Allow me to kick nano off by introducing my characters to you with my favorite scene I’ve written for anything ever!
—x
“I swear to god.” Cam huffs, nearly collapsing alongside Cayden as he tries to slowly lower him to the ground. “If you think you can die by someone else’s hand—”
“What are you going to do?” Cayden rasps around a painful, choked off breath as he falls to the ground uncerimoniously— and far more quickly than Cam intended, if his wince of sympathy pain is any indication. “Kill me?”
Cam’s sharp glare is anything but intimidating to Cayden who has gotten that glare more times than he can count in his life. From the first time they met, when his glare really was filled with malice and disinterest, all the way to about ten minutes ago, even to thirty seconds ago— Cayden is a master at parsing that look.
There are subtle nuances to it that indicate what Cam is really feeling. For a long time, Cayden had thought that it was all in the eyebrows. The more furrowed, the sharper the lines of Cam’s eyebrows, the more genuinely angry he was with Cayden. But that wasn’t it— or rather, that wasn’t only it. There were little subtleties in all aspects of the look— the corners of his lips, the shape of his eyes, the set of his jaw— that really told Cayden what he needed to know. In this case, the look was exasperated, fond and worried. Definitely worried. That was the largest emotion that was swimming in Cam’s eyes every time he had looked at Cayden in the last ten minutes.
“I’ll haunt your stupid ass,” Cam remarks instead of addressing anything that he’s currently concerned about.
Not that he really needs to say anything— the gaping wound in Cayden’s side is a pretty big indicator of Cam’s worries. Not to mention the way he can’t put any weight on his left leg without it feeling like it’s going to buckle underneath him. He’d had to be partially dragged by Cam all the way to cover. He’d attempted to limp as much of it as he could but somehow, even when he was making active effort to go as fast as he possibly could, ti was slower than if Cam just dragged him. And really, he’d been so tired that he hadn’t minded the dragging,
“Pretty sure I would be the one doing the haunting.” Cayden tries to ease back against the wall behind him, his side sending sharp jolts of pain through his body that caused him to jump and pause periodically. He tried to breathe through it, doing his best to relax his muscles. It was incredible how much pain made a difference in such simple things. “Living people don’t haunt ghosts, it’s the other way around. So I would haunt your stupid ass.”
Cam doesn’t reach for him immediately but Cayden can tell he wants to. Cam’s hands hover at his side, just a little bit in front of him as if they had started to reach out to him immediately and it had taken Cam a second to notice and stop them.
“I’ll be the first one.” Cam replies, but the downturn of his lips tells Cayden that all the humor has bled out of the situation. Now Cam is just outright worried, somewhere on the verge of panicking, he thinks. “I’ll make history by haunting you in the afterlife.”
Cayden manages one huff of a laugh before the pain spikes again and he’s wincing, taking in a deep breath through his teeth and trying to keep his head on straight, “You’d go that far for me?” He tries to tease because he knows his reaction is only making Cam more anxious and right now they can’t afford for either one of them to lose their cool. “And here I thought you wanted to kill me.”
“Shut up.” Cam whispers as he finally reaches for Cayden and there’s so much tenderness in those two words, so much fond adoration, so much fear that Cayden almost does lose his mind.
Tenderness is something that hasn’t been meant for him in years. Ever since his mom had passed away, he hadn’t had anyone treat him with the same kind of concern and kindness that he saw in Cam’s eyes now.
And that wasn’t strictly true— for awhile now, Cam had been caring for him and trying to tend to him in ways that felt similar to the love his mother had but somehow entirely different. He tried not to look at it too closely sometimes, afraid that he would scare it off if he acknowledged it. Because he was used to a lot of things, but by now he certainly wasn’t used to this. He wasn’t used to deft but delicate fingers pressing his side, wasn’t used to listening to Cam murmur concerned half-sentences under his breath as he bit the corner of his lip in an attempt to keep whatever darker thoughts he was no doubt having from slipping out. He wasn’t used to being cared for so openly, so honestly.
Because this tenderness— this cut worse than a knife.
Cayden knew that with absolute certainty because he had been cut with a knife before.
This, though— this wasn’t a physical wound. There would be no marks of Cam’s concern marring his skin, no scar he could point to and explain this situation. The cut that Cam gave him with his distress was entirely emotional— it cut much, much deeper than any blade possibly could. It would leave the kind of scar that nobody could see, but Cayden would be able to feel forever. If he ever lost this, if he ever lost Cam—
“If one of us has to die here,” Cayden mumbles as Cam presses a hand over the wound in his side to see if pressure makes any sort of difference. “I’m glad it’s me.”
“Don’t say shit like that,” Cam growls immediately and the pressure on Cayden’s side increases for a moment as Cam’s anger flares. He leans into Cayden, his eyes flashing and for a moment, he looks as lethal as he actually is.
It’s a rare sight for Cayden because Cam is his best friend and he knows only the good sides of Cam. That is to say, he knows Cam for who he really is. It just so happens that who he really is is made up entirely of good sides.
Cayden presses his own hand over Cam’s, the temperature difference between their skin stark and probably alarming if Cayden had the energy to be alarmed. “I’m serious.” He breathes, trying to catch Cam’s gaze but Cam steadfastly refuses to allow it. “Not just because the world would be better off if you were the one to survive, though that’s true, but because I don’t want to see a world without you in it.”
“And you think I want to see a world without you in it?” Cam all but roars, only their dire situation keeping his temper even the tiniest bit in check, preventing him from raising his voice as much as he’d probably like to. His chest heaves as he takes ragged breaths, his shoulders rising and falls with so much effort, Cayden can feel the strain of it. “You think that it’s okay for you to just leave me here? That I would be okay if you— If I lost you?”
The air is cold— or maybe that’s Cayden, he can’t quite tell anymore. But he knows there’s a chill creeping across his skin. Despite it, he can feel the warmth of Cam’s meaning pressing against his heart, nestling into a home between his ribs.
“You’d find a way.” Cayden’s hand slips off of Cam’s, his arm feeling weak. He lets it drop to his side, lets his head fall back against the wall behind him. “To be okay, I mean.”
