i went so over word limit for this but i couldn't stop writing this, i have an addiction to this ship and i have to say this ship is the best one i've done so far, and it's extra special because it's for you. normally these ships are just over 600 words 630 max but holy shit this ended up having a word count of 1041. i literally struggle to write 1000 words of an essay but i can simp over you and this member and write a whole ass novel.

and such a sidenote but i just realised why i am so whipped for you and now it's so obvious, but it wasn't until you dyed your hair that i saw it. you remind me of a cartoon i used to watch as a kid, i used to watch all the time when i was 7-9 it was called ruby gloom and the theme song still slaps and you are literally irl ruby (even if your hair isn't red)! you're making me cry so much at that realisation

This was the quickest decision I have ever made in the history of my indecisiveness. There is something that feels so beautifully domestic whenever I picture you and Seonghwa together, it’s so vivid that I can see the exact smile he would have for you, describing it wouldn’t give him justice so here you go.

You possess this incredible gentle nature and you are also the most honest and proud person I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. You transcend the need to hide so you wear your personality on your sleeve and it the most endearing thing in this world.

But I’m not the only person who thinks so, Seonghwa would be besides himself and it would really show in everything does. You bring forth this sense of docile innocence in him, even if you weren’t dating at the time Seonghwa would have the irresistible urge to open up to you and be his most vulnerable self.

Even though Seonghwa is very loving this would be a big deal to him, normally he feels that he has some control over the relationships that he has, both platonic and romantic, but in this case, he really wants to take the back seat and see what happens.

He adores your kindness and your willingness to even give him the time of day, even though he is the literal Park Seonghwa and he doesn’t owe you anything he still feels obliged to show you just how good a boyfriend he is.

I can’t say this enough you make him feel like a good memory, you bring him so much peace and he can’t imagine ever wanting to leave your side.

Before I return to the more drabbley section of my ship we need to address your absolutely stunning visuals! Each time I see you and your aesthetic I actually get so emotional.

You are so pretty in the most wholesome way and you are an absolute icon starting from your hair to your aesthetic outfits. You literally have forest pixie visuals and your eyes are just so hypnotic, it is only natural that I ship you with THE siren eyes visual Seonghwa.

Both of you are so dreamy and beautiful, but in a way that I haven’t seen before. You both exist outside of the standard beauty standard yet you also just outdo every beauty standard ever. I truly can’t express how fond I am of your visuals and combining that with Seonghwa you get a dream couple.

Now, the creativity that just about oozes from your fingertips will never not impress Seonghwa.

Following the soft domestic relationship dynamic Seonghwa truly loves how he can just stick close to your side and experience the most exciting sense of comfort.

Your internal black cat mom energy has rubbed off on Seonghwa and he really starts to assume the role of being the dad, aka, acting like a husband even if neither of you explicitly mention the idea of having a family.

But let’s be real he definitely wants to have a family with you whenever the opportunity arises. 

You’ve actually plagued him with so much wholesome energy that it makes the other members gag, it’s so sickening to see how gentle he is with you.  Seonghwa is actually shorter than you, so the most sickening act off affection you do is resting your head on top of his just to give him a soft little kiss.

Oh, and we thought Yunho was the one and only spiderboy but Seonghwa totally looks up at you with a blush coating his cheeks as he places a feather-light kiss on your lips.

I don’t know where else to put this but talking about kisses he totally has this fixation with your tattoos he will aimlessly trace them when he is sitting next to you and he will even kiss them. His favourite will definitely be the pawprints on your thigh.

He also has a habit of treating your dogs like his babies up until the moment that you have babies.

Another thing is that SEONGHWA IS PRACTICALLY MADE FOR BOOKSTORE OR BOBA DATES YOU CAN’T TELL ME OTHERWISE.

He also tends to giggle, like actually giggle whenever you call him “love”, “darling”, or “hun” even if you give that nickname to everyone you know.

Seonghwa loves you, that much is clear by how much of a damn baby he is around you, and he absolutely swoons whenever you present him with gifts or notes of encouragement but please be warned...

He will present you with even more elaborate gifts, and sometimes they are normal cute relationshippy things but other times they have this Seonghwa flare like him designing a custom you-seonghwa-and-your-dogs-in-a-cute-house lego set that you could build together all while he tells you that you’re way prettier in person.

All in all, there is something special about you, the way you look at him is enough to summon all the butterflies. Even if he holds back on the pda he will always say just how much he loves you, he will smother you with those three words. But it’s all in good faith. So many things have happened in his life but meeting you and having the privilege of falling in love with you is the greatest thing to have ever experienced in his life.

 Now, picture this, a bed full of plushies and in-between all of that is you and Seonghwa using your five blankets as a means of hiding away from the world. All the sounds around you are muffled and yes, it’s fall, the leaves have finally morphed into a flurry of browns and oranges.

Seonghwa’s slow breathing is irregular since he is humming some small song that has come straight from his heart. The lattes for two he made sit off to the side, widely neglected as you stare into each other’s eyes, he feels like he is living a dream, he wants you to pinch him so he could wake up and go about his days. But when you playfully poke his cheek, he finally realises that the sweetest thing in his life isn’t a dream, it isn’t a wish…

It’s true love.

Every morning in the Great Hall, breakfast is served at seven am sharp. This gives the students enough time to eat, socialise and let their food settle before classes begin promptly at half past eight. It also gives the students time to read over any mail that should fall with the Owls upon their arrival at eight am.

As your family owl drops a letter inscribed with the familiar handwriting of your mother, you don’t know whether to scream in frustration or burn the letter without reading. You knew that it would be filled with her usual criticism rounded off with a few sweet lines about the renovation to the house or how your cousin was doing so well on her internship abroad.

You flip the letter in your hands a few times; wondering whether the Howler from your mother would be worth it once she never got a reply from you. However, you eventually decide that the Howler would not be worth it and that your mother’s vitriol is better off read in silence.

Rolling your eyes, you try not to let the letter affect you so much. Her words are always poisonous and toxic, but this time, she cuts you where it hurts.

“My dear, how on earth is the Malfoy boy supposed to stay with you if you continue to gain weight? I’ve enclosed a new diet regiment for you to follow – stick to it, this is not an option.”

You scrunch up the letter and the included diet regiment in your hands. Crunching them up until they resemble litter rather than the foul words scrawled onto parchment.

You had never felt you had issues with your weight; there wasn’t any need to necessarily – the meals at Hogwarts were scheduled and there was enough exercise done through the day in order to get to classes on time, and this was before the weekend walks to Hogsmeade or the ambles around the Black Lake with Draco.

You don’t feel like there should be an issue with your weight, but your mother’s words are venomous barbs that stick into your brain. Her words on replay in the forefront of your mind.

There was no real excuse for the way your mother harked on about appearances and reputations. Your family hailed from an ancient line of witches and wizards; even going so far as to state that your ancestors were among the very first to attend Hogwarts when the founders were teachers.

So for your mother, everything since then had to be perfect.

Perfect hair. Perfect dress. Perfect manners.

Perfect weight, apparently.

Any appetite you had before has now dissipated. It’s funny how three lines of a letter is enough to put one off their morning meal.

You felt like a rule change should be implemented at Hogwarts; no mail until the evening - that way students don’t have the time to sit and worry about the thoughts of their parents.

Pushing your plate away from you, you bring out your reading book from your bag. Flipping through the familiar pages, you find the dog-eared corner from where you rounded off last night before falling asleep.

It’s easy to lose yourself in the pages having read the story over a thousand times before, but the niggling voice in the back of your head that sounds suspiciously similar to your mothers has you reading the same paragraph over and over again.

A kiss being pressed to the top of your hand is the first greeting from Draco. The next is a quiet good morning as he pours himself a glass of pumpkin juice.

You smile at the blonde-haired teenager, looking up from your book, but the smile doesn’t quite reach your eyes.

“Love, is everything okay?” Draco asks; immediately spotting that something is off.

You shake your head, “It’s nothing to worry about, love. I just didn’t sleep very well last night.”

Draco chuckles; not entirely convinced but happy to wait until you come to him. “It’s because you didn’t stay with me last night.”

You roll your eyes with a grin, “I’ve stayed in your dorm the last three nights; it’s only a matter of time before someone says something.”

Draco shrugs; leaning over to peck your cheek, “Let them, I don’t care.”

“You will when we get caught out by Snape on a random inspection,” You comment with a light laugh.

