professor!maul au rambles..
Tumblr media
hey everyone! so i have a lot of ideas and lore surrounding this au so if you wanna read all about it.. click the “keep reading” link!
coruscant/the galaxy itself:
modern coruscant is loosely based off of chicago, illinois (my home state & one of my favorite cities) & a mixture of coruscant in the prequels!
coruscant is an ecumenopolis, meaning that the entire planet is a city!
there are millions of cultures, species, and miniature cities sprawling across the planet
there is no clone war per se, but there are senators, representatives, as well as a chancellor (who is not palpatine)
the republic and separatists still exist as forms of government
the jedi and sith do not exist
a portion of the planet where university of coruscant is located, depends on the status of the college to support its economy
the timeline of the story is in the present
iphones, androids, and other technology exist
everyone drives cars instead of shuttles or transports
speeders do exist, but they’re like motorcycles or motorbikes
however, if you do need to leave the planet, that is when you utilize a ship to get off world
popular brands/pop culture are present, meaning that there are memes, social media platforms, as well as huge brands like amazon, apple, and many more
the campus:
approximately 40,000 students attend university of coruscant
the school colors are: blue, black, with gold, and the mascot is the rare and elusive zillo beast
the founding values: valor, virtue, and victory
it’s almost as old as coruscant, having heavy influences on the beginnings of the planet
it is an undergrad & graduate school
the most popular major is either communications or something in the school of business
average tuition for “in-world” students is around $15,000 (usd)
average tuition for “out-of-world” students is around $20,000 (usd)
when it comes to athletics, it is considered a “division one” school in all areas
many students are at uc due to athletic scholarships
the most popular coffee chain is dunkin donuts and starbucks, and there are locations plastered across the city (with a dunkin & starbucks on campus. yes, they are rivals)
panera, subway, jimmy john’s, papa john’s, dominos, penn station, moe’s southwest girl, chipotle, and other fast food chains are located in campustown, along with many local eateries
there are many local sports bars, the most popular one referred to as ram’s, a pub owned by a ram-like humanoid who loves the students
there are fraternities and sororities. the campus is huge about “greek life”
president palpatine almost banned the frats after a huge hazing scandal was uncovered. (something withe twi’lek frat hazing their incoming freshman with pig feet and marshmallows) however, the college was quick to clear the allegations
as much as palpatine wants to refuse the stereotype, the university of coruscant is known for being a party school
mustafar central college and university of coruscant are huge rivals
there is a building modeled after the jedi temple, it is used as the archives, library, as well as home of a few local coffee shops, the university bookstore, as well as a few offices (like student financial services, tutors, academic excellence, honors college, etc)
athletics include: saber-wielding, gymnastics, volleyball, wrestling, basketball, football, hockey (the wookiees love hockey), rugby, lacrosse, track & field, and so many more
uc prides itself on being the top saber-wielding team in the galaxy
saber-wielding: a sport in which two opponents duel with lightsabers until one is no longer standing, whether it is by default (penalties) or by injury. it is a prestige sport, and extremely exclusive. many athletes in this field start practicing at an early age, some as young as five or six years old.
ahsoka tano was a huge addition to the saber team, as she is currently undefeated (her current run is 69-0, and she is on her way to the oylmpics to compete at a universal level)
there are eighteen residence halls, paired with copious amounts of student housing (apartments, houses, duplexes, & more)
the campustown is the second ranked in the galaxy, bustling with spirit shops, local restaurants, fro-yo cafes, boutiques, as well as bars
prominent faculty:
president sheev palpatine: an old white guy who no one on campus really seems to like, even the professors. he’s extremely adamant about shifting the focus of the university away from it’s core values, which irritates the students and board of trustees. many of the frats terrorize/vandalize his office/statue constantly.