“No, I wouldn’t.” Cam says with so much sincerity it steals what little breath Cayden had managed to get into his lungs. “I would never be okay, do you hear me? I would never be okay if you died on me here and now. So don’t you even fucking think about it.” Cayden blinks slowly back at him, trying to get his hazy mind to focus. “Cayden, you asshole, do you hear me? You’re not allowed to die right now! You’re not allowed to— I wouldn’t— I couldn’t—“
There’s a pressure on his chest and it takes Cayden a moment to realize that Cam has bowed his head, pressing it against his sternum. His shoulders shake, his hand trembles where it’s pressed to Cayden’s side, Cayden can feel it. He’s so warm, like a personal furnace who is here specifically to fight off the chill that’s threatening to steal all the way across his skin.
And maybe it’s the fact that Cam’s breaths are as ragged as his own, maybe it’s because Cam has been so raw and honest in his words. Maybe it’s because a small part of Cayden is afraid that he actually is dying right now, afraid that any fo these words could truly be his last. He isn’t sure and at the moment, he doesn’t really have the time to make himself sure, all he knows is that he has a truth he has to ay and this very well may be the last chance he ever gets to say it.
“I’m glad I met you.” The world is starting to seem hazy around the edges, the background fading away until it’s only Cam that Cayden can see. “I’m glad you showed up that first day and interfered with my fight. I—“ He takes a shuddering breath and raises a hand to gentle cradle the back of Cam’s head. Cam’s still pressed against him but Cayden knows he’s listening, absolutely rapt. “I didn’t know it then, but I needed you in my life. “
It’s silent for only the length of one, slow heartbeat before Cam pulls away and looks at him, “And, what? You don’t need me anymore so you’re just going to leave me?”
“Cam, you idiot.” Cayden’s arm falls to Cam’s shoulder and he lets it rest there, lets it connect the two of them, a physical representation of their paths that crossed that day. Cayden would’ve never guessed that Cam would matter like this to him some day, that he would be one of the only people Cayden would burn the world to the ground to protect. “I will never stop needing you. I’d spend every goddamn day on this Earth by your side if I could.”
“You can!” Cam cries, throwing his hands up into the air. He pauses for a moment and then settles his palms against Cayden’s cheeks, cupping his face gently. He repeats himself, quietly this time and it’s so much more broken when it’s spoken so softly, so overflowing with fear. “You can. You can fight, you can get through this and then we can spend every goddamn day together. Cayden, you must.”
“I’m so tired of fighting.”
And it’s true— it’s so painfully true, it hurts more than his throbbing leg, more than his bleeding side. He is so tired. He’s been fighting since his mom died— fighting for a place in his dad’s heart, a spot in his own family and then a spot in this world. He’s been fighting Malumbra, he’s been fighting the Dargobiu, he’s been fighting himself. He’s so tired of fighting because he hasn’t been given anything in his life without a fight. Even this, the potential last moments of his life— he had to fight for these, too. He had to fight to make it out of there alive, to even get to this place where he can have this fleeting moment with Cam.
“I know.” Cam’s thumb strokes gently across his cheek and the motion is so soothing that Cayden can’t help but close his eyes. “I know, but you have to keep fighting. You have to do it for me. Please, Cay? Please? For me?”
“That’s not fair.” Cayden coughs once and it rattles his whole frame, His ribs feel like they’re bumping into each other as he does, loose and brittle and just as close to falling apart as the rest of him is. “It’s called a dying wish and I’m the one who’s dying. Stop trying to steal my wish.”
“It’s too late.” Cam leans forward again and Cayden can feel Cam’s forehead press against his own. “I already took your wish. If you want it back, you’re going to have to stay alive and come get it from me.”
Cayden laughs. It tries to turn into another cough but he fights it off. “Always playing dirty.”
“You know it.” Cam all but whispers, so close that Cayden can hear him perfectly anyways. “Anything to keep you here with me.”
“Cam—“
“No,” Cam shakes his head and it disturbs the hair falling across Cayden’s forehead, jostles him just enough that he feels momentarily more awake. “You don’t get to say anything else to me unless you’re promising to survive this.”
“What if—“
“I know you don’t ever listen,” Cam cuts him off gently. “But listen now. I won’t hear it unless it’s you promising me that you’ll survive.”
“I can’t make that promise.”
“I can’t hear you.”
“Cam—“
“I can’t hear you!”
They’re silent for a long moment and Cayden fights to blink his eyes back open. Cam is there, barely an inch away, his own eyes closed. He isn’t crying, but Cayden can see how tightly he’s clenching his jaw to fight off the tears or any other unwanted emotions. He knows that he would do anything for Cam, he’s known that for a long time now. And anything, he knows, includes fighting to survive, even when every cell in his body is begging him to give up, to let them rest like they haven’t done in so many years.
He takes in a slow inhale, focuses on really expanding his lungs.
“Fine,” He says, and Cam’s eyes fly open to stare back at him. “I promise, I’ll survive.”
“Really?” Cam sounds breathless as he sits upright.
There’s blood on his hands, blood on both of their shirts and no doubt blood on Cayden’s cheek. He’s aching from head to toe, from his skin all the way down to his bones. There isn’t a single part of him that isn’t protesting his promise but he knows that he can’t give up now, not when Cam is asking him to fight,
“Really.” He nods weakly, “But I’m going to make your life hell when I recover.”
“I wouldn’t have it any other way.” Cam agrees with a smile.

Knight Commander as a Companion
@dragonologist-phd since she’s the one who made the prompt
Name: Rhialla Mistwine
Race: Emberkin Aasimar
Class: Hex Channeler Witch Ancestors Patron/ Purifier Oracle Wind Mystery Powerless Prophecy curse
Appearance: Rhialla is a relatively short Aasimar woman. Hair and eyes betraying her Peri heritage. Her hair is white gold, normally pulled back into a bun of varying levels of looseness. Her eyes are blood orange in color. When her halo is active it’s more like a fire red instead of the standard golden yellow. She’s normally seen in light traveling clothes or plain dresses with hidden pockets. Her hands frequently smudged in ink. She generally gives off an air of softness and delicateness.
