Still thinking about how Casey Jones from TMNT 1987 became a Fricking Mess Without Relying on Dead Parents Origin
(Is it Wrong to think Casey Jones 1987 might have an Abusive Parents or Father who wants him to be Very Masculine??)

Hiya! I’ve recently started watching 87 tmnt (out of order, but so far haven’t run into any issues with that), and I was wondering if you had any specific episodes you’d recommend? Whether it’s because it’s got really good writing or it gives a good understanding of a specific character or it’s just generally enjoyable - whatever the reason may be, I’d be interested to hear. So far it’s been a really fun time and I’m excited to keep watching!
Ohhh! Ok. So let’s see… you definitely want to watch the 1st season, it’s only 5 episodes. I think I’m gonna recommend too many here… But!
Splinter No More
The Big Blow Out (has my favorite Brains and Brawn moment) though you may need to watch the previous episode or two since this is a season finale and you might be a bit confused
(Enter the RatKing, Enter the Fly, Return of the Fly, Invasion of the Punk Frogs, Leatherhead Terror of the Swap, 50 Foot Irma, Casey Jones Outlaw Hero, Yusagi Yojimbo, Michelangelo Meets Mondo Gecko, Raphael Meets his Match (Mona Lisa), Slash the Evil Turtle from Dimension X, all seem like good episodes since you see these characters in other iterations.)
The Making of Metalhead (I really like this one)
Take Me To Your Leader, The Four Musketeers, Leo vs Tempestra, Leonardo Lightens Up, Beware the Lotus
Splinter Vanishes
Cowabunga Shredhead
The Big Cufflink Caper
Donatello’s Duplicate, and Night of the Dark Turtle (also the episode with Triceratons)
Dirk Savage Mutant Hunter, Combat Land, Invasion of the Krangazoids, Shredder Triumphant
I love a few of the Red Sky episodes like Cry H.A.V.O.C! And Cyber-Turtles! But they do attempt more of a serialized story here. So I would watch from the beginning.
-
There’s a bunch of other episodes I want to see like Raphael Knocks Them Dead, Back to the Egg, Adventures in Turtle Sitting, Michelangelo Meets Bugman, Enter Mutagen Man, What’s Michelangelo Good For, BugMan, Planet of the Turtloids part 1&2
-
I’ve referenced The Ninja Sword of Nowhere, Raphael Turtle of a Thousand Faces, and I plan to reference Donatello Makes Time, sort of in a future chapter
@iztarshi @snoftshell-snurtle @yellowhollyhock @pumpkinpie59
In case you want to add some ideas!

Sorry I met post this last night the rest of chapters will be on Ao3 but here's the completed chapter 1 hope guys forgive me about this I haven't really wrote fanfic for anyone other myself for while which was mostly self satisfaction fics I had in brief spurts of inspiration I had so understand this might be a bit oocish for now and hopefully it gets better and in this au is more about the how turtles and friend react with dc April and jason are just tools that and if happen to write a good love story along the way is good to.
The Red Hood ,The Red Head, The Big Bats, And The Big Green Turtles.
They miss being normal
Things about this au this all started when the Turtles where 13 and April was 16 she’s been with the Turtles for 5 years after her father dies in this au she only has 3 human friends in this au Irma who doesn’t know anything about the Turtles. Casey Jones who left for college and hopefully to go pro in hockey also he going for a physical education degree. An Karai who is currently in Japan trying to take over the foot clan their from shredder.
Jason in this au is friends with all outlaws and Rose he’s been back in Gotham since he was 17 and a crime lord. He’s been and is on good terms with Bruce for most part they can be in same room and have pleasant conversation as long as the joker not brought up. He doesn’t like Ra’s for a few reasons a lot because of Tim although don’t tell him that and he feels used by Taila
Jason has no idea why he’s fighting alien robots with almost 6ft tall turtles, or why the girl he started dating a month ago is also fighting said alien robots but he wasn’t really going to question it. He was fighting alien robots makes a lot of things easier if you don’t question them wait are those fucking ninjas and why did the turtle in red say their name like it’s a bad thing. Jason was really rethinking coming to New York to go drinking by himself was a bad idea maybe if he at least brought Roy he wouldn’t be in this mess.