vice president mas amedda: no one really gets a good or bad vibe from him. he just abides by the president’s wishes. however, there have been a few instances in which he snickered at the pranks pulled on his superior
mace windu: the director of athletics. no one really enjoys his presence because he’s an egotistical asshole, but he does well at his job and ensures that athletics don’t outshine the clubs/fine arts
anakin skywalker: the saber team coach. young, brash, and bold, his style of coaching is unlike anyone has ever seen. he tends to not listen to other coaches of different colleges, nor mace windu. but, the team holds a winning record (24-2)
professor qui-gon jinn: the head of the stem department. very passionate about science. many students like him because his greenhouse, in which he is growing copious amounts of pot (maybe he sells, that’s a secret he’ll never tell)
professor obi-wan kenobi: the head of the english department. a wise, sophisticated man. popular with the students because of his easygoing yet forward personality. there are speculations floating around campus that he’s in a deeply involved relationship with a dean of students of sundari university, satine kryze
professor maul: a handsome zabrak in his early thirties. a prominent professor in the psychology department. he’s known to ramble, stand on top of his desk when he’s in a heated lecture, and know how to connect with students. he’s one of the heartthrobs of the campus, but he has no ring on his finger, or shows any notion of dating anyone. students love hearing his stories of his saber-wielding days, as he used to be a d1 athlete in the sport. a mustafar central alumni.
professor savage opress: another zabrak professor, residing in the geology department. he often intimidates students on their first day, scaring them off with his bulky frame (he body builds on the side) and gruff voice. however, he is a sweetheart, who tends to the campus loth-cats and squirrels. a mustafar central almuni.

Jarryd Hayne marries Amellia Bonnici in a secret ceremony on Central Coast
Rugby league star Jarryd Hayne has married his long-term partner Amellia Bonnici in a secret ceremony, just a month after announcing their engagement.
Hayne, 32, and Bonnici, 29, the mother of his daughter Beliviah Ivy, 4, tied the knot at Pullman Magenta Shores resort, on the New South Wales Central Coast, on Tuesday.
In the scorching heat on Australia Day the couple’s service was intimate and low key, with a group of roughly 50 family and friends, including fellow NRL stars, attending.
Hayne wore a creme suit, open white shirt and sunglasses, smiling as he stood under a floral archway waiting for his bride.
Bonnici looked elegant in a white dress and with her hair pulled back to show off her pearl earrings.
Rugby league star Jarryd Hayne has married his long-term partner Amellia Bonnici in a secret ceremony at the Pullman Magenta Shores resort in NSW, just a month after getting engaged
After being together for tumultuous five years, Hayne and Bonnici tied the knot in secret
Hayne checks his phone as he and Bonnici sit on the back of a golf cart on their way to have photos taken
The deeply religious Hayne – who is a former Hillsong regular – chose not to have the ceremony in a church, instead saying their vows beneath a white floral archway in the resort garden

The deeply religious Hayne – who is a former Hillsong regular – chose not to have the ceremony in a church, instead saying their vows beneath a white floral archway.
Those in attendance sat on rows of white wooden chairs spread throughout a grass area in between the resort’s villas.
While the ceremony was shielded from public view, there was no relief from the sun, with temperatures soaring into the mid-30s by mid-afternoon.
Hayne’s mother Jodie, his father Manoa Thompson – himself a former NRL star – and his half-sister Evie Thompson all attended.
Also among the crowd was Hayne’s former Parramatta teammate Tim Mannah.
It is understood only a select number of guests were told about the location prior to the Australia Day wedding.
The remainder of those invited were told to meet at a certain location, where a bus collected and took them to the Pullman resort.
The couple’s decision to tie the knot comes after a relationship full of up and downs.
Hayne and Bonnici only announced their engagement on Australia Day, sharing this photo on Instagram
Hayne opted for all white for his special day, wearing chinos and a white suit jacket, with a shirt and white rose
The newlyweds walked away from the ceremony to enjoy a drink, with Bonnici’s bridesmaid helping to lift up the train of her wedding dress
Hayne’s half-sister Evie Thompson (in orange) joined the newlyweds as they headed off to have photos taken
Guests at the ceremony joined in the relaxed theme of the wedding with their bright coloured dresses
It is understood only a select number of guests were told about the location prior to Tuesday, with the rest being taken by bus to the resort
A large stand of flowers is carried into the ceremony on Tuesday afternoon
Hayne and Bonnici met on Instagram in early 2016 and just a few weeks later she was pregnant.
