What are Special Purpose Machines, Different Types and Applications?
The 21st century saw a drastic change in the production of highly sophisticated equipment. But these equipment have a tremendous scope at an overall lesser cost of production. SPM machines are highly customized machines with specialized tooling and fixtures. SPM machines are specifically designed with exact requirements to be processed or machined. These machines have the potential to perform what other machines can’t. These machines are producing mass component day in and day out. These machines have a mix of switches, sensors, logic controls and automatic job essence to work together in a Special purpose machine. The SPMs are suitable for mass production of components where the production involves operations like turning, boring, facing, drilling, taping, champering, etc.
Why do we use Special purpose Machines?
Automated Production techniques are widely used as a part of manufacturing industries because of different issues:
• These machines help us in avoiding the high cost of labor • With a shortage of skilled people, special purpose machine are an effective solution. • Safety of employees which is an integral step • It is a cost-effective solution with the increase in the cost of raw materials. • Better quality and faster production help in creating special purpose machines as an obvious choice.
There are 2 main layouts of SPMs i.e. Single Station and Multi-Station
As a single station, the workplace is at a fixed position where machining and sliding components in opposite directions so as to process from different directions On the Other hand, multiple machine units process simultaneously or in a sequencing order depending on the geometry of the workpiece and machining features. The other different layouts are transfer machine, rotary machine, inline operation.
Various Types of SPM
1. SPM for Metal Cutting 2. Special Purpose CNC Machine 3. Special Purpose Machine fora vertical turning machine 4. Rotary Indexing Drilling and Tapping Machine 5. SPM for multi and simultaneous operations like drilling etc.
Application of SPM Machines: Some of the major platforms can be massively used at OEMs and machine shops facilities:
OEMs The original equipment manufacturers include automotive, aerospace, and defense sectors. They are the utmost high-end users of special purpose machines. OEMs also prefer to undertake complex and important machining operations, such as in-house precision machining. These machines ensure quality and thus end up with advanced finished products.
Machine Shops These shops usually manufacture small and medium-sized components. OEMs outsource less complex manufacturing machine such shops so that they can focus on the innovation of new products. These machines can adopt special purpose machinery as an important adjutant. Invensys engineers are one of the best suppliers of special purpose machines. They have a wide variety of equipment which can be customized accordingly. Different machines which Invensys engineers produce are Automatic spring setting machine, serve hydraulic piercing machine. Also customized cigarette aligner systems for ITC limited are one of the highly productive machines on our list. Other products include automatic assembly machine, bag printing sliding table. It is one of the leading manufacturers and suppliers of special purpose machines. The business operations are led by experienced management and meeting client requirements.

Through the Corinth Canal - to the western side of Greece ...
July 11th ...
To reach the Ionian Sea on the Western side of Greece required us to travel up to Corinth from the Cyclades and pass through the Corinth Canal. On our way to Corinth we made a series of stops spending a night on Serifos, then Kifnos, before crossing to the island of Aegina ( which is close to the mainland), and then finally through the Corinth Canal.
Anchoring out from the port of Serifos.
Serifos had an unusual feel to it. We couldn’t quite put our finger on it, but we felt it was a forgotten, despairing place with a hilltop town that was steep, rugged and quite uninviting. The port was extremely windy, which made for a blustery old night. We left early the next morning and headed for Kifnos where we spent a few hours at a unique little bay, which had a sandy isthmus running between the headland and its rocky coastlline. It was a charming, quiet ilittle island which is known for producing good wine. We purchased a few bottles before leaving the next morning.
The quiet town, and bay at Kifnos
After a three hour journey the next day, we parked up in the main port on Aegina, and restocked the boat etc. It is one of those cosmopolitan islands that is very close to Athens and therefore quite populated.
Many of the ochre coloured houses are crumbling away, with some of the bigger homes in the port boarded up, their old balconies and wrought iron balustrades looking precariously fragile. Unloved, and forgotten. The port however was busy and it was a lively place to spend the night, but we were pleased to be heading off in the morning.
We found a fabulous fish market in Aegina and bought our lunch - sardines.
An hour after leaving Aegina we reached Corinth. The Canal slices a 6.5 kilometer waterway straight through the narrowest isthmus at Corinth, separating mainland Greece from the Peloponnese and allows for a direct passage through to the Ionian Sea, cutting hundreds of miles off the journey around the bottom of the Peloponnese. It is only 25 meters wide so is limiting for large modern ships, which diminishes the economical benefits it once had. I have driven over this canal dozens of times, but have never traveled through it. So I was feeling really excited when we were given the all clear to set off. It’s a one-way canal, so boats wait at each end for their turn. We timed it perfectly and were chugging slowly along in no time.
What an amazing experience. Looking up from the bow of Awanui, I could see the grooved stone sides of the canal, with deep ragged marks made by the cutting tools slicing down through the earth to the sea below. You get a feeling of what an enormous task it was in the making. It was executed in the late 19th century, but dreamed about by many rulers for thousands of years. Before the canal was built the ships would be rolled across the land from either side on huge tree trunks. Thanks to the manpower of hundreds of slaves, pulling with ropes, and placing the logs from behind and putting them in front, so the ships could move laboriously along.
