6. My favorite character

I regret to say that. Vyce is maybe possibly my favorite. Cerya is definitely a close second but there is something wrong with my brain and whenever I see a character make absolutely undeniably horrible decisions many times in a row I get heart eyes. I just think he's neat!!! And his whole terrible relationship with Denam compels me. Whatever those guys have going on is insane and also really funny <3

Honorable mention to all the Phoraena sisters though, I'm really enjoying how often they get to interact + how their stories build on each other. I cannot remember how far I've gotten in posting my little screenshots yet, but I did get to recruit Sherri a while ago and got that scene where Olivya and Denam kinda talk her down. It's really fun to see the four of them comfort/interact with/argue with each other with everything that's going on--I feel like it's uncommon to see sibling dynamics with more than two siblings let alone four, so it's fun to see tactics ogre tackle that

19. Favorite headcanon

Speaking of the phoraena sisters!!!! Ever since I picked up Sherri my brain's been trying to piece together how exactly all of them would interact with each other so now I've got this fun convoluted little web which I'm now going to inflict upon the world.

Mostly my take is that I think Cerya + Cistina have really similar personalities (really opinionated + stubborn) while Sherri + Olivya are really similar in a different way (more laid-back, tend to be more passive-aggressive than outright aggressive), and that Cerya + Sherri / Cistina + Olivya would tend to be a little more fond of each other just because they're closer in age.

I also think if they were going to have a vote of "sister most likely to defect to the Bakram army and try to kidnap our dad" it probably would have been in order: Cistina, Cerya, Sherri, Olivya, so it would have been pretty out there when Sherri was the one to go nuts after their mom died. "Most likely to start her own rebel army" was definitely Cerya though. 100% all of them saw that coming and actively made plans around it

Just me procrastinating from what is turning out to be a double chapter release for my small audience of Depths of Promises Sworn patrons.

Cerya was replaced with the art that Nevarii showed me and inspired the Seraph, (The angel from Deluded Hearts that is quite fond of a trans girl blood mage.) Mostly because I am not far enough to even consider commissioning art of anyone from Deluded Hearts yet.

Who knew unpacking my religious trauma would be less fun than exploring my relationship with games like DnD? I actually have fun memories of the latter of the two.

That and Jill demands I actually research the effects of blood loss. And reference my relationship w/ my extended family.

Ayre from Depths of Promises Sworn does not give a shit if they take a spear to the heart. They're just gonna replace any lost blood with yours. Much easier to write. It helps that I've already done a fuck ton of research on the kinds of authoritarian/eugenics impulses in that story.

My biggest regret for this tarot set is that I didn't get to fit my two favs Balxephon and Andoras anywhere. Balxephon would have been a sick Hierophant, I just felt Ronwey/Leonar and the role they play especially in regard to the CH1 finale and route split was a more coherent fit. And Andoras would have been great as The Hanged Man but he had no chance in a game where Vyce exists.

i think we don't talk about how gentle pope is? from the first day when you decide to come treasure hunting with pope, he notices the little things. he noticed how your hands seem to shake every single time things start to get a little dangerous, or how your doe eyes always fixated on him before you went to sleep snuggled at his side.

pope noticed how you rubbed your thumbs on his with a small smile on your face, but he especially noticed how you listened to him. your head would be turned, almost attuned to everything he was saying. it didn't matter if someone wasn't listening, you always had your head perched near, bambi eyes blinking.

your gentle voice would get drowned out in passionate outbursts with the pogue's but he valued your opinion more than anything. but what he would never forget is how he knows what's more than what you can handle. from day one you've always begged to be near pope, to go with him no matter what—and for gods sake to know if he was safe or not.

you needed to be close, to have that skin to skin contact. sometimes when things got tough in season four, all you would do was get in his lap. jj and john b would get all quiet, seeing you screw your eyes shut and try to squeeze yourself near pope. he welcomed it too, stroking your hair gently, daring to glare at anyone who looked badly at you.

the two of you were a team.

I beat (as in got the credits to roll) TOR! Never did actually try to do the full Palace of the Dead bc I was starting to get kinda burnt out and just wanted to see the game's ending. Which is to say that, like, I see Coda is Right There, but I'll be taking a break to play Live A Live for a bit (which I got as an early birthday present last month and my birthday was at the beginning of this month, so it's just been sitting there unopened and sad, and I really wanna play Live A Live).