Favored Weapon/Equipment: light crossbow/ shirt + Haramaki corset
Top Skills:Knowledge (Arcana), Knowledge (World), Persuasion, Intelligence, Charisma
Alignment: Neutral Good(can become lawful evil)
General Personality:Rhialla is a personable if somewhat detached, curious young woman who prefers to live and let live with most people, partially out of its easier to not draw unneeded attention and partially just from her trying to not pass judgement on them because she’s a witch and as an emberkin has a evil in her blood somewhere. While she’s not against having attention on her, she is aware of witch hunters like Hulrun about so she prefers to keep her head down in that regard. She’s struggled her entire life with the pull between good and evil due to her Peri heritage so she leans hard on good or tries to temper her more evil aligned inclinations with neutrality. She gets touchy when around adherents of Sarenrae.
What traits/values do they admire? Mercy(or pity), Understanding(acceptance not needed), cunning
What do they think of their role in the Crusades, and of sharing the Commander’s Mythic powers? What are their reasons for joining the commander’s party? She doesn’t really care for the crusades seeing as it wiped out her entire family and booted her onto the streets until her adopted mother took her in. She finds the sharing of the powers utterly fascinating.
What traits/values do they disapprove of? Zealotry, Cruelty, hypocrisy, constant excess (in either direction, an ascetic is just as bad as a hedonist)
Are they affiliated with any dieties? She was raised to revere and worship Iomedae. Depending on your choices it can switch to Asmodeus or Cayden Cailian.
She has no particular reason to join the commander other than right place right time, and she wants to do what’s right when given the chance.
Who are their friends among the other party members? Woljif because she doesn’t judge him too much for his sticky fingers, remembering the year she was on the streets and understanding that he never got that chance. Also bonding over their great grandparent being Super Evil.
Lann because she doesn’t let him squeeze out of confronting himself or his feelings, and she just generally finds him pleasant to be around.
Pretty much all of them from one degree to another, barring Cam and Wendu really. She doesn’t judge, or tries not to and none of them are Sarenrae adherents or with hunters so there’s nothing to stress over.
What about rivals? Camellia isn’t even a rival, she just hates her. Wenduag creeps her out on many levels, but she can’t help but feel pity for her and wants to help her not Be Like That.
A more proper rival would be Daeran: petty sniping, jokes of various levels of mean at the others expense. Despite this they do like each other. They’re worsties(affectionate).
Are they on any councils? If so, what sort of advice do they give? Rhialla would be on the leadership and diplomacy councils. Her advice is level headed with a focus on causing as minimal damage to the common person as possible.
Where do they hang out in Drezen? In the Abyss? In Drezen she’d normally be found in the tavern or sitting on the stairs between Woljif and Ember. In the abyss she’d be near the ledge looking over the city.
What are their idle animations? She’ll fix her bun or dust off her clothes. Sometimes she’ll pat down her sides as if she’s looking for something she accidentally lost.
If they’re taken to Areelu’s lab, what is their dream? Her dream is her birth family and her adopted mother all together as she introduces her non descript lover.
Do they advise the commander to abandon or keep their mythic powers? It depends on the path and how her quests up until then had been resolved, and even their counters for things like angel and aeon. A lawful angel, true aeon, demon, and lich she advises to abandon. She expresses wariness on the trickster path. If its merciful angel or azata she supports keeping it whole heartedly. A fallen(or has the highest points there) Rhialla will express overt acceptance of going becoming a devil if she’s in the party during that conversation.
Describe their companion quest:
Her quest is about her struggle between her personal struggle between her impulses for good and evil, and if your innate power makes you evil, or if you the power is evil any longer if it’s yours now and you made it your own.
Act 1: You encounter her trapped under some rubble a little ways away from where you find Anevia. She starts off as an npc follower having already used her healing hex for the day she can’t finish healing herself until the following day. She isn’t recruitable until you reach Defender’s Heart where you can learn she was born and spent her childhood in Kenabres before being adopted. Once recruited you’ll get a quest about acquiring a scroll and some books(you can’t read them but you can feel the power radiating from them) from a point on the map. She’ll innocuously ask you about your opinion on powers coming from suspect places. Depending on your answer it raises her rejection, fallen or acceptance counters.
Act 3: You gain the quests from her visiting the war room. She’s been having nightmares, and looks to you for some advice on what to do. This can raise her rejection counter, but no impact on fallen or acceptance.
Her other longer quest is on the map, asks you to indulge her and take her to a point on the map that her nightmares directed to. At this point you’re accosted by a devil who works for Mephistopheles, trying to get her to fall and sign her soul away so she can claim her birth right to be an eirnyes as a direct descendant of Eiseth. Your remarks here give points towards each particular ending: give in, reject it because at some point it was tainted by evil, who cares where it came from its yours now.
Post quest talk is another chance to net more points towards the end you want.
Act 5: Her quest locks in her ending. At this point you’re accosted by the devil once more, here you learn that they want to use Rhialla as a bargaining chip to ensure Eiseth works with him, if you agree then she’ll be taken to hell after the end of the crusades to be used as payment as cooperation for plot unknown to you. If you’ve been pushing her towards falling she’ll make the choice without your input.
If you’ve been pushing her to acceptance of her heritage then she rejects the offer stating she’s fine right as she is. You fight the devil to a stand still and they retreat leaving her alone for the time being.
If you’ve been pushing her to rejection she has a breakdown and ends up freezing the both you and the devil. Deciding that as broken as she is, she isn’t worth the effort the devil leaves.
How she responds for the rest of the game depends on how you resolved it. Fallen she wonders how she’s going to navigate hell based off of what she knows of the infernal planes, but figures she’ll adjust quickly. Rejection has her silent before yelling at you, and wondering if you’re happy, you hypocritical bastard. Acceptance Rhialla thanks you and points out that her heritage and your powers aren’t so different and that they, you’ve each made them your own regardless of whose they were before. They’re yours now.
Note: Rejection Rhialla won’t call you a hypocrite if you’re legend path as of completing her quest she’ll just say that you were right.