Draco smiles broadly at the idea of the Head of Slytherin ever completing a random inspection of the dungeon. He grabs a slice of toast from the rack and reaches for the marmalade.

His eyes wander over the lack of food in front of you, “Already eaten?”

You nod, smirking, “And all alone as well since you take so long in the mornings.”

He laughs, “It takes time to look this good, darling.”

“Sure it does,” You comment, leaning in to peck him on the lips. He hums against your mouth happily, but all too soon, you pull away, “I’m off to the library before class, I want to get ahead on the History of Magic essay. I’ll see you later.”

You drop another kiss to Draco’s mouth before hoisting your bag onto your shoulder and departing from the Great Hall.

Draco shakes his head at your retreating figure; something about you was off, but he couldn’t place his finger on what. He wasn’t going to pester you as it would only make things worse, but he knew he had to address it before you lost yourself from overthinking.

Draco bites into his toast; already thinking of the ways he can talk to you.

Your days are always filled with little highlights; seeing the first flower bloom after a long winter or reading your favourite part of your book without being interrupted or it’s finding Draco waiting outside your classroom after every lesson of the day.

You find him waiting opposite the door to your class; leaning against the wall with his robes open, showing the white buttoned shirt underneath. His rebelliousness highlighted in the undone top button and untucked shirt. You shake your head as you make your way over to the teenager that made your heart stutter.

He grins, holding his elbow out to you, “Lunch, my love?”

“Lead the way.”

The Great Hall is loud upon your arrival. Students shouting, laughing, grabbing for food from the centre of the tables. It’s a ruckus, but it makes you smile as you take a seat across from Draco at the Slytherin table.

“Is that all you’re eating?” Draco asks with a frown at the sight of your plate.

You nod your head; your mother’s words from this morning making another round in your head, “I’m not overly hungry.”

The frown doesn’t leave Draco’s face, and through lunch, he glances between your face and the plate, wondering what’s changed for your appetite to have disappeared.

Draco walks you to your next class after the bell rings signalling the end of lunch.

He pauses outside the classroom, keeping a tight grip on your hand. His other hand reaches up to caress your cheek; a rare form of PDA from the Slytherin Prince who was more than happy to kiss and hold hands but would rarely show his feelings so openly.

“You’d tell me if something was wrong wouldn’t you?” He asks; concern alight in his eyes.

You hold his hand to your cheek; pressing a kiss to the palm, “I would.”

He nods silently. Kissing your forehead, Draco turns away, striding to his next class.

Guilt stirs within you like a lead balloon; weighing you down for the rest of the day. Even the ringing of the final bell of the day wasn’t enough to lift your mood.

Draco continues to meet you after every class; his arm always ready for you to slip yours through. But he’s quieter; more sombre as he leads your through the bustling corridors and staircases.

At the end of the day, he escorts you to the Great Hall. The level of noise quieter from lunch but still loud as students discuss their plans for the evening over the food laid out on the long, wooden tables.

Dinner is a feast by any standard, and Draco tucks right in, piling food onto his plate – ravenous after a day filled with exam preparation. You take your time with your meal; selecting more and more vegetables as you think back to the letter and diet regiment now burning a hole through your bag.

Draco sighs as he watches you pick at your food. He reaches over, checking your temperature with the back of his hand on your forehead, “Well you feel fine,” he murmurs, “Are you sure you’re okay? You’ve picked at your food all day, and you’ve become more distant as the day’s gone on.”

“I’ll talk to you about it in the common room,” You state.

“You will?”

Nodding, you promise,  “I will.”

Draco makes his way through the rest of the meal; drawing you into a conversation after conversation about how the day has been. When his plate is empty and yours has been pushed to one side, Draco stands from the bench. He takes one last drink of his pumpkin juice before holding his hand out to you.

The walk to the common room is quiet; you think over the letter in your bag, wondering about the reply you’re going to send back to your mother. One cross word from you and you wouldn’t be surprised if she, herself, showed up in Dumbledore’s office demanding punishment for your insolent words.

It was tiring, you realise, to be her daughter.

The Slytherin common room is silent when Draco leads you through the door; all students either still eating in the Great Hall or ambling about the castle. You settle on the black leather couch in front of the already lit fire; you hum at the warmth it gives off – holding your hands out to warm them through.

Once your hands are warm enough, you lean back into the couch. Feeling Draco’s eyes on you, you shift your head, facing him with a small smile.

Draco tucks a strand of your hair behind your ear, “What’s going on in that pretty little head?”

You sigh, opening your bag and pulling out the letter. Handing it to Draco, you say wryly, “Dear old mama wrote, that’s what.”

Draco scans over the letter; getting to the three lines that have played on your mind all day and have affected your eating habits so quickly.

Draco folds the letter carefully into the three; he folds it ever so neatly before ripping it to pieces in front of your eyes, leaning forward and throwing the tiny pieces into the fire.

“I hope you don’t believe a word she’s written.”

You shrug, fiddling with your fingers, “Maybe I should stop eating so much.”

Draco leaps up from the couch; spreading his arms wide, “There is absolutely nothing wrong with your weight – you do not need to lose, you do not need to gain. You are perfect the way you are. I love you to pieces, but darling, your mother is an awful person. What sort of person sends that to their child?”

He kneels on the ground in front of you, “I will love you no matter what. The sky could be green, and the clouds could be purple hedgehogs, but even that would not distract me from my love for you.”

He gestures to the pieces of parchment now turning to ash in the flames, “Everything about you is beautiful; from the top of your head to the tip of your toes – there isn’t anything about you I don’t adore. Reply to your mother if you must; tell her that you’ve let me read the letter and that I absolutely disagree with her words.”

Draco surges forward, kissing you soundly. He shifts slightly, beginning to press you into the couch, “I love you – just the way you are.”

You know what I think about a lot? And this is not a joke, I’ve been thinking about it non-stop since I watched The Old Guard.

Preservation of history.

Ok so the dichotomy in the film is: The Old Guard whose actions we reap the benefits of in the future vs the things that their bodies can do that we could benefit from now.

Well, what about the third benefit? What about the fact that these people are walking, talking reservoirs of knowledge on ancient and lost civilisations, cultures, languages? And each can provide their own unique take on these things?

Let’s take languages. According to the released extra material Andromache speaks all languages. ALL languages. How is that possible? I’ve lived in uk for 12 years, and more and more i find myself struggling when talking to my family abroad, forgetting words and phrases in my mother tongue or slipping in English equivalents without thinking about it. So how do you remember ALL languages? How is your brain wired that you retain everything you’ve ever learned and still can learn new things? And not only that, languages evolve and change and get influenced by other languages. Italian didn’t even exist as a separate language when Nicky was born, and the language he was speaking is vastly different he spoke when he was a a boy. Between the four of them (counting in Quynh) they must know hundreds of extinct languages. Imagine being a linguist and getting your hands on this type of knowledge. Imagine spending your entire academic career trying to decypher a language that no one spoke in 4000 years and then meeting someone that is fluent in it.

And the cultures? Forgotten, misinterpreted, distorted by hundreds, THOUSANDS of years of misreads, own cultural bias, mistranslations and even malicious tampering, opinions coloured by sexism, racism, homophobia, the convicion of the supremacy of your own culture. Now imagine sitting down with a frigging 7 thousands year old person who can tell you, with excruciating detail, exactly how wrong you got it.

Nicky and Joe should get their own essay? They are “only” 1000 years old but the uniqueness of their experiences alone are worth building your entire phd thesis on. Just by existing they can bitchslap the “these people weren’t lovers, it’s just how men talked back in the day” conviction out of so many historians. Joe is an artist, how much has he to say about the evolution of arts? How many famous and forgotten artists he met and interacted with over the years? I know fandom has this headcanon that him and Nicky were hanging around with every important artist ever (which I just don’t buy, btw) but we do have a canonical confirmation that they met Shakespeare - they can put to bed every stupid conspiracy theory about Shakespeare not writing his own plays with one sentence.

And don’t get me even started on their relationship with religion and sexuality.

What I’m trying to say is that their purpose might not be (just?) improving the future but about changing our relationship with the past. Maybe they aren’t warriors, maybe they are and always were, scholars.

My ultimate happy ending for them would be hundreds of historians, sociologists, linguists etc sitting down with them and writing down everything they have to say, preserving it for the future generations. We now have the technology to make it possible.

the following is a research essay assignment on Chanel Miller’s experiences in court and with Stanford University following her assault. i hope that you find it an informative read but please be aware that it discusses sexual assault. 

