Cat Quirk

A/N: Surprisingly, I really like writing for Seiji and Inasa- v underrated bois (along with Neito) 

Monoma Neito:

Neito loves to both partner with you and fight against you when sparring. He loves how well you can take others down and with your quirk boosting the ability of winning- or at least dodging a few hits- it’s always a treat to be partnered with you. If you two fight against each other, it’s a great way for him to learn how to copy and use your quirk but he isn’t a fan of the cat characteristics that come with them.

If you rest on him, he’ll make sure you’re comfortable and take a few pictures of you. He’s quite fond of how cute you look. He appreciates the level of trust you have around him and will pet your ears while you nap. Your tail will swish, brushing along the end of his nose and your ears perk at the slightest sound but he’ll shush you back to sleep, rubbing at your back and stroking your ears.

He’s going to tease. He likes to flick at your ears, commenting on how soft they are. The teasing is light and doesn’t last for long. Oftentimes, he’ll find his hand petting the back of your ears and once he catches what he’s doing, he stops and finds how well you’re liking it. Your head is tilted to his palm, eyes closed and chin jutted out a bit. He smiles softly, tilting his head to match yours and trying to keep a steady rhythm to keep you content.

He can often be loud without realizing that he is and he doesn’t focus on his surroundings so when you start to get agitated, it’s your hissing that puts him at a stop. He sees how your eyes are narrowed and teeth are bared, he immediately stops and apologizes. He’ll bring you whatever you need and will be hesitant to touch you unless you crawl to him first.

When Neito hears you purr against him, he’s choking on his spit and tensing up. He becomes increasingly flustered as you turn onto your back and stretch, your shirt rising and exposing a bit of your stomach and he’s dying above you. He’ll be hesitant to touch at your stomach and pull the instant that his fingers meet you, only to squeak as you cup your hand with his and press it down and then bring it up to your face to nuzzle into his hand. If you slow blink, he’s going to math your speed only to flutter away at the end and rest his head on your shoulder.

Shinso Hitoshi:

Hitoshi is constantly teasing you. It’s a sly smile on his face as he pets you, calling you “Whiskers” or any other variants of typical cat names. His teasing is usually done behind closed doors, and while it's somewhat constant, it isn’t anything harsh. Cat names turn into words of endearment, the cat toy he bought on a whim sits on the coffee as decoration, and his smile is still there, softer but still coy.

He likes cats and therefore he likes you. He likes spending time with you. While he attracts people who are extroverts, he enjoys the peace and quiet that you bring. You’re calm and will lay on his lap, the day spent in stillness as you two just unwind from the pressures that the outside world has to offer. He just enjoys that with you, he can recharge his social battery as you lay on him or sit next to him, your hands entangled in his hair as you brush out any strands.

He’s always wary when you start to get agitated. He can see the way your ears tense and how you’re hissing will hold a bit of malice as the fur on your body stands on its end. During those times, he asks if you need anything- if you’ve eaten or had water, or if you simply want to go for a walk to let your energy loose. If you rather not, he’ll let you come to him at your own pace and will be careful to touch you, letting your hands guide where you want him to pet.

Anytime that you’re close to swatting at something, he immediately moves it. He gets that cats will swipe, but if you break his favorite mug, he will get the spray bottle. There’s a slight narrow of his brows when the spray bottle doesn’t work and he’ll roll his eyes, throwing his hands up in mock surrender as he walks away. He enjoys the little swipes, batting you away and pinching at your tail lightly. That being said, he loves playing with your tail, watching as it curls around his wrist or thigh absentmindedly, the fur soft around him.

Hitoshi knows about the love language that cats have so he knows a lot about your love language and tendencies. He knows about the slow blink and will mimic it, he lets you rest on his chest and curl your fingers into his hair, lightly pawing at his head. He’ll click his tongue if you lay above something of his and simply roll his eyes as he pulls it out from underneath you. The first time he sees you with your tummy facing up, he gets flustered and will hesitantly rest his hand on the soft part of your belly and give you a soft rub.

Shishikura Seiji:

Seiji has quite a knack for knowing when you’re using your quirk. You’ll come in with a mischievous grin and exclaim that the vending machine gave you two of your favorite snacks. He’ll give you a pointed look and tell you not to misuse your quirk, ignoring the sticked out tongue that you give him. He rolls his eyes when you tell him it’s part of quirk training and will shake his head.

He can tell when you’re starting to get ansty- your bouncing legs, twitching ears and ears that stand pointed. He’ll sigh and his hand will morph, floating away and he watches as you dart around trying to catch it, hands that swipe and agile jumps with incredible precision that surprises him. He invests in a laser pointer the next day and hides his smile as you try to catch it between your hands.

He’s extremely perceptive to your feelings. He’ll give you your own space when you need it, trying to not agitate you and if you come up to him for comfort, he’s curling his palm on the side of your face, fingers that softly curl into gentle pats as you coo and nuzzle into his palm. He always has a soft smile at these actions, proud that he was able to make you feel better. He’ll tease lightly, commenting how you seem to be in a more kittenish mood as he lets his hands flutter over you, chuckling at how you try to half-heartedly swipe at his hand. He’ll curl his hand around your tail, grabbing the appendage and watching at it flicks and curls with his touch.

He loves to play with your tail. He likes seeing how it curls and flicks and will puff at times when you playfully hiss. It’s one of the few moments where he’s much more playful than usual. Running his hands over your tail, feeling the muscles tense and coil around him, lightly booping at his nose, fluttering until he sneezes.