The footy star had just returned from a highly publicised stint with the San Francisco 49ers in the NFL signed a $1million-a-year deal with the Gold Coast Titans in the NRL.
But while Hayne lived it up in the sunshine, Bonnici stayed at home with her family to look after the couple’s daughter.
Hayne was released by the Gold Coast in late-2017 and returned to Parramatta.
In December that year he was accused of sexual assault in the United States, claims he vehemently denied.
Hayne eventually reached a settlement with his accuser in 2019.
Bonnici has stood by Hayne over a tumultuous few years, including throughout a NSW District Court trial for sexual assault last year (Pictured are the pair walking into Newcastle Court)
Bonnici and Hayne met on Instagram and just a few months later welcomed a daughter, Bri
While Bonnici stood by him the controversies continued to come, and on Grand Final Day in 2018 he allegedly he was accused of sexually assaulting a woman at her home near Newcastle.
He faced a NSW District Court trial in 2020 during which Bonnici stuck by his side on the way into court each day.
The jury were unable to reach after a two-week trial and were discharged. A new trial will be set for 2021.

Olympic Hospitality: Start line in sight for Tokyo as Olympic looms
There were indicators aplenty in 2019 for the next Tokyo Olympic city, but the longstanding concerns about Tokyo's often awful heat again surfaced, bringing headaches for local organizers and governments. The hot summer in Tokyo, it became clear that athlete and viewer welfare issues related to the temperature in the Japanese capital were not going away.
Olympic fans from all over the world are invited to book Olympic 2020 tickets from our online platforms for Olympic Tickets. Olympic Hospitality fans can book Olympic Hospitality from our ticketing marketplace exclusively on discounted prices.
When the IOC observed runners dropping like flies, being agreed off the course and into a makeshift hospital due to the heat and moisture at the women's marathon in Doha, it decided something had to be done to ensure the scenes were not repetitive in the Tokyo Olympic. It is hard to claim a response was not required, given the winner, Kenya's Ruth Chepngetich ran a time more than 15 minutes off her personal best and collapsed while talking to the media after the race.
Tumblr media
"We had to move quickly and we didn't want rumor, we did not want rumor and it was better to come out and say what our plan is," the IOC's Coordination Commission chief John Coates.
The past year also saw some loose ends tied up, most notably the decision to strip the International Boxing Association of its role in overseeing the Tokyo Olympic competition due to governance, finance and leadership issues. The boxing competition and schedule featuring five weight classes for women and eight for men were finally locked. The new National Stadium one of Tokyo Olympic's first major PR calamities were also open ready to go after surmounting anxieties about a probable cost blowout led to a redesign of the games' showpiece venue.
"We have to show the world what Japan is capable of doing, and use the games as a chance to open doors to the country's future" said Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at a service in mid-December to mark the conclusion of the gleaming, wooden-roofed behemoth in central Tokyo.
There are just 210 days to go until the Olympic 2020 Games kick-off at the National Ground with the Tokyo Olympic opening ceremony, but Tokyo may have to weather. Japanese Olympic Committee chief Tsunekazu Takeda officially marched down from his place due to an inquiry into bribery claims linked to Tokyo's sports bid.
The prosecuting attorneys in France are continuing to inspect the case in which they have suspects the Tokyo Olympic bid committee, of which Takeda was president, of paying a consultancy fee that was used as a bribe to win the Olympic 2020 Games.