Are they romanceable? Describe their romance quest/scenes if you want! She’d be romanceable, but you can also set her up with Lann or Daeran, if you aren't romancing one or either of them. Lann is the default if you don’t romance her or him. Points are awarded for your responses about either of them and taking her along with either of them when traveling.
Act 1: Your first flirt, or nudge towards either of them. Nothing really happens here, but there’s a few chances to get points for acceptance or fallen romance.
Act 2: Compliment her warmth if you’re romancing her. During the Gargoyle attack you can tell her that you’ll protect her, she’ll get annoyed by the perceived weakness but thank you nonetheless.
Again you can nudge her towards Daeran or Lann by asking her opinion on either of them, and at her confusion on why you’re asking, bluntly tell her that you’ve noticed her spending a lot of time around the one you want her to end up with. This will be a big affection boost for them.
Act 3: The first scene is a camping scene where she apologizes for Storm gaining the habit of sitting on your head. Tell her it’s not a big deal, or that you’re honored to be the new favorite perch of her familiar.
The second scene/date is her asking you to be a subject for a new spell she’s trying out. She won’t say what it is until you agree except that its not for combat and minimal utility. The spell in questions is flower conjuration with a unique effect of reducing fatigue.
Act 4: Her romance scene in the abyss starts off by her asking if you’re alright since getting exiled here. Be emotionally vulnerable to her, she’ll give you a hug and kiss your cheek and reiterate that she’ll always be there for you.
You can massively boost her counter with Lann by bringing her to his quest.
Act 5: The final romance scene, this will take place after her final quest. She tells you that she’s putting together a surprise for you the two of you, and asks you to avoid your own room until she calls for you. The timer will skip ahead to her calling you to your chambers. She’ll be finishing up creating a romantic scene for the two of you. You can choose to pursue sex with her at this point and she’ll agree. For the post sex talk she’s insecure and asks you if you want to be with her because you love her or just her looks. Replying the latter breaks off the romance and she’ll refuse to speak to you for thee in game days.
For a fallen Rhialla, its the same set up, except she’ll suggest the sex. For the post sex talk if you tell her you love her, she’ll say that you’ll never escape her. If you reject her, her anger flashes white hot for a moment before she regains her composure and makes it clear that the only reason that she isn’t retaliating is because she needs you to close the wound and from the contract she signed in her final quest.
Note: if you pushed her to the rejection end, it will immediately break off the romance.
Threshold: She’ll have a conversation with you about how you’re both going to survive and that she still needs to introduce you to her mother, the conversation ends with her kissing you and making you promise that you’ll live. If you’ve been nudging her towards her other options she’ll thank you for doing so and give you a hug. A Fallen Rhialla states that she’ll enjoy the time you two have together before she has to fulfill her end of the bargain and that you’ll be the only thing she’ll miss about [this place].
Note, for if you don’t romance any of the three: If you don't get Lann's good end or he dies during act 5 her and she had Daeran's affection counter active her ending slide mentions that they marry after Lann's death and that rumors on why they married are plentiful and most contain a kernel of vague truth.
What would their ending slides be like?
Acceptance: Rhialla stayed in Drezen for a short time, when she left it was with much fanfare. She traveled far and wide but always returned to her home in Nerosyan often with some ragamuffin kid she had taken under her wing in tow.
Rejection: Rhialla disappeared shortly after the official end to the crusade. Turning away from both her Celestial and fallen angel heritage. She threw herself into her ice and winter magics. No one knows what happened to her, rumors from she died by her own hand or became a reclusive witch in the woods, but one thing is certain lost travelers can hear a woman despaired cursing of the knight commander on the wind during snow storms.
Fallen: Rhialla disappeared shortly after the official end to the crusade. She was going to hell, willingly and almost happily. There she was rumored to have been transformed into an erinyes by Eiseth herself, and never found far from her fallen angel turned devil ancestor’s side. Her loyalty to the Queen of the Night absolute. Eventually she reappeared on the face of Golorian. She visited the Commander from time to time, only half way serious on trying to get them to sign over their souls to Eiseth. Perhaps one day she can be redeemed once more.
Acceptance Romanced by Commander: Rhialla stayed with the commander. Joyful and content with her life, she left at times to help someone somewhere or to find some lost magic, but she always found her way back home to her love. Often with some ragamuffin kid she pulled under her wing right on her heels.
There is no difference between romance or unromanced for Fallen end slide.
Secret end: As Rhialla adjusts to her new found divinity, she doesn't interfere in Golorian affairs except to act as a good patron to witches and oracles. Later on She’s also been seen to walk among mortals in different guises.
She has a few line swap around if you budged her to either lann or daeran and how you resolved their quests.
Any other fun facts?
She can speak three different languages and read about five fluently. This isn’t counting Common or Celestial.
A Fallen Rhialla WILL leave on demon path, there is no way to keep her if she falls and you are a demon.
You can recruit her anytime in act 1, or in act 2 if you convince Galfrey to stay. Otherwise she returns to Nerosyan with the Queen’s entourage.
Provide some dialogue/bark examples!
Conversation start: The young Aasimar looks up from her work, a soft smile graces her visage. “What do you need Commander?”
Conversation End: “Well if that’s everything then.” Rhialla smiles once again before turning back to the item in her hands.
Selection: “I'm paying attention.” / “What do you want to know?”
Skill Check Pass: “It worked? Of course it worked.” / “Done, as expected.”
Skill Check Failure: “Shit.” / “Maybe someone else should try”
Combat start: “Ok, so no talking this out” / “Get ready!”
Combat end: “Anyone hurt?” / “I think I might have singed myself”
Knock out: “I don’t want to die” / “This is why I didn’t join the crusades sooner”
Enemy down: “Burn!” / “Sorry no other way.”
Provide some examples of companion banters!
Solo: Storm! Stop trying to take my quill, its not going to make me spend time with you faster. If you take it I’ll just pluck a new one from your feathers. Storm!
With Others:
Regill: While I question the wisdom of dismissing it outright, and the structure in Hell could do you some good. You did well to not compromise.
Rhialla: Thank you Regill.
