William Mercer Cook (January 27, 1869 – July 19, 1944) known as Will Marion Cook, was a composer, violinist, and choral director. In 1919 he took his New York Syncopated Orchestra to England for a command performance for King George V of the UK and a tour. He is probably known for his popular songs and landmark Broadway musicals, featuring African-American creators, producers, and casts, such as Clorindy, The Origin of the Cake Walk (1898), and In Dahomey (1903). The latter toured for four years, including in the UK and the US. He served as musical director of the George Walker-Bert Williams Company, working with the comedy partners on Clorindy, In Dahomey, and several other musical successes. He was born in DC to John Hartwell Cook and his wife Isabel. The senior Cook in 1879, the widowed Isabel struggled to keep her family going. He decided to be serious about his music. He started to study violin at Oberlin Conservatory in Ohio at age 14. At Oberlin, he was a student of Frederick G. Doolittle, as well as Fenelon Rice, L. Celestia Wattles, and Calvin B. Cady. With help from members of the African-American community, his benefit recitals were sponsored to help him afford to study abroad. From 1887 to 1889, he studied at the Berlin Hochschule fur Musik, working with violinist Heinrich Jacobson; Jacobson served as Chairman of the Orchestral Instruments Department. Jacobson was a former student of Hungarian violinist Joseph Joachim, considered one of the supreme musicians of the age. Some accounts state that he studied abroad for nine years, but this has not been documented. In 1898 he married the young singer Abbie Mitchell; she was 14. They had a daughter, Marion Abigail Cook, in 1900, and a son, Will Mercer Cook, known as Mercer, in 1903. Their daughter was raised by family members as Mitchell herself had been. She married dancer, Louis Douglas.                             MARVEL CELEBRATES ATLANTA

The executives at Disney are coming to recognize the efforts made by the city of Atlanta in lieu of all Marvel movies made within their city. For this, a special re-release of Avengers: Endgame with special never-before-seen footage and commemoration for the City of Atlanta, and their contribution to the American superhero culture will be presented.

This event will be a two-part affair:

THE RED CARPET

The red carpet is not something that needs to be plotted out via thread on the dash (and if people wish too, they can do so now, prior to the event starting if players wish too), it can simply be a basis for how your character got into the after-party, which is the main start point of the event.

Only half the characters have tickets. Please keep in mind those ‘gifted’ tickets will be given access to the red carpet & after-party, and those who have ‘bought’ tickets will be at the after-party only.

If by the time of the event you don’t have a ticket or haven’t figured out a way/reason for your character to buy it and get into the after party (which is for everyone), please message the admins. We don’t want anyone left out, so we will be happy to find you a spot.

All Media: Anyone in a journalist positions has passes to both the red carpet and the after party, but do not have the option of a guest, nor can be invited as someone’s guest. They have their own passes.

The red carpet is a black tie affair, and the after-party is more formal to club clothes.

Attire not allowed at the after party: Jeans, no Urban Wear (e.g., Supreme, Champion etc.), no baggy pants, no do-rags or bandanas, no tracksuits, jerseys, tanktops, or baseball caps, and no flip flops.

Dates: In real time, the event will commence at 5 pm EST on July 28th, 2019, and end on August 4th, 2019 at midnight EST.

In play, the event will have taken place August 4th at 8 pm, and ended at 3 am, so what happens can be considered ‘recent’ when the event ends.

For this event, we ask all players to tag their event-related posts with ‘atlanta: premiere’.

If you cannot participate for any reason, feel free to plot that your character was there or that they were out of town, attending to business, etc. (up to player, but if you need ideas, please message the admins!)

We ask that players not attending the event message the main for a hiatus.

For this event, we ask that no murders, critical injuries, or major arrests take place. Minor arrests (public intoxication, for example, are allowed). We ask this for future roleplay-based plots that do include everyone.

iced coffee in hand, sword strapped to her back and knife holstered at her side, colette sleepily makes her way towards fairvales front gates reminding herself that she’s a responsible member of the towns society and telling the people in charge where to jump for assigning her a run at the ass crack of dawn probably wasn’t going to help her win friends and influence people.

luckily it wasn’t an overnighter, the two person runs never were, just a simple trip out to train up some new guy and she’d be back before nightfall.

there’s a dude standing next to the old pick up truck the auto guys must have brought out and prepped for the trip, and he looks hardy enough so she’s thinking this run at the very least should be smooth sailing, so she sidles over and makes herself known.

