As I shelter from the rain in Elrond on my last night on Te Waipounamu in the very same spot in which I spent my first night, I'm going to try to take the time to catch you up on my adventures!
(I might add some photos into these posts later, atm I'm waiting to receive them from friends)
SO, after taking that illegal shower and feeling very cheeky and proud about it, I drove over to Tauranga Bay with my friend. We made good use of the fact that we had two cars at our disposal, so we left one in the parking at the end of a 1.5 hour walking track, and rode together to the parking at the start. Then we enjoyed the wonderful weather as we hiked along the coast line, almost losing our hats to the incredibly strong winds every now and then! I spent a long time just standing at different spots along the edge of the cliffs, breathing in the fresh air, feeling the wind in my hair and the soft grass beneath my feet.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
At the end of the track we got to see a seal colony hanging out in the sun, with little babies playing on the rocks and swimming in the waves:
Tumblr media
That day I finally crossed the Rubicon, and booked my ferry back to Te Whanganui-a-Tara after a long time of being in two (or sometimes more) minds about the next steps in my trip. I initially planned to be back in the city in time for Halloween, which didn't end up happening. More on that later. But what's left unchanged since then is that on the 10th of November I will re-join the team at the bar I had worked at (and tremendously enjoyed) last time I was there!
The next day my friend and I headed North along the coast to Karamea. The road offered some beautiful views:
Tumblr media
We had parted with our third friend, but in the parking lot at the start of two beautiful hiking tracks up there we spotted her car. We left a note under her windshield wipers to let her know we were there, and decided to walk the larger loop track in the opposite direction. And lo and behold, after walking for about ten minutes she came walking right towards us! We had a very excited reunion, and she walked the track backwards with us, pointing out her favourite spots. We saw adorable little Toutouwai and beautiful stone formations, the Moria gate and Ōpārara arch:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After that we paid a visit to the Box Canyon cave, which was an incredibly cool experience. My favourite moment was when we had just entered the cave and other hikers (an older couple) there heard us come in, and decided to make exaggerated ghost sounds. Then they came out of the shadows and asked us if we heard the ghosts, acting all scared 😂 We walked down the cave, every now and then just turning off our torches to take in the absolute darkness. We squeezed ourselves through narrow passages, climbed up into other parts (it truly felt like a Minecraft cave system to me), and saw one of Aotearoa's largest spiders: the Nelson Cave Spider!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After that we headed back South, and hiked the Charming Creek track. This one was probably the most boring hike I've done here! A large part of the track was just a straight, flat path through the woods. It became a lot cooler though when we could walk along the train tracks of the (g)old mine carts that had been prevalent here, and ended up at a nice waterfall:

Suzuki Key Replacement: Everything You Need To Know!
Tumblr media
Is losing your Suzuki key can be frustrating? You need the key to start your Suzuki vehicle and drive it. What do you do if you lose your Suzuki key or it stops working? You will need to get a replacement Suzuki key made. Here we give all the information that you need to know.
What is a Suzuki Key?
A Suzuki key has special codes in it. These codes match the codes in your Suzuki vehicle. When you put the Suzuki key in the ignition and turn it, the codes match. This allows the Suzuki vehicle to start. Suzuki keys have electronic chips and codes. This is why you cannot use just any key to start a Suzuki. It must be a key made for Suzuki vehicles.
How Can You Get a Replacement Suzuki Key?
If you need a replacement Suzuki key made, you have a few options:
●     Locksmith
You can go to a locksmith to have them make you a new Suzuki key. They have machines that can program new keys to match your Suzuki vehicle. This is usually the fastest way to get a new working key. But locksmiths usually charge the most money for making replacement keys.
●     Suzuki Dealer
You can also go to an authorized Suzuki dealer's service department. They have the tools and software needed to program new Suzuki keys for your specific vehicle. They can make sure the new key has all the right chips and codes for your Suzuki. A dealer might charge less than a locksmith.
●     Some Auto Stores
A few advanced auto parts stores offer key replacement services. They can program new keys for various vehicle models. However, their capabilities are often limited compared to locksmiths and dealers. They may only be able to make basic keys without programming. So check their services first before relying on just any auto store for a replacement Suzuki key.
How Much Does A Replacement Suzuki Key Cost?
