How Can Productivity Tools Enhance the Efficiency of AI Call Centers?
The work of AI centers appears to have gained prominence in todayâs context more than it has ever had before. As a result, more interaction volume is expected to be handled by AI in automated support which has the potential to be a prime entry-point. However, with such high volumes and speed, new challenges arise, especially in maintaining response personalization and managing operations. This piece dives deeper into the kinds of productivity tools transforming AI call centers, their benefits, and how they maximize efficiency. Letâs explore how these tools are revolutionizing customer interactions.
I. The Key Deficiencies of AI Call Centers
AI call centers were created to be able to provide the necessary response in the shortest amount of time possible. In practice, however, such a goal is rarely met thanks to numerous operational constraints that these AI call centers experience. Knowing these all the more justifies the need for integration of the most appropriate tailored kind of productivity tool.
Large Call Center traffic
The more calls to be entertained, the higher the number of stressed resources to be entitled to give muted responses with long or no replies. Repeatedly, agents donât necessarily have to answer more frequently asked questions. Instead, it is the lesser ability and attention left for the more in-depth queries about the client issues.
Personalization Demands
These days, customers are looking for something more than ordinary interactions, however, call centers powered by AI do not always find it easy to provide highly engrossing interaction. Baring the necessary tools, and meeting personalization expectations can sometimes be an exercise in futility or very tedious.
Compliance Requirements
In terms of activities done by such establishments, there are certain regulations that need to be accommodated. All the same, achieving the compliance bars across all interactions is not that easy considering that there is a call volume and its interactivity too.
Optimizing Agent Performance
Motivating and enhancing the efficiency of agents in workplaces characterized by monotony induced by repetitive duties is no mean feat. High turnover rates can also be a distress signal due to depressions which can, in turn, affect the quality and the continuity of services offered.
These operational difficulties call for the need for productivity tools that will assist an AI powered course of action to maintain the customer satisfaction levels required.

Different types of automation tools manage tasks and aid in process and workflow enhancement. Such tools can be incorporated within the customer relationship management (CRM) applications to help automate processes within the system, saving agents from constantly repeating activities and allowing them to concentrate on more personalized parameters of customer engagement.
Workflow Management Solutions
Project management tools help to make the organization of workloads more organized by ensuring certain activities are performed at certain times. Such tools organize and ensure that agents behave in a timely and proper manner. This makes the turnaround time decrease and the level of customer satisfaction increase.
Real-Time Analytics and Reporting Tools
Analytics tools help business entities accomplish their desired goals by throwing light on the performance of agents, the nature of the calls, and the customer's status. With the availability of such reports in real-time, the managers are able to get a tight grip on the lack of an issue and may change their resources as per requirement. This healthy practice of making use of data helps increase service delivery day by day.
AI-Driven Knowledge Bases
Knowing that there are volumes of information available and that a much simpler solution to a customer question breeds confidence and keeps agents at ease, knowledge bases do not result in idling or inconsistencies in responses if the agents can answer questions without hunting down information.
Collaboration Platforms
The fast-paced nature of businesses requires that teams communicate and work together on projects. If any customer holds a complaint, such collaboration tools enable the departments and agents to assist in resolving the issue much quicker. These tools help eliminate response coordination time, thus enhancing the overall experience of the customer.

Tech Breakdown: What Is a SuperNIC? Get the Inside Scoop!
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/ebc384c3a75e634181df01a7d738c37a/8fab370223ccdd9d-3c/s540x810/6b98246f5143a2350e121a309cd2e8ebd16f151e.jpg)
The most recent development in the rapidly evolving digital realm is generative AI. A relatively new phrase, SuperNIC, is one of the revolutionary inventions that makes it feasible.
Describe a SuperNIC
On order to accelerate hyperscale AI workloads on Ethernet-based clouds, a new family of network accelerators called SuperNIC was created. With remote direct memory access (RDMA) over converged Ethernet (RoCE) technology, it offers extremely rapid network connectivity for GPU-to-GPU communication, with throughputs of up to 400Gb/s.
SuperNICs incorporate the following special qualities:
Ensuring that data packets are received and processed in the same sequence as they were originally delivered through high-speed packet reordering. This keeps the data flowâs sequential integrity intact.
In order to regulate and prevent congestion in AI networks, advanced congestion management uses network-aware algorithms and real-time telemetry data.
In AI cloud data centers, programmable computation on the input/output (I/O) channel facilitates network architecture adaptation and extension.
Low-profile, power-efficient architecture that effectively handles AI workloads under power-constrained budgets.
Optimization for full-stack AI, encompassing system software, communication libraries, application frameworks, networking, computing, and storage.
Recently, NVIDIA revealed the first SuperNIC in the world designed specifically for AI computing, built on the BlueField-3 networking architecture. It is a component of the NVIDIA Spectrum-X platform, which allows for smooth integration with the Ethernet switch system Spectrum-4.
The NVIDIA Spectrum-4 switch system and BlueField-3 SuperNIC work together to provide an accelerated computing fabric that is optimized for AI applications. Spectrum-X outperforms conventional Ethernet settings by continuously delivering high levels of network efficiency.
Yael Shenhav, vice president of DPU and NIC products at NVIDIA, stated, âIn a world where AI is driving the next wave of technological innovation, the BlueField-3 SuperNIC is a vital cog in the machinery.â âSuperNICs are essential components for enabling the future of AI computing because they guarantee that your AI workloads are executed with efficiency and speed.â
The Changing Environment of Networking and AI
Large language models and generative AI are causing a seismic change in the area of artificial intelligence. These potent technologies have opened up new avenues and made it possible for computers to perform new functions.
GPU-accelerated computing plays a critical role in the development of AI by processing massive amounts of data, training huge AI models, and enabling real-time inference. While this increased computing capacity has created opportunities, Ethernet cloud networks have also been put to the test.
The internetâs foundational technology, traditional Ethernet, was designed to link loosely connected applications and provide wide compatibility. The complex computational requirements of contemporary AI workloads, which include quickly transferring large amounts of data, closely linked parallel processing, and unusual communication patterns all of which call for optimal network connectivity were not intended for it.
Basic network interface cards (NICs) were created with interoperability, universal data transfer, and general-purpose computing in mind. They were never intended to handle the special difficulties brought on by the high processing demands of AI applications.
The necessary characteristics and capabilities for effective data transmission, low latency, and the predictable performance required for AI activities are absent from standard NICs. In contrast, SuperNICs are designed specifically for contemporary AI workloads.
Benefits of SuperNICs in AI Computing Environments
Data processing units (DPUs) are capable of high throughput, low latency network connectivity, and many other sophisticated characteristics. DPUs have become more and more common in the field of cloud computing since its launch in 2020, mostly because of their ability to separate, speed up, and offload computation from data center hardware.
SuperNICs and DPUs both have many characteristics and functions in common, however SuperNICs are specially designed to speed up networks for artificial intelligence.
The performance of distributed AI training and inference communication flows is highly dependent on the availability of network capacity. Known for their elegant designs, SuperNICs scale better than DPUs and may provide an astounding 400Gb/s of network bandwidth per GPU.
When GPUs and SuperNICs are matched 1:1 in a system, AI workload efficiency may be greatly increased, resulting in higher productivity and better business outcomes.
SuperNICs are only intended to speed up networking for cloud computing with artificial intelligence. As a result, it uses less processing power than a DPU, which needs a lot of processing power to offload programs from a host CPU.
Less power usage results from the decreased computation needs, which is especially important in systems with up to eight SuperNICs.
One of the SuperNICâs other unique selling points is its specialized AI networking capabilities. It provides optimal congestion control, adaptive routing, and out-of-order packet handling when tightly connected with an AI-optimized NVIDIA Spectrum-4 switch. Ethernet AI cloud settings are accelerated by these cutting-edge technologies.
Transforming cloud computing with AI
The NVIDIA BlueField-3 SuperNIC is essential for AI-ready infrastructure because of its many advantages.
Maximum efficiency for AI workloads:Â The BlueField-3 SuperNIC is perfect for AI workloads since it was designed specifically for network-intensive, massively parallel computing. It guarantees bottleneck-free, efficient operation of AI activities.
Performance that is consistent and predictable:Â The BlueField-3 SuperNIC makes sure that each job and tenant in multi-tenant data centers, where many jobs are executed concurrently, is isolated, predictable, and unaffected by other network operations.
Secure multi-tenant cloud infrastructure:Â Data centers that handle sensitive data place a high premium on security. High security levels are maintained by the BlueField-3 SuperNIC, allowing different tenants to cohabit with separate data and processing.
Broad network infrastructure:Â The BlueField-3 SuperNIC is very versatile and can be easily adjusted to meet a wide range of different network infrastructure requirements.
Wide compatibility with server manufacturers:Â The BlueField-3 SuperNIC integrates easily with the majority of enterprise-class servers without using an excessive amount of power in data centers.

