The City That Never Sleeps

A city of endless possibilities, high energy, and great diversity, New York City had always been one of my top ten destinations to travel to and I knew I would love NYC before I even visited it (thanks to all the TV shows set in NYC). There is so much to see in New York City! Its bustling streets are a whirlwind of activity, and there are world-famous sites around every corner. From the iconic landmarks like the Brooklyn Bridge to the Statue of Liberty and the fascinating museums. 

For this leg of my adventures I explored the city that never sleeps for a few days and while on my visit to one of the top fashion capitals in the world I knew that my wardrobe needed to be on point for whatever activity.

As always, I wanted to update you all on my NYC fashion style and give you guys some style tips for your next trip to the Big 🍎

TIP You want to blend in with the stylish locals, but stand out when it matters and that means packing the perfect mix of trendy and effortless pieces.

Day 1.

The first thing I decided to do while in NYC was to explore Central Park and visit the Central Park zoo, all while grabbing some lunch and coffee! (because jet lag is REAL!).

Day 2

For my second day in New York I decided to do some shopping and check out the night life in Times Square. Dinner and a Broadway show after a day of shopping were the perfect way to end the night in NYC.

New York has some of the best museums, art galleries, historic monuments, and diverse neighborhoods that it makes it a great place for your next travel destination. the city of NYC is such a special place and I had the best time on my short stay that I will definitively be back again. 

For now, my wanderlust has taken me to a new spot around the world. Somewhere warm for the summer. Here’s a hint as to where I’ll be for the next few days: I’ll be staying at the beautiful Villa Casa Casuarina Hotel during my stay at this tropical location.

Relaxing and Inviting Summer Bedrooms

It’s been years since I’ve shown you our master bedroom, so I jumped at the chance to join Marty from A Stroll Thru Life for her summer bedroom home tour. Throughout the week, we’re sharing 17 beautiful and inviting bedrooms decorated for summer. Summer Bedroom Ideas

Today I wanted to share some easy ideas to update your bedroom for summer. Lightening things up – both literally and figuratively – helps to create a relaxing and comfortable summer bedroom retreat. The best part is, it doesn’t require a lot of time or energy and the tips can be easily applied in any space.

Start with the bedding.

The biggest change to our bedroom for the summer months is changing up the bedding. Our bedroom can get quite hot {and we don’t have air conditioning!} so we really need to keep our covers light. Look for lighter-weight materials and those made with natural fibers like cotton or linen to help keep you cool.

To make things even easier, I typically skip the top sheet and just use a fitted sheet. I also swap out our down comforter for a simple, light quilt. Even though I like to keep things simple, I still love my throw pillows! Currenty, I stack our actual pillows that we use for sleeping in the back, followed by two Euro pillows, two shams that coordinate with the quilt and 1 decorative pillow to add a little more color. The Euro pillows work perfectly to prop your self up in bed for a night of Netflix!

Once you’ve chosen bedding that you like, it’s easy to pull or coordinate colors for the rest of the room.

Declutter

Summer is all about lightening things up, so take a little time to declutter your nightstands, drawers, clothing, or any other area that is heavy with clutter. I have a small desk space in our bedroom that I use for blogging {and now all of our Zoom meetings!} and gave it a quick decluttering. I tend to keep this area pretty tidy anyways, but there are always papers and a few little odds and ends that tend to accumulate here.

I also switched out a few items from the hooks behind our door. This is where I store my gym bag along with a couple of light jackets and scarves for easy grab and go. It’s the perfect place for a little extra storage since you can’t even see it when the door is open {which it usually is unless we’re sleeping}.

Diffuse some summer scents.

Scents are strongly tied to our emotions and memories, so a nice, light scent can help to create a relaxing space and a peaceful sleep. I prefer citrus scents like grapefruit, lemon, lime or orange but you could also use lavender, sandalwood, pine – whatever you’re drawn to! Plus, there are so many pretty diffuser designs to choose from there days.

Use fashion pieces for decor.

Take some of your favorite summer fashion pieces – hats, scarves, purses, bags, etc. – and use them for decor. Hang a hat at the end of the bed, use a textured beach bag for functional book storage, or hang a pretty scarf for a pop of color.

Not only does it look pretty, but it also makes it easy to grab the items when you want to use them.

Add some flowers.

Flowers always add life to a space and there are so many beautiful options for the summer!  If the weather is hot, remember to change the water in your flowers every 1-2 days. It can get sucked up quickly! I always follow these tips to make my cut flower last longer.

