Just something I thought of.
~~~~~~~
The Government Officials are roaming an open area with the intention of building something there. The people living there are all currently protesting that idea, due to the fact that the area is one of their town's sources of materials. But...
Of course, they don't care.
"Careful not to step foot on the minefield."
"Got it."
"Gosh, will those townsfolk shut up?"
Danny Alforth, the lead official, scoffed. "They're being dramatic." He said as he leaned on a tree.
"Sir the minefield-"
"I know, I'm not gonna step on a mine."
The townsfolk continued to yell, protesting the mere idea of these people to strip off their main and only source of materials for some building.
"They're not gonna listen to us." Said Heather Chandler.
"We still have to try!" Said Heather McNamara.
"The whole town is yelling already! They're still ignoring us." Said Heather Duke.
"Ugh!" Heather McNamara groaned.
"Okay, calm down. I'm sure this situation will be resolved soon." Said Lyvara Diorre, a fellow townsfolk.
"Hope so." Said Heather Duke.
Danny groaned. "Assholes. HEY! I'm doing your town a favor!"
"How the hell is getting rid of our only source of materials a favor!?"
"Yeah! It's not like you give an actual shit about lower class citizens!"
"I'M ABOVE YOU UNDERSTAND?! Know your place, you low life cows!" Danny yelled.
"Sir, you're way too close to the minef-"
"YOU SWINES SHOULD LEARN TO RESPECT ME!"
"I need some water." Said Lyvara as she stepped away. She then contacted...a certain person. "Yo Cami, how you holding up?"
Camille Agerton, from the side with the officials, answered. "He's getting agitated right on time and on position."
"Cool, I'll let her know." Said Lyvara as she opened another contact. "Everything's in place."
Veronica grinned. "Perfect." She went to her balcony and signalled someone sitting on the roof next to the balcony.
Betty nodded and aimed.
She shot a landmine in the minefield with a very silent gun.
Causing the explosion, eventually killing Danny.
"Gotta hand it to you Ronnie, this gun is crazy silent." Said Betty.
"Using air pressure instead gun powder is what did that." Answered Veronica.
Betty chuckled. "Still, this was clean. All that will be released is that he got so agitated that he accidentally stepped on a landmine."
"Exactly. And without him, they can't really proceed with this building idea. As this was simply a decoy inspection."
"Huh?"
"Why do you think we had to get rid of him? From investigation, I found out a lot of things."
"Which are?"
"Danny Alforth. A very self-serving man who burnt down his own home, killing his wife and employees in it. All for insurance money. Of course, no one actually knows that. And now, he plans to strip that town of their only source of materials." Veronica chuckled. "Our friend from the government 'approved' this inspection. It's why we were able to pull this one off."
Betty nodded. "I see."
Veronica smirked.
They've done it again.
Introduction: Nestled in the heart of Arizona, Chandler is a city known for its vibrant community and sunny days. Whether you're a longtime resident or a newcomer to this thriving city, understanding the need for timely and efficient Roof Repairs in Chandler, AZ, is essential for maintaining the structural integrity and comfort of your home. In this guide, we'll explore key considerations for roof repair in Chandler and why investing in the right services is crucial.
Sun, Heat, and Your Roof: Chandler's climate is characterized by intense sunlight and high temperatures, making roofs susceptible to sun damage and deterioration. UV rays can accelerate the aging process of roofing materials, leading to issues such as cracked shingles, faded colors, and weakened seals. Regular inspections are vital to assess the impact of the sun and address any resulting damage promptly.
Early Intervention for Longevity: Proactive homeowners understand the value of early intervention when it comes to roof repairs. Chandler's climate can exacerbate issues, making it crucial to catch problems like leaks, damaged flashing, or missing shingles before they escalate. Regular inspections, at least once a year, can help identify and address these concerns in their early stages.
Expert Roof Repair Services: When it comes to addressing roofing issues, relying on professional repair services is key. Chandler homeowners should seek roof repair services with a proven track record of excellence in the local community. From patching up leaks to replacing damaged materials, a skilled roofing team can provide tailored solutions that withstand the challenges of the Arizona climate.
Swift and Effective Solutions: Chandler residents know the importance of swift action, and the same principle applies to roof repairs. A dependable roofing service understands the urgency of addressing issues promptly, minimizing potential damage to your home. From storm damage to routine wear and tear, efficient repairs ensure the ongoing protection of your property.
Quality Materials for Lasting Results: The use of high-quality materials is paramount in ensuring the longevity of roof repairs. Chandler's homeowners should choose a roofing service committed to using durable and weather-resistant materials. Quality craftsmanship combined with top-notch materials provides lasting results, protecting your investment for years to come.
Energy-Efficient Roofing Solutions: With the desert sun beating down, energy efficiency is a consideration for savvy homeowners. Explore energy-efficient roofing solutions, such as reflective materials or cool roofing systems, which can help regulate indoor temperatures and reduce energy consumption.
