FIREBIRD - SUNMI Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Author and illustrator Sunmi created a sweet slice-of-life story about high schooler Caroline Kim coming into her queer identity. I loved the art; it suited the story's tone, conveyed the characters' emotions, and added to the story. 

The cast in the book was my favorite part. Caroline had supportive friends, genuine family relationships, and crush-worthy Kimberley Park-Ocampo. I would read (and enjoy) volume two, picking up after Firebird and discovering what happened with everyone.

Rezumat

Summary: When Caroline was kidnapped by hybrid's Tyler tried to command the pack to listen to him. But we all know, he wasn't the alpha male. Lucky for Caroline and Elena, the real alpha male is willing to save his mate. On that note, we all know an alpha male, needs an alpha female. ;)

Caroline's hands are tied up in shackles. Kimberley presses down on the chains covered in vervain causing Caroline to shout out in pain. "Arghh. Why are you doing this?" She asks.

"To show Tyler who's in charge." The baby hybrid answers.

Kimberley cracks Caroline's wrists and Caroline again screams in pain. Tyler and Elena rush into the barn and towards them.

"Stop! Stop it, Kim." He shouts. "Caroline's with us. All right? We're all on the same team."

"She's on your team, not mine." Kimberley tells him.

Behind Tyler and Elena, the other hybrids enter the barn. The hybrids restrain Elena and Tyler while Kimberley continues to torture a screaming Caroline. Tyler attempts to free himself from the grasp of the two hybrids holding him back.

"Stop it! Stop!" Tyler screams.

Adrian flinches at the sound of the innocent baby vampire's cries of pain. "Ease up, Kim. Klaus won't like this." The hybrid had no idea how true he was.

Kimberley nods, "That's a very good point. Do you think he'll like this?" She picks up a stake and shows it to Tyler and the rest of the hybrids.

"Kim! Don't do it. I swear to God!" Tyler begs. Kimberley lowers the stakes towards Caroline's heart.

"No, wait, wait, wait, wait. If you really want to hit Klaus where it hurts, then torture me instead. He's fixated on keeping me alive. You want real revenge or not?" Elena says frantically.

Klaus comes in. "Well what do we have here?" He asks, his gaze darkening with anger when he sees Caroline's state. His eyes follow the stake pointed at her hand to Kimberly.

Before anyone knows what's happening Klaus has Kimberly pinned to the wall, with the stake she was once holding dropped to the ground. Klaus' hand plunged into her chest, his fingers dipping into her heart.

Kimberley takes a gasp of pain, "I'm...I'm sorry."

Klaus smiled sweetly at her, but his eyes gave away the pain that was about to come as he gave her heart a squeeze. One not mean to kill her, only cause her pain. "Sorry isn't going to cut it. No after what you've done."

"Please. We're your hybrid. If you kill us, you'll be alone forever." Kimberly says, desperately grasping at straws.

Klaus lets out a laugh, "That's hilarious. Do you really think you're my real pack? God no! You're the hybrid's I'd made with the leftovers I had of Elena's blood after I was done helping my true pack transition. They're currently safe at our pack house in Chicago. Getting accustomed to being hybrids and enjoying the benefits come with the transition."

The original then turns to Elena, "Well? What are you standing around for? Untie Caroline." He orders her. Elena jumps a bit at his look. She's snapped out of her daze by his growl and rushes to Caroline's side as fast as she can and unties the blond who begins rubbing her sore and injured wrists.

Klaus catches Caroline's gaze. She knows she should ask Klaus to let Kimberly go. It's the right thing to do. But they didn't do this for their freedom. They were using her to prove a point. She was once again collateral damage, and she was sick of it!

She wanted them to pay.

So instead, Caroline shook her head, "Just don't kill them." she tells Klaus. He gives her a small smile, before turning back to the woman gasping for breath and panicking.

Klaus lets go of Kimberly, and throws her towards the rest of his hybrids. The woman lands next to Tyler with a pained cry. He lets his gaze travel over all of his hybrids, letting them know he was addressing all of them.

"Now this is what's going to happen. You've broken your sire bond. But that doesn't mean you're completely useless to me. So if a minion is still usable, I don't see the point in killing them off. Especially when Elena can only give so much blood. Most of you will get the option of going on the run forever. Where any pack you join, will be slaughtered by me. You will live without your werewolf side ever feeling the bond of a pack again."

