With 2022 well underway, we are already seeing ripples across the interior design industry. These interior design trends are rising to power, and we predict they will dominate in 2022. Bold Colours and Striking Patterns

While modern and minimalist design styles encourage the use of neutral or monochromatic colour palettes, there is an emerging trend of committing to bolder and more striking colours in home interior design. By choosing to decorate with stronger colours, you can influence the mood of your home and lifestyle. 

Colour psychology examines how different colours inherently activate different parts of the brain or appeal to different personality types. Find out what colours you are drawn to, and create a specific colour palette for each room with the help of a professional interior design specialist. You can either repaint your walls or change up the room’s flooring for a full overhaul, but there is an easier way. Refinishing an accent wall, hanging some art, or adding a vividly coloured piece of furniture are all simple ways to change a room’s colour scape and mood.

People are adding dwarf varieties of fruit trees to balconies or high-ceilinged rooms, to provide access to fresh food or citrus garnishes. It is luxurious to mix an after-work cocktail with a twist of fresh lime, grown right in your home. 

Design style archetypes like the tropical style are going to dominate in 2022, thanks to their inclusion of large jungle plants such as monstera deliciosa. If you want to create a more relaxing environment, even some small hanging plants or delicate orchids could brighten up your room. 

Antiques and Vintage Decor

While design trends fluctuate rapidly in our ever-changing world, some styles are truly timeless. By using vintage or retro-style decorations, you can tap into these classic decorative elements or relive your favourite era. There are also countless benefits to cultivating your own collection of antiques, that go beyond their surface-level beauty. 

While style is timeless, fashion is cyclical. Many things that were fashionable or trendy in the 1970s and 1980s are becoming quite popular again in the 2020s. In particular, people are seeking out 80s classics like the Caprani Lamp and Cesca Chair. Finding objects and furniture from that era can be tricky, because the 1980s were rampant with disposable fashion and high consumerism. However, if you are able to find genuine articles of that era, your home will be tasteful  from the past. 

You can also combine antiques from any time period, matching them based on colour scheme or style motifs. Eclectic combinations from around the world will make your home stand out as a sophisticated, story-filled place.

Smart Home Technology

Integrating smart home technology into the architecture and construction of a home is going to be a huge trend in 2022. High End homes will leverage new technology to make life easier for the occupants. Voice command control centres have become a natural part of many homes, but add-ons and compatible appliances will become even more accessible this year. 

While many smart home technologies are geared towards entertainment like smart TVs and music players, there are plenty of ways to increase a home’s efficiency or your quality of life. My automating functions like lighting, curtains, and the thermostat, your home can adjust to its own temperature and lighting as the weather and time changes. Smart lighting can even automatically turn on or off as you walk throughout the house. 

Security systems including cloud-based cameras and sensors allow you to monitor your home from anywhere, while giving access to anyone who needs it. Automated lawn care or pet care systems can water plants or feed your dog, freeing up valuable time each day. We have only begun to see some of smart home technology’s true potential, but integrating it into your home in 2022 will have massive benefits.

One very special anniversary coming soon...

Nearly ten years ago, at the end of November and into early December 2012, I joined my first group RP on Tumblr. The character I created for that RP? 

Daniel Walden.

It’s been on and off for me on Tumblr since that time, but ever since I started as an indie blog Daniel has been with me. He’s never once left my indie blogs nor have I ever lost muse for him. 

In all that time, Daniel has been married and divorced. He’s cheated and been cheated on. He’s had husbands and wives, boyfriends and girlfriends, casual flings and messy affairs. He’s been everything sexually from a dominant sugar daddy through to a femme domme submissive and there’s very little that he hasn’t tried over time.

A skilled political consultant from a wealthy, Kennedy-esque family by canon bio, Daniel has also been the President of the United States, the Mayor of New York, a US Senator and the White House Chief of Staff in various political AUs. He’s also been a covert crime boss, a CIA agent, a KGB spy, a rockstar, a treasure hunting fixer and a male model in numerous other AUs too. 

He’s been the starting point for various other muses of mine, not least children from ships of his that have become muses of mine in their own right (Daniel Jr, Cesca) and other muses past and present who have borne the name Walden too (Cormac, David). 

Every long-standing partner of mine has had at least one or two ships with Daniel over time, and a great many other partners who are either now gone or who were fleeting have also had ships with him too. I don’t have the numbers to hand but I know full well he is the muse who I’ve had the most ships with and who I’ll have had the most threads with over time as well. 

A big part of my consistent muse for Daniel has been the FC himself, and ironically Seb wasn’t my first choice for the role. It was Ryan Gosling but the RPC had him on reserve and so I opted for Seb, then best known for Gossip Girl and Political Animals. As Seb’s career has grown with Marvel and his other projects over the last ten years, so too have I felt Daniel grow aesthetically as well as in personality and history too. 