Tumblr media
Takeda was the JOC's longest-serving president and was due to be chosen for an 11th term when he reconciled, but now he and the organizing committee must wait to see whether French establishments will bring charges for the more than $2 million payment to a Singapore-based consultancy. Most venues are completed or nearing conclusion, with many already tested over. The most important hiccup came when an E. coli spike led to the termination of the Paralympic triathlon swimming leg of a test event in Tokyo Bay.
Organizers responsible heavy rain for the water quality the issue, but the city got a more histrionic taste of the havoc weather can cause when Typhoon Hagibis landed on the Rugby World Cup a little over two months later. One Olympic test occasion was squeezed a BMX cycling struggle at Ariake Urban Sports Park was summarized into one day to beat the impending arrival of the typhoon, a type of eventuality that Olympic organizers will hope they can avoid.
Olympic 2020 supporters can get Olympic Tickets through our trusted online ticketing market place. OlympicTickets2020.com is the most consistent source to book Olympic Packages.

Days Inn® by Wyndham Debuts in New Zealand
HAMILTON, New Zealand, June 6, 2019 /PRNewswire/ — Wyndham Hotels & Resorts, the world’s largest hotel franchising company, has introduced its globally-recognized Days Inn by Wyndham brand to New Zealand with the opening of a new landmark hotel, Days Hotel & Suites by Wyndham Hamilton.
The addition bolsters the Company’s presence in New Zealand and in Hamilton, the region’s fourth most-populous city and a key growth market. Since April 1, 2018, Wyndham has opened 34 total hotels in the South East Asia and Pacific Rim region, three of which carry the Days Inn flag. Globally, the brand has more than 1,700 hotels across 25 countries.
A modern hotel set in a historic 19th-century building on the corner of Hamilton’s Collingwood and Victoria streets, the Days Hotel & Suites by Wyndham Hamilton is owned by the Giarn Family Trust and is currently undergoing significant refurbishments to feature a new lobby bar, restaurant and reception area.
“Days Inn by Wyndham is one of the world’s most recognizable hotel brands bringing warm, inviting and reliable hospitality to everyday travellers across the globe,” said Joon Aun Ooi, president and managing director, Wyndham Hotels & Resorts, South East Asia and Pacific Rim. “Welcoming Days Hotel & Suites by Wyndham Hamilton to this important North Island city, an area where the brand will compete up within the midscale hotel segment, marks a major milestone in our global expansion strategy.
He added, “Hamilton is an established destination for business, but there’s a limited supply of world-class hotel brands in the Central Business District to support the city’s commercial expansion and theatre development. The Giarn Family Trust is an excellent partner and we look forward to elevating Hamilton’s lodging offerings with this latest addition.”
Formerly known as the Sudima Hamilton Hotel, a building dating back to 1876, the now Days Hotel & Suites by Wyndham Hamilton offers 69 guest rooms and suites featuring a full range of amenities, including complimentary Wi-Fi, self-controlled air conditioning and heating, flat screen televisions, and environmentally-friendly bathroom amenities. In addition, the studios and two-bedroom suites are fitted with furnished balconies, allowing guests to soak up the sights and sounds of bustling Victoria Street. The hotel also features private meeting facilities, a lounge, guest laundry facilities and onsite parking.
With its prime downtown location, guests are steps from the Waikato Museum and SKYCITY Hamilton, while Claudelands Park and the city’s conference centre are within a short driving distance. Visitors can also enjoy scenic strolls through the Hamilton Gardens, catch a cricket match at Seddon Park, watch rugby at FMG Stadium Waikato, take in a show at The Meteor Theatre or visit the animals at Hamilton Zoo.
Days Inn by Wyndham is helping guests seize the days, wherever their travels take them. In addition to the Days Inn by Wyndham name, the brand also franchises under the names Days Hotel by Wyndham and Days Hotel & Suites by Wyndham, among others. Across New Zealand, Wyndham now operates a total of ten hotels and resorts in several key destinations, including Auckland, Queenstown, Wanaka, Christchurch, Rotorua and Taipa. Week 3.1 - Wellington Suburbs Research

Te Aro - hub for food lovers, hipster central for wellington, lots of tourists go here because of Cuba Street/Mall. It is an inner city suburb in wellington, not really a family oriented place - mostly students flat in this area as it is between Vic and Massey uni.