Emergency Roof Repair Services: Arizona weather can be unpredictable, and emergencies may arise when you least expect them. A reliable roof repair service in Chandler should offer emergency response capabilities, ready to address sudden issues like leaks or storm damage promptly.
Conclusion: Your home in Chandler deserves the best protection, and that starts with a robust and well-maintained roof. By understanding the unique challenges posed by the desert climate and investing in timely and efficient roof repairs, homeowners can ensure the ongoing safety and comfort of their residences. Trusting a reputable roofing service in Chandler, AZ, is the key to securing your home against the sun's intensity and unpredictable weather patterns. Safeguard your investment with the right professionals for reliable and lasting roof repairs.
17 Curious Facts About Cincinnati Cats And Cincinnati's Curious Cat Fanciers
What Is A Cat Worth?
A cat, according to C.G. Pemberton of Withamsville, is worth the same as a Ford motor car or a Chandler & Price Gordon-Style printing press. That’s according to a classified advertisement Mr. Pemberton placed in the Cincinnati Post on 14 June 1921. Intriguingly, he offered his printing press in exchange for either a Ford, or a tomcat, or a yellow dog, or an “educated bluejay.” One suspects there is a curious story there, but the Post never investigated. Maybe it was code for a bootlegging operation.
An Alligator Cat?
Nellie Isaminger was a popular nurse at the City Hospital, where she supervised the staff in Ward K. She was also the owner of a most curious feline. The cat was born at the hospital and considered quite intelligent. According to the Cincinnati Enquirer [10 May 1897]: “The peculiarity of the animal is that all its four legs are only an inch long, so that the animal is forced to proceed alligator fashion, by dragging its stomach on the ground and wriggling its shoulders and hind quarters to aid locomotion.” Miss Isaminger named her unusual cat Dot.
A Kangaroo Cat?
Thomas Evans, a salesman living on York Street in Newport, invited the Kentucky Post to photograph his “kangaroo cat” in 1914. The little kitten, just five weeks old, was born with only two little bumps where his forelegs should be, and taught itself to get around by hopping on its hind legs. For normal locomotion, the two rear legs sufficed, but when in a hurry, the little feller employed his tail as an additional extremity.
The Traitor Cat
Bessie Cline, of 210 Broadway, had a cat named after herself. Mrs. Cline hated rats and her feline namesake was a good ratter, so they got along famously. Bessie, the cat, birthed four little kittens and Mrs. Cline envisioned an entire platoon of rat-chasers. And then, as the Post [9 July 1930] reported, Mrs. Cline’s son Frederick announced that two more kittens had joined the brood. On inspection, Mrs. Cline found Bessie nursing two young rats. The Post consulted experts, who said mother cats nurturing rodents was normal. Mrs. Cline was not amused.
The Tomcat Peace Warrant
A cat sent two Cumminsville women into court in 1907. It seems four-year-old Helene Meyder brought a tomcat home, without mentioning that the cat actually belonged to Thelma Vorherr, who lived just a couple doors away on Collins (now Cass) Street. Thelma, discovering her pet had been cat-napped, charged up the block and let Minnie Meyder, Helene’s mother, know exactly what she thought of her and the horse she rode in on. The very air was blued and Minnie went to court to get a peace warrant, forcing Thelma Vorherr to keep her opinions to herself.
An Official Cat Catcher?
For many years, Cincinnati had an official dog catcher – a job either thankless or repellant depending on one’s opinions of canines. In 1908, a songbird-loving Cincinnati City Councilman named Robert O’Brien sponsored legislation that would have required all cats in the city to be licensed at a cost of one dollar annually, to be tagged, to be muzzled while at large and to be removed from the streets and disposed of if found in violation. O’Brien’s ordinance, which failed in committee, would have created the position of official cat catcher.
Curiosity Caught The Cat
Marion Scarborough owned a Persian cat she valued, in 1934, at $300 – or almost $6,500 in today’s dollars. While she worked downtown as a stenographer, she was in the habit of letting the pet sun itself on the roof of the apartment building she lived in at 3209 Reading Road. One day she returned and her cat was missing. A diligent search found the curious feline stuck in the elbow joint of a downspout. Ladder Company Number 4, more familiar with getting cats out of trees, engaged in some creative plumbing to free the embarrassed cat.
Bill Taft The Hunter
In the early days of the Twentieth Century, the ink-stained wretches who wrote for Cincinnati’s many newspapers constituted the Pen & Pencil Club and met in a suite of rooms in the old Grand Opera Building on Vine Street, south of Sixth. They shared their clubhouse with a cat named Bill Taft. (The future President and Chief Justice was a newspaper man before he took up politics.) Bill – the cat not the politician – was famous for hunting sparrows on Fountain Square and dragging their little carcasses back to the Opera House.
Cat On The Beat
The Hammond Street Police Station went into mourning in the spring of 1878. Corporal Tom was missing and presumed dead. Tom was a tomcat, known as a good mouser, and had made his home at the Hammond Street Station since 1864. Though only accorded corporal status, Tom stood next to the lieutenant at every roll call and inspected each patrolman. When the station was closed for renovations, Tom moved temporarily to the St. James Hotel, but returned during the ribbon cutting of the new station. Before he disappeared, Tom had been showing the effects of old age. He was never found.