Caroline could see the clear look of fear in their faces. Klaus knew exactly what he was doing. He knew what punishment would be the worst for the hybrids.

"Now. The second option, in my opinion. Is far too kind for you. But I know she," He said, nodding towards Caroline, "will find the first to be cruel. Which is the only reason I'm giving you the second. The second option is that you will spend the rest of your lives, however short or long they may be. Serving me and my pack. Caroline as well, without question. Any commands we give you, you will carry out, and without any protest. Of course, to make sure this happens. You will all be under compulsion." Klaus told them.

"Most?" Kimberly asked with a quiver, having a genuine idea of what her fate may be.

Klaus smiled darkly at her. "How smart of you to catch that. Now only if you'd have used your head ten minutes ago before laying a hand on Caroline."

Kimberly turned her fearful gaze towards Caroline, begging silently with her eyes. But the baby vampire just looked the other way. Her injuries had just started to heal.

"You," Klaus said, walking towards Kimberly, "Won't get an option. You will spend the rest of your life protecting Caroline. Even if it means laying down your own life to protect her, you will. You will also treat any of her wishes as commands you must do everything in your power to fulfill. Understood?" Klaus said, compelling her.

Kimberly shuddered. She'd have to spend her life serving a baby vampire! She wanted to be alpha! Not someone's slave. She felt anger and humiliation course through her. Would he still feel the same about the little blond when she reveals that, "Yeah, well she helped unsire us."

"Oh I know." Klaus answered without missing a beat. "I've been around for a millennia. Did you honestly believe I wouldn't know a distraction when I saw one. I just choose to ignore it. Plus, her motives came from her misplaced loyalty to your pathetic lot. Something that we'll hopefully get around to correcting. Well yours were fueled solely by your desire for revenge and green." He finished, his gaze on Tyler.

Klaus then turns his gaze toward Tyler. "Tyler, my first hybrid. You used to be grateful, what happened to that? You went off to search for a way to break the sire bond. So you could be with Caroline. And yet, for some reason, you continue to smell like that werewolf. Hayley I believe." Klaus taunted, looking at Caroline from the corner of his eyes.

He honestly hated the flinch the blond gave, or how a look of hurt flashed through her face. But this wasn't just about Tyler. He needed to open her eyes as well. Klaus had to admit, he was proud of how quickly she covered her hurt and instead glared at Tyler. Causing the cheating hybrid to flinch in turn.

"You should consider yourself lucky that a part of Caroline still cares for you. And that's the only reason I'm letting you live. But I don't want you anywhere near me, and I sure as hell don't want you anywhere near her. So this is what you're going to do." Klaus said, glaring down at the boy. "You're going to run. You will take that sow, Hayley, with you as well. You will continue to run, never staying at a place longer than three days. You will live with the fact that despite how I ruined your life, you will continue to remain nothing more than an insect to me. Unable to do anything, so much as touch me. Understood."

"I understand." Tyler was forced to answer, lowering his head.

Just then, one of the hybrid's shot forward from the group and grabbed Elena. He held a broken piece of wood, with a shard edge up. "L-let us go. Or the doppelganger is dead." He demanded.

Klaus just looked at the man boredly. "What part of, I already have my pack, did you not understand? Even if you do kill her, what do you think will happen next?"

The hybrid looked around, panicked, "I'm not joking!"

Caroline had officially had enough today. She'd been kidnapped, tortured, found out her boyfriend was cheating on her! And now she had to deal with this! "Let Elena go. Now." the baby vampire growled.

The hybrid looked startled, and found his wolf's tail tucked between his legs. He was forced by his inner wolf to drop Elena and lowered and lowered his head.

Kimberly looked up, amazed, as jealousy ran through her veins as she realised that Jake's wolf had recognized the blond as his Alpha female.

Caroline looked on, surprised as she watched the wolf kneel down in front of her, barring his neck in submission. "What just happened."

Klaus smiles at her, "I always knew you were a queen. I guess I shouldn't be surprised to learn that you're an Alpha female as well."

