Big Boys (Seasons 1 & 2)
Tumblr media
TV Shows/Dramas watched in 2024
Big Boys (Seasons 1 & 2, 2022/24, UK)
Director: Jim Archer
Writer: Jack Rooke
Mini-review:
Wow, this show is really good. There's only 12 episodes (for now), but it manages to include a lot of brilliant moments in such a short time. It's a great portrayal of those years where you finally start to find yourself and become the person you truly want to be. And its exploration of themes like queerness and mental health is hilarious, but also realistic and heartwarming. I do wish the episodes were longer, so that we could see more of the characters building their bond early on, but the excellent cast more than makes up for that. Jon Pointing does a particularly superb job: his beautiful performance is both riotously funny and achingly sad. So yeah, Big Boys was a very pleasant surprise and I'll be looking forward to future seasons.

Birthing Jesus Camille Helminski
"And so she conceived him, and she withdrew with him to a remote place. And when the pains of childbirth drove her to the trunk of a palm tree, she called out, “Oh would that I had died before this, and that I were forgotten, utterly forgotten!” Then a call came to her from below her saying, “Do not grieve, your Lord has made for you a stream flowing out from beneath you. And shake the trunk of the palm tree towards you, and it will drop fresh, ripe dates upon you— so eat and drink and cool your eye.”"
[Quran, Surah Maryam 19:22–26]
The Quranic and Biblical accounts of the birth of Jesus differ in their details, but both recount the event with honor and sensitivity as resplendent with God’s Grace and attendance by angels. In the Quran, Beloved Mary is alone during the throes of labor, and reaches out to a palm tree for support; this gentle woman is tested to the edge of endurance, both physically and emotionally as, unsure of what is to come, she struggles, alone, and yet supported by the emerging strength of the palm. As it is storied in the Bible, together with Joseph she finds refuge within the welcoming warmth of a stable, the abode of animals of service, creatures of sustenance. Whether she was alone or in the company of her betrothed, she was reliant upon her Lord, even in the midst of difficulty, trusting in the Breath of knowingness through which she had matured, now witnessing the fulfillment of the Word.
Within the Islamic tradition, it is understood that it was an angel who calls to her to look down and see the spring that has surfaced beneath her, to drink of it “and cool your eye.” The date palm freshens and flourishes, all in a moment, and drops fresh ripe dates upon her. Once again she is provided for through the bestowal of Unseen Grace.
In the Biblical version of the story of the nativity, Mary gives birth in a stable, a simple wooden shelter, or in some versions, a cave (a quiet, safer place of retreat than the bustling caravanserai or inn), where she is welcomed by the animals to share their warmth and refuge. It had been necessary for Joseph and Mary to return to Bethlehem in the winter, because it was the year of the census that occurred every fourteen years under Roman rule; it had to be completed by the end of that December. Since Joseph was from the House of David, they must return to the home of the family lineage, to Bethlehem. From Nazareth to Bethlehem would have been about a week’s journey in those days, so they would have had to set off by mid-December in order to arrive in time.
In the Biblical version, also, the angelic and natural world rise up in support. The mystery of the majesty of the womb of Mary is celebrated with the third joyful rosary remembrance of the birth of Jesus.
A hadith relates several moments in the Prophet Muhammad’s Night Journey (‘Isra) to Jerusalem and Ascension (Miraj) when he is told by Angel Gabriel to stop and offer a prayer, and Gabriel asks him if he recognizes the locations. One of these places Muhammad, peace and blessings upon him, indicates as being “Bethlehem, the place where Isa was born.” In honor of the birthplace of Jesus, the companion of the Prophet Muhammad, Abdullah ibn ‘Amr ibn al-‘As, used to send lamp oil to the churches in Bethlehem (Bayt Lahm), located about six miles south of Jerusalem.
