ICC Champions Trophy 2025: Fakhar Zaman, Saim Ayub Included in Pakistan Squad for CT Picked by Kamran Akmal
Tumblr media
Champions Trophy 2025: Former cricketer Kamran Akmal has named his Pakistan squad for the Champions Trophy 2025. In a big surprise, Akmal named both the left-handed openers Fakhar Zaman and Saim Ayub in his squad.
Saim Ayub suffered an injury during Pakistan's Test series in South Africa and has been out of any professional cricket since that moment. The PCB decided to send Ayub to London for proper treatment, however, his chances of making it to the Champions Trophy are quite slim.
Meanwhile, Fakhar Zaman has been out of the team for a long time now. He was dropped after speaking against the board and was subsequently dropped from Pakistan's squad for the ODI series in Australia.

Kamran Akmal includes Fakhar Zaman and Saim Ayub for the Champions Trophy
Kamran Akmal took to social media and picked his Pakistan squad of 15 players for the upcoming Champions Trophy. It is a strong squad but it depends on the fitness of a few players.
The squad doesn't have many surprises with the wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan picked as the captain of the side. Fakhar Zaman, Saim Ayub, and Imam-ul-Haq are the three openers in the team. While Fakhar and Imam are fit, Ayub's fitness is a huge concern for the Men in Green.
The middle order looks solid with Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan likely to slot in at No. 3 and No. 4 respectively. Kamran Ghulam, who scored a magnificent hundred on his Test debut, has also found a place in the team, and so has the big-hitter Irfan Khan Niazi.
Salman Ali Agha, who is currently the vice-captain of the team, provides them with the required balance with his quality off-spin bowling. Salman has been one of the best performers for Pakistan across formats for the last few months.

Strong Bowling Attack
The bowling line-up looks strong with Shaheen Afridi leading the pack. Shaheen, Naseem Shah, and Haris Rauf are the three frontline fast bowlers in the squad with Mohammad Hasnain and bowling allrounder Aamer Jamal being the reserve fast bowlers.
Left-arm chinaman bowler Sufiyan Muqeem and leg spinner Abrar Ahmed have been included as the two specialist spinners in the squad. The balance of the squad looks great but it all depends on Saim Ayub's fitness now.
Pakistan will begin its Champions Trophy campaign on February 19 against New Zealand in Karachi. The Men in Green will then travel to Dubai to face arch-rivals India in a highly anticipated clash. India and Pakistan are in Group A alongside Bangladesh and New Zealand.

Australia vs Pakistan
Brave Pakistan fell just short against Australia at the MCG, losing by two wickets. This was Mohammed Rizwan’s first game as captain. Similar to what happened under Babar’s tenure, Pakistan was aggressive and battled hard. What was disappointing was that the tourists put up a disappointing showing with the bat. The returning Babar Azam showed plenty of class in his 37, and captain Rizwan (44)…

Why did Babar Azam leave captaincy?
In the 2-minute, 15-second-long video, Zaka Ashraf revealed the reason behind Babar Azam’s removal from captaincy. He said that the then-skipper had formed a group with eight players, and he was asked to continue as Test captain. When asked by the woman who can be heard in the audio questioning on captain supporting his friends as players like Shadab have no place in the team, the Chairman replied, "Pakistan cricket is deteriorating because of this."
Here is Zaka Ashraf Leak Audio Babar Azam

“He has controlled eight players of the national team; he has signed a contract with the players. He is such a smart guy that he has built a lot of relationships with the players’ families by going to players’ houses, and the players can’t move without him, Talha Osmani, I think,” said PCB Head.

Asia Cup 2023: Pakistan's Triumphs and India's Concerns - A Preview of the High-Stakes Clash
Tumblr media
The upcoming clash between Pakistan and India in the Asia Cup 2023 on September 2nd has generated a wave of anticipation and tension. Pakistan's recent significant victory has added an extra layer of complexity to this highly awaited encounter. In a match preceding this clash, Pakistan secured a resounding win against Nepal, setting a strong precedent. As the rivalry heats up, India's apprehensions seem to be growing due to Pakistan's recent surge in form.
Tumblr media
**Dominating Performance Against Nepal:**
Pakistan demonstrated its prowess in the first match of the Asia Cup 2023 by defeating Nepal by a margin of 238 runs. This victory not only showcased Pakistan's batting might but also highlighted its remarkable prowess in bowling. Pakistan's comprehensive triumph against Nepal has raised eyebrows in the cricketing world, particularly in India.
**Babar Azam's Stellar Form:**
Captain Babar Azam led from the front with an exceptional century. His well-calculated innings of 110 runs in 110 balls laid a strong foundation for Pakistan. Babar's remarkable strike rate and subsequent half-century in just 20 balls reflected his exceptional form and adaptability. Babar's innings, powered by four sixes, contributed significantly to Pakistan's total score of 151 runs.

