The daughter of Cameroon's president has shared an image in which she is kissing another woman, sparking mixed reactions in a country where same-sex relationships are illegal.
The Instagram post shows 26-year-old Brenda Biya embracing Brazillian model Layyons Valença.
"I’m crazy about you & I want the world to know,” Ms Biya wrote, adding a love heart emoji.
Her 91-year-old father, Paul Biya, became Cameroon's president in 1982 and is one of Africa's longest-ruling leaders.
Those engaging in same-sex acts or relationships in the Central African nation face up to five years in jail.
Ms Biya - a musician based abroad who goes by the name King Nasty - did not explicitly state her sexuality when posting the picture of the kiss.
However, some time after the image was published, Ms Biya shared an article from Le Monde, in which the French newspaper reported that she had "come out".
She also shared other messages from people expressing their support for her.
Transgender Cameroonian activist Shakiro was among those who praised Ms Biya, saying her Instagram post could be a "turning point for the LGBTQ+ community in Cameroon".
Shakiro said Ms Biya “is now positioning herself as a voice for social change in a country where taboos are deeply rooted".
Shakiro currently resides in Belgium. She sought asylum there after being convicted of “attempted homosexuality” in Cameroon.
Although Ms Biya has been praised by some, several social media users in Cameroon responded to her post with homophobic comments.
Some have speculated whether Ms Biya shared the picture in order to generate a buzz, given her reputation for publishing social media posts that spark controversy among Cameroonians.
There have also been questions about whether coming out is a privilege that can only be enjoyed by a select few in the country.
“I love this for Cameroon’s First Daughter,” LGBT activist Bandy Kiki said in a Facebook post.
“However, it highlights a harsh reality: Anti-LGBT laws in Cameroon disproportionately target the poor. Wealth and connections create a shield for some, while others face severe consequences.”
Human rights groups have previously criticised Cameroon’s strict laws against members of the LGBT community.
In 2022, Human Rights Watch urged Cameroon to “take urgent action to revoke this discriminatory law and to ensure that the human rights of all Cameroonians, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity, or sex characteristics, are upheld”.
Barrister Alice Nkom, a renowned human rights lawyer who defends LGBT people in Cameroon, said Ms Biya was a "model of courage" who is “sending an important universal message of love".
Most media outlets in Cameroon have not reported on Ms Biya's recent picture. The media regulatory body has been known to sanction publications and broadcasters for depictions of homosexuality.
The government - and President Biya himself - have not officially commented on the story either.
The BBC has contacted Ms Biya and is yet to receive a response.

He added, "Without being politicians or activists, Kassav' carried it all. From our faces to the themes in our songs, everything was very clear: We were West Indian, there should be no mistake, we wanted to mark our difference."
One of his bands in the 1970s, Zulu Gang, included musicians from Cameroon. Mr. Desvarieux also worked with the Cameroonian saxophonist Manu Dibango, who had the international hit "Soul Makossa."
In 1979, in Paris, Mr. Desvarieux met Pierre-Edouard Decimus, a musician from Guadeloupe with an ambitious concept for a new band: strongly rooted in the West Indies but reaching outward. "We were looking to find a soundtrack that synthesized all the traditions and previous sounds, but that could be exported everywhere," Mr. Desvarieux said.
Kassav' was named after a Guadeloupean dish, a cassava-flour pancake, and also after ka, a drum. A zouk was a dance party, and a 1984 hit by Mr. Desvarieux, "Zouk-La-Se-Sel Medikaman Nou Ni" ("Zouk Is the Only Medicine We Have"), made the word zouk synonymous with the band's style.
In Luanda, the capital of Angola, there is a museum of zouk, La Maison du Zouk, that has a collection of 10,000 albums. Mr. Desvarieux and Pierre-Edouard Decimus attended its opening in 2012.
Throughout the band's career, even after Kassav' was signed to multinational labels and encouraged to sing in English, the band's lyrics were always in French Antilles Creole, insisting on its island heritage.
"The music is a stronger language than the language itself," Mr. Desvarieux said in 1986.

March 29 2023 Barcelona
Well, my wish came true and we were able to go to the Didier Gospel Choir concert tonight! The choir and the soloists were amazing! The venue was smaller than I expected and it was standing room only, except that Laura was able to sit on a bench because of being on crutches, so I sat with her part of the time. We danced a lot and swayed to the music so we really didn't need to sit down. The man who created the choir, Didier Likeng, was there playing guitar and singing with them, which isn't always the case, so I felt particularly lucky to be there.