When you blink at him slowly Seiji finds himself turning his head quickly in order to hide the blush that creeps on his face. He knows what it means, he researched a lot about cats soon after you two became friends. He’s been on the receiving end of slow  blinks before but now it feels much more intimate. He’ll cough and stutter, looking away as you nuzzle into his neck and slowly his arm will wrap behind your head and pet at your crown.

Yoarashi Inasa:

If you two are together, there is a high likelihood that Inasa will have his hand behind an ear, fingers that lightly scratch at the base or smooth over from the tip to the base, ruffling at the fur, leaving it standing on ends due to how much he just has his hands on you. If his hand isn’t one your ear, it’s on the top of your head, palm flat as he just rests his hand on you. He plays with your ears a lot- it’s a huge comfort for him.

Inasa has major golden retriever energy- he is just so eager and has this smile on his face and oftentimes his energy does rub off on you but there are times you rather be in a quieter environment. He tries his best to be respectful to your wishes and for the most part he can succeed but there are times where he’ll break the silence or his petting will become too overstimulating. At that point, he’ll apologize and try to give you the space that you need.

He loves it when you rest your head on his lap and just curl your body and sleep on him. He is not going to disturb your sleep even if you claim that it’s fine. He’ll play a game on his phone or go back to playing with an ear, watching as it twitches to his touch, only to pull his hand away and rest in your shoulder. He always seems to be aware of when you’re going to pounce on him even if he has his back turned to you. He’ll let you attack but you can tell by the way his shoulders straighten and hands drop whatever he’s holding that he knows and was prepared for your “attack”.

Because you’re a bit more subdued than he is in terms of energy, he often just lets you lay on him during days off. You get to choose the activity and he’ll follow along and if it happens to just be resting, he’ll nod and agree. He’s careful to initiate touch with you, not wanting to overstimulate you, so when you go and curl up on him, resting your head against his chest, he’s placing his hand on your thigh in a protective grip and sitting there. He won’t comment on the purring, rather just wanting to hear it and ruin the comfort you have. He’ll bring it up later, telling you how cute it was as he pats your head.

It took Inasa a while to understand your love language. The way your pupils grow bigger around him, how you rub your face into the crook of his neck, blinking slowly or even just laying on your back near him. He knew it was a form of affection but he wasn’t quite sure what it meant so when he blinks at you slowly, you’re taken aback and he laughs, stroking a thumb on your ear and commenting how he picked up a few things.

Bakugou took to the skies while his partner swerved between sedans and work trucks parked bumper-to-bumper on the roadway. Bakugou’s boots skid on the rough gravel of rooftops as he blasted from one to the next, his scorching propellant warping the air behind him, leaving trails of Schlieren lines in his wake.

He crouched on the edge of a four-story building above the battle, glimpses of a hero battle raging beneath the haze of ash and concrete dust. Heroes with water-based quirks tried and failed to mitigate the damage of six gangly beams of red-hot light.

“Riot, you got eyes?” he asked into his earpiece.

“Not directly on the prize, but I’m getting intel now! Are you seeing how the beams flicker in and out?”

“Yeah. Probably low level of quirk control or erratic mentality. Or both.”

“The team leader on the ground says the villain’s in a donut hole of concrete. Rubble’s piled up on all sides, so no one can get to him.”

Bakugou rolled his eyes. “Amateurs.” The villain probably got himself cornered in a pit of fallen debris and figured he could wait it out or cause enough damage to try to make a run for it. “Shock Diamond, then.”

“Now?! Finally?! Hell yeah, let's go!"

Bakugou felt the heat of the lasers as one shaved the side of his building. He sneered at the heroes doing a piss-poor job of containment and checked behind him for the extent of the damage. A singed line gouged into the wall of a parking garage, but it stopped with a blunted tip before it speared the next building. The lasers didn’t seem to work like Aoyama’s — they could only extend so far.

Not that he was worried about his partner. Kirishima could handle himself.

Even if Bakugou did pack the idiot a lunch every day and nudge him to go to bed when he fell asleep on the couch. Catching the current mid-air, he soared closer to where Kirishima was probably charging into the fray. Bakugou used the familiar shock of red hair as his signal and dropped feet-first, sending down a counterblast to stick the landing. 

As Dynamight set himself up directly behind Red Riot, they charged the villain in a single-file line. 

Without missing a beat, Kirishima extended his arms behind him at the same time Bakugou pushed his chest into the other man’s back. Kirishima’s arms locked onto Bakugou’s sides.

Bakugou tucked his chin, extended his hands behind him, and sent out a blinding explosion.

They rocketed forward — an unbreakable wall and a ballistic force. The perfect offense and defense. Explosion and Hardening. 

Dynamight and Red Riot: Shock Diamond.

As they smashed through the rubble, the devastating strength of Red Riot’s quirk wracked through Bakugou’s body, but Kirishima held him tightly against his back. The shock waves cleared from Bakugou’s spine, and he jumped into the rapidly-clearing fog of smoke and dust.

His eyes widened. He whipped his head from side to side. He stopped, listened.

The pit was empty.

Meeting his partner’s eyes, Bakugou could only think of one thing to say. “What the fuck?!”

But Red Riot was similarly dumbfounded, his brows furrowed and jaw hanging slack, glancing around the center of the crater.

Bakugou kicked at a fallen pebble, its mere presence offensive in the heat of his frustration. 

“Dynamight! Red Riot!” An aged hero with a sky blue costume ran toward them, waving his arms in ridiculous circles and spraying arcs of water through the air. “Good work out there!”