Natural Breeding Clinic - Prologue
warnings: MDNI, breeding kinks, general sex, mention of infertility and insemination methods
a/n: It's here. Finally.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/71207a0ee4291c64c4ae67af613df616/1f13232a4c473404-df/s540x810/bab685047ac2cce81c911891362d5ae4d6ab382c.jpg)
Teaser - Prologue - Patient 1
You take a deep breath and sit down in front of the laptop, waiting for the other person to join the call. Never in your life had you heard about such a unique reproductive center but lately, youâd been feeling the pull to start your own family. Youâd discussed this with relevant people in your life. Everyone had said if you really wanted a child, then you should go with the options you thought were right for you.
Youâd done the research, looking into different doctors and fertility clinics, but this one just stood out. There were testimonials from several happy families, saying their methods, though unconventional, were effective, and the doctors showcased on the website were all incredibly striking, each one handsome in their own way. But it was the success rate that caught your eye. A 98% guaranteed rate that you would be pregnant, and that pregnancy would be healthy. The site didnât go into too much detail on their method, but the wording caught your eye.
âA natural breeding clinicâ theyâd called themselves. Youâd finally bitten the bullet and called, requesting an information session. The screen suddenly lightens and you focus your attention as an attractive woman with shoulder-length brown hair comes into view. She smiles in a welcoming way before speaking.
âHello. Am I speaking with Mrs. L/n?â You nod and smile back, trying not to look awkward or uncomfortable.Â
âPerfect! My name is Shoko Ieiri, Iâm the main coordinating nurse here at Jujutsu Fertility. Thank you for scheduling an information session with us.â
âYes, of course. I just needed more details before I booked an appointment.â
âIndeed.â Shoko claps her hands together before continuing. âLet me start by telling you a little bit about ourselves. Weâve been around for almost 6 years now. What sets us apart is that we focus more on womenâs comfort than most other clinics. And we are sought out by people who are willing to use a sperm donor. We do not perform insemination services with sperm that are not from our own stock.â
âYour own stock? Are you associated with a sperm bank? And screen all the donors yourself?â
âNot a sperm bank in the conventional sense. We have 5 doctors who keep excellent health and their sperm is regularly screened to ensure quality. They are the only stock we allow for insemination.â
You blink to make sure you havenât misheard. âTheâŠdoctors? Are you saying the fertility doctor Iâd be meeting with will also be my sperm donor?â
âThat is correct.â Shoko nods her head to confirm. âYou will be meeting with the doctor of your choosing for at least 5 sessions. They will need to be at least once a week. Some women take the week off and come in 5 days straight.â
â5âŠsessions?â you ask, confused by the wording.
âYes. Itâs to ensure the insemination process has occurred an optimal number of times.â
âWaitâŠsoâŠIâm going to be inseminated multiple times? How much downtime do I need in between each insemination?â
âHardly any. Our method isnât like a typical clinic. Most women leave feeling very normal and a lot more satisfied than when they came in.â
âNot like a typical clinic? SoâŠyou donât use the catheter method?â
âWe use minimal medical equipment in our inseminations.â
âMinimalâŠso what does the procedure entail?â
Shoko clears her throat and continues. âSo it begins with you choosing one of our doctors. We highly recommend spending some time on this part. Itâs essential that you feel attraction towards your doctor. Once you make a choice, they will reach out to discuss how your insemination experience can be optimized for you. You will receive a biodata on their sexual profile, their preferred methods of arousal, and other relevant details.â
âIâm sorry, but what?â You are at the edge of your seat wondering if youâve entered an alternate dimension. Surely, this was all being made up? âArousal, sexual profile- why would I need all these details? I thought sperm donors only gave information like height, weight, medical history and stuff like that.â
âWhy wouldnât they? Youâre choosing to be bred by them. They would have to make sure their patient is satisfied with the experience.â
âBred?â You bleat the word stupidly.
âYes. We are a natural breeding clinic. We use the method nature has provided to us to ensure a pregnancy.â
The gears in your brain start turning and something finally clicks.
âAre-are you sayingâŠI would be having sex with my doctor?â
âThat is correct.â Shoko smiles gently at you, pleased that you have finally caught on.
âThe human body doesnât necessarily enjoy having medical equipment inserted into it. All that cold plastic, and the mechanical methods of insertion. It puts the body in a state of stress. Not good for implantation. So our doctors will inseminate you through the process of intercourse.â
Her words fall like a fog around you. You can feel your heart racing, a flush creeping into your cheeks. It wasâŠinsane. The doctor of your choosing was essentially going to fuck a baby into you. As your mind starts pulling up the images of their doctors, each one impossibly handsome and striking, you feel a familiar throb starting between your legs. Wetting your lips, you try to talk to continue with the information session.
âI see. AndâŠthere are benefits to this?â
âYes. Intercourse allows the body to relax, releasing happy hormones. In this stress-free state, in addition to the knowledge that your doctor is someone youâre attracted to and trust, the chance of an implantation doubles.â
You gape at Shoko, your mind reeling from all the information.
âAndâŠwhen you say the insemination process will be optimized for my best experienceâŠ?â
âThe doctor you choose will ask you extensive questions about your preferences. What turns you on, positions, dislikes, toys. Itâs to determine if they will satisfy your breeding experience. If they feel they might not be a good fit, theyâll recommend another one of our doctors.â
You swallow, your mouth going dry. âI see. AndâŠwhat else do I need to know?â
âWe will start by collecting your medical history and run some blood work to make sure your body is ready for an insemination process. Women who have a domestic partner will need to get both a waiver and a consent form signed by their partner that they have been informed what happens for the insemination.â
âOf course. Makes sense.â
âYou will be assigned an emotional support companion during this process. It will either be myself or Mr. Ijichi Kiyotaka. We are there to help ease your nerves and ensure you enjoy the process. And all patients must think of a unique safeword to use during the insemination process.â
âSafeword?â you parrot back, still processing.
âYes. At any point during the process, should you feel uncomfortable, your safeword ensures all actions cease and your doctor will give you some space to breathe and reassess the situation.â
All you can do is nod along. Shoko gives you a look of reassurance. âI can guarantee that most women are pleased with the results. And our doctors are quite skilled in what they do. Itâs natural to feel a little shy and embarrassed but at the end of the day, we all share a common goal- a healthy baby.â
Despite your initial shock, you feel some of your trepidation fade away. Shoko continues.
âIf you are ok with all of this, I can send you the forms to get the process started. Once those are filled, you can take some time to decide on your doctor. Then weâll set up a call with them.â
âThank you.â You make a split-second decision. âPlease go ahead and send the forms.â
âExcellent. Iâll send them to the email you put in your inquiry. Was there anything else?â
You shake your head no. âI think I have all I need.â
âGreat! I look forward to assisting you again.â Shoko ends the call and you immediately go the the website again to look at the doctors, one of which will end up fathering your child. Such a hard decision. How will you ever make the choice?

The Shape of Family â§âËâàŒ
As a single dad, Steveâs world revolves around school drop-offs, bedtime rituals, and tee-ball practicesâand he's struggling to keep up. But you're always there, happily lending a hand when he needs it most. / masterlist
part four - you give steve a ride and he thanks you with dinner 12k
a/n - this took much longer than expected so thank you for your patience!
ââ .âŠ
Itâs a Friday like any other. Steve arrives at the rec center before you, dressed in an old sweater and a scarf down to his hips. He asks if youâve slept through your alarm again, the same smile and the same teasing tone he always greets you with. You eat lunch at the same time you always do, in the same office you always have. And there, you offer the same kind of optimism you always bring when Steve sighs about the same never-ending to-do list on his desk.