According to Campus Gospel Rajadell:
"This native Cameroonian, born in Yaoundé and living in Brussels, is a self-taught musician with a solid experience of choirs and stage. Didier Likeng soon developed a passion for “spiritual chants” and gospel music, which he sang in his church choir at the age of 10.
At just 13 years old, he formed and conducted several musical groups in Cameroon. Two years later he became the choirmaster of the youth choir and principal organist of his church, which gathered nearly 1,500 believers every Sunday.
Didier plays several musical instruments and is a very talented singer. He is passionate about spirituals and gospel, which he has practiced and studied for many years. He quickly became one of the great animators of gospel music in Europe. He is considered by his peers as a gifted and innovative artist driven by his Faith in God.
He performs with many professional and semi-professional music groups throughout the world. He accompanies numerous artists worldwide as music director, instrumentalist or singer. Songwriter, arranger and artistic producer with more than 150 records made for artists with a wide variety of styles.
Gospel singing teacher at ESMUC (Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya) in Barcelona since 2005, choirmaster and internship supervisor, Didier Likeng is regularly called upon to lead gospel singing masterclasses & workshops in several countries.
From 1990 to 2002, he was part of the prestigious French Gospel group “The Black and White Gospel Singers”. Since its creation in 1992, he has conducted the group “The Marvelous Gospel Singers” in Belgium and many other formations such as “The Zion Gospel Spirit”, “The Gospel Wings”, “Gospel Anthology”, musical director of the “Gospel For Life” tours “. He sings as a soloist with the choir “Gospel for 100 voices”, he initiates and animates several vocal groups across Europe and is at the base of several musical creation projects. This artist is starting the project “Sky” (mixture of Gospel and Suffi music) with the famous singer of Turkish origin, Melike. He shared stage with some big names in Gospel music with more than 3,500 concerts and counting."

Muse L’artiste: Unwrapping The Emotional Journey Of ‘Give And Take’. A gifted musician by the name, Muse L’artist, donned in multiple roles (producer, singer, and songwriter), has released a soulful track titled,” Give x Take”. The “Give x Take” is not a melody but a journey to the essence of The latest gem in Muse’s jewelry box is here; it reveals the maturity that came with her growth and a heart full of emotions. Muse is not a typical artist. She’s the genuine one with an inimitable soulful and bluesy R&B touch of West African roots. She is also the brains of Powher Sound, an all-female label. In discussing with Mister Styx in Musicarenagh, Muse reveals how and when she discovered herself. Music for Muse was much more than just an entertainment during growing up. Her calling, the very essence of her being. In fact, the musical journey from classical piano, to jazz, to music production, and finally singing seems like fate to her. Muse’s songs are a reflection of what she has experienced in her journey through life. She channels her emotions to sing lyrics about justice, peace and the mysteries surrounding the world. She doesn’t force her creativity; it just comes naturally by way of what she sees, feels, and dreams. Her real connection to life transpires into her songs so that they sound meaningful from the inside of one’s gut. Listen to Give x Take below https://open.spotify.com/album/6WlNtZqHc9NDNBecT8FAsu Follow Muse L’Artiste on Facebook Twitter Spotify Youtube Instagram What is your stage name? Muse L’Artiste Is there a story behind your stage name? I had another stage name before. However it was quite restrictive in terms of branding so I went through a transition phase some years ago and my other half helped through that process and picked that name. Where do you find inspiration? I find inspiration in the experiences I’ve been through, what I see around me, what I see happening in the world. I can feel things deeply which is not always to my benefit or the benefit of others, but I’m an introvert. One way of getting things out for me has always been writing it out. I always write about what I care about but always with a goal of finding equilibrium, justice or peace. What was the role of music in the early years of your life? Music has always been part of my life for as long as I can remember. I started playing the piano at a very youg age thanks to my father who quickly identified that I couldn’t do without music. I started with classical music which taught me discipline, then I moved on to Jazz piano and after that I decided to start producing my own music. The DJ that was teaching me music production suggested I started singing and literally put a mic in front of my mouth. I was 11. Obviously it was a defining moment for both of us. And here I am today. Also I can’t thank my parents enough for playing music all the time inside the house, it fed my soul and I wouldn’t be the musician I am today if it wasn’t for them. https://www.musicarenagh.com/muse-lartistes-no-sht-is-a-journey-of-empowerment-and-resilience/ Are you from a musical or artistic family? My dad sings and plays a little guitar. I’m sure he could have made it as an artist back in our home country Cameroon but here I am, my parents started a family. I’ve always loved his songs and his ability to create memorable melodies while making everybody dance. Who inspired you to be a part of the music industry? I think there’s a lot of artists that inspired me in general and who have had a significant impact on me. However the one who really inspired me to be part of the music industry was Whitney Houston. There’s so many things that I could say about her and her artistry, her ethics as a performer. She was definitely the first and the only one I wanted to emulate as a kid. How did you learn to sing/write/to play? I started taking piano lessons at 5 years old and stopped at 11 to focus on music production. My dad, again very present, hooked
