Heading into its conference championship weekend, NFL viewership is up, which should affect media rights negotiations. The NFL averaged 16.5 million viewers per game during the 2019 regular season, up from 15.8 million in 2018 — the league's second consecutive annual increase of 5%. The rebound in viewership from the previous two years, according to Axios Sports, will give the NFL higher leverage when negotiating new distribution deals with media partners. Currently, the NFL gets around $1 billion annually from each the three broadcast networks that air Sunday games (CBS, FOX, and NBC), over $1 billion from ESPN to air Monday night games, and around $1.5 billion from AT&T's DirecTV to distribute its Sunday Ticket package. Among predictions about where NFL rights will land in the future, SportsBusiness Journal posits that global streaming service DAZN come close to picking up rights to NFL Sunday Ticket. And Lightshed Partners predicts that CBS will lose Sunday afternoon NFL rights to either NBC or ABC, given price increases, and that FOX will retain its rights. Most of the NFL's current media deals expire in 2022 or sooner, and experts predict that prices will go up significantly in the next round of deals.

Two-thirds of Americans support college players being allowed to earn money through endorsements according to a new poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. As the NCAA mulls new rules about athlete endorsement and Name, Image, and Likeness compensation, the study found that support for the NCAA allowing college athletes to cash in on their names, images, and likenesses is particularly high among young adults, as well as black Americans and Hispanics. “The opinions of the public in general are very important because they are reflected in the attitudes of universities, who are the ones that actually make the rules,” NCAA President Mark Emmert told the Associated Press. Another interpretation of Emmert’s comments and a peek into the crystal ball on the issue: if two-thirds of Americans support the proposed rules, that likely means two-thirds of college and university boosters, the influential lifeblood of athletic departments, do as well.

Topgolf’s IPO could value the company at over $4 billion. Topgolf International Inc., an operator of driving ranges with a party atmosphere, has selected banks for an initial public offering that could value the company at about $4 billion, according to people familiar with the matter. The Dallas-based company is reportedly working with banks including Morgan Stanley, JPMorgan Chase & Co., and Bank of America. Its IPO could come as soon as this year. The company’s driving ranges, which “bring the spirit of a bowling alley to the golf course,” have bays that can accommodate up to six players who can track their balls electronically while ordering food and drinks. Some venues feature rooftop bars, restaurants, shops, pools, and concert halls. The company has locations in the U.S., the U.K. and Australia, with others opening soon in Canada, Mexico, and the United Arab Emirates, according to its website. The company’s backers also have included Callaway Golf Co., which acquired a minority stake with other investors in a deal completed in 2017.

Just hours after news broke that Democratic presidential candidate Michael Bloomberg was spending $10 million on a Super Bowl ad, word came that President Trump would do the same. “President Trump made the unprecedented decision to keep the campaign open following his first election, which allows us to do things like buying a Super Bowl ad,” Tim Murtaugh, a spokesman for the Trump campaign, was quoted in the New York Times. Super Bowl ads are rarely deployed in presidential politics due to the high cost and inefficiencies of paying to reach a national audience rather than focusing on key states. The buy highlights Bloomberg's massive spending power. And it’s just the start of what's likely to be a huge spending year for Trump. Bloomberg has already spent $170 million on ads this election cycle, while the Republican National Committee just announced that it raised $463 million in 2019 and has nearly $200 million cash on hand. It's worth noting that the Super Bowl lands just one day before the Iowa caucuses.

In an era in which legislation such as California’s newly minted Assembly Bill 5 aims to correct inequalities in the workplace, Sports Illustrated staffers announced their intention to unionize, seeking better workplace protections amid turmoil at the legacy brand. The union, according to CNN, represents about 80 staffers in print, digital, and video. Sports Illustrated's magazine staffers were already a part of the NewsGuild of New York, but digital staffers were not. Now, both print and digital will be included in the new union that is also with the NewsGuild. In October, Seattle-based startup Maven took ownership of Sports Illustrated from magazine conglomerate Meredith Corporation and immediately laid off about 40 staffers. Of the roughly 80 staffers eligible for the bargaining unit, more than 90% "signed a petition supporting the union drive." Their effort to join the NewsGuild "comes at a time of turmoil for the magazine." In a letter to management, staffers requested a "pay-equity study; an increased focus on minority hiring; clarity for workers on extended temporary contracts; and clear protocols for handling harassment.”

Tensions surrounding the Middle East continue to loom over the European Tour’s “Desert Swing.” Concerns are "growing" over the European Tour's "Desert Swing" over the next three weeks after Iran "threatened to 'unleash Hezbollah' across the Gulf as military tensions build." The Abu Dhabi Golf Championship is set to take place this week, followed by the Dubai Desert Classic and Saudi Arabia International. The European Tour, according to the London Telegraph, was "confident at the start of the week that its schedule would not be affected by the conflict." Several U.S. golfers are "due to play in Abu Dhabi," and the region is "vital for the Tour’s ongoing prosperity and officials will be loath to cancel or even postpone.” In the U.S., Phil Mickelson and others will be skipping next month’s Waste Management Open to play in the lucrative Saudi Arabia tourney. Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth is now a factor for sport and sports events, whatever the controversy. In the near future, it seems likely that a very big golf name is going to align itself with the kingdom – or take a stand by turning its money down.

As increasing numbers of Galaxy fans drive electric cars, Dignity Health Sports Park’s partnership with Volta is a perfect complement to the club’s Protect the Pitch sustainability initiative.

Soccer stars from around the globe will play a bushfire charity match. According to The Sydney Morning Herald, the head of Melbourne-based agency Tribal Sports Group, Lou Sticca, took to Twitter last Sunday to flag plans for a star-studded charity soccer match, which could raise huge sums to help alleviate the suffering of people and communities whose lives have been devastated by blazes scorching Australia. The game is likely to be played at Sydney's ANZ Stadium in May. Many top European and South American players will be in action at the European Championships and Copa America, but big names who are no longer internationals could be lured to Australia to help raise funds. The charity match is one of a number of fundraising efforts being made on behalf of football in Australia to assist those affected by the bushfires. Currently, the next two rounds of the A-League and W-League will be dedicated to raising funds and showing gratitude to emergency services. And the Australian players' union, Professional Footballers Australia, also used its “Footballers Trust” to donate $1000 for every goal scored in the A-League and W-League over the weekend of January 11-12.

