Language of Flowers: Chamomile
In the language of flowers, there is a flower for every day of the year. The flower for today, December 17, is Chamomile, which signifies energy in adversity. Image above from Wikipedia. This soothing aromatic herb–fifth of the nine magic herbs cited in the Lacnunga, a tenth-century Anglo-Saxon herbal–symbolized energy as well as humility, because it grows stronger, faster, and more fragrant…

Cleansing Tea Bath against Stress
From my grimoire to yours.
Tea baths have been used for millennia to cure various ailments, improve one's looks, and cleanse the taker: the first recorded tea baths date back all the way to ancient Egypt. Cleopatra was said to take herbal baths, as did empress Sissi. I, personally, do not get the opportunity to bathe often anymore. But now that I am spending some time at home in the countryside, with access to a bathtub, I think it's high time I take an herbal bath to shake the unnecessary stress I've been feeling.
The Ingredients
Kitchen Sage (Salvia Officinalis) Sage has a long history as a bath herb, especially in medieval Europe. The Romans considered it a sacred herb, using it in religious rites, and held it in high esteem for medicine. The same goes for Medieval Europeans, who sometimes referred to it as the savior herb. It has many healing properties, and is quite fragrant. I will try not to go too in depth about individual herbs here, but feel free to ask me about them! I will try to make a post about them. In this bath, the sage serves to relax, purify, and rejuvenate.
Chamomile (Matricaria Chamomilla OR Chamaemelum Nobile) Chamomile, both the German and Roman variety, is an especially potent relaxing herb. Historically it was especially well loved to treat symptoms associated with PMS and PCOS, which is where the genus name of Matricaria comes from. Roman Chamomile was historically considered a painkiller and relaxer.
Mugwort (Artemisia Vulgaris) A less popular, but very noteworthy herb for purifying. In Nepal, brooms are sometimes made of it (supposedly) to cleanse the home. Mugwort is still used in modern medicine to this day, and was very prized by Medieval Europeans, who used it both in their food and drink, and in their medicine.
St. John's Wort (Hypericum Perforatum) Be sure to take care when you obtain this plan! Please buy responsibly and check if it is protected in your area. St. John's Wort is another one of those herbs that people throughout history have prized immensely. Historically it was used to treat nearly anything, and this high regard is reflected in its common name, one of the most important apostles in Christianity. Nowadays there is research being done into St. John's Wort antidepressive properties, and various streams of herbal and alternative medicine use it actively to treat anxiety, panic disorders, depression, etc. St. John's Wort is also excellent against headaches. But I digress.
After these, you can add whatever scented or additional ingredients. Some options: - A few drops of essential oil - Your favorite strongly smelling herbs, like lavender (calming) or rosemary (rejuvenating) - A few spoonfuls of salt - A bath bomb - Whatever makes you happy - (a rubber ducky)
Of course, the herbs can't do all the work. Indulge yourself. Create a nice ambiance with some candles or some dim lighting, get the water to the right temperature, and try your best to relax as you take the bath. Do whatever takes your mind off what stresses you out and let the bath soak everything out of you. Best of luck to you, hold oe kreggel!

Ostara Dreaming
"Use this blend before bed to dream of love - especially the night before the spring equinox.
3 drops Roman chamomile essential oil (Chamaemelum nobile) (preferred) or Cape chamomile essential oil (Eriocephalus punctulatus) for luck, sleep, love
1 drop jasmine absolute (Jasminum officinale) for love, prophetic dreams
5 drops lavender essential oil (Lavandula angustifolia) for love, peace, protection
1 drop Turkish rose absolute (Rose damascena) or rose geranium essential oil (Pelargonium graveolens) for love, dreams
Springtime is when minds drift toward love. Spring flings, first romances, and vow renewals all have their place in the spring dreaming. Mix all oils, and diffuse 1 drop synergy per 100 ml water.