me up with a DJ who taught me all the basics of music production and how to use an MPC 2000. Regarding singing, I’ve never taken any lessons really apart from this one time with this incredible vocal coach, she taught me how to breathe and it was life-changing. What was the first concert that you ever went to and who did you see perform? I think my first concert I went to see Keziah Jones. A great memory. He’s an awesome performer and ‘Rhythm Is Love’ was such a dope song. How could you describe your music? I would describe my music as alternative R&B with hints of Neo-Soul. I would describe it as smooth, chill and soulful. My Cameroonian background also definitely plays a part into how my music sounds. Describe your creative process. My creative process is that most of the time I don’t really have one. Whenever I said to myself I’m gonna sit down and write a song or produce a track, it never comes out right. Plus I procrastinate. My creative process often happens passively, at least the beginning of it. I see something, or hear something, or I daydream, then I feel an urge to put either words down or sit behind my keys and then everything falls into place almost like magic. That’s why half the time I just think that God is sending me songs and is like ‘here you go’. My main inspiration is life really. My life, what’s surrounding me, the world in all its complexities, beauty, nuances and injustices. My brain and soul just combine it all, internalize all the information for a while, for years sometimes. Then when the stars are aligned - so to speak - it all comes out. What musician do you admire most and why? For me Whitney Houston is the greatest singer that has ever graced this planet. I could write a whole book about the reasons why I admire her but it would be way too long. But in short, her voice was out of this world obviously, her beauty, her presence, her elegance, her work ethic and I could go on and on. Did your style evolve since the beginning of your career? Yes absolutely. I started producing Hip-Hop, then I explored Afrobeat and African Jazz as I shared the stage with Femi Kuti and Manu Dibango. But I really feel that right now I found myself as an artist and I’m really happy to start making a name for myself within the R&B landscape. Who do you see as your main competitor? Myself. I’m focusing on standing out from the crowd, making my brand and message tight, and making the best music I can. What are your interests outside of music? Music and running my label take the majority of my time and outside of that as a hobby I’m interested in sports, especially football, tennis and MMA. I’m a real dude half the time! And on a more serious note, I’m interested in politics, social activism and women and children rights mostly. If it wasn't a music career, what would you be doing? Well before dedicating myself to music, I was studying science politics, so it would have probably led to me becoming an MP or something. What is the biggest problem you have encountered in the journey of music? Signing bad agreements. It’s not original but it happens a lot. That’s why as a label, I make it a point to let the artists keep their freedom. We collaborate, we don’t imprison. If you could change one thing in the music industry, what would it be? It’s an interesting and very difficult question to answer to. Of course as we all know, the music industry is far from being fair. The system always caters for the same. If I could change one thing it would be to add more balance to all of this. I think the independent music world has to organize themselves better, educate themselves better and also help each other more in order to stand a chance. Why did you choose this as the title of this project? I chose this title ‘Give x Take’ as soon as I finished writing the hook. It just made sense as the song is about giving and taking within a relationship, it’s about fairness and trying to make sure that pain is limited. https://open.spotify.com/artist/4pmKrZSjjIZwN461lfewEh?si=z4iI9jjIRPmp3gnKHrCqlQ
What are your plans for the coming months? I plan on releasing more music of course. I’ve started working on my EP and maybe an album by the end of 2024. Do you have any artistic collaboration plans Yes absolutely, I plan on collaborating with other artists early next year. Well to be honest, it’s already very much in motion and I can’t wait to share. What message would you like to give to your fans? I’m always about more love, more justice, more understanding and more peace. And if people could treat each other just a little bit better thanks to this track, I would be honored.

