First Look: The 2019 Audi R8
“Born on the track, built for the road.” This intrinsic Audi Sport philosophy rings particularly true in the case of the new R8, which is set to take to the road in early 2019 featuring a raft of changes, but also two important constants – retention of the much loved naturally aspirated V10 petrol engine, and suffusion with a sizable dose of racing DNA achieved by sharing 50 per cent of components with the R8 LMS GT3 competition car. Highlights of the latest R8 range include more power, torque and performance, including a first foray beyond the 200mph mark for several versions, and even greater handling precision thanks to suspension and steering revisions.
The power of the naturally aspirated V10 engine at the heart of the R8 is now uprated to 570PS in the ‘standard’ R8 Coupé and Spyder V10 quattro. The top V10 plus versions in each body style will in future carry the name ‘V10 performance’, aligning them with the most powerful models elsewhere in the Audi Sport range, and have also benefited from a power upgrade to 620PS. The four versions will go on sale in Europe in early 2019.
Even more power and torque: the engines
Instant response, lightning-fast high-revving and a unique sound – the heart of the Audi R8 is its naturally aspirated ten-cylinder engine. With the basic unit, the 540PS of power has been increased by 30PS and the torque boosted by 10 Nm (7.4 lb-ft) to 550 Nm (405.7 lb-ft), which is on tap at 6,500 revolutions per minute. The Audi R8 V10 quattro accelerates from 0 to 62mph in 3.4 seconds (Coupé) and 3.5 seconds (Spyder) before reaching a top speed of 201mph (Spyder: 200mph).
The 5.2 FSI in the Audi R8 V10 performance quattro generates 620PS instead of the previous 610PS, with peak torque of 580 Nm (427.8 lb-ft) improving upon the previous 560 Nm (413.0 lb-ft). The increase here is primarily the result of an optimized valve train with components made of titanium. The Coupé sprints to 62mph in 3.1 seconds, the Spyder in 3.2 seconds. The propulsive power ends at 205mph and 204mph respectively. Both engines come with a particulate filter to reduce emissions more effectively.
Razor-sharp precision: the suspension
Modifications to the suspension provide even more stability and precision. The assistance has been retuned both with the optional dynamic steering and the electromechanical power steering. Steering response, transitions between individual drive modes and feedback from the road come across as even more precise across the entire speed range.
In addition, Audi Sport has made the distinction between the profiles available as part of the Audi drive select dynamic handling system – comfort, auto, dynamic and individual – even clearer. On the R8 V10 performance quattro the three additional programs dry, wet and snow form part of the Performance mode as standard. They adapt the key dynamic parameters to the friction coefficient of the road. Thanks to the enhanced Electronic Stabilisation Control (ESC), the Audi R8 V10 performance brakes from 62mph to a standstill up to 1.5 meters earlier; the stopping distance from 124mph is up to five meters shorter – in each case depending on the exterior conditions.
The new Audi R8 V10 quattro is equipped with factory-installed 19-inch wheels. For the standard-fit steel discs Audi supplies red as opposed to black painted calipers as an option. The ceramic brakes generally come with a grey or red finish. The anti-roll bar at the front is optionally made from carbon fibre-reinforced polymer (CFRP) and aluminium, which cuts weight by around two kilograms.
Sharper and tauter: the design
The honed character of the new R8 models also becomes clear visually. The Singleframe radiator grille has an even wider, flatter line. Thick bars divide up the large air inlets, and flat slits in the hood are reminiscent of the Audi Ur-quattro brand icon. The new front splitter is now wider, underscoring the focused look. The air vent grille runs across the full width; the diffuser has been drawn upward, making the R8 seem even wider. In the engine compartment the air filter is situated under a new, three-part cover, which is available in a choice of plastic or carbon fiber.
R8 customers can choose from three exterior packages depending on the engine variant; these packages add various highlights to the front splitter, the side trims and the diffuser. Standard specification for the R8 V10 quattro with 570PS is high-gloss black; the top-of-the-line version R8 V10 performance quattro with 620PS comes off the production line with a matte titanium look. The high-gloss carbon package is available for both engine variants. As an option, the Audi rings and badges on the exterior are painted in high-gloss black; the new metallic colors Kemora grey and Ascari blue are recent additions to the paint range.
The new look also includes the Audi R8 interior with its driver focus and new color and stitching options. The Audi exclusive range gives customers the opportunity to customize many details of their Audi R8 – inside and out.
Exclusive handicraft: R8 sports car manufacture
The Audi R8 is produced under the management of Audi Sport GmbH, a 100% subsidiary of AUDI AG, at the “Audi Böllinger Höfen” site in Heilbronn – very close to the tradition-rich location of Neckarsulm. Up to 500 highly-qualified employees work here at the 30,000 m2 production site.
The R8 production is organised as a flexible factory – where Audi Sport GmbH is further expanding its competence with regards to small batch production. Self-driving assembly skids, known as driverless transport systems (DTS), are not only used to carry the finished, painted body, but also for assembly, and replace the classic conveyor technology system. The DTS transport system has autonomous navigation that uses environmental features and RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) as well as high-performance capacitors. During assembly, the employees perform a large proportion of the manual activities in 15 cycles.
Flexibility is extremely important at the “Audi Böllinger Höfen” site – alongside the series models, the employees also produce the R8 LMS GT4. This demands a permanent transfer of technology from the motorsport sector, as well as very strong qualifications due to the complexity of the work processes.
Before delivery, every new high-performance sports car must pass a demanding acceptance process. This is followed by a quality inspection on the factory’s own test track and a test drive on public roads. Only then is the new Audi released for delivery to the customer.
During the first quarter of 2019, the new Audi R8 models will be available to order via the Audi Configurator and in Audi Centres across the UK.

Rowing through the gears of your machine on the open road is an enjoyable experience. Manual transmissions are a dying breed. Manufacturers find that an automatic is just more efficient than having a human row through the gears himself. Manual transmissions allow the driver to complete control over the behavior of a gearbox. Whereas some automatics can be a little unpredictable when it comes to shifting, having a manual leaves up shifts and downshifts completely up to the driver. The manual transmission has true engine braking. Going down a hill will be so much easier because the car will really slow down when a low gear is selected. Hope and fear surround emerging technologies, but all of us must contribute to stronger governance
by Nicholas Davis and Aleksandar Subic
It’s been a big year for companies pushing the boundaries of technology – and not in a good way. The Cambridge Analytica scandal led to a public outcry about privacy, the Commonwealth Bank’s loss of customer data raised concerns about cybersecurity, and a fatal self-driving car crash put the safety of automated systems in the spotlight.