For massage, mix 15 drops synergy per ounce of carrier oil (a good all-purpose oil is sweet almond) plus a drop or two of vitamin E to preserve the mix."
-Blackthorn's Botanical Magic by Amy Blackthorn
Edit: NOTE: Essential oils and absolutes can be expensive, and this book has shown to present a few costly recipes, so take them with a grain of salt. I personally use oil infusions rather than essential oils because of chemical sensitivity, and it tends not to be of high cost comparatively. I take all of these recipes as a suggestion of correspondence rather than something I absolutely must follow. It's better to get creative and use what you have on hand rather than spend a ton of money on some oils you'll only use once or twice.

His little Swan
I got the idea from the wip ideas from @pollyna. I do hope you like it, dear.
She became his little swan.
That was only fair - after all the pain he gotten through.
The erasing of his family in front of his eyes.
The overwhelming pain and sickness, throwing up, until he felt his stomach twisting.
The incredible torture, hot, stinging waves of nausea and ache. It felt like he was burning alive.
The coma - endless dreams of his sister. A broken, small body, laying on the ground. A doll, thrown away, the limbs grotesque, white eyes and vomit.
His little swan soothed the pain.
She was hesitating at first. Of course she was.
He had used force.
To get inside the house.
Erasing the one thing the white king had cared about.
Relocating the other, little thing he still cared for.
When the headache and soreness of his body bothered him too much, he sat down for meditation. Not focusing on his breath, of his heartbeat, but the imagine of the white King, searching in panic for the body of the little one.
A pretty swan, nearly frozen. Blue, broken eyes, begging.
It had satisfied him. For the first time after the traumatic events and the year in the hospital, he felt in charge again. Powerful.
He rescued the little swan, and she became HIS!
It took time.
At first, she refused to walk. But she had to get into the warmth of the house at the sea.
She was already close to a pneumonia.
He cut her clothes from her shivering body, his eyes avoiding her with an too long unused emotion of embarrassment.
A shower, long and lug warm.
Rubbing her limbs dry until she was lobster red.
Drying her hair.
Wrapping her in layers of warm clothes.
Forcing her into the jeep, then into the helicopter.
Filling her up with the tea.
He was prepared for every situation.
This wasn't planned.
But he felt satisfied.
She was his now.
Lyutsifer walked stiffly along the corridors. A thin folder holding with one hand, white gloves and a tweezers in the other.
He knew where to find her, thanks to the surveillance system. Even without one.
The media room was always the warmest place. TV, Wii, Books and drawing material.. to have a child in the house meant also to give it education.
He wasn't a fan of tutoring, but know it was important, even that he had to left her under the care of strange men. He had a close eyes on them, of course. He let his little swan decide for herself what she wanted to learn.
But after a while she had asked for special subjects. He was eager to comply. Rather proud of her healthy curiosity.
Having no Wi-Fi allowance helped too.
Entering the media room he found it empty. He looked around. She was here. Did she hide on purpose? For the fun of it?
“Little Swan, little Swan, who are you?”, he cooed. He wandered around the huge couch, formed like a big L, to find her laying on the ground, her feet resting on the couch rim.
Maddie ignored him by focusing pouting on the book she's holding. Lyutsifer chuckled to himself and walked over to the table to set the folder on it.
He put on the gloves and opened the folder.
Five example of flowers rested on fine paper inside it, dry and pressed.
“Healing lesson.”, he said and waited for a reaction.
She sighed. Snapped the book close.
“Why?”
“You know why.”
She rolled over and huffed.
“Because I'm a smart girl, who should get smarter.”
“Exactly.”, Lyutsifer bobbed his head. He picked the first dry flower up with the tweezers.
Holding it up he ordered: “Explain.”
“Pfff. That's easy. Chamomile.”
“Aaaaand?”
She cleared her throat and recited: “Chamomile is the common name for several daisy-like plants of the family Asteraceae. Two of the species, Matricaria chamomilla and Chamaemelum nobile, are commonly used to make herbal infusions for beverages.”
