The reason is simply that there are lots of stupid people out there who bid for no reason or argue the item didnt arrive or is not as described and this can be annoying as well as very time-consuming.

Don’t let this put you off though as it may have just been my experience but it’s not for me. However, if you are looking to get started with ways to make money at home then this is a good a place as any.

The best place to start making extra money online with eBay is to have a clear out around the house and get together all the stuff you are probably thinking of just throwing out.

Have a search around the site and see what other people have listed these types of items for. Once you have sold your stuff you can then reinvest that money by buying some packing products off the site and then look for stuff to buy and resell.

Look around at car boot sales and thrift stores to get your bargains and then relist at a profit on eBay, Don’t forget to add the cost of your eBay fees and Paypal fees into the equation. When I first started looking at how to make money online eBay was one of the first places I came to.

NEW CHROMEBOOK!!!

It’s a refurbished Acer R11, and now that I have it, I CAN WRITE AGAIN. Holy shit.

Like... My stated motto about Material Possessions is “easy come, easy go, easy come again.” It comes from being a thrift store/flea market/yard sale junkie. Because most of my stuff is, for all intents and purposes access-wise, one-of-a-kind. So losing it sucks. But most of it was somewhere between $0-$20, so there isn’t much sunk-cost angst if I lose it, even if there is significant NEVER GONNA GET ANOTHER ONE angst involved. But I also always know that, for the price of $0-$20, there’s a good chance that I’ll stumble upon the missing thing again, or at least something that makes me just as happy in the same ways, or maybe something even better.

The same thing applies to things I made myself. Sure, THAT span of labor is lost, but, since I’m somewhat proficient in multiple crafts, I’m basically a Good Shit Machine. I can’t make the same thing twice, but I can make something similar, and I can make something even better!

...And yeah, this does bleed over into things I bought new. In no small part because I can make or thrift something even cooler in the span of 1 day-6 months, depending on what it is and if I’m buying or making.

BUT.

If a writer finds her Expensive Writing Box stolen, THAT IS KIND OF A THING. I’m sure I could learn to construct a Chromebook-like device, but probably not as cheaply as I could construct, say, a piece of jewelry, a pair of knitted armwarmers, or some whimsically customized pants. Which is darkly hilarious, because I usually need to write in much shorter order than I need to interact with any specific object that I may or may not use.

ANYWAY.

NEW CHROMEBOOK.

It is sweet. It’s just slightly larger than my old one, which was just slightly too small. Writing this post tells me that the keyboard is excellent. I want to buy a skin for it, and then decorate it with the same kind of Steven Universe stickers I stuck on the last one. (I collected the dogtags they came with and still have some! Past tense because I haven’t seen them around in a while and they might not be doing those anymore.) Ooh, and I can also use the Lisa Frank ones I have a big book of because it was cheap with Amazon Prime!

...So I guess I’m going back to being the person loitering in the cafe/fast food place with the laptop covered in bright cartoony stickers, who people probably don’t assume is drinking jet-black coffee and writing hideous gore.