These controversies are just the latest warning signs that we urgently need better governance of the technologies redefining the world. There is a widening gap in knowledge between those creating and using emerging technologies and those we charge with regulating them. Governance cannot be left just to the public sector – it is a job for all citizens.
Until now, we’ve been sleepwalking through the early stages of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. We dream of a future where artificial intelligence, synthetic biology, distributed ledgers and neurotechnologies magically make life better for all.
As we begin to wake up, it’s becoming clear the world has already changed around us in profound ways. We’re realizing that creating and commercializing powerful new technologies is the easy part – the hard bit is making sure these new capabilities give us what we need and want, rather than what we imagine and fear.
Building the technology we want
What we want is to realize the benefits of revolutionary new digital technologies to the economy, our quality of life and a more sustainable world.
Analysis by consultancy AlphaBeta suggests that automation could add A$2.2 trillion to cumulative Australian GDP between 2017 and 2030. In healthcare, diagnostic approaches and treatments targeted to individuals could be as dramatic a change in our ability to prevent and treat illness as was the introduction of sanitation and antibiotics.
More generally, advances in machine learning are demonstrating that algorithms can simultaneously benefit companies, shareholders, citizens and the environment. We may be amazed at the prowess of computers beating the world’s best Go players, but perhaps more impressive is that Google DeepMind’s AI managed to reduce Google’s Data Centre energy use by 15%. That’s a recurring benefit amounting to hundreds of millions of dollars. DeepMind subsequently launched discussions with the UK’s National Grid to try and save 10% of the UK’s energy bill.
What we fear is that history will rhyme, and not in a good way.
The social and environmental damage resulting from previous industrial revolutions taught us that new technologies don’t inevitably lead to better outcomes for everyone. For a start, the benefits are often unevenly distributed – witness the one billion people around the world who still lack access to electricity. And when we do discover that harm is occurring, there’s often a significant lag before the law catches up.
What it means to be awake
Most fundamentally, being awake means recognizing that the same exciting systems that promise openness and deliver convenience come with significant costs that are affecting citizens right now. And many of those costs are being borne by those least able to afford them – communities with less access to wealth or power, and those already marginalized.
These costs go well beyond risks to our privacy.
When an algorithm fails to predict the next word you want to type, that’s generally not a big deal. But when an algorithm – intelligent or otherwise – uses a flawed model to decide whether you are eligible for government benefits, whether you should get bail or whether you should be allowed to board a flight, we’re talking about potential violations of human rights and procedural fairness.
And that’s without getting into the challenge of harassment within virtual reality, the human security risks posed by satellite imagery that refreshes every day, and the ways in which technologies that literally read our minds can be used to manipulate us.
The government alone can’t fix this
It’s tempting to say that this isn’t yet a big problem. Or that if it is a problem, it must be up to the government to find a solution.
Unfortunately, our traditional, government-led ways of governing technologies are far from fit for purpose. Many emerging technologies, such as novel applications of machine learning, cryptocurrencies, and promising biotechnologies are being developed – and often commercialized – at breakneck speed that far exceeds legislative or regulatory cycles. As a result, public governance is continually out of date.
Meanwhile, the novelty and complexity of emerging technologies is widening the knowledge and skills gap between public and private sectors.
Even communication is getting harder. As former US Secretary of State Madeleine K. Albright put it:
Citizens are speaking to their governments using 21st-century technologies, governments are listening on 20th-century technology and providing 19th-century solutions.
Our governance solutions are out of step with today’s powerful technologies. This is not the fault of government – it’s a design flaw affecting every country around the world. But given the flaw exists, we should not be surprised that things are not going as well as we’d like.
How do we get out of this pickle?
Here are three suggestions.
1. Take an active role in shaping future directions
We need to shift our mindset from being passive observers to active participants.
The downside of talking about how powerful and transformational new technologies are is that we forget that human beings are designing, commercializing, marketing, buying and using this technology.
Adopting a “wait and see” approach would be a mistake. Instead, we must recognize that Australian institutions and organizations have the power to shape this revolution in a direction we want.
This approach means focusing on leading – rather than adapting to – a changing technological environment in partnership with the business community. One example is the Swinburne Factory of the Future, which gives Victorian businesses exposure to the latest technologies and processes in a non-competitive, supportive environment. It also offers ways of assessing the likely impact of technology on individual companies, as well as entire sectors.
2. Build a bridge between public and private sectors
We need to embrace any and all opportunities for collaboration across the public and private sectors on the issue of new governance models.
Technology leaders are starting to demand this. At the World Economic Forum’s Annual Meeting in January 2018, Uber’s Dara Khosrowshahi said:
My ask of regulators would be to be harder in their ask of accountability.
At the same meeting, Marc Benioff, CEO of SalesForce, called for more active public sector guidance, saying:
That is the point of regulators and government – to come in and point true north.
To have real impact, cross-sector collaboration should be structured to lead to new Australian partnerships and institutions that can help spread benefits, manage costs and ensure the technology revolution is centred on people.
In 2017, the World Economic Forum launched its Center for the Fourth Industrial Revolution in San Francisco. It works directly with multinationals, startups, civil society and a range of governments to pilot new governance models around AI, drones, autonomous vehicles, precision medicine, distributed ledgers and much more.
The Australian government and business community can and should benefit from this work.
Cross-sector collaboration means much more than simply getting stakeholders in a room. Recent work by the PETRAS Internet of Things Research Hub – a consortium of nine leading UK universities – found that most international discussions on cybersecurity have made no progress relevant to IoT in recent years. A primary reason for this is that the technical experts and the policymakers find it difficult to interact – they essentially speak different languages.
The same challenge has been facing the international community working on the governance of lethal autonomous weapons systems. Anja Kaspersen, the UN’s Deputy Secretary General of the Conference on Disarmament, noted recently that, when it comes to discussing how the use of lethal robots might be controlled, her most valuable role is to be a translator across disciplines, countries and sectors.