“We didn’t do shit! We just busted through a wall!”

"What Bakugou means to say is 'thank you', sir!”

“Well, the guy’s a problem for tomorrow’s heroes now. I’ve sent a team to scout the perimeter, and the police have his mugshot and quirk info. Another group is putting out the last of the fires. We’re lucky it’s a weekend — no one in those office buildings meant no casualties.” The older hero jiggled and sloshed as he rested his hands on his service belt, the edges of his existence just barely see-through as his costume molded to his mutation quirk. “For now, we need you two to handle some of the media coverage while we start to get a section of road opened back up.”

“No problem! Leave it to us!”

Flubber strode off, his boots leaving wet footprints on the asphalt.

Bakugou turned to his partner. “No.”

"Hey— where are you going?! You can't just leave the press to me all the time!"

Huffing, Bakugou slipped through an unblocked alleyway, brushing concrete crumbs off his shoulders as he took deep breaths. Normally he would feel some semblance of guilt about leaving a crime scene or abandoning Kirishima to fend off the harpies on his own, but the villain did escape. Bakugou might as well join the search of the perimeter.

A sharp scream had his feet slapping the pavement before his brain caught up.

Rounding the corner of an office park, the street opened up to allow for a municipal park one block long and one wide. Amidst swing sets and jungle gyms stood a proud maple tree. In one of its branches clung a girl no more than six years old.

Below her, a group of parents huddled in a crescent moon around the trunk, some gawking, some enjoying the entertainment, and others consoling one woman in the center of it all. Bakugou made a beeline for her.

She jumped at the hulking form of a grenade-adorned hero. He never tried very hard to work on his public image.

“Oh, Dynamight.” The whites of the woman’s eyes gaped in surprise, and she looked back and forth between the imposing hero and the girl high up in the tree. “She just— She feels more secure when she’s up high, and she got scared by all the noise and the lights, so she climbed into the tree, but now she can’t get back down and she’s too high for me to reach her, and I can’t climb up—”

“Stop.” The woman snapped her teeth closed with a click. “I’ll get her down.”

She didn’t look especially reassured. Shit. What would Kirishima do? Probably flash a smile and bang his fists together or some other cute-ass Kirishima-ism. Bakugou gave her a closed-mouth smile and a stiff pat on the shoulder instead. That’ll do.

Grasping a branch with one hand and placing the flat of his boot on the trunk, he hoisted himself into the tree. He climbed higher and higher, wary of the thinning branches. When he couldn’t fit on the remaining limbs, he lifted his arms out for the girl.

“C’mon, I’ll take you back to your mom.” His voice was soft, low, and practiced. The girl eyed him warily, but after catching a glimpse of her mom below, shuffled into Bakugou’s hold. “Good job. Just hold on to me like you did to the branch, okay?”

She nodded against his shoulder, and he began his climb back down.

“What’s your name?”

“Matatabi,” she mumbled.

“What were you doin’ that high up?”

“Wanted to catch it.”

He frowned, wondering what it was, but they had reached the bottom and he had reached his patience quota for the day. Especially when the girl threw a fit in his arms, hissing and wiggling, and pushing and scratching at him. “Oi!” He dropped her, and she scurried to her mom, leaving him with whiplash and three welts on his bicep.

“Oh. Oh, dear.” The mother looked like she was about to confess to murder. Great. “Did she scratch you?”

No shit. “Yes, but it’s completely understandable.”

“Ah, awe, thank you—” at least he got a smile out of that one “—but, um, there may be a bit of an issue?” Of course there is. “She seems to activate her quirk when she scratches or bites.” She grimaced, floundering for her next words.

He took a deep breath. It wasn’t the kid’s fault. “It’s fine. What should I expect with the effects?”

“Um. Cat?”

He blinked. “Cat?”

She nodded. “Cat.”

“Dynamight!”

They both looked up then to Red Riot’s jogging figure, dust and cement billowing behind his ass cape. 

“Everything alri-oh.” Kirishima was staring somewhere above Bakugou’s forehead, his mouth formed in the perfect ‘O’ shape.

“What are you looking at?!”

“Ears.”

Bakugou’s stomach fell into his butt. “What?”

“Bro… ears. You have… ears.”

“No.”

“Dude they look so soft.” Slow hands lifted higher and higher, above Bakugou’s face up to the top of his head. “Can I just—”

Bakugou slapped his hands away. “Don’t you dare,” he hissed.

Kirishima chortled— chortled! — and turned to the mother of the tree climbing, cat nabbing daughter.

Bakugou watched the exchange with clenched fists.

“I’m so sorry!” She bowed low, almost tipping her kid onto the ground. “Is she in trouble?”

“No, no!” Kirishima smiled at them. They seeped into it like a warm blanket on a cold day. “We’ll just get your contact information in case we have any further questions about the quirk—”

A sharp pain stung both of Bakugou’s palms. He hissed and checked his hands, tuning out the rest of Kirishima’s mediation.

Claws. He had ears and claws.

Well, at least he had another weapon now — that was pretty cool, actually. As soon as the thought passed through his head, the claws retracted into his nail beds, leaving behind his normal, blunt nails.

He felt his ears droop to the side of his head.

“So… do you want to head back to the agency?”

He looked up at his partner, giving him his best baleful glare with the ears and all. Kirishima just snorted. “There’s no way in Hell I’m going back there like this.”

“Awe, but you could be our new office mascot.” He reached forward to pet Bakugou’s ear again. He was unsuccessful. “Alright, alright,” he laughed, pulling out his phone, “let’s call Mirko and get our next orders, then.” The ringer blasted loud and clear, Kirishima holding his phone in selfie-mode.