100 Percent Episcopalian Cats
Harry Leist, longtime sexton at St. Paul’s Cathedral at the northeast corner of Seventh and Plum streets, had a cat population explosion going in 1930. Mine No. 1, the cathedral’s unlikely named official mouser, had just given birth to three coal-black kittens. Bishop Henry Wise Hobson decreed that one kitten might stay with its mother, but the other two would have to go. Then, Mine No. 1’s mother, ensconced at the diocesan house, delivered five more kittens. Harry called the newspapers and announced that, even though all the kittens were 100 percent Episcopalian, he would place them with any kind-hearted soul, regardless of creed.
The Manx Monster
Although firemen have been identified with Dalmatian dogs for many years, Cincinnati’s firehouses often found a warm corner for a mascot cat. Usually the feline guest was a local tomcat of indeterminate lineage but, in 1901, Engine Company 23 in Walnut Hills adopted a pet so unusual, lines formed to get a gander at it. His name was Alexander and he was dropped off by a neighbor, who informed the fireman it was a Manx cat, from the Isle of Man, with a tiny nubbin of a tail and six claws on each foot. Alexander chased off Horace, the incumbent mouser, and usurped his duties.
A Guard Cat
It was fairly common for public establishments in Cincinnati to keep a cat around, mostly for pet control. Joseph Hahnel, who ran a café at Sixth and Monmouth streets in Newport, learned a good cat also provided excellent security. Around midnight one evening in 1926, a dog barged into Hahnel’s café while showing all the signs of rabies and attacked two customers. One jumped on top of a pool table, while the other sought refuge on the bar. Tabby, Hahnel’s elderly tomcat, was awakened by the commotion and leapt upon the intruder, chasing the rabid pooch into the night.
Don’t Mess With The Pressroom Cat
From time to time, most Cincinnati newspapers found space for an office cat and the old Commercial Gazette was no exception. In 1889, a very comfortable and very jealous cat had staked out its domain in the fifth-floor stereotyping department. Somehow, a strange cat found its way upstairs and marched into the stereotyping room as if it owned the place. The established feline took offense, there was a swirling cyclone of fur and claws and the newcomer leaped out an open window, five floors up, on the Race Street side. All worked stopped and the men ran over to catch a glimpse of the corpse, but all they saw was one defeated tomcat running, hell-bent for leather, through the Race Street crowds.
A Master Mendicant
The cat had no name. It was a non-descript grey tomcat and it hung around the Central Union Depot – Cincinnati’s largest train station before Union Terminal replaced it. One day in 1910, the tomcat used up one of his nine lives by zigging when it should have zagged as a baggage truck rolled by, shearing off one of the poor tom’s feet. The wound healed and the lucky tomcat learned to milk sympathy and treats from women passengers in particular. The little beggar haunted the lunch counters and dining tables, purring and rubbing against a silk-stockinged leg until a few cuddles and some sustenance was forthcoming.
Cat Bones In The Privy
Who dumped 60 kittens in a West End privy in 1885? More importantly, why? Mark S. Warner and Robert A. Genheimer, in a 2008 paper published in Historical Archaeology, describe the excavation of a privy in Cincinnati’s Betts-Longworth district from which they recovered a large quantity of cat bones, mostly from kittens. Although they offer several theories, ranging from urban sanitation to animal population control to carcass disposal to antisocial behavior, the authors admit there is no conclusive evidence for any of the hypotheses.
Cat’s Ghost Made Me Do It
For all of her unhappy life, Isabelle Phelps claimed to be haunted by the ghost of her cat. It was the spirit of this dead cat, she said, that drove her to murder. Isabelle was self-employed, peddling toiletries on the streets while living in a tenement on Richmond Street in Cincinnati’s West End. She was often on the road to Dayton, Miamisburg, Lebanon, Middletown and Hamilton, where she sometimes took rooms with the Walker family. One morning in 1911 at breakfast, Isabelle pulled a gun from her waistband and shot her landlord in the head at point-blank range, then fired the rest of the bullets at Mrs. Walker. Her defense – that the ghost of her cat was responsible – did not sway the court. She was remanded to the Lima State Hospital for the Criminally Insane. She died there, a victim of cholera, in 1926.
Thauwald’s Amazing Cat
In 1901, Theodore Thauwald ran a saloon on Richmond Street at Central Avenue. Mr. Thauwald had a most peculiar cat named Terry McGovern II, named for a noted bantamweight boxer of the day. This cat displayed unique markings in the fur along its back, neck and head, resembling a snake. Instead of charming little birds with its eyes, like other cats, Terry used his secret weapon, approaching sparrows with his nose held close to the pavement, the snake-like pattern in full view. Exposed to the cat’s serpentine design, birds froze in fright and were easily dispatched. And then the witnesses adjourned to Herr Thauwald’s tavern for a drink.