One Point Seventy-six Percent - A Case Study on Chanel Miller and Campus Sexual Assault

   Sexual assault is a gendered crime, predominantly victimizing women over their male counterparts. In a 2019 police data collection, the Canadian Department of Justice statistically determined that per 1000 individuals, women face 37 incidents of sexual violence in comparison to the male population’s 5 (1). This information shows that Canadian women are 7.4 times more likely to be victimized by sexual assault; this staggering statistic illustrates the heightened risk associated with being a woman. The issue of sexual assault is vastly broader than the element of gendered exploitation; a majority of Canadian victims expressed an overall lack of trust in the criminal justice system with regards to the legal processes involved with their assault (Canada 2). The dwindling confidence in the system that is supposed to serve and protect these individuals is also reflected in the responses of campus sexual assault survivors. One study states “With 4%-8% of college women survivors reporting victimization to campus authorities and 2% reporting to the police, sexual assault is significantly underreported” (Amar et al 167-68). These findings emphasize that the insufficient reporting of sexual assault occurs beyond the wide-scope of North American society, but can be further narrowed down to a setting of the continent’s educational establishments. One of the most polarizing examples of college sexual assault was the 2016 criminal case of the People v. Turner; where Brock Turner, a freshman varsity athlete, raped Chanel Miller, a recent graduate visiting campus, during a fraternity party. Miller’s experiences, and more notably her struggles, with the legal system and Stanford University exemplify the failures of these institutional bodies regarding sexual violence towards women, but would later evolve into tremendous systematic changes. 

   In Hines et al’s research, it is determined that nearly one in four women will be subjected to sexual violence during their time in post secondary education (17). Early on January 18th 2015, Miller became a number within that statistic. The assault was discovered by a pair of Swedish graduate students, Peter Jonsson and Carl-Fredrik Arndt, who were en route to a college party. The two Swedes saw what they had believed to be a couple near a dumpster, but upon further investigation discovered that the bottom individual, Miller, was prostrate and unresponsive to the sexual motions of Turner. Upon Jonsson’s call to ask if everything was okay, Turner removed himself from his victim and began to run from the bystander; Jonsson pursued Turner and subdued him until authorities arrived while Ardnt stayed with the victim to monitor her condition. The state in which Miller was found is reminiscent of most young woman’s worst nightmares. The notes of the deputy describe it as “on the ground behind the dumpster.… her dress pulled up about her hips, and gathered near her waist. Her entire buttocks were uncovered, and she was not wearing any underwear.… lying in a position with her feet and legs bent in a 45-90 degree angle (fetal position)... a pair of white with black polka-dot panties lying on the ground about 6 inches in front of VICTIM’s stomach.” (Miller 37). Within state law, individuals who are intoxicated beyond cognition or who are unconscious cannot consent to sexual intercourse (Gladwell 199). Miller’s blood alcohol levels were 0.249, thrice the legal limit, thus indicating her inability to partake in consensual sexual activities at the time of the assault (Gladwell 197). Miller gained consciousness in the Santa Clara Valley Medical Centre, unsure of her surroundings and learning that she was likely a victim of sexual assault and that her assailant had been arrested. Turner, who was released on a $150,000 bail less than a day following his arrest, had a somewhat favourable depiction in the media surrounding the assault. The news outlets spent more time focusing on his athletic achievements and successes in comparison to his heinous actions (Miller 36). The bias that has started to bloom in favour of Turner would continue to be evident during the trial and the subsequent sentencing. 

   As previously discussed, many sexual assault survivors are not confident in the legal procedures involved with criminal convictions; this theme would also extend into the criminal trial of the People v. Turner. The deputy district attorney appointed to Miller, Alaleh Kianerci, was presented with the difficult task of prosecution. Many potential witnesses, on both sides, would be unreliable due to intoxication at the time of the assault, and Miller’s unconsciousness meant that the legal narrative was mostly constructed around Turner’s account of the events, which would become heavily altered by his legal team (Gladwell 198). Within the courtroom, there was a stark contrast between the treatment of Turner, the perpetrator, and Miller, the victim. The defence built a collective of individuals and storylines to propel their case: an expert witness that had been paid $10,000 to testify, a recollection of the evening that not only contradicted the events witnessed by Jonsson and Arndt but the answers provided to the police, and multiple character witnesses from his past rather than his present (Miller 189-93). The skewed and misleading presentation of Turner’s inexcusable actions was readily accepted by the court, despite the inaccuracies it held with the established facts of the assault. This acceptance is a direct product of the legal system’s leniency regarding perpetrators of sexual violence, and ultimately distances victims further from their faith in achieving justice. These institutional failures brought life to the foundations of Turner’s defence, which was not built on trying to disprove his actions, but rather establishing that he was a victim of bad choices, uncontrollable circumstances, and dramatized accusations.

   On the other hand, Miller was not as fortunate. The examinations during her testimonials did not focus on her character or whether she was a good person, instead exploring her memory of the evening and her past sexual activity. Attorney Kianerci’s approach to the trial revolved around establishing Miller’s lack of cognizance throughout the evening (Miller 162-72). The defence team’s strategy involved the intent to discredit Miller’s statements via misdirection; asking a multitude of questions involving the contents of her dinner, whether she thought her phone was set to silent rather than ringer, and what her sexual history with her boyfriend entailed (Miller 341-42). These tactics were implemented as means to dismantle the jury’s trust in her recollection of events in order to place their faith in Turner’s account. To conclude the trial, the jury ruled against the defendant, finding Turner guilty on three felony counts: assault with intent to commit rape of an intoxicated or unconscious person, sexual penetration of an intoxicated person and sexual penetration of an unconscious person; these charges added to a potential maximum of fourteen years in prison. Brock Turner was sentenced to six months in county jail and the permanent registration as a sex offender; he served half that time. 

   “I was pummelled with narrowed, pointed questions that dissected my personal life, past life, family, inane questions, accumulating trivial details to try and find an excuse” (Miller 342). The experiences of Chanel Miller during her trial exemplify the hesitancy victims possess towards the pursuit of justice: in the slim chance of a guilty verdict, the punishment will not accurately reflect the act and will come at the steep price of retraumatization. While Turner was given the freedom to explore his past and express the character he wished to portray, Miller was confined to the unrealistic expectations the justice system holds for victims. Just like the other survivors, she was not permitted to be human. She was not allowed to make a mistake or forget a detail, not permitted to show any negative emotion towards the man who violated her, and required to list her sexual history in front of strangers. In Miller’s victim impact statement, she explicitly states “He can say whatever he wants and no one can contest it. I had no power, no voice, I was defenceless.” (340). The Chanel that existed within the context of that courtroom was not reflective of the person who was raped, instead her story was the one of the defence’s fabricated puppet whose strings were manipulated to aid the man assaulted her. It did not matter whether Miller was unconscious; in the eyes of the defence she was asking for it and nothing could change that. She was a slut and therefore her word should not hold weight against the ‘young boy’ who had made a mistake. 

   Nonetheless, we must ask: was justice served at the trial? Yes, Brock Turner was convicted of three felony counts of assault; but the criminal sentencing of Turner did not fit the bill of adequate punishment. The judge, Aaron Persky, determined -due to significant character testimony, perceived remorse, and the notion that prison would negatively impact Turner- six months in a county jail that offered reduced time was a fitting sentence. Brock Turner went from potentially facing fourteen years in prison to spending 90 days in jail; mathematically speaking, with a potential of 5,110 days in prison, he served approximately 1.76 percent of the punishment appropriate for his criminal convictions. The sentence that was delivered was a pathetic excuse for criminal justice. Though this loose punishment did not immediately prove worthwhile, the call for reform that emerged from this trial would ultimately justify Miller’s struggles. Buzzfeed News published Miller’s statement on June 3rd 2016, the article accumulated over fifteen million views within seven days. A petition in the State of California, which amassed nearly 95,000 signatures, asked for the recall of Judge Persky; he was removed from office by 62% of voters (Miller 318-22). The Californian justice system had failed Miller but the constituents who voted did not. The court trial had failed to maintain the protective duty it has towards the vulnerable, but the repercussions of this inadequacy led to the removal of a lenient judicial power and began a fiercely relevant national conversation surrounding campus sexual assault. 