A replacement Suzuki key that must be electronically programmed and cut can cost between $50-$350 or more from a professional. The cost can vary depending on:
●     Whether it is a basic key or has remote fobs/transmitters
●     How much programming is required
●     If any special diagnosis or decoding is needed
●     How many keys do you need to be made
●     Whether you go to a locksmith, dealer or auto shop
Suzuki keys have built-in electronics that require special programming to replace. While replacing a lost or damaged key is inconvenient, a professional locksmith or Suzuki dealer has the tools to cut and program new keys to match your Suzuki vehicle.

Rail tourism: Please KiwiRail leave it to the rail enthusiasts
Paul Callister, 3rd May 2022
For a while KiwiRail looked like it was going to ditch long distance trains and start offering tourist rail excursions. Now it has announced it is bringing back the Northern Explorer and Coastal Pacific trains in September 2022. But with fares of $219 per person for an Auckland to Wellington trip, these services are unaffordable for ordinary New Zealand families or young people. They are aimed at tourists, presumably mainly overseas tourists.
Why does KiwiRail want to be a tourism operator? In doing so, it is competing with existing rail excursions offered by railway enthusiasts in many parts of New Zealand. These excursions attract both local and international tourists and are important for bringing in the money needed for restoration projects.
The many rail enthusiasts throughout New Zealand have a nostalgia for the trains that once ran on our networks. It is also a nostalgia for a once thriving local train building industry.
In my own hometown of Paekākāriki, there is Steam Incorporated. Since the 1970s, Steam Incorporated has brought together a large collection of locomotives and passenger carriages. These include seven steam engines, four main line diesel engines, and carriages from various periods of rail travel. Steam locomotives include the World War I Memorial Locomotive ‘Passchendaele’. This locomotive, designed by New Zealand Railways, was built in 1915, and only withdrawn from service in 1967. Following restoration, it is now certified for operation on the national rail network.
Further south on the main trunk line at Plimmerton is Mainline Steam. It too has a number of steam and diesel engines, as well as reconditioned carriages. It is currently developing a new depot at Mercer, south of Auckland.
Not far away in the Hutt Valley is the Silver Stream Railway. In 1967, the Wellington branch of the New Zealand Railway and Locomotive Society (which changed its name to Silver Stream Railway Incorporated in 1983) began a collection of locomotives and rolling stock.
Across the Remutuka Range, in the northern Wairarapa, there is the Pahiatua Railcar Society. Once, New Zealand built trains. These included unique railcars that ran along regional rail networks. Six 'Standards' were built in the NZR Hutt Workshops in 1938 and 1939, each with a semi-streamlined design featuring slanting ends. Each car had two compartments, the larger with 36 seats (second class) and the smaller with 12 seats (first class) or 16 seats (second class). The first two railcars were initially first and second class but, later, became second-class only.
In December 1972, three Silver Fern Railcars, built overseas, entered service on the Wellington to Auckland daylight run. Two decades later, in 1992, the 'Ferns' were used on two new services; Auckland to Rotorua and Auckland to Tauranga. These tourist-oriented services lasted until 2001.
These are just some of the rail organisations in the lower North Island that are restoring former New Zealand Railways trains. Many other regions are also doing similar things. For example, in 1970, Auckland’s Glenbrook Vintage Railway was founded to preserve, rebuild, and operate the old Waiuku Branch Railway between Glenbrook and Waiuku.
Not only do volunteer groups within these organisations preserve New Zealand’s rail heritage, most also run rail heritage excursions. Popular trips in the central North Island include the Raurimu Spiral and, in the lower North Island, through the Manawatū Gorge. These excursions are important fund raisers, especially for rail enterprises in small towns such as Pahiatua. While they focus on attracting locals, international rail aficionados often join the outings.
In the South Island, Dunedin Railways offers “world class train trips’. Best known is their ‘Inlander’ service which, prior to Covid-19, ran up the Taieri River Gorge. The trip targeted the international tourist market.
New Zealand could become much better known for its rail-based tourism. But it does not need KiwiRail to start competing. Like the highly successful National Cycleway Network, there could be heritage rail experiences across all regions where tracks still exist. The foundations for this are already in place.
But to decarbonise our transport sector we also need efficient, fast, affordable and frequent regional rail. Rail enthusiasts can celebrate the past. KiwiRail should be looking to the future and concentrate on rebuilding its long-distance train network.

