The markhor was categorized as “near threatened” in 2014 and is on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List of Threatened Species, and has been included in Appendix I to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora since 1992.

Capra falconeri - CITES Appendix I.

The Capra falconeri is one of the 1,099 CITES Appendix I-listed animals and plants. Over 40,900 species are protected by CITES against overexploitation through international trade and are listed in the CITES three Appendices according to how threatened they are in international trade. CITES Appendix I (one) includes species that are the most endangered among all CITES-listed species and have the highest protection under CITES. For these species, international trade is only permitted when the purpose is not commercial, for instance for scientific research.

Markhor (Capra falconeri)

This striking goat lives in mountainous forests in Central and South Asia. It’s the largest species of wild goat in the world. Its signature spiral horns can be found on both males and females: Males use them to attract attention during mating season. The markhor—preyed on by wolves, lynxes, and snow leopards—typically remains hyper-aware of its surroundings, leveraging its exceptional eyesight and keen sense of smell to continuously scan the area for foes.

Well this one has been a long time coming! This impressive animal is found in mountainous forests of Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, and is the national animal of the latter. Crossbreeding between goats and markhors is thought to be the origin of several modern goat breeds.

For this week, I drew the mammals with horns🤘 I don't have the energy or brain to explain my thought process rn, but the Bovidae (plus one Felidae) I referenced are listed under the cut!

Goggaerker: Arabian sand gazelle (Gazella marica), mouflon (Ovis gmelini)

Brotkarske: suni (Nesotragus moschatus), chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra)

Shrobshong: impala/rooibok (Aepyceros melampus), Himalayan tahr (Hemitragus jemlahicus)

Biklanokyo: saiga (Saiga tatarica), giant/Lord Derby's/greater eland (Taurotragus derbianus)

Klosweisht: blackbuck/Indian antelope (Antilope cervicapra), markhor (Capra falconeri), clouded leopard (Neofelis nebulosa)

Kregichmon: African forest/dwarf/Congo buffalo (Syncerus caffer nanus), black wildebeest/white-tailed gnu (Connochaetes gnou)

Horn variations of the markhor.

A markhor (Capra falconeri) and the horn variations of the species (Roberts 1997). In each case the horns twist anti-clockwise. The flare-horned markhor (C. f. falconeri) occurs in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India; the straight-horned markhor (C. f. megaceros) lives in Afghanistan and Pakistan; and the Bukharan markhor (C. f. heptneri) is present in Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan. All subspecies are considered endangered to critically endangered.
