I swear I’m not a hater for modern and/or digital anime, especially not with the many times I’ve defended new getters art style but MAAAAN why is casshern sins visually so much better looking then most recent digital animes? Like the art style probably isn’t for everyone given it’s still kinda bug eye/same face syndrome-y but even the faces are still different from how most of them do it. And the colors and the line art… they blend beautifully together that even if it’s clear it’s digital it has this painted feel to it.

Why can’t more new animes try to be this unique with its art style 😭

I understand that most people will be upset/disappointed in the lack of quality media production as the strikes go on but personally I think the last ‘new’ media I watched was. SWTCW s7. I feel insane for thinking ‘oh thank fuck I can finally get caught up on all those cool looking shows that my mutuals have blogged about for the last 3 years’ but it’s my truth 😌

I appreciate what the live action did with the resources they had at the time, but for me, the best adaptation of Casshern is by far the 2008 anime Casshern Sins.

UNCLE GAMER STUFF #30

An online friendlydoo was asking about Casshern recently and so I yoinked out my copies of the US releases of the second and third anime’s (don’t think the original has a US release...), and we talked about it just a bit but what was really funny was deciding I’d keep my eye out for any other releases I didn’t have then like... the next weekend, finding the live action dvd set at the half price books.

You might notice from some... left behind bit of evidence, that they are all purchases from HPB and uh... yah, well, newer HPB barcode stickers actually come off super clean if you remember to remove them more or less immediately.  But the anime dvds... eh... well I started to take the stickers off but they started tearing and leaving stuff behind so I just immediately gave up cuz I’d rather have the stickers be clean and on then off and a ripped mess in their place.  Especially the Casshern Sins dvds as they aren’t laminated/plastic, so they’re not smooth, they weirdly have a very porous papery texture that was going to make the tearing from the stickers even worse.  I almost wish I left the sticker on the live action set so they all matched XD

If you’re not familiar, Casshern (changed to Casshan in the US at first as you can see on oldest of the sets), is originally an anime from the early 70′s, published by the legendary Tatsunoku, and is a long standing influence on lots of media that came after it.  The story of a boy turned into a powerful cyborg to combat robots originally created by his father, who have taken over the world. Casshern would go on to be a major influence for obvious things like Mega Man, and less obvious things like Raiden’s cyborg body in MGS4.

I haven’t watched the live action show yet, but the 93 OAV and 2008 re-imagining Casshern Sins are both really good.  Sins in particular did a fantastic job taking the simple premise of the original and really turning the idea sideways, adding interesting ideas about the world, as well as poignant discussion about life and death, to the story.  If you would only watch one version, I highly recommend Casshern Sins.

Casshern Sins Tribute Fan Animation

Early 2010, I was introduced by my big brother, of an Anime named Casshern Sins. It originally broadcast in 2008, Casshern Sins tells the story of a world after humans created Robots and they took over. These Androids run the world with an Iron fist. Their leader, Braiking Boss. Humans were becoming extinct, Robots were the only thing alive and taken over. A mysterious girl named Luna was chosen by the people to bring salvation.        Braiking Boss sent three of his people to kill Luna, resulting in events of war. Hundreds of years later, the world is decaying. There are so little humans left. Only Robots remain. The Earth is started to become poisonous to live. Killing the remaining humans and rusting robots. Due to this calamity, robots are fearing their lives and are scared. Casshern appears, disappeared after the events of Luna's assassination, arrives with no memory of the life he led before. The robots fear him and Casshern is confused, not knowing his purpose to live. Casshern Sins inspired me as an Animator because it showed a decaying world yet beautiful. The world of Casshern Sins is dark yet hopeful. The animations is very fluid, showing the rust of the decaying world and showing Casshern as beautiful as he is. Every motion he does is like Ballerina. The Anime is Animated by MADHOUSE. One of the acclaimed animation studios in Japan. If you haven't watched this Anime, this animation I did is only a taste of this Tatsunoko Superhero.This is an inspired animation showing you that you need to watch it yourself in order to see all the beautiful MADHOUSE put into this Anime. CASSHERN SINS (2008)

I need everyone to know that I went and actually watched ゴジラ for this chapter and it was so fucking good actually (things said by a guy who is chronically decades late to the party)? Why do I keep thinking I don't like tokusatsu? I so do any time I watch it. One of my friends got me into Kamen Rider Geats and it's also good as hell? I saw the bizarre Casshern live action movie when I lived in Japan and it slapped real hard? I clearly need to put more tokusatsu into my brain.

Unfortunately my brain hates to Watch Media, so it's slow going no matter what, but I mean, I could spare a few hours now and then to just pull up something classic off of the Internet Archive, I'm sure. Especially if I manage to relate it to writing I guess.

(Also I feel the need to toot my own horn again that I barely needed the subtitles. For someone who hasn't been in Japan since 2008, I'm doing pretty damn good.)

"V, buddy, did you ever have time to watch TV?" Glitch asked, flipping through the channels just by looking into the infrared receiver and blipping patterns at it. "Mostly just the news," X admitted. "It wasn't much of a priority, and I was usually too busy." "Well, that's sad. Wanna watch a movie?" "Sure." As far as trying new things went, that seemed pretty innocuous, X thought, and in any case, one of Glitch's hands had found his hair and started absentmindedly playing with it. X wasn't going anywhere for a while, and that was fine; if he didn't go anywhere, that meant Glitch couldn't, either, which was his end of the deal taken care of. "Sweet. How much do you know about kaiju movies?" Glitch asked, pulling a movie up in the maze of menus. Valentina emerged, freshly clean, as dressed as she cared to be in the summer, and still joyfully sipping her shake. "Oh shit, is that the original original Godzilla?" she asked "It's Gojira, thank you, and yes," said Glitch. "I love this shit."

Look, a totally safe chapter where nothing weird or troubling happens at all! I would never lie to you, which is true, so you can trust me. :)

(Though it does have some of my more favorite and absolutely least-expected character development, and that actually isn't a lie. For real. I mean it. ...I'm never getting my credibility back from my own evil clutches ever again, am I.)

Also, yeah, I did post this at 2am my time, but that means it's up and ready for my partner to read on their way to work, and also that I don't have to worry about getting distracted and posting it later than I'd meant to. Why worry! Post early! Problem solved! I'm going to eat an unreasonable amount of Cocoa Puffs and go to bed.