"But I'm a vampire." Caroline says, confused.

"So?" Klaus asks, raising an eyebrow. "That doesn't change anything. Least of all the fact a true Alpha female, will always be an Alpha female."

Come on, let's be honest. I can't be the only one who wanted Klaus to come in at that moment. I originally wasn't going to give Caroline her whole Alpha female moment. But then as I was writing the summary, I realised I have a habit of painting her as kind of weak unintentionally. Which is just wrong, because we all know she's a total boss. So of course, she deserved her boss bitch moment. And that's how that little bit in the end was formed.

Also, a song that fits the ship pretty well, is 10 000 hours by Justin Bieer and Dan + Shay. Remember the whole "I wanna talk about you , your hopes, your dreams" scene. I felt like this song fit it great.

Lots of warm fuzzies between the cast, crew and community, and lots of fun behind-the-scenes anecdotes

Lots of great discussion on the diversity and inclusion in ME: on gender, sexuality, representation, empowerment, the core message in the MET that “we’re all in this together or we’re screwed”, the progress made in the portrayal of female characters in gaming, etc. “Everything behind what went into these characters was authentic, we [the VAs] could tell that so much research, texture, authenticity etc had gone into them. It really made a difference”. JHale: “I’ve spent my career kicking down ceilings [barriers and so on women actors experience] with my steel-toed boot. To get to be a part of this game that has now created the expectation that there now be a female PC, ‘duh’, is once of the great things of my life. BioWare listened and put her on the box. The first time someone dropped the box in front of me I held it over my head and screamed over the crowd, ‘Casey Hudson, thank youuu!!’ It was a divine moment. This game was the moment the boot finally crashed through the glass, pushed by millions of women.”

The panel received many messages from the question submission from fans expressing that MET really helped them through very dark places and periods in their lives. The cast have had a lot of interactions with fans over the years where the fans expressed similar sentiments to them

ME was one of the first games Keythe Farley (Thane) acted for that had branching dialogue/dialogue choices, and when he saw the script with that when he went in, he was like “wow”. ME was the second big game D. C. Douglas (Legion) ever did. In his first audition he didn’t know it was for a robot-type character as it was disguised as something else with a military-feel. The second time it was to do a speech/lament at someone’s funeral and he knew it was for a robot. He said playing Legion for him was a case of “wake up, drink some coffee and go to work”

Jack was really special to her VA Courtenay Taylor because she relates to her so much and had a lot of similar emotional problems and personal troubles in her past. Jack helped her become who she has became. The host added that in his interactions with Courtenay over the years, he realized very quickly that she is very much like Jack

AWR has two moms, something which she hasn’t talked about/expressly said publicly before. Talking about recording lines between Sam and Femshep made her tear up. She said that being raised by two moms in the 80s was tough due to societal attitudes at the time, and so to see a loving relationship between two women depicted in a game was a big deal for her. When recording the white picket fence conversation, she was actually crying (“and then I’m crying because of the lesbians”). It was a huge moment for her to represent her moms’ journey. When she went home she told them all about how her character is gay and wants a white picket fence and everything “just like we had”.

When PW was working on Sam’s arc, one of the things they did was show it to one of their colleagues, who is a lesbian, asking what things she’d like to see in an arc like that and what things she felt were missing from it. The white picket fence conversation came from the colleague’s feedback (“we wanna see the nice, healthy, happy domestic stuff”, as it’s often missing in portrayals of wlw relationships)

As the VAs got more into their characters, they sometimes had feedback and input to the process to offer, like “I don’t think she’d say [this] like [that]”. Sometimes they knew their characters even better than the crew did sometimes. JHale waxed lyrical about Caroline Livingstone’s awesome direction, with the host adding that he has interviewed a lot of the VAs over the years and they all talk about Caroline like she’s Gandalf the White coming to the rescue in LotR. AWR expressed that Caroline is really funny (“don’t worry it’s not you, PW was sick when they wrote this line that’s why”) and emotionally in-tune with them and this makes long hard sessions with her a joy

When Mark went into record for the Citadel DLC one day he asked Caroline “wouldn’t be great if Shepard’s clone had been made to be the opposite gender? Then the two Shepards could fight each other!”

