Nursing home staff members falsify patient records, cover up elder abuse

Falsifying records is a common action of nursing home or assisted living facility staff members that leads to elder abuse and neglect.

Falsifying records can lead to serious injury of an elderly patient. Often times, a staff member of a nursing home or assisted living facility will make inaccurate statements on a patient’s chart in order to protect themselves and the facility from being identified as an elder abuse offender.

As highlighted in this 2011 article in The Sacramento Bee (http://www.sacbee.com/2011/09/18/3918688/falsified-patient-records-are.html) featuring STOP EA attorney Ed Dudensing, some of the examples of this type of behavior include covering up incidents that resulted in death or injuries, incomplete charts due to lazy staff and patients not receiving proper medication after a staff member marks in their chart that the patient had received all of their medications.

Nursing home staff failing to report health changes in elderly is abuse

Monitoring and reporting any changes in the health of an elderly individual is an important part of the care that staff at nursing homes and assisted living facilities are supposed to provide.

But too many times, these facilities keep family members in the dark about changes in their loved one’s health because facility staff are either neglectful of their duties or fearful that family members will find out about substandard care provided to their loved one. This substandard care is sometimes a result of overworked staff, which leads to injuries from serious falls or untreated sores, etc.
