Its library, the Biblioteca General Histórica, is a haven of knowledge, housing rare manuscripts that take you back in time.
Cathedrals of Salamanca
Standing in testament to the city's rich architectural heritage are the Old (Catedral Vieja) and New (Catedral Nueva) Cathedrals, both showcasing an impressive blend of Gothic and Renaissance styles. SALAMANCA
English: How beautiful the Cathedral of Salamanca is. I think that my favorite part of the excursions is the visits to the churches. There is a lot of history and beauty in every part of the cathedrals. There are rich colors and elaborate designs. I’m always in awe of the detail and especially of the saints’ tombs. Many of the people that are buried there are more than 500 years old. It is very weird to see something so old and with a lot of importance to the Catholic Church. The cathedral is the tallest I’ve seen.
I paid to enter the roof of the church and the top of the bell tower. I talked with my friends when we were climbing the stairs about the antiques on every floor. There were antiques that were more than 900 years old. How weird to think that a piece of paper that old has been conserved and still can communicate with us now, even though it’s in Latin. When we arrived at the top, we walked around and looked at the entire city. There are about 10 bells there. Also, there’s graffiti on all the walls. Even the graffiti is really old and was written with the blood of a bull in Latin. At the half hour, the bells sounded and we left. The photo that I included is when I am on the top floor in the church. I was scared because I don’t like heights but I’m happy I had the opportunity to see it.

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = The building began at a time when the gothic style was becoming less popular and was merging with the new Renaissance style, giving the resulting Plateresque style in Spain. However, this cathedral retained more of its Gothic character because the authorities wanted the new cathedral to blend with the old one. Thus the new cathedral was constructed, continuing with Gothic style during the 17th and 18th centuries. However, during the 18th century, two elements were added that broke with the showy form with the predominant style of the building: a Baroque cupola on the transept and the final stages of the bell tower (92 m). The new cathedral was constructed without the subsequent destruction of the old cathedral as normally happened but a wall of the new cathedral, leans on the North wall of the old one. For this reason, the old cathedral had to be reinforced, and the bell tower was constructed on the old one. Two of the main architects of the cathedral were Juan Gil de Hontañón and his son Rodrigo Gil de Hontañón in 1538.
