deePRECONnaissance: a showcase in the Gladiatorial Arena
Today I'm doing my best to a) work out what this "Gladiator" format on #MTGArena is by looking at the decklists from the 2022 community showcase and b) completely alienate Magic's entire Rainbow community. Wish me luck!
This is a series where I dig into the preconstructed decklists from Magic’s digital history. Why? Maybe you played an old event and were trying to remember a particular card. You could be a bit of a precon tragic and these fill the gap for sets which didn’t have theme decks. Or you’re looking for inspiration for new kitchen table decks for when you get together for some beers with your…

Canlander Journal 15.1: Gameday Updates
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I had a positive experience with new additions Currency Converter and Library of Leng in the last few matches, but I don't feel the same way about Bag of Holding. The exile being mandatory is a deal breaker as I think it is more likely to hurt me more often than help me.
Tumblr media
My best instinct tells me to use this as an opportunity to increase my creature count, but there's one thing I want to try first:
Tumblr media
Tormented Existence is something that's been on the edge of my perception for this deck for a while, and I think now is the time to give it a try. This makes me want to give another card I've been on the fence about another try:
Tumblr media
Defiled Crypt provides a nice payoff for using my yard as a revolving door and a hedge against graveyard hate at the same time. It enables itself and, of course, Cadaver Lab provides a Raise Dead whenever I need that sticks on the battlefield to be bargained away or otherwise utilized. The card also hits for 5 off of Palantir, which is nice. In order to squeeze it in, I'm going to bump Mind Twist.
Tumblr media
Mind Twist would seem to be a solid fit in my deck but, to be honest, it's only OK. It would be better if my deck weren't so heavily committed to discard, and in most cases it winds up being a 3 mana Hymn to Tourach, which, while not unwelcome or bad, is just kind of redundant. I'm not really happy casting it for less than X=2, but I typically want my 3+ mana sorceries to do something other than just discard my opponent. I never tutor for it and I can't remember the last time my opponent had more than two cards in hand when I had the mana to cast it for more than X=2. I'm not even running Dark Ritual, for christ sake.
I'm going to take it out and see if I really miss it.
One card I know I do want to keep around is Go Blank. I'm adding it to the locked list. I'm also going to try bringing back Wasteland.
I felt really good about my deck on Friday so I'm trying to keep changes to a minimum, as always my moxfield can be found here