“You little shit! She doesn’t need to see!”

They played a game of impromptu tag until their boss picked up. She, of course, immediately burst into guffaws of laughter. 

Bakugou was so ready for today to be over.

“Hey, boss! What, uh— What do you suggest we do here with uh, Cat...kugou?”

“I’ll kill you,” he whispered.

“Hell if I know, I’ve never needed flea prevention.” Bakugou balked. “Take him to the vet, I guess!”

“Yessir!” Kirishima hung up before Bakugou could even process the words that just came out of his boss’s mouth.

“I am not—” he huffed “—going—” huff “—to the fucking VET!”

She turned, frowning. “Oh, I’m so sorry — I know you’re hero partners, but technically the exam room is family only."

You were at your shared home relaxing after a long hard week, it was a cold winter morning. You felt the soft cream colored crochet blanket that Anne, Harry’s mother had made for you last Christmas.  Mouse yours and Harry’s cat came to sit next to you, Harry named her mouse because when she ‘meows’ she sounds like a little mouse.  She nestled her small head into your arm, you pet her head and scratched behind her ears. Looking at your phone background of Harry you smiled. It was a picture of him sitting on the set of SNL smiling like the goofball he is.  Mouse meowed when she saw the picture, “I miss him too sweetie” you say petting her as you get up and head to the kitchen.

Harry was off working on stuff for his second album, he was very busy and often wasn’t home for weeks. He was supposed to be home in a week, you understood his busy schedule.   You turned on the kettle to make some tea, prepping things for tea. You realized you actually pulled out two mugs and spoons as you normally would when making tea for you and Harry. You wiped a small tear away putting the other mug and spoon away again. You poured the steamy water into your mug with your preferred tea, and walked back into the living room. Sitting on the couch again with Mouse finding her way back to your side purring. You sipped on your warm tea feeling it warm you up.

You ended up falling asleep on the couch for a few hours, waking up to the sound of your laptop beeping at you. It was a Skype call.  ‘Sweet creature is requesting a video call’. You sat up and answered the call to see Harry in his car smiling at you.  “Hey Babe” he said adjusting the laptop on the dashboard of his car. He looked beautiful, the light on his face was pale and bright. He had his nails painted black and his favourite black sunglasses on his head. Hair tousled around the frames, light stubble on his jaw and upper lip, which you found absolutely attractive on him. He smiled at you admiring him through the screen. "Hello??? Y/n? Anyone home? " He said chuckling as you hadn't answered him yet .

You shook your head focusing on the conversation now. “Yes, I’m here sorry, got a little distracted. How are things going babe?” you say. You giggle positioning the computer again so he can see you he smiles, “I miss my girls, I-“he gets cut off by his phone ringing “One sec babe” he says answering it.  He’s on the phone for about a minute before hanging up the phone. “I’m really sorry babe I have to go do something” he says with a sympathetic smile. “It’s okay , I’ll see you later this week, I’m going to probably order some pizza then watch a movie with Mousey then go to bed” you say a little upset but trying not to show it.  “Alright I love you, bye” he says ending the call. 

You hadn't seen Harry in a month, you missed him so much. You missed the way he would pull you closer to cuddle in bed, resting his head in your shoulder. You missed his scent a light mint and vanilla smell, was his favourite cologne. You would spray it on your favourite sweater which was actually Harry's but he didn't mind you wearing it. You sat there in that thought for about 20 minutes, until the doorbell rang.  You thought ‘did I already order the pizza?’  Pulling out your wallet you walked to the door, digging in your wallet for cash you opened the door without looking. Then you looked up and saw Harry there in a dark grey sparkly Gucci suit with a black dress shirt, the first few buttons undone showing the edges of his chest tattoos. He was a holding a bouquet of light pink and coral roses, and a large black box. Smiling at you “Surprise Y\N”.  You almost fainted seeing him, instead you wrapped your arms around his neck, also wrapping your legs around his waist kissing him.  “I thought you were going to be back next week? “ You asked tearing up a bit. “Change of plans, things got done a lot faster than I thought. So I get to come home.” He says. “Oh Harry I missed you so much” You say hugging him tight. He puts you down and walks into the house, He hands you the box and sets the roses on the table.  “Go put that on we have reservations for dinner” he said pushing you upstairs to the bedroom, he walks downstairs to put the roses into some water.

You open the box, it’s a dress. A dark grey long dress, the same color as his suit.  It has a sweetheart neckline with small black gemstones across the top. You quickly styled your hair into a sweet up do with little hairs hanging out. Light amount of makeup, and some black strappy heels.  You admired yourself in the mirror, the dress hugged all of your curves before flaring out below the knee. It made you feel like a goddess.

You walked down the stairs to see Harry’s back facing you, kneeled down petting Mouse. She meows looking at you, Harry turns to see you before saying. “For the first time in my life I know the difference between pretty and beautiful” you blush and he leads you outside towards a black sparkly limo. Harry greets the driver "Hello Altman ", "Hello Mr.Styles, and hello to your lovely lady" the driver says shaking your hand. He opens the limo door helping you in. Harry joins you in the limo after telling the driver where to go.