Youâd think itâd have gotten boring by now, just friends Steve, but as every week rolls onto the next you find yourself just as content as you were in the last. Children bear constant surprises, you suppose. Steve never really runs out of funny things to share about Penelope. But even in those brief stretches where the conversation runs dry and you imagine itâs the start of the end of it all, you find yourself as pleased as ever to be friends with someone like Steve.Â
Heâs reliable and honest and he has the same sense of humor as you. Heâs polite to a fault, not just to you but to everyone he interacts with. He holds doors for strangers and he greets his coworkers like itâs their last day and he stops you from crossing the road if he sees a car driving too fast.Â
All to say, youâre feeling especially grateful today for even the most trivial things about Steve like the same walk to your cars parked in the same spots you always park.Â
âSee ya,â Steve calls just before your car door swings shut.Â
You crank your window down when he stops to mouth something unintelligible through the windshield.Â
âI said donât forget your ugly sweater tomorrow,â he repeats.Â
You roll your eyes. âYou arenât gonna win. Not a chance, Harrington.âÂ
âI dunnooo,â he sings with a shrug. âWeâll have to see.âÂ
Thereâs an ugly Christmas sweater contest being held at the centerâs employee holiday party. You arenât technically employed, but Steve insisted youâre allowed to go anyway.Â
You do more work than some of these people. They should honestly pay you at this point.Â
So you bought the ugliest sweater you could find. Yours has an actual wreath attached and fully operational string lights with its very own battery pack. A fire hazard if you ever saw one. Steve has yet to see it and youâve yet to see his. And yet youâre both certain youâll win this contest. Itâs been an argument all week. And while it doesnât truly matter if you win, itâs fun to pretend to be so invested.Â
âBye,â you slip in before your window seals shut.Â
He crawls into the beamer with a final wave. Perhaps self-indulgently, you watch him stow his bag in the passenger seat and drive his car key into the ignition. Itâs a pleasantly warm day for December; even through the windshield, the sun bleaches the ends of his hair blonde, his pale skin more reminiscent of a summer tan. But his golden smile flips, frustration weaving its way between his brows. Each turn of his wrist sends the car engine sputtering, you realize.Â
Steveâs eyes snap to yours and blood rushes to your face, embarrassment like an iron to each cheek, but you quickly adopt his concern instead. You open your door when he steps out of his car.Â
âDonât happen to have jumper cables do you?âÂ
You shake your head, teeth clenched in a grimace.Â
Steve hums and bites his lip. He ducks back into his seat to pull the hood latch. You join him at the front where he props it open and scans the cavity. You arenât exactly sure what heâs looking forâ you donât even think Steve knows what heâs looking forâ but you pretend to look too.Â
âMust be the battery,â he decides.Â
âOh.â You glance up at the center for any stragglers but there are none. Youâd stayed late to help Steve reorganize his file cabinets.Â
âWell, shit,â he sighs, scratching his neck.Â
âRich just left right? Maybe I can catch him at the light? He might have cables.âÂ
âNo, no. Let me justâ shit.â
âWhat?â
âPenelope. Her teacher conference is tonight. Shit.âÂ
âCan you reschedule?â
âIâve already rescheduled twice and I have to pick her up anyway. God, her teacher probably thinks Iâm such an asshole.âÂ
âItâs okay. I can take you. We can come back with cables and jump the car after?âÂ
Steve says your name defeatedly. âNo, no, Iâll justââ
You swing back to your car, insisting, âSteve, itâs fine. Come on.âÂ
He shuts his door and opens yours, offering an I owe you frown over the roof. Frankly, he feels like he owes you way too often. He knows you arenât keeping track but he wishes you would so he could repay you somehow.Â
âThe car seat,â you remind him at the same exact time he remembers. He unhooks it with minimal struggle and sets it in your backseat to be installed after pickup.Â
Youâve never driven Steve before. If you had time to worry about all the little things like if your car is clean enough or your driving is smooth enough, you might. But youâve no idea where you're going. One wrong turn and heâll be late. Even if you take all the right turns he might still be, and Steve really hates being late.Â
âSo, where am I going?â you ask as you pull out of the parking lot.Â
âItâs out past Albertsonâs on Lakeshore. Itâs got a big caterpillar statue in front.â
âOh, I think I mightâve seen it before.âÂ
âYeah, probably, itâs right off the main road,â Steve answers, letting his eyes rove across the interior of your car. Itâs nothing fancy but youâve worked hard to maintain it. âThanks again.âÂ
âSteve.â
He throws a dismissive hand in your peripherals. âI know. I know.âÂ
âWhat time is the conference?â
He reads the clock on your dash, fingers drumming the center console. âSix. Should just be a few minutes late.âÂ
And heâs right. You pull in just four minutes after six, parking in the spot nearest to the front doors. But itâs just your luck, or maybe Steveâs, that his seat belt buckle would jam. He tugs on the hilt until his fingers ache and it just wonât budge. Your car is well taken care of, but itâs far from new.Â
âShit. Sorry.â You unbuckle yourself and lean regretfully across the cup holders onto his side, thumbing the beltâs release button with the entire brunt of your arm. âThings finicky sometimes.âÂ
Steve stretches his arm behind the driverâs seat so you have full access. Your cheek nearly presses his shoulder, your pinky brushing the zipper of his jeans. Itâs undeniably intimate but youâre trying really hard not to notice.Â
After a few good welts, Steve is free, hopping out of his seat and asking, âYou cominâ?â
You arenât sure if he wants you to or if he offers out of courtesy, but youâre excited to see Penelope and where she goes to school so thereâs no hesitance in your yes.
You follow Steve up to the tinted double doors. He signs Penelope out on a clipboard at the front desk and whisks down a corridor heâs traveled a thousand times. Itâs a small school, only two classrooms before Penelopeâs and not many after by the looks of it.Â
A familiar scream redirects your attention from the nameplate on the door. And thereâs Penelope, scrambling to her feet and flying across the room right past Steveâs legs to slam into yours.Â
You catch yourself on the door frame, laughing through your surprise. âHi, Pen.âÂ
âHi!â She looks up at you with the worldâs biggest smile, locking hands behind your knees and propping her chin against your thigh. Her eyes flick to Steve briefly before returning to yours. âHi, Dad.âÂ
âGee, thatâs all I get these days, huh?â He flicks the ticklish bit of skin behind her ear until she giggles.Â
Penelope unlatches herself from you to bestow Steve with his own hug. But he shakes out of her hold as he steps into the room, teasing her, âNo, no. I see how it is.â
Her giggle-strewn apology fizzles out as her teacher springs off the floor with the energy of someone half her age, her excitement very distinctly aimed at you.Â
âOh my, now look who we have here!â She shuffles over with a hand eager to shake and a smile double the size of yours. âYou must be Y/N. Penelopeâs told me so much about you, dear.âÂ
âYes.â You exhale the sudden swell of nervous jitters. You hadnât expected your tagging along to be such a big deal. And you certainly hadnât expected Penelopeâs teacher to know your name. âGood things, I hope.âÂ
âOf course. Of course! Iâm so happy to finally put a face to the name. Iâm Mrs. Shepherd, but call me Helen, please.âÂ
âSorry, Iâm late. Car troubles,â Steve supplies.Â
She drops your hand to wave him off. âDonât you worry about that. Itâs this cold. Iâm telling ya it gets colder every year. But please! Come sit,â she urges. âRight over here.â Helen steers three toddler-sized chairs up to a similarly short table and takes the farthest seat for herself.Â
Penelope bends across Steveâs lap as he sits, watching you crouch down beside him. He drapes an arm across her back and pecks the side of her head. âGood day?â
Her head tilts in his direction as she nods.Â
âGood. You can go play if you want, babe.â
She doesnât answer with her words but she remains where she is, twisting and sprawling across Steveâs lap like heâs a human foam roller. Her attention averts to Helen whoâs opening a folder and spinning it across the table so both you and Steve can see.Â
You scan the page naturally but stop to wonder if Penelopeâs progress is really any of your business. Steve wouldnât mind, of course. He invited you to come inside. But suddenly attending his daughterâs parent-teacher conference feels a few steps further than friendship.Â
Helen points at a graph with the eraser end of her pencil and explains what each dot represents in terms of Penelopeâs learning milestones. You arenât exactly listening to her, not for lack of trying or a lack of Helenâs enthusiasmâ she has buckets of thatâ but because youâre stuck on the fact that Penelope talks about you enough in class for her teacher, whom youâve never met before, to recognize you the second you walk through her door.Â
Penelope taps your shoulder, very politely might you add, so as not to interrupt Mrs. Shepherd.Â
You raise your eyebrows.Â
She leans across Steve and cups her hand against the side of your head. âI have to show you something,â she whispers, warm breath funneling through her fingers straight into your ear.Â
And before you can decide if nowâs a good time, she crawls across your legs and drops onto the floor like a slinky. Her fingers slip around yours and she drags you up out of your seat ultimately deciding for you. Helen and Steve donât seem to mind, though, completely unphased by the antics of four-year-old children by now.