By taking this approach at the April 2018 meeting of the Group of Government Experts, Kaspersen and Ambassador Amandeep Singh Gill made substantial progress in aligning expert views and driving convergence on issues, such as the primacy of international humanitarian law.
The desired outcome is not just new rules, but inclusive governance structures that are appropriately adapted to the fast-changing nature of new technologies. While reaching out across across geographic and sector boundaries takes considerable time and energy, it is worth the effort as it often leads to unexpected benefits for society.
For example, The Prime Minister’s Industry 4.0 Taskforce was inspired by Germany to encourage collaboration between government and the labour movement on issues facing industry and workers. As a result, the cross-sector Industry 4.0 Testlabs and the Future of Work and Education workstream is co-chaired by Swinburne’s Aleksandar Subic and the National President of the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union, Andrew Dettmar.
3. Tackle the moral component of emerging technologies
Third, we need to appreciate that these issues cannot be solved by simply designing better algorithms, creating better incentives or by investing in education and training, as important as all those aspects are.
Technologies are not neutral. They are shaped by our assumptions about the world, by our biases and human frailties. And the more powerful a technology is, the greater our responsibility to make sure it is consciously designed and deployed in ways that uphold our values.
The Centrelink robo-debt controversy demonstrated what happens when algorithms prioritize the value of efficiency over the value of protecting people – and how this can backfire.
Unfortunately, the ethical and moral aspects of technology are often (and incorrectly) viewed as falling into one of two categories. Either as soft, imprecise and inessential issues interesting only to lefty activists: a distraction in the boardroom. Or as technical, regulatory, compliance-related challenges, discussed in the boardroom only when a crisis has occurred.
A far more useful framing of ethics in technology is as a set of practical, accessible and essential tools that can help organizations create sustainable value. A forthcoming white paper from the World Economic Forum on Values, Ethics and Innovation argues that leaders can and should make ethics a priority when inventing, investing in, developing, deploying and marketing new ideas and systems.
A critical task here is building ethical considerations into the very early stages of creating new technologies. Commercial AI teams are beginning to do this.
One example is the recent formation of Microsoft’s AI and Ethics in Engineering and Research (AETHER) Committee, announced in March this year. It brings together senior executives to develop internal policies around responsible innovation in AI, with the AI research team reporting through members of the committee.
The next step is leading together
Governing emerging technologies is as much a moral and political task as a technocratic challenge. All Australians need to be involved in discussing what we want from technology, and helping to design the institutions that can help us avoid costs we’re not willing to bear as a society.
In practice, this means more frequent and more diverse conversations about the impact of today’s and tomorrow’s technology. It means more innovative forms of public debate. And it means that the most influential institutions in this space – particularly Australian governments, technology firms and national champions – need to listen and experiment with the goal of social, as well as economic and technological, progress in mind.
We’re starting to wake up. Now the real work begins.
This article is part of our occasional series Zoom Out. Here we offer authors a slightly longer essay format to widen their focus, and explore key ideas in science and technology in the broader context of society and humanity.

What are the three reasons and why industrial automation is important
1. Industrial automation lifts productivity
Industrial automation, for starters, boosts the productivity of jobs, processes, and enterprises in factories and on shop floors dramatically. Processes that once required armies of workers (think car manufacturing or food processing plants from 20, 30, or 40 years ago) now require a fraction of that labor – an important consideration given today's supply issues and labor shortages caused by slowing population growth in many parts of the world.
But it's not only about saving money on labor and getting more done in less time. Because machinery is used and maintained more efficiently, the digitalization of production, and especially the emergence of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), means improved throughput and reduced downtime. According to McKinsey, using sensors on machines decreases maintenance costs by 10-15%.
The IIoT also gives you the ability to change output based on demand. New open-source approaches, for example, are more simply upgradeable. Operators will spend less time reprogramming or re-engineering if orders change, resulting in enhanced machine availability.
Finally, well-configured industrial automation systems reduce error and variability, resulting in increased production. Stamping, soldering, welding, material handling, and packing are just a few of the repetitive operations that may be automated to produce consistently high-quality goods.
2. Industrial automation arms the industrial workforce
Companies that were sluggish to implement industrial automation tools before COVID-19 are now being compelled to reconsider their strategies. Workers were frequently unable to physically access industrial locations, warehouses, and logistics centres due to lockdowns and social-distancing techniques.
This has underlined the need for tools and technology that allow employees to safely access, monitor, operate, and service machines, control systems, and other equipment from afar.
This includes augmented-reality glasses and other wearable technology, as well as IIoT connectivity, enhanced analytics, and cloud-based technologies that improve the monitoring of industrial operations. Supervisors may make data-driven decisions, more precisely modify the output, and improve real-time operational efficiency – all while working from afar.
Meanwhile, data exchange and digital traceability technologies have dramatically increased firms' ability to obtain visibility and transparency across their value chains to validate the origin of parts and products. This is now an essential approach to creating confidence while making operations more resilient to possible supply challenges, especially as organisations are increasingly held accountable for the activities of their suppliers and partners.
3. Industrial automation can lower industry’s impact on the environment
The third major advantage of industrial automation, and one that is less visible, is that it may help us lessen our environmental effects.
To reduce greenhouse gas emissions, energy and carbon-intensive businesses need greater management of operational indicators and efficiency levers. Digital automation solutions can help, as shown in a new breed of industrial plants that manage production, resources, and business operations in an environmentally friendly manner by managing asset and operational data across numerous sites and whole value chains.
Powerful visualisations on dashboards display thousands of data points to track real-time production, giving deep insights into resource management, overall equipment effectiveness, and enterprise-wide optimization.
Even notoriously high-emitting industries in difficult-to-abate sectors are combining industrial automation with energy management technology from a central command centre to get a better picture of where energy can be saved and waste can be minimised.

2012 BDP is again top in Western Europe
BDP has again come top – by fee income – of the Western Europe chart of the WA100 2012 survey of the world’s largest architecture practices, a position the practice has held for over 10 consecutive years.
The UK is still the firm’s largest market but China and India are growing substantially and for the practice, many of its key projects are to be found in Asia, including: the masterplanning of a sustainable city of 160,000 people in Hua’an China; two masterplans in Kerala, India; one for the Indian Institute of Technology in Mandi; and one in Suzhou, China.