After driving for a while the limo stops in front of a small looking building, it had slate stone walls and large windows, it looked dark inside with very little light. Altman opens the door helping you out with Harry behind you. The restaurant had the name on a sign near the doors, the sign said Buried Beneath. Harry held the door open for you as you walked in like the gentleman he is. The entry room was small you wonderd how this was a resturant . Walking to the small check in table there was a tall very thin man with thin rimmed black glasses. "Welcome to Buried Beneath, what is your code word? " the man asked. You were confused, Harry simply said "Eroda ". The man nodded typing into the tablet " Mr.Styles?" Harry nodded " Right this way" the man lead you two down a short hallway to some stairs going down. Harry helped you down the stairs until you entered an area. A short thin woman around maybe 40 years old leads you two into the dining area.

The dining area was dark with beautiful high ceilings and red lights, dark furniture and decorations. It was a bit overwhelming, Harry saw that you were a bit nervous so he put an arm around your waist comforting you. You could smell the familiar cologne on him, you relaxed as the woman brought you to your table it was in the back of the room a more private section. Harry pulled out your chair letting you sit before he did. A waiter came for your drink orders, Harry orders a bottle of their house wine for you to share. You shared a platter of seafood and salads. (Or whatever you like to eat) Everything tasted incredible, the wine was rich in flavor. Harry was telling you about what he was working on for his new album. About the word Eroda and what it meant, he told you there was a song to go with it and that it was going to be released in a few days for the fans.

After the meal was finished Harry paid the bill with a very generous tip, he also purchased 3 bottles of the red wine. He really enjoyed it. You left the restaurant Harry helped you into to limo again. It was dark out now with thousands of stars in the sky, it gave you butterflies in your stomach. You returned home and Harry led you to he bathroom helping you out of your dress placing it on the dresser along with your shoes. He started to run a bath with candles burning and bubble bath. You stood naked in front of him, he admired your figure tracing your collarbones tracing up to your jaw. Lifting your chin to kiss him, it was a long passionate kiss.

Harry then stripped naked and climbed into the large steamy bath with You laying on his chest. You traced your fingers under the water against his lower abdomen vines tattoos. He chuckles " I adore you Y/N" he says "what?" You say as Harry grabs a small remote. He pushes on of the buttons at the small stereo speaker you had in the bathroom. A soft pop beat comes out a song you've never heard before.

She spared a glance at Chloe already in Beca’s arms, the two of them reassuring each other with softly spoken words and tender touches. She couldn’t see Jesse but she could feel his eyes on them, all of them.

“He can’t be trusted.” Stacie stooped and hefted what was left of a table top and sighed at the damage. It couldn’t be fixed but Aubrey was fairly certain that Stacie was already working out how to use the parts to make something else. The tall brunette turned her head to meet Aubrey’s gaze, her voice hushed so it wouldn’t carry. “I made a mistake Bree, askin’ for them to help. I know that now.”

Aubrey stacked a few chair legs together and sighed. She took a moment to pull the cigar from her lips and nodded. “Yeap.” It was less than comforting she knew but this was not the time for comfort. This was the time for planning and watching. “But we’re in it now so we’re just gonna have to ride this out to the end, love.”

Stacie nodded her head and dragged the relatively whole pieces to the side wall for repair later. She bent again to pick up the pile that Aubrey had gathered and sighed. Arms full of splintered wood bits she jerked her head at Beca and Chloe without looking over at them. “Think either one of them is gonna forgive me any time soon?”

“Nope.” Stacie’s lips turned down in a frown and Aubrey reached out to tug her ear in an affectionately playful gesture. Her fingers lingering as they traced along Stacie’s jaw. The other woman tipped her head, filling Aubrey’s hand with her cheek. “But they’ll put it aside for now. By the time we’re down South none of us will care to remember this or him ever again. Things will be alright. You’ll see.”

Her mate’s smile was wide and she brought their foreheads together in a soft bump. “I love you Aubrey Posen. With all of my heart, darlin’.”

She knew that of course but it was always nice to hear. I love you had never been a phrase used in her father’s home. I love you was for the weak of heart, the weak of spirit, and those that were too soft for the Lord’s good work. Her father used to say ‘I love you is the balm mothers use to soothe scared children’, it was not meant for any other purpose. Certainly he never showed her any ounce of love in her whole damned life. Aubrey wasn’t even sure he knew how to love, or be loved. She was however sure that he would condemn them both to the fiery pits of Hell for even uttering the words to each other. Truth was she was damn starved for those words that tripped so easily from Stacie’s lips, and she knew she’d never tire of hearing them. She’d do anything to she had to, defy God if she must, just to hear Stacie say it all one more time.

“Are you two done making moon eyes at each other or what?” They didn’t break eye contact at Emmy’s familiar teasing tone.

Stacie gave her forehead another tiny bump and pulled back with an exaggerated sigh of mock annoyance. “Do you mind? We’re having a moment, Em.”

“I don’t mind.” Aubrey chuckled when Emily pulled out a chair that had survived the fight and sat down patiently to wait. Her lips curled in a genuinely happy smile and she rested her chin in her hand. “I can wait.”

Aubrey cleared her throat to keep the chuckle from escaping and turning into a full blown laugh and put her cigar back between her lips. “I’m gonna check on Chloe and Beca. You got this?” At Stacie’s nod she turned and brushed past Emily, tugging a braided pigtail as she passed. Emily leaned to the side and shoulder bumped her hip with a smile. This was her family now, a place where I love you was more than just a platitude like I’m sorry, and nothing to be ashamed of sharing. And she’d be damned if she let Jesse, or her brother, or anyone else take it from her.

She took the few short steps over to Beca and Chloe and eyed her best friend critically. “Anything broke?”

