Engineers have developed a device that can generate temperatures of over 1000°C (1832°F) by efficiently capturing energy from the sun. It could one day be used as a green alternative to burning fossil fuels in the production of materials such as steel, glass and cement. Manufacturing these materials involves heating raw materials to above 1000°C by burning fossil fuels, which is extremely energy intensive. “About half of the energy we use is not actually turned into electricity,” says Emiliano Casati at ETH Zurich in Switzerland. “It’s used to produce many of the materials that we need in our daily lives and our industries.”

While this is just a proof-of-concept device, Casati hopes that it will one day be widely used as a green way of producing the high temperatures needed in manufacturing. “We really need to tackle the challenge of decarbonising these industries, and this could be one of the solutions,” he says.

STS-1: Delays
The maiden flight of NASA's first reusable spacecraft, Space Shuttle Columbia, was scheduled for June 1979 . However, there were issues with the glue used to install the tiles of her thermal protection system. (There were also issues with the main engines but that deserves its own post.)

"Tiles often fell off and caused much of the delay in the launch of STS-1, the first shuttle mission, which was originally scheduled for 1979 but did not occur until April 1981. NASA was unused to lengthy delays in its programs, and was under great pressure from the government and military to launch soon. In March 1979 it moved the incomplete Columbia, with 7,800 of the 31,000 tiles missing, from the Rockwell International plant in Palmdale, California to Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Beyond creating the appearance of progress in the program, NASA hoped that the tiling could be finished while the rest of the orbiter was prepared. This was a mistake; some of the Rockwell tilers disliked Florida and soon returned to California, and the Orbiter Processing Facility was not designed for manufacturing and was too small for its 400 workers.
Each tile used cement that required 16 hours to cure. After the tile was affixed to the cement, a jack held it in place for another 16 hours. In March 1979 it took each worker 40 hours to install one tile; by using young, efficient college students during the summer the pace sped up to 1.8 tiles per worker per week. Thousands of tiles failed stress tests and had to be replaced. By fall NASA realized that the speed of tiling would determine the launch date."

Due to these delays, the Skylab rescue mission missed its launch window and the station reentered the atmosphere on July 11, 1979. It would be another decade and a half before the shuttle had a station to rendezvous with.

The summary of a legend
(Ripped straight from an article on Throckmorton)
Early Life
Philip J. Throckmorton was born at Johnstone Valley Medical Center Utah 1968, to his parents Frank Throckmorton and his mother Francine Throckmorton. He has three brothers, two older, Jason and Deryll and one younger brother, Simon.
For the purposes of this book we will be referring to Philip as simply Throckmorton and his parents will be listed by name. As a child Throckmorton was described as “the single most gnarly dude to ever grace existence with his most righteous presence”. In 1981 he was placed into Jean Farb Middle School where he met one of his contemporaries and later rival, Anthony F. Hawk. At the age of six Throckmornton was diagnosed with anxiety and depression due to his stutter and overall quiet nature and lack of socializing during playtime. It was later revealed later in his life that he was high functioning autistic.
Throckmorton tested fairly consistently with others of his age all the way through late highschool where he met his best friend Jewel Kilcher (later known as the singer Jewel). When we reached out to Jewel for her opinion on Throckmorton she responded with “Throcky has to be the single most radical rail grinder in history”, to which she refused to elaborate. It was while he was in highschool that Throckmorton learned about what would one day cement his name in history, skateboarding. Throckmorton learned about skateboarding when he saw a rerun of Captain Kangaroo and noticed his middle school friend portraying the character “Skateboard Johnny”. With his friend, Tony Hawk, having a long lead on him Throckmorton decided to enter the skate scene in 1984.
Career
Throughout the 90’s Throckmorton was a trend setter, inventing several moves such as the twist-it, the Heelflip 230, Canfluffle, and the Kneedecimator 9000. Throckmorton is the only person known to win a skating competition while set on fire, one of his competitors showed up drunk and accidentally spilt a 45 on Throcky shortly before he leapt through a flaming hoop. Throckmorton survived the jump with only minor third degree burns, and still won by landing a 360 laser flip while still ablaze. The incident was given the nickname the Flaming Laser of 94, due to the event new regulations were put in place. The flaming laser of 94 has been used as an example by all skaters that “despite a search for adrenaline being a part of life for a skater, one should be careful to keep others safe as well”.
Sadly, after the Flaming laser of 94, Throckmorton spent most of his career in the shadow of others until one day, In April, 1999, Throckmorton almost became the first person to land a “900” spin. Unfortunately a judge was called to do a recount and it turned out that Throckmorton only completed “899” degrees. His record was then surpassed by one degree when Tony Hawk landed the trick three and a half months later.
Throckmorton surpassed “The hawkman’s” record by five degrees two months after during the annual XGames tournament the following year. Throckmorton went on record after the stunt saying “Tony has always been and always will be the greatest skater to ever live, I only reflect the greatness I see in him. I only wished he was here to see it”, followed by silence and Throckmorton leaving the scene.
Throckmorton’s career was cut short when in 2008, he suffered a life changing injury that fractured his hip in three places. Throckmorton went off grid, and after two years of soul searching he established the charity group “wheels for support”, a non profit company that manufactures custom skateboarding wheels out of recycled plastic. All proceeds gained is donated to the make a wish foundation.
People feared bitterness spread between Tony Hawk and Throckmorton until In 2011 when the “Birdman” tweeted out “I’m 43 and I did a 900 today.” Throckmorton was one of the first to comment congratulations, to the relief of skater fans everywhere who feared the long held friendship had changed over the years.
Throckmorton’s complicate history with gaming
Throckmorton first debuted in gaming with Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3, where he remarked that the 3-d model of him was fairly unflattering. After the whiplash he received from responding press, Throckmorton swore he wouldn't be in another videogame. As of 2019, he remarked that he would probably be open to the notion again if given the offer.