Looking back from whence we’d come, once through to the other side.
We were making our way to Nafpaktos to pick up Rebecca and three of her lovely friends, plus the Binnings, John and Gaybrielle. I felt a bit guilty that we hadn’t had them with us to experience this, but we figured they would want to get straight out to the Islands when they arrived in Greece, and there was still a couple of nights of travel ahead of us to pass along the Gulf of Corinth, once through the canal, before reaching the Ionian Sea.
After a stop for a swim, and lunch, we arrived at the town of Itea. It was perfect for cycling around, although a bit dull, but very close to Delphi so we made plans for the next morning.
Delphi - This ancient wall is thousands of years old supporting the temple of Apollo.
The treasury of Athens at Delphi. The wealth of Greece was held here in various treasuries.
Chris and I took a short twenry minute taxi ride up through a valley of two million olive trees to reach the Oracle of Delphi. We were pleased to have left early, as it wasn’t too hot at 8.00 am, and there were very few people there when we arrived. We wandered around this ancient site and made our way up through the ruins to reach the highest point, where the sports arena is. You get a magnificent view down over the valley and can glimpse a bit of the aqueduct that was only built recently in the 1970’s to carry water from the snowy mountains of Parnassus, 300 kilometers to the city of Athens.
The ancient theatre. Half way up.
The view over the theatre down the valley.
The Oracle was revered by the Ancient Greeks as the site of the Omphales stone (the Naval), and hence the center of the world, and of the universe. According to mythology, Zeus sent two golden eagles to fly around the world in opposite directions, and where they met he hurled the navel stone from the heavens. It landed in Delphi and hence became the center of the world, and the site of the Oracle. It is the most important place in classical Greek history, and a major site for the worship of the god Apollo. It is where priests, and priestesses, would give advice to questions posed to them – often their utterances were extremely ambiguous and obscure. Leading to all sorts of trouble and misinterpretations !
The infamous Omphales stone - the Navel - The centre of the earth!!
Delphi is well worth visiting if you are ever near by – and go early, as just as we were making our way back down to the Museum, about four bus loads of tourists arrived in the 35 degree heat that had enveloped us. We were gad to have had a peaceful time walking around the Oracle.
The sports arena at the top of Delphi. And below.
The Ancient Greeks were big on athletic competition - hence the Olympics!
As soon as we returned to the boat we were off. The heat was becoming intense, and it was time for a swim! We stopped at Trezonia and cooled off, before traveling on to the fortified port of Nafpaktos. This was an absolute gem of a place. We hadn’t expected it to be so beautiful, as we were still in the Gulf of Corinth. We’d organized a driver and van to pick up our guests from the airport in Athens, and drive the three hours to Nafpaktos.
Captain Kosta knew exactly where he wanted the boat – and it involved dropping the bow anchor outside the entrance of the port and backing into a platform at the base of some wide stone steps, right inside this tiny harbour. We were literally the center of attraction!
Backing into the tiny harbour of Nafpaktos.
Our berth awaits ...Hesham ready with the stern lines.
Ahhh - tied up securely in the middle of the port.
Ready and waiting for the new arrivals...
The next day the girls, (Rebecca, Nikita, Lucy and Emily) plus Gaybrielle and John arrived amidst a flurry of excitement and jet lag. We were so happy to see them all, and had a fabulous night in Nafpactos at a charming taverna, catching up on all their news.
And here they are ..The only photo I have of the arrival.
Crack open the champers... we were so excited to have our new team on board!
Les gals - Nikita, Moi, Rebecca, Lucy, Emily and Gaybrielle. On our way to dinner.
View of the boat that night.
And so began a couple of fun filled fabulous weeks, as we headed out to the Ionian sea and to the islands of Ithica, Cephalonia, Paxos, and Anti Paxos. So much more to tell…….so will be continued…..!
The next morning, heading out of the Gulf of Corinth under the Iron-Antirion bridge, and into the ionian Sea.......FUN!

Teen Depression and Anxiety: Why the Kids Are Not Alright

• Academics and pressure likely the cause of teen self-harm.
The first time Faith-Ann Bishop cut herself, she was in eighth grade. It was 2 in the morning, and as her parents slept, she sat on the edge of the tub at her home outside Bangor, Maine, with a metal clip from a pen in her hand. Then she sliced into the soft skin near her ribs. There was blood–and a sense of deep relief. “It makes the world very quiet for a few seconds,” says Faith-Ann. “For a while I didn’t want to stop, because it was my only coping mechanism. I hadn’t learned any other way.”
The pain of the superficial wound was a momentary escape from the anxiety she was fighting constantly, about grades, about her future, about relationships, about everything. Many days she felt ill before school. Sometimes she’d throw up, other times she’d stay home. “It was like asking me to climb Mount Everest in high heels,” she says.