Brooklyn  - 3km from CBD. It is a very hilly suburb. This is where Central Park is located, on the edge of Brooklyn, it is the park that separates the suburb from central city. There is also the Brooklyn wind turbines up on Pol Hill where a lot of people love going for a little hike. On the way there you also come across the Brooklyn bunkers. The houses in the Brooklyn area are mostly villas with victorian style architecture. There is around 4,000 residents in the area and the median age was 34 years old.
Karori - it’s a suburb west of the Wellington CBD. In 2013, it was one of NZ’s biggest suburbs with around 14,000 residents. Here you can find Zealandia - an ecosanctuary for NZ native wildlife. There is also Karori Pool where families can enjoy a dip and learn how to swim. There is a shopping centre, library, church and community garden that the community can have access to. This could be a good neighbour to have as target audience as it looks like they have a rich family-based atmosphere.

Oriental Bay - close proximity to the CBD. It’s main attraction is the beach and coastal view of the harbour. This place is buzzing with activity during the summer days. Oriental Bay has just over 1,000 residents. The houses are quite stylish and expensive so the people living in Oriental bay are most likely gonna be older and are loaded when it comes to money.

Island Bay - It is a coastal suburb, south of the CBD. As it is a coastal suburb, there are a lot of surfers, swimmers or people who like to do water sports in this suburb. There are two diving companies that operate in island bay. Shorland Park is a small park by the beach. Each year, there is the Island Bay festival where there is a series of events held by the community that include a swim back to shore from a boat,  parade, street races, teddy bear picnic etc. This can be an ideal location for a classic kiwi bbq. It looks like the community has already made events that has been turned into traditions.

Seatoun - it is southeast of the CBD. The suburb is pretty coastal too, situated at the entrance of the Wellington harbour. One of the more richer areas in Wellington city. They have Seatoun School which is a decile 10 primary school. The suburb has it all from the views, beaches, bays, shopping centre which make sit a popular area for families to settle. Although it is also one of the more expensive suburbs to live in. The median house price is around $730,000.

Berhampore - It is a suburb south of the CBD. It is a small suburb that is surrounded by other suburbs like Newtown, Vogeltown and Island Bay. The residents in berhampore are socio-economically diverse. The houses vary in “quality” where there are between the lower and middle RVs.
Hataitai - It is around 3.5km from the CBD. It is a suburb that links the central city to Wellington Airport. The suburb has two primary schools, a playcentre and kindergarten. The hataitai park has a velodrome, courts and rugby fields, perfect for a sporty family to live in. They also have the badminton hall, bowling club, a medical centre and a few churches.
Newlands - It’s a northern suburb that is 8km from the CBD. The population is just over 7,000 for this suburb. From 1920-50s, the suburb was mostly used as a pig and dairy farm that produced most of Wellington’s dairy supply. The suburb has a supermarket and a new community centre with a library. They also have a number of parks such as Newlands Park, Pinkerton Park, Seton Nossiter Park, Gilberd Bush reserve etc.

Khandallah - Another northern suburb. The area is stated on top of a hill that overlooks the harbour. It has a lot of parkland where three parks make up the reserve. The community has a shopping centre, library, town Hall, recreation centre and park as well as a swimming pool. It seems like a good place for families to settle down, not too far out from the city and has it’s own little shops and services so that you don’t have to go into the CBD.
Johnsonville - Northern suburb from the CBD. The population is around 10,000 during the 2013 census. It is a suburb that  both residential and commercial. It is a self-sufficient suburb with a shopping mall, supermarkets and a library. They have the Keith Spry Pool which is an indoor heated pool with and diving board, toddler pool, spa and sauna. They also has the Alex Moore Park which hosts various sports and a community centre that is used for youth groups, citizens advice bureau etc.
