And I've always loved that in the last panel you can see him doing his work while it is dark outside. Calvin's dad didn't cast aside his responsibilities, he postponed them. He is staying up late to take care of his clients (he is a patent lawyer). He sacrificed some of his sleep and likely any free time he would normally have had to read a bit before bed or suchlike in order to spend time with his kid.
I also like that it's for him, not just Calvin. In panels eight through eleven you can see him grappling with what makes him happy and what brings meaning to life, and he decides that right now, the paperwork isn't it, and he suspends his responsibilities for some spontaneity.
And I love the last panel because of what a loving picture it is of their family. The dad is working late as a result of his decision, but he is content. Calvin, who is at the rambunctious rebellious age of six often butts heads with his father over various things, including bedtimes, but here is giving him a kiss, grateful and satisfied to have spent the day having fun with his old man. The mom knows that Dad is going to need to go straight to bed after finishing his paperwork in order to get up for work in the morning, and consequently she will not get to spend the evening with her husband like we've seen they usually do, but she is smiling, content with that sacrifice because she is glad to see her boys happy and bonding.
Love breeds a moment of tranquility in a frequently chaotic household.

Calvin: What's that?
Calvin's Dad: A waffle. It's like a pancake, but square.
Calvin: Why's it square?
Calvin's Dad: Because it was invented by Simon P. Waffle. He liked to stack his waffles in boxes, and it's just easier to do that if it's square.
Calvin: You're making that up.
Calvin's Dad: I'm insulted you would even think that.

So between my breakfast of atole, my character-building cold spritz at the end of my shower, and biking 6 and a half miles today to run errands and go to a head shop, I think I'm just turning into a brown, Zilennial version of Calvin's Dad.

Apparently a lot of Calvin and Hobbes Tumblr fans also recall and/or mention the Cavin's dad is a lesbian post that means I'm truly not alone nor delusional and that is a thing. Wich makes me happy because it's one of my favorite headcannons of all times.

Calvin: If somebody wants coal for Christmas, but they've been bad, does Santa give them a gift, or do they win either way?
Calvin's Mom: Ugh. Not this again.
Calvin's Dad: Hold on. He has a point.

A lot of people like to act like Calvin is just this unstoppable force of Chaos and Philosophy, when really great care is taken to let you in on the fact that Calvin very much IS the child of his parents.
Calvin gets a lot of his verbosity and views on life from his father, but he’s six, so it’s all filtered through a view of a child’s thoughts on instant gratification.
Calvin’s mom is less concrete, but we do get glimpses of Calvin’s gift for sarcasm, and if his grandmother is to be believed, his mother was just as much of a rambunctious chaotic kid as he was.
That’s not even getting into her penchant for tricking Calvin into doing exactly what she wants (a trait she shares with his father) From pretending a plate of rice is maggots to just *letting* Calvin smoke so he can learn a lesson about not doing it, she really passed on a lot of traits to her son.
So yeah, Calvin isn’t some devilish child who cursed his parents. His parents were just immensely chaotic individuals in their youth who calmed down and began to temper those tendencies later in life. Possibly to the point of forgetting what it’s like to be a kid, but those traits are still there, just hidden under a lot of layers of life and needing to be mature to raise a kid.
I meant to post all of these, but they didn’t go up for some reason…

Sometimes I think about the Tumblr coment implying that Calvin's dad (from Caviln and Hobbes) is a he/him lesbian and I totally support this hc but I never can prove to people I'm not the only one because this post disapeared.