   As the full picture of this case begins to emerge, one of the final puzzle pieces is how Stanford University handled the assault, the trial fallout, and the lasting effects of this response. Though Miller herself was not a student at the institution, Stanford’s campus was the backdrop for the assault and the perpetrator was a student athlete. One would assume that the University’s response would be critical in setting the tone of the condemnation of campus sexual violence -the university did not contact the victim until after her viral impact statement. The 2016 Stanford graduation was subject to protests during the ceremony, many graduates highlighting the lack of public acknowledgement regarding the assault, claiming the university was protecting the rapist rather than denouncing him (Miller 253). The response that would be later elicited by the institution could be categorized as lacklustre given the severity of the events. Stanford’s silence was broken following the growing buzz around the case; they took a defensive stance on their involvement in the incident and heavily reiterated their commitment to national leadership in campus sexual assault prevention; it is clear that the school did not respond, publicly or privately,  until their reputation was under scrutiny by the public. 

   “A pretty garden with a softer message that no one notices is actually less useful than the dumpster that preceded it” (Miller 307-08). In the fall of 2016, Stanford University reached out to Miller to participate on a commemorative garden installation at the site of her attack. The gesture had been extended as a means to offer support to Miller, but also to provide a meditative and educational space for students to learn about and reflect on the impact sexual violence has within their campus. A university representative asked for a quotation to adorn a plaque within the garden; Miller provided the words “You made me a victim… I had to force myself to relearn my real name, my identity. To relearn that this is not all that I am… I am a human being who has been irreversibly hurt, my life was put on hold for over a year, waiting to figure out if I was worth something” (307). This initial quotation, and the second: “You took away my worth, my privacy, my energy, my time, my safety, my intimacy, my confidence, my own voice until today” (Miller 310), would be rejected by the university. The institution found her words pointed, vilifying, and contradictory to their rose-tinted vision: uplifting and reassuring, and ultimately soft; they would go on to suggest other phrases from her statement that were, in Miller’s opinion contextually unfitting, such as “On nights you feel alone, I am with you”, as replacements (Miller 308-12). To this day, among the newly installed lights, vegetation, and enclosed dumpsters, the space for a plaque remains unfulfilled at the location of the assault. The silence Stanford imposed on Miller has larger implications than denying a victim the opportunity to have her words on display. It is the fact that when someone presented their trauma in its ugly, but honest, truth -rather than the diluted appearance our society prefers- it is seen as targeted, triggering, and not in the best interest of the those who will view it. Miller, like so many who have come before her, has been repeatedly silenced by the institutions in positions of power, continually stuck in a loop of denied autonomy and opinion. Her voice had been quieted, even muted, throughout her entire legal journey, and finally when she was given a platform to speak, Stanford University wanted to alter her words to better suit their image; once again, leaving Miller unable to properly express her pain, but also unable to express her encouragement to those like herself who had suffered trauma. 

   Stanford University would subject their sexual misconduct policies to refurbishments in March of 2016, likely due to the notoriety of the assault. In summary of these updates, Stanford has begun to enact the necessary reformation regarding sexual violence: committing to immediate response, offering extensive resources, piloting more in-depth investigative processes, implementing punishments ranging from suspension to expulsion, ensuring victim confidentiality, and increasing preventative education for their students (Stanford University 1-16). The institute’s actions teeter between meaningful and empty. The relationship of school and victim was created on the pretence of protecting a prestigious image rather than supporting someone who had experienced trauma at the hands of an enrolled student. Yet Stanford also amended policies to better reflect a safer, more informed campus. “However, individual’s perceptions of their campuses response are indicative of the level of awareness and recognition of the problem and the level of communication about sexual assault prevention and response.” (Amar et al 178). This quotation describes the fundamental connection between perception and prevention regarding education institutions and sexual misconduct. And Stanford University is no exception. Their response, that finds itself both disingenuous and reformative, mirrors the university’s understanding of the issue: half hearted. 

    The tribulations and triumphs of Chanel Miller reveal the painstaking processes required for victims of sexual assault to seek meaningful action against their perpetrator. Exploring campus sexual violence through the Turner trial highlights, within this certain example, the blunders of the criminal justice system and the educational institutions. The mockery of justice that was delivered to Brock Turner came at the cost of Miller’s healing; however, that is not, and should not be, the core takeaway from her story. The clear lack of criminal treatment given to Turner sparked relevant discussions about campus sexual assault in North America; it’s message led to the removal of those facilitating forgiving punishments and the necessary upgrades to the policies meant to guard the vulnerable and reprimand the guilty. Chanel Miller was not the first- and will not be the last- woman to be sexually assaulted on a college campus, and she will not be the last victim retraumatized in court while seeking justice. But her struggles helped fuel systematic conversations and changes that have uplifted others like herself. Rape is rape, and the punishments should reflect that, regardless of how fast one can swim.

A/N: Okay so, I wrote this a loooong time ago but because I had just posted ‘The One Where Everyone Finds out’ I thought that this was too similar to post right after it... And then I kind of forgot about this. So sorry about that. ”Ooh, what do we have here” you heard Bucky say playfully from the door. You froze. You had been dating Peter for a few months now in secret because of your overprotective brother. You slowly parted away from Peter and turned your head towards Bucky.

“Nothing” you said slowly, thinking hard how the hell you could explain this. “We are just hanging out here” you smiled nervously.

“Yeah… Hanging out. Just watching the TV” Peter pointed at the TV realizing that it wasn’t even on.

“Mhm, right” Bucky gave you two a sly smirk and left the room.

“Oh my God, he can’t tell Steve” you turned to Peter in panic.

“Oh, no no no no, Cap is going to hate me if he finds out! And I just got him to like me” Peter started panicking and held his head in his hands.

“Okay, we need to stop Bucky” You jumped up from the couch and took his hand. “Let’s go” you pulled him up and started running. You didn’t have to run that far when you found Bucky talking with Steve. You let go of Peter’s hand and told him to stay so Steve wouldn’t see him.

“Hey Bucky” you faked a cheerful voice when you walked to him and Steve. “Could you help me out with something?” you continued with a fake smile hoping that Steve wouldn’t get curious.

“Oh, what do you need help with” Bucky turned to you with a smirk.

“I have to write a history essay and could really need your help” you replied, the smile getting faker and faker every second.

“I can help you with that” Steve said with a smile.

”Yeah, why can’t Steve help you with it?” Bucky smirked at you.

“Well, Steve, remember the last time you helped me, and we just ended up fighting” you tried to explain.

“Okay, that’s fair” Steve laughed a bit. “I’ll just go hang out with Tony” Steve continued with an annoyed face and walked away.

“Okay Bucky, come on” you grabbed his arm and led him to Peter.

“Bucky please don’t tell Steve about me and Peter” you begged him.

“What? I thought that you two were just hanging out” Bucky said sarcastically.

“Yeah, yeah, just don’t tell him please!” you begged him once more.

“Fine. I won’t tell him, but I can’t promise anything for those guys” Bucky smirked and pointed behind you. You gave Bucky a confused look and looked what he was pointing at. Your eyes grew wide when you noticed Natasha and Clint standing behind you with amused smiles.

“Oh sh—” you muttered to yourself.  “Hey guys, what’s up. How long have you been standing there?” you laughed nervously while sweating like a pig.

“So, you and Spiderling huh” Natasha winked at you.

“You can’t tell Steve okay?” you begged again and wiped a drop of sweat from your forehead.

“Oh, I wasn’t supposed to tell?” Clint looked up from his phone.

“Oh no, what did you do?” you panicked while Peter stood behind you nervously pulling his sleeves. 

“Relax Y/N, I’m just kidding” Clint laughed and walked away.

“I promise I won’t tell Steve” Natasha winked and followed Clint.

At the end of the day it seemed like everyone on the team knew about you and Peter, except for Steve.

“You and Peter are perfect for each other” Wanda said.

“Congratulations for your relationship with Mr. Parker” Vision came up to you.

“Don’t you hurt my Spider-Boy” Tony gave you a stern look.

“Damn those guys” you slammed your door closed and sat next to Peter. “I mean, fair enough, they said that they weren’t going to tell Steve. I guess I should have been more specific,” you leaned your head against Peter’s shoulder. “It’s only a matter of time until Steve finds out” you continued with a sigh.

“W-well, maybe we should just tell him. I mean, it will be worse if he hears it from someone else, right?” Peter said while stroking your hair.

“Maybe you’re right” you lifted your head from his shoulder to face him. “What did I do to deserve you” you smiled at him.