Out of the Blue: To the Rescue
Author’s Note:
This chapter was the most exciting one to write. I hope you enjoy reading it too!
Chapter 9: To the Rescue
"His misfortunes!" repeated Darcy contemptuously; "yes, his misfortunes have been great indeed."
"And of your infliction," cried Elizabeth with energy. "You have reduced him to his present state of poverty--comparative poverty. You have withheld the advantages which you must know to have been designed for him. You have deprived the best years of his life of that independence which was no less his due than his desert. You have done all this! and yet you can treat the mention of his misfortune with contempt and ridicule."
(An excerpt from Pride and Prejudice, by Jane Austen)
The day of Sam and Mercedes’ wedding, Blaine was woken up at a quarter to four in the morning by the PI, who informed him that Chandler had gone to the restaurant at night, broken in and started a fire. It had all gone too fast for the PI to prevent it or put the fire out without too much damage. “Must have used gasoline or something, the fucker!”
However, the PI did have all the proof needed to convict Chandler for arson, so that was a plus.
“He’s gone somewhere else now. Jack’s following him. I have to stay here until the firefighters arrive.”
“Keep me posted.”
“Will do.”
Not even ten minutes later, the phone rang again, this time around to tell Blaine that Chandler had wreaked havoc at the church. Again, the PI had failed to prevent the damage. He did have proof of Chandler’s misdeeds, though.
That rat! That fucking bastard! Who the hell does things like that! He’ll pay for this! But first, I need to fix it. I won’t give him the satisfaction of having ruined the wedding. No, sir.
“Enough!” Blaine hissed. “Tell me where he’s heading now!”
“I think he’s going to the bakery. Mulberry Drive 224.”
“The both of you, go there as fast as you can and grab Chandler BEFORE he ruins the wedding cake. I’ll call the police and then I’ll be on my way to Lima, too.”
Before he left his parents’ house, he shook Cooper awake and told him what was happening.
Coop, once he was awake enough to pay attention, swore under his breath, and then took a wad of cash and his credit card out of his wallet and handed all of it to Blaine. “Go and fix this, Blaine. I don’t care how much it will cost. You need to save this wedding. Oh, this is all my fault, I should have used my influence to put Chandler behind bars for what he did to Kurt. The guy’s crazy!”
Blaine shook his head. “This is not your fault. If anything, it’s mine! I should have contacted our PI long before now, and I should have put two and two together.”
“No use arguing now,” Coop said. “Go!! I’ll make your excuses to Mom and Dad, and I’ll come to the church as fast as I can so I can help out, too.”
Shortly after seven in the morning,, Blaine was surveying the damage at the church. The minister and his wife were with him, sad and subdued.
“And to think we were worried about ever raising enough money to repair the roof,” the wife whispered, and started crying, her hand over her mouth.
The minister took her in his arms to comfort her, and said, “This looks worse than it is, Doris. Nothing some cleaning and scrubbing and painting won’t fix.”
Blaine took his chance. “Reverend, I’ll pay for everything, also the roof and any other repairs the church might need, if you can help me save the wedding today.”
The minister patted his arm. “No need to bribe us. We love Sam and Mercedes, and of course we’ll do our utmost to get this mess cleaned up in time. I’ll contact everyone I know, and I’m sure they’ll all chip in.”
Blaine grimaced. “It’s not just the church.”
He explained about the restaurant burning down, and saw the minister frown, deep in thought.
Then Doris suggested, “We could use our garden, right, Jim? And the ladies of our congregation could help out with the food. It won’t be much, and it won’t be fancy, but at least it’ll be something. Maybe we could have a barbecue? We can use our grill, and Mr. Rogers will lend us his, too, I’m sure.”
The minister nodded, a slow smile stealing over his face as he squeezed his wife’s hand.
“That sounds wonderful,” Blaine said. “I’ll arrange for meat and fruit and vegetables and so on to be delivered to your house then, ma’am. Also the wedding cake, which is thankfully unharmed. Could you please make me a list of everything you ladies will need?”
He followed the minister to his house, inspected the garden, which was certainly big enough and then some, and helped Doris compile a list of food for the barbecue.
“We’ll also need decorations,” she said hesitantly. “For the church, and for here in the garden. And lights. Crockery and silverware. Tables and chairs too. I could ask the parishioners, but I don’t know…”
“On it,” Blaine promised. “Here’s my cell phone number. If anything else comes to mind, you text or call me, okay? Or if there is any problem, just holler and I’ll fix it for you. All right? That’s kind of my job, problem-solving, and I’ve got all sorts of handy connections.”
She nodded and smiled at him. “Sam and Mercedes must be very good friends of yours for you to go to all this trouble.”
Blaine smiled back. “Sam’s a great guy. And he deserves a perfect wedding.”