She stopped and gave Lyutsifer a truculent glance. Lyutsifer ignored it.
“Aaaand?”
“Chamomile tea is a herbal infusion made from dried flowers and hot water, and may improve sleep quality.”
Lyutsifer nodded satisfied. Well enough for a twelve year old.
“Very good.”
He picked the next pressed flower.
She frowned.
“Snapdragons?”
“That was a question, not an answer.” he said firm.
Maddie shuffled into a straight position and repeat even so firmly: “Snapdragons.”
Before Lyutsifer could ask further, she went on.
“The seeds have been used to extract edible oils, while the leaves and flowers have been considered to possess anti-inflammatory properties and have been used in poultices. A green dye has also been extracted from the flowers.”
“Can you tell me, why I am using the oil?”
“Well, not for the homeopathic effect.”, Maddie answered pert.”
“Why not?”
“Because homeopathic is humbug.”
Lyutsifer chuckled.
“But..?”
“The aromatherapy is helping one to relax, even that it is just a placebo effect.”
“You're on fire today.”, Lyutsifer praised her and picked the next.
Maddie, warming up to the lesson, shuffled closer to Lyutsifer.
“white snakeroot... Root tea has been used to treat diarrhea, kidney stones, and fever. A root poultice can be used on snakebites.”
“Black cohosh...Historically used for arthritis and muscle pain, used more recently for conditions related to menopause and menstruation.”
“Horse chestnut..treating joint pain, bladder and gastrointestinal problems, fever, leg cramps, and other conditions.”
Lyutsifer smiled wide and set the last flower away.
“That was amazing!”, he cheered. “What a clever, little botanican you are already, my little swan!”
Maddie sneered. “You know MY Name, yes?”
Lyutsifer smiled fine. “Madeline Swann. Maddie. My little Swan. A clever girl.”, he said and reaches out to catch her nose between his crocked digger and middle finger.
Maddie backed up and giggled.
“Stop it. I'm hungry.” She rose and shoke her half asleep legs. “Feed me!”
“Of course. I believe you deserve a chocolate dessert after that.”
“Yay!”

January 20th: Chamomile (matricaria chamomilla and Chamaemelum nobile)
(Takes a deep breath) I love chamomile.
Now, afaik, there are two main versions of chamomile. Roman chamomile, and German chamomile. This is also gonna be a pretty lore-heavy post, because there's a lot of backstory to be found to these little flowers.
We're gonna be covering- you guessed it- both of 'em.
First off, tho. Medical properties. Don't come @ me please. Disclaimer. Cool. So!
Chamomile oil is an antispasmodic and a nervine oil. When paired with other herbal infusions, it's also an effective digestion thing. It's also analgesic, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory.
It's also used as a sedative and nervous relaxer, especially effective with mild insomnia. Chamomile is also good for skincare, and can be strong/weak/fine enough for small children and babies.
Mostly, the medical parts are the petals, but the leaves are also useful. It has a medical history of being used for AFAB 'ailments' including pregnancy and post-natal depression.
Now. Chamomile in general is under the 'sun' planetary ruler and the 'water' elemental category (which is somewhat strange but I'll take it!). It's got a LOT of lore, so I hope you're all strapped in.
Chamomile English is one of the nine sacred herbs of the Celts, was sacred to Egyptian Priesthood, and is sacred to.. (takes a deep breath)
Hermes, Sol (Hellenistic)
Baldur, Mimir, Sif, Gullveig, Wodun/Odin (Asatro)
Cernunnos, Cerridwen, Karnayna (Celtic)
Ra (Kemetism)
Mercury, Helios (Greco-Roman)
Oshun (Yorùbá)
(If any of these terms are unknown to you, I suggest you check out the glossary.)
Let's start with chamomile German (matricaria chamomilla). The national flower of Russia, chamomile German is similar to English in properties, but is less known for oils and other stuff.