-
Ember: Aw, I think Soot and Storm are friends! They’re playing with each other.
Rhialla: I don’t think they’re playing Ember. I think they’re fighting.
-
Woljif: So I guess you’re not so holy huh? Must feel bad having a Devil for a great grandma.
Rhialla: Never claimed I was. Unlike other aasimar I get a pull towards both good and evil.
-
Rhialla: Arueleshae, is it ever hard to deny your more evil impulses?
Arue: Yes it is. Everyday is a struggle for me. That’s why I hope for the day when I no longer have them. If you’re worried you can talk to me about it. I know better than most.

NaNoWriMo Day 4
Man, if there’s one thing I’m quickly learning it’s that getting words in after a 10 hour work day and all my household chores are completed is a lot harder than I remember it being. Most likely because I’ve never worked 10 hour days during Nano before. Regardless, I’m getting it done and that’s what counts!
Today I decided I did not like the scene I had been working on last night before bed and that I did not want to keep working on it. So instead I used all of today’s words to create a new scene that I didn’t really have a plan for. I had a lot of fun writing it, though, and really am enjoying the way it turned out. As with every year previously, crawls and my writing friend Maddie will be the only two things to get me through this event.
Cayden has faced death more times than any person should. At first it had been recklessness and a willingness to tempt fate. And then it had been the kind of misplaced confidence that told him he was unstoppable as long as he had Cam on his side. Because Cam always swooped in before it was too late and saved him. Cam always showed up, exasperated but ready to fight and together they always walked out of there. Walked may be a bit of a broad term because Cayden was certain that he had hobbled more than walked most times, stumbled a few of the other times. But the point remained that they always made it out alive, both of them.
But the Malumbra were closing in on him and Cam wasn’t anywhere in sight. For the first time in many, many years, Cayden had the fleeting thought that he might not make it out of this one alive.
He tried not to let it grip him, tried not to succumb to the thought. If he was going to go down, he was going to go down fighting. His only regret was that this fight hadn’t been started by him. At least when he was out picking fights with random Malumbra, pissing them off just because he had some misplaced anger that he needed to vent, he deserved to get his ass kicked. This time he had well and truly been minding his own business, just trying to pass the hours when he’d been jumped, beaten and dragged to this alley, thrown unceremoniously onto the ground before them as they closed in around him. If they were Malumbra he had pissed off in the past, he certainly didn’t recognize them— not that he kept particularly close tabs in his memory on the people he had wronged in the past. But they didn’t talk like they knew him, either.
As far as he could tell from the short time he’d been a part of this encounter, he was just some random bystander to them, too. And maybe that was karma coming to bite him in the ass, making him the recipient of misplaced anger after all the times he had taken it out on innocent people. He couldn’t say he didn’t deserve it, though he liked to think that he was somehow going to make it to the end of his life without facing the consequences of his actions. He liked to think that he had grown, at least somewhat, as a person and in that process he had atoned for some of his shittier habits.
That, apparently, was not the case.
“Look at him,” The first one spat, taking a step forward, Despite the fact that they had shadows at their beck and call, dancing in the light of the flickering lamp, Cayden could see some of his own blood on the man’s knuckles. That hit had been particularly painful, though he’d never admit that aloud. “Thinks he’s going to fight back.”
“Can we just hurry this up?” The second one remarks, their posture much more lazy and inattentive than the other two. They lean back a little on their feet and look like they’d be stuffing their hands in their pockets if it weren’t for the fistfuls of shadows they had to control. “I’ve got other things to do.”
“Things more important than this?” The third one nudges the second one in the ribs, his sharp grin catching the barely-there light and filling Cayden’s stomach with dread.
“Things more important than this.” The second one confirms.
“Come on,” The first one crones again, looking back over his shoulder. “It’s not going to take all night.”
“I was taught never to play with my food.” The second one remarks and it sounds like he would be rolling his eyes but Cayden definitely is too far away to be able to tell.

Seventy-Five
Randi
Cameron’s crying woke me up early in the morning as usual. I started to get up but Cayden mumbled, "I got him," and got up from the bed. I looked over at the clock. It was 8am. Cayden would be leaving for work soon and I'd be going to drop Cam at my moms. I was trying to slowly get back to going to work, a couple of times a week anyways. Cayden worked a normal 9-5 schedule now, the ride share app he had invested in had blown up and now he was a cowener in a big time company which kept him busy. He really loved what he was doing which made me happy. I was co-owner of 2 salons now. After almost 2 years of back and forth, a second location was up. That required me putting in more regular hours though, which meant leaving Cameron. I felt guilty about working for months after He was born, but now a year later, Cayden and Ms. Williams,my therapist, both convinced me that working was good for me and that i wasn't evil for doing so. He was 1 now and I felt better about leaving him with someone else. I wasn’t breastfeeding anymore and he didn’t need 24/7 attention. But i couldn't deny being a mom came first on my list of priorities and consumed most of my time and thoughts, and i was fine with that.
"You going into the salon today?" Cayden asked, coming back in the room with Cam. I smiled reaching out for him. Seeing him in the morning was the best part of my day because after sleeping for a few hours I missed him. His face lit up when he saw me and he giggled, bringing out his cute dimples. When I looked at him I thought about the fact that I almost missed out on this because I was set on not having kids. I also thought about everything I went through to give birth to him and the fact that I’d do it all over again.
"Good morning mommy's baby," i cooed, nuzzling his face. "Yeah, i'm going in. I have so much to do for tax season," I said.
"My mom taking him this week?" he asked. I nodded. Our parents switched who would watch him. It was perfect because they all didn't work anymore. God knows i couldn't leave Cam with strangers. Cayden took his shirt off to go shower, revealing his perfect chest, well perfect except the gunshot wound under his right peck. He leaned down to kiss me and i met him. He kissed me for a long time and Cam started crying.
"You need to get ready, and i gotta get him some food," i said. We went separate ways and went about our morning routines.
At the door Cayden gave Cameron some last cuddles then handed him to me. He kissed my forehead.
