One of the coolest live shows I've ever been to, this is Tired Ocean: a collaboration between ONE AUX founders Carl Antonowicz (Open Casket Soundsystem, Canto Comics) and Todd Woodlan (A Thousand Plateaus)

Great pix of #thefuturewithoutyou's debut at @staple, courtesy of their @Flickr! If you missed this show (and you did), have a lookie-loo and see a rough approximation of what could have entertained you! https://t.co/XowuJtCyty

Reporting live from Staple! Austin. Fun first day, showing off a “very wide array” of New Mexico comics at the 7000 BC table.
It was great to see Sophie Goldstein and Carl Antonowicz (Pittsburgh comics!) and I enjoyed meeting Ines Estrada (Mexican comics!). More about the scene later. :-)

On the Scene: SPACE 2015 brought good times, good comics
On the Scene: SPACE 2015 brought good times, good comics
The sixteenth annual Small Press and Alternative Comics Expo (SPACE) took place last weekend, July 18-19, at the Northland Performing Arts Center in Columbus, OH. I attended the expo and most of the accompanying events. Here’s a smattering of thoughts, recollections and observations in no particular order. While this year’s SPACE took place on the muggiest weekend of the summer, the show is…

A reunion and a fever. This marks the end of second of three chapters of my 2014 graphic novella The Pestle. I’m still proud of this work, dear readers, despite the amount of progress I have made as an artist and as a storyteller in the intervening time. I am aware that were I to ‘redo’ this comic, I would have made many different choices and the end result would likely be more attractive in several ways, but looking backward with regret is a sure road to madness. My intent is to share the third chapter with you all later this year, and conceivably a bit more of my work from this period and later. We will see what the fates have in store. You can read part 1 in its entirety here, and purchase a complete print edition here. I recommend the print edition for multiple reasons: the artwork reads better, the binding is nice, and I could definitely use your cash.

Writing Blog Tour: Filthy Ducks and Crashing Trucks
Writing Blog Tour: Filthy Ducks and Crashing Trucks
Back in July, I got tagged by cartoonist pal Carl Antonowicz to participate in a series of cartoonists’ writing process, then totally forgot about it.
But I remembered, and now here I am to write about writing.
1)     What am I working on? I am finishing up a 4-page comic for an anthology, titled, “Disgusting Duck in Fowl Trouble.”  It is a submission for a friend’s humor anthology, which I am…

Our Man in Sumter
As listeners of The Comics Alternative know, Andy oversees the annual Sumter Comic Arts Symposium every spring, and this year is no different. And this time, not only has he organized the entire event, but he also took time out of his duties to interview several of the creators who appeared at the symposium. First, he speaks with Sophie Goldstein and Carl Antonowicz at the local Waffle House -- the sound quality isn't ideal, but the breakfast ambience is palpable -- and then he conducts an interview with Jeremy Whitley, talking primarily about his recent work with Marvel Comics.
Be sure to check out today's companion on-location episode where Derek talks with several artists and publishers at Fan Expo Dallas 2017!

Maple Key Comics contributor and PR manager Carl Antonowicz( @thulsadude) draws intense, dark, and generally pretty grim comics. His story in our second issue starts off at a witch burning--and that's the most cheerful part of the narrative.
Tumblr media
Antonowicz's work in "A Sickness..." is marked by the heaviest of spot blacks set off by areas of painstakingly intricate detail. His storytelling is taut, suspenseful, and will very likely unsettle a few readers--which, he tells us, is what keeps his black little heart beating.
Tumblr media
You can see more of Antonowicz's work at his tumblr, and you can follow him on twitter too if you like weird jokes about death.
Maple Key Comics Issue 2 is coming out next month--you should preorder while supplies last!