One of my favorite things to do with a bouquet of fresh flowers is to make up mini bouquets to display throughout the house. I bought these white lillies and alstroemeria from our local grocery store and made 3 mini bouquets with it plus the larger, main display

Get ready for some summer reading.

Summer is a great time to go through old books and magazines. Donate books that you no longer want and put out books or magazines that you’d like to read. There’s nothing better than a little sunshine and some light summer reading!

Tuesday 7th January 2029

We packed our bags and left them under the stairs at Suites Floresta. We “borrowed” one of the keys to the gate so we could return around 6pm to collect our bags. To finish our stay in Oaxaca we were off to the Ethnobotanical Gardens.

We got there at about 10.30 for the 11am English speaking tour and in typical Mexican fashion a clipboard was passed down the line for you to sign up. Once the correct time arrived the man in charge called about 4 or 5 group leaders in to purchase tickets.

While waiting I got chatting to a woman called Ruth from New York. She must have been well in her 80s and full of curiosity about us and the world. She was a volunteer at the MOMA in New York.

We were all in the first grouping and our guide was Christine, a woman in her 70s originally from America. The garden was not that old with the first plants established in 1998. Previously the area had been a Dominican monastery and then a military grounds. Some of the taller more mature trees had been transplanted. The first garden area we reached contained beans, corn and squash. The cornerstone of indigenous edible foods. We also saw the Rosrita de cacao tree which was used in the production of Tejate.

Oaxaca it should be noted had the most diverse plant species in a country of diverse plants species. Of the 60 varieties of corn around 39 were endemic to Oaxaca. Evidence suggests that at 4000 BC people in the southern Mexican valley of Oaxaca stopped being hunter gatherers and domesticated corn through aggressive interbreeding of a grass variety. Corn literally can’t survive without humans as it can’t self seed and has to be planted, so in that way it is the true plant of civilisation. We also saw Kapok trees used for life jacket stuffing back in the day. The garden was huge and very busy. For a lot of people the whole thing was overkill. 2 hours of in depth plant knowledge when for many a 15 minute time frame to take photos would have sufficed. We were starting to tire when finally we were led back to the incredibly photogenic cactuses. We perfected our content for the ‘gram.

The team was flagging and we stopped at Cafe Nuevo Mundo for lunch. The portions were massive but the food was good and cheap. It set us up for our next virtuous activity, an afternoon at the Museum of Culture housed in the monastery of the Santo Domingo church.

The museum was again a complete mystery with no floor plan or English guide offered. We wandered from room to room until we came across the contents of tomb 7 at Monte Alban. It was found on January 6, 1932, by the Mexican archeologist Dr. Alfonso Caso. When uncovered although the graves had deteriorated, its many treasures and offerings were intact. Kate loved the turquoise skull, Hayley the seashell parrot necklace, I loved the statement piece with gold, turquoise and coral and Tony the chest plate made of gold shaped like jaguars teeth.

With too much brain activity under our belt we headed for drinks at Expendio Tradicion. The drinks turned into a light dinner.

Back to Suites Floresta for the last time we extracted our bags and rolled the 1.2 km in the dark to the ADO Bus station. Where again as if by magic given our lack of Spanish we ended up on the 8pm overnight bus to San Cristóbal de las Casas. 8pm bus, a trip that would take 12 hours. The road was very winding for the first couple of hours. We tried our best to sleep. The seats were actually ok, better than any class of plane I’ve flown lately. We all managed to sleep off and on for the 12 hour journey.

A friend of mine likes to take certain sleep aids when she travels. One time, though, she called me from a terminal while wandering around—her flight had been delayed and she’d had to get off. I stay at the Ludlow in New York because it feels like home now—I’m there once a month. The best perk about being a regular is that most hotels keep a folio on you, noting what you like. This person likes to stay in corner rooms on high floors, for example, or they prefer red to white wine. But what really makes a difference is if the hotel staff doesn’t change over too often. Most of the staff at the Ludlow have been there for as long as I’ve been staying there. It’s a good test of a hotel: Ask the staff how long they’ve worked there. If they’ve been there for a year-plus, that’s a good sign to me.