It would be three years before Faith-Ann, now 20 and a film student in Los Angeles, told her parents about the depth of her distress. She hid the marks on her torso and arms, and hid the sadness she couldn’t explain and didn’t feel was justified. On paper, she had a good life. She loved her parents and knew they’d be supportive if she asked for help. She just couldn’t bear seeing the worry on their faces.
For Faith-Ann, cutting was a secret, compulsive manifestation of the depression and anxiety that she and millions of teenagers in the U.S. are struggling with. Self-harm, which some experts say is on the rise, is perhaps the most disturbing symptom of a broader psychological problem: a spectrum of angst that plagues 21st century teens.
Adolescents today have a reputation for being more fragile, less resilient and more overwhelmed than their parents were when they were growing up. Sometimes they’re called spoiled or coddled or helicoptered. But a closer look paints a far more heartbreaking portrait of why young people are suffering. Anxiety and depression in high school kids have been on the rise since 2012 after several years of stability. It’s a phenomenon that cuts across all demographics–suburban, urban and rural; those who are college bound and those who aren’t. Family financial stress can exacerbate these issues, and studies show that girls are more at risk than boys.
In 2015, about 3 million teens ages 12 to 17 had had at least one major depressive episode in the past year, according to the Department of Health and Human Services. More than 2 million report experiencing depression that impairs their daily function. About 30% of girls and 20% of boys–totaling 6.3 million teens–have had an anxiety disorder, according to data from the National Institute of Mental Health. Experts suspect that these statistics are on the low end of what’s really happening, since many people do not seek help for anxiety and depression. A 2015 report from the Child Mind Institute found that only about 20% of young people with a diagnosable anxiety disorder get treatment. It’s also hard to quantify behaviors related to depression and anxiety, like nonsuicidal self-harm, because they are deliberately secretive.
Still, the number of distressed young people is on the rise, experts say, and they are trying to figure out how best to help. Teen minds have always craved stimulation, and their emotional reactions are by nature urgent and sometimes debilitating. The biggest variable, then, is the climate in which teens navigate this stage of development.
They are the post-9/11 generation, raised in an era of economic and national insecurity. They’ve never known a time when terrorism and school shootings weren’t the norm. They grew up watching their parents weather a severe recession, and, perhaps most important, they hit puberty at a time when technology and social media were transforming society. “If you wanted to create an environment to churn out really angsty people, we’ve done it,” says Janis Whitlock, director of the Cornell Research Program on Self-Injury and Recovery. Sure, parental micromanaging can be a factor, as can school stress, but Whitlock doesn’t think those things are the main drivers of this epidemic. “It’s that they’re in a cauldron of stimulus they can’t get away from, or don’t want to get away from, or don’t know how to get away from,” she says.
In my dozens of conversations with teens, parents, clinicians and school counselors across the country, there was a pervasive sense that being a teenager today is a draining full-time job that includes doing schoolwork, managing a social-media identity and fretting about career, climate change, sexism, racism–you name it. Every fight or slight is documented online for hours or days after the incident. It’s exhausting. “We’re the first generation that cannot escape our problems at all,” says Faith-Ann. “We’re all like little volcanoes. We’re getting this constant pressure, from our phones, from our relationships, from the way things are today.”
Steve Schneider, a counselor at Sheboygan South High School in southeastern Wisconsin, says the situation is like a scab that’s constantly being picked. “At no point do you get to remove yourself from it and get perspective,” he says.
It’s hard for many adults to understand how much of teenagers’ emotional life is lived within the small screens on their phones, but a CNN special report in 2015 conducted with researchers at the University of California, Davis, and the University of Texas at Dallas examined the social-media use of more than 200 13-year-olds. Their analysis found that “there is no firm line between their real and online worlds,” according to the researchers.
Phoebe Gariepy, a 17-year-old in Arundel, Maine, describes following on Instagram a girl in Los Angeles whom she’d never met because she liked the photos she posted. Then the girl stopped posting. Phoebe later heard she’d been kidnapped and was found on the side of a road, dead. “I started bawling, and I didn’t even know this girl,” says Phoebe. “I felt really extremely connected to that situation even though it was in L.A.” That hyperconnectedness now extends everywhere, engulfing even rural teens in a national thicket of Internet drama. Daniel Champer, the director of school-based services for Intermountain in Helena, Mont., says the one word he’d use to describe the kids in his state is overexposed. Montana’s kids may be in a big, sparsely populated state, but they are not isolated anymore. A suicide might happen on the other side of the state and the kids often know before the adults, says Champer. This makes it hard for counselors to help. And nearly 30% of the state’s teens said they felt sad and hopeless almost every day for at least two weeks in a row, according to the 2015 Montana Youth Risk Behavior Survey. To address what they consider a cry for help from the state’s teens, officials in Montana are working on expanding access to school-based and tele-based counseling.