Penelope pulls you to the other side of the room where a Christmas tree stands about the same height as her. She points to the only ornamentâ a popsicle stick reindeer with a red pom-pom for a nose.Â
Excitement comes easy when sheâs so good at being cute. âRudolph! Did you make that?âÂ
She nods, pride trickling through a very wide grin. âItâs for Daddy. For our tree at home.âÂ
âOh my gosh, itâs gorgeous, Pen. Heâll love it so much, I bet.âÂ
âI get to take it home today since thereâs no school now.âÂ
âOh, for winter break?â
âMhmm.â Her eyes drift down to the floor, a large circle rug with every letter from A to Z. âThis is my spot,â she says, toe tapping the P. âP for Penelope. But I share with Phillip. Phillip starts with P even though it makes the F sound.âÂ
âYes, youâre right. Very good.âÂ
âWe do stories in the morning here. And snack in the afternoon but only sometimes if weâre extra good.âÂ
âOhh.âÂ
She toddles over to a wire shelf. âThis is where our crafts go. So they dry.â She picks a piece of paper off the wrack, wrinkled blue and green in watercolors. âI made this today.âÂ
âWow, that reminds me of the ocean.âÂ
ââCause it is the ocean.â Duh.Â
Your eyes flit to Steve, comically hunched over his knees in a chair much too tiny. He receives your smile from all the way across the room, a soft-set joy tugging each end of his lips. A joy that revels in your recognition. One that says Yes! Thatâs my kid being so cute!Â
âLook at this. My friend Michelle made it.â
You scan Michelleâs artwork and praise it. Michelleâs alright with watercolors but the pride you feel for Penelopeâs piece is unmatched.Â
âPenelope, come here a secâ.â She shoves the paintings back on the drying wrack and skips across the carpet to Steve. âMrs. Shepherd has something for you,â he continues.Â
Her teacher slides a gold-banded piece of cardstock across the table as you return. âYouâve done such a good job with your letter sounds this quarter that youâve earned a very special certificate.â
Penelope accepts and inspects the paper. âIt has my name on it.âÂ
âIt does. And it says âcertificate of achievement for mastering early literacy skillsâ.âÂ
Steve pokes her side. âYou hear that? Means you did a really good job!â
âI did?â Her eyes glow with excitement, snapping to yours over her shoulder. âLook, I got a cerfitacate.âÂ
You flash her an animated smile and two thumbs up.Â
âIâm very proud of you,â Steve says, a hand smoothing the frizz at the back of her head. âMy smart girl. Weâll get a treat to celebrate.âÂ
âIce cream?âÂ
He laughs, âSure.â Â
âYes!âÂ
Mrs. Shepherd flips her folder shut. âWell, Penelope, youâve worked very hard this month so enjoy your ice cream. Iâll see you after the break, okay?âÂ
âOkay.â
Steve stands and pushes in his chair. âThank you. Happy holidays Mrs. Shepherd.â
âMerry Christmas Steve.â Her waving hand flies to her heart as she smiles at you. âAnd what a blessing it was to meet you, honey. Please come by again at some point.âÂ
You smile back and grab the door as Steve collects Penelopeâs things.Â
She hurtles down the hall to the entrance, palms stamping another set of prints to the bottom half of the front door. âCan we get ice cream now?â she shouts. You arenât so far that she needs to yell but you suppose it doesnât matter when youâre the last ones to pick up a kid.Â
âNot right now, babe. We have to get something for my car.âÂ
She gasps. âDaddy, where is it?âÂ
âWhat?âÂ
âYour car.â
âItâs at work.âÂ
Her hands report to her hips as she spins. A mini Steve in so many more ways than one. âYou walked here?â
âNo, silly. Someone drove me.âÂ
Penelopeâs eyes follow Steveâs and a grin breaks at her realization. âYouâre coming with us?âÂ
âMhmm.âÂ
âYou didnât tell me!âÂ
âI thought you knew!â You reach over her ecstatic little face to push the door open. Her hand automatically curls around yours.Â
âWill you get ice cream with us?âÂ
âNell, probably not tonight,â Steve interrupts.Â
âI know! âM just saying when we go.âÂ
âYes, Iâll get ice cream with you.âÂ
Steve opens both car doors on the passenger side, slinging Penelopeâs things across the back row. âGo wait up front. Gotta put your seat in,â he tells her. âStomp your feet.âÂ
She stomps her boots against the asphalt and climbs through the footwell into your passenger seat. Her eyes sweep across the interior, noticing just how different your car is from Steveâs. Itâs not often she gets to ride in something other than the beamer. The last time over a year ago, Robin and her Suburu when she surprised them with a visit.Â
âCold?â you ask, dropping your keys in the ignition to reach for the temperature dial.Â
She nods ardently, nose and cheeks wind-kissed the same shade of pink.Â
You rub your hands together and crane over your shoulder, finding Steve with his cheek flush against the headrest, half his arm eaten by the seat cushion.Â
âNeed some help?â
He bites his lip and grumbles, âMaybe.âÂ
You meet him on the opposite side of the backseat, clueless as you can be about car seats, but ready to help nonetheless. The problem is Steve doesnât know your car and apparently neither do you. Thereâs no reason you should know if your car has hooks underneath the seats but it'd be really helpful if you did.Â
You whip out the car manual from the glovebox while Steve scans the instructions on the side of the car seat for alternatives. It takes a while. Long enough for Penelope to ask about dinner three separate times. But the necessary hooks are located eventuallyâ Steve swears he checked that sideâ and Penelopeâs seat is secured right behind Steveâs.Â
âAlright,â Steve huffs, checking his wristwatch, âOnly took us about twenty minutes.âÂ
âI did not expect installing a car seat to be such a workout,â you complain.
âYeah, they donât tell you about this part in middle school health class.âÂ
Penelope flops over the center console and moans, âAre we going?âÂ
âYes, come here please.âÂ
She sits up to cross her arms. âI donât want you to do the buckle.âÂ
Steve reminds himself that being hangry is hard, especially at her age. But his patience is easier to retain with you around, smiling all pretty and helping every chance you get. He takes a breath. âThen how do you ask?âÂ
She tilts her head so very innocently at you and puts on her best big girl voice. âWill you buckle me, please?âÂ
Even without the magic words youâd say yes. Who could resist all that Penelope charm? Long lashes and chubby cheeks and that dainty little voice. Certainly not you.Â
She gives you a detailed explanation about which clasps fasten where but itâs not too complicated to figure out yourself. One clips across her chest, two between her legs. Steve teaches you how to adjust the straps and confirms her chest piece is level with her armpits when you finish.Â
âCan we listen to Muppets?â
Your lips pinch into a small line. âI donât have any Muppets tapes. I have Christmas music?âÂ
Penelope shows you a very unhappy face. You are very aware Christmas is not her favorite holiday but what child does not like Jingle Bells? Youâre choosing to blame it on her empty stomach and a half hour spent bored in the school parking lot.Â
âOr you can look through my tapes? I donât really think youâll like them, though.âÂ
Steve passes her your box of mixtapes as you settle back in the front. Penelope picks one with Pat Benatar on it because itâs the first name she could sound out by herself. And itâs not The Muppets but she does listen to enough pop rock with Steve to know some of her songs.Â
You drive very carefully to Albertsonâs around the corner. You stop completely at stop signs, you ride the speed limit if not under, and you triple-check for pedestrians at the light. Youâve never driven cargo as precious as Penelope before.Â
Steve gets out alone because Penelope begs to stay with you and itâs easier to shop without a preschooler reaching for things she shouldnât have. While heâs gone, Penelope unpromptedly shares her opinions about your car. That thereâs less stuff on the floor and it smells much gooder than Steveâs. And how thereâs barbeque sauce stained on the ceiling of his car but not in yours. She asks if youâll pick her up from school again and you reply truthfully, that you arenât really sure.Â
Youâd like to pick her up again. Itâs a surprising type of comfort having company in the car. Someone to look at in the rearview, someone to ask about their day.Â
Steve returns with a grocery bag of cables and a second with candy. He chucks a bag of fun-sized peanut M&Ms in the back, smacking Penelope right in the cheek. But she canât complain, not with chocolate in her lap.Â
âDonât open it yet. Not in the car.âÂ
Penelope groans, sticking her toes into his seat until it moves. âWhy'd you even give it to me then?â
ââCause youâre fun-sized,â he grins. âAnd my peanut.âÂ
She doesnât know what he means, nor does she really care. All her focus is on counting the number of M&Ms beneath the paper wrapper.Â
âShe can have it now. I mean, if youâre fine with it,â you say.Â
âSheâs messy,â he warns.Â
You shrug. âSo am I. I donât mind.âÂ
He appreciates the gesture more than you know. Itâs a nice feeling, knowing heâs not the only one putting Penelopeâs needs before his own. Steve twists around in his chair and chuckles at Penelopeâs obvious eagerness. âGo ahead, babe.âÂ
She tears into the bag like a rabid dog, managing surprisingly well to keep the mess contained to her car seat. Steve pulls out his own bar of chocolate and tosses you the grocery bag. âTake your pick.âÂ
Heâs so thoughtful that it hurts. In the bag are all your favorite candies and two glass-bottled cokes. Steve prioritizes healthy eating, but heâs a sweets guy at heart. A little treat every once in a while won't hurt, he says.Â
You pick a candy and toss the bag back onto his lap.Â
Itâs an odd feeling driving to the center so late in the day, but even more odd to have Steve and Penelope beside you while you do it. Their conversations make for an entertaining ride, however; all giggles and spontaneous questions and the occasional argument about something silly like which candy is superior.Â
The car brakes squeal as you slow to a stop in front of the rec center. A chain link fence wraps around the building, a gate you never have to worry about blocking the entrance to the parking lot.Â
âShoot,â Steve sighs. âThe gate. I didnât even think about it.âÂ
You put the car in park as Steve unlocks the door. He steps out onto the sidewalk and marches up to the gate to see how legitimate this lock really is. The city provides a ludicrously low amount of funding to the center but the gate lock? Itâs as heavy-duty as it can be. Steve tries his office keys, which of course do not work, and then he stands there staring hopelessly at his BMW on the other side of the fence with his hands on his hips.Â
âIs Daddy having a bad day?â
âJust a long one.â You reach across his empty seat to roll the window down. âSteve.âÂ
He takes a few long strides back to the car and gets in. âIâm sorry. This is such a mess. You wouldnât know the custodian's number? I think I have it somewhere in my office.âÂ
âWhy would I know the custodianâs number?âÂ
âI donât know.â He scrubs his jaw, hand climbing up and back through his hair. Heâs frustrated about his car but he feels ten times worse that youâre stuck here with him.Â
You duck your head for a full view of the fence. It doesnât look very tall from where youâre sitting. âOkay, hear me out hereâŠâ
Steve raises his eyebrows.Â
âI hop the fenceââ
âNo.â
âItâs not that tall, Steve.â
âAbsolutely not. If anyoneâs jumping the fence, itâll be me.â His thumb and forefinger pinch either side of his forehead, though it doesnât do anything to ease the onset of his headache. âBut we canât even do that. Itâs too busy. Someoneâs gonna call the cops.âÂ
âThe po-po!â Penelope roars.Â
You laugh, turning in your seat to better see Penelope. Chocolateâs smeared across her chin and youâd bet a lot of money her hands are covered too. âWe can wait until nightfall,â you suggest, fishing the wad of napkins from your center console to pass to Penelope. âOoh, a stakeout!â
âItâs not a stakeout. We arenât watching someone.âÂ
âWe could send innocent little Penelope.âÂ
Steve drops his hand to glare at you. Not a real one, but not totally fake either. Heâs not mad at you for trying to lighten the mood, he just wishes it was working more. And he laughs at your jokes more than anyones, today heâs just feeling unreasonable about things out of his control.Â
âDaddy, yeah, Iâll go! Iâll be like a spy on a mission."
