Postcards from Snagglepuss (Minnesota State Fair edition)

So what's the interest in ham loaf all of a sudden?!

This evening's particular stop for Huck and I: The Hamline Church Dining Hall, a Minnesota State Fair staple going back to 1894 ... and serving rather tasty ham loaf dinners since at least the 1930's, itself something of a State Fair culinary legend.

Which, as it happens, has attracted especially such close chums as the Hair Bear Bunch (Hair, Square and Bubi) as much as walkabout and wondering if many a Minnesota State Fair visitor will recognise them after quite awhile off the air. Though this time, they've pretty much wrapped their summer road trip tradition of being part and parcel of bear mating season up in the North Woods.

"Yeah," Square Bear remarked in that rather rich voice of his, "what could come more relaxing and more stress relieving to us bears when summer comes around?"

"Of course, Snag and Huck, mating does play quite a part of our mating season road trip," Hair Bear was quick to add over bites of mashed potatoes and brown gravy. "Could anything be more refreshing, setting aside the mating component obviously, than some swimming and diving in the morning following quite an overnight's orgy?"

I couldn't help but be stunned (howbeit moderately) at the Hair Bears having some swimming and diving skill themselves; "I assume," Huck was quick to note, "such must come naturally to a bear."

Bubi, ever the excitable, over-the-top one, was quick to note where "just the sheer excitement of getting cooler and cooler in the early morning, just diving with nothing on but yourself, just feeling all the more interesting between the legs for some reason--" (Whereupon Square, sensing Bubi was probably going a little too over-the-top, went into that routine of shutting Bubi up with his forepaw, and asking Hair Bear "What exactly was Bubi just saying now?")

Certainly bringing a laugh there.

And not that far off--at the next table across the way, even--was Top Cat's clowder also tucking into ham loaf dinner themselves.

"So," Huckleberry Hound asked, "who recommended the ham loaf dinner here to your crew?"

To which TC remarked, "I have to acknowledge where, having trampled our hind paws quite the bit across the Fairgrounds all day, and enjoying quite our fill of corn dogs, the notion was bound to come along for some worthwhile, decent old-school home cooking as the highlight of our day at the Fair!"

Brain, the somewhat dopey one of the clowder, pointed out that "it's not often you can still get decent home cooking in the midst of cookie-cutter predictability!"

"Brain's probably right," Choo-Choo, otherwise a master of witty charm and sophistication which is rivalled only by Fancy-Fancy, was quick to add. "Especially absent any girlie shows that I would have certainly found enjoyable!"

"Girlie shows, as you put them, Chooch, are well in the past here," TC responded; "besides, you have plenty of other interesting stuff to take in at a fair--like 4-H."

"Oh, most definitely the 4-H stuff!" Huckleberry Hound responded almost excitedly. "Putting paid to the notion of country youth not having much worthwhile to do anyway, to begin with ... in fact, my wife, Clementine, was assisting with setting up a 4-H canning demonstration just the other day, even offering some advice to a few of the participants about sealing the lids on properly and tightly to make sure the whole came out properly."

"I never knew that Clementine was your wife now after singing about her all this time," chimed in Benny the Ball, TC's top leftennant.

"Indeed she is, Benny," was how Huckleberry responded.

And what ham loaf there was!

Now, for such of you curious as to the recipe for said ham loaf, 'tis:

Preheat oven to 325° F/160° C/Gas Mark 3. Combine loaf and sauce ingredients separately:

FOR THE LOAF: 1½ lbs. each ground ham (NOT ground pork) AND ground beef, chicken OR turkey 1 cup dry breadcrumbs 1 small onion, chopped ½ tsp. each salt, pepper, curry powder, ground sage and allspice 2 cups milk 3 eggs, slightly beaten, OR ¾ cup liquid egg

FOR THE SAUCE: 2 cups packed brown sugar ⅔ cup white vinegar ¼ cup prepared mustard

Pack the loaf mixture into a large baking pan, then spoon half the prepared sauce on top of the loaf. Bake for 90 minutes: drain grease to the extent feasable, spoon remaining sauce over the loaf, return to the oven and bake 30-45 minutes more.

(Oh, and one more thing: Those of you who have tried this receipt may want to leave behind some comment and let us all know how the experience turned out on your Hanna-Barbera-loving end.)

Rat Runners and Fury

How could i say no to my biggest fans! ^_^ this also gave me a good reason to write lmao

The day started innocently enough. The Ivory household was relatively quiet for once. Nyen wasn’t stomping around, Nyon was “borrowing” more magazines from who-knows-where, Randal and Sebastian had gone and some odd adventure something about cody at the gas station Master Luther was resting and the ratmen were… well, alive and causing chaos somewhere as usual. Perfect time for a little covert operation: feeding the ratmen. Again.

