Kayak trip part 3: the route
This trip was a 6 day/5 night course launching from Lund and going counter clockwise around West Redonda and Cortes. On the map I used different colours for different days.
Day 1: Lund to Refuge Cove. My arms were absolutely killing as I got used to the paddling technique, and I was exhausted by end of day. The weather was misty and windy which made the trip seem incredibly daunting.
Day 2: Refuge Cove to Walsh Cove. This day was sunny and my strength was back, and the site was beautiful. Camping on tiny islands and storing food in the boats meant wildlife was near-zero concern. It was a good day to go for a cold dip.
Day 3: Walsh Cove to Rendezvous Island South. This was the worst day for everyone else. The weather was downpour and the water was rough. But, we got to pass Toba Inlet which was amazing. On this trip was me and my partner, and our guide (a dear friend of ours) and his girlfriend.
Day 4: Rendezvous Island South to Carrington Bay. This was a short, sunny day with the wind on our backs. We even got to sail a bit with a tarp. The lagoon we stayed at is near the rave site on Cortes. This was the best beach for a dip. This is also where our guides girlfriend drunkenly told me about her affair and bullied my boyfriend.
Day 5: Carrington Bay to the Twin Islands. This was a 27km paddle in the heat. When there's no wind it feels like paddling in molasses. We passed Whaletown and Plunger Passage and saw a humpback in the distance. We got cell service again in this area, and timed the tide right to stop at Sharkspit for lunch. The most welcome part of this day was going around Smelt Bay Provincial Park and using a toilet and sink.
Day 6: Twin Islands back to Lund. The last day was bittersweet. We stopped at North Copeland for lunch, same as we did the first day, except this time I was much more confident steering and getting out on my own. We used double kayaks so we had twice the power, but we lagged behind our guide and his girlfriend since his paddling was way more efficient than ours. It's always a bummer to end a trip, but nice to get away from the girlfriend.
We spent a few days in Powell River afterward to see the salmon run and to shop at Ikea in Vancouver before heading home

DS9 3x17 Visionary thoughts (I'm re-watching, so there may be future spoilers)
This is the one where Miles keeps seeing himself dying? #MilesO'BrienMustSuffer
"Light duty means light." They know O'Brien well XD
It's always surprising but nice when you hear an alien talk in an alien language.
This looked like the guards releasing the Romulans only when Sisko turned up - are visitors usually kept in their ships until the command team arrive? Haven't noticed that before.
The Romulans' shoulders are hilariously big.
Love how we see the progression of the Darts Board from cargo bay last episode to bar this one. Did O'Brien want to get in practice before getting more people involved?
Quark throwing all the darts before Miles can stop him, the Chief's terrified "No!", and them landing on a nonplussed Morn - beautiful.
"My doors are always open to you, Chief." :3
I thought the cloaking device had turned out to be a private loan? Oh, I can't keep up.
"They also want access to our personal logs!" I love Kira's outraged voice
"This is one puppet who doesn't like her strings pulled."We know, Kira. And I love you for it.
"And Major, when you're in with the Romulans, try to be diplomatic." "I'm always diplomatic." ... I'm betting this is not going to end diplomatically XD In next scene, even!
CALLED IT.
"That is the most RIDICULOUS thing I ever heard, and I resent the implication!" Watch out, it's going to get more "ridiculous"
"Has Odo ever shown some kind of physical interest in you, Major?"" That's it. You rip the cloaking device out of the Defiant right now." I love her I love her I lover her. She has no cool with annoying people and it's wonderful.
"If it makes you feel any better I'll beat you at another ten games." I love how now they've introsuced the darts board it's in every episode.
Miles' smirk at himself for saving his life
"You're going to be fine." "No, I'm not. In a few hours I'm going to be dead."
"You think Quark had something to do with this?" Odo's outrage as though he's been personally affronted. "I always investigate Quark!"
"Well, it could've been worse. It could've been me." XD
It's really interesting how Julian acts upon seeing O'Brien. It's almost detached, he barely shows any sign of having been upset while he's spouting medical jargon until he says "before... this happens". And then stares at the body for a few seconds until Miles starts ribbing him about letting him die. His reactions to Bareil dying and being alive again a few episodes ago seemed much more visible, but I can imagine that for the last few hours he's been burying himself in professionalism and refusing to acknowledge his emotions about Miles being dead.
"But then I contacted a friend at Starfleet Intelligence who used to be assigned to the Federation Embassy on the Klingon Homeworld. He put me in contact with a former Klingon operative who's out of favour with the current administration. This former operative sent me a series of reports." This is so similar to Odo's Carrington Award gossip XD
"Sometimes I have to remind you just how good I am." XD Was that what he was doing last episode, too?
"There is no careful way to question a Klingon."
"I, I haven't given up. I won't give up." Oh, Miles <3 It's gonna be okay!
I love how things keep escalating in the future. The universe really seems to want Miles dead today - it's lucky he had the time-travelling accident, really, or he would be dead, right?
He didn't faint this time!
The Miles-swap is so weiiird. This O'Brien will have slightly different memories.... That's odd as anything
Why are shields not always up? Does it just take too much energy or something? It just seems like it would be a good thing to be able to do?
"Why that's remarkable." Julian could hit any number he wanted. Did he try and aim for something else and miss? Was 20 the number he already had in mind, he just delayed his reaction?
"Quark. Dabo." "Dabo?" Miles' chuckle XD
Does everyone have super good memories? Miles remembering Julian's first throw and exactly when a dabo would happen? Bc right now it would make sense for Miles to have an augment background too xD