Sharing is caring! Most people say you need to do 27 different things to start a business, but I strongly disagree. Contrary to popular belief and some trendy articles you’ll find on the internet, let me tell you — you just need 2-3 fundamental things (or I say side hustle ideas) to start a business. No, wait, a side-business. Something you can start along with your day job. On the side. Working a few hours a week (weekends, weekdays, after-office, during commute — you decide.) And that side-business can consistently get you an ongoing stream of a second income. I’ve done it multiple times, and today I’ll show you exactly how you can do it too. The problem with the “high-dramatic-internet-social media” is that there is a ton of noise out there. You’ll find millions of blog posts and videos on startups, funding, investors, seed-round, etc. If you really dig deep, one of the strong reasons why Kulwant’s content connects strongly with his readers is because of his no-fluff, straight to the point approach, he doesn’t like to talk about all the noise, only the meat which matters. And the result of information overload and internet overdosage? Answer: Overwhelm. Confusion. “Uhhhh…maybe I’ll do this later” (which never comes btw.), and we simply vacillate on 100 thoughts then. There are hardly few materials on things like – How to start a side-business, step-by-step How to come up with profitable ideas, when you start as a newbie beginner (for eg: say you’re currently working at a job right now. You get up at 8, leave by 9, reach by 10, work till 7, and then home by 8pm. Now, how do you start something on the side? Like, what’s the FIRST thing you need to do right now? Why don’t people talk about that?) How to start a simple tiny-business which creates a second income stream for you What if out of the 1000 things out there, you only do 3 things (we’ll cover that) that gets you results. Think of it as a gym. You enter on day 1. Would you worry about losing 20 kgs first? NO! Initially, you would only focus on a few basics — cut down on certain food items, workout 3-4 times a week, get good sleep. Do this consistently for 6-8 weeks, and you’re going to LOOK GOOD! Once you hit the first milestone of losing a few kilos, now you are in the routine and can scale more. That’s exactly what we’ll be doing here. The Exact 3-Step Process to Earn a Second Income Let me give you the crux straightaway — here are the only 3 steps you need: Step 1: Find a few ideas (more on this below) Step 2: Validate them Step 3: Get your first 1-3 paying customers That’s it. There is no rocket science here. You don’t need to do an MBA. You don’t need to have extensive knowledge on this topic. Hell, you don’t even need to read 508 articles. Get the first key steps right to win your first customers, and you now have a solid functioning business. Think of all the things you can do with an extra 20K a month? Buy an additional pair of clothes? Pay for your petrol expenses? Splurge on new activities? Or just save more? Plus, you get the luxury of scaling that number, from 20K to 50K to even 1 lakh a month, to eventually quitting your day job. For eg: You start with getting 1 paying customer, but once you know how to get 1, you now know how to get the next 10 pretty quickly. I’ll also show you how I found a simple idea which gets me a regular stream of additional income, and also shows you how to come up with simple profitable ideas that can turn into a reliable side-income. Let us start with a simple technique to come up with profitable ideas. The YUS Technique to find 10 ideas in 15 minutes The best thing is, you don’t have to sit on your laptop for 50 hours, or go to networking events, or wait for “motivation” for ideas to fall down from the sky. With a simple technique that I am about to show you, you will be able to list down as good as 10 ideas in under 15 minutes. No over-analysis, no complex excel sheets, pivot tables, investor advice, etc. Just a simple pen and paper (and maybe some coffee?) is all you need, and we’re good to go. You ready? Ok, I’ll wait! Ready? Ok, here we go — I want you to write answers for each of the following below: 1. Experiences/Knowledge you’ve gained (like learning maths or geography, finance, or traveling by spending less) 2. Skills you’ve developed (like playing guitar, creating amazing excel reports, taking better photos, coding in java, or if dancing comes naturally to you ) 3. Challenges you’ve faced or overcome (going from a skinny to a perfect muscular body, writing and communicating smoothly, conduct meetings effectively) 4. Achievements you’ve been awarded for (maybe you got a promotion, or a high academic score, or won a competition, or attended multiple networking events, or bought a car from your own pocket) At this point, do not censor yourself with “What if my idea is not good?”, “There are already so many people doing it Zubin, I don’t have a chance!!”, “But, I don’t have enough time!”, etc. No really, avoid the analysis-paralysis syndrome. We will address each of those concerns, but that is all for later. Look, I know someone who consults C-level executives on their fashion style, or someone who does dog-training, or one of my friends who helps clients in their interior