While snowshoeing with friends on a beautiful winter's afternoon in the Val Biandino of northern Italy, I couldn't help but notice the striking iridescent clouds shown above. The slope of the valley effectively blocked the Sun, accentuating the iridescence or opalescence. Additionally, a colorful corona surrounding the Sun was easily visible. Cloud iridescence and coronas are both caused by diffraction processes. The mid-level clouds on the left side of the photo are formed by very fine droplets of similar sizes. These droplets deflect sunlight -- they interfere with light in such a way to produce patterns of colored rings. Note that the cumulus clouds at right (lower altitude) are composed of droplets of generally larger sizes and show no iridescence. Be sure to protect your eyes anytime you look in the vicinity of the Sun. Photo taken on January 5, 2013.

2010_05_11_0119 c2(2)rsz by Jim Via Flickr: This is a capture by Canon EOS 5D Mark ll camera at night of a visual sighting of a UAP / UFO observed flying around 2 - 3 km distance low to ground ( 500M - 1km ) to the west of my property. I followed it with many captures as it slowly travelled, silently toward the river (North ), turned to follow the river for a while, then returned toward me ( SSE ) and toward the coast and out of view. It may not be visible to you but this is a group of 4 "sled" type units that I have observed before and have travelled by before. In my research I have found that they can assumed project a "disguise" or camouflage image to their surrounding plasma shield and present themselves as other anomalies... AND to the cameras. This same group have shown as "different" shapes, numbers, colours and much more in the same sequence of photos of the same sighting. Kinda showing how technically advanced they are to us. Maybe shifting in and out of dimensions to achieve some of these. Some may be holographic. Whichever, they are certainly intriguing. Dark matter is again seen in this captured image....

Pyrocumulus Cloud Above the Cranston Fire Photographer: Mark Ritter; Summary Authors: Mark Ritter, Jim Foster

Featured above is a pyrocumulus cloud that developed over the Cranston Fire in southern California, about 100 mi (161 km) southeast of Los Angeles, on July 25, 2018. Arson was evidently the cause of this huge fire. Once ignited the tinder dry trees and vegetation in San Bernardino National Forest quickly burned, covering over 7,500 charred acres. The intense heat generated by a wildfire initiates an uplift of air that often leads to the formation of convection cells. If sufficient water vapor is available to condense around the soot and ash particles produced by such a fire, the cumulus clouds that result are referred to as pyrocumulus clouds.

New camera

I’ve been eyeing the new mirrorless cameras by Nikon and Canon for a while now. The two main reasons for me to upgrade from my current Canon 6D are size and sensor. I would like to have a smaller set of lenses and a sensor with more dynamic range.

With that said, the thing that is holding me back is the budget.

From my research (courtesy: www.photonstophotos.net) it is my understanding that the best sensor on the market is in the Sony A7iii right now. Nikon Z7 comes close. I have added some DSLR bodies for comparison, including the two I presently own.

Captivating line-up for 2018 Fugard Bioscope

Now in its seventh successful year, the Fugard Bioscope has compiled a captivating line-up for the 2018 season. The season starts on 4 February with the Academy Award-winning IDA produced by Fugard Theatre founder Eric Abraham.

Dimitri Platanias as Rigoletto with The Royal Opera Chorus as Courtiers in Act I of The Royal Opera revival of Rigoletto (2001) by Giuseppe Verdi (1813-1901), directed by David McVicar with set designs by Michael Vale costume designs by Tanya McCallin, and lighting design by Paule Constable, performed at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden on 27 March 2012.

The Bioscope presents screenings of the world’s best recorded live theatre, opera and ballet productions to be enjoyed from the comfort of a Fugard Theatre seat and on the Fugard’s full-size high definition cinema screen with a 7.1 Dolby digital surround sound system.

Productions staged by companies such as the National Theatre, Royal Ballet, Royal Opera House, Bolshoi Ballet and Young Vic are filmed live, transporting you directly into the heart of the action on stage.

“We have put together an exciting programme that combines perennial classic dramas such as the National Theatre’s productions of William Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar and Tennessee Williams’ twentieth century masterpiece Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, with newer plays such as Young Marx, a comedy from the same creative team behind One Man, Two Guvnors, directed by Nicholas Hytner and starring Rory Kinnear,” says Greg Karvellas, Resident Director and General Manager of the Fugard Theatre. “There’s also the ‘shatteringly powerful’ Yerma for which Billie Piper won 2017 Olivier Award for Best Actress and Yaël Farber’s hypnotic, visually compelling interpretation of Salomé.”

Ballet lovers are spoilt for choice with offerings from the Bolshoi Ballet including Romeo and Juliet, Giselle and The Flames of Paris as well as the Royal Ballet productions of A Winter’s Tale, Manon and their Bernstein Centenary. Highlights for opera aficionados include Tosca and Rigoletto from the Royal Opera House. Stephen Sondheim fans will be delighted to hear the Bioscope will be screening the National Theatre’s spectacular production of Follies, directed by Dominic Cooke.

Kicking off the season on 4 February is Academy Award winner for Best Foreign Language Film IDA. Orphaned as an infant during the German occupation of World War ll, Ida must now meet her aunt. The former Communist state prosecutor and only surviving relative tells her that her parents were Jewish. The two women embark on a road trip into the Polish countryside to learn the fate of their family. “An immaculate, miraculous masterwork” (The London Telegraph).

The Royal Opera House production of Verdi’s Rigoletto will be screened on 11 February. Directed by David McVicar, the production highlights the cruelty at the heart of this tragic opera. Featuring dark, Renaissance-inspired set and costume designs, the staging creates the shocking and insidious world within which this gripping tale unfolds. Conducted by Alexander Joel and featuring Dimitri Platanias in the title role.

The February programme continues on 18 February with the Bolshoi Ballet’s Romeo and Juliet, staged by Alexei Ratmansky with a dramatic urgency and fresh re-telling of Shakespeare’s beloved classic story of the star-crossed lovers.

Rounding off the month’s line-up on 25 February is Young Marx by Richard Bean and Clive Coleman. This brand-new comedy comes from the same creative team behind One Man, Two Guvnors and stars Olivier Award winner Rory Kinnear directed by Nicholas Hytner. Based on true events from the time when Karl Marx lived in Soho, London, this historical comedy has been hailed “A seriously clever comedy. Riotous fun.” (The Times).