Peter Drummond, BDP’s Chief Executive said “These are the most extraordinary times that we have experienced at any time in our 50 year history. There is an enormous contrast in dealing with economic uncertainty and lower investment in social infrastructure in the west with massive investment in markets such as India and China. But we believe that our distinctive humanistic approach to architecture and placemaking creates a strong position for BDP in both circumstances.”
15 Oct 2011 BDP’s Shanghai studio moves to larger premises
As part of a long term strategy for continuing to work in China and accommodate a larger design team BDP has moved into larger premises, still in Shanghai.

BDP has been involved in China since 2007 and opened a studio at the end of 2010 to support this work and win further projects across the sectors.
Since then, the practice has successfully won a number of major developments ranging from urban regeneration masterplans through higher education, cultural and leisure facilities to retail and housing right across China including Beijing, Foshan, Hangzhou, Lanzhou, Nanjing, Shanghai and Suzhou.
The head of BDP’s Shanghai Studio, Stephen Gillham, said “To support BDP’s vision for China, our expanding portfolio and our growing design team, we are moving from premises which we had already outgrown to a brand new building nearby in Shanghai’s Luwan District from where we will be able to provide even stronger solutions for our clients.“

11 Jul 2011 BDP – Appointment Architect Scott Mackenzie has been appointed to BDP’s board of directors. Scott has significant experience in the education sector and his appointment will strengthen the leadership in the Glasgow studio. He is currently working on new build facilities for both Inverness and Kilmarnock Colleges and the University of Strathclyde’s Technology Innovation Centre. He is also project director for the Robert Gordon University Garthdee Campus, which involves the consolidation of the University’s estate at a stunning campus on the banks of the River Dee. Scott joined BDP in 1999 and has been a director since 2006.
Placebook As BDP is 50 this year they have created a blog to celebrate all the lovely projects created over the last 50 years. BDP are asking people to nominate their favourite BDP project on their Placebook blog. The blog encourages people to discuss, vote on, and nominate their favourite BDP buildings and projects. Placebook started out as a simple idea to introduce current BDP designers to the history and diversity of work over the first 50 years. Such was the reaction to the idea, BDP have opened it up to former colleagues, friends, clients, contractors, journalists or anyone who may ever have enjoyed spending time in one of their buildings.
6 May 2011 BDP Cyclists set off in Aid of UK Charities At 9.20am this morning more than 30 cyclists set out from BDP’s London studio in Clerkenwell aiming for the studio in the Netherlands via Harwich on the first leg of the relay cycle ride which will involve over 200 riders from BDP on a tour around all of its studios in the UK, Ireland, and the Netherlands.
BDP Cycle for Jo London Send off: pictures : Sanna Fisher-Payne, BDP
They were given a huge send off preceded by short speeches by Martin Houghton-Brown Chief Executive of charity Missing People and BDP Chief Executive Peter Drummond.
BDP – the UK’s leading interdisciplinary design practice – launched ‘Cycle for Jo’ a fundraising challenge in honour of the landscape architect from BDP’s Bristol studio, Jo Yeates, who went missing and was tragically found dead on Christmas Day.
The first team left BDP’s Clerkenwell studio in London today and the last team will arrive back in London on 25 May. Members from BDP studios in Abu Dhabi and India have also joined by cycling in their local areas.
In his speech BDP’s CEO Peter Drummond said, “Cycle for Jo is our way of marking and remembering (Jo’s) too short a life with us. And it is so fitting that the idea of a tour de BDP should come from a group of young people in the firm – the decision to dedicate it to Jo and raise money for causes that she believed in and the charity Missing People was a no-brainer.”
As part of a series marking BDP’s 50th anniversary, “Cycle for Jo” will raise funds for the charities Missing People, the British Red Cross and RSPCA.
11 Feb 2011 BDP wins Kuwait Masterplan
BDP has successfully bid for a transport and planning framework masterplan for the Salmiya district of Kuwait City; the formal signing of the 14 month contract, with a value in excess of £2m, took place in January. Salmiya district is an existing urbanised area on the Gulf Coast of approximately 20 sq km. Growing congestion, pressures for redevelopment and a recognition of the existing poor quality of place have led the Kuwait Municipality to commission this work which will set in place the infrastructure, planning and design guidelines to enable the transformation of the district over the next 15 years.
BDP has been challenged to create a sustainable masterplan for Salmiya district to keep it car-friendly, but also flexible for future growth. This will include more strategic siting of any new public works such as schools, universities and hospitals in relation to residential zones, plans for improved public transport provision, and better all-round pedestrian access to Salmiya’s shops and civic amenities.
In addition the BDP-led Salmiya masterplan will work in harmony with the third Kuwait masterplan known as 3KMP. The 3KMP is an umbrella development strategy for the whole of Kuwait which is designed to help cope with the intensive economic and population growth anticipated in the region over the next 20 years.
Francis Glare, BDP’s head of urbanism said “We would like to acknowledge the importance of the collaboration with our local consultants OBD and their contribution to the winning of this project. We believe this will be a growing area of work for us, as a new place-making approach starts to be applied to first generation Middle Eastern cities. The BDP approach is particularly relevant to the cities and societies of the Middle East as they move on from North American driven models of city planning dominated by traffic engineering.”
3 Feb 2011 Remembering Jo Statement from Keith Pavey, Head of BDP’s Bristol Studio
“It is now over seven weeks since Jo was so tragically taken from us and it is still difficult to come to terms with her untimely and unnecessary death.
We have been overwhelmed by the many messages of condolence and sympathy we have received from our clients and colleagues in the construction industry. We are certain that there will be many lasting tributes to Jo from many directions but for our part at BDP we have concluded that we will progress the following:
• The creation of a small garden of remembrance at our Bristol studio. • The sponsorship of an annual Landscape Design prize in Jo’s memory for students at the University of Gloucestershire School of Landscape and Environment. • The creation of a Book of Remembrance to include an anthology of Jo’s work. • The dedication to Jo of a cycle ride between BDP offices, planned to take place in late spring as one of several events to mark BDP’s 50th anniversary, with the proceeds from sponsorship going to charities of Jo’s parents’ and Greg’s(Reardon, Jo’s boyfriend) choice. We will not forget Jo and we hope the above will collectively become a lasting tribute to her.”