**Emerging Threat for India:**
Babar Azam's excellent form could pose a serious challenge for India. Additionally, Iftikhar Ahmed's impressive 109 runs off 71 balls marked his maiden century in One Day Internationals. Ahmed's performance has the potential to address Pakistan's middle-order concerns, showcasing his versatility in various cricketing departments.
**Bowling Brilliance and Spin Mastery:**
Pakistan's bowlers continued their splendid form in the match against Nepal. Shaheen Afridi's early breakthrough with two wickets in the first over set the tone. Naseem Shah, in his first over, took a crucial wicket, and Haris Rauf's stellar mid-over performance secured him two wickets as well. Pakistan's spinners, especially Shadab Khan, displayed their mettle, taking four wickets for 27 runs in 6.4 overs. Nawaz's contribution with one wicket in his two overs further bolstered Pakistan's bowling prowess.
**The Ominous Message for India:**
Pakistan's resounding victory against Nepal sends a strong message to India. This victory not only puts Pakistan in good stead but also serves as a warning to India. If Pakistan maintains this level of performance, the upcoming clash against India could be a closely contested battle, promising a thrilling encounter between the two cricketing giants.
**Emergence of Pakistan's All-Rounders:**
Pakistan's recent victory against Nepal was also a showcase of its all-round strength. Iftikhar Ahmed's century and his vital role in the middle order have undoubtedly eased the worries of Pakistan's team management. His ability to contribute both with the bat and the ball adds depth to Pakistan's lineup. Additionally, his century might just be the boost Pakistan needed to address their middle-order concerns, a facet that had been under scrutiny in recent times.
**Impressive Bowling Ensemble:**
The Pakistani bowling attack once again proved its mettle. Shaheen Afridi's knack for early breakthroughs and his fierce pace provide a promising start to the team. Naseem Shah's ability to extract wickets early in his spells showcased his potential to unsettle the opposition's top order. Haris Rauf's consistent performance and his knack for picking up crucial wickets during the middle overs adds a valuable dimension to Pakistan's bowling attack.
**Spin Wizardry and Indian Batting Challenges:**
The Asia Cup also witnessed Pakistan's spinners weaving their magic. Shadab Khan's ability to bamboozle batsmen and create pressure in the middle overs cannot be overlooked. His economy rate and wicket-taking ability are bound to pose a challenge for the Indian batting lineup. As Indian batsmen have struggled against quality spin in the past, Pakistan's spin attack might just be the X-factor that could make the difference in the high-stakes match.
**Setting the Stage for India vs. Pakistan Clash:**
With this convincing victory, Pakistan has set the stage for an intense showdown against India. The match between these arch-rivals on September 2nd promises to be a battle of nerves and skills. Pakistan's recent successes have boosted their confidence and put India on high alert. As both teams gear up for this monumental clash, the cricketing world braces for an epic showdown that could shape the course of the Asia Cup and set the tone for the future matches between these two cricketing giants.
**Conclusion: A Tale of Anticipation and Rivalry:**
The Asia Cup 2023 has already presented us with intriguing narratives and performances that have left cricket enthusiasts at the edge of their seats. Pakistan's triumphant march and their well-rounded approach have not only added excitement to the tournament but have also raised the stakes for the forthcoming clash with India. As the cricketing world holds its breath, we can only wait to witness whether Pakistan's recent surge will continue, or if India will rise to the challenge and reclaim their dominance on the field. The Asia Cup stage is set, and the cricketing drama is about to unfold!

