Imposter Syndrome
Photo by Rishabh Dharmani Previous articles I have written can come back to Imposter syndrome. My article on mental health looked at men’s stubbornness when it comes to admission of needing help. Then later we looked at a modern trend of “fake it till you make it”, which is covered again later in this article. So, as I have said before, I am not a mental health professional but have been forced…

The Perfect Fit
What’s something you would attempt if you were guaranteed not to fail. Well, if I couldn’t fail at something, I’d definitely go all in with my career plans. I’m actually about to start a postgraduate certificate in Human Resources in Canada. I’ve got a degree in Business Administration, with a major in Human Resources Development Management, so it’s like the perfect fit. With no fear of failure,…

3 Ways to Improve Your Workplace Motivation
Many organizations compete for the top talent by providing competitive compensation and benefits packages for employees. Surprisingly, for most people today, money is not usually the number one motivator. Although many managers believe employees are motivated most by money in the workplace, research shows that money is only the fifth most common motivator.
Examples of motivational factors include, but are not limited to:
Purpose
Achievement
Flexible Work Schedule
Technology
Culture
Travel
Money
Status
Stability
Each person is motivated by different factors in the workplace. Motivational factors are not universal and change on both a personal level and a generational level. For instance, younger generations, like Millennials are more likely to value greater schedule flexibility, technology, and performance recognition. Whereas Baby Booms are more likely to value money, stability, and status.
Of course, people need money to survive – to place food on the table, pay rent, cover expenses, and so on. Money is likely to be the number one motivating factor until the costs for our survival are covered.
However, based on David Pink's research regarding motivating workplace factors, he found that higher financial incentives for tasks involving above basic skills actually lead to worse performance.
For example, a person working in the tech industry many actually be less motivated if his or her organization offered a financial incentive to create a unique software app. Instead this person could increase his or her motivation by receiving upper-level recognition or the ability to perform work from anywhere in the world.
Pink's research found people who are paid sufficiently to eliminate financial concerns can increase motivation with autonomy, mastery, and purpose.
1. Autonomy - the desire to be self-directed.
Achieving Autonomy requires trust, which is essential for motivation. It reinforces the confidence that the employee can get the job done accordingly. People do not like to be micro-managed, and self-direction encourages creative thinking and problem-solving.
Helpful ways to increase Autonomy:
• First, set a time to have a constructive meeting with your direct manager.
• Discuss ways of how you can work more autonomously.
• Can you take on more responsibility? Enact a check-in process to show you are achieving your work on your terms?
2. Mastery - the desire to get better at something.
Achieving Mastery requires confidence. The more confident someone becomes in something, the more motivation, and excitement that person will have to improve.
Helpful ways to increase Mastery:
• Reading Books – your public library is a great and free resource (containing a vast selection of both e-books and audiobooks).
• Watching YouTube videos – it seems like there is a video out there for everything.
• Reaching out to a person who has experience with your area of interest – this can be a person you know personally or someone you found online via LinkedIn or another platform.
• Taking a class – searching for a local class or finding something online like SkillShare.
3. Purpose - the reason for doing something.
Purpose defines a person's "why" and fuels the desire to do something.
Helpful ways to find your purpose:
• Make a list of things you are naturally drawn to.
• What topics inherently capture your attention?
• What activities make the time seem to fly by?
• What areas do you seem to know a lot about or care about?
Takeaway
In every job, people will experience both good days and bad days, and there will always be distinct pros and cons. No job is perfect, including your dream job. However, as long as we can eliminate the financial concerns to cover essential expenses, by achieving autonomy, mastery, and purpose, we can improve our workplace motivations and help increase our overall job satisfaction.

It may be tempting to use the fact that you’re working from home as the perfect get out, to hide, and perhaps to release any pressure or expectation that would normally be present when working in the office. However, if you sink into the background you WILL come to regret it.

The sweetest tunes are those that are un-heard, contrary to what is commonly believed. When requested to sing, Sudhir Patil, Senior Mobile App Developer at PracticeLeague, doesn't think twice. He amazed us all with his singing ability, and we were all genuinely surprised. He claimed that joining the PracticeLeague family had given him the confidence to sing once more, and we were all very moved by the lyrics of the classic Gazal song "Chupke.... Chupke" that he performed on the last Diwali night. "I try to teach my daughter what I know about music. I share with her specific details about how I love to accomplish this in the present. PracticeLeague encouraged me to sing again, which is why these things are happening”. PracticeLeague gave Sudhir a platform to express himself, making our group the unique family that it is today. #freedomday2023 #Worldpressfreedomday #workculture #careerconfidence #FreedomDay #freedomofexpression #companyculture #workplaceculture #employeeexperience #employeeappreciation #companyvalues #employeewellness #officeculture