But, despite getting a bit burned out, I liked the story I got! Very curious about the other routes and the Coda post-game stuff. More thoughts (ft. spoilers) under the cut.

WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT FINAL BATTLE

I mean, no one died, I was very close to having to restart to make sure no one died though, but like, no one died so I didn't but what the fresh hell? They could have AT LEAST restored my units when Dorgaula evolved? Aaaaaa (thank goodness I brought the generic witch w/ light magic who was originally a cleric I recruited specifically bc I didn't have any light-based mages, and thank goodness Dorgalua finally started ignoring her so she could chip off 150-200 HP at a time consistently).

But I do like that the final battle was challenging, even if it had me mentally screaming. (Also I really need to stop beating games when I'm not feeling well so I an more fully savor my victories, but I've been feeling icky all day, rip).

Although, I have to say, not the final boss I was expecting? This is the most ridiculous final boss the game could have had to me like, here's this heart-wrenching tale of the woes and sorrows of war where almost every choice feels like a bad one, and the few good ones usually lead to people dying anyhow, and then it's like, "actually, the king whose death set off all this war and tragedy was just in hell trying to revive his dead family and Got Stuck Trying To Get Back, now you have to fight him before he levels the world for funsies" like what? THAT'S how we're finishing this tale? With a diablo ex machina? Absolutely hilarious to me.

What a weird way to end the main story though, like? I never even got to fight Lanselot (dark knight) and Balxephon (I was so looking forward to siccing Hobyrim on Balxephon). And I didn't even see epilogues for like, Cerya and Cistina, which is? Good on Olivya for trying to pursue Denam, I don't know if he feels the same, but you go girl, congrats on being the only one of your sisters to get an epilogue.

But overall I did enjoy the story. Denam kinda fucking off to Xenobia for a bit seemed satisfying like, he really did become a rock by the side of the road like his dad wanted. I'm sure Catiua will be fine ruling (I mean, according to the epilogue she's fine, but girl, you made some choices early game...)

I did accidentally (in my quest to try and find the answer to something else) find out Cressida is at least recruitable, but I'm thinking I needed to actually complete PotD for that, since Nybeth's arc was tied to that dungeon, so uh, sorry for missing you Cressida, you seemed really cool. Actually, now that I've at least beat one main route blind, I'm not as worried about looking up guides and spoilers, so it'll be interesting to see how many characters I missed recruiting, and who is can be recruited via other routes. I'm also really curious about how loyalty scales, since some of my generic recruits had the hilarious loyalty shift from "hates your guts" to "thinks you're a worthy leader and will follow you into the depths of hell (literally)" in the span, sometimes, of a single battle.

Anyhow, really loved TOR, will definitely get back into it to check out Coda and other routes and stuff, just...not right away. I do need a little break. But it was SO fun!

which tactics ogre characters would have cats as pets, and which ones would have dogs?

Unfortunately I've already pondered this question for several characters so I will place them in different categories: in the dichotomy of cats vs dogs and outside of it for a myriad of reasons ranging from (simply prefers other animals or "would kick puppies and cuts a cat's whiskers" type). I only wanted to list the ones I had strong opinions about but then I realized there were so many that I might as well list the entire cast.

Cats:

Catiua: It's in the name 😩 Catiua loves cats because she thinks they're misunderstood creatures, she needs one specifically that's just a nasty little to anyone but her so she can make excuses for their behaviour. Maybe Catiua is a little bit of a cat herself... Beside why would she need a dog when she has Vyce.

Prancet: He is the local stray cats of Golyat feeder but don't be mistaken: he loves dogs nonetheless.

Lanselot Tartaros: Controversial take that I am completely right about but Lanselot is a cat person. I don't see him interested in taking care of a pet but he'd believe that all cats are low-maintenance animals, and would have a cat (but only if they're actually low-maintenance). Giving them a chin scritch every now and then is as much love as he'd manage to show.

Donnalto: Proud owner of the countless cats his children have insisted on adopting across the years.

Olivya: She feeds stray kittens scraps daily, she also traps and rehomes feral cat like it's a hobby.

Hobyrim: As much as I believe that he has had many dogs growing up, and that he truly does like dogs, in his heart... He knows he's a cat person.

Sherri: She's a cat person, no other animal will do. But she also won't let the cat climb on her lap because she doesn't like that the hair sticks to her clothes. She likes (not loves) cats, at a distance.

Xaebos: Persian cat person

Warren: This is a cat-man. He has a cat back in Xenobia, I'm sure of it.

