Assignment 4: Recreating A Famous Photograph
Original Photograph
Chargesheimer, Politiker, 1956
Politiker, a photograph of the German Politician Konrad Adenauer, by photographer Carl-Heinz Hargesheimer, AKA Chargesheimer. In 1954, L. Fritz Gruber was writing a book about Konrad Adenauer, and asked Chargesheimer to take Adenauer’s photograph for his book. Later on, the photograph was featured as the cover photo for “Der Spiegel” Magazine during an election campaign. The photograph sparked positive and negative criticisms; it was seen by some as the best photograph of Adenauer as it looked as a sculpture of his face, not just a photograph. Others, mainly from the Christian Democratic Party, viewed it in a negative light as it showed Adenauer as an “old man” who is not eligible to join the elections; however, Adenauer ended up winning the elections.
The buzz around the photograph made it, and its photographer, popular. In 1961, Chargesheimer wrote a book about this photograph; he called it “Der Spiegel Spiegel” which translates to “Mirror of Der Spiegel”, a play on the magazine’s name “Mirror”.
The black & white photograph was taken in a studio with upper and back lights at a focal length around 50mm. It was taken from a slightly right angled position as Adenauer eyes are directed to the right to make contact with the camera.
Recreated Photograph
The photograph was shot in a dark room with upper light from a slightly right angle position with the following camera settings:
Shutter speed: 1/30
Aperture: F5.6
ISO: 800
Focal length: 49 mm
