Marg.uerite St. Ju.st scent because of the white florals which is the true marguerite at her core beyond the popularity of who society thinks she is. Or maybe even Le Bouquet de la Reine by Guerlain because she loves supporting French perfume houses and this scent is so floral, playful and light that it would just be a fantastic fragrance for her (aka the queen of the people).
Nina has stolen her mother's bottle of Mémoire d'une Odeur by Gucci but she also wears Florence by Tocca which is a green-white floral on a daily basis. Maybe Chloe by Chloe when she's feeling especially feminine or Coco Madmoiselle because its such a classic feminine scent. While Liesel is more dark academia scents then Nina is more Light academia / parisian scents like I could say hands down Nina would wear Chanel N'5 l'eau, not the original, with a rose or lily oil to layer the scent.
Stefan is a difficult one. He's a woodsy-clean-leather scent kind of person, but he's also...a bit stuck-up so I could see him wearing Tom Ford's 'Ombre Leather' as a signature scent or 'Oud for Greatness' by Initio for a date night or when he wants to feel good about himself. Spicebomb Night vision or Hermes Terre d'Hermes as a day to day, light, regular personal errands run.
#lordofthestrix#THIS was waaaaaaaay easier than for Tristan lemme tell you#this would've been done in five minutes except i had to go run errands#SO there you have it#also don't come at me abt the tom ford remark#his clothes are great but his perfumes miss the mark for the hype imo

During that time, she receives a news that the author of the book which was adapted for the screen 20 years ago where she play a main role and now in its remake, she’s doing another part, while a young sensation playing the main part. This is more like the evolution of cinema. The 20 years is too soon for her, while the cinema and its trend advanced rapidly. Precisely to say, the commercial films and young actors taking over the art films and true artists’ places respectively. If you at least 30 years old, you would get this film more than others. Because while I was growing up in the 90s, the cinema was so different. I’m not talking about the technology like computer graphics, but the story and how it was narrated for the screen. Now the science- fiction and dystopian themes taking over with the young audience and social media support. I think it was a quite meaningful film, particularly if you adore films like the recent evolution in cinema was so faster than ever. The negatives were, the film was too long, slow pace and too simple drama. The positives were, the actors and their performances, the locations, theme and some of the dialogues. Directed by a French filmmaker, this is an international project with a few guest appearances. Most of the film was set in the Alps. Totally different than what I was anticipating, but I still like, except in a few parts where I got bored for its weak development. So this is for the selected audience, that mean it will be appreciated by a very few and I’m kind of neutral with mostly in its favour. _6/10_ M...

Trans folks will someday be revered as the visionaries they are. Until then, the violence must end.

Young people conducted a number of sit-in demonstrations at Southern lunch counters to end Jim Crow laws of segregated public facilities, all while enduring the abusive taunts of onlookers and the crashing batons of local police. Demonstrators faced imprisonment and the imposition of permanent criminal records. Feminists formed a new wave in the fight for women’s suffrage against a high tide of obstructionism within a patriarchal system of male domination and misogyny, and an attitude that the enfranchisement of women would destroy Christianity and civilization itself. The Church convicted physicist and astronomer Galileo Galilei on the charge of heresy by insisting that the Earth revolves around the Sun, rather than, as per Church teaching, that the Earth was the immovable center of the universe with the Sun revolving around the Earth. Galileo spent the remainder of his life under house arrest. Joan of Arc, the teenager who helped defeat the English in her native France, became one of the greatest war heroes in French history. In spite of this, she was tried by the Catholic Church on the charge of heresy in rejecting Church authority in preference for direct inspiration from God, and most importantly, by donning men’s clothing. Joan died by burning at the stake. Alan Turing, mathematician, logician, philosopher, cryptanalyst, and one of the original creators of the computer was largely responsible for cracking Nazi coded messages, which many believe shortened the war by two to four years. Many also say he saved Great Britain. However, the British government chose to convict Turing on the charge of being homosexual and ordered him to undergo “chemical castration” by taking estrogen injections as an alternative to spending two years in prison. Turing took his life a few weeks before his 42nd birthday. Governments and powerful individuals have long devised ways of silencing opposition for the purpose of maintaining and extending their control and domination. They commit genocide upon the true human liberators, the profits, the visionaries who advocate for a just and free world. These… http://dlvr.it/T0Yg34

Finally, scarves are getting a look in. A sweet styling trick at some of the shows incorporated brooches in a new way. The french horns at Louis Vuitton are downright charming, the hand from Coperni a fun—and visual way—to play with the fabric, and the scarf rings at Saint Laurent the chicest cinch out there. Impactful earrings for pretty much every time of day or night. How maximalist you decide you go is up to you. Graze your shoulders a la Balmain and McQueen, or go gold and bold like AZ Factory. From left to right Chanel, Armando Grillo Schiaparelli, Alessandro Viero Givenchy, Armando Grillo. Chain link necklaces are a perpetual jewelry trend. Paris runways saw them close to the neck and at varying weights. Chanel, Schiaparelli, and Givenchy used chain link necklaces to enhance necklaces and, in Chanel’s case, allure attention to the neck. One or two wide cuff bracelets are a modern way to create a simple not simplistic and bold look. Cuffs on the runways were high on the texture level. We like these four options for various ways to interpret this trend.