“I’m the one who should be asking you that” Peter laughed making you blush. You smiled at him and grabbed his hand.

“I love you” you told him for the first time.

“I-I love you too Y/N” Peter smiled widely and stoked your cheek with his thumb. He pulled you closer to him and kissed you with so much love.

“Hey Y/N—” You heard Steve’s voice and you froze. You didn’t know what to do, you were so shocked that you didn’t even realize to let go of Peter.

“I—” Steve tried saying but he seemed just as shocked as you were.

“M-m-mr. R-r-ogers…” Peter finally pulled away from you.

“Um, I’m sorry for interrupting you. Just wanted to say that dinner is ready” Steve said still trying to process what he just saw. He didn’t know what to do or what to say so he just stood there quietly for a while.

“Y-yeah, we’ll be right there” you told him awkwardly.

“Okay, so, I’m going to go now” Steve pointed at the door and started walking away. As he was just about to close the door behind him he peeked his head out the door one more time. “Just, you know, be safe” he said awkwardly and closed the door.

“Well… That went better than I thought it would” Peter laughed.

“Yeah, that dinner is going to be the fun” you said sarcastically. You took a breath and stood up. “Are you ready?” you asked Peter and held your hand for him to take.

“Yeah” Peter sighed and grabbed your hand. 

You spent the whole dinner ignoring everyone’s teasing about your relationship and trying to change the subject. On the upside: all the teasing seemed to loosen up Steve a bit and make him more comfortable about your new relationship.

Shakespearean Chapter 16

Title: Bigger

It was Monday again and Jason was so not ready for this. Though he hadn't procrastinated once, he was still up until the early hours of the morning working on perfecting his essay for this week. It had been an incredibly tough assignment for him, more so because of the topic, but he was sure that everyone in the class had probably struggled with this one. Since it followed logic that the difficulty would only progress as the class went on, Jason winced as he realized that this was only week three in a 15 week course. He had a very long road ahead of him.

He arrived early, as was his usual, but instead of greeting Clark and making conversation, he used his time to read back over his essay. He knew he couldn't really edit it, seeing as it was a printed word document and any changes he made would be obvious and detract from the professional look of the assignment, but he thought that maybe if he read through it and was satisfied then it would give him some peace of mind.

He wasn't satisfied. At all.

He sighed in resignation and looked up to see Clark watching him with a look of concern. "You look tired, Jason. You doing okay?"

Jason faked a smile and nodded. "Yeah, I was just up really late working on this." He waved his essay for Clark to see before setting it back on the desk. "They're just going to get harder, aren't they?"

Clark's lips twisted as he thought about how to answer for a moment. "Maybe. Some students will have an easier time after this, because now that they have all of their information and they better understand their topic, they'll have an easier time writing the future essays about it. Some topics, though, become more difficult the more you understand them and know about them."

"Why?" Jason thought that maybe he already knew the answer, but he still wanted to hear Clark's explanation for it.

"Well, I think that's because, with some topics, the more you know about it the deeper a connection you feel with the topic, and the more you understand it, the more you care about the issue. Human Trafficking is an especially difficult topic to know about. William Wilberforce once said, 'You may choose to look the other way, but you may never again say you did not know.' The more you know about that issue, the more you care about the victims, and the more you hate the sick people who do this to them. It makes sense that people would get tired of the topic after a certain amount of... exposure."

Jason nodded his understanding as Clark called the class to order. He agreed with Clark's answer, but he wasn't sure that was his main reason for particularly hating this topic. "Alright, everybody. Luckily for you, nobody will have to read their assignments aloud." The class gave a small cheer. "I'll just ask the class a few questions and then, since I'm required to teach you about kinds of journalism other than written, I have a documentary for you to watch." The class cheered again. "First question: how many of you felt you did manage to do a decent job of representing opposing sides with no bias?"

One of the cons of sitting in the front row was that you couldn't see anybody else in the class when people were raising their hands. You had to turn awkwardly, and obviously, to look over your shoulder at everybody else. No knowing how many others agreed with you was difficult under normal circumstances, but this topic, and assignment, had Jason wired. He swallowed thickly and raised his hand.

Nodding once, Clark began pacing slowly back and forth in front of the podium. "And how many of you found it to be difficult to do this assignment, whether or not you succeeded?" Just from the sounds of weight being shifted and clothing rustling, Jason could tell a whole lot more people raised their hands this time around, Jason among them.

Clark nodded again and paused for a moment, presumably to take in the information. "How many of you feel you have a better grasp of your topic after this assignment?"

A lot of people raised their hands this time too, but not quite as much as they had for the second question. "Well, that's good. That was the purpose of this assignment, in addition to the obvious stretching it would do for your journalism muscles. Sometimes, as journalists, you will be forced to represent an issue without taking sides. While the obvious goal of many journalists is to convince their audiences to agree with them, the main purpose of journalism should be, first and foremost, to inform them that the issue exists, and then let them make their own opinion from the facts." He stopped pacing and faced the class, a wistful smile gracing his lips. "I know that's an old-fashioned notion, but I believe it with all my heart."

The class was silent, either absorbing what Clark had said or just ignoring him entirely. Clark turned on the smart board on the back wall and set up the documentary. Jason tried really hard to pay attention to what it was about, the history of journalism or something, but he was more than a little distracted by his thoughts. He could see where Clark was coming from about letting people make up their own minds, but Jason really didn't see how there could be any other real response to Human Trafficking than that it's absolutely evil and should be stopped at any cost. Jason wondered if maybe that was why he had said it was an old-fashioned notion. Back in the day, maybe there weren't such complicated issues with so many sides to pick from. Or maybe you could just generally count more on people being decent and making good choices.

When the documentary was finally over (thank God, that narrator's voice was fucking annoying), Clark turned off the smart board and faced the class. "So how did you like it?"

The class groaned. Apparently, they agreed with Jason.

Clark laughed and nodded. "I know, they really need to get a new narrator." Clark had just become even cooler in Jason's mind. "I really am sorry, but information from this video will be tested on in a quiz in a few weeks. It has to be done, my friends." Clark snickered through another round of groans from the class and moved on. "Your assignment this week is to write a paragraph. Yes, you heard me right. A paragraph. Sometimes, as a journalist, you might get enough room to write a couple thousand words, but many times you won't. All great issues can be summed up into a few sentences. Your job is to do just that. Explain your issue, pick a story to tell, I don't really care. You're assignment is to write one paragraph, no more than 200 words, that accurately gets across your issue to the reader."

Jason sighed, wondering how he was going to pull this off. Two hundred words sounded like a lot, but it really wasn't. He'd learned as much from NaNoWriMo.

"For the lesson this week, I'm going to tell you a story. It's a great story, very interesting, really. It's the story of how I decided to become a journalist." Clark pulled the chair out from behind his desk, turning it around and straddling it so he faced the class. He folded his arms on the back of the chair, cleared his throat, and began. "I was raised in a Podunk town in the middle of Nowhere, Kansas. The great farming town of Smallville - yes, it is really called Smallville - had a population of barely 1000 people. One high school, one middle school, one elementary school, one library, one post office, two banks, one grocery store, etc. People in good ol' Smallville didn't really get out much. Ninety percent of the people who lived there had never been farther than Kansas City, and I only knew two families who'd ever been to Metropolis.

"One of those families had a son a few years older than me. His name was Lex, and he was a good friend of mine. He and his dad traveled back and forth between Smallville and Metropolis a lot, and it seemed to me like he knew everything that was happening in the world when I didn't know a thing. Lex taught me to investigate things, to discover things. He encouraged and facilitated my curiosity in a time when most people in Smallville would rather we all kept to ourselves.

"Lex moved to Metropolis for good when I was starting high school, and in an attempt to prolong and honor my friendship with him as much as possible, I joined my high school's newspaper. Instead of reporting on who was dating who or how the crops were coming that season, I did what I could to find out as much about the world as I could and tell everyone in my high school about it. I fell in love with keeping others informed. And when I moved to Gotham City for university, I discovered that journalism was basically what I'd been doing all that time. So I became a journalist so I could continue telling people about the bigger issues, the things in this world that go beyond individuals.

"So the lesson for this week is this: there are people all over the world who have no idea what is happening outside of their corner of it. They are completely ignorant of anything that isn't happening to them, at their home, in their community. It is your job, as a journalist or even as just a person who has things that you are passionate about, to tell the world about what's important. Inform them. Make them care. If you don't, who will?"