designing at houses. The point is, what looks “weird” to you, can be a huge problem to someone else which you can solve effortlessly, and they would be HAPPY to pay you for it. So do not start criticizing your ideas as of yet. I’ll show you simple exercises on how to eliminate some of those ideas, how to find the demand for your idea, validate it, etc. It’s good to get constructive feedback, but at this stage, we’re just brainstorming, research and validation come later. So, purely do a brain dump exercise here. List down as many possible answers to those 4 pointers above. I did the exact exercise with my readers, and the responses were AMAZING! I call this the YUS technique since I believe these are Yours. Unbeatable. Superpowers, something which is unique to you — experiences you have had, the life you’ve lived, people you’ve met, jobs you’ve done, thoughts you’ve had, and these things are very unique to you, and nobody else. Let’s try it. Take a piece of paper or open up notes on your mobile. And fill out what comes in your mind first thing for these questions: What are you knowledgeable about? What topics come to mind? What are some skills you’ve developed over the years What are some challenges/problems you had before, and not now? What have you been rewarded or appreciated for? How I found my Ideas Idea #1: Going through this exercise, one of the things which were a huge achievement for my career was my ability to fetch jobs and interview calls in my field of Industrial Engineering. With little research, testing and validation (something which I’ll share in detail in my future posts), I started Industrial Inside, a website to help industrial engineers in their career endeavors — from getting into dream universities, to create an attractive resume, to fetching interview calls, to finding their dream jobs. In September 2016, I launched my first online information product, which was a simple 3-hour video course on the same subject. That single launch alone made 75K in revenue and had 23 paying customers. Subsequently, that course gets me a regular additional income till date. Plus, I’ve been now able to expand into other areas, where I offer additional services — 1-1 resume consulting, SOP creation, job coaching, etc. All this started with a simple idea, the same place where you are today, I was at the exact place 3 years ago. A simple casual thought like “Hey, I went through this phase of getting my Master’s degree, and getting multiple jobs. I think I’m pretty good at this now. Why not start a side-business around this?” Never did I have a pinch of the idea that this might turn into something profitable. The day I got paying customers was itself a huge celebration and also a realization that you can turn almost anything into a side-business if: You have an idea…..that has demand You’ve gone out…and validated it You’ve found a channel to get……1-3 paying customers Idea #2 One of the things I’m deeply passionate about is writing. Of course, over the years with writing lots of content for other sites, my own site, email campaigns, etc. I got a good hang of making this a useful skill in my arsenal. So, the thought was why not turn it into a profitable second income. Back in 2018, I got about 5 paying clients for writing projects. (More on how to find paying clients in future posts.) Today, I occasionally take writing projects if I find it in my domain and good use of my time. More Real-life Examples In fact, I don’t want to leave you hanging by saying this works just for me. How to Validate Your Ideas It’s one thing to come up with a few ideas, and a whole another game to validate them. The last thing I want for you is you coming up with an idea, spend 3-6 months on it, and discover in the end that it will never make you any money. Waste of time. Waste of energy. Waste of expectations. Discouragement. Etc, etc. I’ll show you a few techniques to quickly and cheaply validate your ideas, but the important takeaway for you is — Validate first, only then proceed to the next step. Let’s say our idea is “graphic design”. Here are 2 ways to quickly validate your ideas: Technique 1 — Demand Check: Are there people out looking for these types of services? If there is no demand for your idea, you’re doomed for failure. In other words, let’s pick an idea where we know there is plenty of demand so we know for sure there is potential to make money. Here’s an easy method to check demand – Go to Upwork.com, and go to the Search Jobs option. Type in “graphic design”, and you will see plenty of results. This tells us that there is a demand for this idea. (We will further delve into niching down, positioning, etc.) You can also go to other places (aka fishing holes), for eg: Check if any facebook groups or other websites come up See if there are specific job postings on Linkedin or other job portals Have you ever seen anyone asking for help via word of mouth? These are clear signs there is an actual market for your idea. The takeaway here is to check for demand, go to places where people are ALREADY paying for these services. Technique 2 — Supply Check: Are there people out offering these types of services? Do you know people in your network (friends, family, colleagues) providing these services? For eg: I know many people offering pet grooming services, yet you will not find them on sites like Upwork or anywhere online. In that case, check if you know people who are offering such services. With “graphic design”, I know plenty of marketing agencies who need graphic design, so we’re pretty confident there is plenty of supply as well. Now, I know a lot of people will get scared thinking “There are already so many people out there already doing it”. The way I look at it is to say “Hey, there are people doing this, which validates my idea. With a little work, I can easily stand out and fetch my initial 1-3 customers” (I’ll also show you different ways to easily crush competition later, so don’t worry on this part.) Listen, like I said, we will tackle all of your Mental Scripts later, right not let’s only focus on what’s in front of us. Get a few ideas down on paper, use the techniques above to quickly validate them. This is the beautiful part about a step-by-step approach. It is very systematic. So, when you are listing down ideas, you are ONLY brainstorming it. You are not worried or thinking about validation, or getting clients. Or when you are validating it, and you find out that your idea does not have any demand, not a problem. You simply cross that off, go back to another idea and start with validation. You do not get frazzled or do things randomly. You take it one thing at a time, and that is it. What You Need to Know on Getting Started I did a simple google search the other day. I searched for “how many gms of protein do I need each day for muscle gain?” I got 1000000 results, each page providing me some insights. I liked some, disliked some, some had contradicting advice. 30 mins gone and I’m on page 6, still scrolling, hoping to find the magic answer or the right one. The final result? I’m still confused, have little insights, and no real clarity on my query. That’s the exact problem with almost any topic these days. With a ton of noise out there — who do you listen to? What advice is considered right or wrong? How will you ever know? The best way to deal with this is — focus on the fundamentals. To hell with complex advice and yet another “top 12 ways to do X”, let’s start simple and focus on the few key steps that matter. That moves the needle. That helps you win. Again, let’s review what those 3 steps are: Step 1: Find a few ideas (more on this below) Step 2: Validate them Step 3: Get your first 1-3 paying customers And don’t worry, we have also found tested ways to overcome the “But, I don’t have time” problem. One of the major differences between successful people and people who don’t succeed is that successful people know exactly what to focus on (especially when they’re getting started), and what activities will be simply a waste of time. Let me lay down a basic cheat sheet for you: What NOT to focus on: Business cards Facebook page Instagram account anything else which won’t help you achieve that first goal Instead, what if you could focus on a few things, like: Find 10 ideas: Use the technique above, and you should be easily able to list down 10 of them Niche it down to 1 idea Validate it: Again, this need not be complex. With a little lightweight testing, you will know for sure if your idea is worth pursuing and that people will actually pay for, or is it the one that has no potential of a business. I’ll share a few techniques on how to do this later Get your first 1-3 paying clients: Back in the day, this meant actually going out physically to find people, meet them, etc. A time-consuming activity. Now, with a few simple emails and techniques, you can easily get your first clients (more on this in future posts) Conclusion, and Specific Action Step for You: I think you’ll agree with me when I say: It’s not that tough to start a business once you have a step-by-step approach laid out in front of you. A step-by-step plan which shows you a roadmap to generate an extra 20K a month in the next 6-8 weeks. The irony is, I see 1000 articles on a plethora of things around starting a business, yet nobody talks about a really systematic way to start one. Hear this out — you need 3 basic things — finding an idea, refining and validating it, and then getting your first 1-3 paying customers. Let others talk about “facebook page likes”, or “Google ads!!!”, or any other complicated stuff — all that maybe is required, but not at this stage. Right now, get those 3 basic things correct, and congratulations, you now have a functioning tiny profitable business. And hey, 6 months down the road, you scale that up — get more customers, more revenue, more flexibility, and yes an option to quit your current job! The takeaway for you here is that it all starts with generating a few ideas. With the case study, examples and the YUS technique above, you should be able to get at least 5-10 ideas. Remember, we will talk about refining those ideas, validating, etc. but that is all for later. Right now, the simple exercise for you is to generate those ideas and get it down. So, the specific action step for you is to go through the YUS technique above, and list your 3-5 ideas below in the comments, and we can improve and further drill it down. Town by town, local journalism is dying in plain sight