Megan Rapinoe is working with Budweiser to change the perspective on branding the NWSL. According to Yahoo Sports, the NWSL looks to shift from surviving to thriving with a target fan base that needs to change from children to young adults. And there may be a shift on the horizon, thanks in part to Budweiser. With help from U.S. Soccer and Soccer United Marketing, who helped broker the deal, Budweiser signed a multi-year sponsorship with the NWSL as the league's biggest sponsor to date. Budweiser's campaign is less of the soft and fuzzy approach the NWSL has seen in the past. Budweiser's current campaign is a call-out of other brands who claim they care about female empowerment to actually put their money where their corporate mouths are. The ironic campaign features Rapinoe enjoying products from future official sponsors of the NWSL – eating a generic hamburger that could be a fast food chain sponsor or sporting a generic watch that could become the official timepiece of the NWSL. Budweiser is simultaneously supporting women’s sports leagues and proving themselves to be a consistent sports sponsor and beverage – regardless of league or gender.

The Atlanta Hawks’ Trae Young cancels $1 million in medical debt for locals. According to ABC 7 and other news outlets, the 21-year-old star donated $10,000 to a medical debt erasure agency that relieved over $1 million in debt for local residents. Through the Trae Young Foundation, Young donated the money to RIP Medical Debt, an organization that buys and forgives medical debt in the United States, according to a news release. The nonprofit was started in 2014 by two former debt collectors. They use donated funds to buy debt portfolios for those in need. Media reports said the average amount of dissolved debt is $1,858 for about 570 people. Although he didn’t contribute the $1 million himself, Young expanded what his money could do and positively financially impacted hundreds of Atlanta residents.

Mrs. America: Why not Rosalyn?

Why Phyllis Schafly? Why not Shirley Chisholm (I bet Uzo Aduba be a draw as she is known for her work on Orange is the New Black) or Dolores Huerta or Betty Ford (who supported the ERA and was a groundbreaking First Lady who spoke candidly about breast cancer, feminism, wore pants, sharing a bed with her hubby and saying so on tv, and straight up said she won’t be surprised if her daughter had sex before marriage because she’s “just like everybody else”)

How about Rosalyn Carter? Who was the ultimate Mrs. America (as First Lady of the United States and Georgia), was a homemaker for over 20 years, and supported the ERA herself? Maybe something about how this traditional looking wife and mother embraced changing opportunities for women and rather than putting down herself for being “just a wife” or putting down other women for not being satisfied with the domestic sphere really used her influence to bat for others.

She was born in Plains, Georgia in 1927 and the eldest of four children and had parents who worked multiple jobs. She once wanted to be an architect and enjoyed the fruits of a close-knit community growing up, when her father died from leukemia, she at 13 started helping her mother raise her younger siblings and worked for her mother the dressmaker. She would credit her own mother for teaching her to be independent through her own influence and graduated salutatorian from Plains High School but family obligations urged her to drop out of Georgia Southwestern College. But it didn’t stop her relationship with childhood friend and fellow NY Yankees and Atlanta Braves fan Jimmy Carter, son of a peanut farmer and student at the United States Naval Academy. He was the first boy she allowed to kiss on the first date and he proposed marriage when she visited him in Annapolis, but of course she delayed plans to study to be an interior designer at the Georgia State College for Women.

Being a military wife, they moved around the country and raising three young boys, she enjoyed the independence of raising three children and of the constant travel across the country. Then in 1953, her father-in-law’s ailing health motivated Jimmy to move the young family back to Plains where he would take over his father’s business and when Rosalyn wasn’t with the kids or in the house, she would do accounting. During this time she started dealing with fertility issues that wouldn’t be rectified until she turned out to have a tumor on her uterus (for 12 years...) and then 15 years after their youngest son was born, their only daughter Amy was born in 1967. She got on with Jimmy’s sister but not so much with Jimmy’s outspoken and super liberal mother Lillian Gordy Carter.

In general the 1960s were a tumultuous time for the United States, where young butted heads with the older generation, however it was a time when the relationships of Jimmy and Rosalyn and with their children were strengthened regarding shared values. Jimmy entered the Senate in 1962 and a year later the family was devastated to hear of the Kennedy assassination, which brought glee to the more conservative and bigoted townsfolk of Plains and a year later he backed up Lyndon B. Johnson. In an interview with People magazine, she stated that time especially since they were the lone integrationists in a town in the Deep South brought the family together, even helping their sons dealing with the bullying that was encouraged at school and the family was the only white family that voted to allow black people to join their church. In 1966, she supported her husband in his campaign for Governor of Georgia where she would campaign for him and got spat at by a man supporting the Republican Bo Callaway, this time was also a time where Jimmy and Rosalyn worked as collaborators.

In 1970, Jimmy ran for Governor once again and won but the campaign also involved Rosalyn making speeches, even writing them. She also built bonds with campaign workers, one who confided that her daughter is dealing with mental health issues, the woman’s tired face haunted Rosalyn thereafter. In fact it was his time as Governor where the couple became more keenly aware about the stigma surrounding mental health and how many people were suffering and not receiving the aid they needed. She did tours of the state’s mental health facilities and worked closely with handicapped children, aside from that she had a traditional image of the chatelaine during her time as the state’s First Lady, something that got people even her husband to make their presumptions when he said he supported the ERA (Equal Rights Amendment) but not her and she corrected him. She also took a stand when she hired the wrongfully convicted Mary Prince as Amy’s nanny, who believed she was pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter after intervening in a gun fight and accidentally firing the gun, and the Carters believed she was thrown under the bus due to her race.