Megan Moreno, head of social media and adolescent health research at Seattle Children’s Hospital, notes a big difference between the mobile-social-tech revolution of the past 15 years and things like the introduction of the telephone or TV. In the olden days, your mom told you to get off the family phone or turn off the TV, and you did it. This time, kids are in the driver’s seat. Parents are also mimicking teen behavior. “Not in all cases, obviously, but in many cases the adults are learning to use their phones in the way that the teens do,” says Moreno. “They’re zoning out. They’re ignoring people. They’re answering calls during dinner rather than saying, ‘O.K., we have this technology. Here are the rules about when we use it.’”
She cautions against demonizing technology entirely. “I often tell parents my simplest analogy is it’s like a hammer. You know, you can build a house that’s never existed before and you can smash someone’s head in, and it’s the same tool.” Sometimes phones rob teens’ developing brains of essential downtime. But other times they’re a way to maintain healthy social connections and get support.
Nora Carden, 17, of Brooklyn, who started college in upstate New York this fall, says she’s relieved when she goes on a trip that requires her to leave her phone for a while. “It’s like the whole school is in your bag, waiting for an answer,” she says.
School pressures also play a role, particularly with stress. Nora got counseling for her anxiety, which became crushing as the college-application process ramped up. She’d fear getting an answer wrong when a teacher called on her, and often felt she was not qualified to be in a particular class. “I don’t have pressure from my parents. I’m the one putting pressure on myself,” she says. “The competitiveness, the lack of clarity about where things are going [economically] have all created a sense of real stress,” says Victor Schwartz of the Jed Foundation, a nonprofit that works with colleges and universities on mental-health programs and services. “Ten years ago, the most prominent thing kids talked about was feeling depressed. And now anxiety has overtaken that in the last couple of years.”
Tommy La Guardia, a high-achieving 18-year-old senior in Kent, Wash., is the first college-bound kid in his family. He recently became a finalist for prestigious scholarships, all while working 10 to 15 hours a week at a Microsoft internship and helping to care for his younger brothers. His mom, Catherine Moimoi, says he doesn’t talk about the pressure he’s under. They don’t have a lot of resources, yet he manages everything himself, including college tours and applications. “He’s a good kid. He never complains,” she says. “But there are many nights I go to sleep wondering how he does it.”
Tommy admits that the past year was tough. “It’s hard to describe the stress,” he says. “I’m calm on the outside, but inside it’s like a demon in your stomach trying to consume you.” He deals with those emotions on his own. “I don’t want to make it someone else’s problem.” Alison Heyland, 18, a recent high school graduate, was part of a group in Maine called Project Aware, whose members seek to help their peers manage anxiety and depression by making films. “We’re such a fragile and emotional generation,” she says. “It’s tempting for parents to tell kids, ‘Just suck it up.’” But, says Alison, “I feel like it really is less realistic for you to go after your dream job today. You’re more apt to go do a job that you don’t really like because it pays better and you’ll be in less debt.”
Meanwhile, evidence suggests the anxiety wrought by school pressures and technology is affecting younger and younger kids. Ellen Chance, co-president of the Palm Beach School Counselor Association, says technology and online bullying are affecting kids as early as fifth grade. The strain on school counselors has increased since No Child Left Behind standardized testing protocols were implemented in the past decade. Tests can run from January through May, and since counselors in Chance’s county are often the ones who administer the exams, they have less time to deal with students’ mental-health issues.
“I couldn’t tell you how many students are being malicious to each other over Instagram or Snapchat,” she says of the elementary school where she’s the sole counselor for more than 500 kids. “I’ve had cases where girls don’t want to come to school because they feel outcasted and targeted. I deal with it on a weekly basis.”
Conventional wisdom says kids today are oversupervised, prompting some parenting critics to look back fondly to the days of latchkey kids. But now, even though teens may be in the same room with their parents, they might also, thanks to their phones, be immersed in a painful emotional tangle with dozens of their classmates. Or they’re looking at other people’s lives on Instagram and feeling self-loathing (or worse). Or they’re caught up in a discussion about suicide with a bunch of people on the other side of the country they’ve never even met via an app that most adults have never heard of.
Phoebe Gariepy says she remembers being in the backseat of a car with her headphones on, sitting next to her mom while looking at disturbing photos on her phone on social-media feeds about cutting. “I was so distant, I was so separated,” she says. She says it was hard to get out of that online community, as gory as it was, because her online life felt like her real life. “It’s almost like a reality-TV show. That’s the most triggering part of it, knowing that those real people were out there.” It would be hard for most people to know that the girl sitting there scrolling through her phone was engaged in much more than superficial selfies. Josh, who did not want his real name published, is a high school sophomore in Maine who says he remembers how his parents began checking on him after the Sandy Hook shooting that killed 20 children and six adults. Despite their vigilance, he says, they’re largely unaware of the pain he’s been in. “They’re both heterosexual cis people, so they wouldn’t know that I’m bisexual. They wouldn’t know that I cut, that I use red wine, that I’ve attempted suicide,” he says. “They think I’m a normal kid, but I’m not.” In the CNN study, researchers found that even when parents try their best to monitor their children’s Instagram, Twitter and Facebook feeds, they are likely unable to recognize the subtle slights and social exclusions that cause kids pain.