1 month ago, and 2 weeks after Jason’s 21 birthday
Jason was getting sick of always having someone tag along every time he went drinking, for his 21st birthday wasn’t the problem, but the 4 times he tried after that though. The first time doing it solo Dick showed up not 10 seconds after his first shot the next tine he did it was in star city and Roy showed up before even his first shot. The third time it had to be a joke because why did Rose fucking Wilson show up at the bar he was drinking at in central city she normally never even visit central city. The fourth time he knew it was joke because he went to the most sewer rat bar in Gotham and for fuck sake why was Bruce their wearing a fucking fake mustache. Jason wasn’t really annoyed at not drinking alone if he actually wanted to do that he would just stay home and buy a few beers with Bruce’s credit card but it was the fact that he kept running into people he new he just wanted to get drunk and make a few mistakes but no now somebody he new was their and he can’t go embarrassing himself in front of them he had reputation to up hold. So that’s why he’s in New York he knows almost no hero’s who even touch New York so he thought no problems.
Jason was a few drinks in when he first saw her it looked like the first time she ever been in bar by herself and Jason thought why would she choose such a warn down bar like this. Jason took a shot for confidence and approached her thinking the most he could do is keep her company.
“Hello their beautiful looking kind of lonely mind if I join.” Jason say with his buzzed confidence
“Hmph ha ha ha are you serious my ex had better pick up lines.” the red headed girl says
“Sorry I never been the kind of guy to try pick up a girl this way.” Jason says with a slightly bruised pride
“Oh so how you do it mister aren’t you looking lonely miss.” Her blue eyes smiled behind her glass
“honestly most of the time we just start dating or they fall for bad boy charm” Jason with a cocky smile
“Sorry dated one bad boy don’t know if I need another” her red hair drops a bit but she says with a cheer in her voice
Jason doesn’t know actually why he tried flirting with her Jason knew it wasn’t good to get involved with a civilian Isabel taught him that he missed the flight attendant. But maybe it was the alcohol In his system, or it was the fact he wanted to ignore the hero stuff that’s also probably why he wanted to drink without anyone he new he just wanted a night where he’s okay to be somebody other than Jason Todd the red hood, the son of Batman in somebody’s eye just Jason.
“I never introduced myself I’m Jason I’m not just a bad boy I also happen to read pride and prejudice.” Jason says in half cocky smile with another swig of his drink
“Okay mister Jason tell me your favorite quote and I’ll tell you my name” Her smile softens
“I cannot fix on the hour, or the spot, or the look or the words, which laid the foundation. It is too long ago. I was in the middle before I knew that I had begun.” “I know the original quote is about falling in love but it’s like I lived my life by it” Jason says trying to hide the emotions he feels when he says it
“My names April so you where telling the truth about reading it” April say with a reassuring smile
Jason collects himself for a moment he’s kinda surprised how far he’s come along in this conversation. Jason really was only Jason right now no baggage to unravel yet and he’s okay with that right now it only him, April, his slowly blurring vision, and the hope maybe he could get a date out of this.
“So miss April tell me something other than your name please”. Jason say with a half smile
“Well currently I’m trying to be a journalist but to get the last 5 credits of my degree I need to intern under another journalist for a year.” April says with a slight annoyed frown on her face
“so what’s the problem can’t find respectable enough journalist or something else” Jason says trying to offer a chance to vent
“It’s not that it’s just any intern ship I apply for needs me full time and my home life just doesn’t allow that right now” April says with happier expression
Jason wants to call in a favor from Clark or Lois so bad right know he really could solve this girls problems with a phone call. But Jason was taught by Bruce, Ra’s, Dick, and Talia you can’t solve all the problems even if two them he would stab and not regret it and Bruce and Dick have been off his shit list for a good minute. But all of them where right he can’t just solve her problem for no reason but Jason wanted to do he makes a compromise.
“Okay that’s problem I could possibly help with” Jason says with cockiest smile yet
“Oh how so” April says with curiosity
“So a family friend is a journalist I could put in a word for and give you a chance at something buuut with it would be uup to you to convince them to agree to whatever youuu propose” Jason say with seriousness but with slurring
“Are you serious why would you do that for me” April says questionably
“Well I could ask you for a date as compensation but instead here’s what in going to do I give them a word if they give you a chance you go on date with me as celebration if they don’t drop my number we never talk again” Jason says with a smile
“Well mister Jason you got a deal and if don’t get I might stillll give you a chaaaasnccce for at least not being a creeeep” April tries to say a little flirty
Jason grabs a napkin and calls the waiter over to closes his tab and ask to borrow a pen and writes his number down
“call me in the morning I’ll set up an interview” Jason say as gets and walks over to April
Jason kisses the back of April hand and says as looks into her eyes once more ”Did you admire me for my impertinence?”