Then came the time that Jimmy threw his hat into the ring, the Presidential ring, where he admitted to Playboy he was guilty of infidelity in his heart because he lusted after other women and she said “Jimmy talks too much” but added he’s honest compared to say, Nixon. She got photographed with John Wayne Gacy (before it turned out he was a murderer) and was elected to the board of the National Association of Mental Health, supported the ERA and earned a Merit Award from the National Organization for Women (NOW), and received the Volunteer of the Year Award from the Southwestern Association of Volunteer Services (SAVS). Instead of riding a limo all the way to the Inauguration she and Jimmy walked together, re-wore a re-fashioned gown from a few years earlier, sat in on Cabinet meetings and took notes, joined Ladybird Johnson and Betty Ford at the Houston conference celebrating International Womens’ Year in 1977, decorated the White House Christmas tree with eggs and peanuts and pinecones, held a widely attended Employment Seminar, entertained country singers like Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson and Dolly Parton at the White House, sent Amy to public school and saw Pope John Paul II with her, challenged people with her soft demeanor and assertiveness, collected paintings by American artists for the White House, pissed off dudes who thought women needed to stay home, spoke approval for eye lifts and face lifts, had a nonmalignant tumor removed from her breast, and did even more as First Lady, which I will cover in bullet points.

"For every person who needs mental health care to be able to receive it close to his home, and to remove the stigma from mental health care so people will be free to talk about it and seek help. It's been taboo for so long to admit you had a mental health problem." She testified before Congress on behalf of the Mental Health System Bill and was honorary chair on the President’s Commission on Mental Health (repealed by Ronald Reagan).

Was a Steel Magnolia who never disagreed with Jimmy in public but made clear she had her own views and was her own person.

Was Envoy to Latin America in 1977, where in Brazil she voiced concern for human rights and for a reduction in nuclear weapons; she led 1978 American delegation when Rodrigo Carazo Odio was inaugurated as President of Costa Rica and to the funeral of Pope Paul VI.

In 1979, she led a delegation to Thailand to discuss issues faced by refugees from Cambodia and Laos and visited the camps. She sped up a large appeal for assistance. At this time her husband met with families of the Iranian hostages.

She was Mom of a girl who was growing up fast and young Grandma and dealt with her alcoholic brother in law and sons’ marital issues.

Her Secret Service code name was “Dancer” and she was the first First Lady to have her own office in the East Wing.

She persuaded Indiana politicians Birch Bayh and Wayne Townsend to support the ERA and vote for ratification.

She used her role as supporter for the ERA to encourage Southerners, Housewives, and mothers like herself to support it as well.

She tied with Mother Teresa for “Most Admired Woman in the World”.

She was bitter about her husband’s 1980 campaign loss to Reagan and blamed Ted Kennedy. This didn’t get in the way of her thanking the supporters and cordially led Nancy Reagan on a tour where they (and Nancy’s stepdaughter Maureen and Rosalyn’s daughter in law) began a long friendship. To her satisfaction, the Iranian hostages were released. The 1980s and 1990s were not a slow time: she co-founded the not-for-profit Carter Center with special attention to mental health issues, denied rumors of her throwing her ring into politics not wanting to be away from Jimmy, voiced her resentment of Ronald Reagan, got involved in building houses for Habitat for Humanity, encouraged peace in the Middle East where they traveled, monitored the Oslo Peace Agreement, continued her efforts in aiding the disabled and those with mental health issues, started the Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregiving at her old college, wrote and co-wrote books with Jimmy, read the Bible in Spanish with Jimmy, rode electric scooters with him, is deacon at her church, voiced some skepticism about Geraldine Ferraro running for vice-president (sadly proved right that the US was not ready), nursed her husband through cancer, believed the Russians interfered in the 2016 election and supported Bernie Sanders, and as of April 2020 she and Jimmy have celebrated almost 74 years of marriage.

NORTHWEST FLORIDA (Press Release) – The latest FEMA Disaster Recover Update:

• FEMA is hiring people who live in areas affected by Hurricane Michael to join our recovery team as temporary employees. Hiring temporary staff locally allows FEMA to diversify the workforce while affording opportunities for survivors to help other survivors. Jobs are available in Tallahassee, Panama City and other areas in Florida recovering from Hurricane Michael. Interested applicants can view open positions on USAjobs.gov, and search using keywords "FEMA" or "local hire" and "Florida" in the location field.

• The Emergency Prescription Assistance Program (EPAP) for survivors who do not have health insurance has been extended to Dec 15. EPAP covers prescription drugs, vaccines and other medical supplies damaged in the hurricane. A list of more than 72,000 participating pharmacies where claims can be filled is available at the HHS website