11 Oct 2010 BCO Awards BDP won twice at this year’s British Council for Offices Awards in London. The fit-out for PricewaterhouseCoopers at 141 Bothwell Street, Glasgow was national winner of the Fit-out of Workplace Award, and West Lothian Civic Centre, Livingston was winner of the National Innovation Award. Presented by actor and trained designer Ronni Ancona, the awards are considered to be one of the most prestigious events in the corporate real estate calendar attracting over 1,000 key players in the office industry sector.
Of the PwC project the judges said: “This year’s national winner of the Fit-out of Workplace Award is a quality fit-out that betrays no signs of opulence or financial exuberance and outstanding value for money.
Fundamental to any successful fit-out is the new environment’s ability to contribute to the well-being and productivity of the workforce. It was clear to the judges that BDP’s fit-out fully met these criteria. PwCs’ fit-out illustrates a keen understanding of its corporate and staff needs and displays its sophistication as a client. The accurate delivery of the client’s brief by the professional team has brought the entire project together.”
Awarding West Lothian Civic Centre the National Innovation Award, the judges said: “This new home for public sector services in West Lothian accomplishes two significant achievements: providing an impressive and aesthetically pleasing building that betrays none of the traditional dourness or conformity of the customary public sector edifice, and innovatively combining a number of hitherto separate public services in one dynamic modern and efficient building.” All entries are considered automatically for the Innovation Award as part of the assessment process with the regional judges nominating entries from their region to be put forward.

STATE OF AFFAIRS
Exposed: Secrets Behind Victoria’s Police State
OCTOBER 4, 2021NO COMMENTS
Exposed: Secrets Behind Victoria’s Police State
By Melbourne National Review
In the state of Victoria, Australia, it’s becoming a little difficult to ignore the fact that some of the harshest virus lock-down measures in the world are being implemented for some of the lowest case numbers and fatalities in that very same world, and that it’s all being enforced by an all to often violent, and sometimes mysterious state police force.
While it goes without saying that elderly lives matter, do a daily handful of elderly deaths really warrant the shutdown of one of Australia’s busiest cities?
Clearly something is rotten in the State of Victoria.
What is the Strong Cities Network (SCN)?
In trying to understand why Australia, and Victoria in particular, seem to be coming under an unusual, and unnecessarily heavy police-state, dig a little deeper, and it becomes obvious as to what’s happening.
In 2018 Victorian state Premier Daniel Andrews sold out Victoria to an initiative called the Strong Cities Network (SCN). Moreover, Melbourne, under Premier Andrews’ leadership, was host to SCN’s 2018 global summit, the same year Andrews signed over the entire state of Victoria to the globalist initiative.
So what is the Strong Cities Network? The SCN is a now five-year-old program that claims;
“The Strong Cities Network is the first ever global network of mayors, policymakers and practitioners united in building social cohesion and resilience to counter violent extremism in all its forms. “
On the surface that sounds great, right? Nobody wants to see violent extremism on the loose, however, the devil is in the details – “violent extremism” is another one of these nebulous terms that can be applied to anything, such as an uprising against tyranny, or those with the ‘wrong’ political views, such as anyone right of Stalin in 2020.
So the focus of these initiatives may appear to be countering dangerous extremism, but their definition of extremism, and their focus, is the populist right, as well as opposition to the globalist agenda. After all, we’ve seen 3 months of some very violent extremism in the States at the hands of neo-marxists, yet the SCN have been nowhere to be seen.
The SCN is governed by global NGO’s, and aims to share policing tactics and intelligence, provide oversight, and essentially establish military-level equipped privatized police forces, all of which they don’t do, according to their myth-busting PDF. The lady doth protest too much.
Victoria is the only state in Australia to have signed on thus far, as can be seen in SCN’s list of member cities. Strangely, The entire STATE of Victoria is mentioned as a member in this list of cities. Victoria is a state, and not a city.
SCN’s influence over Victoria’s police may explain the Police’s response at Melbourne’s Freedom Day Rally, wherein many police acted violently, and with a sense of impunity when beating people. Some police were dressed in black with black riot-squad like vehicles, and didn’t have the Australian police logo on their uniforms. Instead they have a rectangular patch on their backs, easily removed or changed, as it is attached with Velcro. The patches differ in colour, and seem to me to be more for the purpose of tactical identification in the field amongst the different Public Order Response Unit squads.
Victoria police are always dressed in navy blue, with the insignia on the shoulder. The sinister, black dystopian uniforms and vehicles seem to be a new addition to Australia, and they’re known as the Public Order Response Unit. These ‘black shirts’ are SCN.
There are now countless disturbing videos online of Victoria Police going inexplicably to far in their lockdown policing duties, going as far as to kick people in the head, arrest pregnant women at home, harass more pregnant women out for exercise, choking people, kicking down people’s doors, smashing car windows to drag citizens out of their cars, storming the iconic Victoria market in full riot gear, and generally behaving like a certain gang of enforcers in Germany during the 1930’s, drawing attention and serious concern globally.
Who runs the Strong Cities Network (SCN)?
So who runs the Strong Cities Network? SCN is an initiative of London-based think tank; the Institute for Strategic Dialogue (ISD) – whose mission statement is to “Power Solutions to Extremism and Polarisation” – again more vague language that can’t be quantified, but can be applied to whatever public activity they choose.
So who’s the Institute for Strategic dialogue (ISD)? From ISD’s site;
“Founded in 2006, ISD is now the leading global ‘think and do’ tank dedicated to understanding and innovating real-world responses to the rising tide of polarisation, hate and extremism of all forms. We combine anthropological research, expertise in international extremist movements and an advanced digital analysis capability that tracks hate, disinformation and extremism online, with policy advisory support and training to governments and cities around the world. We also work to empower youth and community influencers internationally through our pioneering education, technology and communications programmes.“
An archived page that has now been scrubbed from the ISD’s website makes explicit in the language that the SCN belongs to ISD.
Dig a little deeper into the Institute for Strategic Dialogue (ISD), specifically their ‘Partners and Funders‘ funding page (whole section now scrubbed – links to archived copies), and then things start to make sense; it’s a who’s who of globalists. Under the ‘Foundations‘ sub-section, you’ll find George Soros’ Open Society Foundations, under ‘NGO’s‘ you’ll find United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and those familiar with the true agenda of the totally corrupt UN will not be surprised to see them involved, and the usual suspects are lurking in the section titled ‘Private Sector‘; Facebook, Google, Twitter, Microsoft, etc.