World is on brink of catastrophic warming, U.N. climate change report says (Washington Post) Human activities have transformed the planet at a pace and scale unmatched in recorded history, causing irreversible damage to communities and ecosystems, according to one of the most definitive reports ever published about climate change. Leading scientists warned that the world’s plans to combat these changes are inadequate and that more aggressive actions must be taken to avert catastrophic warming. The report released Monday from the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) found that the world is likely to miss its most ambitious climate target—limiting warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) above preindustrial temperatures—within a decade. Beyond that threshold, scientists have found, climate disasters will become so extreme that people will not be able to adapt. Basic components of the Earth system will be fundamentally, irrevocably altered. Heat waves, famines and infectious diseases could claim millions of additional lives by century’s end.
Racism, misogyny rampant in London police force, ‘damning’ report finds (Washington Post) Racism, misogyny and homophobia are running rampant in London’s Metropolitan Police force, an official review of the institution found, recommending that the force undergo a dramatic overhaul to address deep-seated issues that it said have been exacerbated by a culture of “defensiveness and denial.” The Met commissioned the review after an officer admitted to kidnapping, raping and murdering a woman in 2021. Baroness Louise Casey said she had found “institutional racism, sexism and homophobia” in the Met. A “culture of denial” has prevented the force of more than 43,000 officers and staff from changing its ways, she wrote. Trust in policing has plummeted dramatically in recent years, with a recent survey finding over half of Londoners don’t trust the Metropolitan Police. Confidence in policing took a further hit when it was revealed in January that a serving officer had abused his position to lure and rape women over the course of nearly two decades.
Garbage: In Paris streets, heaps of it become protest symbol (AP) Garbage. Heaps, mounds and piles of it are growing daily—and in some places standing higher than a human being. A strike by Paris garbage collectors, which begins its 16th day on Tuesday, is taking a toll on the renowned aesthetics of the French capital, a veritable blight on the City of Light. “I prefer Chanel to the stink,” joked Vincent Salazar, a 62-year-old artistic consultant who lives in a tony Left Bank neighborhood. A pile of garbage sits at the corner of his building overlooking the Luxembourg Gardens. “I’ve seen rats,” he said. But like many nonchalant and strike-hardened Parisians, Salazar doesn’t mind. He is among the majority of French who, polls show, oppose President Emmanuel Macron’s decision to raise the retirement age by two years, from 62 to 64 for most and from 57 to 59 for garbage collectors.
Drone strikes, sabotage, shelling: Russia’s war on Ukraine comes to Russia (Washington Post) Three drones buzzed through the night sky on Feb. 27 over Belgorod, a Russian city just a couple dozen miles from the Ukrainian border. One drone smashed through the window of a sixth-floor apartment, startling a couple who were watching television. The other two crashed on nearby streets, denting parked cars and rattling the residents’ nerves. Ten days later, workers at an oil-pumping station in Novozybkovo, a small town in Russia’s Bryansk region, found a small bomb that officials said was probably dropped from a drone. Later that day, in Rostov-on-Don, a building of the Federal Security Service, or FSB, exploded in flames—the latest in a string of mysterious fires across western Russia. More than a year after President Vladimir Putin unleashed his invasion, Russia’s war in Ukraine is also being fought on Russian soil, and Moscow is scrambling to protect its borders. The war Putin expected to win quickly now encroaches daily on the lives of Russian citizens, with frequent reports of fires, drone attacks and shelling. Ukraine and its citizens, of course, are bearing the overwhelming brunt of suffering in the war. More than 8,000 civilians have been killed, according to the United Nations. Millions are displaced; whole cities have been reduced to rubble. But the longer the onslaught drags on, the more real it becomes for Russians, especially those living in border regions.
Earthquake-battered parts of Turkey hit by severe flooding (Washington Post) Already ravaged by last month’s earthquakes and their ripple effects, parts of southeastern Turkey were overrun this month by heavy rains that triggered flash floods. Piles of debris, cars, and in some cases, people, were carried away by fast-racing floodwaters, after heavy rains last week. At least 14 people have been killed and some remain missing, the country’s disaster management authority said, in racing floods that began March 15. Dramatic footage showed residents rushing into the water to rescue those stranded, dangling ropes and twisted sheets from windows to grab them. Search and rescue efforts for five missing people continued into the weekend. Millions of people left homeless from the earthquakes were staying in tents, cars and container houses when the flooding began.
