Omar Rodriguez-Lopez camina por las calles de Jerusalén o la maldición de “The Bedlam in Goliath”

Aquella tierra ha visto nacer y morir al hijo de Dios, y congrega tres de las principales religiones del mundo. Pero también alberga un poderoso manto de oscuridad. En una pequeña tienda se pueden apreciar una multitud de objetos extraños; entre todos ellos, Omar se siente especialmente atraído por una tabla Ouija. Considera que es un excelente regalo para su mejor amigo que pronto festejará su cumpleaños: el también integrante de Mars Volta, Cedric Bixler-Zavala. Decide regresar a Estados Unidos con el preciado obsequio. Cedric se siente halagado con dicho presente, y mientras comparte gira con los RHCP, comienza a realizar improvisadas sesiones espiritistas. Se burlan de sí mismos, mientras que otras estrellas de rock, al finalizar un concierto, se atosigan de drogas y adolescentes dispuestas a todo por un segundo de fama; ellos aprecian más las veladas tranquilas y la posibilidad de comunicarse con el más allá.

Noche tras noche, los músicos se reúnen para jugar con el tablero, y lentamente comienzan a tener contacto con una presencia que comienza a brindarles diversos mensajes. Se hace llamar Goliath. Ellos la consideran su nueva musa inspiradora y se obsesionan con la posibilidad de grabar un disco en función de la nueva información que tienen a disposición. Entre otras historias, el espíritu gusta de hacer comentarios y revelaciones de un truculento triángulo amoroso entre él, su mujer, su hija y otros hombres. La historia no escatima en episodios de sangre, venganza y lucha de poder.

Están encantados con la novedad, es por ello que están dispuestos a intercambiar pequeños favores como ofrendas de comida, tabaco y ron. Sin embargo, las peticiones de la entidad irán en aumento con el paso del tiempo, dejando de lado esa primera sensación de juego y aventura. Primero pedirá permiso para albergarse por un tiempo en el cuerpo de algún voluntario de la banda. La negativa es rotunda. Luego exigirá ser liberado de aquel tablero, intercambiando lugar con alguno de ellos. Nuevamente, todos se niegan a complacerlo. Goliath jura venganza y promete hacer caer sobre ellos una terrible maldición.

Omar, debido a su crianza en Costa Rica y su familiaridad con la santería, comprende que la situación se ha descontrolado y que ya no se trata de un inocente juego entre amigos. Inmediatamente decide pedir la devolución del regalo. Hay que romperlo y enterrarlo en un lugar secreto. En algunas entrevistas, ha revelado que solo él conoce dónde se encuentra oculto el tablero; Cedric asiente, ni siquiera él está al tanto y de alguna manera lo agradece.

Comento rápidamente la serie de eventos desafortunados que la banda comenzó a sufrir a partir de ese momento: Juan Alderete, bajista de la banda, es diagnosticado con policitemia vera, una enfermedad de la sangre que solo posee el 1% de la población; se suceden varios cambios de bateristas en tan solo un año: Jon Theodore, Blake Fleming y Deantoni Parks, quienes comentan que durante la participación en las grabaciones comenzaron a tener graves problemas económicos como nunca han experimentado en su vida; Cedric se lastima profundamente el pie y tiene que ser intervenido quirúrgicamente y someterse a un largo proceso de rehabilitación que incluye volver a aprender a caminar.

Pero estos sucesos se completan con “borradas mágicas” del material y las cintas que iban generando en las distintias sesiones de grabación del disco; inundaciones en el estudio de Rodríguez-López, que le cuestan miles de dólares por pérdidas en equipos e instrumentos. Paul Hinojos, ingeniero de sonido de la banda, cursó varios ataques de pánico hasta el punto de encerrarse en su casa con el firme propósito de destruir los masters, dado que intuía una presencia maligna (él nunca estuvo al tanto del tablero ni de la fuente de inspiración del disco), para luego ser rescatado por Omar y Cedric. Cuando revisan el material, todas las canciones se encuentran desordenadas y varios pasajes han sido eliminados. En este contexto, deciden contratar otro ingeniero de sonido, quien ante su estupefacción, es testigo de cómo varias grabaciones realizadas hace escasos segundos, con equipos de primera calidad y sin ningún tipo de falla técnica, son “borradas” sin que medie alguna explicación lógica. Llegaron a realizar, de manera preventiva, hasta dieciséis respaldos de las grabaciones.

Frente a un disco que se resiste poderosamente a nacer, deciden no darse por vencidos y avanzar hasta verlo materializado. Intuyen que es una guerra espiritual que tienen que llevar adelante de manera secreta y disciplinada. Consideran que algo de Goliath no solo ha quedado atrapado en el tablero, sino que ahora también ha sido capturado por el registro musical de la banda, quitándole poder e influencia en el plano de nuestra existencia. Es por eso que interviene en la realidad para dejar sin efecto los registros de la banda. No quiere verse menguado en su poder. Los músicos deducen que cada vez que la música que han compuesto suene, cada reproducción lo debilita. Ahora ha quedado encerrado definitivamente en un loop de 12 canciones y ha sido subdividido en millares de copias que no hacen otra cosa que hacerlo cada vez más pequeño.

Mars Volta nos enseña a confiar en el arte, creando un disco que combate fuego contra fuego, regalándonos un preciado instrumento mágico capaz de conjurar el mal de este mundo a través del potencial creativo del ser humano.