April laughs “yeah I did.”
Jason offers to pay for April’s tab as well but she’s says it’s okay and as Jason leaves he wonders if he’s doing the smart thing involving April in his life.
April was tired, The Turtles where getting on her nerves a little yeah they where her little brothers in her eyes but still April missed Casey Johns. Although they dated for awhile and lived together and also one maybe 5 good humans who actually new about the turtles. But then Casey Jones afford a full ride scholarship and a almost guaranteed spot on the hockey team for some big school in North Dakota. Both April and him knew this was only chance out of this life and chance to full fill his dream of going pro.
April didn’t blame him but she could still be mad dammit then he comes back for your 21 birthday a week ago and their it is the spark. But then he leaves again now April here drinking in a bar she never been to because she only been 21 for a week and she had pass up on another internship. Also this the first time she’s been in a bar by herself and honestly it probably wasn’t a smart idea.
When Jason first approached her she felt like he was similar to Casey but she was wrong he was a little awkward and had already a few to many drinks in his system. But without much he Offered to help with internship, he let her rant although he was bit to drunk he answered all her questions honestly. April actually wanted to give it a shot although she could see how it could look like a rebound. She hopes the turtles won’t give her hard time about this.
After she left she knew how to get home and it wasn’t by car she wished it was sometimes she walked be behind the bar and found the manhole picked up and went down. She had a normal apartment but that was only for mail and throwing away of dirty money they took from shredder or the purple dragon’s and honestly she wished they just had over to the police but nope. Officially April’s a college student who works for nights at TCRI Donnie faked it for her who make a pretty penny their all though that’s just so she could have the fake address most money goes for food and other essentials for the lair.
Getting to lair is never easy since it technically apart of section of abandoned sewer. But April was taught by master splinter even drunk she navigate theses sewers and make all the jumps needed. When she finally gets close she knows because it always has a hint pizza coming from it.
Ralph was only one up it appeared she could hear Splinter snoring so she new he was asleep so it was safe to assume they other where as well. Although Donnie could be working in his lab but she didn’t hear anything so not likely and Leo normally doesn’t stay up on slow nights. Ralph was probably awake ether waiting for her return or was playing the pinball machine again.
Ralph in a rough voice While not looking away from pinball machine ”So your back form the bar April”
“Whooos said I went to the bar “ April tries to lie
Ralph says with a bit of worry “April I can smell booze from here, and I see your stumbling I don’t even know how you made it back without getting hurt. You also just slurred you words together I might not be a detective even I can see your drunk”
Ralph takes a breath looks her up and down “ I know why you went to bar and probably not the best for this conversation but April I get it your lonely and all other humans who know about us are old, evil, or we can’t meet often. And it doesn’t help you can’t bring yourself to live normal life”
April went silent maybe it was alcohol or it was Ralph being right on mark. Unlike Casey who joined this as like a helping hand, April was kind of forced into this and feels she owes the Turtles so much. April knows she doesn’t she helped them as much as they helped her. They become her family when none of hers where left she can’t abandon them Casey still had a sister, and a mom he didn’t need a family the only reason he stayed as long as he did was for her. An as long she was their sister she wasn’t abandoning them.
“Can we talk about this in morning when I’m not drunk” April use as excuse to leave the conversation
“Fine, but know this I know full well your capable of having a full on ass complex conversation. Even when drunk splinter taught us all how to maintain cognitive thinking even under the worst hallucinogens being a bit drunk is same as fully lucid to you” Ralph says with a tone that says this isn’t over yet
“Ok just let me sleep it off and Ralph your right” April says with defeat
Ralph says “About what”
April open her rooms door ”probably everything”

Casey Jones, Outlaw Hero - TMNT 1987
It’s the oddest version of the character. He remained mostly unexplored even after the success of the first movie. But why was he so different? In this video I explore the Fred Wolf’s version of Casey Jones.

What do you think makes Casey from rottmnt so appealing, and how is she different from other Caseys from the rest of the tmnt series?
fuck yeah!
Casey instantly became a favorite of mine the moment she appeared.