William Salyers (Mordin) likes the way Mordin’s story ended and felt that it was wonderful to be able to play that. He feels like the luckiest person because as he wasn’t the original VA of Mordin, he got to come in late to something that was amazing. “Caroline helped me get to where I needed to be emotionally to play that final scene. It was one of the most moving things I’ve ever gotten to do personally for a piece of interactive art”. PW related that with Mordin’s writing, they didn’t realize how much they were asking for. They thought William was amazing doing all the science-speak/technobabble, as they themselves didn’t know what it meant, and then suddenly having to deliver emotional heartbreaking lines. William’s always been a secret science nerd and so he loved that fact about Mordin. “It was a real treat to say your words”

Karin: “I always claim credit for the Scientist Salarian song even though I had nothing to do with it. I opened that door for PW”

Steve Blum (Grunt) found it a real treat playing Grunt as Grunt is a tough soldier on the outside but a [babey] on the inside, while he is more the other way around (softer on the outside, fight-y inside). He isn’t a gamer and so didn’t know what to expect or what he was getting into. There was the big pile of words, they showed him the picture of Grunt, and he just ran with it. “Grunt was kind of a perfect character for me in that respect”. Side note: his wry comments throughout the panel were hilarious

The women Courtenay met working on this game are her friends for life. Ali Hillis (Liara) gave her her number the night of the ME3 drop and was like “let’s hang out!!” “JHale is the shit. I go to England and there’s AWR and I have this friend for life”.

“We’re a family”. The host comments that you don’t see this kind of closeness between the people on a lot of projects

Kimberley Brooks (Ashley) thinks things have and are changing for the better in terms of roles for women, and roles for brown and black women. This year she has noticed increasing awareness of inclusion and of where it’s lacking. “The copies I’m being sent for auditions, it’s drastically changing, I’m seeing it change before my eyes. It’s really exciting, there’s more and more roles for me.” “Ash is such a strong character and I felt very badass playing her, it was life-changing”. She’s excited that the remaster is going to be a new way to see these characters that they’ve been so lucky to voice. Kimberley/Ash was the first female character Karin saw in the studio, when she saw her she was like “Wow, she’s so kickass and inspiring”. At this point Karin hadn’t been working at BioWare for all that long, and she wanted to thank Kimberley, because she saw her and heard her voice and had a personal ‘this changes everything’ moment

Raphael Sbarge (Kaidan) finds it very moving how many women were encouraged into gaming due to ME

Raphael: “Everyone here has awesome varied careers, but because ME was so collaborative [and so on], [it was something really rare and special]. Nothing else I’ve done has been so important or impassioned, it has almost a religious experience to it, which you can see from tears in fans’ eyes and tattoos and people talking about it 10 years later”. “I’m so grateful for it.” “Clearly we’re going to do this again next year! :D” D. C. added that it’s going to follow him for the rest of his career. Courtenay says it has catapulted her career

PW talked about how it’s great that the female chars in ME were allowed to have real, realistic flaws and dark periods (as opposed to nonsense stuff like ‘her flaw is that she’s clumsy’)

Having the male and female PC be voiced was a big, expensive commitment for the studio. Karin commented that at the time, it was a risk that the pretty-much almost entirely-male leadership of BioWare at the time decided was important to take, and so she was happy that these were the values her colleagues had

PW was “the junior baby writer on ME1. I’d just gotten to the studio and Mac Walters fell down a flight of stairs and hurt his back, and they pulled me in while he was healing”. Karin: “Mac was very understanding when PW fell on the ice and hurt themselves during ME2.” PW: “My job in ME1 was to come up with conversations between followers to pass the time in the elevator loading times. I was throwing stuff at the wall to see what would stick”

Steve turning his volume down before he shouts classic Grunt quotes down the mic

Caroline: “Do you know how many tears were shed in the booth? How many times have we all cried in the booth...” JHale: “We were recording the end of ME3, which I never call the end, because I’m always like I’M HERE! [wink] The goodbye Garrus lines” - these lines got right under her skin and when she went to say her lines she couldn’t speak because she’d burst into tears. “It was all I could do to say those words... and then there was silence... [and Caroline had gotten choked up too].” This was one of the last sessions they did. PW: “John Dombrow wrote Garrus in ME3 and I’m gonna tell him that he got you both to break.”