Finding disturbing things in a child’s digital identity, or that they’re self-harming, can stun some parents. “Every single week we have a girl who comes to the ER after some social-media rumor or incident has upset her [and then she cut herself],” says Fadi Haddad, a psychiatrist who helped start the child and adolescent psychiatric emergency department at Bellevue hospital in New York City, the first of its kind at a public hospital. Teens who end up there are often sent by administrators at their school. When Haddad calls the parents, they can be unaware of just how distressed their child is. According to Haddad, this includes parents who feel they’re very involved in their children’s lives: they’re at every sports game, they supervise the homework, they’re part of the school community.
Sometimes when he calls, they’re angry. One mother whose child Haddad treated told him that she found out her daughter had 17 Facebook accounts, which the mother shut down. “But what good does that do?” says Haddad. “There will be an 18th.”
For some parents who discover, as Faith-Ann’s parents Bret and Tammy Bishop did a few years ago, that their child has been severely depressed, anxiety-ridden or self-harming for years, it’s a shock laden with guilt. Bret says Faith-Ann had been making cuts on her legs and ribs for three years before she got the courage to tell her parents. “You wonder, What could I have done better?” he says. Looking back, he realizes that he was distracted too much of the time.
“Even for us as adults, you’re never away from work now. Before, there wasn’t anything to worry about till I got back on Monday. But now it’s always on your phone. Sometimes when you’re home, you’re not home,” Bret says. When Bret and Tammy joined a group for parents of kids with depression, he discovered that there were many girls and some boys who were also depressed and hurting themselves, and that few parents had any idea of what was going on.
Tammy said she wishes she’d followed her gut and taken Faith-Ann for counseling earlier. “I knew something was wrong, and I couldn’t figure it out,” she says.
Self-harm is certainly not universal among kids with depression and anxiety, but it does appear to be the signature symptom of this generation’s mental-health difficulties. All of the nearly two dozen teens I spoke with for this story knew someone who had engaged in self-harm or had done it themselves. It’s hard to quantify the behavior, but its impact is easier to monitor: a Seattle Children’s Hospital study that tracked hashtags people use on Instagram to talk about self-harm found a dramatic increase in their use in the past two years. Researchers got 1.7 million search results for “#selfharmmm” in 2014; by 2015 the number was more than 2.4 million.
While girls appear more likely to engage in this behavior, boys are not immune: as many as 30% to 40% of those who’ve ever self-injured are male. The academic study of this behavior is nascent, but researchers are developing a deeper understanding of how physical pain may relieve the psychological pain of some people who practice it. That knowledge may help experts better understand why it can be hard for some people to stop self-harming once they start. Whitlock, the director of the self-injury research program at Cornell, explains that studies are pretty consistent in showing that people who injure themselves do it to cope with anxiety or depression. It’s hard to know why self-harm has surfaced at this time, and it’s possible we’re just more aware of it now because we live in a world where we’re more aware of everything. Whitlock thinks there’s a cultural element to it. Starting in the late 1990s, the body became a kind of billboard for self-expression–that’s when tattoos and piercings went mainstream. “As that was starting to happen, the idea of etching your emotional pain into your body was not a big step from the body as a canvas as an idea,” she says.
The idea that self-harm is tied to how we see the human body tracks with what many teens told me when I interviewed them. As Faith-Ann describes it, “A lot of value is put on our physical beauty now. All of our friends are Photoshopping their own photos–it’s hard to escape that need to be perfect.” Before the dawn of social media, the disorders that seemed to be the quintessential reflection of those same societal pressures were anorexia or bulimia–which are still serious concerns.
Whitlock says there are two common experiences that people have with self-harm. There are those who feel disconnected or numb. “They don’t feel real, and there’s something about pain and blood that brings them into their body,” she says.
On the other end of the spectrum are people who feel an overwhelming amount of emotion, says Whitlock. “If you asked them to describe those emotions on a scale of 1 to 10, they would say 10, while you or I might rate the same experience as a 6 or 7. They need to discharge those feelings somehow, and injury becomes their way,” she explains. The research on what happens in the brain and body when someone cuts is still emerging. Scientists want to better understand how self-harm engages the endogenous opioid system–which is involved in the pain response in the brain–and what happens if and when it does. Some of the treatments for self-harm are similar to those for addiction, particularly in the focus on identifying underlying psychological issues–what’s causing the anxiety and depression in the first place–and then teaching healthy ways to cope. Similarly, those who want to stop need a strong level of internal motivation. “You’re not going to stop for somebody else,” explains Phoebe, the teenager from Maine. Even thinking about how upset her mother was about the self-harm wasn’t enough. “I tried making pacts with friends. But it doesn’t work. You have to figure it out for yourself. You have to make the choice.” Eventually, Phoebe steered herself out of the dark, destructive corners of the Internet that reinforced her habit by romanticizing and validating her pain. She’s now into holistic healing and looks at positive sites populated by people she calls “happy hippies.”