Reflecting on this milestone, I’m wonderfully proud of this character who has stuck with me for so long and grown so much since that short-lived RP way back in 2012 and early 2013. I can’t put an end date on when I’ll eventually be too busy or too lacking in muse for indie RP, but until the end I know Daniel Walden will be with me, and to be quite honest even beyond that end point too!

Over the next few weeks, I’ll be doing some anniversary starter calls, opens and musings for Daniel, but as a starter piece I wanted to note this milestone and properly express my pride and affection for this special first of characters of mine.

A short collection of iconic chairs, in chronological order.

Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Hill House Chair, 1902 Decorative chair specifically designed for the bedroom of the Hill House (Charles and Margaret Machintosh; Helensburgh, Scotland, 1904). The chair, made of solid ash wood, painted in black, was inspired by Japanese craft and the grid on the top became Mackintosh’s design signature.

Frank Lloyd Wright, Peacock Chair, 1921 Oak side chair used throughout the Imperial Hotel (Frank Lloyd Wright; Tokyo, Japan, 1923).

Marcel Breuer & Marcel Bouvier, Wassily Chair, 1925 Armchair manufactured by Thonet, a German-Austrian company. Its bent steel tube frame, inspired by bicycles construction, and taut Eisengarn fabric revolutionized the furniture industry because of their materials, manufacturing process and aesthetics.

Eileen Gray, Bibendum, 1926 Tubular steel and leather armchair, inspired by the “Bibendum” Michelin Man and presented as a playful “feminist” response to Le Corbusier’s Grand Confort armchair.

Marcel Breuer, Cesca Chair, 1928 Breuer chose again the tubular steel bending technology used in bicycles, in order to achieve standardization and mass production. It was combined with wooven cane and beech wood and became one of the most common chairs of the XXth century.

Lilly Reich & Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe, Barcelona Chair, 1929 Designed for the German Pavillion at the International Exposition of 1929 (Mies Van Der Rohe; Barcelona, Spain; 1929) for the Spanish royalty to oversee the ceremony.

Alvar Aalto, Chair 69, 1935 The chair resulted from experiments with solid bent wood which helped create the L-shape, seen on the legs of the chair and applied to a series of other pieces of the same collection. The chair’s structure is made of solid Finnish birch.

Antoni Bonet & Juan Kurchan & Jorge Ferrari Hardoy, BKF Chair, 1938 A chair consisting of thin folded iron bars and a leather seat, which allows for various relaxed sitting position. The chair became an icon of Argentine design.

Eero Saarinen, Tulip Chair, 1956 A plastic chair designed for the Knoll company as part of the Pedestal Collection, which explored plastic furniture, devoid of the traditional legs.

Francesca “Cesca” Howl

The older daughter. Cesca inherited her father’s tough delinquent aesthetic and rough personality. She’s the type that doesn’t back down easily from a fight, and even seems to look forward to them. She’s very confident in her strength and even cocky at times, but is never malicious to others, unless they are looking to mess with her. 

She’s a wolf beastman just like her father, and she’s noted to have a very fine sense of smell. Since her nose is so sensitive she generally dislikes strong odours or aromas, especially that of her mother’s perfumes. Jack mentioned once that it’s even more sensitive than his. 

She is really into Magical Wheels thanks to her uncles Deuce and Epel. She’s been riding one ever since she was young and really enjoys looking after her bike. Her days off are mostly spent fixing and repairing it, or going on rides with her gang of girls. Rosa was initially skeptical about allowing her on what she deemed a “dangerous machine” but ultimately relented since it was clear she couldn’t change her mind. She’s still somewhat upset that Cesca will go on long rides on her bike and come home late.

She gets along better with her father since they’re both very active and don’t mind rough play. Jack taught both his kids how to fight (in self defense) but Cesca is definitely the one who’s better at it. Since she’s pretty tall too (~183 cm) it gives a bit of an advantage over her opponent. She definitely enjoys training with her dad.

She calls Rosa “mom” and Jack “old man”. She likes teasing her younger brother, but cares for him deeply. She does have more faith in him than both their parents and doesn’t think Colt will have problems looking after himself. 

She goes by “Cesca” and rarely uses her full name, because she thinks the nickname is cooler.

She’s a natural leader, comfortable in an Alpha position and is the one who is in charge of the biker gang she’s part of. The girls in her group call her Big Sis and are on friendly terms with her parents too. 