What Should You Do Next If You Have Lost Or Damaged Your Honda Car Key
Tumblr media
Most of us drive keyless entry-equipped modern cars nowadays. Ever considered what you would do if you misplaced your car key? There are instances where you can mistakenly leave your car somewhere and then discover that you are no longer able to access it. Well, faults and errors are a natural part of life, and practically every problem we encounter has a potential solution. Here is what you need to do if you've misplaced your car keys:
Traditional Keys:
You can easily get a replacement key if you ever lose your conventional car key by calling a locksmith. In some circumstances, though, you might have to purchase a new ignition lock cylinder and key from the automobile manufacturer if your vehicle won't accept the key the locksmith created. The majority of the time, though, this doesn't happen because old cars and their keys are entirely mechanical.
Transponder Keys:
An embedded chip in the transponder key informs the engine control unit (ECU) that the correct key is being used and permits it to start the engine. Although a transponder key is a more modern version of a classic key, you can still call a locksmith who is knowledgeable about these keys if you ever lose your transponder. They have the correct key blanks and transponder chips that can be programmed into your cars immobiliser system.
Key With Fob:
If you have a key with an external fob and lose the fob, you can still get into your car by using the key. You can also get in touch with a locksmith if you lose the key. In the worst case scenario, if you lose both the fob and the key, a locksmith can still help by cutting new keys to suit the locks and pairing a new remote in.
Smart Key:
So this is the most modern type of car key available as of now in 2023. In today's world, almost all cars have keyless entry and push-button start. Just to let you know, with our increased reliance on electronics and technology involved to be able to communicate, reset and program in new smart keys into the car, this can be done but compared to older keys there are normally higher costs involvednil if you ever lose this key, but is still cheaper then going the dealerships.
Keys4Cars is your one-stop solution if you are looking for reliable Honda Key replacement. We specialise in replacing Honda transponder keys and remotes for All Honda cars being driven on the roads. Call us first if you've misplaced your Honda's remote fob. We have some of the most cutting-edge programming technologies for Honda car keys. Anywhere in the Tauranga & Bay of Plenty region, we can provide a brand-new replacement Honda transponder key to fit your car. For emergency Honda key replacement, call us at ( 0800 288 653 )!

He played the center position for the Bay of Plenty provincial team, the Chiefs in Super Rugby, and for the New Zealand Maori international team, the Māori All Blacks.  The shattered wife of the Maori All Blacks star has shared a heartbreaking tribute hours after she tragically died in a car accident. Upon leaving school, Wainui was contracted by the Taranaki Rugby Football Union. In his first year out of school, he was a part of Taranaki's 2014 national provincial championship squad. He was spotted by coach Colin Cooper and had signed with Taranaki at just 18-years-old after an impressive season, not only for his New Plymouth Old Boys club but for the Chiefs development side also. Wainui made his debut for Taranaki in the 2014 ITM Cup competition, coming on as a replacement against Waikato. In 2015 he was signed by the Super Rugby franchise the Crusaders after impressing in the center and wing position for Taranaki. Wainui made his debut for the Crusaders in round one of the 2016 Super Rugby competition, starting in the outside center position against the Chiefs.
Paige Wainui & Sean Wainui
Wainui, who is survived by his wife Paige and two children, had joined the Bay of Plenty this season.
Sean Wainui Cause of Death
October 18, 2021, McLaren Falls, Lower Kaimai, New Zealand. The torrent of tributes continues for 25-year-old Super Rugby star Sean Wainui, who died in a freak accident near Tauranga in New Zealand's Bay of Plenty region on Monday. He leaves behind a devastated wife, Paige, and two young children: his 2-year-old son Kawariki and his stepdaughter Arabia. The couple celebrated their first wedding anniversary just six weeks ago. Wainui's grieving wife broke her silence Monday night when she shared a heartwarming photo and heartbreaking tribute on her Instagram stories. She posted a photo grabbing her late husband's arm, showing off his signature tattoo and wedding ring. 'I'm broken. I am here honey. Always and forever, ”she captioned the photo, along with three broken heart emojis. The former New Zealand Under-20 representative played 53 Super Rugby matches for the Crusaders and the current club, the Chiefs. Wainui made Super Rugby history in June by becoming the first player to score five tries in a match in a Trans-Tasman clash against the NSW Waratahs. He also represented the Maori All Blacks 10 times. His Super Rugby club led the rush of tributes, as Wainui was remembered as a passionate, hardworking and proud Maori and an exceptional player. "He embodied everything you could ask for in a player," Chiefs and Maori All Blacks coach Clayton McMillan said. He was an influential member of the teams he has been a part of, and we will miss his presence. Our condolences to Paige, Kawariki, and Arahia and their broader whānau at this difficult time. We offer all our support together with our players and staff. " Wainui had been a fan favorite since joining the Chiefs in 2018. New Zealand women's rugby star Stacey Fluhler also paid tribute. "I still cannot understand the news that we all woke up today on this side of the world," posted the Olympic gold medalist. 