Treat the airport lounge like a jet-set version of Cheers

And when you’re a regular flyer on a certain route, get to know the people at the airline lounge and put in requests for what you like. Some people don’t go to the airport to go to a lounge, but I like it. When I started going to the Alaska Airlines lounge at JFK—which is a very, very good lounge—they didn’t have Aperol and didn’t know what an Aperol spritz was. So I asked them about it. I follow airside operations on Instagram and check them on the way to the airport, especially during extreme weather, to see what the situation is like that day. It started when I began following an account that’s now been taken down: LAX Air Flight Ops. It was a bunch of guys who worked at the airport updating people with photos of planes taking off, what flights were delayed, stories of what their day was like. At any airport, search the hashtag #airsideops or #ATC to find accounts to follow.

I carry a jade face roller, which is an in-flight routine habit that I’ve picked up from my sister who is very, very into beauty. A lot of women like to travel with facial products, but they’re the hardest things to pack—there are so many of them. On a long-haul flight, I use it both in the middle of the flight and upon landing.

Sidestep the tourists on the Amalfi Coast

There’s no place like the Amalfi Coast. Praiano is my favorite—it’s a little town between Amalfi and Positano and is very low-key. If you’re in Praiano, you’re shielded from the high traffic of tourism. I love the Hotel Grand Tritone, which has been there for 50 years. It’s reasonably priced, too; my room was $350, I think. A lot of those hotels [on the Amalfi Coast] don’t have beach clubs attached to them, but this is one of the few properties that has a private beach and a whole lounge area on the rocks attached to it. I went to Ischia [for the first time] this past August—it’s where they filmed The Talented Mr. Ripley, and I’ve heard it called the “new Capri.” It feels very classic, relaxed, and Italian. It’s a volcanic island, so our hotel had a collection of thermal baths. We swam in the Med, drank local wine, and ate rabbit, which Ischia is known for.

Bring two pairs of headphones on every trip…

I always bring a pair of old-school, wired headphones on every trip—the ones that actually plug into your iPhone. I have nightmares about losing one of my AirPods on a trip or a long-haul flight, and then what do you do? You just have one AirPod.

… and always pack this in any carry-on

If I’ve had to check a bag, I always put an extra outfit in my carry-on. I learned that on my last Virgin Atlantic flight to London. We hadn’t even taken off and an aggressive amount of tequila had been dropped into my lap. I didn’t enjoy spending 10 hours smelling like a bottle of silver Patrón. The flight attendants felt bad for me, because even though I was in Premium Economy, they let me sit at the real bar on board and drink martinis, James Bond-style.

You can still visit Tulum without splurging

The first place I went without parents was Tulum, Mexico, which now is obviously a very tourist-y, fashionable destination. When we went then, it wasn’t expensive; maybe the nicest hotel on the beach was $80. That same location? It’s now $900 or so. It’s wild what happened to Tulum, but I still go back, because I love Tulum very much. If you want to go, stay at Casa Pueblo. It’s a very mellow, underground kind of a hotel where lots of locals hang out. Or there’s a hotel called Amansala, which is on the first stretch of the beach and where the rooms are still reasonably priced. I love them. And go at Christmas, when Tulum is kinda empty. It will be crazy over New Year’s.

Oaxaca is bursting at the seams with traditional textiles. The city is a textile lover’s dream; a cornucopia of authentic ethnic fashion, rich with indigenous culture and artisanal wares. This is the best place in Mexico to shop for traditional costumes, blusa, huipils and don’t get me started on the jewellery.

However, shopping here can feel overwhelming due to the sheer volume of variety. It will take you a couple of solid days of shopping to get a feel for which shops have the best stock. Which is exactly what I did. Here is my top selection of best shops for buying traditional textiles and fashion in Oaxaca City, scroll down to the bottom of the post to get the free google map of all the places listed.

Number 1 Huizache

This is possibly my favourite shop in Oaxaca. I bought some beautiful garments from here that were great quality, fairly priced and which had the artisan’s name and village written on each price tag, which I thought was a lovely touch. The shop is spread over two floors, with a whole area dedicated to fashion. The staff were super helpful, friendly and knowledgable (some spoke in English). They also have a large selection of very cool contemporary litho cut t-shirt designs by local artisans. Plus hammocks, baskets, bags and rugs. This store has it all and you can spend hours fingering different fabrics and agonising over what can be squeezed into your suitcase. And to top it all, it’s fair trade.