Faith-Ann remembers the day her mother Tammy noticed the scars on her arms and realized what they were. By then she was a junior in high school. “I normally cut in places you couldn’t see, but I had messed up and I had a cut on my wrists. I lifted my arm to move my hair, and she saw it. It was scary because the cuts were in a place that people associate with suicide.” That was not what she was attempting, however. “If she’d asked me before that if I was cutting, I would have said no. I wouldn’t have wanted to put that pain on her,” says Faith-Ann. But that night she said, “Yes, I am cutting, and I want to stop.” Tammy cried for a bit, but they moved on. She didn’t ask why, she didn’t freak out, she just asked what she could do to help. “That was the exact right thing to do,” says Faith-Ann. The family got counseling after that. Her parents learned that they weren’t alone. And Faith-Ann learned breathing techniques to calm herself physically and how to talk to herself positively. Recovery didn’t happen all at once. There were relapses, sometimes over tiny things. But the Bishops were on the right road.
One of the most powerful things Faith-Ann did to escape the cycle of anxiety, depression and self-harm was to channel her feelings into something creative. As part of the Project Aware teen program in Maine, she wrote and directed a short film about anxiety and depression in teens called The Road Back. More than 30 kids worked on the project, and they became a support system for one another as she continued to heal.
“I had a place where I could be open and talk about my life and the issues I was having, and then I could project them in an artistic way,” she says. Bellevue’s Fadi Haddad says that for parents who find out their children are depressed or hurting themselves, the best response is first to validate their feelings. Don’t get angry or talk about taking away their computers. “Say, 'I’m sorry you’re in pain. I’m here for you,’” he says.
This straightforward acknowledgment of their struggles takes away any judgment, which is critical since mental-health issues are still heavily stigmatized. No adolescent wants to be seen as flawed or vulnerable, and for parents, the idea that their child has debilitating depression or anxiety or is self-harming can feel like a failure on their part.
Alison Heyland’s dad Neil says that initially, it was hard to find people to confide in about his daughter’s depression. “I see everyone putting up posts about their family, they look so happy and everyone’s smiling, everything is so perfect and rosy. I kind of feel less than,” he says. For both generations, admitting that they need help can be daunting. Even once they get past that barrier, the cost and logistics of therapy can be overwhelming.
Faith-Ann still struggles at times with depression and anxiety. “It’s a condition that’s not going to totally disappear from my life,” she says over the phone from Los Angeles, where she’s thriving at film school. “It’s just learning how to deal in a healthy way–not self-harming, not lashing out at people.” Of course Bret and Tammy Bishop still worry about her. They now live in Hampstead, N.C., and at first Bret didn’t like the idea of Faith-Ann’s going to school in California. If she was having trouble coping, he and Tammy were a long plane ride away. How can you forget that your child, someone you’ve dedicated years to keeping safe from the perils of the world, has deliberately hurt herself? “It’s with you forever,” says Tammy. These days, she and Bret are proud of their daughter’s independence and the new life she’s created. But like a lot of parents who’ve feared for their child’s health, they don’t take the ordinary for granted anymore.

Days 27 to 30 - Cobourg!
Day 27 - Tuesday
Tuesday dawned like all the other days up here – it got light and right after that, it got hot! Almost no cloud and being closer to the Equator, the Sun burns more directly and hotter. All days are hat and sunscreen days. But it is soooo beautiful, the heat is hardly a problem.
On the road by 7.15 after a healthy brekky and off to Cahill’s Crossing on the East Alligator River. It is a tidal river (tides flow in and out with the river flowing against the incoming tide and augmenting the outgoing one) and your crossing needs to be timed to ensure the water level is sufficiently low (no more than half a metre seems to be general practice up here) and the current abated enough to avoid being washed off the road into the croc-infested torrent. There is an upside-down Landrover in the river just downstream from the crossing left by people who misjudged the current – and I think two guys died as a result. One needs to be aware of a few different hazards up here. While there, we saw some guys fishing and one of them caught a huge barramundi – I think Alex guessed it at 12-15kg, possibly more.
Once the Crossing was successfully crossed, we travelled through a beautiful area of grassland containing patches of water festooned with water lilies and water birds. There were numerous species when one searched carefully, but the white herons really stood our – all 4 species! (We Had lunch at Fogg Dam on our own a week later and counted 30-odd species in an hour – among maybe tens of thousands of birds.)
Next stop was Gunbalanya – an indigenous community with a strong arts focus and we watched several of the artists, mainly painters, creating their masterpieces. They are not something that I particularly hanker after, but having watched them at work, I am in awe of their ability to draw straight lines, circles and other shapes using the most primitive tools (brushes cut from speargrass stems) absolutely freehand with never a mistake. Seemingly quite natural for them, utterly impossible for most of us.