Caroline was also really teary during Keith David’s (Anderson)’s performance where he tells Shepard she’s like his daughter. This moment was one of JHale’s favorites to act

BioWare came up with a proprietary VA recording system which JHale describes as a secret sauce as-yet not widely-used in the industry

Lots of fun in the line-reading portion at the end. The lines/scenes were sent in by fans. This starts around timestamp 1 hour 50 mins. There’s a break where they discuss more anecdotes after a bit then some line-reading resumes at 1 hour 59 mins 18 secs

One of PW’s fondest memories is of ME3 when JHale and Mark got to play off each other (which they naturally didn’t get to do very much), when PW had shoved the entire script of the Blasto movie into random ambience throughout the Citadel. They knew Mark was going to be Blasto as he voiced most of the hanar. PW: “We had to have Blasto’s elcor partner’s hot sister... And I was like could it be JHale?? Because they hardly ever get to talk to each other. It was one of my proudest moments”. Mark: “Not only that, we had a romance.” JHale: “Yeah, it was hot”.

“Think of the poor cold freezing Edmontonian hanar”

PW’s story about Sam’s toothbrush: They wrote it as a throwaway line but AWR did it so well that PW wanted to bring it back in the Citadel DLC, as that DLC was the action-comedy one. So they decided the toothbrush was going to save the Normandy. The art director at the time was in an early playthrough of the scene and in that version of the scene Sam held up her empty hand. The director was like “We gotta make the toothbrush? Really? It’s gonna be thousands of dollars to render the toothbrush.” It then got to the next few lines and the director deadpanned at PW “Okay that’s pretty good, we’ll make the toothbrush.” PW: “Good, I got my toothbrush.”

It was John’s idea that we find out that Mordin had been working on a crime noir novel. There was a period in the development of the Citadel DLC where PW was feeling like “Mordin’s gone, he had his big moment, I want to respect and honor that” and the entire team were like “I think Mordin needs a couple more songs dude”. “Well alright!” By that point William had shown them he could deliver literally any line

“Oh I need a shower that was so steamy hot”

PW got in trouble with Localization over Jack’s “Save some of your energy, we’re gonna do it on the pool table” exchange. Localization were like “Um could you explain what Jack means by this??” These lines were PW’s, Karin as an editor got the question about it and passed it on to PW like “nope this is your fault”. “The best part is it was France that needed PW to explain the joke while apparently Germany were like ‘Yes please confirm that this is regarding the possibility of oral sex-’”

Keythe on voicing Thane: “Thane was a real lesson in opening up to the character, allowing this beautifully conflicted character to exist. Each character in the MET has conflicts within themselves and a tragic flaw that is revealed through the course of conflict.” He also waxed lyrical about how the MET was akin to Star Wars and Citizen Kane, and about the interconnectedness and representation in it

D. C.: “I have a question for you guys. Was it a conscious decision to not have Legion as a romance? Because there are a lot of upset people out there!!” “Voltage problems.” “A lot of creative reuses of ‘There was a hole.’” PW: “It was a process of us figuring out what we wanted to do. If we had known... The number of people who were like ‘I don’t know, are people gonna wanna romance Garrus? Liara? She’s blue and has no hair. Are people gonna be okay with that?” Karin: “We were young and naïve, now we know BioWare fans are thirsty.”

Derek brought in the first picture of Thane to show Caroline and she was like “He’s really hot, that’s gonna be a killer character. People are gonna want to romance that gentleman”

Raphael asked the BioWare team if there’s ever been a point where they thought about doing more DLC content or some kind of revival. “Has that ever come up?” “We’re legally obligated not to say, sorry, we’re going through a tunnel right now, bad reception!!”

D. C.: “Does this country have a soul?” “It does.”

Hi! I'm not sure if you are still doing requests for your writing challenge but I would love Klaroline with forehead kiss, if possible please. Maybe it was just after a big battle or defeating an enemy or something? I just love the idea of Klaus kissing Caroline's forehead as a way of saying "you're safe, I love you and I've got you". Anyway! If this sparks your interest at all that would be amazing. But totally no worries if not / if too busy

Takes place in 

Takes place during 4x08 TVD-We’ll always have bourbon street. 

