A new viewpoint on antlers reveals the evolutionary history of deer (Cervidae, Mammalia)
fullview recommended!
something i've wanted to do for a while now. i've scoured the internet for something like this and can't find anything that compares all the different types of antlers together. except one recent study on their evolution, which is also very interesting on its own! i simplified it to provide a visual reference, while still trying to be scientifically accurate. some things differ between this and trophy scoring terminology like where the beam is and whatnot, so if something looks weird that's why.
small additional note, this study and others provide a lot of evidence that eld's deer should be in their own genus as it doesn't appear similar enough to barasingha and schomburgk's deer. however this doesn't seem to be adapted anywhere yet, so they're still in Rucervus for this guide.

Sharpie-Sized Baby at Topeka Zoo
With legs about the size of pencils, adult Chevrotains weigh only 10-13 pounds.  Males have small curved tusks.  This species is sometimes called the Mouse Deer, though they are not true deer.
These ungulates are native to Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, and Malaysia, where they dwell in forests and feed on fruit and berries.  Threats from overhunting and deforestation have caused this species to decline in the wild.

So I learned something a while back that I’m surprised I didn’t learn earlier:
Pyrography fades considerably in even bright indoor lighting: specifically, gallery lighting. Doesn’t even need to be sunlight, I guess any intense sunlight within the span of a year will drastically lighten the burned in marks.
So this piece suffered after its time on display, and it was only today that I set about trying to remedy it by going back in and darkening the tones and deepening the outlines. The final resting place of this piece will have to be a more dimly lit wall or corner until I can think of some good archival method that won’t crack or discolor over time.
The top of the piece has yet to be touched; you can see the contrast with where I’ve been working in the middle/bottom.

The Florish Deer is one of the deer species native to Optera. It is a reddish deer of medium height. It's tail is about 2 feet long and has a lighter tip that it uses to signal danger to it's herd. It's antlers are shed and regrown annually, and grow into a single long curve, with a trio of spikes forming an eye guard.
They prefer open forests, where they form herds of 10-25 members. Most herds are comprised of 1-3 males and the rest females and fawns. They are a playful species and will engage in chasing, play-fighting, and leaping their entire lives.
Florish deer are considered to be the most perfect of prey animals by those who live in Optera. They are plentiful, thrive near human settlements and have a carefree nature. Their bold and blocky coats also resemble the national dress of Optera.
The Beetle God of Community is said to have created florish deer as a gift to his first subjects, so that they would never go without food. Their population collapsed during the Great Famine, but quickly recovered into modern day.