But perhaps most disturbing for Victorians is that under the section ‘Academic Institutions‘ on the now scrubbed Partners and Funders page on ISD’s website; only 5 academic establishments are listed globally, yet two of them are Australian Universities. And listed in the ‘Governments and Intergovernmental Organisations’ section is ‘Department of Premier and Cabinet, Victoria, Australia’ – Premier Dan Andrews.
And of course George Soros is involved with his insidious Open Society Foundations, along with nefarious Big Tech, but in addition, among ‘NGO’s and Think Tanks’ on ISD’s partners page is the dubious Brookings Institute, as well as Chatham House, and the UK’s RUSI – all NGO’s with the same mission statements; to influence public debate, and counter ‘extreme dialogue’, ‘hate speech’, ‘far-right extremism’ etc – all euphemisms for anticipated dissent. Of course, trying to find any sort of definition of ‘hate speech’ or ‘extreme dialogue’ on their websites is a fruitless task, as again, the language is deliberately vague so it may be applied when needed.
The SCN riot squad never seem to be around when far-left extremism is on the loose though, such as the ongoing rioting. I’m sure a deep-dive into some of these NGOs would connect Bill & Melinda Gates and the Rockefeller Foundations everywhere. What we’re seeing is the globalists’ parallel governance network and structure at work, undermining the nation state, as they have been doing for a very long time, and as always, on the sly.
So as Australia recently discovered, the curfews and lock-downs in Victoria are not based on the Chief Health Officer’s advice, but rather Premier Andrews put them in place of his own accord.
Andrews has always been very interested in top-down authoritarian style governance – in 2016 Premier Andrews toured the New York Police Department’s ‘Real Time Crime Center‘ surveillance facility during a visit to the United States, tweeting that soon Victoria will have ‘one of our own’;
In 2017 Victoria Police were set to bring in the twenty-four hour system to Australia, with a new $15 million Monitoring and Assessment Centre, modelled on the New York center. In addition to all of this, Andrews allocated almost $600 million AUD as part of a ‘public safety package’ in the 2016-17 budget. This was in addition to the $2 billion already spent on 3,200 new police officers.
What was Andrews preparing for?
The Australian Freedom Alliance, 13/Sept, 2020;
Andrews spent $2.6 Billion of tax-payer’s money on stocking up on surveillance, riot equipment, and 3,200 extra police, then once in place he handed Victoria over to the globalists.
Do you still Stand with Dan and his absolutely remarkable Nostradamus-like foresight?
Commentator Robert Bridge drew attention in his August article; ‘Letters From Melbourne, a ‘Ghost Town Police State’ Under Brutal Covid Lockdown‘, to the fact that cities and countries that have signed on to China’s Belt & Road Initiative seem to be not only hit hardest by the virus, but all enthusiastically followed China’s instruction and embraced heavy lock-downs based on little or no scientific data. Italy would be another prime example.
Michael Spenger details China’s campaign to sell lock-down to the world in his excellent article; China’s Global Lockdown Propaganda Campaign.
Anika Stojkovski, a corporate compliance and governance consultant, based in Melbourne, wrote the following to Robert Bridge in an email;
“I sensed there was something very wrong with all this and predicted what is happening now,”…“I could tell they were lying.”
“I really think there is more to it and it is all about total control and heading towards the agenda for us all to be vaccinated… [Victorian Premier Dan] Andrews says he wants every man, woman and child vaccinated. There is no vaccine!! So will we be kept in isolation till when?”
Speaking on the medical situation in the city, Stojkovski was struck by the fact that; “all consulting rooms in hospitals are closed, and all appointments are conducted by specialists by phone.”
“This still doesn’t add up … they are not admitting to hospital for Covid unless severely ill with life threatening symptoms, while most people cannot be tested for the virus without traveling beyond the 5-kilometer point.”
Andrews has a long and close relationship with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), ensuring that it’s China who fills contracts for Victorian infrastructure and manufacturing deals, but yet he has always been very secretive about who he meets with in Beijing, and what is discussed.
Asked why the memorandum of understanding (MoU) agreement between Victoria and Beijing needed to be secret, Mr Andrews said “That’s the way all memorandums of understanding work and we’re not about the change that policy,”.
In terms of geopolitical significance, this is huge; Victoria is the only Australian state to formally sign on to China’s Belt and Road Initiative, and as far as Australia is concerned, this contradicts the position of the Federal Government to not join the BRI, as it raised serious geo-strategic concerns.
According to a report by the Australian Institute of International Affairs, the BRI Framework Agreement “places Victoria in an awkward position as Australia has formally signed onto the ‘Blue Dot Network’ with the US to assist in developing infrastructure in the Indo-Pacific region to counter the BRI.” The Blue Dot Network is perceived as a counter to China’s Belt and Road Initiative.
There is talk of the Australian Federal Government cancelling Victoria’s secretive BRI agreement, and in response, Andrews has vowed to double down on Victoria’s commitment to the BRI. At the very least, the timing of an agreement between Victoria and communist China, happening just months before the economic shutdown of Melbourne over a minuscule increase in C19 deaths, is curious.
Victorians should spend less time listening to Andrews on contact tracing, and more time on tracing the contacts of Andrews.
Project Gen V;
But what I missed in November 2017 was the exciting news announced by Premier Dan Andrews in this Facebook post (now deleted);
His post linked to an article behind a paywall that outlined project Gen V, which aims to track the lives of babies from the time they’re born until their old age to identify causes of disease and complete interventional trials and prevention of disease. And guess what; along the way they’re creating a huge database, specifically of baby’s born in Victoria between 2020 and 2021. Coincidently, another government that has accelerated collection of citizens DNA recently is The Chinese Communist Party. (Victorians – I did some digging and it appears you can opt-out of this program, but you must articulate it).
So to summarize; Dan Andrews, with his extended powers of lockdown until late 2021, is turning Victoria into a prison, along with the destroying personal freedoms and liberties, and all before your newborn baby’s foot ever touches the earth, and he stated the intention back in 2017.
For what it’s worth – Victorian police must legally provide you with name, rank, and station, in writing, when requested under the Crimes Act 1958 – SECT 456AA. If they refuse to do so, or provide false information, they are guilty of an offense.