Miramar - It is a southeastern suburb of Wellington. It is the home of Wellington Airport. In 1936 the government purchased a Filmcraft, an independent film company and in the late 1990s Sir Peter Jackson purchased the Film Unit to produce this films. The Lord of the Rings trilogy and King Kong were both filmed in Miramar. The population during the 2006 census for this suburb is 8,334 residents.
Lyall Bay - south of the CBD. It is a popular suburb if you’re a surfer, surf lifesaving, and generally love the water. It’s a small suburb by the Airport, close to the Kilbernie shops. There is a primary school, a Playcentre, bowls club, and a surfs club. This suburb might suit a couple, people who are surfers/into watersports, or that enjoy living by the water.

http://time.com/5248016/tracey-crouch-uk-loneliness-minister/
Tracey Crouch knows what it’s like to feel frighteningly alone. After giving birth to her first child, Freddie, in 2016, the British lawmaker says that despite having a “network of friends, family and a wonderful partner,” she began feeling cut off from the world. It wasn’t a new sensation; Crouch says she also suffered from depression six years earlier, when she first became a member of parliament. It felt like she was “in a very dark place, a very lonely place” she recalls.
Crouch’s experiences may inform her new role as the country’s first Minister for Loneliness, a role created by Prime Minister Theresa May in January. “For far too many people, loneliness is the sad reality of modern life,” May said when announcing the new position. According to a report last year from the Jo Cox Commission on Loneliness, more than 9 million people in Britain—around 14 percent of the population—often or always feel lonely. That costs U.K. employers up to $3.5 billion annually, according to consumer co-operative CO-OP.
Crouch, 42, might be the world’s first minister tasked with addressing this problem, but countries around the world are increasingly examining loneliness—typically defined as the feeling of lacking or losing companionship—as a public health concern. In Japan, lonely deaths among the elderly have a name, Kodokushi. A 2010 survey suggested more than a third of American citizens over the age of 45 feel lonely. Last year, former U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy called loneliness a “growing health epidemic” in a Harvard Business Review essay, citing a study that said social isolation is “associated with a reduction in lifespan similar to that caused by smoking 15 cigarettes a day.”
Speaking to TIME in her Westminster office, littered with rugby balls, cricket bats and a Union Jack flag hung on one wall, Crouch says that since her appointment, she has had meetings with lawmakers from Canada and Sweden who are “looking at us and at how we can perhaps take a lead in helping them tackle isolation.”
May was prompted to create Crouch’s role as part of the legacy of Jo Cox, a lawmaker from the center-left Labour Party who was killed in 2016 by a right-wing extremist during the heat of Britain’s E.U. referendum campaign. Cox became a spirited advocate for helping the lonely as she, like more than half of British parents, felt isolated after the birth of her first child. She set-up a commission—renamed the Jo Cox Commission on Loneliness after her death— to tackle loneliness after witnessing its effects among her constituents in the north of England.
Risk factors for loneliness include “family breakdown, a divorce” or “perhaps the safety net wasn’t there to stop that descent,” Crouch tells TIME. Like other developed countries, the U.K. has largely focused on the elderly when addressing issues of loneliness, but the Jo Cox Commission highlighted how much social isolation cuts across all levels of society. Data shows that in Britain and the U.S., poor, unemployed, disabled and migrant populations tend to suffer most from loneliness and isolation—and typically struggle to access adequate support.
Young people aren’t immune either. The U.K.’s Office for National Statistics (ONS) found that 16 to 24 year-olds reported feeling more lonely than pensioners between the ages of 65 to 74. Technology, like the internet, is seen as a source of isolation for young people, “but at the same time, it can be a solution for the older generation, keeping them connected with family” she says.
Alongside all this is Britain’s exit from the European Union, following a referendum in which 75% of 18 to 24 year olds voted overwhelmingly to remain in the bloc, compared to 62% of over 65-year-olds voting to leave. Does Crouch think this generational cleavage has created a new front for social isolation?
