The night she kills Raymond, Eve washes her body like a rape victim would.

With trembling fingers and uncharacteristic franticness, she scrubs away red and guilt stuck along the smooth expanse of skin grown pink - from the roughness of the sponge or the diluted blood, she isn’t sure -  and thinks of his, surely cooled by now, nothing but blueish flesh to be consumed eventually, when sticky maggots, shiny like oyster pearls but not as beautiful, feast on necrotic swell.

She imagines eyes that would resemble overripe plums in a matter of weeks as she closes hers for a moment, times her breathing with the water that laps at the side of her bath, and opens them again. Something unnerving simmering below her breastbone, she looks at the stubborn smudges of dried blood dyeing her cuticles burgundy until her vision slides out of focus, the image before her flowing seamlessly from hands into a lazy waltz of colors merging together with no discernible features.

It’s very possible that she is crying but it could be steamy water beating against her that’s blurring her vision. There’s the suggestion of a laugh bubbling on the tip of her tongue.

Villanelle finds her with her forehead resting on drawn up knees, arms tightly wrapped around them.

“Eve,” she says from the doorway, careful not to startle her. “I knocked twice but you did not answer.”

When she looks up at her, both eyebrows raised like she doesn’t understand, the corner lamp and lavender moonlight spilling through the windows hits pale skin, and it’s hard for Villanelle to associate this Eve to the one whose eyes had adopted an animalistic glint not two hours ago. This is more like the tenderly horrified version of Eve, the one that said Hold on, it’s okay, I got you after she had stuck a knife in her in Paris.

“He would’ve killed you,” Eve is saying quietly, like she no idea why she’s saying it at all.

He wouldn’t have, but she understands the importance of lies when the truth is keen on destruction, so she lets her believe that all the same.

“Yes. He would have.”

Fingertips traveling to the sensitive spots on her neck Raymond’s hands had branded, her mind works through the events of the previous hours, the memory of it all preserved in a box inside her head, a treasured jewel.

She recalls the feel of her hyoid bone being forcefully pushed down under the V of his rear naked choke, adrenaline dense as quicksand travelling in twisted forms through her bloodstream to fight back the fading of her vision, the manic laugh that had been simmering inside her chest for too long eventually making it’s way up her throat because she enjoys it more when her victims think they have the upper hand until the very last moment, and then-- just as she was starting to lose her patience, fingers tightly wrapped around the knife at her waist, ready-- the wet gurgling sound of an axe going through flesh like butter.

When his body collapsed and she turned around, being greeted with wild hair and equally wild eyes had just been icing on the cake. Thrill, there was no other word for it, was lurking behind brown orbs. She could read intention in them from every single angle, even through the haze, so perfect a negative of what should’ve been there instead.

Trust Eve to always exceed her expectations.

“You’ve been in here for nearly an hour.” She hears Villanelle say. “Are you okay? May I come in?”

She nods to one of her questions. “Yeah.”

She feels only a little foolish for thinking she would walk in and kneel to be at eye-level. Instead, she sees bare feet sliding into the room, hears the swish of silk robe caressing skin to make its way to the floor. Against white tiles, the fabric forms a pool the color of sangria sunsets, of Dom Perignon Oenotheque Rosé, of life spilled onto a rug.

She clears her throat, tries her best not to look up.

Her gaze flies up to Villanelle’s face all the same. There are no traces of blood anymore. Right after it was over, she had averted her eyes from Villanelles as though the exhilaration would rub off on her but she did wipe some of it herself. Her fingertips had danced across her cheeks, something protective in her not bearing the sight of gore splattered out like freckles on her face.

She takes in the honey-colored eyes, the carefully arranged emotions filling up such depths. She lets herself revel in everything she finds staring back. Longing, softness, and the ever-present hunger that surely must be a reflection of her own hidden desires.

It’s the proud gleam she eventually recognizes there that eventually makes her look away.

Some emotion she didn’t care to name stirring in his chest, she watches her nakedness like you watch a chemical reaction. Cautious, wary. Fascinated. She commits to memory the contradiction that is Villanelle— the softness of the rosy nipples and supple breasts, of the full hips and thighs; and then the tightness of lean muscles underneath creamy skin, the strength of long fingers clenching at her sides, waiting, letting herself be seen.

She reminds herself to breathe as her eyes fall and linger on the scar of her creation, a thing she made. It’s smaller, now, but still, it protrudes proudly pink on ivory canvas. A flashback threatens to destroy her composure, her breathing shaking like the delicate stutter of wounded butterfly wings. She’s been here before. Under different circumstances, yes, but still. There’s something to be said about finding oneself in the same situation twice, but she blinks that thought away when Villanelle moves to sit behind her.  

“The water is cold,” she remarks like a child would, water splashing out onto the floor as it welcomes the new weight.

Eve only notices it then, the temperature contrasting against Villanelle’s naked body, solid around hers.

She smiles a weak smile out of reflex. “Uh, yeah. Sorry.”

“Let me, Eve,” Villanelle offers evenly.

It pricks at her, the way Villanelle, who is not in the least afraid of anything, uses that careful tone of voice with her, the one whispered to alert your friend about a bear in the clear. She thinks of role reversals but doesn’t dwell on this because that would make her the threat, and because Villanelle is moving to twist the drain stopper open and turn the spray on once again. She finds herself relaxing under the new soothing warmth, lets her body melt deeper into her.