Pakistan’s Babar Azam in T20I
When Babar Azam takes the field on Friday, 14 April for the match against New Zealand, he will become the third Pakistan player to feature in 100 Men's T20Is
Shoaib Malik (123) and Mohammad Hafeez (119) are the two other Pakistan players to reach this milestone in men's T20Is.
The level-headed Pakistan captain is well known for his flamboyant batting style and along with Mohammad Rizwan forms an intimidating opening pair in T20Is.
As we celebrate his 100 T20Is, let's have a look at some of Babar's top innings in the format.
Tumblr media
122 off 59 v South Africa, Centurion, 2021 — Babar and Rizwan are a force to reckon with. While Rizwan plays the role of an aggressor more often, there have been times when Babar has blown away the opposition with his explosive shots. The third T20I against South Africa in 2021 was one such example.
Chasing a formidable 204, Babar took the lead almost right from the start. After taking a couple of overs to adjust, he started pummelling the bowlers all over the park. His 50 came in just 27 balls and he accelerated after that with aplomb. He ended up with 122 off just 59 deliveries but unfortunately was dismissed with Pakistan needing just 7 to win, nevertheless having brought his side to the brink of victory. Pakistan then chased the total with two overs to spare. It was also Babar's first century in the format.
Tumblr media
110* off 66 v England, Karachi, 2022 — Babar's second T20I century was no less impressive and this time it came at home. After losing the first T20I, Pakistan needed to hit back. England batted first and scored 199/5. Chasing another 200 score was not going to be easy but both Babar and Rizwan were in a different mood altogether. Babar, in particular, led the charge, smashing 110* off just 66 deliveries as Pakistan registered a 10-wicket victory over England. It was Babar who hit the winning runs, an inside-out four through covers celebrating a dominating win.
Tumblr media
97* off 58 v West Indies, Karachi, 2018 — Babar's first Karachi masterclass came in 2018, four years before his hundred; an almost century innings against West Indies at home. Batting first, Pakistan lost Fakhar Zaman early, who had opened the innings with Babar. The 24-year-old Babar Azam had only hit three fifty-plus scores in his career then and came close to scaling three figures when he took on the Windies bowling attack single-handedly. Pairing with Hussain Talat at No.3, Babar hit 13 fours and a six on his way to 97* off 58 deliveries. Pakistan put up a huge total of 205/3 and defended it easily with their strong bowling attack.
Tumblr media
79* off 53 v New Zealand, Christchurch, 2022 — Babar's 79* was not in an high-scoring encounter but a low-scoring chase against New Zealand's celebrated bowling attack in their own backyard. The Pakistan bowlers had done their job keeping the Black Caps down to 147/8 in their 20 overs. But the hosts were not going down without a fight. They removed Rizwan early and crippled Pakistan further with a second wicket, leaving them at 37/2 in the sixth over. But Babar kept going. He rebuilt the Pakistan innings, first patiently stabilizing them, then pouncing on the bad balls to put them away. He formed crucial partnerships with the middle order and though New Zealand got a couple of more wickets, they had no answer to Babar. The Pakistan captain remained not out as the visitors claimed a six-wicket victory in the 19th over.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
68* off 52 v India, Dubai, 2021 — The famous ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2021 match. While there were many heroes in the game, Babar's contribution to it cannot be forgotten. After India were restricted to 151/7, Pakistan went all out with the bat to bamboozle the Indian bowlers. Rizwan was sensational and Babar played the perfect fiddle for him. Both batters complemented each other and pummelled the Indian attack without any rest. Babar hit the winning runs helping Pakistan to their first victory over India in the history of the tournament.

The rights we're talking about here are just for the IPL and don't include India's international schedule, or other domestic competitions like the Ranji Trophy. Or the ODI World Cup that'll be held in India at the end of the year.
I've mentioned this before, but on a per-game basis, the IPL is now the second most valuable sports league in the world after the NFL.
Disney Hotstar retained the domestic TV rights for the next five years, but lost the digital rights and the international TV rights.
Viacom paid $3bn to take those rights away from Disney. Disney paid another $3bn for the rights they retained.
It took football decades to crack the US. F1 needed new owners and a smart marketing strategy. But there's one last massively popular sport out there that isn't at all supported by US cultural hegemony.
An aside: The Asian subs that Disney lost here were probably 90%+ Indian. Yes, the whole subcontinent loves cricket. Pakistan - India at cricket is one of the biggest sports rivalries in the world. England - Australia is the oldest. Pakistan - India is the most intense.
But relations between the two countries being what they are, there's less crossover between the IPL and the equivalent Pakistan Super League than you might think. Their players sadly don't play in each other's leagues - India banned Pakistani players from the IPL after the Mumbai terror attacks and the top Indians are so famous at home that, even if there was an appetite to play in Pakistan, they don't need to travel the world to make their fortunes. There are issues over whether India will travel for this year's Asia Cup, scheduled to be played in Pakistan, and they haven't played a series against each other in any format for a decade, their only meetings at tournaments. I don't have figures, but other than a lot of bickering on social media about whose players and competitions are better (eg Indian fans were gleeful that some of their women are getting paid more for their participation in the inaugural WPL than Pakistan's captain, Babar Azam is getting for playing in this year's PSL) there doesn't seem to be much following of each other's leagues. I doubt there are many Pakistani subscribers for IPL coverage.