"Imma see you tonight beautiful," he said. I smiled and nodded. I watched him get in his car and go. Then i had to get Cam and myself in my car and drove to Cay's mom's house. On the way there I thought about how normal life was now, Cayden going to work in the morning, to a legit job, m dropping of our kid, and going to work. Life was so different now.
I got to the salon later in the morning and went back to my office. I sat down and immediately checked my phone. It was habit now whenever someone else was watching Cam. I checked for texts or calls about him. When i saw nothing i reluctantly got my computer on and started pulling up my files. I worked for about 2 hours before i cracked and checked grabbed my phone to call Cay's mom. She didn't answer my call and i put my phone down angrily.
"He's fine Randi," i said to myself, turning back to my computer. The separation anxiety i felt with him was hard to explain. It was different than with Cayden. When he wasn't with me i got that feeling like when you think you're forgetting something really important, but constant. It was weird not hearing him cry or laugh for so long, it put me on edge. I wasn't sure how Cayden was able to just go to work like it was nothing.
Jada came in then.
"Hey, I put all those receipts on your desk, did you see them?" She asked.
"yeah," i said with a sigh. I glanced at my phone again.
"Whats up with you?" She asked.
"It's Cameron," i said.
"Why is he sick?" she asked with a frown.
"No. But Cayden's mom won't answer my calls. I just want a picture of him so i know he's ok," i said.
"She's probably busy watching him, it's a good thing she not on her phone," she said. She had a good point. "You worry too much," she said, leaving the office. I knew i worried too much, i didnt wanna be like this. It just came with the whole mom thing.
Later a knock came at my door and i looked up. It was a delivery guy.
"Mrs. Jones?" he asked.
"yeah, thats me,"i said. He gave me the clipboard and i signed it, looking around for the package.
"Package is out front," he said. I thanked him and went out to the front desk to check what is was. China turned to look at me.
"I hate you," she said. I was confused, then i saw the huge bouquet of flowers. I smiled like an idiot, jumping up and down a little. I picked up the card.
--->To my beautiful wife, because i can't stop thinking about you. Im sure you're thinking about Cam not me but that's ok. P.S he's fine, stop worrying. From: Cay and Cam
I teared up and held the card to my chest. I loved how thoughtful Cayden could be. That gave me the motivation i needed to get through the day.
I picked Cam up around 3 and made my way back home. Cole called me on my way saying that he was coming over. He beat me home and was waiting in the drive way when i got there. He helped me get Cam out of the car.
“My little man!” He said, taking him from his car seat.
“He just put on a show on the way home, cried the whole ride. He's so tired.” We went inside.
“You on your own?” He asked.
“Yeah, Cayden still at work.”
“Damn, he really taking this CEO shit serious. You can always leave him with me if you need a break,” he said.
“I’m seriously gonna take you up on that, but anyways, so bachelor party. I have everything set, just need to know what time you want the limo.”
“Like 10 probably. I plan on being drunk by then so it don’t really matter,” he chuckled, letting Cam play with his fingers.
“Ok. I still need an outfit, I’m always scared to be out dressed by the strippers,” I said. I was gonna be the only girl at the bachelor party, I wasn’t planning on staying too long anyways, I knew I’d be missing Cameron and I wanted to let Cole hang with his buddies.
"Aint that weird? Going to a strip club with your man?" He asked, putting Cam's pacifier back in his mouth.
"Not really. Im used to it," i said, "but he doesn't even go anymore. This will be the first time he's gone since Cam was born. But why are you going to a female strip club when you don't like girls is the real question?"
"Male strip clubs aint the same," he shrugged. "Only thing is i know Ty attracted to females so that's gonna be a bit weird." I went around the kitchen making something to eat for all of us. I started cutting stuff up for a salad and warming a bottle for Cameron. Cole came to sit at the island.
"Im sure he'll behave himself," i said. "He's marrying you, so clearly he's not checking for anyone else, male or female" i assured him. He nodded.
“Did you get nervous before your wedding?” He asked. I nodded.
“Hell yeah. You know i was a mess leading up to it. I had a panic attack day of too," i laughed remembering. "You getting nervous bout it?"
"A little," he shrugged. It was odd to see Cole unsure or worried about anything. He was always so care free, go with the flow type of guy.
"It'll go away once you see him on the day," i assured him. He nodded in agreement.
"One more week to go," he said.
Cayden
I was in meetings all day today which was tiring. Sometimes this job was more tiring than drug dealing, which i ever expected. I really liked doing something different though. When i thought about it, i kind of did the same thing when i was in charge of the warehouses, i handled all the business behind the dealing. Negotiated with cartels, contracted people, allocated supplies. That's pretty much what i did now, just not with drugs. I was really into the whole tech thing too, the dudes i worked with were crazy smart, inventing apps and shit.
After my meetings i went to my office to check my emails. I checked my phone too and saw the message from Randi thanking me for the flowers.
There was also a message from Keisha which I opened. It was a photo of her son after a basketball game. Yes, i had stayed in touch with her, because that was my nephew, and the circumstances didn’t change that. Randi was all for it and we’d even have him over sometimes. So I’d see him here and there and she kept me up to date on what he was doing. I chuckled a little at his big gap smile, he looked so much like Trey it scared me at times. The more I was getting to know him the more I saw Trey in him, and that made me feel like my brother was still here.
After replying some emails I finally made my way home. It was an hour past Cameron’s bed time which meant I wouldn’t get to hang with him before he slept. I walked around downstairs and when I didn’t see Randi I went upstairs. I could hear her in the nursery. I walked over quietly and stood by the door. Randi was bouncing Cameron in her arms while he was fussing. She was so small he took up her whole torso now and he was only 1.
“Shhh, Mommy’s got you Cam ” she said softly, rubbing his back in circles. He finally got quiet and she went to put him back in his crib. She turned on the rain machine for him because he loved that shit and couldn't sleep without it. She finally turned towards the door and she jumped when she saw me, putting her hand to her chest.
“Jesus Cay, how long you been standing there?”
“Not long, but I can watch you with him all day,” i said, going up to wrap my arms around her waist. Her hair was all messed up, coming out of the bun she had, and she was wearing sweats, but she still looked fine. I looked over her head to Cam in his crib. “I tried to get home before he went to sleep," i said. I had stayed at the office later than usual.