You crouched low in the pantry, carefully packing up a small stash of scraps—half a loaf of bread, some almost-cheese, and a suspiciously soft apple. “Alright, guys,” you whispered, peeking into the crack in the wall. “You know the drill.”

Robert poked his head out, his nose twitching nervously. “You sure about this?” he whispered back. “Last time, Nyen nearly turned me into a throw rug.”

“Relax,” you said, stuffing the food into a small cloth bag. “I’ll handle Nyen if he shows up. Now, hurry up before he—”

“HEY!”

Too late.

Nyen’s voice roared from somewhere down the hall, and the ground shook slightly as his heavy boots stomped closer. The ratman froze, his eyes mildly wide.

“Run!” you hissed, tossing the bag into Robert’s thands.

The ratman bolted, scurrying through the cracks and crevices of the house with impressive speed. You spun around just in time to see Nyen appear in the doorway, his eyes blazing with fury.

“TRAITOR!” he bellowed, pointing an accusatory claw at you. “You’re feeding them again?! You sneaky little—!”

“What?” you said, feigning innocence. “They looked hungry.”

“They’re always hungry!” Nyen snapped. “And you’re making it worse! Where are they?”

“I have no idea what you’re talking about,” you said, shrugging. “Maybe you should… cool off a little?”

Wrong answer. Nyen’s tail lashed like an angry whip as he stormed past you, sniffing the air like a bloodhound. “I can smell them,” he growled. “Where’d they go?”

You followed him, keeping a safe distance as he stomped through the house. Meanwhile, you casually dropped little clues for the ratmen to follow—a tap on the wall here, a soft whistle there. You couldn’t see them, but you knew they’d pick up on the signals.

Nyen suddenly stopped, his ears twitching. “There!” he snarled, lunging toward a small crack near the baseboard.

“Um-! not so fast!” you said, stepping in his way. “Maybe you should think this through. You’re scaring the rats.”

“Good!” Nyen barked, shoving past you. “They deserve it!”

In the next room, you heard the faint scuffle of feet. Robert was close to his escape route. You quickened your pace, throwing Nyen off just enough to give them more time.

“Over there! They went that way!” you shouted, pointing in the opposite direction.

Nyen paused, glaring at you suspiciously. “Why are you helping me all of a sudden?”

“Maybe I’m tired of stale bread,” you said with a smirk.

He didn’t buy it for a second. With a guttural growl, he turned back toward the crack in the wall, but it was too late. The ratmen had already slipped through their escape hole and disappeared into the labyrinth of tunnels beneath the house.

“NO!” Nyen roared, slamming his fist against the wall. “Goddamn rodents! Traitors! EVERYONE IN THIS HOUSE IS A TRAITOR!”

You couldn’t help but laugh. “Better luck next time, big guy.”

Nyen turned on you, his face a mask of pure rage. “You think this is funny?! You think you can just waltz around here undermining me?!” He stepped closer, his chest heaving. “You’re worse than the rats. Worse!”

“Aw, you say the sweetest things,” you said, grinning.

That was the final straw. Nyen snarled, grabbed your shoulder, and shoved you back. You stumbled but quickly recovered, twisting to throw off his grip with a dramatic, exaggerated spin. The move sent you both off balance for a second—comically enough to make even Nyen pause in confusion.

“What the fuck was that?!” he bellowed, his tail swishing furiously. “You’re messing with me now! ON PURPOSE?!”

“Sure am,” you said with a grin. “And I’m winning!”

Nyen let out a guttural scream of frustration, storming off down the hall while shouting a barrage of curses that grew increasingly incoherent. You caught words like “ungrateful,” “goddamn meddler,” and something that sounded suspiciously like a threat to ship you to Siberia.

You watched him go, trying not to laugh too loudly. “Better luck next time,” you muttered to yourself.

“You… stop,” came a thickly accented voice from behind you.

You turned to see Nyon standing there, holding a half-eaten pickle and looking unusually serious. His eyes—normally glassy and disinterested—were fixed on you with surprising intensity.

“Stop?” you asked, raising an eyebrow. “Stop what?”

“Annoying Nyen,” Nyon said slowly, his Russian accent thicker than usual. He gestured vaguely with the pickle. “Not… good. He… uh… very mad. Not safe.”

“What’s he gonna do? Growl at me some more?” you said, brushing it off.

Nyon shook his head, his expression unreadable. “No. He do…” He paused, struggling to find the words. “He do… bad. You stop.”

“What kind of bad?” you asked, narrowing your eyes.

Nyon opened his mouth to answer, but the sound of something crashing in the distance cut him off. He glanced over his shoulder, his usually relaxed demeanor slipping into something closer to… fear?

“You stop,” he repeated firmly, stepping closer. “Not joke. Big bad.”

Before you could press him further, he turned and shuffled away, muttering something in Russian under his breath.