'You have shaken the nation and the entire New Zealand rugby community and that is due to the unforgettable presence you gifted us all when you were around. 'So thank you for your mana and for always being your true self, no matter who was around. Thank you for the passion you gave to our game, for your absolute love for our beautiful Maori culture, and for the inspiration you gave to everyone who saw you out there. You may be gone now, but you certainly haven't forgotten and your legacy will live on forever. New Zealand Rugby boss Mark Robinson described the tragedy as a dark day for the code. He urged the media to give the Wainui family "room to cry as we all reflect on a young life that has ended too soon." "We know that Sean's death will be deeply felt by everyone involved in rugby, particularly his Bay of Plenty and Chiefs teammates and we share his grief and shock," said Robinson. A statement from the All Blacks read: 'We are heartbroken right now. Sean, you were an inspiration and you will never forget it. We extend all our strength and aroha to your friends and whānau. Former Kiwi rugby international Sonny Bill Williams also expressed surprise. "My thoughts are with the Sean Wainuis family," he wrote on Twitter. Especially his wife and young son. Although I didn't play alongside him, I could always feel his mana colliding with him as his opposition. ' Wainui and his wife Paige celebrated their first anniversary just six weeks ago. A year of marriage with my love. I love you more and more every day. I toast for another 100 ', he captioned the snapshots of his big day. Australian-born New Zealand artist Stan Walker posted a photo of Wainui's wedding with a moving tribute to the rugby star. “We feel completely devastated for your brother… Absolutely devastating for my brother… You are loved by so many… My brother's biggest heart… Wallabies star Quade Cooper posted a tribute saying the world had lost "an amazing human." My heart goes out to Sean Wainui's whanau. I lost my words because only a few months ago I was talking to him at the gym in tauranga, "Cooper wrote. 'Prayers for his wife and young family.' I can't put into words how much it hurts. He always said publicly that Sean deserves everything he gets because he works so hard to get it. But you don't deserve this. 'That first day back at the Chiefs headquarters next season it's going to hurt to go in and not see you there brother. BREAK.' His old club, the Crusaders, joined those paying tribute to Wainui. "We are deeply saddened to hear the news of the passing of Sean Wainui Crusader # 189, Sean will always be a beloved member of our club," the Crusaders posted on their Twitter account. I am very sorry for your partner. He also has a young one. It's terrible for his whole family, ”coach Neil Barnes said of Wainui's passing, pictured above with his partner Paige. Wainui was born in Whatatutu near Gisborne and raised in Auckland. He was captain of his school team at Takapuna Grammar School before debuting with Taranaki in 2014 while he was still a teenager. Taranaki's current coach, Neil Barnes, told the New Zealand Herald that Wainui was one of the hardest-working and fittest players he had ever seen. 'He's a good person, so this is tragic. He is a good family and community man. I am very sorry for your partner. He also has a young one. It is terrible for his whole family. ' In February this year, a video of Wainui teaching her eight-month-old son how to do the haka went viral.
Investigation
'They are my husband and our son doing the haka together. Bonding between father and son. It's a Maori haka called ka mate, 'explained Wainui's partner, Paige. Police investigations into the fatal accident continue. "Police were notified that a car had crashed into a tree around 7:50 am," a statement read. 'The sole occupant of the vehicle died at the scene. "The Serious Accident Unit attended the scene and investigations into the circumstances of the accident are ongoing."

Day 30 | Motueka –> Franz Josef: Seals, pancake rocks and glowworms were our chosen pitstops to break up a loooooong 7 hour drive from Motueka over to Tauranga Bay and down the West Coast of NZ to Franz Josef. Especially once we made it onto Haast Pass (the road down the West Coast), the scenery was stunning. That, combined with the audiobook version of Shantaram pumping from the campervan speakers, made the stints of driving pass somewhat faster than we had expected!
Three hours of driving from Motueka took us to Tauranga Bay (on the West Coast) for a small walk out to visit the seal colony that lives there. We managed to see a few lil seals chullin’ on the rocks before heading back to the campervan to begin the drive down the coast.