From then on, the rest of the morning was a blur of activity. Blaine tackled the decoration issue first, knowing they’d need all the time they could get. Remembering how the loft and terrace had looked at that first wedding Kurt had organized, he searched for a beautiful gauzy fabric to hide any imperfections with, and bought the shop’s entire supply of it. He also stocked up on string lights, table cloths and runners, centerpieces, napkins, china, silverware and glasses, and bought a mountain of food, dozens of champagne and wine bottles and fizzy drinks for the children, as well as cooler boxes and refrigerators to store everything in, and sent it all over to the minister’s along with the wedding cake.
While handing the delivery boy a tip, he got a phone call from Sam, and knew that he had to trust the ladies of the church to organize and carry out the rest of the tasks there, because he couldn’t go back to the church and help. Sam’s predicament sent him in another direction.
Sam was usually so relaxed and zen that Blaine hadn’t immediately recognized the voice on the phone, panicked as it sounded. The gist of the matter was that Sam’s best man had disappeared. He’d been staying with his parents for the weekend, but according to them, he hadn’t returned from the rehearsal dinner they’d had the previous evening. His bed hadn’t been slept in. He also hadn’t called or texted, and his phone went straight to voicemail. His suit was hanging on the wardrobe next to his bed, but the wedding rings were nowhere to be found.
“What am I gonna do?”
“You don’t need to do a thing, Sam,” Blaine assured him. “I’ll handle this. All I need is for you to send me a recent picture of the guy that’s missing. I’ll also need to know his full name and his birth date and what he was wearing last night. Oh, and his telephone number. Maybe we can track his cell phone to find him.”
Blaine hurried to his car, and rummaged in the glove compartment for a pen and a piece of paper so that he could jot everything down.
Sam was silent for a minute. “Wow. You always know what to do, don’t you? All right, it’s Michael Robert Chang Jr., born on the 28th of April 1982. I can’t look up his number on my phone while I’m calling you, so I’ll text you his number later. What was he wearing yesterday? I really can’t remember. I’ll call his mom and get back to you, okay?”
“Just give me her number, that’s faster,” Blaine told him. “Text me both Michael’s number and his mother’s. And a picture, please.”
“Kay. And what do I do about the rings?”
“Easy. Tell me what jeweler the rings are from, and I’ll get you new ones. And I’ll gladly stand in as your best man, unless you’d rather ask someone else.”
“You will?”
“Absolutely.”
“Thanks, man. You’re a lifesaver!”
Blaine jotted down the jeweler’s name and address and rang off. After a short call to Mrs. Chang, he compiled an e-mail with all the information plus the photograph, and sent it to his PI, asking him to track down the missing best man.
He was already buckling in and starting the engine to head to the jeweler’s when his phone rang again.
“Ugh, what now?!” he grumbled, but he accepted the call.
It was the minister, who told Blaine there were protesters in front of the church.
“Protesters?” Blaine asked. “What are they protesting against?”
The minister let out a long sigh. “Mixed marriage.”
“Seriously? In the twenty-first century?”
“Yes, I’m afraid so. I told them to leave, but they wouldn’t budge.”
“Okay. I’ll sort it out, Reverend, I promise. In the meantime, tell your people to stay away from those nutcases, in case they become aggressive.”
“I will. Thank you so much.”
Blaine tapped with his fingers on his dashboard and groaned in frustration. Chandler, while being led away by the police that morning, had laughed and shouted at him, “Good luck fixing this mess! I’ve got some more surprises in store for you!”
Well, he certainly hoped that this was the last unpleasant surprise.
He called his friend Wes, who worked for his father, the mayor of Westerville, and explained the situation.
“You’re in luck. It’s outside of my dad’s constituency, but our riot control team has a training exercise near Lima today, so I’ll brief them about this situation and send them over, and it can be comped as extra training.”
“I’ll pay for everything. I want this wedding to go off without a hitch.”
“Are you the best man or something?”
“Yes, I am. Thanks, Wes, I knew I could count on you!”
At the jeweler’s, they explained to him that they couldn’t provide him with two replacement rings on such short notice. When Blaine told them that he only needed the order form for the original rings and could head to any other jeweler with that information, they backed down quickly. “Well, we can’t offer you the exact same rings, but we can show you a selection of very similar ones.”
Blaine looked at what they had. For Sam, there would be no problem. His ring was a simple band of white gold, which they had in stock. All that lacked was the inscription. Mercedes’ ring was more intricate, but the rings on offer did resemble the picture on the order form.
Blaine chose the one that looked most like the original, though in platinum and with more diamonds, and whipped out Cooper’s credit card to pay for both rings.
The jeweler looked over the moon, until Blaine insisted on both rings being engraved straight away. “The original inscription, please.”
“But… but… That takes hours!”
“You have until a quarter to three,” Blaine informed him, settling down on the plush sofa in the jeweler’s waiting room. “I’ll wait.”
While he was at the jeweler’s, he checked in with everyone.
He briefed Cooper about Chandler’s misdeeds, and urged him to go to the church asap to see if anything else needed to be arranged. “Already there, bro! I’ll handle things at the church, don’t you worry.”
He asked his PI for updates, and just after noon, he got word that Michael Chang Jr. had been found in Faurot park. Drugged, unresponsive and suffering from hypothermia, but otherwise okay.