Even with being her being an antagonist for the majority of the series, how could you ever dislike her? I think she's not only one of the funniest characters in Rise, she's also one of the most interesting!
First of all, she is the Casey Jones of Rise. Not Junior, as much as I love him. He's Casey Jones's son, just like how Casey Marie Jones is Casey Jones's daughter in Ronin.
She's aggressive as hell and a trained soldier since she was a little kid, but she's not aggressive and intense to the point she's annoying. Her intenseness and energetic nature is what makes her so appealing to me. She's so!!! Ugh!!! I can't even explain it!! Her emotions are so strong and she feels them so greatly and fuck, Casey Jones and strong emotions has been a theme for so long its great to see it so much in this Casey!
I'll probably edit this later because i cant focus rn. For now. I LOVE YOU CASEY JONES!!!!!
What sets her apart from other Caseys?
She's the only one, as far as I'm aware, that's a reccuring antagonist in the series.
Casey Jones is usually a friend to the turtles, along with April O'Neil. Rise Casey doesn't become an ally until the last episode.
Casey Jones is usually a vigilante, an outlaw hero. Rise Casey is actively on the bad side, The Foot Clan.
Casey Jones is always April O'Neils love interest... Rise Casey unfortunately isn't 😔 but they have a homosexual rivalry going on and i think thats even better

Maybe Casey Jones keeps his Hockey Mask on so the Business People wouldn't Noticed his Bandages, Stitches and Scars so they don't get Suspicious of him during the Job Interviews????
(I know Casey Jones 87 still doesn't show his Face in the 1987 TMNT Cartoon and IDW Comics but NECA Toys did make a New Face for the Outlaw Hero so its Debatable whether that's what his Face looks like or Not)
The Turtles: Okay, Casey. We need you to go undercover to help us get inside information on this company’s evil plans. To do that, you need to apply for a job at the company and not look suspicious.
Casey: Yeah, I can do that.

"Casey Jones - Outlaw Hero"
Season 3, Episode 23
First US Airdate: November 20, 1989 First BBC UK broadcast: November 11, 1991
A masked vigilante begins a one-man war on New York’s criminals.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles season three rolls on with "Casey Jones - Outlaw Hero". Series mainstay David Wise, whose work we saw most recently in "Take Me to Your Leader", is the credited writer again here.
For the first time I can remember, we get an extended intro for this episode that doesn’t involve the Turtles, Shredder and his bunch, or even the members of the Channel 6 team. Mirroring the very first episode of the show (“Turtle Tracks”), we learn that once again New York is facing a crime wave. Tellingly, the actual crimes we see take place now are extremely petty and by this point, no actual guns are ever explicitly on display.
A man is pulled into an alley and asked to hand over his wallet, along with any bubble gum in his possession; A robber holds up a bakery, demanding an oatmeal cookie and a prune Danish in addition to all the money in the register; finally, a sporting goods store is ransacked by three decidedly goofy burglars. Each time they’re foiled by a man in a hockey mask with tattered clothes, who deals out justice in a very cartoony manner – although at least some of his actions, like sling-shotting all the weights on an exercise machine, could legitimately kill somebody if they made contact. The mystery crimefighter, who speaks like a caricature of Dirty Harry, announces his name as Casey Jones to no-one in particular.
This is the second episode in a row where we get a look at the living areas of the supporting cast. In “Return of the Fly” we saw Rocksteady and Bebop’s bedroom in the Technodrome, and now we get to see April’s bedroom for the first time. Burne calls at five in the morning to demand she investigate reports of “some do-gooder" who’s going “on a crime-fighting rampage, violating all sorts of criminal civil liberties”. The Turtles are being blamed for this, and April agrees to take on the story, if only to clear the names of her friends.
The Turtles are actually occupied with the crisis of having no pepperoni in the lair. They decide to hit the town in the hope of securing supplies despite how early it is, and on the way encounter a lurking Casey Jones, who assumes they must be “gangsters on their way to a big heist.”
After some brief back-and-forth, the Turtles attempt to get Casey to back off by removing their comedy novelty disguises (for some reason, they’re not wearing the rubber human masks in this episode). This does nothing to reassure the vigilante, who runs off yelling that “the Martians are coming!”