Jason nodded along with the rest of the class, realizing why Clark gave them all topics that most people didn't know or care about. "And one more thing, guys. Always remember that the world is bigger than you are." Clark cleared his throat once more and took a deep breath. "Class dismissed. Turn in your essays on my desk to be graded as you leave the room. Good luck with your paragraphs."

Jason filed out of the room with everybody else, dropping his essay on the stack. As he headed out into the world, Jason couldn't help but wonder why Clark's last words, "The world is bigger than you are," had made him feel convicted.

1. Favorite book of all time?

If I pick one, all the others will get jealous, and anyway, with much hand-wringing I could maybe provide a top ten list of books that are very important to me for one reason or another, but picking one solitary favourite is an impossible task, and I won’t attempt it.

2. What are you currently reading?

Leucippe and Clitophon. It’s one of the few surviving novels of Ancient Greece, and it’s delightfully bizarre, and also features an argument about how gay sex is better than straight sex, but I’m not sure it can hold a candle to that one Roman novel that involved bestiality, a man getting his face peed on, and the protagonist twice escaping peril thanks to the timely arrival of some explosive diarrhea.

3. Have you ever considered writing a book?

Why yes, yes I have. It’s the one great existential crisis of my life, actually, thanks for asking.

4. Favourite series?

These are probably all going to be fantasy, because no other genre feels like you just absolutely can’t tell a story unless it’s 22 1000+ page volumes long. (If anyone wants to call me out here, let me just point out that there are 13 fics in that series, the first three are around 30 pages, and even the longest one is only about 200. It’s about 1400 pages altogether, which is like one and a half volumes in The Wheel of Time series or whatever. So THERE.)

Phedre’s Trilogy. I love Jacqueline Carey’s worldbuilding and the concept of a bunch of pansexuals running around doinking each other and playing dangerous political murder games.

Imriel’s Trilogy. See above. There’s actually a third trilogy set in the same universe a couple hundred years later, but honestly, I didn’t find it as compelling and didn’t read the third book. The first two are grand, though.

The Banned and the Banished. I read this series as a kid and it was dark and fucked-up and further proof that my parents left me to my own devices when it came to reading and really did not vet my books, because this would have made the TIMMY SHIELD YOUR EYES list for sure. The image of a naked woman parting her knees and a bunch of spiders crawling out of her vagina is still, for obvious reasons, viscerally with me.

The Deathgate Cycle. Another childhood favourite. Just a really good old school fantasy series with some great worldbuilding; I’ve been eyeing them again lately because I’ve been in the mood for some fantasy.  

The Chronicles of Narnia. I’ve made it really clear that I’m not remotely religious, so you’d think the overt themes of Christianity might annoy me, but these are just great stories, and honestly, I don’t find them overly preachy; I think C.S. Lewis’ writing has so much to take away from it, whether the reader is devoutly faithful or an unrepentant sinner like myself.

5. Book you’d like to read?

Sea of Darkness by Brian Hicks. This is actually one of my dad’s Christmas presents. It’s about the history and discovery of the H.L. Hunley, a submarine that sank during the American Civil War. 

Nicholas II: Life and Death by Edvard Radinsky. I spotted this at the used bookstore Friday afternoon and it immediately called to the obsessive Russophile part of me, so I had a flick through it and decided I must own it. Then I remembered that I was pretty sure I’d seen the Russian edition in one of the bookstores I use for all my Russian reading needs, and rushed home to find it. I did nick a copy from e-bay, so it’s now on its way to me, and, weather permitting, in about a week we will find our way into one another’s arms and I can read yet again about the brutal demise of the Romanovs and wring my hands over it, except this time in Russian, so with 3x the misery for half the price.  

Neil Gaiman’s The View From the Cheap Seats. This is a collection of essays on writing and creating that I’ve been eyeing for a while because Gaiman has such a great attitude about writing and seems like such a down-to-earth guy who probably has some great things to say about literature and the way it shapes us. 

 The Telling Room by Michael Paterniti. It’s about cheese. Also, Kelly’s descriptions of it really intrigued me.

And Quiet Flows the Don/Quiet Don (It’s literally just Quiet Don in Russian, but the English title is And Quiet Flows the Don, I’m sure because a lot of English speakers have no idea that it’s a river in Russia.) This is a massive War and Peace sized novel on the Don Cossacks during the turbulent years of WWI and the following Revolutions that I’ve been meaning to read for a while; I’m just waiting for my Russian vocab to catch up; I think I’m going to attempt it soon.

7. Favourite fictional character(s)?

D’artagnan, the little poncing YOU WANNA’ GO?? shit

 Edmond Dantes/The Count of Monte Christo, because I aspire to those levels of revenge but I know I’m far too impatient to carry out anything so glorious.

Magdalen from Wilkie Collin’s No Name because despite restrictive Victorian conventions meant to keep women in their parlors with a dainty cup of tea, she said ‘Fuck you all, I’m gonna’ steal back the rightful inheritance you cheated me out of through cunning and deception’ and went on to outwit a bunch of men.

Pierre Bezukhov from War and Peace because he’s such a great bumbling dweebus of a well-meaning Russian aristocrat, and I’ve always had a soft spot for him

Elizabeth Bennett, Pride and Prejudice. She destroys men with only her words; a true rolemodel for us all.

Scarlett O’Hara and Rhett Butler; they’re both terrible people, and tbh I think Scarlett totally gets what she deserves in the end, but their push and pull is so entertaining.

Jo and Laurie from Little Women and, ok, I know it doesn’t happen, I know this book was published over a century ago, but I’m still salty about it, all right??

9. Pick up the book closest to you, open page one and write down the first paragraph.

The closest book to me is a Russian translation of Ken Follett’s The Pillars of the Earth, so I walked over to the closest available English books and picked one at random. It’s a collection of Keats’ poetry:

Now Morning from her orient chamber came,

And her first footsteps touched a verdant hill;

Crowning its lawny crest with amber flame,

Silv’ring the untainted gushes of its rill;

Which, pure from mossy beds of simple flowers,

I don’t remember ever really participating in any fandom related to books. I do remember when I was a kid getting pretty into an online forum dedicated to Quest for Glory (90s point and click fantasy game), though.