You stood there, frowning, your mind racing. What did he mean by “big bad”? And why did he look so worried? Sure you pissed Nyen her and there but he wouldn't actually hurt you.. right?

Maybe this game with Nyen wasn’t as harmless as you thought…

MY CAT’S CHART 💋

his birth date is approximative. this is what the foster told me and they were monitoring him since he was a couple weeks old, so i went with it.

TAURUS SUN.

comfort over everything. and he gon lay on whatever make him feel comfy, he don’t gaf.

grooms himself. naps for like an hour. wakes up. then he grooms again. cycle continues.

he’s very patient. it takes a lot to get him to be upset with u. he don’t hiss or anything, he’ll complain meow when annoyed.

i have a very greedy cat. he is so loud and demanding when he wants to eat ur food.

PISCES MOON.

pretty shy and sensitive. he can be easy to overwhelm if u don’t know him.

he don’t like feeling smothered in any capacity and he don’t like being held too long. pushing him will cause him to hide.

he feels safe when given space (if u don’t know him) and then letting him decide if he wanna be closer. he’s a vibe reader.

very empathetic. when i was or felt sad, he’d always come in and check on me. he’d meow like “what’s wrong?” then just purr and lay with me. cats definitely aren’t always asocial.

because he’s so docile he usually won’t assert boundaries himself. i’d have to step in.

TAURUS MERCURY (Rx).

a real yapper. especially about food. makes sense b/c taurus rules the vocal chords.

makes a wide variety of sounds. chirps, chatters, trills (he sounds like a pigeon).

always purring. sometimes all i have to do is look at him and he’ll start purring.

his voice is light for the most part!

mercury is ur sense of community. Rx mercury people might be more on the shy side, and he prefers a small community.

CANCER VENUS.

a real cuddle bug. his love language is probably quality time or physical touch.

he is very clingy. will walk between my legs as i walk around. and i trip over him often.

he’s very sensuous in my opinion. he loves looking outside the window and loafing as he just takes the outside world in. very zen 🧘🏾

again loves to eat. food brings him great joy.

CANCER MARS.

conflict avoidant, but he can be territorial and defensive about whatever he considers to be his domain. he act like he run shit

the first day he met another dog, i saw a side of him i never seen. he puffed up big and crab walked, trying to dominate the energy.

my cat was definitely like “aight now…” like… i was pretty proud of him for trying!

but in tense situations, he kinda doesn’t hold his own. i remember i got a female cat (i surrendered her b/c the shelter thought it was best). she was lowkey hoeing him. 💀

ARIES JUPITER.

the shelter named him “Superman” because they said he was the bravest out of his litter mates, as he was born to a feral cat mother.

he is very adventurous and curious, despite his shyness. he just isn’t adventurous about people. but he loves to explore otherwise.

“carpe diem” is his expression for sure.

he’s so destructive though. and too curious sometimes. once he jumped on our closet shelf to knock down the muffins we purposefully hid from him. then he ate them

he also bit through my tarot cards

he jumped on the fridge and ate our baguette. imagine my shock when i saw the baguette with a cartoonish bite mark in it.

PISCES SATURN.

he appreciates a good nap. which is something i love. because one thang i know two thangs certain, he gon take a mf nap.

saturn shows how we rest / work. so his being in pisces really shows that he values the rest aspect of saturn.

he so hardheaded sometimes but that’s because (1) he has the comparable of a two year old but (2) he doesn’t believe in rules.

because well… he’s a cat.

but i love the way he doesn’t let my human values stop him from living his best life

and i love our chart energies.

his sun is conjunct my venus (in the eleventh house). like it’s giving best friends, lmao. his south node is conjunct my fifth house moon too, it’s giving we really been besties.

his south node is conjunct my bf/co guardian’s moon too. tbh we all are just super watery (lmao) so it’s a lot of emotion in our trio dynamic. i also love how his venus and mars is in my first house/in my bf’s eleventh house.

it’s wild cuz i deadass feel like this cat can read my mind sometimes. he just knows me. and i wish i could explain to him how much i love him.

i’ll love him to the end of time. he’s my best friend, confidant, and there will never be a cat like him. 🤍 the universe sent u to me. ˚୨୧⋆｡˚ ⋆

I tried to draw various loaf cats just so I can figure out how to draw them

They were based entirely on this one picture of a loaf cat from a Tower of Adventures promo

It was just various poses and such, though I did also draw what’s supposed to be a loaf cat Dark Choco, since I’ve seen art of him as a cat. He’s supposed to be like some sort of chocolate swirl so that I can somehow incorporate the white streaks

Not gonna lie I now want to eat a chocolate loaf now

Then I drew loaf cat Dark Choco with cake hound Red Velvet because cat and dog and also I know there’s someone I follow who likes darkvelvet and also sometimes draws cat Choco