WAYNESVILLE, Mo. — Five minutes late, Darrell Todd Maurina sweeps into a meeting room and plugs in his laptop computer. He places a Wi-Fi hotspot on the table and turns on a digital recorder. The earplug in his left ear is attached to a police scanner in his pants pocket.

He wears a tie; Maurina insists upon professionalism.

He is the press — in its entirety.

Maurina, who posts his work to Facebook, is the only person who has come to the Pulaski County courthouse to tell residents what their commissioners are up to, the only one who will report on their deliberations — specifically, their discussions about how to satisfy the Federal Emergency Management Agency so it will pay to repair a road inundated during a 2013 flood.

Last September, Waynesville became a statistic. With the shutdown of its newspaper, the Daily Guide, this town of 5,200 people in central Missouri’s Ozark hills joined more than 1,400 other cities and towns across the U.S. to lose a newspaper over the past 15 years, according to an Associated Press analysis of data compiled by the University of North Carolina.

Blame revenue siphoned by online competition, cost-cutting ownership, a death spiral in quality, sheer disinterest among readers or reasons peculiar to given locales for that development. While national outlets worry about a president who calls the press an enemy of the people, many Americans no longer have someone watching the city council for them, chronicling the soccer exploits of their children or reporting on the kindly neighbour who died of cancer.

Local journalism is dying in plain sight.

A rock outcropping painted by a local tattoo artist to resemble a frog greets visitors who follow the old Route 66 into Waynesville. Along with its sister city St. Robert, the military towns are dominated by the nearby Fort Leonard Wood, which has kept the county’s population steadily around 50,000 for the past decade.

Five of Waynesville’s eight city council members are former military, and Mayor Luge Hardman says the meetings run efficiently as a result.

“This is a small town where you can be from somewhere else and not feel like an outsider,” said Kevin Hillman, Pulaski County prosecuting attorney.

The Daily Guide, which traces to 1962, was a family owned paper into the 1980s before it was sold to a series of corporate owners that culminated with GateHouse Media Inc., the nation’s largest newspaper company. Five of the 10 largest media companies are owned by hedge funds or other investors with several unrelated holdings, and GateHouse is among them.

GateHouse and another company, Digital First Media, follow a strategy of aggressive cost-cutting without making significant investments in newsrooms, said Penelope Muse Abernathy, a University of North Carolina professor who studies news industry trends. But all newspaper owners face a brutal reality that calls into question whether it’s an economically sustainable model anymore unless, like the Jeff Bezos-owned Washington Post, the boss is the world’s richest man.

That’s especially true in smaller communities.

“They’re getting eaten away at every level,” said Ken Doctor, a news industry analyst at Harvard’s Nieman Lab.

Newspaper circulation in the U.S. has declined every year for three decades, while advertising revenue has nosedived since 2006, according to the Pew Research Center. Staffing at newspapers large and small has followed that grim trendline: Pew says the number of reporters, editors, photographers and other newsroom employees in the industry fell by 45 per cent nationwide between 2004 and 2017.

In the mid-1990s, when former Daily Guide publisher Tim Berrier was replaced, the newspaper had a news editor, sports editor, photographer and two reporters on staff. Along with traditional community news, the Daily Guide covered the Army’s decision to move its chemical warfare training facility to Fort Leonard Wood in the 1990s, and a flood that swept a mother and son to their deaths in 2013.

As recently as 2010, the Daily Guide had four full-time news people, along with a page designer and three ad salespeople.

But people left and weren’t replaced. Last spring, the Daily Guide was cut from five to three days a week. In June, the last newsroom staffer, editor Natalie Sanders, quit — she was burned out, she said. She made a bet with the only other full-time employee, ad sales person Tiffany Baker, over when the newspaper would close. Sanders said three years; Baker said one.

The last edition was published three months later, on Sept. 7.

“It felt like an old friend died,” Sanders said. “I sat and I cried, I really did. Because being the editor of the Daily Guide was all I wanted for a really long time.”