Alongside one of the creative directors from the #mycalvins Calvin Klein campaign (Bryan Wolff) and a senior art director from Spotify (Tal Midyan) we produced & directed a music video, online installation and (soon) a physical installation for the debut single of Yesh, a Tibetan singer songwriter.

The video tells the story of a matriarch of a family passing away, and examines fifteen moments surrounding this period. The narrative is told through three generations of women— the grandmother, her daughter and her young adolescent granddaughter. It’s a tender and haunting exploration of memory, afterlife and how we find peace in the absence of those we love.

In addition to the video, we conceptualized and developed an online installation (with our friends over at unfun.de and Scotty Jacobson) that will serve as a second home for the video. The interactive website recognizes your IP address and generates an entirely new re-edit of the music video via a proprietary algorithm we’ve developed every time you visit the site or refresh the player. Conceptually, it challenges the notion of memory and how our memories come to us in entirely unpredictable and nonlinear sequences. It has roughly 6.2 billion different permutations, close to one for every human on earth.

I was always inspired by Beatrix Potter, ever since I was a child. Her attention to detail, love of anatomically correct animals, and sometimes quite dark humor, has influenced my art since forever.

My parents owned the complete collection of Calvin and Hobbes; I used to get a piece of paper and trace over Hobbes to learn how to draw him!

His sense of motion and very natural style of inking are still a big influence to me. Oh to be as loose with my ink as he is!

And of course, like all young modern day artists, Studio Ghibli.

My Neighbor Totoro was the first thing I ever saw by them; my brothers rented it for me on a VHS when I was 6. Its vivid colors and love of nature permanently impacted me and my art.

As I got older, I noticed most of my favorite artists had something in common: Watercolors with ink lines, and every painting told a story. 

I wasn’t content to draw a pretty girl sitting in front of a window; I had to know why she was sitting in front of a window, what type of window was it? Where did she live? Was she pretty because she was born that way or did she steal it from her sister who’s trapped beneath a lake?

What changed the direction of my art (For a while I thought I wanted to be a cartoonist like Bill Waterson) was when I discovered Edmund Dulac. I loved his fine inking, composition, and the faded brown antique look. I’m still trying to find a balance between that sepia tone, and my love of vivid colors.

Also, for sheer strangeness, Peter Sis. His fishes with faces have permeated my art forever.

As for WHAT inspires me...I would have to say my environment and my family.

I live in the countryside, on the Jacobson Family Farm, and it is beautiful here; chickens, turkeys, cows, sheep, a still young orchard, and a lake a mile up. Hundreds of tiny black toads seem to rise from the ground when it rains, and a cougar who lives in an old dug-out by the lake.

My family really is my biggest blessing. My parents and siblings love my art and support me 100%. When I was young, I would tell me little sister Alice stories as we fell asleep at night; now that I’m older, I can tell me nieces and nephews stories as we camp five feet from the house in pop-up tents. These stories always end up becoming illustrations later!

There are other things that inspire me; documentaries about history, cultures, nature, sea life, or anything really. My uncle makes prosthetic limbs for a living, so I’ve always been fascinated by that, and include them in my art and stories quite frequently.

I’m highly susceptible to inspiration; I’ve been inspired by the pattern on curtains and the shape of my blanket.

OAK RIDGE, Tenn., April 20, 2017 — A multi-institution research team has used supercomputing to understand processes leading to increased drought resistance in food and fuel crops.

Photosynthesis, the method plants use to convert energy from the sun into food, is a ubiquitous process many people learn about in elementary school. Almost all plants use photosynthesis to gather energy and stay alive.

Not all photosynthetic processes are the same, though. In recent years, researchers have grown increasingly interested in desert plants’ preferred method of photosynthesis—crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM), a process named after the Crassulaceae family of plants, which include succulents like friendship plants, pig’s ears, and hens and chicks.

These plants caught researchers’ attention because of their seemingly opposite photosynthetic schedule, and understanding this process may be the genetic key to helping plants of all kinds conserve water. With a more fundamental understanding of CAM, scientists aim to help the plants upon which society relies for food and fuel become more drought resistant, thereby expanding the area where crops can grow and thrive.