• The application deadline for Disaster Unemployment Assistance is Friday, Dec. 7. DUA is available to Florida residents and businesses in Bay, Calhoun, Franklin, Gadsden, Gulf, Holmes, Jackson, Leon, Liberty, Taylor, Wakulla and Washington counties. DUA is available for unemployment beginning October 14, 2018 until April 13, 2019, as long as the individual’s unemployment continues to be a result of the disaster. • FEMA contractors have begun placing the first travel trailers on private sites. Direct housing is temporary. These units are not permanent dwellings. FEMA staff will meet with survivors regularly to determine their continued eligibility and demonstrated needs and assist them in developing a permanent housing plan. • The state-led Florida Housing Task Force surveyed available rental resources in the hurricane-impacted counties and found rental housing resources were insufficient to meet the high demand for housing in Bay, Calhoun, Gadsden, Gulf and Jackson counties. • On Oct. 28, FEMA authorized the Direct Temporary Housing Assistance Program for these counties. • Direct Temporary Housing Assistance is available to eligible applicants whose primary residence is uninhabitable if FEMA determines that eligible applicants cannot use financial Rental Assistance due to a lack of available housing resources in the area. • Direct housing is just one form of temporary housing assistance being provided by the state and federal agencies. Many survivors have received grants for basic repairs and rental assistance, and temporary roofs provided by the Corps of Engineers. • Obtaining a travel trailer or manufactured housing unit is not an automatic process. Eligibility must be determined after survivors apply for assistance and according to guidelines developed and approved by the state of Florida and FEMA. • Additional phone interviews are being conducted to determine applicants who are identified and qualified for direct housing assistance. • As individual eligibility for direct temporary housing is determined, sites to place the units are inspected to assess feasibility for placement. • Installation of a temporary housing unit includes: • Site preparation • Placement of the unit • Anchoring of the unit • Utilities hookup • Compliance with local permitting and completion of final inspection • Once installation of the unit is complete, an occupancy inspection will take place. When the unit passes inspection, it is ready for occupancy. At that point, the applicant will sign a license-in agreement to occupy the unit while they work on their permanent housing plan. • Direct housing is temporary. These units are not permanent dwellings. FEMA staff will meet with survivors regularly to determine their continued eligibility and demonstrated needs and assist them in developing a permanent housing plan. • To remain eligible, survivors must demonstrate continuing progress on a permanent housing plan. FEMA staff will keep survivors up to date on program details and deadlines through face-to-face meetings, phone calls and letters.

Republicans Working Against Workers by Leo Gerard

Ever-worsening is the chasm between the loaded, who luxuriate in gated communities, and the workers, who are hounded at their rickety gates by bill collectors.

Even though last week’s Bureau of Labor Statistics report showed unemployment at a low 4.4 percent, wages continue to flatline, killing both opportunity and the consumer economy. Meanwhile, corporations persist in showering CEOs and their cronies with ever-fatter pay packages and golden parachutes when they mess up.

This would all be sufferable if workers felt those in control in Washington, D.C. were striving to turn it all around. But the Republicans, who boast majorities in both houses of Congress, are just the opposite.

Their legislation shows they’re indentured to big business. Ever since they took power, they’ve labored tirelessly to destroy worker protections. They’ve swiped money from workers’ ragged pockets and handed it to 1 percenters on a silver platter – a plate bought with massive campaign contributions by the 1 percent.

The most blatant example is Republicans’ so-called health insurance bill. Both the House and Senate versions would strip health care from tens of millions of Americans while granting corporations and the nation’s richest tax cuts totaling $700 billion.

The Tax Policy Center determined that households with incomes above $875,000 a year would get 45 percent of those benefits. For the wealthiest, the annual tax cut would be nearly $52,000, a big fat break that is almost exactly the entire household income for the median American family.

In other words, Republicans want to hand millionaires a check that equals what a typical family earns by working an entire year.

Those massive tax breaks for the rich cost workers big time. Republicans’ so-called health insurance bill slashes Medicaid, so workers’ frail, elderly parents will lose the coverage they need to remain in nursing homes, babies born with cancer and crippling congenital diseases will be cut off care, and relatives who are victims of the opioid epidemic will be denied treatment. But, hey, the rich get richer!

Meanwhile, Republicans are pushing legislation in Congress to hobble labor unions and suppress wages. One House bill would delay union elections, giving corporations more time to bully and fire workers who consider joining. This proposed legislation would also stop workers from organizing small groups instead of the entire roster of employees.

Yet another GOP proposal would change the definition of democratic election. As it is now, a congressional candidate wins when he or she receives the highest number of votes cast. Candidates aren’t deemed losers if they receive votes from fewer than half of all potential voters.

Securing ballots from more than half of potential voters would be a very hard standard to meet because in many elections little more than a third of eligible voters go to the polls. In the 2016 Presidential election, 58 percent of potential voters exercised their franchise. That means neither Donald Trump nor Hillary Clinton would have won under the more than 50 percent of eligible voters standard.

Even so, the bill under consideration in Congress would impose that standard on unions. When workers want to form a union, this legislation would require that they get positive votes from more than half of all eligible workers, not more than half of those who actually vote.

It is a standard no politician would want to be held to, but Republicans are willing to require it of workers to prevent them from organizing and bargaining jointly for better wages and working conditions.

At the bidding of corporations, Republicans are working against workers because labor organizations succeed through concerted action in wresting from fat cat CEOs a more fair share of the fruit of workers’ labor. Workers in labor unions receive higher wages, better health benefits and pensions and safer conditions.

When more workers were unionized, the space between rich and poor was more like a crack than the current chasm. In the 1950s, 33 percent of workers participated in labor organizations. Now it’s 10.7 percent. In the ’50s, the ratio of CEO-to-worker pay was 20-to-1. That means for every dollar a worker made, the CEO got $20. Now the ratio is 347-to-1. For every dollar a worker earns, the top dog grabs $347. CEOs of S&P 500 corporations pulled down an average of $13.1 million in total annual compensation in 2016, while their typical worker received $37,632.

The high point of unionization in America, the 1950s, was the low point in income inequality. It is called the time of the great compression. And a new study published by the National Bureau of Economic Research reaffirms that unionization produced better wages.

In a report titled “Unions, Workers, and Wages at the Peak of the American Labor Movement,” scholars Brantly Callaway of Temple University and William E. Collins of Vanderbilt University analyzed new data and determined “the overall wage distribution was considerably narrower in 1950 than it would have been if union members had been paid like non-union members with similar characteristics.”

They go on to say, “Our historical interpretation is that in the wake of the Great Depression, workers sought and policymakers delivered institutional reforms to labor markets that promoted unions, reduced inequality, and helped lock in a relatively narrow distribution of wages that lasted for a generation.”

That time is gone. Unions have been declining for decades, largely as a result of onerous requirements legislated by Republicans. As unions shrank, so did worker bargaining power. The result is that while workers’ productivity increased, their wages stagnated for the past three decades.

Still, Republicans are squashing unions even more by, for example, reversing a rule requiring corporations to report when they hire union busters to strong-arm workers into voting against organizing.