We picked up a local guide at the Arts Centre and set off for Injalak Hill, maybe 5km out of town. We parked the car at the foot of the hill and set off for the summit! We saw some Jabirus fly in to their nesting sites on the top of the hill and said ‘if they can do it, so can we’. No idea why, it was a silly thing to say, but the challenge was there. It was a really strenuous climb with frequent pauses to catch our breaths and let the stragglers catch up, but we made it. Michael, our Aboriginal guide, was most solicitous of we oldies and from time to time, he started small bushfires to clear some of the tall grass to make it easier for us to take particular routes up the rocky climb. I have commented on the use of fire elsewhere, but Michael simply lit fires wherever he thought appropriate and they burned 20-30 square metres and then went out quite spontaneously. Apparently, the indigenes know where and how to use fire to ensure it achieves its objective and then dies out itself, rather than creating an inferno – having said that, it was a hot day and heat from the fires was quite intense.
Injalak is an amazing conglomeration of large/huge/enormous rocks and the aborigines have been painting on them for millennia. Michael told us some of the stories, but many of them are secret men’s or women’s business and can’t be disclosed to the uninitiated. One area he took us to was a former burial site and there are still skulls and other bones hidden, but visible, in the area. We eventually reached the top of the hill (the jabirus were on a nearby inaccessible outcrop) where we had lunch. We were very high up and we could see miles and miles of floodplain, including the billabong the town of Gunbalanya is set beside. It was quite breathtaking – hectare on hectare of brilliant green grass and huge swathes of water lilies encircled by many thousands of birds – egrets, herons, terns, raptors, waders…… Just thousands of them all doing what they do every day, but gobsmacking for me. Iconic NT wetlands as I have always imagined them.
We had a few other stops as we headed north – out of Kakadu, across Arnhem Land and up the Cobourg Peninsula to the Cobourg Coastal Camp operated by Venture North (our touring guides). The Camp is more of a Glamp, set on a 100-foot cliff overlooking Port Essington (4 times the size of Sydney Harbour). After a brief tour of the Camp and being shown to our tents, it was time for a quick cold shower and a Happy Hour with champers and nibbles at the ‘patio’ on the edge of the cliff. The sun was setting and it was a most wonderful experience. The tide was low and a big 4-metre croc was basking in the shallows almost at our feet. We saw several 2.5-metre sharks cruising by. Also, some big rays seemingly flying along with undulating wings and the odd turtle or two. It was like being on another planet or in another time – but that is what we paid our money for and it was worth it. The food was excellent for every meal and by the time we rolled into bed, I think we were all completely sated with the adventures of the day and looking to more in the morning.
Day 28 – Wednesday
Our rooms are tents, but a bit more elaborate than the usual cub-scout ones. They are set up permanently on raised hard-floor platforms, each with two single beds and a minimum of furniture. (As a result of our feedback, the managers were out buying more furniture and a few minor accoutrements the following week.)
The toilets and showers (hot and cold, but we only needed cold!) were a short walk away and had wonderful views of the bush. Great birdwatching locations. All very private, but with the roof and one side (above a metre or so) open to the sky and bush. All equipped with frogs, some with toads, and at least one with a snake. Plenty enough mozzies to go around, and unfortunately, most seemed to prefer to dine on Heather and she has been suffering ever since. The toilets were all self-composting, but to reach the throne, you had to ascend three steps to the elevated dais – but at least the climb improved the view across the woodland and facilitated the birding.
After breakfast, we boarded the boat (wet landings both ends) and set out for Victoria Settlement. On the way, we stopped a couple of times to look at some shorebirds, including a couple we had not seen before (one of which is quite endangered) and encountered a pod of dolphins that enjoyed surfacing right next to the boat on numerous occasions before becoming bored with their human spectators.
Victoria Settlement is the area where a British ‘colony’ was established for 11 years in the mid-1800s. It failed (like the other two they set up nearby) but we did a 3.5km walk in extreme heat to look at what was left of the ruins. It was all very interesting, but not so unlike things we have seen elsewhere and the heat and exertion was sapping – I think I drank at least 5 litres that day, not all of it beer. Back in the boat, we headed back to camp, but spent an hour or so ‘fishing’ for our dinner that night. We trolled along and Peta was given the rod and caught several barracuda that were released (they don’t eat them) and one rock cod that became dinner, mainly for Heather and me because neither the other Heather, nor Peta eat seafood. Incidentally, there was a third Heather at camp - she was the mother of the owners. She and Ross, her husband, were up there helping out for a couple of months so there were actually three Heathers at dinner each night. She was fine – really nice – but Ross was a bit overpowering at times.
After lunch, the afternoon was free and I spent most of it wandering around looking at birds. Heather was really unwell after the morning’s exertion (and the previous day’s mountaineering) so spent most of the afternoon asleep. At least that meant she was feeling much better the next day.
Day 29 – Thursday
Another interesting day! We left camp about 8am and headed north to the northernmost point in the NT – Smith Point (via the pig trap, unfortunately empty, but we rebaited it with kitchen scraps). We stopped numerous times en route, this time staying quite close to the coast and noting the different nature of both the landscape and the vegetation. We called in at a few places to look for mud crabs and Alex was very proud of himself for catching a really big one. He broke his crab spear at the first place we stopped, but gaffa-taped it together and caught the crab with a seriously incapacitated spear at our next stop. We also collected quite a lot of cockles in the shallows and our booty was augmented with some huge oysters that had been collected by Heather, the camp mother. That was mainly (my) Heather’s and my Happy Hour food that evening – Ross scoffed some of it, but there were plenty of other delicacies to choose from anyway. (I think I said that Peta and her Mum don’t eat seafood.)