Blaine asked for Michael to be brought to the nearest hospital, and called Mrs. Chang to tell her the news.
Then he contacted the minister again to tell him a riot control team was on the way, and to know how the clean-up and decorating was going. The minister sounded a lot happier than last time he heard him. The riot team had already come and taken the protesters away, and everyone from the neighbourhood was helping out. Both the garden and the church were starting to look festive.
“Do you have everything you need?”
“I think we do, yes. Thank you!”
After twiddling his thumbs for a while, it occurred to Blaine that Mercedes and Sam would need music, too, for their first dance and the ensuing party, so he called Thad, who’d started a band after he graduated and was always looking for gigs. Thad and his band mates weren’t yet booked for that day, and agreed to play at the wedding.
“Sure, dude. We’ll be there! What’s the song for the first dance?”
“I’ll give you the groom’s phone number, you can talk through the setlist with him. Best stick to a cappella singing or bring your own power supply, ‘cause the party is in someone’s garden, and we wouldn’t want to cause a blackout.”
“Right.”
“I’ll pay you guys tonight, when you arrive, okay? See you then!”
Finally, the rings were done, and Blaine paid for the engraving and gave the jeweler a hefty tip for doing it so quickly.
The smell of grilling meat hit his nose when he stepped outside, and his stomach growled. He’d forgotten to eat breakfast that morning, and in the meantime it was – he checked his watch – half past two. Also, he still had to shower, shave and do his hair and put on the suit he’d brought for the occasion. Which was at his parents’ house in Westerville. There was no way he’d be able to drive there and get back to Lima on time. But he couldn’t show up unkempt and unshaven either.
Think, Anderson.
But his energy was depleted, and instead of hurrying to sort this out, too, he sagged against his car and passed a hand over his eyes.
His phone rang, and he grabbed it sluggishly. It was Cooper.
“Hey squirt! If I know you, you’re still out there somewhere in your sweats and with your bedhead, right? Well, seeing as you’re cutting it close, I’ve brought your suit here, and I’ve asked the minister if you could use his bathroom to get ready. Oh, and I’ve ordered pizza. You probably haven’t eaten a bite yet all day.”
Blaine let out a shaky laugh. “Thanks, Coop.”
“No problem. Get here pronto, and there still might be a meat lovers pizza for you.”
Blaine felt much better once he was all spruced up and had some food in his belly. He followed Sam into the church, noting that the protesters were gone and that any trace of the vandalism had been wiped out or camouflaged.
As the bride came down the aisle, everyone sitting in the pews was smiling, so he hoped with all his heart that all the hiccups had been dealt with now, and that the wedding would be smooth sailing.
Wait, did he say everyone? Kurt was looking straight at him, and seemed put out about something.
Blaine inclined his head and smiled hesitantly at his crush, who responded with a fierce glare.
What was that about? Oh… Had Blaine missed a best man cue? He pulled his attention back to the ceremony, but no, the minister was still talking, and all he had to do at the moment was stand there and listen.
He liked the minister’s sermon. He spoke of love not being a feeling but a commitment, something to work on every day. It was no-nonsense and poignant, and the sentiments expressed struck a chord with him.
He couldn’t help stealing a glance at Kurt every now and then. Kurt was wearing a light grey tuxedo, and looking so much like Blaine’s daydreams about them getting married that it made Blaine want to go and kiss him.
The exchanging of the vows and the rings came and went, and Mercedes didn’t seem to have noticed her ring was slightly different from the one she’d chosen.
Still, Blaine didn’t breathe easy until the ceremony was over and everyone was in the minister’s garden, laughing and talking and queuing at the buffet.
There had been no more alt-righters outside the church when they all filed out, the garden looked like a dream and the food smelled amazing, even after that large pizza Blaine had gobbled up earlier. Now he hoped that Thad and his band mates would arrive on time, and then there would be nothing more to worry about.
Thad did turn up, and Blaine bopped his head happily to the music as he worked up the courage to ask Kurt to dance, moving closer to him where he was chatting with the bride.
When he got within hearing distance, he was dismayed to hear that Kurt disapproved of him as the replacement best man. Kurt’s assessment of him stung, but Blaine had to admit that he had a point. Blaine had lost his temper around Kurt on several occasions, and yes, he had been rude.
Determined to make up for past mistakes, Blaine pasted on his most charming smile as he endeavoured to catch Kurt’s attention and then asked him to dance.
Kurt blushed, actually blushed, when he saw Blaine, and his mouth fell open when Blaine held out his hand for him to take.
After Kurt’s diatribe, he’d expected to be turned down flat, but miraculously, Kurt said yes, and moments later, Blaine was in seventh heaven with Kurt in his arms.
He didn’t feel much like talking, wanting to soak up every aspect of this dance so he’d be able to relive it a million times in daydreams. However, he made an effort to be sociable by praising first the ceremony, then the wedding dress, and then Kurt’s prowess, when it turned out Kurt had made the dress himself. Wow, was there anything he couldn’t do?