Blood was everywhere. The barn was coated in it from head to toe. Dead hybrids lingered on the ground, Tyler being one of them; although Caroline was not sure if what she was seeing was real. Caroline’s aching body was still chained to the stall. The burning sensation of the werewolf venom piercing through her veins. Her vision clouded as the hallucinations were soon to be taking place. She had been here before. Tortured because Tyler’s loyalties were in questions; and Caroline always seemed to be the one who got in the middle.

The female hybrid whose name Caroline could not remember, bit her in order to anger both Tyler and Klaus. She groaned in frustration, pulling at the chains on her wrists. Tyler did nothing, sure he begged and pleaded to let her go. He tried to force the hybrid to submit to him but instead, she did the exact opposite; flashing to Caroline and sinking her teeth into her shoulder; proving to the hybrids that she was the alpha of the pack.

The pain set in and Caroline’s mind was hazy after that. She remembered the screaming and the scent of blood filling the air. Tyler’s body dropped at her feet and in that moment, Caroline felt nothing for him. Elena’s face came into view and she pulled at the chains binding Caroline’s wrists. She wasn’t able to pull them away and the doppelgänger turned to yell over her shoulder.

“Klaus! I can’t get them off!” Caroline’s brow creased. Klaus? Why was he there? Why was Elena with him? All the questions that were flowing in Caroline’s mind stopped once the scent of blood grew stronger and stronger. Hazily, she saw Klaus kneel before her; covered head to toe in blood. She could see the blood spatter across his skin and how it seeped into the fabric of his Henley. “Klaus, they bit her. Please.”

“Hello, Sweetheart. It seems you found yourself in a spot of trouble.” He whispered, ignoring Elena’s plea. He reached up and pulled the chains easily from the wall. They clattered on the ground with a loud thud and Klaus pulled Caroline into his arms. She went easily, whimpering in pain. Klaus kissed the top of her forehead and then bit into his wrists; bring it to her lips. Caroline latched on greedily. As she drank, Caroline could feel his lips on the top of her head; the kisses surprisingly brought Caroline comfort. “You’re safe love. I got you.”

The searing pain of the werewolf venom ceased but her body still felt exhausted. Her eyes fluttered shut and she pressed her face into his neck; allowing him to lift her up from the ground. She could briefly hear both Klaus’s and Elena’s voices as her mind slowly drifted into oblivion.

Caroline woke in her bed several hours later; the sunlight drifting into her bedroom and the sound of birds chirping outside. Caroline stretched and sat up; memories of the night before hitting her. Elena confessing the fact that she slept with Damon, their fight, being kidnapped by angry hybrids, Tyler standing by while one tortured and bit her, the venom searing through her veins and the slaughter of those said hybrids.

And Klaus.

“You’re awake.” Caroline looked towards her bedroom door and saw Elena standing there. She was dressed in pajamas, telling Caroline that her friend has slept there. Elena crossed the room and sat on the bed beside her friend. “How are you feeling?”

“I’m fine.” Caroline replied, the memory of Tyler’s dead eyes staring at her as he collapsed on the ground; the heart that Caroline had thought belonged to her lay on the ground. She knew she should feel sad that he was dead, but she also remembered how he stood by and just let that hybrid torture her. “What happened?”

“Tyler made the hybrids angry.” Elena whispered; her eyes downcast. “They grabbed you in order to get back at him. I ran to get Tyler, hoping that he would be able to find and save you. He found you and tried to get the one hybrid, Kimberley I think her name was, to submit to him as the alpha of the pack but she wouldn’t. She bit you instead.”

“I remember Klaus. He killed them all.” Caroline remembered the taste of his blood, the sight of him covered in the hybrid’s blood and the feel of his lips on her forehead. Elena nodded. “I don’t understand, how did he get there.”

“I called him.” Caroline’s eyes widened, shocked that Elena of all people would do such a thing. “I realized that Tyler wasn’t going to save you and there was no way that those hybrids were going to allow me to help you. I flashed out of there as soon and as far as I could. Damon and Stefan were in New Orleans, so I called Klaus, begging him to help you. I told him everything. He came and tore them apart.”