Description: The Foundation has various normal and anomalous ways of obtaining food and resources to keep itself going. But just like how some of the ways we obtain these resources is anomalous there are also some resources that are anomalous. As such, here is a list of all the anomalous resources the foundation has and what they use it for.
Metals, Plastics, and Stones:
- Telekill - An Iron like metal with the property of blocking or preventing anomalous extrasensory mental effects like telepathy and mind control. Often used to create armor to help MTF units dealing with psionics class anomalies.
- Caronium - A recently discovered anomalous metal that is seemingly no different than living flesh but is much stronger than tungsten, making it difficult to forge. Caronium also seems to "bleed" blue blood when it is damaged but due to its durability this is a rare occurrence to happen. Caronium is currently being used in prosthetic, body transfer, augmentation, and cloning experiments to see how useful it can be for medical purposes.
- Kallivantium - Anomalous metal created from SCP-3179 and refined to prevent itself from coming to life and creating more autonomous entities. It is now a simple metal that's no different to steel however when exposed to massive amounts of pressure and/or heat it will expand in mass as its atoms start multiplying. Typically used in explosives to create an inescapable death trap for enemies of the foundation or make emergency barriers within tunnel and case systems for containment purposes.
Grey Concrete - Seemingly normal cement that works like normal concrete once used. However, when formed into a hollow block like a box the interior will become a nearly infinite in size. As such Grey Concrete is used for containment and storage purposes.
- Cold Iron - A shining metal that is seemingly no different than regular Iron. Its anomalous properties are only visible it is forged into a weapon or ammunition. When Cold Iron is forged into a weapon and that weapon is used to harm an enemy, that enemy can no longer heal from the attack regardless of how much time passes. The same result can be done even to an immortal, regenerative, or Demi-God class entity. This does make Cold Iron dangerous, but it also makes it useful against anomalous hostile entities that can't be killed otherwise.
- Deep Silver Flow - Also known as DSF, is an anomalous metal that can't physically be touched by biological matter, only non-biological matter. When biological matter such as human flesh, plants, animals, and leather (dry or fresh) touches DSF, not only does it phase through the biological matter, but the biological matter starts to age rapidly. Testing has shown that contact with DSF for a single second is equivalent to 30 years. Because of this DSF is mostly used as dangerous weapons that can kill humans after 3 seconds of exposure at minimum. There unfortunately doesn't seem to be much other use for DSF.
- Plumanium - Created from SCP-3179, the only metal in existence that is half the weight of plastic and twice as strong as Tungsten. Surprisingly easy to forge, transport, and even manufacture making it extremely easy to produce and use as armor. Commonly used to create power infrastructure for containment cells, and for MTF Tau-5 as well as other MTF units of similar or greater power.
- Vibration Crystals - anomalous crystals that can only be found in [data expunged]. Emit low frequencies and physically vibrate in place, this is the limit of its anomalous properties when left alone. However, experimentation has shown that it's possible to manipulate the frequencies emitted by the Vibration Crystals to make them temporarily show a window into a different dimension. Testing has even shown that Vibration Crystals can become portals into different realities, however it's almost impossible to make a portal into a reality that's stable with our own and to maintain said portals require a lot of power. As of late only [data expunged] portals exist within the Foundation thanks to the Vibration Crystals.
- Insolubilis-chartaium - An anomalous metal that when handled by organic matter such as human hands its seemingly no different to clay; However, when interacting with other metals it is and always will be twice as strong as any metal it interacts with. Even if a metal projectile fires at it with accelerated speed of anywhere between Mach 5 to Mach 20 the metal will still be able to adapt instantly and thus doesn’t get damaged. The only way to damage the metal is for it to be attacked by energy-based attacks. Unfortunately, long exposure to this metal is toxic to humans so it’s only used in very rare occasions and extremely specific weapon purposes with very light usage. Normally coated with plastic when used as to prevent accidents from occurring during usage.
- Golem Stone - Anomalous material used and possibly created by Species of Interest: The ISU. in appearance, the texture is no different to that of stone but works a lot like the theoretical programable matter. When connected to ISU technology such as Datacalium, it can be programmed to take any form instantaneously.
- Datacalium - A computer like material created by Species of Interest: The ISU. The only material capable of Interacting with and programming Materials such as Golem Stone and Desuinite. Works like motherboards, keyboards, and computer screens all in one. However due to the complexity of its molecular structure it is nearly impossible to replicate or even reprogram itself. Thus, making it nearly impossible for the Foundation to control it or any other materials created by Species of Interest: The ISU, at all.
- Orichalcum - Harvested from Location of Interest: Atlantis, acts as a conductor between Datacalium and Deusinite. Absorbs and stores the Data imputed by Datacalium and the energy from the Deusinite while also transferring them to each other. Orichalcum even allows Datacalium to program Deusinite with Thaumaturgic properties without needing any rituals or “sacrifice”. Allows both metals to be utilized and create more complex machinery while also be more compact. Though unfortunately despite being the easiest to understand, Orichalcum is still unable to be manipulated or replicated by current Foundation standards.
- Deusinite - A super alloy created by Species of Interest: The ISU. Works as both a power source and armor in that it is five times stronger than tungsten carbide, almost as light as aluminum, and can conduct its own energy at all times. This would make Deusinite the ultimate component for armor if it wasn’t for the fact that its impossible to reform and reprogram it without Datacalium.
