“Captain Storm! More of them, coming from the canals!”
The pirates drew their weapons and shouted taunts down at the merfolk emerging from the water. The River Heralds held formation, not falling for the bait, and stopped while still waist-high in the canal. One of the shamans waded past his fellows’ spears of sparkling jade, and began berating the buccaneers.
“Orazca is not a mere treasure chest, ready for you to plunder. It is a source of culture, of magic! How dare you disrespect this city so!”
Captain Lannery Storm rolled her eyes, presumably aimed at the noble speech. “You sure love doing that, huh?” she groaned theatrically.
“What, protesting your heinous actions?” the shaman asked proudly.
“Huh? Oh, no, I meant popping out of the water.”
“Oh.” The shaman glanced over his shoulder at the canal he and his group had traversed. “Well, we are merfolk, after all.”
Lannery rolled her eyes. “I’m just saying, you lot sure have been doing that a…a lot…Anyways, heh, you sure you didn’t invade alongside everyone else just to have more water to jump out of?”
“Well, I-I never!” the shaman huffed defensively. “What an absurd accusation! As well as an incredibly petty thing to invade over!”
Lannery shrugged. “Well, you clearly don’t use gold, just from looking at you. And I feel like water breathing is a pretty earth-shattering power already. So, why else exactly would you-”
“E-Enough!” cried the shaman. “We will not stand here and listen to you mock us any longer!”
The merfolk surged forward. Lannery raised her hand to call for a charge of her own, but paused at the last second. She grinned back at her fellow pirates.
“So,” she muttered, “we’re all thinking that, they totally just want to jump out of the water, right?”
The buccaneers all cheered. Satisfied, Lannery brought down her hand, and charged alongside her crew to meet the River Heralds.
[In peacetime, the River Heralds often have contests among themselves to see who can surface the most gracefully. While their forces invading Orazca indeed didn’t want the other factions to have the magical MacGuffin Immortal Sun, a lot of them were also really anticipating all the new bodies of water they could use! And a few of those…got their priorities switched around.]

Kari Zev Deck Tech -- Ladies Breaking Things
You love her and her little monkey friend. And swinging in for three is all well and good but haven’t you always felt you could get more value? Or at least that you could get a whole lot sillier with the skyship raider? Good, cause you can.
This is a sac fodder build that sparked from the idea of trying to get a little more service from the faithful if foolish Ragavan. Things fired off by considering how we could get more out of the little monkey, and then what else we could grab value from.
Makeshift Munitions was my go to. Swing in for damage, then after combat damage but before the end of combat trigger resolves to exile Ragavan, sacrifice him to Makeshift Munitions for another bit of damage. Or if he’s blocked, you could always sacrifice him before combat damage if that point of damage would be more useful elsewhere. Dark-Dweller Oracle can also turk the monkey into additional value. But if we’re looking at sac fodder and things to do with it in red, we can do a lot more.
We’ve got a healthy selection of potential sac fodder or stuff that will make sac fodder: Treasure Keeper, Captain Lannery Storm, Wily Goblin, Brazen Freebooter, Gleaming Barrier, Treasure Map, Warcry Phoenix, Implement of Conbustion, Squee, the Immortal, Rekindling Phoenix, Tilonalli’s Summoner, Mishra’s Self-Replicator, Servo Schematic, Whirlermaker, and Golden Guardian are all things we might sacrifice or which will make things to be sacrificed.
The best part about treasure tokens is that they can be sacrificed to most of our effects but they can also be used to pay mana costs and ramp into better spells or get more activations on things like Makeshift Munitions.
Since we’ll have a lot of artifacts, I’m also tossing in Orcish Vandal, Embraal Gear-Smasher, and Pia Nalaar as sac outlets. And most often our sacrifices are being turned into damage right at our opponent’s face. Siege-Gang Commander and Skirk Prospector also do good work even though we don’t really have a whole lot of goblins in this deck.
That covers the main strategy for this Kari Zev deck; pillage and burn. Aside from that, we’ll flesh things out by fueling us into late game when we need to and trying to pull even more value from the sac strategy. I want Pia’s Revolution, Conqueror’s Galleon, Decoction Module, Guardians of Koilos, Scrap Trawler, Inventor’s Apprentice, Chandra, Torch of Defiance, Pirate’s Pillage, and even Karn, Scion of Urza.
Lastly we’ll pack the best red removal we can find; Banfire, Abrade, Repeating Barrage, Insult // Injury, Lightning Strike, Shock, and Hour of Devastation to keep the board clear of threats. Our opponent plays something that those removal spells can’t handle? Well you just have to burn their faces faster. Oh, or pull out Captivating Crew, steal the thing, then sac it to Makeshift Munitions before they get it back.
Toss in 20 mountains and start raiding! I’ll be the first to tell you it’s a little janky, but I never fail to have fun with it. Oh, and if you don’t have them already, you can cut down the cost of building this deck by about $70 just from dropping the two planeswalkers and Rekindling Phoenix. Toss in three more Mountains and you’ll still have fun!