Chloe shook her head and gave her a grin. “Nah. I gave better’n I got. Got me a few loose teeth is all.” She winced when her grin tugged painfully at her split lip and Aubrey nudged Beca out of the way to get a better look at it. “It’s not bad Bree. Caleb and Conner have given me worse rough housin’ in the barn. I’ve been kicked harder by Old Sally harder than he could punch. This is just a scratch.” Aubrey laughed a bit knowing exactly how hard Old Sally, the Beale family mule, could kick.

“Just a scratch she says. I oughta go over there and gut him for putting his hands on you.” Beca nudged Aubrey back out of the way so she could hover protectively over Chloe. It didn’t bother Aubrey, not in the least. She’d have done the same if it had been Stacie, so she stepped back and leaned against the bar, her shoulder brushing Chloe’s. “I’ll kill him for this you know.”

Aubrey believed with every drop of her being that Beca would do just that with little to no regard for their current situation. It was worrisome, enough for her to reach out and grip Beca by the wrist so that the smaller woman would actually look at her. “I do not rest one bit of blame on you for wanting bury him. But now is not the time.”

Beca pulled out of Aubrey’s grip and let out a frustrated breath. “I know that. Okay? I know.” She crossed her arms over her chest defiantly and scuffed the ground with a toe. “I never wanted to see him again. Now he’s here and…I dunno if I can do it anymore. I don’t want to do it anymore.” The smaller woman raised her furious gaze to Aubrey dead in the eye daring her to try and make Beca accept this situation.

She gave a nod and a sigh. “I know Becs. I’m sorry it’s gotta be this way and I’m sorry this is hurting you, if I thought it would make everything better I’d shoot him myself.” It wasn’t a lie, Jesse was a coward sure but he was worse than that. His rage at Beca’s rejection said enough, it was a spoiled child’s reaction, not the reaction of a real man or even just a decent human being. That changed things for Aubrey, it gave her all the incentive she needed to put him in the ground without hesitation. Especially if she felt their safety might be compromised, and it very well might. She just wasn’t prepared to do it quite yet.

Chloe slid her arms around Beca from behind and hooked her chin on her love’s shoulder. “Bree is right. I hate him as much as you do but this ain’t the time.” Aubrey wasn’t fooled one lick by Chloe’s conciliatory tone. She’d known her friend for too long to be just believe it was over for her without a fight but she shrugged it off because that was a weight to bear for another day.

“Right now we got work to do. Benji says The Sisters and La Muda are ready to move.” She gave a nod in the direction of the rest of their crew having a drink just off to the side. “I figure if we head out now we’ll still have time for a quick kip before we gotta get to work. We’ll worry about Jesse when we get back.”

Beca took a deep settling breath and nodded. “You’re right, both of you. Let’s just get this done and go our separate ways as soon as possible. Next time Cat’s double barrel won’t stop what he’s got comin’.” The brunette gave a low whistle to get their team’s attention and jerked her head at the door. “Let’s ride, we got a lot of ground to cover.”

Aubrey watched them all head out after Beca except Stacie who was still talking to Emily. She gave a slight smile at the playful shoves between the two as she joined them. “Time to go, Conrad.”

“Alright, you mind what I said Em. Stay away from those Swanson Boys and you keep quiet about your special friend. That’s our little secret, yeah?” At Emily’s nod, Stacie stood and gave the girl a brief hug. She waited a few moments after Emily had trotted away to focus on Aubrey. “How mad is she?”

Aubrey took the time to stub out her cigar and pocket what was left while Stacie grabbed their gear from where she’d dropped it at the start of the fight before answering. “Plenty mad but mostly at Jesse. But one or both of them is gonna do something foolish that’s gonna get us caught or killed. They’re not thinking straight because they’re too angry.”

Stacie nodded and slung a saddle bag over one shoulder as she handed the other to Aubrey. “Guess that means it’s up to us to finish it quick and clean then.” It wasn’t that they wanted to take the satisfaction of handling Jesse away from Chloe and Beca, they just wanted to take away the temptation of it before one of them broke at the wrong damned time.

She hefted her bag and started for the stable with Stacie at her side. Aubrey reached out a hand and laced their fingers, a gesture she usually didn’t do quite so casually. Of course she wasn’t quite so casual about murder either. It made her think hard on what they’d said about Avery being a problem. She knew he would be and already was but she didn’t know if she would be able to plan his death as neatly as she was planning Jesse’s. Though if he even hinted at a direct threat to Stacie she’d change her mind in an instant.

Stacie tugged her hand, slowing them to a stop before they reached the stable. Aubrey turned to face her and couldn’t help the smile that crept across her face at the way Stacie looked down at her. Her eyes were deep with concern as she tugged Bree closer. “You sure you’re good with this Bree? We can find another way besides the bullet if you’re not. We don’t really need him dead, just out of the way.” Stacie always did seem to know just the right words to ease her nagging worry, and Aubrey loved her all the more for it. Her father was wrong, love wasn’t for the weak, it was for those strong enough to brave it.

She smile deepened and she raised up on her toes to kiss Stacie with a soft brush of her lips. “We’ll do what needs to be done because we have to. I’m square with that as long as I’m with you.” The smile she got was enough confirmation that they were okay and Aubrey led them forward. She knew one day she’d be judged by God on all her misdeeds but she had utter faith he’d see the good intention in every single one of them. And if He didn’t she wouldn’t be alone. Not ever again.

 Uhhhh @redgoth here is this thing that I wrote and then you liked it so I wrote more of it for you. I hope that you like this just as much. It’s too large and I spent too much time on it.