âA top secret mission,â you add.
âNo. Not happening. Forget itâ both of you.âÂ
You click your tongue. âLame.â
âYeah, Daddy, lame.â
He canât help but smile at that even though heâs trying very hard not to. âYouâre encouraging her, you know.âÂ
âSorry.âÂ
You arenât very sorry, he knows by the stupid smirk on your lips.Â
âOkay, why donât we just come back tomorrow for the party? Itâll be open then. Iâll take you home tonight and pick you up in the morning.â
âNo, noââÂ
âOh, come on, Steve. You're shooting down all my ideas. I don't like this whole tough guy I need to do everything by myself bullshit."
âBad word!â Â
Steve sighs. He knows you're right and he doesn't want to admit it.
âLet me help you,â you laugh, giving his shoulder a nice shove. âYouâre stubborn as a kid sometimes.â
âWell, which is it? A tough guy or a kid?âÂ
âDonât be a smartass.âÂ
âBad word! Again!â
He smiles then, mostly in disbelief at your sudden potty mouth. âDo we need to start a swear jar?âÂ
You pretend to zip your lips and put the car in gear.Â
The drive to Steveâs is on the long side but it doesnât feel that way at all. Not with Penelope in the backseat, sharing every detail of her day from what type of juice box Steve packed her for lunch to how Shannon from the three-year-old class got mulch in her boo-boo at recess. You love every second of it. You catch her animated gestures through the rearview and you ask all sorts of questions back.Â
Everything about this afternoon has differed from your usual routine, but Steveâs driveway feels more familiar than ever. You turn the car off out of habit but leave it off in favor of walking them inside. Steve frees Penelope from her car seat and collects her bag and the crumpled candy wrapper she left behind.Â
She races up the concrete hill, skidding on a sheet of ice, and landing butt-first with a giggle. You help her upâ even after she tries to yank you down with herâ and dust off the damp patch on her pants.
Steveâs only just shut the car door, looking up the driveway to see where you guys are.Â
âCome on slowpoke!âÂ
âYeah, Daddy, hurry! Itâs cold!â
âIâm cominâ. Iâm cominâ.âÂ
Steve sheds his sneakers at the door and Penelope copies him in a much less coordinated struggle. Your shoes remain on your feet because you donât intend to stay for very long, though Steve quickly reveals his other plans.Â
âStay for dinner?â he says as he offers his softest most convincing face. His backup plan is to call you just as stubborn and bully you into agreeing. âAs thanks,â he adds.Â
âYou donât have to thank me, Steve.â
âThen as friends?âÂ
Your face curdles into something unintentionally sour.Â
âMy cookingâs not that bad I promise,â he chuckles, kicking everyoneâs shoes out of the doorway.Â
âNo, itâs not that,â you swear with a small smile, bending to wedge your finger between your sock and your shoe.Â
âItâs Daddyâs turn to pick,â Penelope chimes in. She crouches to pet Cinderella whoâs prancing over with a shiny, new collar.Â
âIt is,â Steve sings like he just remembered. âHope you like stir fry.âÂ
âItâs really yummy,â Penelope adds. âIf you try new things sometimes you like them.âÂ
You hum. âVery wise.âÂ
They branch from your side like opposite ends of a wishboneâ Penelope skipping up the stairs and Steve pivoting for the kitchen. You follow Steve, and to your surprise, Cinderella follows you.Â
She dodges your attempt to scratch her chin, tail twitching like a snakeâs tongue, eyes narrowed into slits. Sheâs still grumpy with you. Because you catnapped her or because sheâs permanently bitter, you arenât totally sure.
âSheâs just begging for food. Acts like we starve her, the little drama queen,â Steve mutters. He pulls a bag of cat food from the kitchen sink cabinet. âFeed her for me?âÂ
You take the flimsy paper bag and unroll it. The shake of dry food like a bell, sending Cinderella scampering across the room to a pair of checkered bowls. You fill one and trade it for the other to fill with water from the sink. Steveâs hands are busy there, scrubbing an assortment of vegetables in the side without dishes.Â
âDo you think cats hold grudges?â you ponder out loud, thrusting the bowl underneath the faucet.Â
Amusement flickers across Steveâs face as he glances at Cinderella over his shoulder. âThis one? A hundred percent.âÂ
âI think she resents me for bringing her here.âÂ
He smiles at you with sealed lips. âSheâs not being tortured. Donât worry.âÂ
You place the bowl beside its twin, earning a less-than-pleasant sound from Cinderella.Â
âSheâll warm up to you,â he promises. You arenât sure you believe him but itâs a nice sentiment.Â
You return to his side, fingertips grazing the cutting board on the counter. âCan I help?â
âNo.â
You pull a sharp knife from its wooden block home and slide the slab of wet veggies away from Steve.Â
âNo. Youâre not helping.â He slings a dish towel over his shoulder and dries his hands with it. âGo. Get out.âÂ
âI am helping. Donât test me, Harrington, I have a knife.â
He scoffs. âThreatening me? In my own home?âÂ
âCause you're so stubborn.âÂ
âCause youâre so stubborn,â he mimics. âSays you.âÂ
âOh my God. Youâre actually a child.âÂ
He sets a large pan on the stove, only whispers of amusement in the corners of his mouth. âDonât cut yourself. We ran out of Barbie bandaids.âÂ
A clink and clatter against the tile steal your attention. Penelope in the archway, a baby doll cradled loosely in one arm, a second on the floor at her feet. Sheâs swapped her school clothes for a princess dress and a plastic pair of heels. âDaddy,â she groans. âYou said youâd get more.â
Steveâs eyes skip from the box of rice in his hands to her frowny face. âI know, babe. I forgot. Weâll go tomorrow.âÂ
She must not care all that much about the bandaids, clopping over to the stovetop for a peek.Â
âStoves hot,â Steve warns.Â
You watch Penelope closely, though Steveâs right beside her, twice her height and twice as vigilant. But sheâs well trained, hands clasped behind her back, eyes doing all the nosying. You donât have to worry as much as you do, but accidents can still happen.Â
âIs it almost ready?â she asks.Â
âNo. Go play for a bit. Iâll call you when itâs done.â
âBut Iâm hungry.â
âWhining wonât make it cook faster.â
âHow do you know?â
ââCause I did it all the time when I was your age. Never worked. Not even once.â
She hums like she isnât sure whether to believe him.Â
You catch her gaze, backing Steve up with an honest nod. âWanna help?â you ask.Â
âNo,â she decides candidly. You imagine Steveâs used to her straightforward nature, though itâs still quite funny to you. Â
âThen go play.â He steers her out of the kitchen, a hand gripping her head like a claw. Cinderella swats at his ankle when his foot barely misses her tail. âToo crowded in here.â Â
Penelope giggles as he gives her skull a good jostle. âDaddy.â
âPenelope.â
âWill it be ready in five minutes?â
âNo.â
âTen?â
âGoodbye. Take Cinderella.âÂ
Cinderella leaps away from Penelopeâs grabby hands, a brown blur as sheâs chased out of the kitchen, and by the click-clack of Penelopeâs shoes, presumably up the stairs.Â
âMy God, you are just massacring that carrot,â Steve hisses, peering over your shoulder.Â
âNo, this is how they do it.âÂ
âWho?â
âChefs. On those fancy shows. You should watch âem sometime. Could learn a thing or two.âÂ
âAre you kidding? These would send Julia Child to an early grave.âÂ
You snag the towel saddled on his shoulder and give him a fair smack on the arm. âJerk.âÂ
But he catches the free end before itâs gone, yanking until you list forward a step. There are mere inches between your chests, the length of your palm at most. And he fucking smirks. He smirks like an arrogant fool who knows this interaction is sending your heart into an endless somersault.Â
The air scrapes up your throat funny. It takes every ounce of control not to cough in his face. Your end of the towel drops as you turn away, retreating back to a more comfortable distance at the counter. âIâm surprised you even know anything about Julia Child,â you grumble.Â
âMy mom watched her show like all the time when I was a kid.âÂ
You hum, sweeping vegetable scraps in your hand to throw away. Not because theyâre massacred. âShe likes to cook? Your mom.â
âNo, not really,â he chuckles, though thereâs no amusement beyond the sound. âI think everyone just expected her to.âÂ
âOh,â you cringe. âSad.âÂ
He shrugs, taking the cutting board and dumping your handiwork into the simmering pan. A mushroom cloud of steam billows up as he turns his cheek. âBeing a housewife has its drawbacks.Â
âSounds like the life to me.â You sidle up to the stove to watch the veggies brown beside him. âIâd cook and clean all day if I didnât have to work.âÂ
âI donât think she wouldâve been happy either way. I dunno, I think itâs more about finding peace and happiness in what youâre doing. Not about what youâre doing.âÂ
You squint at the side of his nose with accusing eyes. âAre you quoting someone?âÂ
He squints right back at you, tone washed in fake offense. âWhat? No, I just thought of that.âÂ
âYou didnât get that out of a magazine or something?â
âNo.âÂ
You glance up at his hairline and smile. âWow, you really do have a brain up there.âÂ
He knocks his shoulder into yours, rough as he can be without doing any real damage. And even with two layers of wool between your skin, the touch sends a buzz from the tip of your fingers up the length of your arm. âSo mean," he says.