Okay so
I’m curious because this deck I made before the changes worked pretty well. I’m curious if any vets on tumblr can help an amateur deck builder out with some tips. Have we ever seen the Khan or Alara tri colors with the focal color NOT being say, Black for Grixis? I'll use Captain Lannery Storm as an example: is she BLACK/red/blue purely because she is Grixis color pie?
I would say we see it more obviously in the Wedges than the Shards.
The Khans of Tarkir Wedges were deliberately off-center. For instance, the Jeskai were centered in blue, while Numot, the Devastator is centered in red.
It’s less obvious in Shards because the central color is an ally of the other two rather than an enemy.
From a purely flavorful perspective, I would also argue that Becket Brass is centered in blue or red, rather than black.

Jodah Superfriends Brawl Draft 1
List under the cut
This needs a lot of work. Definitely some better self milling/filtering options available, way too many ‘walkers in here and not enough support especially considering my game plane is to cast the singleton legendary sorcery to bring all my ‘walkers back from the grave so I need ways to find that and/or get it from the grave to cast.
Oh and this is almost only using cards currently in Standard since that’s all you can search Gatherer for. I did seek out a few specific Dominaria cards but it will need more updates once that actually drops. The mana base is the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever constructed. Every dual land that taps for R or U and any other color (you’ll notice the 17 other spells are almost entirely red blue looters and treasure makers).