When Villanelle tentatively says, “You didn’t wash your hair yet,” she guesses the intention behind her words, precariously hidden behind strong phonemes of someone who speaks a foreign language.

This time, she thinks of belonging and vulnerability and bruised hearts, and the guilt seared inside her turns into the good kind of pull, something like longing sitting in her stomach like lead. If this is what they are now, so be it.

Relief deeper than consolation curling the muscles around her mouth into a genuine smile, she says,

“Would you do it for me?”

Time seems to be slowed tonight, liquescent. Boundless fascination igniting unfamiliar fluttering in her breast, pulsing through the weak confines of her system, Villanelle feels most alive in the small moments Eve offers herself to her.

Pouring a dollop of expensive shampoo into her palm, she conceals the metallic smell of blood and fear with floral notes and musky herbs purchased in Tuscany, working the cream from her scalp to the ends, her intention to soften Eve’s thoughts, her heart squeezing when she feels more than hears Eve exhaling a noise of pleasure.

She imagines half-lidded eyes and slightly parted lips as she traces the thick mass of hair cascading through her fingers. Almost dizzy, she runs her hands over impossibly onyx like it’s a sacred thing, enraptured by the ghastly shimmer that every droplet reflects, bright white and indigo hues where light falls.

Amorphous like the water flowing between them, her curls are lost because of the weight, but they are soft all the same on fingers weaving through strands, slippery silks tickling nerve endings, hair runny like good ink. Villanelle drinks in its heaviness-- buoyant, generous, luscious. Obscene.She feels the tingling previously narrowed down to pinpricks at her fingertips expand, propelling to meet the newfound buzzing rising in her lower belly right at the middle of her chest, where sinews taut like violin strings seem to snap, spreading stark explosions of amber everywhere.

Before she has the chance to voice her admiration,

“I have killed someone.” Eve breathes it out like a revelation, a little hysterical.

Villanelle inhales sharply, hands frozen in place. She waits.

“Don’t stop now, Oksana,” Eve admonishes softly, and encourages her to resume her movements by nuzzling against her palms the way cats do.

Outside the windows, the buzz and hiss of streetlamps remind Eve of her own inconsistency reverberating inside her core, flaring, barely kept at bay. Inside, Villanelle unhooks the shower head to rinse her clean. With practiced skill, fingers surprisingly delicate for someone as strong as her, she gathers her hair and lets it fall, once, twice, a delicious number of times.

Her knuckles graze the base of her neck in whirls and lines and streaks, a brush connecting twinkling dots scattered in the sky to form constellations. Cygnus, Ophiuchus, Orion cross her mind.

Always in synchrony with each other, they both sigh.

If she were anyone else, or if Villanelle were, she would’ve been more wary. Because she is not, and Villanelle isn’t, so she closes her eyes and lowers her guard and herself into sultry warmth.

Underwater, she listens carefully to the sound of blood thrumming in her ears and the vicious beat of her living heart. Darkness. For a while, that’s all there is. Then, the same deep quiet that soothes helps filter out with deafening clarity Villanelle’s Why did you do that, Eve? inside her mind, an echo from some other time when she thought she would become a corpse in her kitchen. Only this time, the crime scene hadn’t been her kitchen and the corpse hadn’t been hers.

She breaks the surface gasping for air just as the sob trapped inside her throat makes its way out.

She turns Eve around easily, drawing her closer and burying her head in her chest. She traces endless circles on her back, tenderly where skin was rubbed raw, trying to offer Eve any measure of comfort. She imagines what she must be feeling right now and waits, unsure of what to make of Eve’s reactions.

Villanelle is still so stunned by her very existence, by the very presence of this woman in her life. Eve, who had left everything she knew in the past to follow her into an uncertain future. Eve, who is a force of nature, untamed and undeterred. Eve, whose hot breath tickles where she tries to muffle her sobs.

To a certain extent, she had experienced enjoyment in the situation, not sure she’s ever felt so flattered. The realization of what Eve has done for her had blossomed inside her chest like flowers turning its heads to the sun. She’s used to taking lives, but she’s not used to people taking them in order to save hers. It had been a gift, and that is much more familiar.

She knows a thing or two about returning favors, and maybe because she doesn’t care about faceless men and consequences and guilt this is not a selfless act, but deep down, she knows she does what she does out of love for her, and that she means every promise she makes.

And so she grabs her hand, if only so that an axe wasn’t the last thing she’s held, and says in hushed words, a quiet breath in the space between them,

“No one has to know it was you who did it.”

Eve tenses. She thinks, Would you? For me? and Shut up, shut up, shut up in the same millisecond.

She can see that going one of two ways: Villanelle takes the fall for her, if it comes to that, because one more victim wouldn’t make a difference to anyone. Except her. She’s free. Probably. She’s free, without Villanelle. Her breath hitches. Or, Villanelle doesn’t:  She takes responsibility for what she’s done and accepts her fate, whatever that might be. Her breath hitches.

An unreasonable line of thought sprouts in her mind. If we go down, we down together. She almost lets out a laugh, loud and importunate, at the absurdity of that part of her that longs for the idealized end. Almost.

She will make sure it doesn’t go any of those ways at all. She has no intention of negotiating. You are not doing that, Villanelle.

She must have said that last part out loud, because Villanelle lifts her chin to meet her eyes.