“You just missed him. He woke up from a bad dream,” she frowned.
“I know what you’re thinking. We didn’t give him bad dreams Ran, he’s a baby, probably just wanted some attention” i could read her mind. Randi had this theory that Cameron inherited bad dreams from us because sometimes he would wake up crying or screaming. We both had a history of bad dreams so maybe it was possible but I still assured her that wasn’t the case.
“You don’t know that,” she mumbled. I tugged a piece of her hair.
"Come on, you gonna wake him up," i said, pulling her out of the room. I dragged her into our room so i could change. "I talked to Ty today, the suit is ready. Can you pick it up tomorrow for me?"
"Yeah, i have to go pick up my dress anyways," she said. "I'm so excited, I can’t believe this is finally happening" she smiled, folding her legs.
"Im just surprised neither one of them backed out yet, i thought for sure Ty would have wigged out by now," i said, taking my shirt off.
"Cole is the one I was worried about. He came over earlier, he was freaking out a little," she said, grabbing my shirt and straightening it out. "But i told him that was normal. I was loosing my shit before our wedding, but if i made it down the aisle, he can."
"True. I deadass thought you weren't gonna show up to our wedding,"i laughed remembering.
"Thought about running, my dad dragged me out of that room though," she laughed as well.
"Your ass lucky i still married you after making a nigga self conscious and shit," i mumbled. It was easy trying to lock her down. She grabbed my arm.
"I been lucky since the night you drove me home from the club," she said, referring to the first time we met. I thought back to that night and where we were now. "Even though you didn't say one word to me that whole car ride."
"I was having a bad day," i chuckled, "it wasn't personal. And i showed up to your house the next day didn't i. And day after that, and pretty much everyday after."
"You were,” she nodded. I sat down beside her and pulled her in to me. “I think that’s why I liked you. You were consistent, and I needed that,” she said like she was deep in thought. “Who would have thought back then that we'd be married and have a kid together?"
"I thought so," i said with a loud laugh. She looked at me like i was crazy. "Dead ass. I knew after that first day, that was it, you was the one. I never just wanted to be around someone all the time before,” I played with her hair.
“Why do you say all the right things?” She said softly, looking back at me.
“I also say the wrong things sometimes,” I reminded her. “You was just mad at me yesterday.”
“That’s true,” she gave me a side eye remembering the petty argument we had gotten into. We didn’t really fight like that anymore. Having a kid together made other things seem irrelevant, and we had a different level of respect for each other now as his parents.
“You know what’s weird? Like a year ago we probably would have been sorting through duffle bags of coke right now,”I said randomly. She laughed.
“Yup, I’d be counting, estimating profits,” she shook her head, “that feels like a life time ago.”
“You was really ride or die for a nigga,” I said, “even when shit was hot,” I looked at the scar on my rib and thought about how she had taken care of me.
“I knew what I signed up for. It was hard for me after the shooting though, I can’t lie. After that day...I knew I was done. Then I got pregnant, and that just pushed me to say what had been in my mind for a long time, it was all about Cam from that moment on,” she played with my hand in hers. “Do you miss all that?”
“Nah. I was done with that part of my life. I was already starting my plan to get out before you told me, but that just made it that much more important to do it. I knew the life you wanted and I wanted to give it to you, and to our kid” I looked over her face. She nodded and we sat in silence for a little bit. After some time she looked down and put a hand to her stomach.
“Sometimes I miss having him inside of me,” she smiled. I raised a brow.
“Does that mean you ready for a second one?” I said excited, pulling her closer in to me.
“Hey don’t get excited. We talked about this, we said next year,” she reminded me, pushing me away.
“We gotta start now if we gonna get 5 out the way before we old,” I said. She leaned back and looked at me like i was insane. I tried to kiss her and she was trying to run away.
“Cayyyyy” she complained as I planted my lips on her neck.
Cole
***a week later***
Today was the day, and to say I was nervous was an understatement. I had never been this nervous to step out on the football field, or even when I came out to my family. This was different. I knew I wanted to be with Ty forever, but it was the idea of ‘marriage’ that made it all so fucking scary.
It was funny to me because this was all Ty’s idea. He had asked me to marry him. It had crossed my mind too but I wasn’t sure he wanted all that. I was happy to just be whatever we were. Living together was the main thing I had wanted and I got that.
Our families now loved each other and we were both in good places with them. My mom and I were the closest we had ever been, which I wouldn’t have expected 3 years ago after all the family drama. But this wedding was a big part of why we came together. She wanted to be there for me and was happy to see me happy. She was helping me tie my bow tie, and crying while doing it.
“I’m really happy for you Cole” she said, “I can tell Ty is in love with you, and it’s clear you love him.”
“I do,” I said.
“All I’ve ever wanted was this for you. I know it may not always have seemed like it. I just hate that we weren’t on good terms for so long,” she wiped a tear, “when you’re my only son. I know now that I was wrong,” she said.
“I was wrong too mama. I was so angry I couldn’t put my pride aside and fix things with you,” I admitted.
“Well, that’s all in the past now. The important thing is everything is how it should be now. Just me and my baby,” she said with a smile.
“I love you mama” I said, kissing her cheek.
“I love you too baby,” she patted my cheek. “There, you look handsome as ever. That Ty is so lucky he scored you.”
“You ready to walk me down the aisle?” I asked, holding my arm out. Both of our mothers were walking us down. Ty was supposed to go first and I knew he was already there and waiting for me. That made me excited. The music started playing then and my stomach flipped.
“That’s our cue,” my mom said, opened the doors to the ceremony room.
I could see Ty standing there on a suit, something I hadn’t seen since Cayden and Randi’s wedding, anxiously waiting. He was touching the cuffs on his shirt but then looked up and made eye contact with me. We both smiled and the nerves and anxiety melted away.
The reception was lit. We had a DJ and all our friends and family were on the dance floor. A slow song came on and Ty grabbed me to dance with him. I had been separated from him for a while talking to people.
“I feel like I haven’t seen you in forever,” he said. I smirked.