Amazon hails record Prime Day – and says it is now the largest corporate purchaser of renewable energy
Amazon has hailed a record Prime Day, and says members of its Prime subscription scheme bought more and saved more than any previous Prime Day. During the course of the two day event shoppers bought more than 250m products, with the Fire TV Stick 4K with Alexa Voice Remote the most popular item bought.
The growth came as this year’s event took place in 20 markets, up from 19 a year earlier. Since the event was held in June, Amazon Prime has now expanded to 22 markets.
In the run up to Prime Day, shoppers spent $1.9bn (£1.4bn) with third-party sellers on the Amazon marketplace thanks to promotions. The retailer says Prime Day 2021 was the biggest two-day period ever for small and medium-sized businesses selling on its platform around the world.
The update came as the retailer reported net sales of $113.1bn (£80.99bn) in the second quarter to June 30, 27% up from $88.9bn (£63.66bn) a year earlier. Net income of $7.8bn (£5.6bn) was up from $5.2bn (£3.72bn) a year earlier.
Looking ahead, it now expects net sales to grow by between 10% and 16% to as much as $112bn (£80.2bn) in the third quarter, compared to last year, while operating income is expected to be lower than the $6.2bn (£4.4bn) it reported a year earlier, at between $2.5bn (£1.8bn) and $6bn (£4.3bn) after $1bn (£0.7bn) of Covid related costs.
The retailer, ranked Elite in RXUK Top500 research, said during the quarter that it would create more than 10,000 corporate and operations jobs in the UK, while investing £10m over three years to train up to 5,000 employees in new skills.
Amazon Fresh, the retailer’s grocery stores that feature ‘just walk out’ technology and remove the need to queue or to pay in-store now has five stores in the UK, the first having opened in March, and 15 in the US. During the quarter the technology was used on a full-size grocery store for the first time, with shoppers in Washington, US, offered the chance to skip the queue – or to queue and pay as normal.
The retailer and technology company has also added its Alexa voice assistant technology to devices from Ford cars, in a six-year deal, to Samsung fridges. In total, says Amazon, there are more than 900,000 registered developers, brands and device makers now building with Alexa.
Amazon has now opened a disaster relief hub in an Atlanta fulfilment centre stocking more than 500,000 relief supplies that can be sent out to relief organisations when natural disasters hit the US, Caribbean and Central America. In India it airlifted in medical equipment including ventilators and oxygen machines during the Covid-19 surge there, and has committed to vaccinate 1m people, including members of Amazon’s staff, sellers and family members against Covid-19. In Nepal it is working with the United Nations World Food Programme to donate supplies to Covid-19 affected communities.
Andy Jassy, chief executive of Amazon, says: “Over the past 18 months, our consumer business has been called on to deliver an unprecedented number of items, including PPE, food, and other products that helped communities around the world cope with the difficult circumstances of the pandemic. At the same time, AWS has helped so many businesses and governments maintain business continuity, and we’ve seen AWS growth reaccelerate as more companies bring forward plans to transform their businesses and move to the cloud.
“Thank you to all of our passionate, innovative, mission-driven employees around the world for continuing to stay focused on delivering for customers—I am very excited to work with you as we invent and build for the future.”
Amazon says it is now the largest corporate buyer of renewable energy in the world, with 65% of energy used in its business now sourced from renewables – and it says it is on track to raise that to 100% by 2025, five years ahead of its 2030 target. It is also a leader of The Climate Pledge, which now has 112 members who are working to reduce corporate carbon emissions. In its own business, it has added five new categories to help shoppers find more sustainable products, enabling them to buy products that are approved in areas from animal welfare to organic, safer, and renewable materials.
Industry reaction
Nigel Naylor-Smith, head of retail and hospitality at Fujitsu UK, says: “The retail sector has bounced back from the pandemic in recent months, so Amazon’s ongoing sale success – while consistent – isn’t all that surprising. What has, however, set tongues wagging is its constant innovation while the rest of the world was on pause.
“After all, the impacts of Covid-19 will be ringing in the ears of tech investors for a long time yet and Amazon will need to do more than just hold firm to attract more buy-in. While it’s quietly powered ahead through lockdown, and been a pioneer in the space for a long time before that, there’s every possibility that giants such as Amazon and Facebook could yet face some share price volatility. It’s the reason why so many tech companies are moving into new sectors now restrictions are lifted and Amazon, for the very first time, is following suit.
“But what matters now is not biting the consumer hand that fed them over lockdown. While Amazon’s ambitions to become a multi-level infrastructure where consumers can pay for goods and services using cryptocurrency could make it an even bigger success, its foundations – and vast majority of their sales – still rely on offering the typical, credit-and-cash customer the speed and convenience they can’t access offline. If they focus too much on innovating now that restrictions have eased, there’s a real chance that other retail giants will soon be biting at their heels.”
Hugh Fletcher, global head of consultancy and innovation at Wunderman Thompson Commerce, says: “Amazon’s Q2 earnings results was one of its most anticipated yet. With Prime Day, Jeff Bezos’ space flight, a multi-million pound deal with MGM, a potential cryptocurrency payment service and the return of consumer confidence in the high-street, investors will have been chomping at the bit. And for the retail marketplace that seemingly knows no bounds, its results did not fail to disappoint; with 14% of all online global spend passing through Amazon, it continues to hold the fort through its horizontal expansions, lucrative acquisitions and allyship with small businesses.
“The challenge for the second half of the year will be sustaining growth and maintaining sales as physical shopping returns and Covid-19 restrictions ease – although over one third (36%) of global consumers are still fearful of shopping in store. Amazon also has some work to do to ease concerns around its sustainable and ethical work practices – while its services continue to set the benchmark, over half of global consumers say that Amazon should pay more tax. In the UK alone, near seven in 10 (69%) consumers support the idea of Amazon paying more tax.
“Nonetheless, with more and more consumers comfortable with shopping online, and a potential second Prime day in October, Amazon will undoubtedly be a major player in retail in the second half of 2021. And while it’s hard to predict Amazon’s every next move, you can be sure they’re ten paces ahead of the rest of the chasing pack.”

So how does a Hydrovane work?