Kurt let out the cutest giggle at the compliment, and it made Blaine giddy. He was making progress here, wasn’t he? Real progress!
Yet there had been that glare earlier, and Kurt darkly referring to horrible things Blaine had done.
Before he knew it, Blaine had asked what that had been all about, and then wished he’d held his tongue,, because Kurt looked spitting mad again, and brought up the incident at the wedding where they met, and… What? The way Blaine had treated Chandler? Shouldn’t that be the other way round? Chandler was by no means the victim here!
But when Blaine said so, Kurt’s retort made it seem like he thought Blaine and Chandler had been dating at one time. What kind of lies had Chandler been telling him?
Must not lose my temper… Must not lose my temper…
Blaine kept his reply short and to the point, and as soon as he’d set Kurt straight, he strode out of the garden before he could blow up entirely.
Ugh, that little weasel! What on earth did he tell Kurt? And is there no end to his manipulation and sabotage?
By the time he reached his parents’ house, he was a little bit calmer, and had decided to send Kurt an e-mail with the cold hard facts and the evidence. Heaven knew there was enough of it by now. And then Kurt could decide whom he wanted to believe.
It rankled how Kurt was so ready to believe the worst of Blaine and the best of Chandler. But at least on that count, Blaine had the truth on his side. The rant at the wedding, however, had been entirely Blaine’s fault, and he’d apologise for that once more. And he would strive to conquer his temper. He would.
An hour and a half later, he re-read what he’d written, checked the attachments, and then logged into Cooper’s work mail account to find Kurt’s e-mail address. It wasn’t stalking, okay? It wasn’t. Blaine didn’t plan on writing to Kurt ever again, but he deserved to know the truth. And Blaine deserved… closure.
After this, he’d stay away from Kurt. He was determined not to seek him out again. He’d leave the initiative up to Kurt.
Yeah, tell that to someone who’ll believe you…
Three Reasons For Air Duct Cleaning in Armonk NY
Of all the arguments for air duct cleaning in Armonk NY residents need to pay close attention to the three listed below. A family's home is often their greatest asset next to their family. Both are greatly impacted by air ducts and many problems resulting from poor air duct conditions affect the health and happiness of families.
Mold
Those with asthma fare worse when in a room with a mold infestation. All too often the mold can be traced back to air ducts.
Pests
No one likes to think of mice or bugs living in their homes. Whether one thinks about it or not they often take up residence. It takes only an eighth of an inch crack to allow these pests into a home. Most pests don't like human contact and hide quite well in a home's walls, floors, and air duct system. It's recommended that air conditioning units and furnaces by cleaned yearly, roofs and insulation be checked every few years and major appliances be cleaned and checked once a year or so. Air ducts should be seen no differently. Not only should they regularly be inspected in the spirit of good maintenance habits, but for other reasons as well. Saunders-Willard House
AKA, Founders Hall 827 West Franklin Street Built, 1883
January 2019
In the spring of 1919, the Richmond School of Social Work and Public Health faced growing pains. The Saunders-Willard House provided the answer.
December 2014 — Beers House — 1228 East Broad Street
The vestry of Monumental Church offered the school a "whole building" at 1228 East Broad Street, a three-story residence next door to the church and rent free. The offer was accepted.
Miss Catherine Harahan wrote in her reminiscences: "Anyone who attended school there could never forget it. The building had been renovated; it was clean and neat, but bare. In the basement were two large rooms for the recreational leadership department. On the second and third floors there were classrooms. The small library was on the first floor." [HRPI]
But there were issues.
[ORN] — Mayo Street, former red light district, later transformed into the new Fourteenth Street when Interstate 95 was built
Number 1228 East Broad Street had been built in the era when few houses had indoor bathrooms, and the ones which had these conveniences, often did not locate them in the house itself. Number 1228 was like this. The bathroom was in a separate little addition in the rear, across the porch, "which one had to cross to get there."
The 1228 location was then rather "slummy". The night students were the first to reject the 1228 East Broad Street area. They said they were afraid to go there. It was too close to the former "red light" district and also only a block, and a short block at that, from "Jail Alley", they complained.
The questions came to be asked: Wouldn't it be better to rent quarters in a better downtown neighborhood? And wouldn't the increased enrollment produce revenue to pay the rent? [HRPI]
[RVCJ93] — Saunders-Willard House — 827 West Franklin Street
On November 30, 1882, E. A. Saunders bought the site of his future mansion, now known as Founder’s Hall, for $7500.00 at a public auction of the estate of the deceased James B. Taylor. At that time, the land and frame house was put in the name of his wife, Mary J. Saunders. Their initials "E.A.S." still are etched in the glass transom over the main entrance door. The building suggests the home which Scarlett O'Hara and Rhett Butler of "Gone with the Wind" built in Atlanta about the same time.