And Republicans are working hard on other measures to ensure workers make even less money. For example, Missouri Republicans reversed a minimum wage increase in St. Louis and prohibited the state’s cities from requiring union-level wages on public construction projects.

In addition, in Washington, the Republican administration refused to defend in court a new rule that would have made millions more workers automatically eligible to receive time-and-a-half pay when they work overtime.

If workers feel like the system is rigged against them, that’s because it is. Republicans working at the behest of CEOs and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce have created a government by corporations for corporations.

And none of the government welfare and benefits that corporations and one percenters got for themselves in this process ever trickled down to workers.

Bets are piling up on LSU, leaving sports books around the nation with lopsided action on a college football championship game that is setting up to be big for bookmakers. Bookmakers are reporting significant betting interest on the championship game, with 80% to 90% of the bets on LSU. According to ESPN, heading into the weekend, LSU was a consensus six-point favorite over Clemson in Monday's College Football Playoff National Championship in New Orleans. From the East Coast to the Gulf Coast to Las Vegas, the betting public is all over LSU, including some big wagers. Last Tuesday, Las Vegas sportsbook operator CG Technology reported taking two bets totaling $200,000 on LSU. William Hill U.S. said Clemson-LSU was on pace to be the "biggest-bet college football game of all time." Jeff Davis of Caesars Sportsbook said the last championship game he could recall that had this one-sided of action was Super Bowl XLVIII between the Seattle Seahawks and Denver Broncos. Take note: the underdog Seahawks beat the Broncos 43-8, and Nevada sportsbooks won a net $19.6 million, the most ever on a Super Bowl.

ATP Player Council President Novak Djokovic has called for Australian Open organizers to "consider delaying the year's opening grand slam event if smoke haze from the bushfire emergency threatens players' health." According to ABC.net.au, Djokovic said that the Player Council "would meet ahead of the tournament to discuss options, including a possible delayed start to the tournament." Djokovic added that his reps had been in contact with Tennis Australia CEO and Australian Open Tournament Director Craig Tiley and had been "monitoring air quality in both Melbourne and Sydney," where the final rounds of the inaugural ATP Cup just wrapped. Tiley in a statement said the officials have "committed substantial extra resources" to monitor air quality.” And he quickly shut down suggestions that the start of the tournament could be delayed, reminding the media that Melbourne Park features three courts with fully retractable roofs, and that the tennis complex also includes eight indoor courts with “some form of cover.” The Australian Open begins January 20.

Tennis Australia has hedged its bushfire bets. Tennis Australia, according to The Australian, stands to "pocket a huge cash payout potentially worth tens of millions of dollars" should a significant amount of play be lost at the Australian Open because of adverse conditions. The payout would be a "result of a canny and groundbreaking insurance deal" the governing body struck for the first time a year ago with insurers Lloyds of London and Hiscox. While Tennis Australia CEO Craig Tiley "would not disclose the exact terms," TA would reportedly receive well north of $100 million in the "worst-case scenario of the cancellation of the Open.” Smoke from the fires has created hazardous conditions in Melbourne, and it remains "unclear where ground pass holders are expected to take cover if matches are suddenly abandoned due to hazardous conditions." So far, however, the Sydney Morning Herald notes that the haze "hasn't stopped fans from lapping up tickets" for the Open. Pre-sales are "already up for the crown jewel" of Australian tennis.

Oh no – Overtime, Ohio State battle over “O” trademark. New York-based sports network Overtime filed suit in federal court last Monday in a trademark dispute with Ohio State University over the letter “O.” The Cincinnati Enquirer reported that digital programming provider Overtime Sports wants a legal declaration allowing the continued use of its “O” mark, following a cease and desist letter issued by the university this year. According to the federal suit, “The differences between the parties’ trademarks and manners of use prevent any likelihood of confusion. ... There are numerous O marks, O-formative marks, and O designs in use by third parties in connection with the relevant goods and services, such that consumers will not presume that all goods and services offered under O or O-formative marks emanate from a common source.” One party not yet trying to trademark an “O” – LSU’s colorful Coach O, Ed Orgeron. That might change if he wins a national championship come Monday.

Quicken Loans has signed a multiyear NFL sponsorship for its Rocket Mortgage brand in an effort to seek greater brand awareness and preference. The move comes just in time for marketing activation during the NFL Playoffs and Super Bowl. To support its new designation as the NFL’s first official mortgage sponsor, Rocket Mortgage is immediately launching a national Super Bowl “squares” game, in which consumers “owning” a box with a particular score are eligible to win $50,000 each time the score changes. Two “lucky square” holders will win $500,000 each toward the mortgage on their dream home. Marketing support will include digital, social and TV ads. Pro Football HOFer Barry Sanders will serve as spokesperson for the program; golfer Rickie Fowler has been a Rocket Mortgage spokesperson since 2015. A Super Bowl LIV spot featuring the two seems likely, as Rocket Mortgage advertised during the game in 2016 and 2018.

The USGA teamed up with actor Don Cheadle to boost the value of public golf to golfers, courses, and communities throughout the country. Cheadle will also serve as a U.S. Open brand ambassador, lending his voice and stature to the championship. FOX Sports viewers got a glimpse of the USGA’s relationship with the Oscar-nominated Cheadle with a 15-second U.S. Open tune-in advertisement that ran nationally during last Sunday’s broadcast of the NFC Playoff game between the Saints and Vikings on FOX. RIP Pete Dye. Pete Dye, who designed many of America's most famous golf courses and became known as the "Picasso" of golf architecture for his distinctive layouts, passed away last week at age 94. “I think of Pete like Picasso, somebody that has created a nontraditional design, whether it's a painting, a sculpture or a golf course. He was so innovative in a profession that is very traditional,” summed up golf course designer Arthur Hills. Dye designed more than 100 public and private golf courses worldwide, including PGA Tour and Major courses that include Whistling Straits in Kohler, Wisconsin, home of the 2020 Ryder Cup; PGA West Stadium course in La Quinta, California, this week’s stop on the PGA Tour’s 2020 West Coast Swing; The Ocean Course in Kiawah Island, South Carolina; and Harbour Town Golf Links in neighboring Hilton Head. And then there’s the island Par-3 17th hole at Ponte Vedra Beach’s TPC Sawgrass, perhaps the most photographed hole in golf history outside of Augusta National’s Amen Corner. Rick enjoyed his sit-down interviews with Dye, most memorably at the 2010 PGA Championship at Whistling Straits.