“I don’t care about adding one more name to my list,” she says, matter-of-factly. Then she makes a face, adds: “I’m only worried about people thinking I’m sloppy.”

It wasn’t meant to be a joke. Her eyebrows are raised, forehead slightly scrunched up, eyes open and honest. It’s that innate innocence of hers that makes her let out the laugh she was holding— something dry, like it was forced out her lungs. She fights the impulse to press her lips to hers, to kiss her just for the sake of making her stop talking for the rest of the night.

If she is honest, the only reason she doesn’t is because if they ever kiss, she doesn’t want it to be like this. If she is completely honest, she prefers not being on the brink of a nervous breakdown when they do.

Firmly, because she is so tired: “You are not doing that.”

As consolation, the back of her fingers brushes against her high cheeks with the same tenderness they had caressed her that night in her kitchen, a barely-there touch.

Time stifled into stillness, they make this moment theirs. In the confines of these seconds, they breathe in and out steadily, the crucible of their intimacy finding a rhythm when their hearts beat the same quiet symphony.

Villanelle is looking at her the way she has looked at her from the first moment they met. The way no one else has— Her, in her line of vision, and then everything else.

Eve thinks that if this were happening in an alternate universe, she would be whispering three words at her like a confession.

Best not to think of what could have been, she blinks then to escape the intensity of Villanelles eyes, probably close to guessing her thoughts.

“Let’s get out of here,” she says, slightly breathless, not sure she means the tub or something else.

Villanelle decides for her. Standing up, she gently extends a hand.

She holds it, filled with a calm contentment so otherworldly that she feels both light-headed and heavy at the same time, as if she were so relaxed her seemingly weightless body could float and drift away towards night sky if it weren’t for the honey thick feel of drowsiness running through her veins and Villanelle’s hand sliding against hers, twining their fingers together, anchoring her.

Ron was late. He knew it, Hermione knew it, even Crookshanks knew it. It wasn't completely unheard of for him to arrive home hours later than anticipated from a mission, but it still never failed to send Hermione into a worried frenzy, causing her to pace the floor, deep-clean the bathroom without magic, sit with Crookshanks in her lap and reread old, familiar books. And now, finally, after six extra hours on the job, he trudged slowly into their rented flat as though each step caused him deep physical pain.

Which they did. His muscles ached in a way he had never quite felt before, he hadn't slept in over a day, his skin was caked with dirt and his one saving grace was that he had at least eaten recently. He was just unlacing his boots when Hermione jumped up from the sofa, causing the cat to meow in annoyance and scurry down the hall to the bedroom.

“Finally you're home!” she exclaimed, flinging her arms around his neck in greeting. “I was really starting to worry.”

He couldn't help it; the force of her contact made him whimper slightly in pain. “Sorry,” he muttered, allowing his hands to fall onto her waist.

“Are you okay? What happened?”

“M’fine,” he replied. “It was just… cold. And rainy. And I had to sit in a tree for the entire day - I reckon I just need a shower.”

Ron laid a light kiss on her forehead and made his way down the hall to the bathroom. Even disrobing felt like a gargantuan effort, his clothing clinging to him despite his best attempts to peel it away. He found himself twisting awkwardly to try to yank off his vest when one sharp rotation of his waist had him howling in pain.

Hermione was at the door in an instant. “Ron? What's wrong?”

“I'm fine, love,” he called back.

The door swung open - clearly he hadn’t sounded convincing - and there she stood.

“You didn’t sound fine just now.”

“It’s nothing, really - I just might’ve hurt my ribs, is all-“

“Then you need to go to St. Mungo's,” she said, stepping into the bathroom. The running shower was already filling the small room with steam.

“Maybe later,” he protested. “I'll be fine, I just need a shower.”

“Let me help you,” said Hermione, taking the hem of his vest and pulling the sodden, muddy garment over his head. He expected her to leave then, but instead she found the buckle of his belt and unhooked it, then unzipped his trousers and let them fall. It was, of course, hardly the first time she had undressed him, but this somehow felt like one of the most intimate things they had ever done.

“Thanks,” he said when she had stripped him bare. “I'll be out in a minute, okay?” He dipped his head, intending to kiss her in gratitude, but even that subtle motion made him wince.

But rather than retreat, she removed her own t-shirt and pushed her shorts down to the floor to join his clothes. Of course, he thought with a pang of regret. Of course she would want shower sex when he was too exhausted and feeble to move.

“Don't take this the wrong way,” he began tentatively as she took off her knickers, “but I'm not sure I have the energy right now - maybe after I have a nap-”

“I'm just going to help you wash up,” she explained, dropping her bra onto the pile of clothing. “If that's all right.”

“Oh. Yeah, course it is.” Even in this state, Ron never minded a chance to see Hermione naked - and truthfully, he wasn’t sure how much he would be able to do on his own.

The hot water pounded onto his strained, weary shoulders and soaked his dirty hair as he stepped under the spray. Hermione, all business, picked up her bottle of body wash and a flannel and squirted a liberal amount of the former onto the latter.

“Tell me if something hurts, okay?” Hermione requested.

She worked the soap into a thick lather and gently ran the flannel over his chest. Ron felt a great swell of affection for her as she spread the bubbles down his torso and up over his shoulders, her touch light and careful. He hadn't known how badly he needed her until she had taken it upon herself to come to his aid.

