I noticed a stark difference in terms of promotions and castings between RB and Russian companies (particularly Mariinsky and Bolshoi).
1. RB is still going full-principal castings for the lead roles, although sometimes they cast first soloists too, and soloists once in a blue moon (usually in The Nutcracker). I think RB is quite hierarchical in terms of castings. Meanwhile those Russian companies tend to cast younger dancers for lead roles nowadays, and dancers at any rank could get the lead roles if the theatre wants.
2. It's not uncommon for freshgrads (or even graduating students) in Russian companies to get major soloist roles during their first year in the company, but in RB, the young dancers usually have to wait several years to get it. For example, Eva Sergeyenkova got to dance Queen of the Dryads with the main company before she even graduated, but Hanna Park and Sumina Sasaki only got the same role this season after they danced for 3-4 years with the company.
3. I know this is common knowledge: an exceptional Russian freshgrad could enter the company as a soloist without spending a single day in the corps. But in RB, no matter how exceptional the freshgrad is, they should start from the corps for several years before eventually getting promoted (some who were considered exceptional got promoted consecutively after spending several years in the corps, though).
I know that there's no perfect system, but from the perspective of a professional, which one do you think is the better system for the artist's growth? Sometimes, as a general audience, I think Russian companies' pace is too fast, and RB's is rather too slow.
I'm sorry if this is too long :') thank you in advance!
I don't disagree with anything you've written here. I think promoting young and giving chances young can work, but it has to be the right people. You mentioned several cases at ROH and agree with your interpretations. ABT is edging younger right now, but Chloe Misseldine, Sunmi Park and Jake Roxander have clearly proven they've got the chops. Even so, Chloe has done one major classical role and the others haven't yet.
This is a total 180 to recent graduates of BBA and VBA preparing nearly half a dozen of debuts leading roles in a season. ROH takes much slower approach and I think most of the time it pays off. Sometimes they lose people who want their careers to move more quickly but on the whole, I think slow and steady wins the race.
Ill ask you this, lately in the past 5 or so years, which company has been delivering the most consistent performances of quality, with a wide variety of dancers in the leading roles?

What is your opinion on the 2023 graduates that have been given a lot of soloist roles in the Bolshoi, Koshkaryova, Kuprina, Valiullina, Konovalova, and Netsvetaeva-Dolgaleva? And on the Mariinsky side of favored 2023 dancers, how do you feel about Kulikova and Karamysheva? If you’ve seen any videos of them, of course.
Disclaimer: I do not watch videos of them as students when saying my opinions of them as they are all at least a year into their professional careers.
I don't like Maria Koshkaryova, both her Swanhilda and Gamzatti debuts were incredibly underwhelming. She was lucky her Solor was Vladislav Lantratov because he saved her so many times during the grand pas. Her Kitri was definitely better though, part of which is due to the fact that she has had a bit more time to develop as a professional.
The only thing I remember about Yaroslavna Kuprina was after watching her debut in the Swan Lake pas de trois (last year I think), I really liked her hands. I haven't watched enough of her to form any real opinion other than that detail.
Out of all of them, Sofya Valiullina is probably my favorite. She is the only one who looks like she feels comfortable onstage and she doesn't come across as fake happy, she seems to be very much herself but in a very good way. I really like her in the Naiad and the Fisherman variation she does in Paquita, she just makes you smile!
I've never even heard of Polina Netsvetaeva-Dolgaleva tbh. I don't pay attention to students and it's even more difficult to pay attention to BBA students as they don't publish anything. I also don't follow them on social media.
I've only watched two videos of Kulikova, Princess Florine and Masha, and I don't like either variation so it's hard to separate that from her actual dancing. From what I remember of those two videos, she is a dancer who had slightly sloppy technique but has a cute stage personality. If she continues to improve her technique so the point where she is very comfortable enough that her entire personality can shine through, she has a lot of potential to be quite charming and fun to watch.
No idea who Karamysheva is.

I don’t think we talk enough of what happened to people in their late 20s and early 30s during Covid.
You had just graduated and entered the workforce a few years back. Started building your career, taking steps up on those ladders. You had maybe moved in with a spouse a few years back.
Suddenly, everything changed. You were locked in with the spouse. Or perhaps you missed out on your golden years of finding a spouse. Work changed. Suddenly everything was Gen Z this and that. You were suddenly too old for the specialist level and way too uncool as per your year of birth, and too young for management and exec level. You were supposed to have children, but the spouse left during the lockdown, or you didn't find anyone because of the said lockdown.
And now you're this person with a strange period in your CV when you've been stuck. It doesn't matter if you took courses in Yale, Harvard, or Cambrigde to boost your knowledge. Your still the one who got stuck during Covid.
I literally have BBA, BSc, MBA, MSc, diploma in information technology, and a degree worth of courses from universities like Yale, Harvard, and Johns Hopkins, and can't get a job anymore because they either go to Gen Z just graduating or Boomers in the end of their career, and my doctor keeps asking me if I'm pregnant soon while my fiancee left after lockdown to run away with a younger girl.