The death of the Daily Guide raises questions not easily answered, the same ones asked at newspapers big and small across the country.

Did GateHouse stop investing because people were less interested in reading the paper? Berrier said about 3,600 copies of the Daily Guide were printed in the mid-1990s. At the end, GateHouse was printing 675 copies a day.

Or did people lose interest because the lack of investment made it a less satisfying read?

“As the paper declined and got smaller and smaller, I felt that there wasn’t as much information that really made it worthwhile, so I did eventually stop” subscribing, said Keith Carnahan, senior pastor at Maranatha Baptist Church in St. Robert.

Berrier blames GateHouse, who he said “set the Daily Guide up to fail.” Others are less sure. Sanders, the former editor, and Joel Goodridge, another former publisher, blame both GateHouse and the community for not supporting the paper.

Goodridge said some businesses found they could advertise much more cheaply in free circulars dumped at local stores. He now works at a college in the nearby town of Rolla. His job at the Daily Guide was eliminated during the relentless downturn.

“When I first got into the newspaper business, it was intriguing, rewarding and I felt like I was doing something more than generating profits,” Goodridge said. “I felt like I was doing something for the community. As the years went by, it changed.”

GateHouse said the Daily Guide, like many smaller newspapers across the country, was hurt by a dwindling advertising market among national retailers. The paper supplemented its income through outside printing jobs, but those dried up, too, said Bernie Szachara, president of U.S. newspaper operations for GateHouse.

Given an unforgiving marketplace, there’s no guarantee additional investment in the paper would have paid off, he said. Szachara said the decision was made to include some news about Waynesville in a weekly advertising circular distributed around Pulaski County.

“We were trying not to create a ghost town,” he said.

Residents of Waynesville are coming to grips with what is missing in their lives.

“Losing a newspaper,” said Keith Pritchard, 63, chairman of the board at the Security Bank of Pulaski County and a lifelong resident, “is like losing the heartbeat of a town.”

Pritchard has scrapbooks of news clippings about his three daughters; Katie was a basketball player of some renown at Drury University. He wonders: How will young families collect such memories?

The local state representative, Steve Lynch, would routinely cut out a story about people recognized in the paper, add a personal note, laminate it and send it to them — a savvy goodwill exercise.

Historians worry about what is lost to future generations. Many of the displays in a small museum of local history in St. Robert are stories retrieved from newspapers.

Residents talk with dismay about church picnics or school plays they might have attended but only learn of through Facebook postings after the fact.

“I miss the newspaper, the chance to sit down over a cup of coffee and a bagel or a doughnut … and find out what’s going on in the community,” said Bill Slabaugh, a retiree. Now he talks to friends and “candidly, for the most part, I’m ignorant.”

Slabaugh acknowledges some complicity in the Daily Guide’s demise. He said he angrily stopped buying the paper when it wrote about a drag show at a local community centre.

Beyond the emotions are practical concerns about the loss of an information source. The bank routinely checked the Daily Guide’s obituaries to protect against fraud; Pritchard said you’d be surprised by family members who try to clean out the accounts of a recently-deceased relative.

At a time when journalists and police are often at odds, it’s somewhat startling to hear local law enforcement unanimously express dismay at the loss of a newspaper.

Like many communities, Waynesville is struggling with a drug problem. The nearby interstate is an easy supply line for opioids and meth, police say. The four murders in Waynesville last year were the most in memory, and all were drug-related.

For painful, personal reasons, Pulaski County Sheriff Jimmy Bench wishes the Daily Guide was there to report on the December death of his 31-year-old son, Ryan, due to a heroin overdose. It would have been better than dealing with whispers and Twitter.

“Social media is so cruel sometimes,” Bench said.

Without a newspaper’s reporting, Police Chief Dan Cordova said many in the community are unaware of the extent of the problem. Useful information, like a spate of robberies in one section of town, goes unreported. Social media is a resource, but Cordova is concerned about not reaching everyone.