“I love you,” he mumbled as she ran the flannel over his arm, causing soapy water tinged with dirt to swirl down the drain. His mouth angled toward hers, and she obliged him in a quick kiss before running her fingers up his back. Before he could stop himself, he hissed, his face screwing up in pain.

“Turn around,” she commanded, and he did as told. “Oh, Ron, you've got a big cut! Maybe I should get the dittany-”

“Later,” he said. “The hot water’s helping. And so are you.”

The bubbles trailed down over his legs as she exhausted the last of the soap on the flannel and turned to his shampoo. After squirting way too much into her palm - she must have been doling out the appropriate amount for her own wild mane - she stood on tiptoe to rub it into his hair. He tried to crouch to help her, but the arch of his back made his ribs protest angrily, and he bit back a grimace.

“What really happened?” Hermione asked softly, raking her fingers gently through his sudsy hair. “I know this isn't just from sitting in a tree.”

“It's not,” he admitted, finally kneeling down so she wouldn't injure herself trying to reach the top of his head. Face to face with her navel, he placed a kiss on her stomach. Under different circumstances, he'd probably keep kissing south…

“So what happened, then?”

“Just a duel,” he told her truthfully. “It was nothing to worry about, but I did also sit in a tree for a really long time.”

The light scratch of her nails massaging his scalp was brilliant, allowing stress to melt away from him in such a way that he was already planning to return this favor to her once he felt up to it.

“You're getting too old for this,” she remarked.

“I'm twenty,” Ron smiled as he stood up and rinsed away the shampoo.

“You know what I mean.” Hermione stood on her toes again, this time wrapping her arms carefully around his neck. On instinct, Ron curled his own arms around her waist and held her to him, relishing in the closeness. “Is this still worth it?” she asked in a whisper as the water splashed down upon them.

The last vestiges of the shampoo slid down Ron's skin as he contemplated this. It was a thought he’d had a thousand times before, during early mornings filling out paperwork or late nights staking out a target. His work as an Auror was important - there was no doubt about that - but the young woman standing before him, with drops of water clinging to her eyelashes, mattered more to him than anything else. And though she’d always been supportive of his career as an Auror, he saw it in her eyes every time he came home late or had a mysterious injury: this terrified her. Every time he was gone, they both thought of the war and what they could have missed out on if something had gone wrong, and he hated that he made her relive some of the worst days of their lives.

“You know what?” he said, loosening his grip just enough to look her in the eye. “No. It’s not.”

“It’s not?”

”Not anymore,” he said thoughtfully. “Right after the war, yeah, I wanted to do it. I needed to do it. But things have changed so much, and… and sometimes I think I shouldn’t’ve turned down George's offer.”

“You're really serious,” she said, dropping down to stand squarely on her feet again. “I didn't know you felt this way.”

“I just reckoned it was mental to turn down a Ministry career to work in a joke shop, but… I don't think it makes sense to stay in a job I don't enjoy, either, when I could have one that I do.”

“I don't care what your job is,” Hermione said candidly. “I love you, I just need you to be safe.”

“Yeah,” he nodded, feeling a wild sense of clarity despite the ache and fatigue in his bones. “And not that this isn't nice, but I usually have different plans for you when we’re in here together.”

“Right,” she smiled, tilting her face up to catch his lips with hers. “We've got to get out of here, then, because it's giving me ideas.”

The water swirling at their feet ran clear, so they turned off the shower and fetched thick, fluffy towels from the hook on the door.

“Will you take a nap with me?” Ron requested as they dried off, Hermione using her wand to sap the excess water from her hair. “Or at least, lay with me until I fall asleep?”

“Of course,” she agreed, rising up to kiss him again.

Once sufficiently dry, they walked, completely starkers, down the hall to their room (one of the things Ron had been most excited about when they had gotten their own flat) and slipped into the cool, clean sheets of their bed.

“You aren't going to get ideas in here, are you?” Hermione asked teasingly, resting her head on his shoulder.

“Nah, I'm going to need my energy for tomorrow,” Ron said. “You know, for when I talk George into hiring me.”

Kissing him softly on the lips, Hermione laced their fingers together on his chest and closed her eyes.

Somehow, despite the exhaustion and the twinge in his ribs and the weakness in his muscles, Ron felt better than he had in a long, long time.

One of the biggest struggles in starting a whole new curly hair care routine is figuring out how to maintain it without washing it every other day or so. It takes a lot of patience to get used to your hair feeling oilier than usual and figuring out what methods work best for your hair type. So I’m sharing how I care for my hair during the week in between washes to help y’all get a few ideas how to care for your hair without over-washing.

Sunday: Full Wash Day

I usually do my wash days on the weekend since I have more time to do the full routine and allow it to air dry. I also updated my routine since my first posts!

Before stepping into the shower, I do a pre-poo treatment. What is this silly phrase you may ask? A pre-poo treatment is when you apply oils to your hair before shampooing and/or conditioning to help moisturize and avoid stripping out too much of your natural sebum. This treatment can also be yogurt, honey, bananas, or whatever home remedy works best for your hair type. The treatment I personally grew to love is aloe vera gel.

Doesn’t matter the brand or color, it all works the same. Since starting a curly hair routine, my scalp gets really itchy in between washes, and it doesn’t help that it’s naturally dry to begin with. Aloe vera gel is my savior from scratching at my head too much, because it’s so cool and refreshing. And some vitamin E is always a plus. I’ll massage about a couple handfuls into my scalp and let it sit for a few minutes while I brush my teeth, feed the cats, and set up everything for my mask (hair cap, dryer, etc).