It's meanings are mostly calm-centred, boasting a long list of definitions. This includes; relax, calm down, soothing, ease, ease nightmares, release tension, energy, love, attract love, equilibrium, patience in adversity, and nervous system support (due to it's medical properties).
Chamomile English or Roman (Chamaemelum nobile) is the more lore-heavy one.
This herb was used in ancient Egyptian embalming herb, a sacred herb to Ra. It was said that if you kept a pressed chamomile flower in your wallet, it would attract money.
Similarly, it is said that if you wash your hands with chamomile-infused whatever before gambling, it means good luck. Chamomile was also planted next to weaker plants to 'make them stronger'.
As it's oil has antiseptic properties, it was also used in WWII as a natural disinfectant during surgeries and healing. It also aided digestion.
It was seen as a sign of respect among herbalists and physicians to talk patiently to the plant as you were picking it (this was around 1000 AD), listing it's uses or why you're picking it.
Now for the meanings of English/Roman chamomile: The most common meanings were energy in adversity and remembrance. Of course, as time has gone on, it's collected a couple more.
These include; admiration of courage, patience, abundance, calm, do not despair, fortitude, attract wealth, sleepiness, wisdom, love, and austerity in love.
I have a floriography blog! @bloomsong-from-a-swans-breath! :)

Is Chamomile Tea Good for Sleep?
Chamomile tea has long been celebrated as a soothing beverage, cherished for its calming properties and association with better sleep. But what makes this herbal tea such an effective remedy for sleepless nights? Let’s delve into the science behind chamomile tea, its benefits, and why it’s considered one of the best chamomile teas for relaxation and stress relief.
What is Chamomile Tea?
Chamomile tea is made from the dried flowers of the Matricaria chamomilla or Chamaemelum nobile plants. Known for its mild, earthy flavor and floral aroma, this tea is often associated with relaxation and tranquility.
Unlike caffeinated teas, chamomile is naturally caffeine-free, making it an excellent choice as a stress relief tea or a bedtime beverage. Whether you are looking to unwind after a long day or improve the quality of your sleep, chamomile tea offers a natural solution.
How Chamomile Tea Promotes Sleep
The effectiveness of chamomile tea in promoting sleep lies in its bioactive compounds:
1. Apigenin: The Sleep-Inducing Antioxidant
Chamomile contains apigenin, a powerful antioxidant that binds to certain receptors in the brain. This interaction promotes relaxation and reduces anxiety, making it easier to fall asleep. As one of the most well-known teas for relaxation, chamomile is a natural alternative to sleeping pills.
2. Reduces Stress and Anxiety
Many people struggle with sleep due to high stress levels or racing thoughts. Chamomile tea is widely regarded as an excellent tea for stress, thanks to its calming effect on the nervous system. A warm cup of this tea can ease tension and prepare your mind and body for restful sleep.
3. Improves Sleep Quality
Unlike some herbal teas that only make you drowsy, chamomile goes a step further by improving sleep quality. Research has shown that drinking chamomile tea regularly helps reduce nighttime awakenings, leading to more restorative sleep.
Why Chamomile Tea is a Top Choice for Relaxation
Chamomile tea stands out among other teas for relaxation due to its versatility and holistic benefits:
Mild Flavor: Its gentle taste makes it palatable for everyone.
Caffeine-Free: Perfect for nighttime consumption without the risk of disrupting your sleep cycle.
Natural Remedy: Free of synthetic additives, chamomile is a natural option for those seeking wellness through herbal means.
If you're looking for the best chamomile tea, prioritize those made from organic, high-quality flowers. This ensures maximum potency and effectiveness.
Scientific Evidence: Chamomile Tea and Sleep
Numerous studies have validated the role of chamomile tea in improving sleep:
A study published in the Journal of Advanced Nursing found that postpartum women who drank chamomile tea experienced significantly better sleep quality and reduced symptoms of depression.
Another study in Phytomedicine revealed that participants who consumed chamomile extract fell asleep faster and had fewer interruptions during sleep compared to those given a placebo.