  “He likes you.”   It’s the middle of the day and they should be at school. Cartman doesn’t even look up from the doodle that he’s scratching out on the sidewalk with a stolen chalk stick. “Who likes what?”   “Kenny,” answers Stan, sitting down across from Cartman. He made it all the way through changing into his jersey before deciding that stomaching football practice, and gym class in general, wasn’t something he could manage today.   Cartman doesn’t blame him.   Gym wasn’t fun during elementary school, but it’s even worse now, in middle school.   Thinking about it makes Cartman’s skin crawl. Thinking about Kenny makes his stomach twist up.   Cartman pushes down harder with the chalk. “No, Stan. That’s stupid. Kenny likes Craig.”   Stan doesn’t have any chalk. He uses his palm to smear the thick white lines on the sidewalk. “No way. He thinks Craig’s cute, but he likes you.”   “That’s the same thing.”   “Nuh-uh. Besides, Kenny thinks you’re cute, too. So that means he double-likes you.”   “God, you’re being so stupid right now.” Cartman scribbles over top of the cat that he’d been trying to draw. “I literally saw Kenny kiss Craig yesterday. They’re holding hands and all kinds of stuff.”   Stan snatches the piece of chalk out of Cartman’s hand. “He wants to hold hands with you. And, uh, you’re going to break this if you aren’t more careful. I’m pretty sure that Miss Effie knows we’re the ones who keep taking her chalk. We need to try bringing it back more often.”   “Whatever. She should watch her chalk more if she doesn’t want us to take it.” Cartman rolls his eyes, but he’s actually pretty glad to not have to talk about Kenny anymore.   He doesn’t want to say that he kind of wants to hold Kenny’s hand, too.

  It’s seven months later and Kenny’s interests have changed. He spends most of his free-time with Clyde; they’ve eaten lunch together every day this week, and Cartman kind of hates not being able to share his lunch.     Stan leans across the lunch room table. “Hey, Cartman. What’s wrong?”   “Nothing’s wrong, Stan.” Cartman jams his fork into the herb crusted chicken breast that he brought from home.   “No. Something’s wrong.” Stan is picking at the partially frozen peas he got from the lunch-lady. “You’ve got that look happening. See? Right there! You always scrunch up your nose when you’re upset.”   Cartman makes a conscience effort to relax his face. “Nothing’s wrong. Do you want my cauliflower, or what?”   Stan thinks over the offer for a moment. In the end, he nods. “Yeah, dude. I’ll take your cauliflower.”

  Days become weeks become months and conversations repeat themselves, an endless loop that Cartman hates to fall into but can’t seem to crawl out of.   It’s Stan’s fault, mostly.   After all, Stan is the one that keeps bringing it up.   “He likes you,” quips Stan, even though Cartman found Kenny making out with Bebe two days ago, and wrapped around Jimmy a few days before that.   It’s the last year of middle school. The last week, even. Cartman doesn’t understand where the time went. He’s got a fading black eye, a split lip. The bell rings, but he’s just as content to sit in the boy’s restroom as Stan is.   “Cartman?” Stan turns on one faucet, then the next. He walks down the whole line of sinks turning on the water just because. “I, uh, just wanted to say that I’m right.” Stan turns, starts turning the faucets back off as he heads for the paper towel holder that Cartman’s hitting under. “You’re the only one that he actually smiles at, man. Kenny likes flirting and, uh, doing stuff but, you know, everyone can tell that he wants to date you.”   Cartman picks at a scab on the back of one hand. He won’t look Stan in the eye – can’t look Stan in the eye – too busy thinking about a gap toothed smile, bright blue eyes, barely visible freckles that Cartman’s always kind of wanted to count. “You think?”   Stan pauses two sinks away. He looks surprised not to have gotten another adamant protest.   Cartman’s kind of surprised that he didn’t give one.   “Yeah,” says Stan, after a moment. He turns off the second to last sink. “Yeah, Cartman. You, uh, you should say something to him. Kenny really likes you.”   The edge of the scab slips under Cartman’s nail. He narrows his eyes, peeling it back, up, and off. “I don’t know. I might. It just, ugh, fuck, Stan, doesn’t it seem stupid to you?”   “Uh, no? What’s – what’s supposed to seem stupid?”  “That Kenny would want to date me.”   “I think Kenny’s always kind of wanted to date you.” Stan sticks his hands under the spray of sulfur scented water before turning off the last sink. He wipes his hands dry on his bleach stained jeans. “I mean, you’ve been his best friend since basically forever and, uh, you know, you’re who he flirted with first.”   Cartman shrugs. “So?”   Stan shrugs, too. Then he sits down next to Cartman. Their fingers brush. “Kenny likes messing around, but he likes you.”   “What, are you an expert on romance all of a sudden?”   “Maybe not romance, but I’m kind of an expert on you guys.”   “I don’t think you’re an expert on anything,” grumbles Cartman. Still, he can’t help but think, but wonder, what if, what if, what if, what if Stan’s wrong?