For this wash day, I used the following:

Styling Mist: OGX Hydrate + Defrizz Kukuí Oil Anti-Frizz Hydrating Oil

My hair has a fresh start with soft, defined curls and minimal frizz. The rat’s nest is detangled, and my scalp is clean and not itchy. Sometimes the curls take a while to bounce back, but usually day 2 or 3 hair looks best once you allow enough time for the sebum to set in.

I used to use one of the Maui Moisture masks as a leave-in conditioner, but because of the thick consistency, it’s too easy to accidentally use too much, thus weighing down your hair over time. The Blueberry Bliss leave-in conditioner is much lighter and gets the job done splendidly without build up.

I love the OGX oil sprays as they saved my frizzy hair many times before. It’s the perfect last minute touch to help keep in all the moisture. However, like any hair oil, it’ll weigh your curls down if you overdo it. Just 4-5 sprays combed through is perfect.

  As you can see, I have some more curl definition, but the frizz is quickly setting back in. These days, I’ll just use the leave-in conditioner and oil spray to tame it all. I usually use a small palmful of leave-in conditioner after washing my hair, but for the in-between days, I just use about a nickle-sized amount, give or take. Since I don’t always feel like going into the shower to wet my hair for this process, I made a DIY refreshing spray.

Aloe vera gel is also a great add in for your skin routine (especially if you have eczema flare ups!)

All it has is water, aloe vera gel, and argan oil– I just eyeball the measurements and use my best judgement on if I need more of one ingredient over another and shake it up until it’s all mixed together. I’ll spray it through my hair until it’s lightly damp before working in any product, and it works wonderfully. If my scalp is feeling especially thirsty, I’ll spray directly on and massage the mixture in, so it feels rejuvenated without even trying to gamble with dry shampoo.

Wednesday: Co-Wash Day

Usually at this point, just those three products won’t cut it to manage the increasing tangles. Depending how the rest of the week is, I might start feeling just a tad greasy too. So it’s time to pop back in the shower for a co-wash, which is where you just wash your hair with conditioner.

I pretty much do the same routine as I would a full wash day, but only cut out the shampoo and mask.

God, I just wanna drink it…

For this co-wash, I used the Maui Moisture Curl Quench conditioner. It contains aloe leaf juice, coconut water, coconut oil, papaya extract, and plumeria extract. As expected of this brand, it smells like a tropical paradise tempting to eat right out of the bottle. It’s only about a few degrees less thick than their masks, and it just melts right through the tangles for those days you need a moisturizing pick-me-up. I usually only need one palmful to get the job done. I definitely recommend this brand of conditioner if you’re struggling with tangles.

After that, I’ll finger comb and scrunch in my leave-ins and stylers like normal, and my hair is ready to take on the world again. This is the best my hair looked and felt this whole week once it got that extra moisture boost and delayed the onslaught of disaster. I actually had more curls than my full wash day which was pretty impressive.

After my co-wash day, I’ll repeat the same routine as Monday and Tuesday until it’s time for another full wash. As you can see, my hair gets frizzier no matter how much product I’ll put in, and it’s much less fluffy and curly than it was on Sunday. By Saturday, there’s almost no curls left, and that’s when I notice how oily my hair feels as it almost lies flat on my head.

Come Sunday, I start it all over again!

And that’s my week with my hair routine! It took quite a bit of trial and error to figure out how long I could go without washing my hair and how to best maintain it in between washes. It’s a hell of an adjustment to get used to certain practices and working in new products, and your hair might be mad at you at first for not washing it every other day.

Here’s a few tips to get you started on a new curly hair routine:

Wash your hair less little by little. Start with every other day, then every three days and so on until you can go a week without a full wash. By then you’ll figure out what you’ll need for those in-between days.

If you must use any spray to make your hair feel clean, invest in a refresher spray with natural ingredients (whether you buy a name-brand or make your own at home). Avoid dry shampoos if at all possible since they mainly contain alcohol which can lead to product build up if overused.

Replace anything with sulfates and silicones ASAP. You can’t get moisture in if you’re using products which are either stripping the sebum or blocking anything from penetrating the strands. Your hair will thank you in the long run.

Start with a little product at first and then increase as to your hair’s needs. Everyone’s hair works differently, and certain products won’t make the cut. Sometimes just one styler will be enough; other times you might need two or three to get your hair to calm the fuck down. You’ll figure out quick at what point it builds up.

Summary: After their kid doesn’t know one of their favorite movies, Brooke and Vanessa have a little movie marathon introducing favorite movies to them.

A/N:

This is a Christmas gift for Writ because they’re the absolute best. It also fulfills the prompt ‘List’ for Ficmas here (albeit a few days late), so I wanted to share here as well!  It’s pretty much pure fluff and I hope you all enjoy! I’d appreciate any feedback you have as well.

“Brooke, can you get me a bowl?” Vanessa calls over from the stove, where she’s stirring a pot of rice.

“As you wish.” Brooke snorts after she says it, trading smiles with Vanessa. One of their favorite movies, and the first couples costume they did all those years ago for Nina’s world-famous–or at least city-famous–Halloween party, where there was always full catering, a DJ, and at least one rumored celebrity hidden behind a mask. One person isn’t smiling though, and it’s their kid, pausing table-setting to stare at them.