In the Technodrome, Krang reveals the Scheme of the Day, as he plans to unleash an army of tiny robotic bugs that will override all of the technology in New York. The devices will then be used to build Krang’s new Super Knucklehead, a bigger version of the device Shredder previously deployed in “Enter: The Fly”.
vimeo
Bebop and Rocksteady hitch a ride on the back of a subway train. After briefly stopping to address the viewer in what may be the best fourth wall break of the entire series (“Hey kids! We’re trained professionals! Don’t try this at home!”, followed by a reassuring thumbs up from Bebop), they deploy hundreds of the bugs that begin to infiltrate the city’s machines.
The Turtles track Casey down as he begins wrestling with a homeless man, accusing him of loitering. They pin the masked vigilante to the ground only for him to escape again. Raphael questions the need for the Turtles to be the ones who deal with him. Donatello explains: “Think, Raphael! He pops in and out of the sewers. He fights crime. He knows kung-fu!” In order to clear their own names, the Turtles have to do something about Casey.
April interviews one of the crooks that tried to rob the sporting goods store, who’s still pinned to the wall even though several hours seem to have now passed. He confirms the vigilante was wearing a mask, but can’t say for sure if he was or wasn’t a turtle. As the cops finally drag him away, April doesn’t see one of Krang’s bugs sneak into her news cycle. The bike begins driving on its own, encircling April in what must be the least convincing end-of-act cliff-hanger to appear in the series thus far.
When we return from commercials, Krang and Shredder are watching from the Technodrome as the bike continues to go round and around, leaving April dumbfounded. Just step out of the loop! Raphael actually has to intervene and throw a fucking sai at the camera mounted on the bike before it’s knocked off-course and rolls off down the road.
The Turtles and April watch as cars drive down the road with no-one at the wheel, appliances chase customers out of the stores, and a refrigerator fires ice cubes as it chases a woman down the street. Raph tackles the fridge and it retaliates by opening its doors and hurling all of its contents at him. Some of the things the machines are capable of here make no sense whatsoever, but it could be worse; it’s still nowhere near as farcical as “Camera Bugged”.
Boom boxes and waffle irons attack the Turtles as hordes of men in beige jumpsuits pour out of a factory (presumably this universe’s equivalent of the yellow hard hat + tan shirt guys in the G1 Transformers cartoon). Meanwhile, Krang and Shredder begin construction of the Super Knucklehead.
The Turtles find themselves overwhelmed and surrounded by a parade of rogue drinks machines and fridges. Things look bleak until Casey Jones intervenes, pummelling the appliances with his bats. Donatello spots one of the bugs, which after being handled speeds back to Krang’s location. The Turtles and Casey follow it in the Turtle Van, with Donnie providing directions from the in-built tracker as Raph drives. The route sends the van crashing into a river as we reach the second commercial break.
When we return, the van is still bobbing around in the water. Raphael chews Donatello out for providing bad directions, but couldn’t he have just said “Donatello, I can’t drive the van into a river”? This is like April and the bike all over again.
Donatello determines that one of the bugs made it into the van’s tracker and was messing up his directions. It slips off, swimming out of the van and back to Krang. With that option lost, the Turtles use a portable tracker to locate the hideout.
Shredder is waiting for the Turtles inside the factory, where he provides a grand reveal for the Super Knucklehead. The Turtles encourage Casey to pursue Shredder and recover the remote control for the bugs, but he charges off in the opposite direction, determined to take on “the big boss man”.
In an office area, Shredder uses the controller to send the bugs into overdrive. We see the Channel 6 crew overwhelmed by runaway machines: a photocopier fires paper at Vernon, Burne is surrounded by typewriters that are going to do... something, and in what I assume is supposed to be a make-up room, a floating hairdryer pursues April. Okay, now we're starting to give “Camera Bugged” a run for its money in terms of absurdity.
As if to acknowledge that yeah, we know this is all a complete farce, we get a new variation on the fourth wall break: April wonders why the Turtles aren’t doing something, and Raphael retorts via split-screen that they’re “doing the best [they] can”.
The Turtles confront Shredder and defeat him by hurling a slice of pie at his face – this is, after all, a David Wise episode. After deactivating the bugs, they head off to face Krang, and even though they have Shredder tied up, they just let him go. Remember this for all the times in the future that the Turtles will bemoan him getting away.