[Selections from The Way of Mary: Maryam, Beloved of God, Chapter V, "Fifth Star of Blessing: Birthing Jesus," by Camille H. A. Helminski]

"The film’s deeply visual emphasis also plays out in linear and direct relation to the previous prequels: The Phantom Menace is characterized mostly by the warm tones of Tatooine and Naboo, with the majority of scenes occurring in bright sunlight; Attack of the Clones balances evening and late daytime scenes, its palette dominated by the steely grays and blues of Coruscant and Kamino to underline the moral relativity of its central character; finally, Revenge of the Sith plays out predominantly at dusk and at nighttime, frequently situating its characters in political chambers designed according to the film’s “evil” tones of black and red. So too does the style of composition and movement bolster the film’s tonality: even in the midst of their narrative complexities, Menace and Clones are punctuated frequently with rousing set pieces, lending the films an exciting forward momentum. Contrarily, Revenge of the Sith submerges itself in the discomforting particulars of faltering political systems and fatal misunderstandings. The aforementioned opening provides the film’s only sequence of pure “escape,” and even that sequence takes a moment to fester in Anakin’s decaying sense of morality. Much of the film devotes itself to conversations with impossibly high stakes, dialogue delivered in a kind of blunt efficiency that recalls silent cinema; the words are functional, serving only to supplant the audiovisual power on display. When characters speak, they speak broadly and dramatically, leaving no room for confusion: “You’re breaking my heart”; “from my point of view, the Jedi are evil.” The performances also frequently hearken back to older styles: when Palpatine transforms into the treacherous Emperor we remember from Jedi, actor Ian McDiarmid exudes the expressive excess of kabuki theatre, a style lent famous cinematic context by Akira Kurosawa in Throne of Blood (1958) and Ran (1985).
Tumblr media
Given the newly expansive potential afforded by digital technology, Lucas is no longer limited to simple filmic references. In Revenge of the Sith, he boldly visualizes his interests in classical mythology and literature; to be sure, the prequels recall the tragedies of Shakespeare, perhaps most evidently in Palpatine’s similarities to Othello’s Iago. However, Lucas digs deeper and further into the past when he depicts Anakin and Obi-Wan Kenobi duelling across the volcanic vistas of Mustafar. When discussing this scene, it is crucial to acknowledge Camille Paglia’s wonderful and laudatory piece in Glittering Images. Indeed, it is in this scene that the film’s awe-striking and unprecedented anachronism totally takes over: painting his images digitally, Lucas taps into our knowledge of Dante, of the legend of Faust, the Christian Hell and the Greek Hades, of the metaphoric burning of Icarus’s wings in the form of Anakin’s smoldering body. Appropriately, John Williams’s score moves further from Korngold-echoing whimsy with each successive prequel, and in Sith it acquires operatic overtones. Never one to divide “high” art from “low,” Lucas draws from every available well of visual representation to craft this uniquely digital genre entertainment, a film that is broadly drawn in its emotional strokes but rigorous in its cinematic grammar. The starkly outlined divisions established by the five preceding films break down in the Mustafar sequence, emphasized by the combatants’ matching lightsabers. It is almost as if we are watching the mythic Star Wars world burning down, an epic downfall of elemental gestures. We can no longer perceive this man, Anakin Skywalker, as an enigmatic monster in a robotic suit; not now that we have seen him weeping with rage at the network of choices and obstacles that led him to hell. If only every myth were graced with such far-ranging moral gradients; Anakin chooses evil, because it seems to him like the only right choice at the time. Now that is tragedy."

Hi,
I make period drama style gifs. If you use gif packs, please like and reblog them. Most of my projects are already ready, but every day I post no more than 190 gifs. Because that was the reason why my previous account was blocked.
I tried to make gif packs in a format more familiar to you with a link to a separate page. However, unfortunately, I did not succeed because of the large format of high-quality gifs.
I want to explain about color processing. Usually, I improve the contrast, brightness and saturation, but leave the naturalness of the film. I don't make the contours too sharp because I like the aesthetic of it looking like a natural image.

MY THOUGHTS ON TVDU SHIPS
While trying to write for my unfinished fanfics, I think I feel the need to reorganize my opinions on certain relationships on the show/shows of the TVDU. I’m aware nobody asked for my input, this post is purely to indulge myself and get my thoughts out of my head. These are only my opinions on these ships, I’m not trying to say that anyone should share them or agree with them.