“‘As you wish?’” Sam repeats in confusion. “What is this, the Middle Ages?”

Brooke’s mouth falls open. “What? No, it’s from a movie.”

“Oh.” Sam shrugs and goes back to setting the table, clearly unimpressed.

Vanessa is nowhere near as calm, her wooden spoon clattering on the counter. “Brooke, our child doesn’t know The Princess Bride!” She leaves the stove to stand by Brooke, shaking her head in outrage.

“We’ve officially failed as parents,” Brooke agrees.

Sam rolls their eyes. “It’s just some old movie, right?”

“‘Some old movie,’” Vanessa mutters under her breath. “‘Some old movie.’ Brooke, we gotta fix this.”

Brooke nods. She and Vanessa have always let Sam be themself, reading and watching stuff freely, as long as it wasn’t too dark or upsetting. But in all that, they must have forgotten to show Sam all the movies they had wanted to, the movies that Brooke and Vanessa love.

When Vanessa got stuck on bed rest towards the end of her pregnancy, she watched movies to pass the time, and Brooke joined her when she could, rubbing Vanessa’s aching back and massaging her shoulders, doing anything she could to make her more comfortable. They talked about all the movies they wanted to watch after their baby was born, the things they wanted to do and memories they wanted to make as a family. They had even made a list of movies, but it got lost somewhere in the chaos of having a new baby. Sam might be nine now, but they can still make those memories, and Brooke claps her hands. “We need a movie marathon!”

Vanessa jumps up and down. “Yeah! This week, we’re gonna watch a bunch of movies! Sammy’s on winter break, it’s perfect! We can do one every night! Peter Pan, and the Peanuts, and Muppets Christmas Carol–”

“Jurassic Park,” Brooke adds, grabbing a notebook and pen. “And Star Wars, and Matilda … my movies are way better than yours, babe.”

“Nuh-uh!” Vanessa yells. “Mine are classics!”

“I guess Sam will be the judge of that, then.” Brooke grins.

“They will be, and you can do dishes for a week when they like mine better,” Vanessa says, raising her eyebrow mischievously.

“What do I get if I win?” Brooke asks. It better be something good, something Vanessa hates as much as Brooke hates doing dishes.

Vanessa thinks. “I’ll do the laundry for a week.”

Vanessa hates folding clothes since she does it all day in her boutique. Brooke doesn’t mind laundry, exactly, but she’ll happily let Vanessa take over and fold the endless amounts of clothes for a week.

“Deal.” Brooke smiles, all thoughts of rivalry gone and replaced with excitement of the memories they’ll make.

i. The Princess Bride

“Okay, is everyone ready?” Brooke stands in front of the TV, making sure Vanessa and Sam are settled on the couch with pillows and blankets and the cats, canyon-sized bowl of popcorn and cupcakes from Brooke’s sister Kameron’s bakery all ready for the night.

“Ready!” Vanessa yells. Brooke presses play, and Vanessa opens her arms for Brooke to snuggle into as the movie starts.

“At least you two aren’t wearing your costumes,” Sam teases. Vanessa and Brooke have probably been a little too eager in showing Sam that picture over the years, but Vanessa looked like a literal princess in her red Princess Buttercup dress, Brooke was the perfect Westley, and they got compliments through the entire party, so sue them for showing off. Vanessa still remembers the cool silk flowing around her and warming her hand on the soft bit of skin revealed by Brooke’s shirt.

“Don’t think we weren’t tempted,” Vanessa says. “They’re in the attic somewhere, I bet I could still fit in that dress–”

“Do we need to pause it already?” Brooke asks, and Vanessa swats at her before snuggling back down and watching the movie.

Vanessa finds herself watching her family more than the movie, watching Brooke’s eyes widen and her lips stretch into a grin like she’s never seen it before. Then she turns to Sam, who really has never seen it before. They’re skeptical at first, face blank, but then their brown eyes–so warm and expressive, like Vanessa’s–light up when the Dread Pirate Roberts reveals himself to be Westley. By the end, their smile is huge.

“You liked it, huh?” Vanessa asks.

Sam looks down. “I guess,” they say, and Vanessa knows their nine-year-old heart can’t quite admit something their parents like is cool, but it’s a start, and she’s counting this as a win in both her and Brooke’s column.

“Well, I’m ready for tomorrow!” Vanessa yells, pulling Brooke in for a kiss.

ii. Star Wars

Brooke knows the baby Yoda ugly sweater and Star Wars pajama pants are overkill, but she can’t help it. From the moment she first saw the movie as a seven-year-old, all she wanted was to be a Jedi like Luke and save the galaxy. She and Kameron made lightsabers out of foam swords and spray paint, and they ran around their background slicing through enemies and saving the day. Kameron had even made truffles decorated like the Death Star when Brooke told her what they were watching, her brown eyes warm with memories of their Jedi days.

Brooke doesn’t know whether this movie thing between her and Vanessa is a contest, but if it is, she doesn’t really care about it for this movie. She just wants to watch it with her kid, hope they find the same joy in it that she did.

Sam seems to be enjoying the truffles at least, and they shove another one in their mouth. “Aunt Kam’s stuff is so good,” they say with their mouth full, and Brooke agrees.