According to Nielsen, the Stars’ 4-2 win over the Predators on New Year’s Day roped in only 1.97 million viewers for NBC. The figure represents a drop of almost one million on last year’s edition of the game, which saw an audience of 2.94 million tune in for the Boston Bruins’ win over the Chicago Blackhawks. Vince McMahon’s XFL has signed a multiyear deal with Genius Sports that’s designed to protect the fledgling football league from improper sports betting. As reported by Bloomberg and relayed by Hashtag Sports, London-based Genius Sports, which has similar partnerships with golf’s PGA Tour and soccer’s English Premier League, will help the XFL build a so-called integrity program to guard against fixed games. As part of that, Genius, owned by private equity firm Apax Partners, will offer around-the-clock monitoring of pregame and live betting markets to detect unusual activity. During the XFL’s centralized training camp this month, Genius will conduct betting-focused educational workshops with players, coaches and game officials. The XFL will play during a relatively slow time in U.S. pro sports, with only the NBA and NHL regular seasons in action. Football has long been the most bet-on U.S. sport – especially during Playoff periods like this past weekend’s slate of thrilling NFL games. According to the Nevada Gaming Control Board, football accounts for about 34% of all sports betting within the state – a number that will likely only increase.

WWE made $13 million off of YouTube advertising revenue in 2019. According to Tubefilter, WWE’s YouTube channel is larger than those of the NBA, the NFL, MLB, and the NHL —combined with a whopping 52.8 million subscribers. And WWE uploaded a staggering average of 510 videos per month with content ranging from full matches to behind-the-scenes clips. This had them outpacing their sports league counterparts by hundreds of videos a month. Furthermore, there is no off season with the WWE so there is always lots of content. In 2019, WWE’s channel brought a monthly average of 756.4 million views, putting in up in the ranks of the most-watched YouTube channels. But WWE is making around $1.40 per 1,000 views, a number far below YouTube’s reported average CPM of $7.60 due to the fact that the wrestling content is not ad friendly for many sponsors. Even if the WWE only pulled in $13 million, the amount of eyeballs on their content in an era where traditional TV viewership continues to dwindle for all sports may be worth more than AdSense’s earnings for the company.

The Raider’s future Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas is the pinnacle of technological connectivity. According to the Las Vegas Review Journal, the $2 billion, 65,000 seat stadium will feature the fastest optical internet service available with Allegiant Stadium covered by 1,700 managed Wi-Fi access points and 40-gigabit optical internet connections to deliver high-speed bandwidth for every mobile device in the venue. Spotify is looking to reach into daily sports podcasts in its upcoming expansion. According to Bloomberg, Spotify Technology SA is developing several daily sports shows, which is a big part of the music-streaming giant’s push into original podcasts. The Swedish company will likely start with a single show and then increase its workload. Spotify is considering a number of options, including audio programs tailored to fans of specific teams, but so far it is known that one program will be a recap of the day in sports and run about 10 minutes. The company hired Amy Hudson earlier this year to oversee sports, and she has talked with Barack and Michelle Obama’s production company, Higher Ground, about making shows. Spotify is eager to reduce its reliance on music, and has pinned much of its future on the growth of podcasting. With sports being one of the most popular genres in traditional radio and podcasting, it will be a strategic move for the company to build out its slate of original and exclusive shows and become a platform more similar to Apple’s podcast, music, and video network.

The NBA boosts its online presence with more Twitter live games. According to SportsPro, the NBA, Twitter, and Turner Sports have announced a multi-year extension to their partnership that increases Twitter’s amount of live games and on-demand content on the social media platform. The deal was first signed in January 2019 and will now offer a live streaming option for the second half of at least 20 regular season NBA games, the NBA All-Star Game, and 16 playoff games, including the Western Conference Finals. The U.S. geo-locked Twitter feed features an isolated-camera on a player voted on by users, with NBA influencers and veteran basketball star Channing Frye on commentary. Additional engagement features includes voting on users’ favorite plays, moments, and teams to watch during pre-game warm-ups for select games. Since joining Twitter in 2009, the NBA has built one of the largest Twitter communities in the world, with more than 437 million followers globally across all league, team, and player platforms. The additional live streamed games should further establish it as one of the online sports league titans.

Top tennis stars band together to aid Australian bushfire relief. According to CNN, a number of the world's top tennis stars, including Serena Williams, Roger Federer, Rafa Nadal, Naomi Osaka, Caroline Wozniacki, Nick Kyrgios and Stefanos Tsitsipas have agreed to play in an exhibition match to raise funds for Australia's bushfire relief. Scheduled to take place on January 15 at Melbourne Park's Rod Laver Arena, the Australian Open Rally for Relief will donate proceeds from ticket sales -- priced at $54 AUSD for adults and $35 AUSD for concessions -- to the bushfire relief efforts. So far, at least 24 people have been killed by the fires in Australia. Nearly 18 million acres of land have been burned as the country faces its worst blazes in decades. Kyrgios kick-started tennis' fundraising efforts last week when he pledged $200 AUSD for every ace he hits at upcoming tournaments with a number of other players since joining him. Furthermore, Tennis Australia will also donate $100 AUSD for every ace hit across six tournaments, including the Australian Open, as well as granting $1 million AUSD to help rebuild tennis facilities damaged in the bushfires. The tennis world has been one of the first major sports leagues to go all in to support the Australian bushfires and other leagues will likely follow suit, such as the England Premier League.

