Mr. Bynoe, however, found a piece of crab in one; but this might have got in accidentally, in the same manner as I have seen a caterpillar, in the midst of some lichen, in the paunch of a tortoise.

After parasites decimated the first batch, I’ve been bringing monarch caterpillars inside to let them safely make their chrysalises. They get transferred out to my cucumber trellis once they’re solid enough to move.
Current tally is
Five tiny hatchlings in their own jar
Five big guys who will likely make their chrysalises this week in a second jar
One medium sized one in quarantine for a suspicious scar
Two fresh chrysalises on the cucumber trellis
Three safely hatched butterflies!

do you like platyhelminths? :) flatworms are some of my favorite animals, particularly planarians (<33) and tapeworms. i know they really scare some people but i adore them and think they're really underappreciated!
I love platyhelminthes! Totally underrated group of critters. Fun fact the word “Platyhelminthes” can be rearranged into “Lethal Penis Myth” (I have a thing for anagrams and was bored in marine bio once).
I love how much balls to the wall insanity is present in the phylum. They really just do whatever the hell they want and it rules. Here are my top five crazy platyhelminthes behaviors
1. The tapeworm that somehow triples the lifespan of an ant in order to facilitate its own life cycle.
2. The marine flatworms that engage in penis fencing to decide who has to carry the offspring.
3. The tapeworm with such a complex life cycle that it is capable of influencing the brains of two wildly different host species (crustacean copepods and bony fish).
4. The fluke that turns a snail’s eyes into pulsating caterpillar-like sacs for a bird to eat.
5. The tapeworms that are being studied for their immunomodulatory properties that could someday lead to treatments for everything from colitis to arthritis.

The jabberwock ghouls as cats

Wc: ~700
Notes: I have been thinking, would Lyca also be a cat or should he be a puppy?
Haru
He is a red Abyssinian cat with an almost strikingly unnatural bright colour.
He has a darker colored leg that he doesn't put too much weight on and he seems to react nicely when you massage it slowly.
He has a favorite toy that you got him when he was a kitten in your first shopping spree with him, a small bunny-like creature that you named ‘peekaboo’.
He is so insistent on being outside as soon as you allow him to go as late as allowed, running around and around chasing leaves and bugs and bringing his little friend along. If he doesn't get his 3 hours minimum of outside time he acts so nervously pacing around the house.
Cares so much about little creatures like his peekaboo and any other stuffie that he can carry on his mouth that he adopted baby Ren the same day he came, always licking him clean and dragging him around to show him some bug in the backyard.
Even though cats sleep more than twelve hours he is always zooming around rearranging leaves, herding groups of similar cat toys that he makes Towa ‘supervise’ or dragging Ren back out after he escaped and hid under the sofa. All of this he does always accompanied by his favorite baby, peekaboo.
At night for being such a responsible kitty cat and taking care of the house he gets a tiny cup of catnip tea to relax a bit before sleeping.
Towa
Given he was a stray you doubt he is truly any race of cat but he looks a lot like a ragdoll cat, his hair fully white and some beautiful blue eyes (they almost look lilac under the sunlight)
He was originally a stray but for some reason soon after Haru came he started hanging around your house enough for you to say he is yours.
He is either hanging around Haru or fucking around God knows where, it isn't strange for him to disappear.
The quietest cat ever?? You have never seen him meow when serving food or playing, even then he does make himself known, rubbing himself on you and purring a ton. You do think he might be who meows horribly loud at night but whenever you check there is nobody there.
He seems to like eating flowers better than his kibble or wet food. Even you asked the vet and she ran tests the best she could give you was ‘he probably just likes the taste, I wouldn't worry too much about it’
He is quite a cuddly cat with both you and Haru, but for some reason he detests the little kitten, striking him whenever Haru isn't looking or dragging him away from your lap to lay in his place.
Sometimes whenever Haru licks Ren he might start licking him and it's like a little grooming ball
Ren
An exotic shorthair kitten that was too disobedient his owner considered him untrainable and gave him to you.
The only one of the bunch who doesn't look out the window, doesn't want to go out, will not even step on a blade of grass. At least on his own volition, he doesn't have much choice when Haru drags him to watch a caterpillar.
The baby snuggles up to you under your blankets, plushies and pillows as he purrs softly between your legs.
Please buy him one of those cat beds that look like a shark, he loves watching marine biology documentals from there
Whenever you use electronics like TV or tablets he will be hanging by your shoulder and might paw at it like the fruit ninja cat. That is the closest thing to playing he does.
Maybe he absorbs Haru's need of sleep because he is always sleeping or dozing off under the sunlight, even the vet was worried but it seems he is just really lazy
Unluckily, Haru can slip under the wardrobe and your bed so he is never safe. He even has a knack for knowing when he is relaxed enough to take him off guard and strike giving him to fighting chance