“This [role] has got nothing to do with Brexit” says Crouch, one of a handful of lawmakers to shy from revealing how they voted in the referendum. She concedes that “contempt” between the generations could be “another area of community disconnect… but, I think in terms of loneliness, this is something that’s been happening over many years and it’s just building up.”
The erosion of the nuclear family and a sense of disconnectedness in the workplace are some of the reasons why loneliness has bloomed in recent years, says David McDaid, an Associate Professorial Research Fellow on mental health at the London School of Economics. There are more single-person households in the E.U. than any other household type, which has coincided with “more awareness of loneliness as a issue” he says. Loneliness can also affect those surrounded by a lot of people, for example those in workplaces “where you could be feeling isolated from colleagues or trapped due to your desk-job.”
Ian Harrison photographyTracey Crouch, Minister for Sport and Civil Society, was also appointed the ministerial lead for loneliness in January 2018.
Crouch’s appointment looks to some like a public-relations move rather than a true attempt to tackle loneliness. This is her fourth ministerial brief; she is already the Minister of Sports, Minister of Civil Society and Minister of Gambling, and would not be drawn on how many days she would be able to commit to her new role. “It’s difficult to say because there’s no two days that are the same in politics anyway.”
Her Conservative Party has also been blamed for exacerbating loneliness by gutting social services, which provided struggling mothers relief and kept communities together. Since the Conservatives gained power in 2010, hundreds of public libraries and Sure Start Centers, which are designed to help mothers and children, have been closed down. “The loss of community space, like youth centers, has had an massive impact on what would be a cure for loneliness,” says Naomi Eisenstadt, a public policy expert at the University of Oxford who was the first director of Sure Start. Crouch’s position was created with the best intentions but the Conservative government doesn’t “understand” what is needed, Eisenstadt tells TIME. “How do you fix loneliness without addressing the basic infrastructure issues that would reduce it?”
Crouch says she will prove her critics wrong simply by reducing the statistics. That could still prove tricky: Some loneliness metrics have been criticized for creating contradictory results, focusing primarily on the elderly, and not being able to capture how the sense of loneliness can evolve in a person over time. In Britain, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) is now devising a method to measure loneliness among the general population, while Crouch is designing a seed fund worth “tens of millions” for “innovative” anti-loneliness programs and has drawn together a team of 12 civil servants across various government bodies who are looking at community-led initiatives in Britain and abroad. “We’re at a real critical point now where we can really use all the levers that we have in government to try and connect people together” she says.
Experts like McDaid believe the best ways to tackle loneliness “[is] not provided by central government” but through “informal or formal community activities” he says. This includes Shared Lives, a British home-sharing scheme matching pensioners struggling with loneliness with young people needing somewhere to live, and Men’s Shed, which has opened more than 400 communal sheds to connect retired or unemployed men through activities like woodworking and repairing electronics. There are also refugee befriending services, like HostNation, that pairs refugees with volunteers in their neighborhood.
Intergenerational care homes are another interesting approach, Crouch says. The concept first originated in Japan, where a care home and nursery were combined in the 1970s in Tokyo. The idea has spread to Australia, Singapore, the U.S. and the first one of its type in the U.K. opened its doors in south London last year. Dutch dementia-friendly villages, meanwhile, have apparently led to residents becoming more active and needing less medication. “We can also learn from some parts of America, who have specific communities that are established for older people” Crouch says of Florida’s retirement villages, which are thought to reduce the effects of loneliness.
She aims to publish “some early bones of a strategy” in early fall. But loneliness, with a multitude of causes and effects, requires equally broad solutions. It could be a while before programs are set in motion and results are seen. “I could be the minister for happiness, because that’s exactly what I’m trying to achieve” she says of the task ahead. Some brisk exercise and getting out with the stroller, she says, was the fix she needed when she was low. Helping an entire nation will be more complicated.