Salman Ali Agha has promised to deliver a brand of "fearless cricket" as he becomes the fourth different T20I captain for Pakistan since January 2024. Agha replaced Mohammad Rizwan as T20I captain for the upcoming white-ball tour to New Zealand, the latest in a revolving door of captains that has seen Shaheen Shah Afridi and Babar Azam come and go before him.Pakistan's results have remained poor, highlighted by a group stage exit at the T20 World Cup last year in which they lost to the USA. That has prompted a wholesale change in the squad, with a number of new faces and, significantly, the absence of a few older ones.Chief among them are Rizwan and Babar, whose batting at the top of the order has widely been seen to be a root cause for Pakistan's outdated, risk-averse batting approach. While the door has not been permanently shut on them in the format, it is clear they have been dropped, not rested."It's an honour for me and also a challenge," Agha said at a press conference in Lahore. "We've brought a few youngsters into the team who have been playing the brand of cricket in domestic cricket that we want to play in the national side going forward."We have to focus on our intent and approach. We have to improve that. In modern day cricket these things are important. This is a young team and we want to play fearless cricket. That is high-risk cricket, which is a requirement in modern cricket. There will be failures with that approach, but we have to support our players."The PCB said they have made Agha captain with an eye on the Asia Cup (in T20 format) later this year and the World Cup in India and Sri Lanka next year. They have recalled Shadab Khan as vice-captain ostensibly for this project, a player in tune with this brand of cricket."The reason for Shadab coming back is that he has good captaincy experience, plus also his mindset is to play aggressive cricket," explained the interim head coach Aaqib Javed. "His mindset is important because as vice-captain, with Agha also thinking that way, Shadab will be good. The combination is good."Aaqib, who is also the selection head, remains in those positions for the series of five T20Is and three ODIs against New Zealand, though there has been speculation about a new coach. Asked specifically about the fates of Babar and Rizwan, he linked their dropping clearly to the style of play Pakistan are hoping to adopt."You can't rule anyone out forever but for the moment we feel that we need to bring in newer, younger players and change the style of cricket we are playing. Many teams have separated their T20 sides from the others, up to 80-90% [of the personnel] different."Afridi and Haris Rauf missing from the ODI squad add to the sense of big-name axings, and Aaqib was clear that they would have to go back to domestic cricket to improve their games."Top players like Babar, Shaheen, Riz, they travel so much they don't have time to play their domestic cricket," he said. "Now they have time to play domestic cricket. Until you play four-day cricket you will not improve in Tests or ODIs. It cannot be that you play 70% T20 cricket all year and then suddenly you play Tests or ODIs."The players have to think about this themselves because ultimately they are responsible for their own game. You can't force players… don't players have a responsibility themselves to think about their game and where it is going? That I should sacrifice and take a break from T20 and play four-day or List A so that I can get my form back?"Both Agha and Aaqib spoke of developing a pool of 20-25 players for Pakistan to work with over the next 18 months or so. Both also stressed that backing them through failures would be just as important.Aaqib acknowledged the instability that has beset Pakistan cricket over the last couple of years, of which he is, for now, a beneficiary."We have changed nearly 16 coaches and 26 selectors in the last two years or so," he said. "You put that formula on any team in the world, I think they will also be in the same situation. Until you get consistency right from the top down to the bottom, from the chairman down, then your team will not progress."

Babar Azam & Mohammad Rizwan Dropped from Pakistan T20I Team vs New Zealand Series
Pakistan has dropped star batters Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan from their T20I squad for the upcoming series against New Zealand. This decision follows Pakistan's disappointing exit from the ICC Champions Trophy, where they failed to advance beyond the group stage. The changes aim to revitalize the team's T20I setup, which has faced criticism for its conservative approach at the top of the order.
Tumblr media
Salman Agha has been appointed as the new captain of the T20I team, with Shadab Khan serving as vice-captain. The squad includes newcomers like Hasan Nawaz, Abdul Samad, and Omair Yousuf, reflecting a shift towards younger talent. Meanwhile, Rizwan retains his captaincy in the ODI format, where Babar Azam remains part of the squad. Shaheen Afridi, however, has been omitted from the ODI team.
These changes signal a strategic shift by the Pakistan Cricket Board to experiment with fresh faces and tactics ahead of future tournaments. The series against New Zealand will provide an opportunity for these new players to prove themselves on the international stage.