“One of the benefits of CAM photosynthesis is water efficiency,” said Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) computational biologist Dan Jacobson, who is part of a multi-institutional team that recently published a CAM study in Nature Plants. “When you think of bioenergy and food crops, you want them to be able to tolerate drought stress or grow in areas that aren’t currently arable land. That means they have to be able to withstand some kind of environmental stress, most commonly drought stress. CAM species are very good at this.”

To that end, Jacobson works with a large group of experimentalists and computational scientists to more fully understand the CAM process. This cross-omics team (combining expertise in metabolomics, proteomics, and genomics) uses computing resources at the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility (OLCF)—a US Department of Energy Office of Science User Facility located at ORNL—to catalog how plants’ CAM processes vary and ultimately uncover how CAM processes may be genetically engineered into feed stock, food crops, and crops for bioenergy applications.

Shining a light on photosynthesis

When most people think of photosynthesis, they are actually thinking of a specific form, called C3 photosynthesis. This process follows the Calvin Cycle, in which plants capture light energy during the day and convert it into energy-bearing adenosine triphosphate (ATP).

ATP helps plants split water atoms into their hydrogen and oxygen constituent particles. Meanwhile, a C3 photosynthetic plant opens up small pores—called stomata—to absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Then at night, the newly freed hydrogen particles combine with carbon dioxide absorbed during the day to create the carbohydrates plants use to live and grow.

CAM photosynthesis works the same way, but stomata open for respiration at night and stay tightly closed during the day, allowing plants to conserve more water. This helps plants like cactus and Agave survive in climates where water is scarce.

Less than 10 percent of known plant species use this specialized form of photosynthesis, but researchers hope that by understanding how CAM works, they can apply this water-saving method to other plants. To do that, though, researchers need to understand how molecules interact during CAM photosynthesis and how metabolites and proteins change over time.

Data-intensive design

In addition to simulating processes too dangerous or complex for experiments, supercomputers also help scientists make connections in vast amounts of data. For this project, researchers from ORNL, the University of Tennessee, Newcastle University in the United Kingdom, and the University of Nevada, Reno gathered photosynthesis data from Agave (a CAM plant) and compared it with the Arabidopsis genus of plants (C3 plants). To conduct a study between Agave and a C3 plant, the team selected the Arabidopsis genus plant thale cress, one of the first plants to have its genome sequenced and a good candidate for plant studies.

The team then studied what gene expressions control stomata opening and closing in both CAM and C3 plants and how proteins regulated this process. Collecting this data in both a common CAM and a C3 species allowed the team to distinguish traits ubiquitous to CAM plants from species-specific traits. However, finding these connections required a machine capable of comparing large data sets against themselves.

Jacobson and his collaborators used the OLCF’s Eos analysis cluster to run “all-versus-all” comparisons of the team’s data sets. These comparisons scan large data sets and compare each individual plant’s data with all others. This helps the team form relationships between the metabolic processes underpinning CAM in individual Agave specimens as well as the differences between Agave’s CAM properties from thale cress’s C3 properties.

“These all-against-all vector comparisons for correlation networks allowed us to look for different types of patterns and different times of day where the [gene expression] transcripts are correlated with each other, where they were correlated to proteins or metabolites, or times of the day where they shift dramatically,” Jacobson said.

The team members gained access to OLCF resources through the OLCF’s Director’s Discretionary program, and after familiarizing themselves with Titan’s hybrid architecture, they plan to expand research into other CAM species, comparing larger data sets and more fully cataloging CAM processes. “As we gain more knowledge from these various approaches, we hope to tease apart the underlying mechanisms for CAM and how it is regulated,” Jacobson said. “That starts to build toward having enough knowledge to deploy CAM in a new species.”

Jacobson also indicated that without access to high-performance computing, the team would not have been able to find these meaningful connections in a timely manner. “This is the first study looking at a cross-omics, time-course experiment to try and explore CAM at this molecular detail,” he said. “I think the ability to use supercomputing infrastructure enabled things that wouldn’t have been possible otherwise. We were able to have a pretty big impact on the analysis of this work because of those resources.”
