please read the witness for the dead because the protagonist is a priest and a crime investigator AND a zombie hunter. he's dirt poor. he carries his guilt like a little package. he feeds his neighborhood cats. he's so tired. he daily drinks his body weight in tea. he's put on trial by ordeal. he's even gay
#the witness for the dead#thara is my special little guy#cemeteries of amalo#the goblin emperor#thara celehar

every once in a while I think about how Celehar is basically like a noir detective
#the witness for the dead#cemeteries of amalo#thara celehar#the goblin emperor#think about it though! the gruff voice the tragic backstory the general demeanour of the guy#he sulks in his office waiting for people to come to him with Problems#couldve made this more noir pulp cover-ey but alas. i like period clothes#also geez long time no post lol

Also the books are definitely available at your library and in your preferred ebook/audiobook app, but if none of those options are available...
Here’s the Goblin Emperor audiobook.
Here’s the Goblin Emperor pdf.
Here’s the fan wiki, which explains the lingo and worldbuilding.

I am 100% certain, having worked a job where the manager is very present, that the whole cast and crew is THRILLED that Iäna is smitten by Thara Celehar. Not that I think the cast and crew don't like Iäna, I'm sure they do, he's brilliant, creative, hardworking, and fairly understanding of their needs and the theater, but he's also a perfectionist, demanding, and a micromanager from all appearances.
Then, suddenly, this wet dog of a man shows up for a murder investigation, and most of them probably aren't overly worried since they didn't do anything (blackmail victims aside), but their boss is spending the minutes before, during, and after performances talking to this guy. Taking field trips with him in fact. Promising him use of his personal box ANY TIME which is a bonkers thing to offer a person you've just met. He could have easily even said, for the duration of the investigation, but NOOOO it's an indefinite offer and he's actually sad when Thara doesn't take him up on it more often.
Whenever Thara shows up, even in the middle of rehearsals, if Iäna can get away, he does! And it might just be that he's not fighting with whats her face anymore but he seems more laid back. He steps back to let his people do their thing so he can not so sneakily flirt with Thara.
PLUS, this is backed up by the fact that after like the first time, Thara is literally never stopped. He's a pretty observant person, but Thara never says that it's always the same people at the front, in fact by the way he doesn't say it, it implies that either they're different people, or Thara is so focused on Iana that he hasn't noticed. WHICH MEANS that the cast and crew immediately gossiped about who and what this prelate was, and his effect on Iana, and made sure that none of the front of house people would ever stop or slow him down.
The whole theater ships them I'm positive of it, if not for love of their boss and the inherent drama of it, then at least because it makes their lives easier.

Thinking about how Maia had no idea about the positive impact he had on people at this point in time and crying and crying

Thara Celehar sits at a table for two in an Amalo tea house. He sips from his tea cup thoughtfuly
Thara's internal narration: 'wish I knew how Iäna Pel-Thenhior felt about me. It is hard to tell if he just wants to be friends, or... something more.'
Iäna Pel-Thenhior sits across from Thara, he rests his face in his cuped hands and gazes at Thara. Iäna blinks slowly and deliberately: he has "Love - you" written on his eyelids in eye-liner.
Thara mumbling: 'so hard to tell'

U reckon thara ever bumps into any of his petitioners at the municipal baths? Naturally, he'd be mortified if it ever happened and refuse to make eye contact with anyone but imagine it from the petitioner's pov like "oh that mysterious prelate who can fight ghouls and see ghosts and solved the emperor's murder? yea i saw him crying silently to himself in the bath this morning, he looked like a drowned cat." like surely being seen sopping wet ruins the dark and moody vibes somewhat
#municiple baths are also a severely under used fanfic trope too...#tge#thara celehar#the witness for the dead#cemeteries of amalo

That bit in Witness for the Dead when Celehar is forced into a conversation he's been trying to avoid, so he offers up a little prayer to the patron god of earthquakes?

the grief of stones if they got caught for the breaking and entering
[ID: thara and iäna from the cemeteries of amalo series drawn in mugshots like the barbie and ken mugshot meme. thara is a thin pale elf with curly hair and dark circles under his eyes. he is wearing a shabby coat and posing for a mugshot holding a card that has the initials "VB" in the corner, his name "Thara" in the center, and "Amalo" in the opposite corner. he looks anxious and stressed. iäna is a slim goblin-elven man, taller than thara, with dark skin and long braids. he poses cheekily with his sign, grinning. the sign has the same initials in the corners but says "and iäna <3" in the center. end ID]
inprnt
bonus azhanharad:
ID: a sketch of azhanharad, a large goblin man with dark skin, sideburns, and long locs joined with large rings. he wears an overcoat and a badge and is crossing his arms, looking disgruntled. end ID
#thara 'this is not how i imagined our first photographs'#iäna 'this is even BETTER than i imagined'#azhanhar-dad 'i'm not angry i'm just disappointed'#@artaline my tribute to you: the burns. the burns. they are so right.#the grief of stones#grief of stones#cemeteries of amalo#thara celehar#iäna pel thenhior#azhanharad#my art#described

When I read novels, I don't actually need to like the protagonist all that much. I don't need them to be a devastatingly kind person who stands as a beacon of decency in a dirty world and is always doing their goddamned best to make it better. But when it happens, it can feel pretty amazing.