Here goes 🌪️
Stefan/Elena: Very first love type of relationship, I can see the vision. But as with many of the Stefan ships, I don’t find it very interesting. I love the romance and the fact they’re so tender with one another. I wouldn’t have been surprised if they had been endgame instead of Delena - it could’ve gone either way for me and I would’ve been okay with it.
Tumblr media
Damon/Elena: While I was watching the show I became bewitched by Ian Somerhalder as Damon and his and Nina’s chemistry. I was sold and continue to be, what can I say? Also, I tend to like the older brother-coded characters better. Loved that he was often unhinged and that he was so so desperate for Elena.
Tumblr media
Klaus/Caroline: Yes, of course. I love the dynamic, it’s my kind of trope 100%. I wish the writers had given them more, gave them a chance to truly develop their relationship. But the chemistry!!! Amazing I think. There was so much wasted potential - I suppose that’s why I enjoy writing about them so much. And I get why people like other Klaus ships better, so many of his other relationships had More of everything, screen time included. No matter, I fell in love with them through their counted scenes together.
Tumblr media
Bonnie/Damon: Oh I wanted to see them happen so badly. I was extremely disappointed that the writers weren’t braver about them. Still, their friendship was one of the things I enjoyed the most about the show. And I do think that Bonnie would’ve been better for him than Elena, she brought out the best in Damon.
Tumblr media
Klaus/Camille: When I started watching The Originals I was angry that Camille even existed, it seemed to me that the writers were trying to replace Caroline in Klaus’ new world. But then I realized that Caroline’s and Camille’s similarities began and ended with the color of their hair. Actually, I quite like Camille as a character and her and Klaus’ relationship. I was gutted when they killed her off. I feel like their love was very pure and grew so naturally over time.
Tumblr media
Stefan/Caroline: It came out of fucking nowhere I feel like. To me, it was very obvious that the writers were trying to pair off whoever was left and they were just there. I like them much better as friends because I never got any romantic/sexual chemistry from their scenes together, even when they were officially a couple. It did feel like Caroline was second best to Elena for Stefan with how and when they wrote their romance.
Tumblr media
Elijah/Hayley: I loved that they were clearly so important to one another BUT I always thought that the writers were imposing the idea of them on us even when they weren’t the best suited for each other. I don’t know, I wanted to love their relationship but they never made me feel anything. Very plain, got ZERO excitement from them.
Tumblr media
Bonnie/Enzo: Idk, one of the things I hate when introducing a new couple to a show is when the writers deprive the audience of the process of their falling in love. Maybe I’d like them better if they hadn’t already been so established after the time jump. The flashbacks were sweet and made my indifference fade a bit, but still. Bonnie deserved to have a real love story shown.
Tumblr media
Caroline/Tyler or Caroline/Matt: Hate these two ships simply because I don’t like Tyler or Matt as characters AT ALL.
Tumblr media
Hayley/Klaus: Now, these two... the writers completely failed them. There was SO MUCH POTENTIAL. I was never sure whether there was ever any intention of making them happen or if their having sex was only a device to create the plot for The Originals. In the show, they have so many moments that could be read as flirting and pining, and that’s why I’m convinced there was something more than just friendship with them, I really wanted it to be there. Recently I read a post about the cast talking about a love triangle in season 1 between Klaus, Hayley, and Elijah and I SEE IT, but I guess the writers were (wrongly) convinced Elijah was it for her. I think this is one of the few ships that I adore equally as platonic or romantic. I’ll remain disappointed for eternity about this failure to launch. Maybe I’ll write about them in the future - it’s extremely likely.
Tumblr media
Well, all this to say, I think I enjoyed most of these ships to a certain capacity while watching the show. It’s fair to say they all had their moments all thanks to the incredible actors playing them.
Conclusion: I would read and write fanfiction about all of them under the right circumstances. 🕯️🕯️
