Exploration is in our nature. We began as wanderers, and we are wanderers still.

A composite image of the Cosmic Cliffs in the Carina Nebula, created with the Webb telescope’s NIRCam and MIRI instruments. Pinkish brown clouds of gas and dust dominate the foreground of the image, glittering with young stars. Behind the glowing, mountainous clouds, the sky appears navy blue, with shining stars and galaxies.

The Carina Nebula, C92 // Ting Yu
Several different objects are located within the gigantic Carina Nebula (NGC 3372). Most famous of them is the luminous hypergiant star, η Carinae, shining with about 4 million times the light output of our Sun and over 100 times as massive and 240 times as large!
Surrounding η Carinae itself is the Homunculus Nebula, believed to have been created in 1841 when the star had an outburst of energy. This briefly made η Carinae the second-brightest star in the sky!
Numerous other darker clouds of light-obscuring dust seem to point towards η Carinae as its stellar wind erodes them. Famously, the Carina Nebula was selected as one of five cosmic objects first observed by the James Webb Space Telescope, the image titled "Cosmic Cliffs".