These findings make chamomile tea a scientifically-backed choice for those struggling with insomnia or poor sleep.
Stress Relief with Chamomile Tea
Chamomile is often referred to as the ultimate stress relief tea because it directly impacts the body’s stress response:
Soothes the Nervous System: Its natural compounds help reduce cortisol levels, the hormone responsible for stress.
Encourages Deep Breathing: Pairing chamomile tea with mindfulness or deep breathing exercises can amplify its calming effects.
Prepares the Mind for Sleep: By reducing mental agitation, chamomile tea enables a smoother transition into rest.
When choosing the best chamomile tea for stress relief, opt for varieties that contain whole flowers or loose-leaf blends to ensure you’re getting the highest concentration of beneficial compounds.
How to Brew the Perfect Cup of Chamomile Tea
For maximum relaxation and sleep benefits, follow these steps to brew chamomile tea:
Boil Fresh Water: Use filtered water for a clean, pure flavor.
Add Tea: Use 1-2 teaspoons of loose-leaf chamomile tea or one tea bag per cup.
Steep Properly: Allow the tea to steep for 5-10 minutes to extract its beneficial compounds fully.
Enjoy Warm: Sip slowly to enjoy the calming aroma and flavor.
Pro Tip: Add a teaspoon of honey to enhance the flavor and boost its soothing effects.
Additional Benefits of Chamomile Tea
Apart from its sleep-inducing qualities, chamomile tea offers several health benefits:
Anti-Inflammatory Properties: Its antioxidants help reduce inflammation, promoting overall wellness.
Supports Digestive Health: Chamomile tea soothes the digestive system, relieving bloating and indigestion.
Boosts Immunity: Regular consumption strengthens the immune system, protecting against colds and infections.
Skin Health: Chamomile’s anti-inflammatory compounds can improve skin conditions like eczema and acne.
Practical Tips for Better Sleep
Incorporating chamomile tea into your nightly routine is just one step. For optimal results, combine it with these sleep hygiene practices:
Maintain a Consistent Sleep Schedule: Go to bed and wake up at the same time daily.
Create a Relaxing Environment: Dim the lights and eliminate noise distractions.
Limit Screen Time: Avoid screens at least an hour before bed to prevent blue light disruption.
Practice Relaxation Techniques: Yoga, meditation, or deep breathing can complement the effects of chamomile tea.
Conclusion: Why Chamomile Tea is the Best Choice for Sleep
Chamomile tea is undoubtedly one of the best chamomile teas for promoting relaxation, reducing stress, and improving sleep quality. Its natural sedative properties, coupled with its ability to soothe the nervous system, make it a powerful remedy for insomnia and anxiety.
For those seeking a tea for stress relief or a way to unwind at the end of the day, chamomile tea is a tried-and-true solution. Whether you’re sipping it for its sleep benefits or to calm your mind, a warm cup of chamomile tea can transform your nightly routine into a moment of tranquility. So, brew a cup of chamomile tea tonight and experience its calming magic firsthand. How to Grow Chamomile in Containers
May 22, 2020 by Kristine Lofgren
Chamomile is a marvelous medicinal herb with beautiful blooms. But let’s be honest: it can be a bit boisterous in the garden. It’s one of those plants that you start growing, only to find a few years later that it has reseeded, and volunteers have started popping up all over the place.Or maybe you don’t have the space to dedicate to an in-ground plot for your favorite herbs, but you long for the fresh taste of homegrown chamomile tea.The solution? Containers.
Planting chamomile in a pot keeps things under control. You can still enjoy those pretty little white flowers, even if you only have a tiny spot in the corner of your apartment balcony.
There are two types of chamomile: Roman, Chamaemelum nobile, and German, Matricaria recutita.
Both are suitable for container growing, but German chamomile can get large, so you’ll need a heftier pot to grow this one. I’ll provide more differences between the two species below.
Here’s what we’ll cover:
