grow on me like a dog loved fondly: prologue | kamo choso
wc: 1.0k
summary: your regular to the flower shop is more than what he seems.
contains: written with f!reader in mind but can be read as gn!, animal shelter employee choso x flower shop owner reader, implied that reader is shorter than choso, flowers, small talk.
a/n: the promised choso drabble! depending on how this is received, i intend for this to be the prologue to a longer choso fic i have in mind!
Tumblr media
You have a regular on the weekends.
Business in the flower shop tends to be slow during winter, with less occasions having the need for flowers and even less buds blooming during the season.
But even with the expected decline in customers, Saturdays always guarantee one—
The bells attached to the store doors jingle, allowing in a gust of cool air that tickles your cheeks from where you’re crouched down. The peonies in your hands were delivered just yesterday, the ends of the stems needing a slight trim to keep them fresh for longer.
You turn, standing up to face your visitor. A purple scarf is wrapped high around his neck, with white fleece running down the length of his arms—a sort of undershirt to the short-sleeved uniform worn atop it. The outfit is familiar enough, but what truly distinguishes him are the two spiky pigtails on the sides of his head.
There are a few things you’ve managed to pick up from four-line exchanges with your regular (six if you’re lucky): 1) he works at the animal shelter a few streets away, 2) the flowers he buys are for the front desk, a weekly replacement he deems necessary to keep the place looking alive, and 3) who he is, his name—
—‘Choso’, if the tag on his uniform says anything.
The tag that is now, also, just a hand’s reach away from you.
You look up, pocketing your plant nippers. The peonies dangle between your fingers.
“W-welcome!” you stutter, focusing on the thin metal chain running across his nose.
It’s new, an addition that intrigues you more about the man in front of you.
The look he gives you is lazy, gaze deadpan, almost empty. Anyone else might find it snobbish and off-putting, but you’ve gotten used to it—an almost magenta puffiness that surrounds his eyes, bags of fatigue that usually hang underneath.
He continues to stare, unmoving.
Considering all your previous interactions, you’ve realized, he isn’t scary or rude or anything of that sort—he’s just awkward.
A bit quiet and unbothered, maybe, but still just awkward. You don’t think he’s ever started an interaction with you first.
“Is there any flower in particular that you’re looking for?” you ask, motioning around your store.
The selection is limited this season—a few camellias and clusters of Japanese primrose with an abundance of peonies and daffodils.
His head turns as he glances around the store, pigtails bobbing slightly with each movement. When he faces you again, he shrugs, voice deep and firm as he asks, “Do you have any recommendations?”
It’s an odd feeling, borderline awkward and nervous; you have no idea why your mind is blanking.
“Um,” you clear your throat, tucking the peonies between your fingers into your apron pocket, “daffodils are bright and friendly, good for entryways and front desks, I think.”
He eyes the daffodils to your right, buckets of stems holding yellow and white. The store stays quiet for what feels like a good minute before he nods, agreeing to your suggestion.
“The usual?” two clusters, wrapped in newspaper.
Your question echoes throughout the shop, lingering while you pick at which daffodils look best.
“Yes, but two of them.” he answers in monotone, before adding on, a soft hesitancy, “Please.”
You smile to yourself, picking more daffodils for another bunch.
Both of you make your way to the cashier, another bout of silence surrounding you as you crumple newspaper and pull at tape. He always watches, you notice, his focus set on your practiced handling of stems and leaves.
You look up momentarily, seeing that he keeps his head down, “The pigtails are cool.”
He doesn’t say anything, and for a while you’re afraid you might have offended him, but he responds, voice low; it’s soft, gentle in a way you never expected it to be.
“Thank you.” you catch him shifting his weight from your periphery, hands digging deeper into his pockets, “The dogs think they’re chew toys when I wear it this way.”
You most certainly were not expecting that, either.
This is the most initiative he’s taken to add onto the conversation.
You grin, chuckling under your breath, “That must be fun.”
It’s faint, but you think you hear him laugh a little.
When the flowers are completely wrapped, you set them aside, making your way behind the cash register. You punch in the cost, ready to bill him before he speaks again.
“Actually, would you happen to do deliveries?” he seems shy asking it, barely looking you in the eye.
“Yes!” You nod, grabbing a pen and paper to hand over to him, “Just write down your contact details, the address you want it delivered to, and when you’d like it to be delivered.”
Another thing you’ve realized, is that despite appearances and what he seems to be, Choso handles objects gently; the pen and paper you’d just given him were taken lightly from your fingertips. Even the strokes of his penmanship are slow, the tip of the pen barely creating an indent on the small sheet.
“Will you be having both of these delivered?” you ask, holding up the bundles of daffodils.
“Just one.” he answers promptly, before adding on again, “Thank you.”
And you know you shouldn’t ask, shouldn’t be so nosy, but—
“What’s the occasion?”—
Flowers are rarely in demand during the winter season.
—“If you don’t mind me asking,” you follow-up quickly.
The immediate quiet makes you think you might have gotten too comfortable again, made him feel weird about your questions—but he answers.
“My brothers,” he finishes the final curves of his writing, “they’re coming to visit.”
The piece of paper is handed to you, and you hum, acknowledging his response. You go over his details, reciting it to him to double-check. But when you land on his address, your eyes go wide, a little ‘oh!’ slipping out.
He furrows his brows, confused.
You definitely, most certainly did not expect this.
“Sorry,” you shake your head, your cheeks heating up in embarrassment, “Just—“ you chuckle, “I think we might be neighbors.”

Country fried comfort
Notes: i wrote this for my friend as a comfort post. So here you go @cannibalgremlin
Sky was sitting out by the cuccoo pen. Playing somber tune on his harp. Twilight who had been walking by carrying sacks of feed for the animals of Lon Lon ranch. Paused and listen. He looked at his fellow brother’s face. Somber it self. Staring out in a sad way. Rancher made his way to the barn and placed the three bags of feed down. He watched at several other members of the chain were working in the barn. Four was helping make new horse shoes. While War and Legend worked on shuffling down new hay. After the stalls had been mucked. The rancher walked over to a bucket and washed his hands and face off.
“Think i shall head inside for a bit. Thinking to tell wild to make something.” He explained as he left. Waving the others in the barn off.
Once inside the house, he went quickly to the wash room to clean up and then change into fresher clothing. Putting on his Ordon garb while place his dirty clothing into a wash pile. Extend the room and headed to the kitchen where wild was busy working some bread dough out, while Malon was husking some corn. He cleared his through, making them both look at him. He softly smiled and walked in and rolled up his sleeves. Malon was questioning what her blood was going to do. Wild smiled, glad to have an extra hand in the kitchen.
“Sky is looking tad gloomy. He been playing a somber tune to the cuccoos. Half worried they may die on us with how sad the tune is. I am thinking maybe making a bit of comfort food. Country specialty.” He explained with a smile.
“What you have in mind?” Asked Malon. Stopping what she was doing.
He walked over and took an unhusked corn and started helping with peeling the husk away. “Fried cuccoo mash bowl. If you got potato’s, we can make a mash. Chop the corn off its stem, fry cucoo, put them together with some gravy…creating a fried cuccoo bowl. Can’t go wrong with that?” He explained.
Malon beamed with happiness. As did the champion.
“That kind of you. So what should we do?’ Asked the youth. As he folded the bread dough one more time before resting it.
“Hm, how bout you do the mashed potato, Mrs. Lon-“
“Just call me mal. Or ma’ if you want.” She interrupted.
“Okay ma’ you take care of the corn, and i will handle the fried cuccoo and gravy.” He replied to her.
She smile and nodded. Wild stood for a bit. “You know how to cook?” He asked the rancher.
Twilight smirked and having some stuff to start making the fried cuccoo and smirks.
“You bet your goddesses I do. I live alone, lui taught me the basics, ilia helped as well. But i know how to cook food. Nit as good as you. But decent enough.” He explained.
————————
The three worked hard in the kitchen. Working on the meal. Rancher was making sure the meal was well seasoned. Nothing is more disappointing than an unseasoned meal. Wild would help with a few things and helping Taste things, along with Malon, giving suggestions when needed. The house smelt heavenly as the spices and such floated through the room. Malon after finishing with the corn, started making sweet tea for everyone. The three laughing and giggling in the kitchen. Homey.
Wild went about setting the table with glasses and utensils. As Twilight started making the bowls of food. Adding equal amounts of mashed potato’s, corn, and fried chicken for everyone plate. Then drizzling gravy over it. Malon helped put the bowls on the table. She then made here way to front door to ring the lads in for lunch. As they approached she order them all to wash up before thinking to eat all filthy as hey were. That including her husband who attempted to get a hug from her. However got shooed off.
Once everyone had cleaned up. They all sat at the table. Sky eyes the bowl in front of him. The smell of it danced under his nose. He looked up and Rancher smiled at him. “Enjoy.”
“Wait? You cooked this?” Asked the Veteran.
“You sure tootin he did. With a little help from Champ and I.” Malon replied with a smile.
“No way? He cooks and didn’t burn anything?” Chuckled the captain about to dig in.
“Actually, he can be a replacement if i get injured. He knows his stuff.” Piped up wild.
“At least that one other Link that can cook.” Chuckled Malon.
Sky dipped his fork into the dish. Scooping up every bit. Before sticking it into his mouth. It was an explosion of flavor and it caused his to tear up a bit. Wind noticed and stopped mid bite.
“You okay?’ Ask the young sailor.
The sky loft Ian nodded and smiled. “It like home.”
The rancher smiled and took his first bite, pleased he was able to bring some joy to the somber mood the youth had been in earlier.
“It’s comfort.” He replied to sky.
“Thank you.” Replied sky.

over the horizon is the great machine of death
a/n: chapter 212 gutted me, like I'm sure it did to many others. I wrote this immediately after, but had to wait for further chapters to make sure that my guesses were mostly correct. I don't think gege will kill maki (... knock on wood. knocking on so much wood, going to redwood forest to kiss a blessedly tall tree), so I decided not to wait any longer. This piece is consistent with the rest of the "my younger years" fic chain. Title comes from The Curtain
summary: you knew that there was nothing you could do, but there really is nothing you can do. ghosts will keep pealing away the last pieces that matter
c/w: spoilers, the whole thing is spoilers, parent-child relationship between reader and the fushiguro siblings
Tumblr media
"Hello?"
Up north, it is already cold. Over the blue slate cliffs, grey clouds press down like the palm of god. Hello rises up to meet them, dissipating all too quickly.
You know who it is. You hope - no you wish because what good is hope for a sorcerer - for good news while hello drifts in the air. Too many other options wait for their dark names to be spoken out loud.
Maki is very quiet on the end of the line.
In that long moment, everything is alright.
"We lost Megumi."
She says it without inflection, and the first thing you think of is her sister. Nothing would be able to compare to losing the other half of yourself, the person who had been with you for the entire arch of your life.
"What to you mean 'lost'?"
It's a stupid question. You've gotten this call before. Lost means gone means dead, but lost also means slipped out of your pocket, set somewhere out of sight, don't know where it went, might find it between the couch cushions later.
Megumi was once that small. Satoru had sat on him, muffling his furious outrage, pretending not to know where he was when you tried to ask Megumi what he wanted to wear on his weekend field trip. Tsumiki had played along, told you his bags were already packed. You'd found out from the pictures that Satoru had kept you from finding a kumamon bucket hat, little black ears poking from the brim. Megumi wore it and a put upon expression in almost every photo from the trip.
Take your lives
Had they encountered... the colonies weren't impossible to enter but surely the thing wearing stolen skin wouldn't risk joining the cull. And together he and Yuuji should be able to handle a special grade curse. Megumi had mentioned the bridge in an abbreviated text and the students' mission reports said the rest.
He would only have refused to listen if Tsumiki was...
"Whe-"
"It was Sukuna." Maki's voice carries the edges of anger.
"What happened to Yuuji?" you ask, incredulous. He'd had it under control, even at three quarters cursed.
"He's fine."
"How can he be fine? Maki, what happened?"
And she tells you, stopping and starting again as she finds the words. You imagine you hear a shiver in her voice to match the roar and creak of ice as it springs up from nothing, dries out the city for three blocks around the epicenter.
What had been the last thing you'd said to him?
You'd said a lot over the years. For all of Megumi's resistance to being burdened by others he took on a lot. There had been a time when you thought he didn't like you talking, but when you had fallen silent for too long, he would ask some question or press close to add his hands to yours in whatever you were doing. Always afraid to ask for too much.
"Tsumiki is lost too?" you ask, even though you already know the answer.
His sister was possibly the only person in the world for whom Megumi would first think to live.
There's a murmured interlude on the other side of the phone. You force your feet to move, take you further up the slope, keeping the crash of the ocean in your ears. You can't blunder about blindly. The boundaries out here cut cell signal as easily as they do perception. No amount of boosting the bricky satellite phone's capabilities is going to fix that.
"She's one of the reincarnated players now," Maki says, and it takes a great of amount of self control not to break something or scream into the cold sea-salted wind.
Tsumiki who had never been sure if she wanted magic to be real or not, who let her brother go out with someone who was barely an adult, whom she forced herself to trust even when her brother returned with dull eyes and slumped shoulders. Tsumiki who wanted to believe that there was good in the world anyways, that maybe there was something sacred and precious about a world that would have thrown her away without a thought, the strongest of you all for keeping her heart alive.
"Are you still in--?"
"Yeah." You're trembling, insides gone shaky and cold. Distantly, you know this is shock and that you should get moving before Maki hears it. "I have a meeting with one of their captains in the morning, if I can make it in time."
Hokkaido is peaceful, readying itself for winter. In the morning, frost crackled across the windows of the wheezing, ancient car you bought for cash off some farmer at the coast. You had to abandon the car to walk the rest of the way to the barrier, but you were reassured by some bowing attendant, who had taken the keys with as much reverence as if they belonged to the seven geared monstrosity Satoru had bought for you, that the antique you'd arrived in would be well cared for as you braved the Ainu trials.
"Good luck," Mai says gravely.
"You too," you say quietly.
You hope that somewhere on the other side, Yuuji can hear you. You don't know what comes next for them, the plan insofar blown beyond hell, but they will need it when they go to bring the bodies back.
You share another long silence with her. You'd looked forward to teaching her. Only age and experience and the fading words of someone long gone had given you anything she didn't already have, but you'd looked forward to seeing her only get better, to tallying the matches between her and Yuuta and seeing if you could find Toge something that suited his gentle hands.
You'd looked forward to a lot of things.
The line goes dead with a tiny click.
One leaden step after another, you turn away from the cliffs.
It's too much. Surely all of this is more than one person will have to bear in their lifetime. No wonder sorcerers die young.
The giggle that escapes your mouth has you wobbling sideways, hand going to the rough bark of a tall pine spearing upwards. Its stripped trunk creaks higher above you. If you wanted, you could pull that movement through the trunk and shatter the whole thing from the crown to roots.
You grip your head, fingers tight against your scalp, heel of your palm pressed to your temple. Get it together. But all you can see are the kids, yours and not yours - bright eyed weekends at cafes and book shops with Tsumiki, sharing late evening teas with Megumi while he honed the focus needed to maintain his summons, their subdued delight when Satoru swung them high in his arms, the tug of a hand at your sleeve when you changed a record on the turntable.
The shaking in your body has to go somewhere and with your legs feeling weak, the tremors escape through your mouth, pilling together until they escape as an unstoppable laugh. Your other hand comes up to grip your head too, as though to keep your mind contained inside.
For the first time since that single terrible dream, you want Satoru out of the box, if only so he could lay eyes on Megumi and Tsumiki and tell you if there was any hope left at all. But just as quickly, you are again you're glad he's not, because he'd take it on himself to look their familiar bodies in the eye and lay them to rest.
Laughter is a poor wrapper for such a bitter pastille, but you can't seem to stop throwing it out in plumes of steam.
If you had been born without your curse, you'd never know about any of this at all. Even losing it all now to a sorcerer's inevitable end, from a place so far you cannot even imagine doing more than you already are, you should be grateful, you are grateful, that this was yours for even a moment.
You are your anger, and that empty, echoing, hollow place inside of you seems only to grow further with every gasping howl. Something worse is cracking loose. Your eyes sting with it.
There is no other world where you do not lose them. There is only this, and the sudden empty void where that boy and that girl, who you had once helped raise, have finally met their worse than normal ends.
Somehow, that thought is what is most unbearable, bad enough to cut sound from your throat.
Even though you want so badly for it to be possible (and so far away from where it happened maybe you can be allowed to want, just for a moment), even Satoru had said the odds of another vessel like Yuuji were incredibly slim, once in a thousand years slim.
If there was any single miracle in the world, it would bring back Fushiguro Megumi. But for all its magic, neither world he belonged to had ever trafficked much in miracles.