i was looking up Francis Bebey on tumblr to just see if there was anything interesting regarding him i could reblog and. well. apparently his music (as well as William Onyeabor's, a Nigerian musician) was used in Our Flag Means Death. the show based on pirates. who. y'know. who were slavers. idk man. feels a bit tone deaf. especially considering Francis Bebey was from Cameroon. y'know. a country in the region that was heavily affected by slave trade.
i'm white so please correct me if i'm wrong but that feels a bit shit to me to do. not only for that reason, but especially now that a bunch of (most likely disrespectful) white fans will be flooding their music and not understanding the meaning behind it, or the history and importance of it to said cultures and just taking it and only thinking of their crusty white men they love to ship
like. idk. Francis Bebey's work was very important for many reasons; not only for cultural reasons, but for bringing awareness to musical styles of Central African Foragers (see these two songs; the flute and whistling is unique to them, and was relatively unheard of before he brought it into the spotlight) into the global consciousness, as well as the plights they face
idk. it's just sad and upsetting. not everything has to be for your slave show with your white gay men. learn to have a different perspective and respect things from other cultures.
music history is really important to me, as is listening to music from other countries and cultures. it's good to broaden your horizons and learn the history behind them and be respectful, y'know? to take this music, rip it of its cultural context, and put it in a show about your white slave trading yaois is just really upsetting to me.
#my posts#not tagging this as the show bc i don't want to get mauled#also please correct me if i'm wrong#again i am white and if i'm wrong anywhere please let me know n i'll correct it#also sorry if my wording is weird i'm kinda having a flareup and it's hard for me to put together words right now lol#i've been writing this post for like twenty minutes

Scaring away others
If you believe somebody like Stitch, the actual reason why you don’t see that many fanfictions or really any fanworks involving things black people love is that they often get scared away or harassed a lot by white people for doing so. It’s not because they aren’t fannish about what they love, but that black people find themselves kicked out of fandom and especially transformative fandom many times over.
In all honesty, it’s not that hard coming up with fanworks inspired by black people. I have named many Jojo stands after songs by the Platters, the Temptations, Marvin Gaye and the Four Tops so here are the ones that I remember:
My Prayer--Enables somebody to commune with the dead.
Twilight Time--Creates pitch-black items, often weapons.
I Know I’m Losing You--Causes desertification.
Runaway Child, Running Wild--Appears as a pair of wings enabling oneself to fly.
I Can’t Get Next To You--Enables the stand user to make somebody or something swap places with another.
I Heard It Through The Grapevine--Enables the stand user to gain information from the past through touching or using an item.
Ain’t No Mountain High--Recycles items.
Sanctified Lady--It can not only cause somebody’s body systems to stop working but also revive them when needed or low.
Smoke Gets In Your Eyes--Obviously causes smoke.
I have made a lot of black OCs, coming from African countries like Cameroon and Kenya. It’s really not that hard for as long as you have a sincere interest in black cultures, though it does make me wonder whether if the refusal to do fanworks based on black musicians and cultures has more to do with having little to no real interest in anything by black people.
It can be regarded as racist in a way, in the sense that people tend to socialise who they seem more similar to but sometimes in ways that are racist. It’s called homophily in sociology and according to one study, many white people tend to have just one black friend while many black people have around white friends. This would explain why so many popslashers gravitate to whatever that’s white.
If because so many of them, at least in the West, are white themselves and why they often kick out their black peers every now and then. Since many white people don’t have that many black friends, they also consequently don’t have sincere interests in black cultures and thus can’t relate to them on a deeper level. This sets the tone for subsequent fannish works.
As I said before, it’s really not that hard doing fanworks based by whatever black musician one is into. There are a handful of people who do fanart based on the Platters for instance, I have made many stands based on Platters songs. But it’s not as simple as thinking black people aren’t fannish for what they like, since at other times white people have a habit of scaring away black people.
This extends to fanworks and why you’ll never see a wealth of fanworks based on the Platters and the Temptations like you do with Backstreet Boys.