Number 2 Mercado De Artesanias

This official artisan market is located at the south end of town. Walking downtown you can feel the atmosphere shift from postcard picture tourist haven to real-street life Oaxaca, as you mingle in with the locals. The experience is all about getting into the thick of it. The market itself is actually very quiet in comparison to the hectic Mercado Benito Juarez which also sells traditional dresses a few blocks away. Mercado de Artesanias has over 84 stalls predominately devoted to textiles from Mexico and other parts of the Americas. Expect to find plenty of costumes, huipils, cushions, trinkets, table clothes and bags. My favourite stall by far is number Y14; the owner Maria specialises in otomi embroideries and tapestries and sells the most beautiful bags made from Guatemalan fabrics and leather. Warning: I lost sleep deliberating over which was the best one to take home with me.

Number 3 Joyas de Oaxaca

On your way to the Mercado de Artesanias be sure to stop off at Joyas de Oaxaca on Calle de JP Garcia. A small but overflowing shop that at a glance looks like any of the others that line the street on the approach to the market. But the owner here is a passionate textiles connoisseur herself; and dresses like one too which is always a good sign you’re in the right place. Dig a little deeper into the racks and rails and you can find stunning textiles from Chiapas in Mexico and lovely pieces from Guatemala. Note that the name on the front of the shop does not match the name of the business.

Number 4 Mujeres Artisians

The regional Association of Craftswomen of Oaxaca is a co-operative solely run by women. All the women represented in the shop are involved in every stage of production; from purchasing the raw materials, making the garments, to running the retail outlet. The purpose behind the co-operative is to ensure the authenticity of traditionally made textiles and to maintain artistic processes. The store sells a wide variety of cheap fun products like tin flaming heart earrings. It also stocks high-end goods such as $500 naturally dyed artisanal masterpieces, which you can find casually stacked near the cash desk.

Number 5 Tutü Handbags

An adorable and colourful little fashion boutique that customises clothes and accessories for people wanting a contemporary and more youthful twist on ‘traditional’ textiles and fashion. They have amazing shirts and skirts made from vintage scarfs and a fun collection of textile sneakers, as well as cute coffee cups and mobile phone cases featuring traditional designs.

Number 6 Etno Diseno

Mariana Grapain’s studio-come shop is worth a visit for the photo opportunities alone. A stunning store, filled antiques, old photos and illustrations as well as Mariana’s personal collection of garments from the 1930s, 40s and 50s. Many of the items in the shop are not for sale, but Mariana, a young woman from Tehuantepec, can custom make designs for you using fabrics from all over the world. There is also an in-store embroidery, if you’d like designs added to any of your clothes or just want to see the process. I recommend booking ahead for an appointment.

Number 7 Casa de las Artesanias de Oaxaca

This well-established shop houses an impressive collection of all types of textiles, arts and crafts from around Mexico. It is worth checking out, although I personally didn’t find it to be as good as Huizache. It is easily recognisable due to the huge fiesta mujer effigy that welcomes you in from the entrance. I couldn’t find anyone working in the shop who spoke English, which I found surprising due to its central location and size.

Number 8 Tapetes De Teotitlan

You can’t miss this carpet cover store on the corner of the street opposite Templo De Santo Domingo, as it attracts interior, colour and textile-holics like bees to honey. All the rugs are made by Reynaldo Rigoberto Martinez and his extended family from the weaving village of Toetitlan. A small hand woven place mat for your dining table will cost 250 peso, a medium sized rug like the purple and pink one in the photo is around 4000 peso and a huge one will set you back around 15,000-20,000 pesos. Many of the rugs are made with natural dyes found in Oaxaca.

Number 9 Los Baules De Juana Cata

More sophisticated than most, the store is carefully managed and piles of fabrics and garments from each region in Mexico are meticulously folded onto towering shelves, creating stacks of rainbow colours that you’ll want to delve into. Here you can find pieces made from natural dyes from the coast of Oaxaca. Prices vary but this shop seems to be for the more serious collector. Note that the shop is located inside a courtyard and has no signage on the outside of the building on the main street. The entrance is through a jewellery shop.

Number 10 Museo Textil de Oaxaca 

The textile museum is a lovely space in which to wile away an afternoon and give yourself a break from shopping. The exhibitions are in Spanish, so unless you speak the lingo it’s not the most informative experience. But it still helps to put all you’re seeing (and buying) in perspective and gives a lovely sense of the heritage of Oaxaca; the building itself is beautiful. There is, of course, a well-stocked gift shop as well. Entrance to the museum is donation based.

There are also many street markets and street sellers as well. Unless you see someone at that stall physically making the products they are selling them don’t assume you are buying from the artisan.