Casey takes on Krang in the Super Knucklehead, but ends up being handcuffed to the side of the giant machine. Leonardo cuts him free, and the pair work to punch a hole in its side, hurling the bug controller into it. The army of bugs run into the Knucklehead, causing it to malfunction and forcing Krang to use an ejector seat. He’s captured by his own android body, and alongside Shredder makes his exit in a transport module.
The Turtles are about to commend Casey for his help when they find he’s already gone. Leonardo suggests that they’ll likely see the vigilante hero down the road. As he heads off into the sunset, Casey seems to agree.
"Casey Jones - Outlaw Hero" is silly, even for a David Wise episode, while never quite becoming outright bad. One of the things that helps it is that it feels like it’s genuinely trying to recapture the spirit of TMNT season one, while still having to adhere to what the show has become two years on. As with “Enter the Rat King” before it, we get the debut of an established character from the Mirage comics.
UPDATE 12/02/2022: I originally speculated that Casey and Rat King being introduced in season three may have been primarily motivated by their inclusion in the Playmates TMNT toy line. It turns out that at least in the case of the former, he was added at the request of Eastman & Laird. Shows what I know!
The debut appearance of Casey Jones in the Mirage comics was in the first and only issue of the “Raphael: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle” micro-series, published all the way back in April 1985. That issue’s story, “Me, Myself, and I”, will be familiar to anyone who’s seen the 1990 live-action TMNT movie, as the bulk of it involves Raphael and Casey chasing each other around New York and fighting before finding common ground. Their rivalry seems to have been flipped on its head for the cartoon: in this episode, Raph frequently notes that he admires Jones’s headstrong attitude. “Outlaw Hero” also borrows from “Me, Myself, and I” in showcasing how Casey’s brutal stance toward even the pettiest of crimes differs from the way the Turtles handle things.
The Turtles and Casey will indeed meet again, not in the next episode but the one after that (“Corporate Raiders from Dimension X”). Presumably someone felt we needed a little breathing room in the middle of all this vigilante justice.
NEXT TIME: You can’t beat a bit of bully in “Mutagen Monster”!

These are the “Red Sky Seasons” and have a very different style of art and storytelling. A touch darker, and a lot more serial than episodic. These 3 seasons largely tell a complete story and finish up the show. I’d recommend watching all of them EXCEPT for these skippable episodes: S9E6 “Split Second” S10 E6 “Mobster from Dimension X” S10E7 “The Day the Earth Disappeared”
Top 10 Personal Favorite Episodes
#10 The Gang’s All Here - To my knowledge this is the only instance in the entire franchise where one of the turtles turns human. It’s not the best episode, but it deserves a spot on this list just for that. I find this one really interesting because up until this point throughout the series Michelangelo has shown hints of maybe wanting a normal human life, and he finally gets his wish in this one…
#9 Invasion of the Punk Frogs - The Shredder takes four mutant frogs and attempts to train them to combat the turtles. He gives them more traditionally violent weapons and “villainous” names (Attila, Napoleon, Genghis, and Rasputin), and tries to use them for his own evil gain. But their true nature is sweet-hearted goodness and they end up befriending the turtles instead. I enjoy the laid back frogs and their earnest nature, and the origin story of “made for evil, but ends up doing good” is a favorite trope of mine. These guys come back from time to time in the ‘87 series, and I think they make a fun addition to the turtles’ list of allies.
#8 Take Me to Your Leader - Leonardo doubts his abilities as leader, prompting each of the other three turtles to try their hand at leading. An interesting concept, executed quite well. Also refreshingly different from how I think other versions would handle it (for one, Raphael doesn’t want to be leader). It’s a nice look into each of the turtles’ motives, strengths, insecurities, and flaws.
#7 Splinter No More - What if Donnie found a retro mutagen and allowed Splinter to become Hamato Yoshi, once again? That’s what this episode explores. It’s one of the first times that the show really explores Splinter’s take on his own mutation and how the turtles think of themselves and their mutation. I like the focus on the relationship between Splinter and the turtles in this one.
#6 Enter the Rat King - Rat King is my favorite secondary villain in this series, and this is his intro episode. He’s not really in most of it, with the episode favoring a slow and creepy build-up to his appearance. I like the tone shift and slight mystery aspect of this one. It’s also yet another good episode that focuses on the turtles’ and Splinter’s relationship, as it is put to the test when the Rat King’s main ability is to control rats…
#5 Dirk Savage: Mutant Hunter - Someone hires a mercenary to start rounding up all mutants whether or not they are good or bad. Leonardo and Michelangelo get captured and are forced to fight their brothers. This one brings up the prejudice the turtles face as mutants, as well as has the always intense “forced-to-fight-on-the-villain’s-side” trope.