Sea Mouse (Aphrodita aculeata)
Distribution: Found in marine habitats of the northern hemisphere; the North Atlantic, North Sea, Baltic Sea and the Mediterranean Sea.
Habitat: Benthic; lives from the sublittoral zone down to a maximum of 1000 metres.
Diet: Carnivorous; feeds mainly on other invertebrates such as small crabs, hermit crabs, mollusks, nemerteans and other polychaete worms.
Description: Despite its caterpillar-like appearance, the sea mouse is actually a polychaete worm! Its most obvious feature is the dense mat of hairs, or setae, that cover its body. While most are a brownish-red colour, these are intermingled with glassy hairs (especially on either side of its body), which have an iridescent quality. These hairs are usually reddish in colour, but become a bright bluish-green when the light hits them a certain way. This acts as a defence mechanism to ward off predators, acting as a form of aposematism, but also acts as camouflage, with the worms appearing brown from above (blending in with the substrate) and blue from the sides (blending in with the water).

Parasitoidism and Deep Sea Mechs
Tumblr media
ID: A white/ transluscent crustacean inside of a barrel-like jelly structure that is transparent. They are set against a black background.
This shrimp-like creature is a type of deep sea amphipod called Phronima, referred affectionately by some as a barrel bug. Look! It's got a little house for itself! How did it get there? Why is it doing that? Oh god, what does this have to do with the title of this post?
Parasitoidism is an extreme form of parasitism where the host will eventually die. This is different from the other types of parasitism where there may be detriments to the host, but they rarely die as a direct result of the parasitism. Think of a flea - they might suck their host's blood and they may cause damage to it, but one flea will never suck so much blood as to kill the host (of course, it may later die of a disease transmitted by the flea). For a parasite killing the host isn't the best strategy, because then you are essentially destroying your home, your restaurant and your social life all at the same time.
Tumblr media
ID: An orange parasitoid wasp sits on top of a bristly caterpillar, with its sting buried inside its victim. They are both sat on a leaf, and the picture is taken close up so that the finer veins of the leaf are visible.
Parasitoidism, on the other hand, eventually results in the death of the host due to the extreme amount of resources taken from it. Most famously, parasitoid wasps lay eggs inside a paralysed host, keeping it alive long enough for its offspring to hatch and consume it. Some larvae even eat non-essential organs first to keep their hosts alive for as long as possible as they grow. Apparently Charles Darwin thought this was so fucked up he questioned whether his God was truly omnipotent or benevolent if such a creature existed.
Tumblr media
ID: A picture of a sea salp, a type of marine invertebrate. It has a transparent, jelly-like body that is somewhat tube shaped. Inside the body are two major structures: an orange, spherical mass to the right hand end, and an opaque, white rod-like structure that runs along the body (right to left in the picture). It is set against a dark background.
Anyway, that jelly-like structure that the Phronima is sitting in, it's not something that it made itself through some bodily secretion or scavenging. It's actually the hollowed-out body of an animal called a salp, which is a type of tunicate (these can sometimes form massive colonies, hopefully have a post coming about that at some point).
The Phronima eats the inside of the salp then climbs inside the remaining tunic, in which it makes its home and lays its eggs. It then proceeds to pilot the carcass around like a fucking mech, steering it through the deep sea. Moving its new mobile home round like this allows fresh water and food to flow in through the front, nourishing the happy new homeowner and eventually its larvae once they hatch.
Of course, at this point the salp is likely dead and has been for a while, which is what makes this parasitoidism.
Hope you enjoyed! Have excellent nightmares.