The music blasts and opening crawl creeps onto the screen, and Brooke grins, even when Vanessa rolls her eyes fondly and asks her continual question of why everyone else has such ‘weird-ass names’ and Luke’s is normal.

Brooke didn’t think anything would be better than the first time she saw it, in their living room with salty popcorn burning her lips and Kameron next to her, but watching it now, with her wife at her side and their kid on the other couch watching with wide eyes, just might be even better. She never thought she would have this life, a family around her like this, and she pulls Vanessa little closer, breathing in the familiar scent of her coconut shampoo.

Sam is grinning when the movie ends, and warmth rushes through Brooke’s chest, that her kid enjoyed something that means a lot to Brooke.

“That’s my favorite one so far,” they say sheepishly, and Brooke lets out a whoop.

“All right, all right, it’s only been two movies so far,” Vanessa says. “We’re goin’ to Neverland tomorrow, and then we’ll see what’s better.”

iii. Peter Pan

Vanessa feels like a professor as she stands in front of the TV, Sam and Brooke staring at her expectantly.

“Is this a presentation?” Brooke teases. “Should I take notes?”

“Oh please, you’re the one who loves presentations,” Vanessa says fondly. “No presentation–this movie did make me want to go into design, though. Oh! And it was the first sign that I was bi. Little kid me didn’t know if she wanted a flying boyfriend or a fairy girlfriend more.” Vanessa grins dreamily. She can still remember her heart fluttering the same way when she looked at Peter and his coppery hair as it did when she watched Tinkerbell pout, how it all made sense when she was seventeen and fully realized that she was bi for the first time.

“Start the movie, Ma!” Sam yells.

Vanessa does, then instantly pauses it, turning to Sam with worries in her mind. “Don’t get any stupid ideas from this movie, now!” she warns. “Don’t go flying around with people who show up in your window, no matter how cute they are! And Wendy was a child, acting all grown, Lord help us when you become a teenager–”

“Okay, Ness,” Brooke soothes, motioning for Vanessa to sit with her and pulling her into a hug when she does.

“I promise I won’t fly around with people in my window,” Sam says, and Vanessa smiles, reaching over and ruffling their brown waves.

“You better not,” Vanessa says, leaning back into Brooke, her wife still as cozy to cuddle with as she’s always been.

Vanessa’s dancing in place and belting out all the songs in no time. She’s known all the words since she was six, when she would perform the whole movie in her living room or sing them to herself as she drew fierce pirate coats and sparkly fairies with striped wings, and they’ve refused to leave her brain, even if she wishes she could have that space for something useful like where she put her phone.

Brooke’s not much of a singer, but she hums along, and when Sam’s soft voice hesitantly joins Vanessa’s, she knows the night is a success.

iv. Matilda

It’s not as action-packed as her other favorite movies on the list, but as a shy kid who always had her nose in a book, Brooke’s always had a soft spot for Matilda. After she had to accept that becoming a Jedi wasn’t a viable career path, it had been Matilda that gave her the idea to become a librarian. She could surround herself with books all day, and help people find the book they were looking for, introducing them to whole new worlds through the pages, just like she does with each bedtime story for Sam every night.

“This is a movie about a kid with magic powers, right?” Sam asks.

“Right,” Vanessa says, “and Mommy loves it because she’s a big nerd.”

“Hey!” Brooke protests, but Vanessa is laughing and giving her a warm hug.

“You know I love you for it,” Vanessa says simply, and Brooke hugs her back and knows it’s true.

It’s nice to watch a movie she hasn’t seen since she was a kid and find it still makes her smile the same way, still gives her the same hope at seeing a shy girl who loved books the way she did—and still does. Brooke has never been the confident, outgoing kid in so many movies. She was quiet and kept to herself, and Matilda gave her a world where she could be the hero. She hopes Sam always feels that way too, always knows that they can be the hero.

When the credits roll, Sam declares that it’s not their favorite off the list, but Brooke doesn’t mind.

v. Peanuts

“Why are these even on the list?” Sam asks as Vanessa fiddles with the TV. “I’ve seen all the Peanuts movies.”

“And you’ll see them again!” Vanessa yells. “This is different. They’re official now, on the list and everything.” She starts the Easter special and shuts down all the arguments, biting into a peanut butter cookie.

“All right, all right.” Sam gives in, but they’re not complaining. Sam once tried to make Riley dance like Snoopy, and Vanessa knows they love these movies just as much as she does.

“This is another thing that got me into fashion,” Vanessa says. “Because I didn’t know why they always wore the same boring old clothes in all the movies, so I drew them wearing some new ones.”

“Of course you did.” Brooke grins.

“Well, I had to jazz those outfits up! They’ve been wearing the same clothes forever!” Vanessa laughs. She’s always wanted people to wear clothes they feel like themselves in, and somewhere in between drawing new outfits for cartoon characters, she decided that was what she wanted to do, and it’s what she still does with her own little boutique, just up the street from the library where Brooke works. She loves getting to help people pick out the perfect outfit, watching them smile as they come out feeling as good as they had hoped.

She leans back as Charlie Brown and the others take them through all the seasons, from Easter to Halloween to Thanksgiving and finally Christmas, where Vanessa reaches for tissues and even Sam pretends they have dust in their eye. Vanessa always wanted to fight the other kids for being so mean to Charlie, and even as an adult, the urge is still there.