Pitstop #2 came only about one hour after Tauranga Bay: the Pancake Rocks. A path up from the parking site took us in a loop around of the coastal park. The thinly layered rocks were pretty strange, but our favourite part of the loop was the surge pool (see gif) that turns into a kind of blowhole when the winds are strong.
Three more hours in the car delivered us in Franz Josef. Any guesses where we stayed..? Yep, the Franz Josef Top 10 Holiday Park. Quick meal prep yielded 2x Mexican Buddha Bowls for dinner and 2x Mexican Buddha Bowls for dinner the following day!
At about 9pm we got back into the campervan and turned on the engine to head out to our final adventure of the day: the Terrace Walk. We parked up in the small two-bay parking just off the main road, put on our head torches and ventured up a narrow gravel path with trees looming on either side. In the pitch darkness it was SPOOKY. After 15 minutes of walking, we reached the end of the path and switched off our headtorches. It was a tense few minutes while are eyes adjusted to the darkness, but as dark outlines began to form we saw small lights shimmering around us... GLOWWORMS. Bottom left hand picture is the iPhone 7 interpretation of glowworms in the darkness. While impossible to capture, it was magical. As we were returning down the creepy path to the campervan, a possum started to follow us. Latent tenseness developed into fully fledged creeped-the-****-out (for Claire anyway...). We walked pretty damn fast after that, slammed the campervan doors behind us and returned quickly to the campsite for some sleep!

In memory
Pausing to grieve and give thanks
Tumblr media
A lovely blog post by my sister Chris has inspired me to write this one. We were both pottering away on a number of drafts for our different blogs when the Christchurch mosque shootings stopped us all in our tracks on March 15. To quote Chris, the grief has been palpable. There was also a sense of a nation holding its breath. What else was to come? Where to from here? And for each one of us not directly affected, how do you return to the daily concerns that can feel so trivial in comparison? I’d like to follow Chris’s example and pause here to remember and to reflect.
Tumblr media
Tauranga’s mosque is in 18th Ave, an easy walk from our home in 11th Ave. I happened to know where it is because, feeling terribly homesick for Wellington’s multicultural vibe, I’d gone looking for it in my first few weeks here. The mosque was not easy to find, inconspicuous as it was on its peaceful suburban street corner. It’s not inconspicuous now.
The first of the flax fronds that now adorn the entire fence had only just appeared when Rod and I first went to pay our respects the morning after the shooting. The flowers were fresh and beautiful. They were beginning to create a beautiful space. And even though there were heavily armed police officers parked across the road, with Armed Defenders Squad cars regularly arriving to check in, it still felt like an incredibly peaceful place.
In the spite of our distress - mirrored on every face as ever more people arrived carrying flowers while Rod and I stood there - something inside me was responding to that peace and to the love that was so tangible in the reactions of everyone who was drawn to the mosque.  I’ve returned several times and each time I have a sense, not only of that amazing aroha, but also of sending roots down into the very ground, making me feel more connected to Tauranga than just about anything else that has happened here.
This was a deeply personal reaction that took me by surprise, but I can only feel grateful. It’s such a cliché that even in the face of terrible tragedy, other lives inexorably carry on. However, March 15 and what happened afterwards has woven itself into, not only the story of our time here in Tuaranga, but also the story of how Tauranga is gradually becoming home.
Tumblr media
We were drawn in our thousands to our local mosques over the following days. Like hundreds of other Tauranga folk, I headed back to 18th Ave on the Friday afternoon after the shootings, to join in the “chain of love”. Like the majority of other Tauranga women who went, I wore a headscarf. The decision to wear one was not something I had to think about for very long. Tossing a scarf round my head on a Wellington winter’s day is something I’ve been pretty comfortable doing for decades. Of course, walking through the streets of Tauranga wearing one on a summer’s day proved to be a different experience altogether. One of the perks of becoming a woman of a certain age has been the comfort of feeling largely inconspicuous out in public. Suddenly feeling incredibly conspicuous was pretty uncomfortable - until I drew close to the mosque. There I was in the company of an extraordinary mix of people, all of whom felt like friends.