You might feel bad about it if he didnât tease you the same. Â
Steve stirs in a handful of seasonings and cooks the food until it bubbles. The pot comes off the stove to be set beside a stack of three plates on the counter.Â
âDinnerâs ready!â he shouts, and not a millisecond later thereâs the predictable thump, thump, thump, down the stairs. Penelope barrels into the kitchen with a long list of demandsâ more rice on her plate, a very big glass of juice, and most importantly, to sit beside you at the table. Steve lets the lack of manners slide because they're all doable requests and because he is also very eager to eat his dinner.
âThis is really good, Steve,â you compliment, across from him at the table, âThank you.âÂ
âFamily recipe.âÂ
âReally?â
âNo,â he smiles.Â
You tilt your head at Penelope. âWhy does your dad lie so much?âÂ
She shrugs with a mouth full of food.Â
âWas a joke,â he corrects. âNot a lie.âÂ
âMm. Still a lie.âÂ
âCan you stay for a sleepover?â Penelope butts in, her own train of thought far more important than yours and Steveâs debate. Her eyes are locked onto yours like theyâre matching targets. She knows already that you hate to say no to her pretty little face.Â
âWhat? Tonight?âÂ
She nods.
âAt your house?â
Her nose scrunches, an ear dropping to one shoulder. Sheâs still at an age where her facial expressions are inherently dramatic. Itâs nearly impossible to hide what sheâs feeling. âYeah,â she says, hopeful and curious and confident all at once.Â
A nervous chuckle slips. You look to Steve for help but heâs busy searching his plate for more onions. âI dunno, hun. Maybe not tonight.âÂ
âBut thereâs no school tomorrow.â
âYeah, but I⊠well, I didnât bring any clothes.â
âYou can borrow Daddyâs pajamas?â She looks you up and down, no discreet way about it. âI donât think mine will fit.â
Steve snorts. âNell, we gotta talk about it first,âÂ
âTomorrow night?âÂ
âWeâll talk about it. Have to eat all your dinner before I even think about it.âÂ
âAll of it?â
âEvery bite.â
Itâs not as much of a punishment as she makes it out to be. She really likes his stirfry.Â
âDid you take your spelling test today?â Steve asks.Â
A mushroom slews down Penelope's chin as she shakes her head.Â
âWhy not?âÂ
She swallows hard and her eyes roll to the side. âBecause Jamie and Jenna are sick. Um, and Mikey too.âÂ
âOh.âÂ
âWell, Mikey isnât sick but he didnât come to school.â
âOh. How come?âÂ
Her eyebrows pull together as she thinks. âUmm, he went somewhere. A wedding?âÂ
âOh, yeah. His mom got married, right? I think Courtneyâs mom told me that a while ago.âÂ
Penelope hums her agreement, her face turning through several emotions. âDo you think sheâs in love?â she eventually asks.Â
Steve peeks up from his food. âMikeyâs mom?â
âMhmm.âÂ
âWell, yeah, probably.âÂ
âWhy?â
âWhy what?âÂ
âWhy is she in love?âÂ
You smile hard, an echo of Steveâs across the table. The type of smile that canât be helped or hidden.Â
âWell, I dunno. Maybe she thinks heâs very kind. Or maybe heâs funny, or handsome,â he surmises.Â
âOr all of those?â
âSure,â he shrugs.Â
Penelope smiles then too, just as big and proud as yours as she declares, âWeâre in love.âÂ
âSorta,â Steve chuckles. âItâs a different kind of love.âÂ
âYou two are in love.âÂ
Steve has no food in his mouth to swallow, choking only on the air in his throat. And you, well, you arenât in any better shape to respond. Your chest is so tight you think your lungs mightâve shrunk, all that squeezes through you is a nervous laugh.Â
Steve clears his throat, âWe arenât in love, honey. Not like Mikeyâs mom.âÂ
âBut you spend a lot of time together? I think you might be,â she decides.Â
âWell, you know, you spend a lot of time with some people. Like your friends⊠and your teacher, but you arenât in love with all of them.âÂ
âWell, no, I guess.â
He takes her hand from across the table and gives it a squeeze. âThink about me and RoRo. We spend a lot of time together when she visits and I do love her but we arenât in love. Being in love is a special type of love.â
Penelope frowns, more confused than upset. âWait, so you arenât having a wedding too?â
Steve laughs, eyes flicking to yours as he pulls back. Heâs relieved to find youâre looking at Penelope, two shades warmer with enough affection to ease his nerves. âNo, silly. Whyâd you think that?âÂ
She shrugs, arms raising fervently. âI just thought thatâs what parents do when they get in love.â
âWell, yes, sometimes. But weâ weâre not in love.âÂ
She blinks several times, some at you, some at Steve, some at her half-eaten stirfry. You get the impression she doesnât fully believe him. And itâs terrifying as it is hilarious.Â
âOh. Well, I accidentally told Mrs. Shepherd you guys were going to have a wedding too.âÂ
âThatâs okay. What did she say?âÂ
âI think she was excited. I canât remember.âÂ
Steve nods, smile worsening with each tip to his head. Penelopeâs⊠mistake is cute and funny and embarrassing all at the same time. But heâs the farthest thing from mad about it when you're smiling as big as he is.Â
âAlright, alright,â he shakes his head. âEat your food. Itâs gettinâ cold.âÂ
Dinner concludes and Steve quickly takes off for the sink with an empty stack of plates. Heâs always on the go. Something to cook or clean or fix. Someone to teach manners and independence and emotional skills. It never seems to stop and yet he never complains.Â
You exit your chair, fully intending to fight Steve about drying the dishes when Penelope tugs on your sleeve.Â
âWill you stay for games?âÂ
âOhââ
Her hands clap together. âPretty please! With sprinkles and sugar cones and chocolate sauce and a mara-sheeny-cherry on top!â
Your laugh catches you so off guard it turns into a cough. âA mara-what now?â
âMara-she-ee,â she tries.
âMaraschino.âÂ
âYeah, mara-she-oh.âÂ
Your giggles spill in sync. You fix her puffy princess sleeve where itâs slipped down her shoulder and explain, âIf your dad says itâs okay, then Iâll stay for games.âÂ
Her eyes jump across the room to Steve whoâs already yelling over the running sink water, âItâs okay!âÂ
Penelope takes your hand in her much littler one and escorts you to the living room. Steveâs house is minimally decorated for the holidays, but he has a real pine tree and two stockings on the mantel. Penelope plops in front of the entertainment center to flick through her options, pulling out a board game called Mr. Mouth.Â
âI love this game,â she says, dumping the contents of the box across the hardwood. The game pieces roll every which way but you wrangle up the ones headed under the couch. âI always win,â she adds, raking her own handful of coins in a pile.Â
Her confidence is charming. Youâd challenge her if she wasnât so cute about it. âIâve never played. Can you show me?âÂ
âUmm, yeah. You need to get all the flies in froggyâs mouth. But we got to build it first.âÂ
Penelope seems to have played enough to know which pieces go where. They slot together easily, a frog base at the center with four arms for launching. And each arm has a corresponding chip color, each chip scalloped with the shape of a fly.Â
âI want red!â Penelope claims quickly, picking several red coins off the floor.Â
You balance a stack of yellows on the end of your catapult. âSo we put âem here and launch them?âÂ
She cocks her head at you, baby teeth perched on her bottom lip as she smiles. âYes, howâd you know?âÂ
âJust a feeling.âÂ
You collect all your coins and count backward from three. Penelopeâs hand smacks her lever on your go, sending red flies springing every which way. You join in, smacking and smacking until there are no flies left to launch. The frog contains an overwhelming amount of red to yellow, so much so that a count is not needed to declare the winner.Â
Penelope beams at Steve as he plods over. âDaddy, I won!âÂ
âYou did? Oh, Mr. Mouth. Sheâs like ridiculously good at this game,â he tells you. âWhat color can I be?â
âYou can be blue or green. I think you can be blue âcause itâs your favorite.â
âOkay, Iâll be blue.âÂ
Penelope slides the blue chips across the floor where Steve sits crisscrossed beside you. He rolls his shoulders and cracks his fingers, an ostentatious display of confidence as he smirks.Â
âReady to give up your crown, princess?âÂ
"Mmm-mm."