#4 Michelangelo Meets Mondo Gecko - Michelangelo starts having dreams of someone else present at their mutation. That someone else turns out to be a gecko mutant who’s being manipulated by a villain. This one showcases Michelangelo’s pure heart and ability to befriend even those who start out as enemies (and also his ability to have premonition dreams?). Cool origin story for Mondo Gecko and his relationship with the turtles, and an excellent Mikey-focused episode.
#3 The Maltese Hamster - After a couple of seasons of the turtles largely sharing the action, this was one of the first episodes that focused on a single turtle. It involves Donatello somewhat playing the role of a gritty detective, but his play-acting turns a bit too real when some mobsters kidnap his brothers and Splinter and he has to get them back by himself. It leans a bit angstier than most of these early episodes and it spurred me to create my first artwork for the show. Also, April pies a mobster in the face and shows off some sharp-shooting abilities, so that’s pretty rad as well!
#2 Night of the Dark Turtle - This one has a lot of stuff going on. The Triceratons are invading, and meanwhile, a device created by Shredder accidentally messes with Donatello’s personality, turning him to a much darker vigilante bent on revenge. Though a little campy considering Donatello’s new get-up is heavily Batman-inspired, it’s one of the first episodes with a much darker edge to it. The tension is also excellent, with the threat of Shredder, the Triceratons, AND a potentially evil Donatello all causing trouble at the same time.
#1 Back to the Egg - Leonardo and Michelangelo get turned back into 5-year-olds and Raphael and Donatello have to play big brothers to the now rambunctious trouble magnets. This contains some of my favorite character dynamics in the show, and is incredibly adorable. I think it does a better job of the concept than an episode with a similar premise “Adventures in Turtle-Sitting”, simply because I think it uses the plot device better and has more fun interactions between the turtles. This one makes the top spot solely because it has my personal favorite character duos in play, those being Raph-Donnie and Leo-Mikey; I always enjoy their team-ups!

Then you're probably Not Ready to see what Casey Jones 1987 would Look Like without his "Plastic Face"
(Disclaimer: He still didn't take his Hockey Mask Off in the 1987 Cartoon, IDW Comics and NECA Toys made the Face for the Outlaw Hero so its still Debatable whether thats what he would've Looked like or Not)
I'm watching '87 TMNT and I was totally unprepared for what Casey Jones would actually be like, holy fucking shit

“Mutagen Monster” was a great treat after two mediocre episodes (”Return of the Fly” and “Casey Jones: Outlaw Hero"). Rocksteady was particularly fun to sketch in this episode; someone knew their stuff there.

Free college tuition for all Riverdale residents?! That’s the plan-after the town drains the wetlands that lie between it and Gotham City and then builds a new campus. The only snag? A certain botany-obsessed super-villain. When Poison Ivy enlists her bestie, Harley, to kidnap both Veronica Lodge, daughter of Riverdale’s most important citizen, and her friend Betty, she’s counting on some assistance-and the mayhem that ensues will probably work as well! DC Comics and Archie are proud to present the adventure of a lifetime for all these best pals. Their hijinks are brought to you by the real-life team-up of Paul Dini (HARLEY QUINN) and Marc Andreyko (WONDER WOMAN ’77), with art by Laura Braga (DC BOMBSHELLS)!

Sean Murphy (A/CA) Sean Murphy
In a world where Batman has gone too far, The Joker must save Gotham City. He’s been called a maniac, a killer and the “Clown Prince of Crime” but “white knight”? Never. Until now… Set in a world where the Joker is cured of his insanity and homicidal tendencies, The Joker, now known as “Jack,” sets about trying to right his wrongs. First he plans to reconcile with Harley Quinn, and then he’ll try to save the city from the one person who he thinks is truly Gotham City’s greatest villain: Batman! Superstar writer and artist Sean Murphy (PUNK ROCK JESUS, THE WAKE) presents a seven-issue miniseries of a twisted Gotham City with a massive cast of heroes and villains that, at its heart, is a tragic story of a hero and a villain: Batman and The Joker. But which is the hero-and which the villain?