Japan, China leaders visit rival capitals in Ukraine war (AP) Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida began a surprise visit to Kyiv early Tuesday, hours after Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in neighboring Russia for a three-day visit with Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine casting a shadow over both meetings. It comes after a week in which China and Japan both enjoyed diplomatic successes, and as both are increasing support for their favored sides in the ongoing war. Russian President Vladimir Putin warmly welcomed Xi to the Kremlin on Monday, starting a three-day visit the two major powers described as an opportunity to deepen their “no-limits friendship.”
Powerful earthquake rocks Pakistan and Afghanistan (CBS News) A strong earthquake lasting for at least 30 seconds was felt across much of Pakistan Tuesday night, witnesses said. "People ran out of their houses and were reciting the Koran," an AFP correspondent in Rawalpindi said, with similar reports coming from the capital Islamabad, Lahore and elsewhere in the country. There were varying reports about the quake's epicenter and strength, but the U.S. Geological Survey reported a 6.5 magnitude earthquake in the far northeast of Afghanistan, near the country's border with Pakistan. It was also felt in bordering Tajikistan, the Associated Press reported.
He’s the World’s Most Popular Leader. Beware. (NYT) All over the Indian capital these days loom posters of Narendra Modi, presenting him as the great modernizing prime minister pulling India forward. But those posters also hint at the opposite: an emerging personality cult and an authoritarian streak that is dragging India backward. In immediate political terms, the personality cult perhaps succeeds. With approval ratings at home of about 78 percent, Modi is far and away the most popular major leader in the world today, according to Morning Consult. But many worldly Indians are aghast that he has made India less secular and tolerant, creating what some argue is a Jim Crow Hindu nationalism that marginalizes religious minorities, particularly Muslims. Muslims are periodically accused of slaughtering cows, which are sacred to Hindus, and lynched. In a typical case this month, a mob in Bihar state accused a Muslim of carrying beef and beat him to death. Modi has presided over a crackdown on news organizations, and Indians have been repeatedly arrested for their tweets. Sweden’s V-Dem Institute, in a new report, listed India not as a democracy but as an “electoral autocracy” ranking 108th among 179 countries in its electoral democracy index. “It’s very scary what’s happening,” said Bunker Roy, founder of Barefoot College, one of India’s most celebrated rural development initiatives. “I think we’re going into authoritarianism.” Reporters Without Borders now ranks India a dismal 150th in press freedom among 180 countries worldwide.
Taiwan’s president to visit U.S., raising prospect of friction with China (Washington Post) Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen will visit the United States at the end of the month, stopping over in New York and California on her way to and from Central America, where she will try to shore up ties with the island democracy’s few remaining diplomatic allies. Tsai will travel from March 29 to April 7, stopping first in New York before heading to Guatemala and Belize and traveling through Los Angeles on the return leg, a spokesperson from Taiwan’s office of the president confirmed on Tuesday without providing an itinerary for any U.S. engagements. The trip, which will mark Tsai’s seventh visit to the United States since taking office in 2016, will include a meeting with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) at the Reagan Library in California on April 5, according to people familiar with the matter. In response to the announcement, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said on Tuesday that Beijing “firmly opposes the leader of the Taiwan region sneaking off to the U.S. for any reason.”
Muslim authorities say Ramadan fasting to begin Thursday (AP) Muslim authorities in Saudi Arabia and several other Middle Eastern countries say this year’s fasting month of Ramadan will begin Thursday based on the expected sighting of the crescent moon. During Ramadan, Muslims refrain from eating, drinking, smoking, and sexual intercourse from sunrise until sunset. Even a tiny sip of water or a puff of smoke is enough to invalidate the fast. At night, family and friends gather and feast in a festive atmosphere. The fasting is aimed at bringing the faithful closer to God and reminding them of the suffering of the poor. Muslims are expected to strictly observe daily prayers and engage in heightened religious contemplation. They are also urged to refrain from gossip, fighting or cursing during the holy month.
Top Israeli minister: ‘No such thing’ as Palestinian people (AP) A firebrand Israeli minister claimed there’s “no such thing” as a Palestinian people as Israel’s new coalition government, its most hard-line ever, plowed ahead on Monday with a part of its plan to overhaul the judiciary. Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich delivered a speech in Paris saying the notion of a Palestinian people was artificial. “There is no such thing as a Palestinian nation. There is no Palestinian history. There is no Palestinian language,” he said in France late Sunday. He spoke at a memorial event for a French-Israeli right-wing activist who denied the existence of a Palestinian nation and advocated annexation of the West Bank. The lectern was adorned with what appeared to be an image showing the map of Israel that included the occupied West Bank, Gaza and Jordan.
