Only 1 woman of color has won the Oscar for Best Leading Actress in 95 years. Halle Berry for Monster’s Ball in 2002, 21 years ago. 14 Black women, one child of color have been nominated in 95 years. Numbers don’t lie. 1954- Dorothy Dandridge for Carmen Jones. 1972- Cicely Tyson for Sounder. 1972- Diana Ross for Lady Sings the Blues. 1974- Diahann Carroll for Claudine. 1985- Whoopi Goldberg for The Color Purple. 1993- Angela Bassett for What’s Love Got to Do with It. 2001- Halle Berry for Monster’s Ball. 2009- Gabourey Sidibe for Precious. 2011- Viola Davis for The Help. 2012- Quvenzhane Wallis for Beasts of the Southern Wild. 2016- Ruth Negga for Loving. 2019- Cynthia Erivo for Harriet. 2020- Andra Day for The United States vs. Billie Holliday. 2020- Viola Davis for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. The fact, Chinonye Chukwu’s beautifully made, historically relevant and important film, Till and The Woman King got no nominations speaks volumes. Till about a mother whose horrific loss sparked the civil rights movement. Representation matters, and the Academy failed again to recognize powerful Black female lead films with uncomfortable truths. #oscars2023 #lackofrepresentation #till #chinonyechukwu #dorothydandridge #carmenjones #cicelytyson #sounder #dianaross #ladysingstheblues #diahanncarroll #claudine #whoopigoldberg #thecolorpurple #angelabassett #whatslovegottodowithit #halleberry @halleberry #gaboureysidibe #precious @violadavis #violadavis #quvenzhanéwallis #beastsofthesouthernwild @iamquvenzhane #ruthnegga #loving #cynthiaerivo @cynthiaerivo #harriet #andraday #theusvsbillieholiday #violadavis #maraineysblackbottom #danielledeadwylersnubbed https://www.instagram.com/p/Cn2BYEru8Jw/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

RIP to this Queen 👑 We also lost the infamous and glamorous, Dorothy Dandridge on this day in 1965. She may have passed more than 50 years ago but she broke glass ceilings for women such as Halle Berry, Angela Bassett, Nia Long and even Diahann Carrol, who in turn have helped create even more Black actresses with more opportunities today. One of the Grandmothers of Black Actresses. #DorothyDandridge, also referred to as the "Black Marilyn Monroe" was the most popular actress of color in Hollywood in the 1950's. She's the first #Black woman to ever be nominated for Best Actress at the Academy Awards (Oscars). That infamous lead role in the film "Carmen Jones" made her a legend. She was born in Cleveland, Ohio. Her father was #European #British & #AfricanAmerican. Her mother was African American, her family being from #Jamaica. Family rumors claimed she had #Spanish #Mexican & #NativeAmerican ancestry too. True or not, Dorothy acknowledged her heritage by saying “If I am in any way a symbol, it stems from my being a #mixed American. The melting pot characteristics are written into my features.” She states this in her autobiography called Everything and Nothing. To me, the title has more than one meaning. She was more than one thing to many people all at the same time. 🎬🏴🏳️ #rip #ripdorothydandridge #actress #dorothyjeandandridge #marilynmonroe #carmenjones #halleberry #introducingdorothydandridge (at 1950s Glam) https://www.instagram.com/p/CiRQESVutE5/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The handsome Harry Belafonte, famous for the song ‘Island in the Sun’ and many others. He had a distinctive hairline when young. Looking great at 94 years old. My favorite singer, Janet Jackson, paying homage to Dorothy Dandridge in 1995. Did you know she owns the rights to her life story? She didn't get the part and Halle Berry did but Janet still paid tribute to her, in her music video, "Twenty Foreplay". #dorothydandridge #carmenjones #janetjackson #birthdaygirl https://www.instagram.com/p/CWEcLCrPgV8/?utm_medium=tumblr

"If Carmen succeeds in really establishing me, perhaps I can build up the kind of balanced career I’ve always longed for—a few pictures a year, recordings, and some sort of permanent social life there at home."-Dorothy Dandridge

Happy 96th Birthday to the incomparable, Dorothy Dandridge! Man, I wish the world had given her her flowers while she was here! I might fight anyone who calls her the "Black Marilyn Monroe." She was more than her beauty. She was more than her pain. She was unapologetically dope!! Wish more people knew of her dopeness. #dorothydandridge #Legend #GOAT #AngelFace #CarmenJones #greatness #Searsly #BlackExcellence #happybirthdaydorothydandridge #BrightRoad #CowCowBoogie https://www.instagram.com/p/Bp9xYAYA1rWGTEMxy9pd11iHEe8wTvLElACwGw0/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1gj564loks86