1. Air is drawn through the intake valve
2. Air is contained between the rotor and the stator wall
3. Air is compressed by decreasing volume, Oil is continually injected to cool, seal and lubricate
4. High pressure air passes into the primary oil separator
5. Remaining traces of oil are removed in a fina separator element, providing high quality air
6. System air passes through the aftercooler, removing most of the condensate
7. Oil is circulated by differential internal air pressure. It passes through an air-blast oil cooler and filter before being returned into the compressor
8. Air flow is regulated by an inbuilt modulation system
Hydrovane provides adaptable energy efficient solutions for a wide range of industries including:

Mind the gap: Kapiti’s unsustainable transport planning
Paul Callister, 4th February 2021
On the 25th of May 2019 the Kapiti Coast District Council declared a climate emergency. Given the district is very vulnerable to coastal erosion as well as flooding, this seemed a sensible move. After a period of consultation, on Thursday 28th of January 2021 the same council adopted what they called a ‘Sustainable’ Transport strategy. This was just three days before the Climate Commission released its draft advice on emission reductions.
Despite all the talk of a climate emergency, the Kapiti Coast District Council accepted a transport strategy that lacked real vision for emission reductions and is completely at odds with the proposed national carbon budgets.
It is all the more disappointing, because the Kāpiti council does understand climate: in 2019 they won a nationwide “Excellence in Climate Action” award, for reducing their own in-house emissions 76% in just 10 years, with substantial cost savings.
While very detailed planning for emission reductions would need to be set out in an activity management plan which feeds into the Long-Term Plan that Kapiti will consult on in April of this year, the transport strategy should have been driven by the climate emergency declaration and clearly set the overall direction for very rapid transport decarbonisation.
Climate change is certainly mentioned in Kapiti’s transport strategy document and having a decarbonised transport sector by 2035 is within the overall vision statement. But otherwise the strategy is largely a tick-box exercise. Where climate change is discussed it is more about significant costs associated with coastal erosion and climate change such as inland flooding rather than emission reductions.
In strategies produced by local authorities there needs to be clear year by year goals set for reductions and guidance for how decarbonisation will take place over just 14 years. In fact, some of the ideas contained in the Kapiti strategy would increase emissions. This is especially concerning given that transport is a key sector in the district in terms of emissions and these had been steadily rising. A study prepared for Greater Wellington Regional Council outlined the problem.
Emissions from transport increased between 2001 and 2019, from 142,714 tCO2e (45% of total gross emissions) to 199,773 tCO2e (57% of total gross emissions), an increase of 40%.
Road transport was found to be the highest emitting activity within Kapiti’s transport sector. Road emissions increased overall by 48% between the start and end of the measurement period. Air travel emissions jumped by 41% while marine transport emissions also trended upwards by 18%.
The report shows most people travel to work by car with very low use of buses. Equally most children are driven or drive themselves to school. Buses go every 20 minutes through most suburbs at peak times to meet the 20 minute schedule for trains but few people use them. However, the data show that trains are important. But most people drive to the ever expanding free park and ride facilities next to main stations.
The strategy also cites research that shows that many cyclists and pedestrians report feeling unsafe. This is not surprising when the regular speed surveys carried out for KCDC show a significant number of vehicles exceeding speed limits.
According to the report local vehicle traffic is forecast to increase. Unless EVs quickly become the dominant vehicle type this means a further rise in emissions. Given the slow speed of uptake of EVs and that much of the existing car fleet will still be on roads over the next decade, relying on EVs to solve the problem may be unrealistic.
In 2021, Transmission Gully is scheduled to open. Evidence throughout the world shows that building new motorways induces demand so transport emissions are likely to rise further. Meanwhile, between Waikanae and Otaki more motorway building continues. Further expressway building to north of Levin has been supported by the Kapiti mayor despite little economic justification for the project.
So how would a truly sustainable transport plan turn this growth around? As an example, research from the UK suggests that in small urban centres if local authorities support the uptake of e-bikes, especially through the provision of safe cycle networks, this can lead to big drops in car use. Most of the urban areas of Kapiti are relatively flat making it an ideal place to begin catching up with the Dutch in terms of cycling. Kapiti does have a good spine of cycleways linking townships. But much of the core network was paid for by Waka Kotahi as part of expressway building. Where they intersect with Kapiti’s urban roads many of the crossings feel unsafe for cyclists and walkers as they give cars priority. As in many towns and cities, cycle lobby groups try hard to get the council to develop better safer crossings but find it difficult to make headway.
Local Kapiti streets favour cars over bikes. While cycling is discussed in the transport strategy, there is no target for the strong modeshift to this form of travel that is needed.
Also missing from the strategy are proposals to support developing medium to high density housing close to transport hubs as well as strategies to prevent urban sprawl away from public transport links. The strategy suggests keeping good transport access to the local uneconomic airport. In fact the mayor wants taxpayer subsidies for the airport. Yet is an ideal area of land to convert to much needed housing with still plenty of room for open spaces. It is critical that we support intensification within walkable and bikeable distances of our town and city centres to meet our climate goals.
Where is the support in the strategy for fast rail to Palmerston North and from Otaki to Wellington? Or backing for a night train to Auckland to help reduce aviation emissions? How about the bold urban and street design plans with 30km speed limits on many streets that are transforming places like Ghent and the larger cities of Paris and London into biking and walking friendly centres?
Why is the concept of a 15 minute neighbourhood not explored, especially for compact settlements such as my home town of Paekakariki? The day KCDC accepted their flawed strategy the government agency ECCE promoted this idea via social media and praised the transformation of Paris.
What about congestion charges and bus lanes for new electric buses on the most overcrowded sections of roads? And parking charges rather than trying to provide additional free parking in the district? How about secondary schools charging for parking or even better no longer allowing free parking for students? Many of these ideas were suggested by local lobby groups of Low Carbon Kapiti and the Kapiti Coast Climate Action Group during the submission phase.
In response to strong submissions from the Climate Action Group, the council did agree to discuss their concerns with them. However, in light of the emission reduction targets being suggested by the climate commission, Kapiti will have to go well beyond discussion, scrap its just adopted transport strategy and go back to drawing board. This next version needs to be driven by its climate emergency declaration.
Kapiti Coast District Council will not be alone in reworking its ideas about transport. To meet the targets being suggested all New Zealand local authorities, and the communities that live in them, will need to fundamentally change their thinking about transport.
