Going To Church Makes People Happier. Regular churchgoers may persuade more pacifying lives than stay-at-home folks because they create a network of close friends who provide formidable support, a new study suggests. Conducted at the University of Wisconsin, the researchers found that 28 percent of relations who attend church weekly say they are "extremely satisfied" with life as opposed to only 20 percent who never give rise to services baal lamby krny k tips. In addition to church attendance, respondents were asked how many dense friends they had in and outside of their congregations, and questions about their health, education, income, post and whether their religious identity was very important to their "sense of self". Respondents who said they experienced "God's presence" were no more seemly to report feeling greater satisfaction with their lives than those who did not. Only the sum of close friends in their congregations and having a strong religious identity predicted feeling outrageously satisfied with life. One reason may be that "friends who attend religious services together give spiritual-minded identity a sense of reality," the authors said. The study drew a skeptical response from one expert. "Some of their conclusions are a unimaginative shaky," said Dr Harold G Koenig, numero uno of the Center for Spirituality, Theology and Health at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, NC. Castleblayney is near the border with County Armagh in Northern Ireland, and lies on the N2 road from Dublin to Derry and Letterkenny. . Castleblayney is probably most famous for the scenic beauty of Lough Muckno. Muckno Lake, also known as Lough Muckno, is a freshwater lake in the northeast of Ireland. It’s home to Lough Muckno Leisure Park Recently, major angling access works have been undertaken and Lough Muckno is now an international standard angling venue. Park is open all year, seven days a week. Some history of Lough Muckno and my hometown . Lough Muckno Leisure Park in Castleblayney was originally part of the estate of the Blayney family from whom the town of Castleblayney takes its name. The twelfth Lord Blayney, the last to hold the title, sold the estate in 1853 to Henry Thomas Hope, after whom Hope Castle is named. Hope gave his name to the internationally known Hope Diamond, which had been cut from the Tavernier, the largest blue diamond in the world. The diamond had formed part of the French Crown Jewels but was stolen during the French Revolution. It later turned up at an auction in London and was bought by Henry Thomas. It was reputed to be unlucky however and Henry Thomas disposed of it in 1867. The Hope family had fallen on lean times by 1916 and sold out to return to England. Hope Castle now houses a restaurant and lounge and the grounds of the estate now form the wonderfully scenic Lough Muckno Leisure Park. Follow the forest trails or enjoy the spectacular views over the lake. There are numerous walking trails, a waterski & wakeboarding club, fishing, nature walks and Picnic areas. There’s also a world class golf course with views over the Lough. . Hope Castle at one time, contained a bar and restaurant. The Shamrock Irish car that didn’t have the Luck of the Irish

One critic called it, ‘A small car wearing a big American car costume,’. Could this be one of the world’s most collectable motor cars, albeit for all the wrong reasons?

This is the Shamrock, a little known and probably the rarest Irish car which began production in Castleblaney, Co Monaghan 55 years ago. According to The Complete Catalogue of British Cars published in the early 1960s:

“The Shamrock car was a Spike Rhiando design based on the Austin A55 engine and other components. A factory in Tralee had been acquired for the production of this glass-fibre bodied car in 1959 but only a handful were produced.”

Alvin ‘Spike’ Rhiando first made his name in the 1930s as a star of the speedway track and was initially billed on posters and fliers as an Italian but mysteriously and probably more comically, he later added American and Canadian to his list of nationalities. Some of his enemies at the time put about the story that he was actually a Deptford lad from south London, a real cockney chancer,  “a Londoner with a touch of showmanship”.

Rhiando was a bit of an International Man of Mystery in his day, a lot of his reputation resulting from a series of ripping yarns he wrote in 1939 for the sporty Topical Times magazine. In these articles, Spike gave gripping accounts of his multi-crash escapades racing cars in the United States.

He related one hair-raising incident when he claimed of being hurled from the cockpit of his sports car. Of course, he just picked himself up, made some quick repairs to the badly damaged car and got back in the race, to finish third-place in an 80-lap race.

Other tall tales appeared around his life and persona such as him being a daring motorbike rider on the wall of death and also as a fearless wing-walker with Red Herman’s flying circus, and stories of how he had become pally with superstars such as Jimmy Cagney and Mae West during his time as a top Hollywood stuntman.

Like a real-life Walter Mitty, he would tell of his adventures in the Saharan desert, during the 1930’s running guns until he was captured by nomadic tribesmen and his subsequent rescue by the French Foreign Legion.

Suspiciously, a variation of the same French Foreign Legion story appeared two decades later, in 1953 when Spike told Motor Cycling magazine that he’d recently been road-testing a new design of glass-fibre motorbike sidecar which broke down in the Sahara desert. This breakdown in the middle of one of the most inhospitable places on earth again necessitated the assistance of the French Foreign Legion in his rescue. The French Foreign Legion later became a team of French geologists?

Whatever one may believe about all his escapades, there is no doubt at all that he was an accomplished and celebrated race car driver and before the outbreak of World War II  Rhiando was one of the stars of the short-lived fad of midget car racing when it was in its heyday.