“He knows that Tyler was unsiring them?” Elena nodded in confirmation. Caroline stood from the bed and began to pace the room. It would make sense for Klaus to kill them if they were going to rebel; but why would he save her? That part made no sense to her. “Why did he save me? Why did he not just let us die because I knew what Tyler was doing.”

“Caroline, you know why.” Elena replied, and Caroline shook her head. “He loves you.” Elena’s words caused Caroline to pause. Her eyes went wide and her jaw was slacked. “Caroline, I hate Klaus. The moment he came to town, he ruined everything. He killed Jenna and just was a monster. But, I can’t deny that he has a soft spot for you. Kind of like how I have one for Damon.”

“Elena….” Elena held up her hand.

“You said a lot of things last night about Damon and you’re right. I don’t want to fight about Damon or the sire bond or whatever is going on. I’m just glad you’re okay.” Elena stood and hugged Caroline tightly, whose mind was reeling. “No matter what happens Caroline, you’re one of my best friends and I don’t want to lose that.”

Elena left after ensuring that Caroline was okay. Caroline knew not what to do but her mind would not cease until she got answers. Shit was going to hit the fan once the town realized that dozens of bodies were going to be discovered on the outskirts of town in some random abandon barn; the Mayor’s son among the victims. Caroline dressed quickly, grabbed her keys and stormed out of her house. She drove to the Mikaelson manor, unsure of what she would fine. By the time she reached their front door, Klaus already had it open and was gazing at her.

“Good morning, Caroline. You’re looking better.” Klaus’s tone was smooth and gentle, supplying not a single hint that he massacred his own hybrids the night before. He was clean and showered, not a speck of blood was on him and he appeared as innocence as she was; although if Caroline was honest with herself; that was not very innocent at all.

“You killed them. All of them.”

“Yes.”

“Even Tyler?” She whispered and Klaus sighed. He stepped aside, allowing Caroline to enter the manor. She stepped into the grand foyer, gazing at the large staircase that impressed her the night of the Mikaelson ball. She could sense the tension rolling off of him, but she knew that he posed not threat to her. “Why?”

“Isn’t obvious?” Klaus gazed at her bashfully, as though he was a small child who was caught stealing from the cookie jar. “They betrayed me. They were conspiring against me and broke their sire bond.”

“They just wanted freedom Klaus. If you would have given them that, this whole mess could have been avoided.” Klaus flashed in front of her, but Caroline did not flinch. She could see that her words hurt him, but he was not going to lash out at her. “No. This is more than just because they betrayed you. Why did you kill Tyler?”

“They hurt you.” The words were simple as though he was telling her about the weather. “I fancy you Caroline. That is no secret. Its why they took you. They wanted to hurt me in the worst way possible.” Elena’s words from earlier in the morning echoed in her mind. “Tyler never deserved you. He wasn’t even able to get those wolves to submit and it nearly cost you your life. If I let him live, do you think you would have been able to forgive him?”

“I don’t know.” It was true, Caroline did not know if she would have been able to forgive him. Over and over again Caroline found herself tortured and Tyler stood by and did nothing. That time Jules’s werewolf pack shot her over and over in the head and he just stood by and did nothing. Then last night when his own pack turned against her, he wasn’t strong enough to help her when she needed him most.

And yet Klaus killed them all without a second thought. He ended the one thing that he had been working towards for months, succeeding at the impossible, just because they hurt her; and broke his sire bond but Caroline wondered if he would have been so brutal about it if she had not been involved.

Klaus leaned down and kissed her on the forehead, much like he had done the night before in that barn that was now a scene out of a horror movie. Caroline sucked in a breath at the contact; feeling his lips on her skin was enough to send chills down her spine.

“He was your first love. I intend to be your last. However long it takes.”

The night sky’s clear, not a single cloud blocked the view. Right above my little tent I’d clearly see the Milky Way with it’s thousands and thousands of stars. Between us there was only the mossi net and a few birds that were still awake. The freshwater crocodiles were sleeping peacefully less than 15m in front of me in their little lake. I’ll never forget the night we’ve spent at Caroline Pool, Kimberley. I’ve never felt so small and vulnerable but strong and independent at the same time in my life.