The Vikings’ Kyle Rudolph game-winning gloves finally find their way to charity. According to ESPN, Rudolph thought he was donating the gloves he wore while catching the winning touchdown in overtime against the New Orleans Saints to a charitable cause. It turns out the tight end was scammed by someone who went directly to eBay to sell his game-worn memorabilia for profit. But Jason King, a lifelong Vikings fan from New Jersey, purchased Rudolph's gloves after he saw them on eBay. Shortly after making his purchase, King began to see news of the scam circulating on Twitter. Upon seeing Rudolph's post, King tweeted the tight end that he was the buyer of the gloves and would gladly donate them to charity. Rudolph responded, directing King to the University of Minnesota Masonic Children's Hospital, where he and his wife, Jordan, have done extensive charitable work throughout his nine-year career with the Vikings. Rudolph then said he would send King the gloves he was planning to wear during the Vikings' NFC divisional playoff matchup against San Francisco. King said he will donate the money he spent on the gloves toward Kyle Rudolph's End Zone, a space designed to help children and teenagers find a place to play, relax, engage in healing therapies, and socialize at Masonic Children's Hospital.

The Spin on Aspartame

If you like to learn more about aspartame all you need to do is to type “aspartame”, and browse all the results that will come up. One week will not be enough to browse all the results. There is a lot of information, speculation, researches and studies for this subject.

If you don’t have time to research through all the materials, this article is perfect for you. This article has different approach. It fixes on a small bit of the debate and then it follows it through.

At the beginning, this article focuses on the people who are assuring us it is safe, or simply said-the experts. The same experts from the government, experts from the medical field, everyone are stating that we shouldn’t worry, and if it was harmful they would have tell us.

But the more we research about this subject, the more terrified and skeptical we are. What we will reveal is a great endeavor from the people at the highest levels of our government and the ones at the highest levels of the medical community, to beguile the people about the safety of aspartame.

We all have been tricked about this dangerous product for bigger profits.

We will start from the beginnings. The company G. D. Searle has developed this product at the first time. Still, the Food and Drug Administration which is a federal agency whose job is ensuring that the food and drugs are safe for us, didn’t approve their product.

Supposedly, the substance was applied on monkeys, in which later were appeared lesions, tumors, seizures and even some of them ended up dead.

The FDA has been rejecting the company’s applications for approval, but they insisted in presenting their own evidences that their product is not dangerous.

When FDA had it enough, they asked Department of Justice to charge G. D. Searle for presentation deceptive test information in their endeavor to get their product ratified. The FDA senior toxicologist Dr. Adrian Gross had something to say about this subject on the Congress: “Behind a shadow of a doubt aspartame stimulates brain tumors.”

Then G. D. Searle made Donald Rumsfeld its CEO. When Ronald Reagan became a president, he included Rumsfeld in his team, and then another FDA commissioner was chosen immediately.

The unnatural sweetener created by the company Donald Rumsfeld was leading, over the objections of the FDA scientific board, was ratified in one of the first acts of the new FDA commissioner.

Also, when it seemed like aspartame will be ratified later on for use in carbonated drinks, the National Soft Drink Association disagreed with this act, claiming that it wouldn’t be safe for people because aspartame is very unsteady when in liquid form and decomposes into formaldehyde, amidst other things.

G.D. Searle was bought in 1985 by Monsanto, and the NutraSweet Company functioned as a part of Monsanto until 2000, and then Monsanto has been sold to J.W. Childs Equity Partners, where it remains today.

Meanwhile, the FDA has composed a list of 92 symptoms related with aspartame consummation. Blindness, deafness, sickness, dizziness, weight gain and even death, are all included in this list. Anyway, aspartame still can be found in the markets, included in more products.

Aspartame Resource Center (www.aboutaspartame.com) claims that aspartame is found in over 6.000 products around the world. You can find some “cheerful” information about the safety of aspartame. Ironically, they even have a part labeled as “Meet the doctors,” where you can read a list of their medical advisory board.

In the medical advisory part, you can read the ARC saying: “The Aspartame Information Center Expert Medical Advisory Board was made to help guide the Center��s communications to health professionals and the public about aspartame gains, safety and role in a healthy diet. The board members are giving counsel on present medical and nutrition science, as well as preview on tools that help address the demands of health professionals in their work. Their backgrounds are covering critical areas of medicine and science, and each has unique experience in health and nutrition.”

Does it sound to you like they don’t really know they are? This “Aspartame Information Center”, what is this? I checked the site(www.aspartame.org) and I saw a pretty large list of “experts”, who are a tool for backing up claims that aspartame is safe, including the Calorie Control Council. As a matter of fact, the Calorie Control Center possesses the Aspartame Information Center site, and you can also read on the bottom that it is listed as a copyright holder.

The Aspartame Resource Center promotes all kinds of “fact” lists that you can download, especially the one called “Straight Answers about Aspartame.” This list is created by the American Dietetic Association and the Calorie Control Council. At the bottom of the fact list you can see that it has been sponsored by aspartame.org. The fact is that the Aspartame Information Center, the Aspartame Resource Center and Ajinomoto are all the same and are considered as the biggest producers of aspartame worldwide.

There is a question- who owns the Calorie Control Council? In its site www.caloriecontrol.org you can read that the Calorie Control Council is founded in 1966 and it stand for 60 producers and suppliers of low-calorie, low-fat and light foods and drinks, where more than 10 different producers and suppliers of dietary sweeteners are included.

If you go deeper you will find another site related to the Calorie Control Council. It is called Calories Count and you can visit it at www.caloriescount.com, where you can see that it is sponsored by Ajinomoto, NutraSweet, Splenda and Sweet ‘N Low. You can take a closer look at their sponsorship page: http://www.caloriescount.com/support.html.

To summarize, the FDA claimed that aspartame was harmful, and they didn’t want to ratify it. But, when the new president and his associate appointed new head of the FDA, the aspartame was immediately ratified after 16 years of being rejected. It is a little bit strange, isn’t it?