Finding Comfort in Tea in Ancient China and Now While sitting at home and finding comfort in tea during this pandemic health crisis, I have been thinking about the ancient nature of Chinese tea drinking. One of my favorite things about Chinese tea appreciation is its long storied tradition from ancient China until today. Trying to stay healthy and safe during a health pandemic, however, also has connected me to other ancient ideas: surviving a health crisis. I see a lot of people online rediscovering Boccacio’s 14th century “The Decameron”, the fact that Shakespeare and Issac Newton had to wait out the plague in confinement, or the 18th century book “A Journal of the Plague Year” written by Daniel Defoe. There’s definitely something fascinating about how living during a contemporary global pandemic health crisis makes you feel connected to these ancient health crisis like The Black Death or bubonic plagues. These ancient artifacts of disease and pestilenace are represented in my mind as such out of reach and outdated realities like Middle Age woodblock prints compared to our digital photographic present. While sipping Chinese tea in my apartment in the Bronx, right in the middle of the COVID epicenter in America, NYC in the spring of 2020, I started wondering about previous ancient crisis in China, in particular, and where tea fit in there. Surely there were pandemics in ancient China and surely there are ancient poems, paintings, or literature writings about tea in relation to crisis. With ancient China flourishing in the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD), we are left with a rich amount of artifacts to rummage through and look for evidence and insights from ancient China. In the book “Tea in China, A Religious and Cultural History” by James Benn writes: “The values associated with tea today—that it is natural, health-giving, detoxifying, spiritual, stimulating, refreshing, and so on—are not new ideas, but ones shaped in Tang times, by poets.” But where to begin? I’m not a trained scholar in ancient Chinese poetry, artwork or literature. It takes me forever just to read an email in modern Chinese! It felt like googling in English to find artifacts about ancient Chinese crises and finding comfort in tea was like taking a handheld metal detector to the Pacific Ocean. So I turned to some scholar friends, namely Dr. Christine Ho, Assistant Professor of East Asian Art at U Mass Amherst, and Dr. Alfreda Murck, lecturer in Chinese Art History at Columbia University. Both Dr. Ho and Dr. Murck mentioned the famous tea poem “Seven Bowls of Tea” by Lu Tong, written in the Tang Dynasty. “Seven Bowls of Tea” is one of those texts that you see everywhere and its ubiquity almost renders it meaningless. It is, the kind of text you see excerpted and quoted in every single book about tea and especially Chinese tea, and the kind of text you see hanging on the wall of many Chinese teahouses. Is it the “Live Laugh Love” of Chinese tea? Almost. Anyways nevertheless it endures and has reached itself over 1300 plus years and halfway across the world into the consciousness of us here living our little lives in 2020 and into my own email inbox and computer screen in New York City, so it felt prudent to at least give it a new one over in the present moment. Poetry is a particularly important source for understanding tea in the ancient Chinese mind and culture. According to Benn, “Poets, as the cultural engineers of Tang times, had to invent a new world for tea to inhabit. Rather than create just a single cultural space, they made many, all of them interconnected to some degree.” So I read a translation which Dr. Murck sent me via email: SEVEN CUPS/BOWLS OF TEA Lu Tong (790-835AD) 一碗喉吻润 二碗破孤闷 三碗搜枯肠，惟有文字五千卷 四碗发轻汗，平生不平事尽向毛孔散 ��碗肌骨清 六碗通仙灵 七碗吃不得也，唯觉两腋习习清风生 One bowl moistens the lips and throat; Two bowls shatters loneliness and melancholy; Three bowls, thinking hard, one produces five thousand volumes; Four bowls, lightly sweating, the iniquities of a lifetime disperse towards the pores. Five bowls cleanses muscles and tendons; Six bowls accesses the realm of spirit; One cannot finish the seventh bowl, but feels only a light breeze spring up under the arms. The one line that really did stand out to me, reading at the present moment is the second line: “Two bowls shatters loneliness and melancholy/二碗破孤闷.” As I began to contemplate the loneliness and melancholy that Lu Tong was describing I started connecting it to the loneliness many of us are experiencing as we are socially distant and isolated in our homes to prevent spread of COVID19 and help flatten the curve. When Lu Tong mentions melancholy it also feels so presently relevant to the societal wide melancholy or at least the palpable sense of dread, anxiety, and sadness that filled the air in New York City with the staggering death toll and round the clock sound of ambulances as it became an epicenter for the global health pandemic. While searching for different English translations of this second line “二碗破孤闷” in Lu Tong’s “Seven Cups of Tea” to compare to the first English translation I read, I came across a treasure trunk filled with shimmering jewels on the ocean floor of Google: the work of Steve W Owyang, his thorough and expert essays on this exact poem on Cha Dao (the most scholarly and nerdy of prominent asian tea appreciation blogs) http://chadao.blogspot.com/2008/04/lu-tung-and-song-of-tea-taoist-origins.html, and his own website Tsiophy (https://www.tsiosophy.com/). That moment when your handheld metal detector actually finds a gem in the ocean is truly an exciting one and it made my day. I poured through all of Mr. Owyang’s copious research and expert English translations that he generously shared on his website. We even started up a correspondance and he kindly pointed me in the direction of some poems on his website. Dr. Ho while also caring for a newborn baby (!), very generously pointed me in the direction of some books she thought me be helpful (that’s how I was able to find the previously quoted “Tea in China, A Religious and Cultural History”), and shared academic journal leads. Thanks to Dr. Ho sharing her academic pedigreed research abilities that really provided the backbone of this whole inquiry. Ok so all that research, thinking, and reading has illuminated a few ancient Chinese poems all 1000+ years old, related to finding comfort and solace in drinking tea that I would like to share with you. There is of course a lot of scholarship on the historical and cultural context of each of these poems and what each word might mean in relation to that but I will let you just read them without commentary and see how it might speak to you in the present moment: Joy at Seeing Tea Growing in the Garden Wei Yingwu (Tang Dynasty 618-907 AD) Its pure nature cannot be sullied, When drunk it cleanses dust and worries. This plant has a truly divine taste, And originates in the mountains. After I have taken care of my responsibilities, I plant a tea bush in my uncultivated garden. It is happy to grow with the other vegetation And to speak with a person in solitude. Translation in “Tea in China, A Religious and Cultural History” A Song of Drinking Tea on the Departure of Zheng Rong Jiaoran (Tang Dynasty 618-907 AD) The immortal Danqiu abandoned eating jade elixirs, Picking tea instead, he drank, and grew feathered wings. The world is unaware of the Mansion of Eminent and Hidden Immortals, People do not know of the Palace of Transmuting Bone into Clouds. The Lad of Cloudy Mountain blended it in a gold cauldron; How hollow the fame of the Man of Chu and his Book of Tea! Late on a frosty night, breaking cakes of fragrant tea. Brewed to overflowing, the pale yellow froth; I sip and am reborn. Bestowed by the gentleman, this tea dispels my suffering, Cleansing my mind from worry and fear. Come morning, the emotions of the fragrant brazier remain. Intoxicated still, we walk across the clouds reflected in Tiger Stream; In high song, I send the gentleman off. Translation by Steve Owyang After Eating Bai Juyi (Tang Dynasty 618-907 AD) Having done eating I go to sleep, Waking up, two bowls of tea. Raise my head to see the sun’s shadows, Already returned to being slanted in the southwest. A happy person regrets the fast disappearance of daylight, A sorrowful person feels sick of the slow passage of time. Those without worries nor delight, Simply let life be. In this month span when I’ve been working on this self-directed research paper (hahah, just me being me) I also learned from the New York Philharmonic Digital Mahler Festival that Gustav Mahler (Austro-Bohemian German speaking 19th-20th turn of the century classical music composer) himself was inspired by ancient Chinese Tang Dynasty poetry as a comfort to his own personal sorrows and crises. He composed his 9th symphony (its a long story how this is counted as 9th symphony or not vs just symphonic song cycle), known as Das Lied von Der Erde based on inspiration from German translations of Tang Poetry! New from Every Movie Has a Lesson by Don Shanahan: COLUMN: The 10 Best Movies of 2019

Before talking about this year-end best list from one of the most back-loaded ones in recent memory, reflection is needed and a deep breath for the next decade to come.  I am forever proud of what I do. I wouldn’t chase all the press opportunities and commit the time into it if I didn’t. In 2019, a great deal of change came to me and this website of mine this past year.  I am forever proud of what I do.  

The critics group I helped found and co-direct, the Chicago Independent Film Critics Circle, rebranded into Chicago Indie Critics.  We celebrate our fourth annual awards this week and our industry reach and reputation grows every year. Best of all, it’s a pleasure to count my peers there as friends in the press row trenches.  It’s nice to share smiles and handshakes at every screening I can.

Speaking of professional standings, I answered a call for writers and began contributing for another website this year.  Since June, I’ve been providing film reviews for 25YL, short for 25 Years Later.  Founded by Andrew Grevas, what started as a Twin Peaks tribute site has turned into “all your obsession in one place” to cover a wide range of entertainment.  I became their first Rotten Tomatoes-approved film critic and have greatly enjoyed the new audience, increased exposure, and a chance to be a part of a bigger thing.

Here on Every Movie Has a Lesson, this was the first year the site has featured monetized ads.  I’m no longer doing all this for free, so thank you for dealing with the visual noise to help pay the bills.  Also, my site has been open to guest writers looking to get published. I was honored to help an astounding 44 writers get their work seen in 2019, including 21 Washington State University architecture graduate students with their movie-centered essays.  This school teacher couldn’t resist helping folks and I’ve enjoyed their content and contributions.      

Alright, let’s get to the scoreboard.  In all, I published “only” 94 film reviews in 2019, which is plenty, but down from 110 last year and my high mark of 126 in 2017.  I saw a dozen and a half more, but full-time school teachers, husbands, and dads like me only have so much free time to put 1000 words down every time.  Work-life balance, so to speak, is always a challenge, one that I aim to do better in the life direction. No matter, I think I’ve got 2019 figured out. Here are my picks for the ten best films of the year accompanied by, as always and true to my site’s namesake niche, their best life lesson:

THE 10 BEST MOVIES OF 2019 AND THEIR LESSONS

1. 1917

Full Review

I’m going to sound like an Olympic figure skating judge, but no film received higher technical marks on my scorecard in 2019 than Sam Mendes’ harrowing war thriller.  At the same time the filmmaking prowess captivated me, I was overwhelmingly swept up by the human elements as well creating a complete experience. Most people haven’t seen it yet and I cannot wait until you do.