Saudi Arabia frees American imprisoned over critical tweets (AP) Saudi Arabia on Monday freed a 72-year-old American citizen it had imprisoned for more than a year over old tweets critical of the kingdom’s crown prince, his son said. Neither Saudi nor U.S. officials immediately confirmed the release of Saad Almadi, a dual U.S.-Saudi citizen and, until his imprisonment in Saudi Arabia, a longtime retiree in Florida. It was not immediately clear whether the kingdom would lift a travel ban it had imposed to follow the prison sentence to allow the elder Almadi to return to the United States. A retired project manager in the United States, Almadi was arrested in 2021 when he arrived for what was to have been a two-week visit to see family in the kingdom. Once in custody, he was confronted by Saudi authorities with tweets he had posted over several years from his home in Florida, his son says. Saudi Arabia had sentenced Almadi last year to 16 years in prison, saying his critical tweets about how the kingdom was being governed amounted to terrorist acts against it. The Florida man’s imprisonment over tweets had been one of several alleged human rights abuses that had soured relations between Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and President Joe Biden.
Report: 43,000 estimated dead in Somalia drought last year (AP) A new report says an estimated 43,000 people died amid Somalia’s longest drought on record last year and half of them likely were children under 5 years old. It is the first official death toll announced in the drought withering large parts of the Horn of Africa. At least 18,000 people, and as many as 34,000, are forecast to die in the first six months of this year. Somalia and neighboring Ethiopia and Kenya are facing a sixth consecutive failed rainy season while rising global food prices and the war in Ukraine complicate the hunger crisis.
Global happiness has been ‘remarkably resilient’ over the past three years (The Week) The World Happiness Report was released on Monday, ranking the happiest countries in the world based on average life evaluations from 150 nations. The good news is happiness remained “remarkably resilient” over the past three years, with global averages aligning with the three years before the pandemic, CNN reports. “Even during these difficult years, positive emotions have remained twice as prevalent as negative ones, and feelings of positive social support twice as strong as those of loneliness,” one of the authors of the report John Helliwell remarked. “Benevolence to others, especially the helping of strangers, which went up dramatically in 2021, stayed high in 2022,” he added. The report found that acts of benevolence were approximately one-quarter higher in 2022 than before the pandemic. “The objective of every institution should be to contribute what it can to human well-being,” the report says.

Givenchy FW23
From Luke Leitch's review for Vogue
Givenchy is a given—one of the big five—in the canon of French fashion. But unlike Chanel’s societally trailblazing menswear appropriation, Dior’s epoch shifting New Look, Yves Saint Laurent’s counterculturally adjacent runway revolt, or Balenciaga’s abstract invention, the founder’s patrician aspect and perceived conservatism (despite his close association with Balenciaga) means the house’s DNA is harder to glibly categorize.
[W]e opened with a baseline of waisted black tailoring, of which some (looks 1 and 5) was crafted in the couture atelier. The defining elements were generous box pleats at the back and two inward facing buttoned-down pleats running down each side of the jackets or coats. These sartorially creative details faded in favor of soft-shouldered double breasted mini-dress-jackets edged with organza trains. Then came two leather bouncer Jackets, one black one purple, that are the paradigm pieces of this Williams 2.0 phase at Givenchy. Big shouldered outerwear, a jean pocketed split black leather skirt under a split black mousseline blouse, and a strong shirred black leather dress followed before, at look 18, we hit the first of the adapted Givenchy archive pieces that would punctuate the rest of the collection.
The next few looks in double faced cashmere, variations of what had come before, arguably stretched this opening act out a little too long. Then we suddenly pivoted from deconstructed oversized monochromatic tailoring and separates—sophisticatedly conservative contemporary dressing for sure—into a second act that was all of Williams’s own invention. These were much more radical, layer cake looks in which distressed leathers were placed over knits, zippered leather skirts or kilts, and then houndstooth bonded frayed Japanese denim or kicky pants from menswear fabrics. Although the ingredients were various, these looks were built in similarly aggregate layers and finely reflected a similar instinct expressed back in January.
Sitting front row... was Carine Roitfeld, who has been consulting with Williams and Givenchy on womenswear. Said Williams of their interaction: “We have a dialogue about making desirable clothes. I am so inspired by the women around me. And you know, spending so much time with Carine, she understands the house so well. We literally just talk about clothes.” With Roitfeld, Williams is shaping a Givenchy womenswear identity that contains multigenerational, continent-striding multitudes.