Local authorities still write news releases and, in the final days of the Daily Guide, the overworked staff often printed them verbatim — even giving front-page bylines to the marketing director for the Waynesville School District.

“I thought it was great,” said Waynesville School Superintendent Brian Henry, later adding: “Nobody’s really stepped in and filled exactly what we had with our newspaper.”

Posting press releases to official Facebook pages isn’t quite the same. County coroner Nick Pappas said readers are more suspicious of news releases than they would be of a fully reported news story.

“I’m not going to put out anything critical of myself out there,” said Hillman, the prosecuting attorney who just started his third term in the elective office. “I mean, that’s the truth. What politician is?”

This isn’t a hopeless story.

Dotted across the country are exceptions to the brutal new rule, newspapers that are surviving with creative business plans. In North Carolina’s Moore County, owners support the 100-year-old Pilot with revenue raised by side businesses — lifestyle magazines, electronic newsletters, telephone directories, a video production company and a bookstore.

Philanthropy is supporting other efforts to fill gaps created by journalism’s business struggles. Report for America, which sees itself as a Peace Corps for journalists, has sent young reporters into communities in Mississippi, Texas and elsewhere. It has relationships with newsrooms across the country, including The Associated Press. The American Journalism Project is raising money to fund local news, and recently announced $42 million in pledges.

What this effort means for Waynesville, and many small towns like it, remains to be seen.

It briefly had an alternative after the Daily Guide folded. A local businessman, Louie Keen, bankrolled a newspaper, the Uranus Examiner, that was delivered for free. The paper had some journalistic spunk, revealing that the Waynesville mayor had blocked some residents from seeing her postings on the city’s Facebook site. Mayor Hardman said it was inadvertent and quickly corrected.

The paper lasted five issues. Named for the tourist complex Keen owns, he said the Uranus Examiner was shunned by local advertisers because he used to own a strip club and uses sophomoric jokes to promote his businesses.

So Waynesville and St. Robert are left with Darrell Todd Maurina’s Facebook site, which he calls the Pulaski County Daily News.

A former Army civilian public affairs officer who worked at the Daily Guide in the 2000s, Maurina posts live from community meetings, reports on accidents on the nearby interstate and publishes obituaries. It’s meat-and-potatoes local news.

When he’s not at meetings, he works from a windowless office in the basement of his home. Court documents and papers are piled on the floor and coffee table near a police radio scanner, fax machine and television. On his desk are a well-worn Bible, small American flag and a signed photograph of President Gerald Ford thanking Maurina’s father for his support.

Maurina typically is awake before 5 a.m. to check the local radio station, if the scanner hasn’t roused him earlier.

“I really believe that as large newspaper chains cut staff of small newspapers, and small newspapers wither and die, that’s going to cause major problems in communities,” he said. “Somebody needs to pick up the slack and, at least in this community, I’m able to do that.”

Maurina’s efforts have some support, even from the city councilman who said he once threatened to throw Maurina out a window over a disagreement about a story.

“He’s an equal opportunity agitator,” said Ed Conley, another council member. “He tries to be fair, and to be honest about it, he does a good job, but he’s just one person and he’s limited by social media.”

Maurina declines to share many details about the finances for his online site. He also acknowledges some holes in his coverage, especially of sports.

For local athletics, some people turn instead to a Facebook site run by Allen Hilliard, a former Daily Guide stringer and school bus driver who has been posting photos, videos and newsletters about local youth and high school teams. Hilliard isn’t making much money from his time-consuming hobby, but like Maurina, he takes pride in providing a community service.

“If I quit doing it, then essentially there would be no (sports) coverage of anyone,” he said.

Maurina says he knows journalists need to go back to the basics to survive –or revive — in small-town America.

“We need to go back to what was done in the late 1800s — being everywhere at every event, telling everyone what the sirens were about last night,” he said.

Good idea. Who’s going to pay for it?