And even today, if you like to find more information about aspartame, you will end up on sites full with cheerful and comforting data, which is showing you how safe the aspartame is. Associations like American Dietetic Association are writing this information and are sponsored by aspartame itself!

In order to consult those who were meant to be trusted, the medical experts with the needed knowledge I backed out again to the Aspartame Resource Center.

The first name on the list was C. Wayne Callaway, M.D., where I ended up in another endless rabbit hole.

I visited his Web site and after the opening quote from Hippocrates, I found all kinds of information there. You can read his whole CV there.

1. Wayne Callaway, M.D., finished his medical training at Northwestern University, Mayo Graduate School of Medicine and Harvard University. He is also board certified in Internal Medicine, Clinical Nutrition and Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism and has held academic assignations at Harvard Medical School, Mayo Medical School and George Washington University.

He was a head of the Public Information Committee of the American Society for Clinical Nutrition and the American Society for Nutrition Sciences, has been a part of the Board of Directors of the American Board of Nutrition, also was a part of the American Heart Association, and has been a counselor to the American Medical Association.

He cooperates with the Mayo Clinic, the National Institutes of Health, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and the USDA. He was a counselor to the U.S. Surgeon General and assisted in creating dietary directions for the USDA.

He has been working on the heading boards of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, together with other medical magazines. His articles were published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, The Annals of Internal Medicine, the Journal of the American Dietetic Association, and the Internal Journal of Obesity and many others.

In his biography you will find that Dr. Callaway’s opinions on nutrition and health are often published in the New York Times, Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, LA Times, Wall Street Journal and many other magazines like Time, Newsweek, U.S. News& World Report, Vogue, Elle, Health and many others.

You can also hear his expert statements on nutrition on NBC, ABC, CBS, CNN, PBS, ESPN and many other televisions. He was a guest on the McNeill-Lehrer Newshour, the Today Show, Good Morning America, Phil Donahue, Larry King Live and other shows and talk programs.

All of this sounds perfect. But if you dig a little bit deeper, you will notice in his CV that hi is a member of the American Society for Clinical Nutrition.

He was also a head of the Public Information Committee of the American Society for Clinical Nutrition. Investigating for the American Society for Clinical Nutrition, you will get straight to the American Society for Nutrition (www.nutrition.org)

Both are publishing the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition which is the highest ranked peer-reviewed magazine in nutrition and dietetics, and the Journal of Nutrition which gives the latest research covering a wide field of topics of crucial interest to researchers, scientists, students, policymakers and ordinary people who have interests in nutrition.

If you do some additional research you will find out that the American Society for Clinical Nutrition, A.K.A. the American Society for Nutrition, is backed up by some “sustaining members”, who are (giving) collecting financial back up for the society’s activities in education, scientific programs and professional outreach. The site claims that the sustaining members are able to sponsor educational probabilities, grants and other items.

Mars, McCormick, Monsanto, Campbell Soup Company, ConAgra Foods, Dannon, The National Dairy Council, Nestle, The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, Cadbury Schweppes, Eli Lilly, General Mills, Gerber, GlaxoSmithKline, Kellog, Kraft, PepsiCo, POM Wonderful, Procter&Gamble, The Sugar Association, Unilever, Wrigley and Wyeth are all included in those sustaining members.

Dr. Wayne Callaway is a acknowledged expert in nutrition, who demonstrates before Congress and appears as a guest in some national televisions to declare his statements on food and nutrition.

His statements are released nationally and often. He is surely a national expert and his opinions are taken quite seriously, and are released from respected medical magazines. He also states that the aspartame is not dangerous at all.

He works and writes together with the people who are backed up by the food industry that uses aspartame. He is a hired “medical expert” by the food industry, and his job is to present the safety of the aspartame before the mainstream media.

In his CV you can find that he is an advisor of some government agencies like the National Research Council/National Academy of Sciences, the U.S. Congress, the USDA and U.S. Postal Service (which is a little odd).

Also, the one that we couldn’t neglect is the FDA. In his Web site you can also read which other institutes are paying him. Here are some of them: American Institute of Wine and Food, Mars, Mead Johnson Nutritional Group, the Milk Industry Foundation, the Monsanto Corporation, Nabisco, the National Dairy Council, the Nestle Foundation for Nutrition and Health, Ocean Spray, Parke-Davis, Proctor & Gamble, Quaker Oats and the United Dairy Industry.

One more! NutraSweet

It may look unbelievable and we will summarize again: Dr. W. Callaway is a nationally acknowledged expert for nutrition who claims that there is no danger from aspartame at all. He is paid by NutraSweet and Ajinomoto which are the biggest manufacturers of aspartame.

It is clear that the people are tricked for a bigger profit. Where do the profits come in? It is calculated that the U.S. marker for unnatural sweeteners with aspartame leading the charge will be more than $3 billion around the world.

The quote-“Several ingredients have resisted such detailed testing and iterated, close scrutiny, and the process through which aspartame has gone should give the public with more confidence of its safety”, can be found at the top of the home page for the Aspartame Information Center, who is in fact one of the two largest manufacturers of aspartame.

It’s attributed to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration.

How can you know which product is including aspartame? As the Aspartame Resource Center suggested, the aspartame can be found on the ingredients list, if it is included in the product. The FDA obligates the companies to list the aspartame if it is included in their products.

But, not every company lists it in its regular name, so you may find an ingredient called “phenylalanine”, which is actually an ingredient of aspartame. That product contains aspartame.

But you should be careful because of the tiny print on the most of the ingredient labels on the products. You can find aspartame where you never expected, like in the vitamins, or the liquid antibiotics or Metamucil.

The food industry which produces and sells this harmful product is controlling the government and the medical experts, and we shouldn’t expect any help from their side. The only thing you can do is to be more careful about the products you are buying for your children and your family, because that is the only way to protect your family and yourself from this harmful product.