She’s a student at Walpurga Nacht Academy and eventually becomes the Prefect of Monarchia during her third year. Her mother would have preferred her to go to Rosenhex, but Cesca says the dorm is too structured for her. She prefers the wild atmosphere over at the dorm specializing in beast taming.

She’s a very sociable person and enjoys interacting with others. She doesn’t like to stand still, and is always on the move trying to find something fun to do. 

She has a strong sense of justice just like her dad, and coupled with her mother’s passion it makes for an explosive combination sometimes. In school she would often be the one who made sure kids in her class weren’t bullied, her height and tough appearance meaning that other people would often be intimidated by her.

The leather jacket she’s always wearing was a gift from her gang that she treasures deeply.  

Colt Howl

The younger son. Unlike his sister, he tends to be more quiet and withdrawn, rarely jumping into conversations with others and just preferring to blend in the background. It’s not out of any sense of dissatisfaction with life, however. Colt just simply likes going about things at his own pace and undisturbed by others. He’s got a very mellow kind of personality that makes him look like a loner, but in fact he doesn’t mind being approached by others.

He’s inherited his father’s love for cacti and looks after quite a few of his own. They’re very well taken care of, and even Jack is impressed by his skill with them. He and Colt usually spend their father-son bonding time looking after the cacti in silence since neither is very talkative.

His tall figure (~201 cm) and somewhat intimidating appearance make him a frequent target for bullies who want to prove how tough they are by beating him up. However, nobody has managed to do that yet. Though he possesses a lot of strength, Colt generally holds back when fighting since he knows he could easily hurt his enemies, but doesn’t want to cause anybody pain. He lives by a pacifist mantra, and thus generally just hates fighting.

He’s a momma’s boy, and likes to be doted upon by Rosa. His mother is more bubbly and affectionate than his dad so he usually seeks her out when he wants to be comforted. He’s more open with her as a result, since she’s also more understanding about his dislike for prolonged sessions of exercise. 

Jack is often worried that his son isn’t able to defend himself against bullies and delinquents so he wants to train him to become as proficient as his sister. Colt doesn’t really like the idea and would rather that his father didn’t be so concerned about it. He can look after himself fairly well, and would prefer to spend their time together gardening.

He gets along well with his sister even though they are complete opposites and appreciates that she has so much faith in his ability to fend for himself.

He’s a student at Night Raven College and a member of Heartslaybyul. It surprised Jack that he got into that particular dorm, but given that Colt tends to be pretty straight-laced it was not that unexpected. 

He’s a bit of a cinephile and likes to watch movies with his mother and comment on them.   

General Info

They have them when they’re about 20-21, simply because as Jack says, wolf beastman have a soulmate so when they know it’s them, they don’t mind making that step. They have a daughter and a son, and decided to stop there since Rosa wanted to return to her acting career.

They have family movie nights where they usually watch action movies together. Rosa and Cesca will sometimes ask that they watch bad flicks to make fun of them, but Jack doesn’t really get the appeal. Colt usually falls asleep at some point during the movie.

The family likes to eat meat more than anything, and it drives health nut Rosa crazy. She and Jack used to switch between who made dinner, but she’d always complain he cooked too much meat during his turns. When the kids became teenagers they also had to join in. As expected of them they just did a lot of meat dishes like their father. 

The family has an active exercise program and often goes hiking together. Cesca loves it, but Colt isn’t a big fan of it at all. He’d rather just rest at home or look after his cacti.

I went to the library and researched the Bauhaus.

The Bauhaus was a German art school operational between 1919 and 1933 with a focus on fine art and craft. It because famous for its approach to design, striving to combine mass production and functionality with individuality and aesthetic quality.

The Bauhaus was founded by architect Walter Gropius in Weimar, who's aim was to create a "comprehensive artwork" (Gesamkunstwerk) in which all the arts would eventually be brought together. The Bauhaus style went on to become one of the most influential currents in modernist architecture and design, art, graphic design, typography, interior design and industrial design.

The Bauhaus had prominent figures in art and design as staff at various points: Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Marcel Breuer, László Moholy-Nagy etc.

The Bauhaus closed in 1933 under pressure from the Nazi regime, having been painted as a centre of communist intellectualism. The staff continued to spread their idealistic precepts as the emigrated from Germany.

The Bauhaus style tends to feature simple geometric forms and primary colours. Chrome metal pipes with curved cornerswere often used in furniture, namely the Cesca chair by Marcel Breuer (which I saw at the Design Museum).

The Bauhaus is relevant to my project because I am looking at the relationship between functionality and complexity in design and architecture. The Bauhaus asked fundamental questions about craftsmanship versus mass production, the relationship of usefulness and beauty, the practical purpose of formal beauty in a commonplace object, and whether or not a single proper form could exist.