(Rocket Werks RVA Postcards) — Shirley Plantation
Mr. and Mrs. Saunders had owned at least fifteen properties in and around Richmond. These estates included farms, plantations, and houses. The farming land that Saunders owned, which bordered the James River, included “Boscobel,” 450 acres; “Buckland,” 650 acres; “Shirley Plantation,” 800 acres; and “Weyanoke,” and some properties in Orange County close to Gordonsville.
[RVCJ93] — Edmund A. Saunders
E. A. Saunders was a successful entrepreneur and was involved in endeavors beyond the aforementioned grocery empire. For some time, Walker and E. A. Saunders were again business partners in a substantial milling industry. Saunders was a component of the tobacco manufacturing concern of Hardgrove, Pollard and Company as well as a part of the firm of E. A. Saunders and Company of New York, which dealt in the Cord-Wood and Lumber Association of Virginia. [TWVMFA]
(Wikipedia) — Joseph Edward Willard
After the Saunders family moved from the house, Number 827 was rented to the Honorable Joseph E. Willard when he served as lieutenant-governor of Virginia in 1902-06 and while he served on the State Corporation Commission in 1906-1910. Mr. Willard continued to live at the residence until about 1915, although after 1913 he was abroad much of the time as ambassador to Spain.
After Mr. Willard, Number 827 was occupied by the University Club of Richmond on a rental basis. In 1925 Franklin Street was chiefly residential, even though it was on the edge of the central section of Richmond and within walking distance of the business district. Many of the old houses still were occupied by members of the original families which built them. However, the Franklin-Shafer Street-Monroe Park neighborhood was changing. [HRPI]
The fates of the house and the School of Social Work began to align.
The question of finding a suitable, permanent location concerned officials and friends of the school for many months. Between 1922 and 1925, the minutes of the Board of Directors record many talks with President J. A. C. Chandler about "William and Mary taking over the school entirely."
President Chandler said that he would recommend to the Board of Visitors of the College of William and Mary the absorption of the school, with the understanding that William and Mary would maintain the institution permanently in Richmond "provided the school acquired a permanent building in a good central neighborhood."
More specifically, it was recommended that the Board of Directors acquire as a "permanent home of the school" the former Saunders-Willard house, on the southeast corner of Franklin and Shafer Streets.
There was some objection to the site as a permanent location for the school. One view held that it was too near the business section and "never could be made to look like a campus." This objection to location in the central part of the city, where no conventional campus was possible, continued through the years.
Two answers primarily were made to this question in 1925. First, it was felt that a good central location would result in an increase in the number of tuition-paying students and would also make possible higher tuition charges. The second answer was that the nature and purpose of the institution was the important factor. The kind of educational work contemplated for the new institution needed a central city location. A suburb or small town, while fine for a liberal arts college, was not a satisfactory setting for the kind of institution of higher education which emphasized the professions, vocations, occupations or "extension work".
Another factor in 1925 favoring the Franklin Street area was that the Richmond Public Library at 901 West Franklin was then located across from Shafer Street and available to students. In any case, the kind of neighborhood selected for the permanent location of the new institution was of great importance in the subsequent history of Richmond Professional Institute and of the emerging University. In ways, it is true that the selection of this permanent location for the new type of institution was one of the wisest decisions the founders made. [HRPI]
The house itself is composed of brick, two-and-one-half stories, mansard roof, three-bay front, molded deck, modillioned cornice, ornamental gables cap the dormers, corbelled chimney cap, stone hood molding cut with scrollwork, bay projections, Corinthian porch with latticework crowning balustrade and splayed newel posts, and door with segmental surround. Generally considered "Victorian" in style, as are most of the preserved 19th century homes on Franklin Street, Founders Hall is classified specifically as "French Second Empire" in the Epes and Nicholson study. The distinguishing feature according to them is the "mansard roof": "Decorative patterns of color or texture in the roofing materials." The appearance of the original structure is very attractive due to its first and second floor bay windows on the front and west sides; the variation in architectural patterns around the roof line, front porch and entry way; and its pleasing blend of red brick, gray stone and wood materials.
January 2019 — showing additions to the original building
The additions to the rear are constructed from red brick and concrete and are functional but unattractive. No attempt appears to have been made to integrate style and materials with the older part of the structure. The brickwork at the rear of the addition, however, is not uniform. The bricks at lower levels appear more worn and slightly larger than the bricks at higher levels. Also, the walls along the rear are not all the same height. Based on these observations, it seems that the additions could have been built on top of and beside existing brick structures that may have been associated with the original structure before 1925. Unfortunately, it’s also another victim of the insidious Tree-Architecture Conspiracy, but that’s the least of its problems. While it may be structurally sound, the exterior is in appalling condition. There’s peeling paint everywhere, mold on the newel posts leading to the front door and elsewhere, and a rats nest of cobwebs on the ceiling of the porch. On close inspection, it looks terrible — dirty, and in dire need of power washing.
VCU has done an amazing job transforming this area of the city and has built wonderful new additions to the Monroe Park campus. Their track record of stewardship for their older historic buildings doesn't always match this pattern of success. Considering what Founder’s Hall represents to the university, VCU should be embarrassed.