BEST LESSON: WAR MUST BE ENDURED— All of those World War I combatants from over a century ago, including a family member of the Mendes lineage named in tribute during the end credits, may not be distinctly special or flush with a mythic history of certain destiny. Yet, what they endured was shattering and strengthening at the same time. The draw to see summoned bravery and weatherd tragedy in conflict will always be hugely magnetic. Rising with ambitious scale and a colossal level of enthrallment, 1917 will join cinema’s greatest exemplars of such captivation. 

2. Little Women

Greta Gerwig took Louisa May Alcott’s seminal novel, something that could have easily been stiff and stale, and brought new spirit to it.  Yet, in doing so, she didn’t force anything. She didn’t shove showy modernity into faces, just for the sake of doing so. Her Little Women is a mainstream PG rarity.  The spirit she, the cast, and the artists brought was genuine, sumptuous, and vivacious.  What a marvelous achievement!

BEST LESSON: THE STRENGTH OF FAMILIAL LOVE — To borrow this time from the Greeks and a dollop of The Bible instead of the Fab Four, the level of “storge” love in this saga is exquisite. When family is in need, the annoyances and competitiveness of these sisters go away and bonds are renewed. As they say in the dialogue, “life is too short to be angry at sisters.” Once again, thanks to Gerwig’s tonal choices, you see it, plain as day, in the way the cast in character interacts. The emotional wreckage that results is incredibly genuine.

BEST LESSON: WHAT WOULD YOU DO? — It is impossible to watch this movie and not have it be a barometer check towards your own relationship status and integrity. Regardless how much yearning desire floats every now and then in Marriage Story, this trauma recovery. Normally in movies like this, we see the indiscretion itself, then the collapse, ink hitting paper, and maybe a gavel banging for a suspenseful decision. Few films go in between and beyond those decision points to show the fractured orbits and restarts of continuing life with heart and honesty. There is blame to be shared, but you feel for both leads and wonder about yourself externally. That is a substantially powerful effect of this film.

Until the awards season parade of November and December releases arrived, this was my #1 in the clubhouse coming out of the fall.  Even though this is a wildly fictious morality play stretched into the settings of cinema, this movie gave me, the school teacher, a jaw-dropping heart attack.  Between Luce and Waves, you need to keep an eye on Kelvin Harrison, Jr., a certain star for this new decade.  

BEST LESSON: VENDETTAS ARE PROBLEMATIC — Simmering behind classroom smiles, what the mounting drama of Luce becomes is a straight-up vendetta, one between teacher and student. The bloodless lines of bitterness fortify to hurt people and force chosen sides. This is a saint versus a monster, with little middle, and a guessing game of which one is really which. It’s a battle the actors sell without flaw.

I was better late than never to this party for the most talked about niche film of the year.  Leave it to a foreign director in the form of Korean Bong Joon-ho to blow our American minds with the sharpest social commentary of a film this year.  Parasite’s bottle film suspense comes from the smartest and most cunning premise and screenplay of the year.  Subtitle-haters, get over your hangup and see this movie.

BEST LESSON: THE DEFINITION OF “PARASITE”— When you dig into this title (as it digs into you), three variations of meaning present themselves: 

an organism that lives on or in an organism of another species, known as the host, from the body of which it obtains nutriment.

a person who receives support, advantage, or the like, from another or others without giving any useful or proper return, as one who lives on the hospitality of others.

(in ancient Greece) a person who received free meals in return for amusing or impudent conversation, flattering remarks, etc.

You read those definitions and wonder, gosh, which one of the three will this buzzed-about Korean film seize or probe. Big or small, any one of them could take a toll.  The staggering thing is, with many flourishes, Parasite, is all damn three of them, in twisted and overwhelming fashion.

The Peanut Butter Falcon was one of a few “Little Engines That Could For Me” this year.  I couldn’t be more pleased that this labor of love and offbeat road movie, starring Zach Gottshagen and Shia LeBeouf, has been able to find a sizable audience. There’s always one movie a year that becomes my top casual recommendation when people ask me for something that haven’t heard of that is simply a good time.  This is the one for 2019. This is independent filmmaking done right.

BEST LESSON: HAVE A GOOD STORY TO TELL WHEN YOU DIE — The Peanut Butter Falcon doesn’t just tell a good story. It tells a great one worthy of attention, praise, and undying appreciation. The purifying freedom that churns throughout this movie could cultivate even the most barren heart. This little lovable film is the kind of experience that makes one rethink how their own story is going. That is a mighty, motivating accomplishment for something that couldn’t stand out more from the usual summer blockbuster fare.

Plenty of critics like myself (though I try so often to say it other ways) will use the expression “through the wringer” often when it comes to weathering difficult or excitable experiences at the movies.  Well, no movie executed that as many ways this past year than Lulu Wang’s family dramedy. It’s got the comedic peaks and the dramatic ones that both crush with frank honesty and genuine love. The premise of this movie is the curveball of curveballs.

BEST LESSON: COULD YOU DO THIS WITHIN YOUR OWN FAMILY? — The crux of The Farewell makes for several of those soul-searching quiz questions every viewer must ask themselves in a film plot as specific as this one. Should, or even could, you carry on like this? To do so would be illegal in the U.S. Can you justify your position? How long could you live with or act out what everyone calls a “good lie?” Is there even such a thing? In this culture, it is characterized as the family carrying the emotional burden for the dying. Sure, but if you’re helping them, who’s healing your internal injuries of the heart living with that weight? How you answer these will inform your connection to this film straightaway.

I found what has stood to be become the most polarizing movie of the year to be one of the year’s best.  Go ahead and judge me. Called a masterpiece by some and trash by others, I fall definitely on the high end with this maniacal comic book tangent.  Joaquin Phoenix was too good to ignore. On every level, I admire the sheer cajones of this blockbuster to pulverize us with kitchen sinks filled with cajones and questions. 

BEST LESSON: THE DEFINITION OF “GALL” — According to Dictionary.com, the four possible meanings of the noun span impudence, severity, bitterness of spirit, and rancor. To saunter a little cruder, which is fitting for the movie in play, the Urban Dictionary defines the word as audacity, balls, or something risky. Hot damn, Joker is each one of those descriptors from both sources and then some.

9. Jojo Rabbit

Full Review

Yes, it is categorically crazy to reach a point of embracing a movie about Nazis, but leave it to Taika Waititi to pull it off.  He imbues enough heart into this satire to present a transformation of wrongs into rights that is entertaining and affecting in its own way.  The filmmaker said he was making a movie of hope and love that could echo into our own present times. He did that with infinite panache without sacrificing hard reality.

BEST LESSON: WHEN ACTUALITY HITS — Using the word “reality” in this comical setting is leaping too far. Stick with actuality instead and just look at the objects and actions. Knives hurt people. Grenades explode. Soldiers die. War destroys. Germans are fallible. Jews are regular people too. When the wrongs and horrors of war arrive, the movie shifts. Jojo Rabbit swells and elevates beyond farce with this actuality.

10. Knives Out

This will sound poster-quote cliche like that “wringer” sentiment over in The Farewell at #7, but Knives Out was flat-out the most entertaining film of the year for me.  To name-drop a film lower down the list, the second most entertaining and surprising one was The Man Who Killed Hitler and then The Bigfoot at #13.  Back ti Knives Out, my review says it all deeper and better than cliches, but Rian Johnson absolutely nailed subverting the murder mystery blueprint to create pitfalls of depravity and delight.  Everyone involved is clearly having a blast and we do too.

BEST LESSON: HOW TO SUBVERT AN ENTIRE GENRE — The trope-filled mechanics of most murder mysteries create an antagonist while Knives Out has you pining for the killer instead. In flipping the rooting interests from the pursuing authorities to the identified perpetrator, the dexterous filmmaker shifted goals and bolstered energy to a different gear. Where the typical pulse rate of this kind of story opens and ends with a bang between a tedious, saggy middle, Knives Out is all about that rich center. What an equally delectable and sinful treat it is!

I don’t see as many documentaries as I should, and I don’t find it completely fair ranking them alongside feature narratives that have completely different purposes, crafts, and objectives. That said, the argument can be had that Apollo 11 was the best thing to touch a silver screen this year, no matter the discipline and genre.  Edited like a bullet from thousands of hours of content and tuned to IMAX perfection, this chronicle of the first lunar landing mission was incredible in every facet.  I’ll be the school teacher that sees every science student in the country needs to see this documentary.