MTG Flash Fan Fic - Rigging Runner
The captain sat studying their last course on a tattered boar skin map, one that had grown increasingly worn as orders and markers over the years had been placed and moved about. Much of it was faded and scratched out, but his eyes bore down on three small wooden figures signifying ships. Three lost ships all clumped in an area sixty miles off the cost of Ixalan. The first was a merchant vessel transporting goods pillaged from the mainland, on its way to a Brazen Coalition checkpoint. The second was a small frigate, a quick mercenary ship not built to withstand a drawn out battle, but one designed for speedy strikes and retreats. Its job was to scout the area, make a rescue if possible (the loot was priority) and get out. It had been a week since anyone had heard word from either crew. Finally the captain focused his attention on the third wooden figurine. Unlike the other two, this one was marked with red. Vampires.
Scouts had seen the vampire ship make sail in the general direction, but there was no word of a change in its course or it ever having reached a destination. All three ships had been lost at sea, no word of survivors or an explanation. The captain scratched at his scalp under his now skewed hat and curled his lips at the prospect of yet another fictitious curse wandering the lips of the locals. What he did not need was another patch of ocean upsetting the Coalition’s already superstitious trade lines across the ocean. It was his duty to clear the air once and for all. He could not fail where the others had, but the thought of the undead ship sent shivers down his spine. A glimmer of hope would soon arrive.
“Captain Nate! Life boat starboard!” The siren lookout wailed.
The captain leapt from his seat nearly knocking the wooden ships across the room and stormed out the galley and burst through the door. Half his crew was already throwing lines down to the drifting boat. He rushed across the deck and peered overboard. His hopes were dashed almost immediately. Below, climbing one of the lines, was a theatrically dressed animal – a monkey of some description, although altogether more gangly looking.
“He’s wearing the captain’s hat of the frigate we sent last week, captain.” First Officer Bracker muttered. “Probably a pet…”
The captain sighed, and offered out a hand to the castaway. It looked altogether well about its wits, and even had a makeshift hooked sword bound around its waist. Its eyes darted about, unsure of the captain and crew’s intentions. It let out a gentle snort of air and took the captain’s hand and allowed itself to be led away to his cabin.
“Captain?”
The captain stopped and turned, animal in tow which was now peering widely at the first office.
“Yes Bracker?”
“Do you think it was the invaders from Torrezon? Will… Will we be setting upon vampires?”
“We’ll find out in a few miles, a life boat can’t have drifted far in these currents. It’s either vampires, or whatever that vessel was transporting from Ixalan got out.” The captain resumed his escort.
“Prepare the men for a fight.” He muttered.
“Aye captain!”
***
The crew had immediately set to powdering the guns and stocking up the canons. Each man was armed with a musket and sabre; half a dozen others were carrying rope and hooks for boarding. A man needed a certain kind of madness to board a vampire ship willingly.
The captain had spent the last few hours seeing to his maps, rolling over the possibilities in his mind. All the while the creature in the hat had simply sat on the far table, gazing out the window to an endless horizon of water. It had quickly accepted a few bananas and dried bread, but resumed its watch over nothing. That was when it grew restless, it began huffing and grumbling and shifting on the spot. The captain looked out above the creature and spotted a ship - sails and rudder stuck on hard left, endlessly circling a spot of ocean amongst the wrecks of three other ships.
“Bracker!” He shouted. “Ship! Three miles Port!”
Footsteps stomped beyond the door and the men began barking orders at one another. Ignoring the small animal still pacing in his room, the captain ran out the door to join his crew, and headed immediately for the boat wheel.
“Lookout, I need eyes on movement. Bracker, set the port guns at twelve degrees!”
“Port guns, twelves degrees. NOW!” Bracker shouted across at the deck hands.
It was a flurry of orders and activity as they sailed closer to the out of control ship, when finally the ship’s lookout relayed some jarring information.
“Captain, the ship is… abandoned. There are bodies in the water, human and vampire. There are more of those, creature things too.”
The crew stopped silent. The captain’s eyes narrowed, his brain trying to make sense of the situation.
“Wait… captain. There’s another-” The siren’s voice was cut off as a single canon went off on the careening ship, blowing the lookout off his perch and into the water.
The drifting ship turned towards them. The captain seized a spyglass and focused closely on the ship’s deck. He scanned across, not a single member of crew in sight. Then his eyes drifted off towards the person holding the wheel. Only it wasn’t a person. It was one of those damned creatures, cutlass in hand, a pirate’s waistcoat misbuttoned across its chest.
“Bracker… the creature. Where is it?” The captain swallowed. His face was dull with realisation that had come too late.
“Why sir?” his first officer was practically pleading with him.
“They’re not damned monkeys. We were told about these months ago by Lannery. They’re goblins.”
“ALL CANONS F-”
“BANANAS.” A screeching voice shouted across to the incoming ship.
The crews’ eyes stretched upward to the sails, the goblin with the captain’s hat was now leaping across the wooden poles, slashing through the ropes as it went.
“BIG GUNS AND BANANAS.” It shouted once more as the oncoming ship crashed through the side of the vessel.
Dozens of goblins burst out of the centre hold of the enemy ship like a wave of locusts, sweeping across Captain Nate’s ship, slashing blindly in their wake felling friend and foe alike. There was no order, no plan, only to destroy for the sake of destruction.
A goblin leapt onto Captain Nate’s shoulders, a shirt sleeve tightly stretched around its waist like a skirt and an eye patch strapped across its belly button.
“THE HAT IS MINE!”

I was building this Captain Lannery Storm Commander deck, just making it a general Red Commander deck, but then I realized: “Wait, this isn’t your average Red deck!”
So now I’m working on finding Mono Red ways to get that sweet, sweet Commander damage. #pirates4life