We saw a few new shorebirds and did some beach-combing at several spots and eventually stopped for lunch just shy of Smith Point. The coastal country was quite different from what we had previously been driving through so we had new trees and plants to discover as well as unusual shells on the beach and a quite different environment to explore.
We went on to Smith Point and spent some time there learning a bit of local history and looking at (and photographing) different flowers and unusual rocks. We went on to the Ranger Station where the Ranger’s wife offered a ‘Buying Opportunity’ of some of her jewellery, craft and photographs. Heather indulged, but I went looking for birds at the nearby billabong – with very limited success.
We called in at a couple more quite beautiful billabongs on the way back to camp, always aware that there could well be crocodiles lurking mere metres from our feet. The water is crystal-clear and often quite shallow, making it a bit harder for a croc to creep up on you – but they are sneaky critters – huge animals that ambush their prey by stealth. We have watched them with only their eyes above water, sometimes not even that, slinking through the water ever so slowly creeping up on a wallaby or a fish – and Ross tossed a couple of slices of bacon onto the beach 20-30 metres from where a big croc was lurking (we spent a lot of time on the ‘patio’ watching him - the croc rather than Ross) and he simply exploded out of the water and rocketed up the beach to eat it. It was sooooo scary – nobody would stand a chance against the speed and power of this most ferocious animal if he decided that you were his next meal. Still, plenty of people go swimming or stand in the water to fish so they must know something we don’t – but I won’t tempt fate anyway.
Back at camp, I went birding for a while before Happy Hour and a scrumptious dinner, but we were all tired and crashed early.
Day 30 – Friday
I awoke pretty miserable with a cold. I had a sore throat the previous day, but sitting in the enclosed car all day with Sean hacking and sneezing all week, it was probably inevitable. I was determined not to let it spoil anything, but by early afternoon, I would have been quite happy napping the rest of the day. It was mainly a day of driving the 500-odd kilometres back to Darwin, but we stopped to enjoy a few things along the way.
On the way up, we had seen a bus bogged on the side of the road, laying half on its side, it was bogged so deeply. It was one operated by an up-market touring company that seemingly employs rather careless drivers. They had bogged one of their buses about a week earlier and it took several days to dig it out. Of course, they also had to ferry their customers out a few hundred kilometres back the way they came instead of them flying out from the resort they were heading for. The very next day, the driver bogged a second bus in exactly the same place and it took a while to get the passengers out because the bus was leaning over so far, they couldn’t get the door open. They ended up leaving the bus there and used two more buses, one to take the clients to where the bus was bogged where they had to walk past the bog and onto another bus to take them onto their destination. We bumped into one of their drivers more than a week later when we were both fuelling our vehicles and he said they had only recovered the bogged bus the previous day – a very costly couple of mistakes and a serious dent in their reputation. At least it gave us a talking point and a few photos to memorialise the escapade.
We stopped at the Murganella low-level river crossing for morning tea and Alex went fishing – maybe a bit risky in our view, but he did catch a couple of barra although too small to keep so they were released, possibly only to be eaten by the next passing crocodile. We had to stop again at Cahill’s Crossing and had lunch there while we waited for the tide to recede enough for us to cross. We watched a big croc lurking near the floodway and saw several fishermen and women – but they caught nothing while we were there (nor did the croc). A few rather foolhardy punters crossed with the tide at close to 700mm, but one was nearly washed sideways by the current so we wisely waited until it dropped to just under 500mm.
Back in Kakadu, we went to Ubirr where there were a lot of aboriginal rock paintings. It was quite a steep climb to the top of the hill for the enthusiasts who wanted to see all of them, but with me suffering shortness of breath with the cold and Heather a bit puffed too, we saw what we saw and wimped out on the steepest section – and let the others go to the final level (which by report was little different from what we had seen anyway).
We stopped for fuel at Jabiru and saw some penned crocs and buffalo and it was very sad to see. These magnificent wild animals were confined for life in quite small areas and after seeing their cousins in the wild only days before, it was quite depressing. There were plenty of cute little agile wallabies hopping around though so that was more encouraging.
We finally made it back to Darwin and the caravan about 7.30 and we were both a bit worse for wear. Heather’s was also developing a cold and we both had mozzy bites (Heather had heaps and hives as well) so we were quite glad to be ‘home’ again. We ate dinner from a can, had a cold shower and watched the final episode of Vera - and crashed.
It had been a WONDERFUL trip, the experience of a lifetime, a fabulous adventure in the remotest of Aussie wilderness – but it was hot, sticky and exhausting, on the go for long hours each day, and with our minor health issues emerging, probably long enough for us. We had had a great time, but it was really good to be back home.