El disco sale finalmente a la luz en el año 2008 y es titulado “The Bedlam in Goliath”.

Graças a Morgana, ele abriu um sorriso com sua pergunta e o coração de Celeste se acalmou com a visão. Só por isso conseguiu deixar de revirar os olhos com sua resposta, sentindo uma irritação quase divertida crescer no próprio peito. Ele gostava de provocar ciúmes nela, percebia, mas a maga não sabia se Cedric falava a verdade, afinal, ela mesma já tinha mentido apenas para gerar esse sentimento nele. Sendo verdade ou não, funcionou. Ela inspirou profundamente em reação ao calor crescente do ciúmes e à audácia dele de continuar falando. Nem mesmo os beijos apaziguadores estavam funcionando, pois falar de outras pessoas enquanto aproveitava a pele dela, de certa forma, parecia piorar a situação. Quando percebeu que sua primeira reação à revelação de que ele também se relacionava com homens fora pensar “Ótimo, tenho o dobro da concorrência”, acabou se irritando consigo mesma. Ugh. Era ridículo, nunca se sentiu assim por alguém antes, o passado de seus amantes nunca foi um aborrecimento para ela. Mas também seus parceiros nunca fizeram questão de esfregar na cara dela o quanto tinham se divertido antes de conhecê-la. Mesmo que ocasionalmente mencionassem uma ou outra ex namorada, ela sentia no máximo uma irritação pela falta de bom senso, nunca um ciúmes arrebatador como o que sentia por Cedric. Se pensasse melhor, tendia a acreditar no mago. Tudo que ouvira, a contragosto, sobre o histórico sexual dele apontava para uma vida muito bem vivida. É claro que Cedric podia escolher. Primeiro, era um Bondurant e com certeza as pessoas viviam para agradá-lo, como acontecia com ela, então se quisesse transar com dez pessoas numa noite só teria facilidade em encontrar quem estivesse disposto. Segundo, era extremamente atraente. Sendo seu rosto e seu corpo um dos motivos pelo qual Celeste tinha caído em suas graças, poderia prever que mesmo se não carregasse um sobrenome de peso, ainda teria uma fila de pessoas para escolher.  Terceiro, tinha uma lábia irritantantemente boa, sabia o que falar para atiçar o desejo em alguém, e a maga se tomava como exemplo disso. Por último, mas não menos importante, fofocas voavam dentro da elite maga e qualquer um que ouvisse sobre o desempenho de Cedric na cama acabaria tendo certa curiosidade.  Sabia no que estava se metendo quando resolveu se envolver com um Don Juan, mas isso não deixava a experiência menos desagradável. Celeste se obrigou a tentar demonstrar o mínimo do que sentia e abriu um sorriso que espelhava o dele, mas este ainda carregava um pouco de sua irritação. ー Tantos assim, é? ー arqueou as sobrancelhas, provocativa ー E precisavam ser secretos por quê? Estava escondendo da mídia ou da mamãe?

A irritação de Celeste foi perceptível, mesmo que ela tentasse escondê-la atrás de um sorriso, e por isso, quando fez suas perguntas com tom de provocação, o Bondurant não perdeu a pose. Dedilhou sua coxa por cima da saia enquanto respondia.

— Dos dois. — Disse.

Sempre que se aproximava de qualquer mulher, mesmo que por pura amizade, gerava um burburinho nos jornais a respeito da possibilidade de um casamento. Se o escolhido para ser exposto no momento era um homem, havia a questão da ausência de herdeiros a ser considerada pelas colunas de fofocas. De qualquer forma, por não se deitar apenas com mulheres pertencentes à família Bondurant e, portanto, as únicas capazes de dar a ele — a eles, o público e a família — uma prole legitimamente Bondurant, logo tomou a fama de playboy que até mesmo Celeste conhecia.

Cedric não se importava tanto com o que a mídia dizia, principalmente as mentiras, mas Aurora não dispensava comentários. A existência de Lyra abafava a pressão familiar sobre ele, pois o futuro de sua irmã carregava muito mais importância para os Bondurants mais velhos. Contudo, as escapadas que se tornavam públicas eram monitoradas de perto pela Matriarca, tanto em busca de sinais preocupantes de seriedade, quanto para evitar agilmente um escândalo midiático ou possível gravidez indesejada. Cedric não era tolo de trazer tal preocupação à mesa, fazendo rotineiro uso de preservativos — com a exceção atual de Celeste Mechathin —, mas isso não reduzia o alerta de Aurora sobre suas atividades. Aprendeu rápido, então, a esconder novos casos, pelo menos quando tinha o controle da situação e principalmente quando seu amante não fazia parte do pequeno círculo da elite Victoriana que já havia nascido cercado de segredos e sabia naturalmente como manter um longe da imprensa.

Agora que carregava sozinho o peso de manter a linhagem familiar, precisava ter ainda mais cuidado... Algo que não era exatamente um dom seu.

— Você também deve ter escondido alguns… Ainda mais tendo nascido herdeira. Talvez não tão casuais, mas… — E, assim, sua curiosidade se aguçou. Celeste não tinha, como ele, a fama de namoradeira, mas não havia passado a juventude sem ter alguns relacionamentos expostos pela mídia obcecada por vendas — pelo que vi você também já teve vários namorados. Quantos deles foram de verdade, e não invenção dos jornais?