When the movie’s done, an idea pops into Vanessa’s hand. She whips out her phone and brings up the Charlie Brown Christmas soundtrack, yanking Brooke into the middle of the room and pulling her into a dance while Sam twirls around with Riley, cats watching from the couch, unimpressed.

“Ness, you’re making me dizzy,” Brooke giggles as Vanessa spins her faster and faster, until they almost crash into the Christmas tree.

Sam is cackling next to them, and Vanessa slows up, pressing her chest close to Brooke’s and melting as Brooke places a gentle kiss on the top of her head.

It’s her favorite movie night by far.

vi. Jurassic Park

All her movies on the list are special, but this one just might be the most special for Brooke. Because this is what she and Vanessa watched on their first date.

Brooke had started her first job at the library the same summer Vanessa started doing formal design sketches for a portfolio. She came to the library to get fashion books for ideas, and Brooke secretly hoped she would come back in every day, so they could make small talk and maybe she could say something funny to see Vanessa smile again. And almost every day, Vanessa came back.

Summer was half over and Brooke thought they would do nothing but talk with a library desk between them when Vanessa finally asked her to a movie in the park, both of them giggling as they set the date because they were finally going out after weeks of flirting and smiling and wondering if feelings were reciprocated. A dinosaur movie might not have been the most romantic choice for a first date, but they curled up together on a plaid blanket and let their fingers meet in the bag of buttery popcorn, and when Vanessa gave her a soft kiss as the end theme song played, Brooke knew she was the one.

She looks at her wife now, humming along to the opening theme and eating the dinosaur sugar cookie Kameron made, and knows that she’s still the one.

They snuggle up together and make dinosaur noises that cause Sam to look at them in annoyance, but it only makes them laugh harder.

They watch on the edge of their seats even though they know the ending, and Sam does the same, jumping every time a dinosaur pops out. When the end theme plays softly as the characters escape in the helicopter, Vanessa has tears in her eyes. Brooke’s not a big cryer–the last time she cried was probably when Sam was still a baby–but her eyes pool with dampness too, until she and Vanessa are holding each other and half-laughing, half-crying, because this movie is what brought them together.

“What are you doing?” Sam asks in alarm. “Why are you crying over a dinosaur movie?”

Brooke and Vanessa just laugh and exchange a soft kiss.

vii. The Muppet Christmas Carol

Christmas has always been Vanessa’s favorite holiday. As a kid, she fought her brothers every day to move the little Christmas tree counter on their Advent calendar, her excitement only growing as the day grew nearer. She’d just make it through the extra-long church service, and then she was free to play with her cousins and stuff herself with cookie after cookie and wake with the sunrise Christmas morning to jump in her parents’ bed.

Only now that she has her own child jumping in her and Brooke’s bed at an ungodly hour each Christmas does she realize why her parents would groan so loudly and what a little demon she must have been.

But her and Brooke don’t mind–they both love it, really, love all their traditions. There are the cookies they bake all month, the toy drive they help with at Sam’s school, and then Vanessa’s turn bringing Sam shopping to buy Brooke’s present and Brooke’s turn taking Sam to buy Vanessa’s present. The weekend after Thanksgiving, when they’re still stuffed with leftovers, the tree goes up, the three of them passing ornaments around while Vanessa narrates the history of how they got each one and almost falls on the tree trying to prove to Brooke that she can reach the tall branches. The tree is her favorite part, with the rainbow lights twinkling and the shining star looking over them. The tree is extra bright tonight, Christmas just days away, as Vanessa starts one of her favorite Christmas movies.

“This was my favorite to watch when I was pregnant with you,” Vanessa says to Sam. “The doctor said I had to go on bed rest, and I was so mad because it was almost Christmas and I wanted to do stuff. This was the next best thing.” She still remembers those long days, the pain in her back and hips and shoulders combined with the sadness of not being able to hang up lights or bake cookies or do much of anything. The Muppets at least made her smile, gave her a piece of Christmas she could have while stuck in bed. And when Sam was born perfectly healthy in January, she knew it had all been worth it.

“I swear, I heard Kermit in my sleep for weeks,” Brooke says, rolling her eyes but smiling anyway.

“You love Kermit and you know it,” Vanessa says.

Brooke just snorts, but Vanessa knows she’s right.

Vanessa knows most of the words—she really did watch this movie a ridiculous amount of times when she was pregnant—and finds her mouth moving along with the characters. The movie still makes her just as happy as it did when she was stuck in bed, makes her love Christmas and her family that much more. It doesn’t mean she’s forgotten the bet though, and the credits have just started to roll when Vanessa leaps from the couch and turns to Sam. “So?” she asks expectantly.

“So what?” Sam asks casually.

Vanessa huffs. “So, whose movies did you like better? Mine, right? Say mine.”

“No way.” Brooke pops up behind her. “Mine were way better.”

Sam just rolls their eyes. “Come on, you know I can’t pick between you two. You’re both my favorite.”

Vanessa melts then, pulling Sam into a bone-crushing hug, Brooke wrapping her arms around both of them.

“I guess we’ll just split the house stuff next week,” Vanessa says.

“You mean like we already do anyway?” Brooke snorts, holding them tighter.

Vanessa just smiles. She has her family, and tomorrow is their holiday party with all their friends, and then Christmas with her family and Brooke’s family, and her smile deepens. She watches the snow fall softly outside and knows this will be the best Christmas ever.