UPDATE (FUCKERS)
Jund Summer has failed. Long live Deadguy Ale - Canadian Highlander edition.
That’s right, I got a Canadian Highlander League going, and here’s the basic list we’re running, which is heavily inspired by the classic Legacy midrange deck Deadguy Ale. Our point total is eight (Mox Pearl, Mox Jet, Strip Mine).
LANDS (37x):
8x Swamp
8x Plains
1x Karakas
1x Emeria, the Sky Ruin
1x Eiganjo, Seat of the Empire
1x Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth
1x Bojuka Bog
1x Takenuma, Abandoned Mire
1x Isolated Chapel
1x Concealed Courtyard
1x Shadowy Backstreet
1x Godless Shrine
1x Caves of Koilos
1x Tainted Field
1x Shattered Sanctum
1x Brightclimb Pathway//Grimclimb Pathway
1x Silent Clearing
1x Vault of the Archangel
1x Strip Mine
1x Wasteland
1x Rishadan Port
1x Maze of Ith
1x Glacial Chasm
This is the average, run-of-the-mill Deadguy Ale landbase; we got black lands, white lands, and a good mix of utility lands. I think the two most exciting are Rishadan Port and Maze of Ith - both contribute to classic Ale strategies, and both allow me to control what and how my opponent plays.
CREATURES (27x):
1x Esper Sentinel
1x Mother of Runes
1x Giver of Runes
1x Knight of the Ebon Legion
1x Cabal Therapist
1x Thalia, Guardian of Thraben
1x Spirit of the Labyrinth
1x Stoneforge Mystic
1x Dauthi Voidwalker
1x Kitesail Freebooter
1x Tourach, Dread Cantor
1x Dark Confidant
1x Caustic Bronco
1x Orcish Bowmasters
1x Tidehollow Sculler
1x Graveyard Trespasser
1x Opposition Agent
1x Liliana, Heretical Healer//Liliana, Defiant Necromancer
1x Anointed Peacekeeper
1x Archon of Emeria
1x Thalia, Heretic Cathar
1x Sin Collector
1x Kambal, Consul of Allocation
1x Kambal, Profiteering Mayor
1x Kunoros, Hound of Athreos
1x Athreos, God of Passage
1x Grief
1x Solitude
We’ve got a pretty great suite of creatures here that largely follows the usual Death and Taxes model, with the exception of cards like Tidehollow Sculler (Scully) and Cabal Therapist (Mulder). These hand disruption creatures are what gives Deadguy Ale its special, secret spice - it functions like an 8Rack deck, making our opponents discard and controlling what they have in their hands is vital to meeting the decks winning conditions.
Sub-note A.) Liliana, Heretical Healer lets us play a planeswalker that doesn’t get taxed by Thalia.
Sub-note B.) We’re also playing both evoke elementals in our colors - value is value, and a scam is a scam!
ARTIFACTS (6x):
1x Mox Jet
1x Mox Pearl
1x Aether Vial
1x Lost Jitte
1x Umezawa’s Jitte
1x Batterskull
This is where most of our points come in: the Moxen. Quick, dirty, easy mana. Plus some back up value in the Swords and Skull - mostly things for Stoneforge to tutor up.
Aether Vial is for instant speed Scullys or Mulders; flashing one of those bad boys in after our opponent’s draw step is devastating.
ENCHANTMENTS (3x):
1x Bitterblossom
1x Restoration of Eiganjo
1x Phyrexian Arena
Not too surprising enchantment wise - I like the play pattern Restoration of Eiganjo or Bitterblossom and Cabal Therapist offer me!
INSTANTS (14x):
1x Surge of Salvation
1x Silence
1x Swords to Plowshares
1x March of Otherworldy Light
1x Fatal Push
1x Not Dead After All
1x Undying Malice
1x March of Wretched Sorrow
1x Fracture
1x Vanishing Verse
1x Despark
1x Anguished Unmaking
1x Kaya’s Guile
1x Abstruse Appropriation
We’re playing a lot of instants - maybe too many, considering Thalia, but most of these solve for a lot of the biggest threats in my local meta; including that bastard True-Name Nemesis!
We’re playing the two revival effects to do an evoke scam (hopefully), and the marches to clear dead cards from our hand. Cards like Fracture and Despark hit annoying stuff like The One Ring, too!!
SORCERIES (12x):
1x Oust
1x Declaration in Stone
1x Sevinne’s Reclamation
1x Thoughtseize
1x Inquistion of Kozilek
1x Duress
1x Soul Search
1x Castigate
1x Humiliate
1x Gerrard’s Verdict
1x Vindicate
1x Legions to Ashes
Finally, the thing that really hoses Deadguy Ale is token strategies and weenie decks. If I don’t know what to target in the hand, the battlefield can quickly grow out of control. Cards like Castigate and Thoughtseize help look at the hand, and cards like Legions to Ashes clean up anybody who gets by!
Sevinne’s Reclamation is a great spell for bringing back creatures in our graveyards - essentially a 3-for-2 deal!

Day 24 Daily sketch Starting what will be a mtg proxy week! Recently met some people who play Canlander casually so I'm proxying the gaps in the collection (tutors, mostly 🤭) I'll be using the project to see what I'd come up with if I were briefed to paint the cards!