“Awe you missed me?” I said. He rolled his eyes.
“Maybe,” He said.
“Well you bout to be stuck with me for a real long time now if that makes you feel any better.”
“I still can’t believe we’re married, that’s kind of lame,” he said, looking at the ring on his hand.
“Yeah but it’s cute. We still gonna be the same so,” i shrugged.
“Yeah, I’m glad we did it. For our families too,” he looked around at the people around us and I did the same. There was a lot of people happy to see us happy, and that touched both of us since not everyone was ok with our life style. I spotted Randi then, standing just off the dance floor holding Cameron on her hip. Cayden had his arm around her. I winked at her and she winked back. Both our lives had turned around in a matter of a couple years, and we were happier than ever. It made a nigga a bit emotional. I had been at her wedding and now she was at mine, that was some movie shit.
“I hope your winking at your mother, or else I’m throwing hands,” Ty said, following my gaze. “Oh it’s Randi.”
“You jealous?” I teased.
“Y’all petty niggas deserve each other,” he said, shrugging. “The friendship still confuses me though,” he said.
“Me too. But I just know she been there for me like nobody else, other than you. She was my family when I wasn’t on good terms with mine,” I explained.
“I get that,” he nodded.
“Now i have it all, my family,my friends, and you,” i smirked. He smiled back at me and pulled me in to kiss me.We kissed like it wasn’t a room full of people.
Randi
I was standing watching Cole and Ty be cute when my mom came and took Cam from me.
“You two go dance,” she said, nodding at the dance floor. Cayden took my hand and pulled me in that direction. He put his arms around my waist and I put mine over his shoulders.
“This reminds me of our first dance,” I said, grinning like a little kid. “I’m just missing the dress, and I have an extra 30 pounds on me now but other than that,” I laughed. He slipped his hands to my butt as if we weren’t in public.
“I like the way you look now,” he said, “you sexy as hell to me,” sliding his hands around to my hips, “Shit, i been thinking about taking that dress off all night,”
“Thank you Baby,” I said, “you make me feel sexy.” He really did, even when I was pregnant and blowing up, or now when my body was still not the way it used to be.
When we got home I wanted to take off my makeup and shower so Cay signed up to put Cameron to sleep. I took a quick shower and then went to peak in the nursery wondering what was taking him so long. Cayden was sitting in the rocking chair with Cameron in his lap and a book in his hands. I stood outside listening for a while and i laughed quietly at the voices he gave all the characters. Creating a human with someone changed the relationship forever. Yes i loved him even before i had his baby, but loving Cameron together on top of loving each other was a strange and powerful thing.Plus him being caring and protective was such a turn on and made me wanna give him 5 more kids. He was such a hands on dad too, which i knew he would be. When Cam was first born all I really did was breastfeed or pump, Cayden changed all the diapers, got him cleaned and dressed, and took him when I needed sleep. That’s the kind of husband and dad he was.
"Randi I know you eavesdropping" he said once he was finished the book.
"What?! how did you know?" I moved into view and then walked inside the room.
"I could hear your ass laughing," he said, "You just salty he likes my reading better."
"You are really good at story time," i smiled, sitting on his lap beside Cameron. I looked at his adorable face and took him in like i did several times a day in disbelief at how perfect he was. The best part was he now had freckles coming in slowly just like Cayden’s. I touched his cheek and then Cayden's, comparing.
"Why you not in bed?" Cayden asked.
"Well, I had to tell you something really important," i said seriously like i was gonna drop some big news. His brows came together in confusion.
"What?"
"I been wanting to say this for a while..." i said, dragging it out. "But i wasn't sure how."
"You can tell me anything," he said, rubbing my arm. I sighed then paused.
"Ok, here it goes," i said, "Cayden, i...love you" i grinned. He kissed his teeth and tried to push me off him. I laughed and grabbed on to his neck to stay on. "Babe!" i pleaded, fighting to stay on while he was pushing me.
"Why you waste my time like you was gonna say something important," he said annoyed. He was really mad. I giggled and cupped his cheek.
"Im sorry," i said. "But i really have been wanting to tell you how much i love you," i said. His face changed to a little less mad. “I know I don’t always show my appreciation for you, and I’m not good at the romantic stuff like you, but I just wanted you to know that i do thank God everyday for you. You keep me grounded, and you're my rock” I finished. His cheeks were pink which was so adorable. He hated being complimented and never knew how to respond. He closed the space between us and kissed me tenderly.
“I told you i always got you, and I love you too." Cam grabbed my shirt then and i smiled down at him and picked him up. I held him close to me and he immediately closed his eyes. I looked from him to Cayden, and then back at him and i felt everything I couldn’t years ago during the darkest period of my life. I was filled with hope, and joy, and a fierce love for life.

Please allow me to share with you what is, in my opinion, the greatest thing I've ever written. And I'm not being sarcastic. This is my single most favorite scene of anything I have ever written.
TW: mention of a wound and some blood (nothing graphic)
(and if you read this and start to think "she forgot the TW for main character death!" I promise you I didn't. He doesn't die-- in this or in the novel at all!)
--
“I swear to god.” Cam huffs, nearly collapsing alongside Cayden as he tries to slowly lower him to the ground. “If you think you can die by someone else’s hand—”
“What are you going to do?” Cayden rasps around a painful, choked off breath as he falls to the ground unceremoniously— and far more quickly than Cam intended, if his wince of sympathy pain is any indication.
He’d attempted to limp as much of it as he could but somehow, even when he was making an active effort to go as fast as he possibly could, it was slower than if Cam just dragged him.
And that wasn’t strictly true— for a while now, Cam had been caring for him and trying to tend to him in ways that felt similar to the love his mother had but somehow entirely different.
Maybe it’s because a small part of Cayden is afraid that he actually is dying right now, afraid that any of these words could truly be his last.
I—“ He takes a shuddering breath and raises a hand to gently cradle the back of Cam’s head.
Please? For me?”
“That’s not fair.” Cayden coughs once and it rattles his whole frame. His ribs feel like they’re bumping into each other as he does, loose and brittle and just as close to falling apart as the rest of him is.