  The bell rings for the last time before summer break and Cartman feels anything but free. He’s been dragging his feet all day, reluctant to go outside and meet up with Kenny because he knows how this is going to end but he wants Stan to stop bothering him about it.   Kenny is waiting for Cartman on the corner. He’s wearing a bright purple jacket. It looks familiar, but Cartman’s not sure where he saw it last. “Hey, Cartman! There you are! Man, I thought that you might’ve ditched me or something!”   “Yeah, Kenny. I totally went out of my way to invite you over to my house for movies, only to go home without you. Christ. I’m not twelve.” Cartman drapes an arm over Kenny’s shoulders. He grabs a fistful of the baggy sweater. “It looks like this is trying to eat you. Where’s your parka?”   Kenny gives an awkward shrug, shoulders weighed down by Cartman’s arm. “I spilled milk all over it on the way outta lunch. Clyde’s letting me borrow this. It’s pretty sweet, right?”   Cartman steers them around the corner, towards 8th street. “Uh, yeah. I guess that was pretty cool of him.”   Kenny grins. The tip of his tongue presses against the gap between his front teeth. “He’s a really sweet boyfriend.”   “Boyfriend?” Cartman comes to a sudden stop, arm falling off of Kenny’s shoulders.   It takes a moment for the other boy to stop. Kenny turns around, hands shoved in his pockets, brows raised. “You okay?”   “Since when are you and Crybaby Clyde dating?”   “Uh, since this morning? What, got a problem with it?”   Yes, thinks Cartman. Yes, I do, I really fucking do because I wanna date you and I wanna hold your hand and I want you to think that I’m cute and sweet and a good boyfriend and Stan said that you thought all of those things and he’s such a dumbass I’m such a dumbass this was such a dumb idea.   “Cartman?” The smile drops off Kenny’s face. “You okay?”   Cartman opens his mouth, fully planning on telling Kenny everything.   But the words won’t come.   They’re lodged in his throat, a knot so hard it’s impossible to breath.   So he nods, instead, and he takes a few one step – two steps – big steps until he’s passed Kenny and heading down the right track again. “I’m fine,” croaks Cartman. “I just can’t believe you’ve dropped your standards so low.”     It’s only a half-lie, and Cartman is really good at telling those.   He’s really good at a lot of things – like wrapping his arms back around Kenny’s shoulders and listening to him talk about his newest boyfriend.

There was only one reason Maron wouldn’t be clawing the door to shreds for attention. A pair of black boots rested in the entryway, confirming your suspicions. You dumped the groceries in the kitchen and ambled down the hall. The hiss of running water reached your ears. Standing guard duty outside the bathroom door was the cat. He meowed in greeting, but didn’t abandon his post. Good, loyal beast. Knocking, you poked your head around the bathroom door.

A tall, dark-haired figure stood, blurred, behind the steamed-up glass of the shower.

‘You’re home early,’ you called.

‘Internships,’ came the muffled reply.

‘They go off okay?’ you asked, gathering up the black clothes left crumpled on the bathroom floor. Shouta would pick up after himself, but you needed to wash some of your own clothes anyway, and he was probably exhausted. You made his life easier where you could.

‘Yeah.’

He was being particularly monosyllabic today, which meant there was something on his mind. You bundled up his clothes, turned for the door, then hesitated.

‘I’m making chicken katsu curry. Do you want some coffee, babe?’

‘Mm. Thanks.’

Hmph. You stuck your head around the shower wall to smirk at your naked boyfriend and got a dark, raised eyebrow in return.

‘Ten thousand yen a peep,’ he drawled, rubbing at the shampoo lather in his black hair. Suds ran down his toned arms, sluiced down his muscled chest by the shower spray.

You looked him up and down slow and lascivious, letting your eyes linger, heated, on his chest and thighs. Head tilted to one side, you chewed your bottom lip in thought. ‘I’d pay more.’

‘Using it as a shield,’ you corrected. ‘From a jerk with a terrible aim.’

His eyes narrowed. ‘I wasn’t aiming to hit you. It was a warning.’

‘Mm-hm, a convenient excuse.’

He reached over the partition, dripping water onto your head. He seemed appeased by your gasp of outrage. ‘Go make your curry, or join me. Stop distracting me with pointless banter.’

Join him? It was a rare opportunity. Shouta usually showered in a rush or like a dead-eyed zombie, shuffling to get ready for the day. Or when he got home long after you’d gone to bed. You were pulling your shirt up over your head before the thought even fully registered. You needed to do laundry anyway. Your pants joined the pile of black cloth on the tiled floor. You were sliding your underwear down your thighs when you made the mistake of glancing up.

Through the little window he’d wiped, a pair of hooded dark eyes watched you, gleaming.

You cocked an eyebrow, putting your hands on your hips. ‘One hundred thousand yen for a strip show.’

He scoffed, turning his back. ‘Too expensive.’

Your jaw dropped in mock outrage. How rude. You dropped the last scrap of clothing on the pile and climbed over the lip of the bathtub into the shower. He still had his back to you, rinsing the shampoo from his hair. His skin was flushed from the heat, scars standing out pale. You reached out, walking your fingers up his spine.

He glanced back over his shoulder; his mouth curved at one side into a crooked smirk that made your stomach lurch. Shouta turned to you, slung an arm around your waist, and pulled you in. You were pressed up against slick muscle, staring up into his lazy, impassive gaze. Heat curled low in your abdomen.

'Finish it for me?'

The heat evaporated and you rolled your eyes. 'Lazy ass.'

You reached up, pulling his head down and sinking your fingers into his hair to rinse the rest of the shampoo from the thick waves. You wouldn't be surprised if he'd invited you into the shower just for that. Stubble prickled the side of your neck, followed by the brush of lips. A kiss. Hands stroked up your naked sides. With his mouth on your throat, he could tell exactly when your pulse jumped. You felt his smirk against your skin, and gave his hair a playful tug.

'Don't start teasing me if you're just going to crash as soon as we get out,' you warned him.

You had to laugh, sweeping his wet hair back out of his face. 'Because you're predictable. Pass me the shampoo.'