"Well, get ready. 'Cause today's the day."
âNo, it isn't. Not even in ten-million-trillion-ga-zillion years!â
"It sure is!"
âNo, you never win! Not even when youâre sleeping!â Penelope shouts.Â
Your laughter is lost to their immediate bickering. Empty insults like a ping-pong ball back and forth across the gameboard. But the real chaos unfolds the second you finish the starting countdown.
For an athletic guy, youâd think Steve would care about good sportsmanship. But not today, apparently. Sabotage is his core strategyâ stealing and stuffing Penâs chips down his shirt, shoving her defenseless little arms away as she screams.Â
Itâs all in good fun, though. Penelope is so loved she doesnât consider him truly mean for even a second. But she begs you to convince Steve to play fair for at least a few rounds. And he does, of course, because you asked so nicely and because he wants more than anything in the world for Penelope to have a good time. She wins three rounds in a row because Steve lets her and so do you.Â
âYeah, yeah. Youâre the champion,â Steve rolls his eyes. âDonât rub it in.âÂ
âDaddy, donât be a sore loser.â
âThen donât be a sore winner.âÂ
She sticks her tongue out and he returns the favor twice as fierce. Their rivalry resurfaces in a handsy argument about who the real winner is. Penelope winds up licking his cheek which gets her in very serious trouble with the tickle monster.Â
She cries your name as Steve hoists her up in the air, the last syllable stolen by a gasp. âPleaseââ she cackles, âHelp me-ee!âÂ
Steve pins her back down to his chest like a seatbelt, fingers curling into her sides until she screams again and again. âWhoâs the champion?â he repeats with a full-blown smile, barely preserving his evil persona.
âMe!âÂ
âErrr!â He mimics a buzzer sound, sending Penelope into another wild fit of giggles.Â
You're so weak with your own laughter, that you aren't sure you could help her if you tried.Â
She kicks and flails and wiggles under his ruthless hands until her very last drop of energy. âI give up,â she admits, breathless, dropping to a dead weight in his arms. âYouâre the champy-un."Â
Steve rolls her mercifully onto the floor where she regains enough strength to flee behind your back, arms looping around your neck like youâre nothing but a human shield.Â
You press a smidgen of your weight into her tummy and pat her arm, eyes glued fondly to Steveâs. âItâs okay, Pen. Youâre my champion, still.âÂ
Steve wants to roll his eyes at you but he canât. Your affinity for loving his daughter never falters. You know all the right things to say, all the best ways to pretend. Itâs so deeply unbearable all he can do is smile. And when you smile back, he gets a taste of something he always dreamed of, and he realizes he has all he ever wanted in the world.Â
Steve relishes another mindful second of all this make-believe and non-make-believe excitement before sighing. âOkay, princess, itâs late. Go get pjs on. Want Muppets?âÂ
She pushes up on her toes until you lean forward, her breath warming your neck as she pleads, âI wanna play Bed Bugs.â
Steve scrunches his nose. âBut that game makes me so itchy.â
âBut I wanna show Y/N!âÂ
âAnother night, babe. Itâs really late. If you wanna movie we have to now.â
She sighs. She loves her night-time movies more than most things, even if she rarely makes it to the end. âBath?âÂ
Steve squints. âWhy? You stink?âÂ
You feel the shape of her smile through the fabric on your shoulder blade. âNo.â
âDo I need to check?âÂ
âNooo.âÂ
You squint at Steve, humming until you run out of breath. âWhatâs thatâ Steve, do you smell that?â You sniff the air loudly, nostrils flaring, nose scrunching.Â
Steve imitates your dramatic sniffing, inching his face closer and closer to your face. âI think⊠maybe itâs behind you.â
You whip your head to the side, gasping like Penelope hadnât been there the whole time. She lets her wrist be dragged up to your nose, where you skip across soft skin in a dotted line up her arm. âFalse alarm,â you decide after one final whiff. âNo stink bugs here.âÂ
âAlright,â Steve grins. âBath tomorrow then. Thereâs clean jammies in the laundry room.âÂ
Penelope launches herself off of you, stamping off into the other room.Â
âDonât mess up my pile!â Steve yells.Â
ââKay!âÂ
He scoots back into the recliner's closed footrest, arms stretching up with a big breathy groan. A rogue coin from Mr. Mouth pokes the underside of his thigh, and before he even gets his hands on it, you can tell heâs itching to flick it at you. Call it friendsâ intuition.Â
It hurls right past your open palm, catching in the neckline of your long sleeve. Heâs not smiling but he doesnât need to for you to read the satisfaction on his face.Â
You huck it back because it brings you the same pleasure. But he doesnât try to catch it, arms too sore and mind too static for quick reflexes. The toy smacks the center of his chest, sliding down into a crease in his sweater. Â
âTired?â
âYeah,â he admits, setting his aching eyelids to rest. âThink you could be me for the rest of the night?âÂ
You know heâs only kidding but you wouldnât mind taking over if he wasnât. Penelopeâs mostly self-sufficient at her age. You feel capable enough by now to babysit without any disasters occurring.Â
âWe could swap clothes. I donât think sheâd notice.âÂ
He huffs through his nose, a gentle smile splaying across his lips. âWould you actually do me a favor?â
ââCourse.âÂ
âJust turn on the VHS. Movieâs already in.âÂ
You retrieve the remote from the coffee table and power on the VHS. The TV flickers awake to a paused scene from The Muppet Christmas Carol involving several muppets, one recognizably Kermit the Frog. You sweep Mr. Mouth back into its box while the tape rewinds, kneeled in front of Steve whoâs slouching lower and lower into the leather footrest.Â
You tentatively reach for the last coin tucked in his sweater, stuttering when his hand shoots out to bracelet your wrist. His lips flare into a smile, eyelids peeling open to watch you squirm.Â
âDonât do thatââ you murmur, swatting his chest with the hand not trapped in his. âScared me.âÂ
âYou make it too easy,â he mumbles back, thumb stroking the soft flesh of your arm. He looks up at you with a quiet reverence, eyes rich as soil, so grounding and full of life.Â
Itâs all but two seconds, two blinks, two breaths; you pretend not to savor the heat of his gaze, not to feel the way your heart chokes beneath his fingertip. You pretend not to imagine the curve of your lips against every freckle on his face. Itâs all so easy, this pretending. Itâs a million times easier to pretend than to admit youâre caught in something youâre not at all ready to lose.Â
Steve unshackles your wrist at the growing echo of footsteps. You lean back onto your heels as Penelope rockets through the room, a long nightgown billowing behind her like a sail in a windstorm. She tackles Steve with swinging arms and heavy feet, rocking the recliner under both of their weight.Â
âOw, babe. That hurt.â Steve complains, a hand darting up to his chin. âYou headbutted me.âÂ
Penelope cranes back to see for herself, one hand on either side of his achy jaw. From where youâre sitting, thereâs no cause for immediate panic, only a little red spot on Steve and a guilty little girl in his lap.Â
âNo bandaids,â she reminds him like it's really rather unfortunate.Â
âI donât need one. Just a kiss.â
She nods and puckers her lips, slotting them in the dip beneath his.Â
âAll better,â Steve assures as she pulls away. He smiles big to prove it.Â
But her inspection is far from over. Sympathetic fingers caress every bend and bow of his face. She sets a second kiss to a razor bump on his cheek and a third to the scar on his forehead. They sink down to a flat heap on the floor, matching double chins and four cheeks dimpling with joy.Â
Penelope is satisfied enough to roll over on his chest as the tape finishes its rewind. Steve tugs a blanket from the recliner to shake across their bodies, an arm looped around Penelope like a belt, his chin tucked against her crown.Â
And with a heated human pillow to curl up on, itâs a miracle Penelope makes it through the intro credits. Sheâs dozing not long later, however, one hand discarded across the floor, the other curled around Steveâs on her chest.Â
He lifts her with the effortlessness of an experienced parent, retiring her to everyoneâs favorite corner of the sectional. Her rousing is mitigated with a few strokes down her nose and a forehead kiss to round it off.Â
Steve presses a shushing finger to his mouth and tugs you off the floor. He holds your hand as you tip-toe away, turning you sixteen again, long before you even knew Steve Harrington existed.Â
He leaves you at the dining table, swishing away and momentarily returning with a wine glass in each hand.Â
âWine?â you chuckle, pinching the neck of the glass he offers.Â