ABOUT
Born to the influential De Soto family, Isabella was always in the public eye and was no stranger to expectations. However, from an early age, it was clear she was not the child to be molded in the family's image.
She was to be a prima-ballerina, which her parents picked for her- but for Isabella, the goal turned into a hobby she eventually only touched in brief moments.
Isabella often had to be reminded of her "place," the role she was meant to play, and how her actions negatively impacted the family. She was doing her best, constantly watering herself down to be the daughter her parents wanted, but it was never enough. She was never her twin sister or her older brother - the golden De Soto's while she lost herself to their shadows.
Isabella was a secret keeper, her brothers, her twins - even her mothers. The skeletons overflowed from her closet, more than half not her own- but Isabella clung to them, for it was the only way she knew how to keep the people she loved safe.
She kept herself safe by retreating into her made-up worlds, and as she got older, the retreat turned into sneaking out to find the pieces of herself lost out to the world somewhere.
She got better at playing her part, if only because she had carved out a niche for herself in the rest of the world. By the time she was eighteen, she knew the life she wanted was nothing like the one planned for her.
Instead, she put away college plans and took up countless hobbies and interests she could profit from. In between it all, she fell in love. For the first time, Isabella had a name for it- knew it and clung to it- she felt seen, and between her and Clay, they curated a group of like-minded people to call found family. They chased away loneliness and injustices with little stunts that made them feel alive.
Sadly, life and consequences caught up to them. After a night of recklessness, Clay and Isabella are arrested, thus beginning the start of the end.
Isabella didn't know it then or expect how this night would change her entire life or break her heart. However, after things quietly went much better than she had thought, she suspected the De Soto's threw around some weight. She did not expect Clay to fall collateral damage to that and, to this day, has no idea that her parents threatened him with real consequences if he didn't stay away.
Isabella struggled but, through community service, found a love for theatre. Once she was done with it and found it more challenging than she could face staying in the small town, she left for the east coast, where she threw herself into the hopes of making it on Broadway.
She made it- her career blossomed, and so did the problems. She didn't think she'd find parts of her in a place she had never really been, but it was a slow rebuild of her heart. Her passion really takes shape on stage.
It was a dream come true, and after spending years keeping a man at arm's length, Isabella let him in, agreed to marry him, and was on the way to a June wedding.
However, the wheel of fate always spins back, and a series of unfortunate events began to pile up. The first was a brutal incident of obsession when a fan broke into her dressing room, resulting in a struggle that left her with a scar on her knee and PTSD that disrupted her career.
A few weeks later, her twin sister was suspected of missing. Weeks turned to months, she still could not face a stage, and her sister had still not returned. Unable to face her demons in the city, Isabella left a letter to her should-be husband and returned home to Half Moon Bay to throw herself into the search for her sister. Half in desperation and half in need of resolution.
QUICK FACTS
She bakes when she is stressed. There is plenty of muffins and cakes in her house right now.
Isabella has a small crescent-shaped scar on her palm that mirrors one her twin had when they promised to never abandon one another.
While she has not attended a formal college, she collects books on topics she is interested in, such as languages and history.
Isabella loves to sing and often sings to herself throughout the day.
Growing up, Isabella felt very alone and collected a group of like-minded people who lived a secret life where they went on adventure thrill-seeking trips. This turned into minor vigilante shenanigans. They would use their collective skill set to unearth some unsavory people's secrets and other "robin hood" esque stunts.
FAMILY
Mataeo De Soto -father: He is a proud and driven man who has taught Naomi her self-worth. Xavier has never allowed her a second of doubt where her worth where he is concerned. This can sometimes translate into believing he knows best and attempting to control her life passively.
Sofia De Soto - mother: Close despite frequent arguments. Naomi feels unseen by her parents. Especially her mother. They swing from high and low, and when she is particularly down, she often seeks out the comfort of her mother.
Serena De Soto- Twin sister, they were very close growing up, but their lives split in recent years, and there were some issues between them. Since she's gone missing, Naomi has returned home to be with her family. She has begun snooping around the secretive life of her sister.
Alejandro De Soto: Oldest of three and often most responsible of the De Soto siblings. He thinks Naomi is frivolous and vain; she believes he is dull and lacks a sense of adventure. He has struggled with addiction since they were young (Naomi has frequently covered and tried to get him to seek help). Despite this, she still has his back.