Tumblr media
The words “just extraordinary” kept playing in my head. It felt both a privilege and a precious gift that I had time and space in my life to be there. The forecourt was packed with both Muslims and non-Muslims – and a row of Harley Davidsons parked along the perimeter wall.  Patched gang members from different gangs mingled with people like me who’d never ordinarily be anywhere near them. The strangers I chatted with included a high school teacher, an early childhood lecturer, a mother of 2 pre-schoolers, 2 heavily tattooed women there with their gangs, a Muslim woman I’d met at a vigil during the week, an armed Sikh policeman. The visibly armed police presence was so very jarring. A friend who’s been working in Christchurch tells me that many police officers are extremely tense, convinced the threat level is still high. Here in Tauranga, where that tension was less visible, people were strolling up and chatting with them, posing for selfies even. And lest this sound all quite jolly, the underlying anger heard so clearly in the Tauranga boy’s college haka, the grief that kept breaking through as people choked up while they were speaking, the profound respect that came through in the 2 minutes’ silence when truly all that could be heard were tuis in the trees - these were all powerfully, palpably, present.
Tumblr media
Equally powerful were the symbols of love and compassion. Including a small, very touching, gesture of a 1-year old: intrigued by my tears during the 2 minutes of silence, he solemnly offered me his dummy for comfort. The smile it brought felt like hope.
Tumblr media
Earlier that incredibly sad week, I had the chance to take part in a vigil organised by my yoga teacher.  Stephanie, and a florist who spontaneously arrived with floral arrangements and 50 wreathes, turned Hart Street platform over at the Mount into a beautiful gathering space. The vigil had been advertised as “from dusk to moonrise”, which proved to be just perfect. The gentle weather, the gorgeous fade of sea and sky from blue through gentle pink to black, the absolutely spectacular appearance of a glowing red full moon over the ocean, the Southern Cross brilliantly clear overhead - they were all perfect. In another unexpected gift, it felt like a sacred space, a time and place where even those of us who don’t belong to a faith could feel that our tears and our hopes, both spoken and silent, could be could be heard and felt.
It was my privilege to help Stephanie out on the day, and I had the chance to speak if I wanted. I chose not to, something I find myself regretting a bit.  Hindsight, huh? If I had spoken, I might have expressed some of the hope that filled my heart that beautiful night:
We know that we will never forget the fact of the massacre. We will most likely always be able to recall the afternoon the news unfolded and the enormity of what had happened became apparent. We will remember THEM, the 50 people who lost their lives as they gathered in their sacred spaces. May we also always remember US. The shock, grief and rage we felt. The aroha that drew us to the mosques with our flowers, candles and prayers, that inspired us to organise and attend vigils, that manifested itself in those “chains of love”, that was demonstrated in the food donated and the millions of dollars collected online. May we remember who we were, both as individuals and as united communities that stood together. We saw the best of ourselves as a nation - may it not all fade away with the changing news cycles. May lasting good come out of the evil.
Tumblr media
Back at the mosque, the crowds have disappeared but people still come to visit, passers-by still pause, a patrol car with armed police keeps watch at every prayer time. The flowers are fading, the wind has ripped some of the messages, the rain has washed away many of the words. New messages still appear. They include those from the Muslim community, replying with words of peace and gratitude.
Tumblr media
With love, respect, grief and gratitude. May we remember. Arohanui.

18/4 Hasan part the third Having done the important bits of the thermal parks and the rafting, we decided to head somewhere I'd never been, but had heard about: the big port city of Tauranga, which is adjacent to the small beach town of Mount Mangonui (it is kind of hard to tell where one ends and the other begins). We were aiming for a beach night, so we checked into our bnb and drove right out again to Mangonui. The beach was long an beautiful, but we thought we'd have a go at climbing the hill and see if we could see White Island (an island off the coast that is also NZ's most active volcano). Sunset from the top of the hill was very pretty, and we did not make it to the beach before dark! The next day beaches were still the priority. We headed towards the coromandel, although we were limited on time since we had to get the hire car back by 5 and get Hasan to the airport by 7 so we didn't make it to the famous beaches (cathedral cove and hot water beach) but we did visit two very different beaches. One was on the east coast, being hit by the Pacific Ocean. These were not the fun, playing in the surf kind of waves, they were smashing your face repeatedly into the sand waves. We gave up on that one and crossed to the other side of the peninsular where the land formed a natural harbour and the sea was as still as a lake and got a proper swim, which washed all the sand off. Then it was a quick hop back to Auckland, slowed down by the weekend traffic, and we got the car returned, a quick bite of Mexican food and then Hasan was off to the airport and home! As far as road trips, it was really awesome. It made me realise how much better I know NZ now than when Max came over last year. I had a lot more sense of where to go, what was good to do, but we also managed to fit in a whole load of things that were new to me. All in all, a success! And proof that I am the greatest tour guide and you should all come out to visit ;)