Gildas: Cat person in dog person disguise

Dogs:

Vyce: The game doesn't place all these canine words for fun, he is a dog person. He could use a pet he can do plenty with like going on a long jog with, and playing enthusiastically with. Plus I think he needs to argue with Catiua about how dogs are much better than cats while Denam spaces out for his own well-being. That being said, I do believe Vyce doesn't hate cats, he only pretends otherwise to argue with Catiua. He likes them just fine.

Jeunan: Extremely dog person. In a modern AU, you'd see this man in your local park at 7:30am, 11:45am, 2:45m, 5:30pm and 8:45pm diligently walking his dog (dreamy sigh)

Oz: Everything about Oz screams "cat" me (he's my little meow meow for a start) but Oz absolutely is the type of person who'd own the most impeccable purebred hunting dogs. Not that he would take care of them (he has servants for this, of course). He would mostly enjoy the prestige of having them. Maybe this doesn't make him someone who loves dog but rather sees them as a display of wealth... Let's say he's a nuanced dog person.

Balxephon: Unsufferable owner of only the most award-winning purebred competition dog. He scoffs at lowly strays. That's one more thing for him and Oz to bond over.

Volaq: To Volaq, dogs are the model of loyalty. And Volaq values loyalty above all else (whatever definition of this he may have). So he's a proud dog person.

Ravness: I have no argument to back up my belief she's a dog person. It's just a vibe.

Lanselot Hamilton: is a dog person, I will accept no criticism. (Plus he is Tartaros' narrative foil after all...)

Balbatos: The worst kind of dog owner.

Cerya: BIG dog kind of person. Small dogs will not do, she will not aknowledge their existence. No, Cerya needs the greatest of hounds, the most imposing beast.

Cistina: Small dog kind of person and will not let her big sister know.

Mirdyn: Dog person in cat person disguise

Hektor: Proud dog person.

Neither a dog nor a cat person... but a third option entirely:

Denam: Denam is ambivalent on the matter. He'd probably have both at the same time. (all things remain balanced within the Golyat trio)

Ganpp: Canonly a bird person. In fact Ganpp is one of the only two Tactics Ogre character who canonly loves any animal at all.

Ocionne: She is the second character who canonly loves any animal at all. Not a cat person, not a dog person, not even a bird person... A reptile person this time (dragons count as such for the purpose of this post).

Dorgalua: The game implies he may very well be a bird person.

Canopus: Bird person (ah). He will never admit to it because people (Gildas) will run the joke into the ground.

Dievold & Oelias: I am sure they are both animal lovers. I think Oelias deserves to have a pet like a macaw who will stay with her for a very long time... 😶

Barbas & Martym: These two HATE animals.

Ronwey: He doesn't hate animals. He simply does not like them.

Brantyn: After debating Brantyn being a cat person, then debating Brantyn being a dog person, I have concluded that he isn't interested in animals.

Ozma: I am ambivalent about Ozma, she is either a cat person or a dog person, not both at once, not anything else. I can see Ozma loving her beautiful angora cat and spoiling her like no one else. Unlike Balxephon and Oz, the cat would even be allowed on the bed. On the other hand, Ozma could be the most dedicated dog-owner of all time and I would believe it. She's a riddle.

Leonar: This is a Horse Girl.

Andoras: In my heart, Andoras is a cat person... I don't have any justifications for this, it's just based on a vibe. Realistically, I think he'd be outside of the dichotomy. Maybe he's a fish or a reptile kind of person.

Iuria: She loves all animals but clearly... Iuria loves fish the most.

Azelstan: Dolphins and whales connoisseur.

Cressida: Insects. Most specifically: moths.

Xapan: Cannot be trusted with animals.

Nybeth: I will -personally- take any pet away from him, just like I will take his children away from him.

Deneb: You might be inclined to think that Deneb is a cat person because... Well, witch aesthetics. But the truth is... Deneb is a reptile kind of person. Which is why you have to sell her so many. How she shows her love and if it's beneficial to the reptile is another matter entirely.

Arycelle: She needs someone loyal who won't lie to her and use her... So any animal will do, I suppose.

Bayin, Folcurt, Mannaflora, Vernotta, Lindl, Rudlum, and any other minor villain and character I may be forgetting atm: Insufficient data to be categorized (although my partner is protesting, stating that Folcurt is a dog person and I'm inclined to go along with this).