coming into warhammer from magic has been a fascinating experience, but one of the more interesting things to me is how all the different but similar games under the warhammer umbrella (40k, aos, kill team, necromunda, fantasy 9th or tow) kinda mirror magic formats, with each having its own appeal and strengths
with magic, the choice to play modern vs commander vs canlander is about the card pools you want available, or the power level, or the style of play, but the differences between entire games systems are a fair bit different. but, they all more or less fit into the same gameplay of rolling many dice, and knowledge from one system will transfer to all others, even when there are massive rule differences. kill team vs aos vs fantasy all have different appeals, which helps keep things diverse and interesting
like i've been playing the fanmade 9th edition fantasy lately, and it's really interesting for how specific the rules and armybuilding goes. it's absolutely the kind of thing where i can spend an hour thinking about minute differences, and there's a lot of fun in that. but also when i want something easier there's other similar games for that
i've heard for a while now that magic is an underlying rules system broken up into many different games, as a point on how different each of the formats is, and in light of this, i can definitely agree

Very excited to watch the pro tour this weekend no hate that it starts at fucking 5 am, stupid Amsterdam. But this meta looks cool. I'm intrigued to see pros play nadu. It's been busted in commander and canlander. Hopefully something real crazy comes out of that Other pile.

Canlander Journal #14: Sitting on the Fence
I've been spending some time identifying cards I feel sure about, but what about the cards I don't feel so sure of? Here's a few cards I've run in the last few weeks that feel like marginal cases for me right now:
Tumblr media
Snuff Out: The rationale for including Snuff Out recently was that I felt I needed to acknowledge my own dependence on tutors by including targets that could help offset the card disadvantage and tempo loss of tutoring; effects that either cantrip like Lithoform Blight, or which I can cast for free, like Snuff Out.
I hate that it only gets creatures(and only nonblack ones at that). I like the tutor targets that replace themselves a bit better than the conditionally free ones, like Massacre, which I have tried out over the last few weeks. If I'm going to tutor up something to solve a problem, I'd like that problem to be solved permanently, preferably in some way that puts me ahead. If there's just one creature that needs killing I should be getting Lili, and if there's more than one, I should be getting a wrath or the Ensnaring Bridge. I have Baleful Mastery for exile removal, I can get creatures or walkers with Bone Shards or Bitter Triumph, and although I'm still a bit light on creature removal, I feel like I should be able to do better than Snuff Out.
Tumblr media
I can already hear my ears burning with the imprecations of my peers to run Fatal Push. One thing I can say for sure is that I will not be running Fatal Push under any circumstances. Push is so much worse without a fetchland manabase to reliably turn it on and it's not a card I have a lot of experience or comfort level playing with. I've tried it out a few times and while I can appreciate why it is highly prized by others I don't feel comfortable relying on it--Cut Down is an option I would feel more comfortable with but I would much prefer an option that allows for the removal of more permanent types or provides some other versatility or upside.
Tumblr media
Speaking of, another option I have omitted from the list for some time is Feed the Swarm... And I haven't really missed it. I must say I have been running raw without any form of enchantment(or artifact) removal for some time, and it has never really been an issue. I can't remember one time I've gotten run over by enchantments, or lost a game because of an enchantment I simply couldn't answer.
However, just because no one in my local meta has been running any must-kill enchantments doesn't mean I won't run into some at the tournament in January. I want to be open to the probability that the larger metagame of the tournament might include some things my home meta hasn't prepared me for. Feed the Swarm is a bad, sorcery speed removal spell, but it's serviceable, and it's one of very few option for killing enchantments in black. Running without it feels like driving without insurance. But I just can't stomach it.
Withering Torment is an instant-speed option at 3 mana, but that still feels so bad for something I don't really feel like I need, except as an insurance policy.
Tumblr media
Extract the Truth is one possible option that feels more modal, and doubles as a restricted Thoughtseize instead of as creature removal. It does the job if there's just one troublesome enchantment, but not so much if I'm against Enchantress. One troublesome enchantment hasn't been an issue though, and 2 mana thoughtsieze is worse than half as good as one--If I was going to run any I would have to talk myself into Cruelclaw's Heist first, and I probably don't want a second 2-mana Thoughtseize on top of that, either.
My anxiety about enchantments is a solution in search of a problem for the time being, so I'm going to hold off on including any specific hate until I can get a better idea of what I'm trying to hate on. I can always Cruelclaw's Heist enchantment removal from my opponent if I really need it, right?