Dann Zinn Two Roads
Dann Zinn Two Roads Ridgeway Saxophonist and composer Dann Zinn has long been a fixture in the Bay Area jazz scene. He’s veteran that’s worked with such past greats as Joe Henderson and Freddie Hubbard and with modern day mainstays Terri Lynn Carrington, Mike Stern, Taylor Eigsti, David Weiss, Peter Erskine and more. The lineup on Two Roads shouts ‘powerhouse’ and the album certainly delivers on…

New Post has been published on https://www.packernet.com/blog/2024/09/16/fans-fan-coaches-need-to-play-smart/
Fans fan, Coaches need to play smart
I hated the play calling at the end of first half. As a fan, I’m greedy when things appear to be going well. Thankfully, Matt La Fleur oversaw the game plan and not me or other fans.
Masterpiece
There’s no such thing as a perfect game plan. La Fleur’s plan versus the Colts is as close as it gets. He started a QB with little game experience, after only 3-weeks in Green Bay. The multiple formations, motions, run-fits and myriad ball carriers kept the Colts on their heels for most of the game. When MLF did call for passes, he picked throws he knew Willis could execute. Players play, but the Coach earned this win.
The game wasn’t as close as the final score. If not for a missed field goal and a Josh Jacobs fumble on the goal line, it would have been a blowout. By midway through the 3rd quarter, LaFleur knew the clock was their real opponent. The run game effectiveness wasn’t the same, but they kept running, both the ball and the clock.
Looking back, I see the conservative “run out the clock” at the end of the first half was the less exciting, higher percentage way to get the win. It’s a great reminder that coaches are smarter than fans.
Post game nuggets:
• Carrington Valentine out-snapping Eric Stokes? With no injury, that makes me wonder. • Devonte Wyatt out-snapping T.J. Slayton despite an opponent with a strong run game is curious. • Winning time of possession 2:1, and turnovers, almost always leads to—winning. • Here’s to a game without a missed field goal. I still look forward to that. • Malik Willis played great, but they can’t run 52 times effectively against most teams. • When’s the last time players vomiting made such a storyline post-game? • I expected a deep shot to Watson or Wicks, but it’s good to win with what works.

Ragged Silk Prayers.
JAN 25, 2024 - 8:23pm
“Dear Lord,” he began. “I thought it was you dancing in the coarse hair at my man’s chest. I thought it was you pushed us into each other that day a lifetime ago in quad.”
He stretched his hand to the fine, cool sheets neatly laid on the empty side of the bed. The glistening moonlight made the fabric of the sheets glow which sent him into a deeper spiral. He missed him. He loved him dearly, but he was not sure if he was supposed to be here anymore. There was a time when Morris thought Carrington was the love of his life. Now, he was not as certain.
“So much time has passed, and we just keep meeting. We just don’t learn. I need you, Lord, to tell me once and for all if this man is mine. If he isn’t, can you show me who is?”
Morris waited expectantly. He looked out of the curtainless bay window above his bed as if anticipating a comet hurtling through them. Nothing happened.
Morris scraped his nails across the empty sheets as he pulled his blanket over him. He turned his back to the empty space next to him and slowly drifted off to sleep.

Wednesday’s meeting of presidents Joe Biden and Xi Jinping at Filoli adds even more history to the fascinating and illustrious Bay Area mansion. Although this meeting will certainly have more geopolitical implications, a moment captured in Filoli’s library 42 years ago changed pop culture forever.
...
With his fortune, Bourn built or bought some of the most beautiful homes in California and Ireland: Villa Eden Del Mar on Pebble Beach’s 17-Mile Drive, Bourn Mansion at 2550 Webster St. in San Francisco, Muckross House in Killarney, Ireland, and Filoli in Woodside. The pseudo-Italian name was a mashup of letters from Bourn’s credo: “Fight for a just cause. Love your fellow man. Live a good life.”
After William and wife Agnes’ deaths, the mansion was bought by Lurline Matson Roth, the heiress to the Matson shipping empire. Due to the immense costs of maintaining the estate, the mansion was in decline when Roth gifted it to the National Trust for Historic Preservation in the 1970s. It was restored and opened to the public for tours.
...
But its true star turn came in 1981 when a new soap opera called “Dynasty” shot its three-episode pilot there. The sexy, scandalous lives of the Carrington family unfolded in their Denver mansion, which was actually Filoli. Stars John Forsythe, Linda Evans, Pamela Sue Martin and Al Corley filmed in the home and gardens, including a scene in the Filoli library that would make television history. It was there that son Steven Carrington came out to patriarch Blake Carrington, making Steven the first openly gay lead on a primetime drama.