After the war, he failed to revive interest in midget car racing and so he turned his hand to speeding 500cc cars around the circuits at Goodwood and Silverstone where he pitted his skills against the legendary Stirling Moss.

As you can just imagine, a midget car revival did take place here in Ireland in the post-war years, with one meeting at Santry Speedway attracting 6,000 people in 1948. Midget cars were hand-built using motorbike engines.

By the late 1950s, with his racing days all but behind him, Spike was brought on board an enterprise to build a big, luxury car in Ireland for the American market known as the Shamrock. The idea was the brainchild of US businessmen William K Curtis and James Conway. Curtis and Conway established a company, Shamrock Motors Ltd and looked at building a factory in Tralee, Co Kerry, as the production centre.

This plan did not transpire because of some teething problems so the whole project was transferred to Castleblayney in Monaghan. It became obvious early on that despite Spike Rhiando’s prowess on the track and with his bravado, he actually  hadn’t got a breeze about how to design a proper car. The proportions were all wrong, leading one commentator to describe the Shamrock as looking more “like a parade float than a car”.

The fibre-glass body had colossal overhangs on the front, rear and sides. To make matters worse, if you were unfortunate enough to get a puncture the rear wheels couldn’t be changed without the messy business of dislocating the rear axle.

The Irish Shamrock was designed to take on the big American gas guzzlers but the Austin A55 engine was far too puny to carry its heavy frame at any respectable speed. In the words of one US critic, the Shamrock looked “like a small English car wearing a big American car costume”.

As production pressed ahead in Castleblaney, the owners talked about rolling out 3,000 Shamrocks in the first year on their way to a total run of 10,000. In the end, only about eight or ten came off the production line before cash-flow problems and negative publicity slammed the brakes on the project.

Some reports allege that after the factory shut its doors the unused parts were transported the short distance to Lake Muckno where to this day they sleep with the fishes. Alvin ‘Spike’ Rhiando reportedly died in Ireland in 1975. His granddaughter Romayne spoke for more than herself when she said:

“Spike died leaving behind many unsolved mysteries which I would love to piece together.”

The Shed – A Place of Worship

Dundalk is a town so fiercely steeped in tradition that to an outsider it can often seem like a land lost in time. Throughout the 20th century, the Town took immense pride in its industrial identity which centred around three industries – the manufacturing of Carroll’s cigarettes, the brewing of Harp Lager and of course, the Railway industry. However, as the world moves further and further away from the time of industrialism, one aspect of Dundalk’s culture stands the test of time – It’s football club.

Dundalk FC is Ireland’s second most successful club and was founded in 1903 as Dundalk Great Northern Railway Association Club. For 100 years the club has called Oriel Park, on the Castleblaney Road, it’s home. In that century, little has changed about the ground, with the exception of the installation of the most modern pitch surface in the league. Oriel still houses its fans in either a rickety stand from the 1960’s or the mighty Shed.

While the 500 seater stand is maintained for the more reserved and relaxed observers of the game we call beautiful, The Shed is the real beating heart of Oriel, and in a wider respect, the entire town. Often bursting beyond the seams of its 200 seats, it is considered the house of worship by at least half of the 3,500 fans who descend upon the Castleblaney Road every other Friday.

The marching drum which takes up residence in the centre standing area of The Shed on those Friday fixtures booms out the evenings orders for the Dundalk FC faithful. On May 11th, Sligo Rovers rolled into town with a win securing top spot in the league over fierce foes Cork City. The game hung in the balance after a penalty for each side just before half time had the teams level in the dying embers. On the pitch, Dundalk were knocking on Sligo’s door, in The Shed they were threatening to kick it down. Agitation was beginning to seep in. The drum-led singing was reaching fever pitch just as the news that Cork had been held goalless by Derry reached Oriel.

Chances came, first from Robbie Benson who blazed just wide from range. Next from Marco Tagbajumi, who hit the bar with a bicycle kick that threatened to send the Shed Side Army into hysteria. Then in the 91st minute, almost as if he was lifted upon the shoulders of every individual in The Shed, Pat Hoban rose highest to head home from a Jamie McGrath cross. In that split second between the ball leaving Hoban’s head and rattling the back of the net, it seemed as if the entire town gathered beneath ancient corrugated metal roof fell silent. The heartbeat of the drum stopped. Then chaos.

Head of the Dundalk FC supporters club, Danny O’Connell, was the first to declare that “We are top of the league” as he claimed his place (topless) in front of The Shed as the Orchestrator to it’s Choir. When the final whistle blew, he led the chants of “Dundalk FC, the team for me” while The Shed’s messiah in Stephen Kenny marched his squad over to thank the town’s faithful for their vital contribution in the victory.

Observing a Friday night in The Shed is a truly eye-opening experience. It is clear that to these supporters, following Dundalk FC is far more than simply taking in 90 minutes of 22 men kicking a ball. It is a communal worship in much the same fashion going to mass is. Songs are boomed out with the passion that only someone completely devout could muster. Prayers are pleaded with a force entirely out of the individuals control and, at the end of the day, supporters experience something that can only be described as overwhelming joy.