âApple juice,â he smirks. âUnless you wantâ I might still have an old bottle of champagne from like a raffle or something.âÂ
âNo, no. Juice is great.â You swivel the cup until gold sloshes up the sides. âWhatâs the occasion?âÂ
He sits in the chair Penelope had earlier, slinging an arm around the back and propping his feet up on the bar underneath yours. âDoes there need to be one?â
âI think so.âÂ
He hums. âLetâs say⊠to not rescheduling the parent-teacher conference a third time.âÂ
âTo that. Sure,â you muse, tipping your glass to meet his with a satisfactory clink.Â
You each take a sip donning matching smiles. Thereâs a glow about him, a tired kind of warmth in his mussed hair and slackened shoulders. Itâs a simple thing, sitting here together in this pocket of quiet. But you feel more present than ever, like the world has narrowed just to fit the two of you.Â
And maybe itâs the dreamy stillness of this moment. Or maybe the placebo effect works with courage and your pretend glass of wine. But thereâs a craving you canât ignoreâ a deep desire to stitch together the fragments of Steve and Penelopeâs lives youâve yet to understand.Â
âCan I ask you something? Like personal?â you begin.Â
âHmm?â
âPenelopeâs mom⊠is sheâ well, you donât talk about her. And Iâm just curious if⊠I dunno. Iâm just curious, I guess.â
Steve blinks down at the grooves on the floor. He finds they arenât all that interesting and they donât spark any easy answers. Youâre right in the fact that he doesnât talk about her. Heâs not sure how to, mostly.Â
âI shouldnât haveââ
His fingers skip across the exposed skin of your wrist. A sweet attempt to palliate some embarrassment. âNo, youâre okay⊠Sorry, itâs not like a secretâ"
âNo, I know, I justâ am I crossing a line by asking? I donât want toââ
âNo, no. Itâs okay. Sheâsâ itâs okay. Her momâ Annieâs her name. SheâsâŠâ The long stream of air blown through his lips catches in a nervous chuckle. âWhere do I even begin?âÂ
âDid she⊠die?â You hate to say it, to even think it, but itâs the most logical explanation in your mind.Â
ïżœïżœïżœNo, God no. Not that I know of, anyway.â The apple of his throat bobs as he swallows. âSheâs just, I dunno, I think she lives in Texas now. Not really sure what sheâs doing, to be honest with you.âÂ
âYou donât talk?â
âNo, not sinceâ not in a long time. Penelope was a baby last time I saw her. What? Like eight, nine months or something.âÂ
âShe didnât want to help?âÂ
âShe tried, Iâll give her that much, but not for very long, no. She was really unhappy, I guess. How she could look at Penelope and feel that way,â he exhales through his nostrils, âWell, Iâll never really understand that.âÂ
You hum because you arenât really sure what to say. You arenât really sure there is anything to sayâ not anything he hasnât already heard or thought himself. âI think some people just aren't meant to be mothers,â you decide.Â
âShe certainly thought so.âÂ
Your mouth twists into a frown, a patchwork of sympathy, pity, and the uneasy fear of saying the wrong thing. Yet, curiosity, or even selfish desire, blooms brighter than any other emotion. âDo you still love her?â
He shakes his head definitively. âIâm not sure I ever did. We were only together a few months when she found out she was pregnant.â
ââM Sorry, Steve.â
He waves you off before you can even finish your pity. âDonât. Donât get me wrong, raising a kid alone is the hardest thing Iâve ever done by far. But it taught me a lot about myself. About my friends, my family. I wouldnât be who I am without Penelope.âÂ
âIs that why you moved here? From Indiana?â
âSorta, I guess. I wanted a fresh start after she left. But I think in some fucked up way I was also pushing everyone away so I wouldnât be hurt again. And so I could prove to everyoneâ Annie, my parentsâ that I could do it without their help.âÂ
âYour parents? I know you arenât close but⊠they didnât help?â
âMy parents? Probably the least helpful people I couldâve asked. Theyâreâ I mean, they barely raised me. Old manâs a real asshole. We never really got along. And Mom, well, sheâs just⊠I donât even know. I donât think her life turned out how she thought it would and she resents everyone around her for that.âÂ
âMm.âÂ
âI like to think they tried their best, maybe they did, but I sure as hell know itâs not nearly as hard as I expected it to be to just show up for your kid. You know, Penelope, sheâs my everything, seriously. I donât know what Iâd be doing without her. Something stupid, probably.âÂ
âLike what?â
âI dunno, probably taking over Dadâs dealership like he wanted me to. God, Iâd be miserable. Iâd be just like them.â He shakes his head, relief more than anything.
âGood thing you moved here and met me.âÂ
âYeah. Good thing.â He laughs, a real Steve laugh, no self-deprecation involved. When it fizzles out into a smile, he hesitates to ask, âWould you ever come with me, if I moved back home?âÂ
For a moment you donât quite understand what he means. Even after the moment passes, you still arenât totally sure. To visit him is your first inclination. To help him move, your second. But he asks with such seriousness you canât help but assume heâs asking you to move with him.Â
âWhat?â You try to soften your surprise, stuffing every inch of smile back into a very neutral, normal set of lips. âAnd be miserable with you at your dadâs dealership?â you joke, a frazzled attempt to play off your nerves.Â
âNo,â he says incredulously. Thereâs a soft warmth to his cheeks, a lightness to his voice. âNo, you know what I mean.âÂ
Your mouth opens and closes, your hands growing hotter the more you wring them in your lap. You really havenât got a clue how serious heâs being. You're thrilled at the prospects of that possibility coming true, but tense with anticipation for how the rest of this conversation will play out. But reality takes the reigns and you're hit with a heavy realization.Â
âDo you want to go back?â Your heart sinks down to your stomach hearing the words off your tongue.Â
He looks away, a guilty sigh. âI think about it sometimes. Iâd have more support there. Robin, Nance and Jon. All the kids, their parents.â His discomfort dissipates with a rough scrub to his cheek. âSorry, I shouldnâtâ Iâm not asking you to. It wasâ was just an idea I had. Stupid.âÂ
âNo, no. Iâm not saying I wouldnâtâ um sorry, I donâtâ I donât know what Iâm saying.âÂ
He laughs, your stammering a comfort. âIâm being silly.âÂ
âYouâre not,â you promise.Â
His gaze traces the framed photo hung beside you on the wall. Itâs one youâve seen several times, a lovely piece of their life to look at. Somewhere outside, Penelope situated on his lap. She couldnât have been more than two, with more rolls and fuller cheeks.Â
âYou know something?â Steve mumbles, voice breathy, trailing off in a wisp.Â
âHmm?âÂ
âI really wanted Penelope to be Elizabeth. Lizzie for short.â
Your lips twitch into an easy grin, focus rotating between him and the photo. âReally?â
âMhmm.â
âI like that. Itâs pretty.âÂ
âYeah. I think so. Annie, not so much. She insisted on Penelope, after her great-grandma.â He shakes his head. Steve never even met her mother, let alone her great-grandmother. âI love it now obviously, Iâd never change it, but it took a while to grow on me.â
âElizabeth,â you chuckle, stuck in a one-sided staring contest with your favorite set of button eyes. They were just as cute then, but sheâs really grown into them now. All her features have leveled out, her jaw more square, like Steveâs, her eyebrows darker and more defined. âI canât picture it. Sheâs Penelope.âÂ
âYeah, sheâs Penelope alright.â His eyes flick to you, to watch you watch his daughter with a love so unique. âMaybe if I ever have another Iâll use Lizzie.âÂ
His words are like an electric shock. The idea of Steve with a second kidâ a baby. Not a four-year-old whoâs more of a tiny person than a baby. But a real baby with baby hair, baby clothes, and soft baby skin. Penelopeâs newborn photos are enough to get you squealing with cuteness overload. You donât know if youâd survive the real deal.Â
âYou want another?â You try not to sound surprised as you ask.Â
âI dunno. I always pictured myself with more. But, I donât think I could handle it. Nellâs a handful as it is.âÂ
âTheyâd keep each other busy,â you reason. âThey say twoâs easier than one.âÂ
âI donât know about that.â He braces his elbow on the back of his chair, cheek pillowed in his palm as he looks at you. âBut I do think about it. God, imagine Penelope with a baby sibling.â You swear his eyes shimmer as he says it.Â
âSheâd be such a good big sister.â
âShe would,â he agrees. His heart thrums at the idea, faster the more his brain builds on it. âI dunno. Maybe if the right person comes along I would do it.âÂ
Under your chair, you nudge his calf with the side of your foot. âYouâre a really good dad, you know. Youâd manage.âÂ
He nods, not like he agrees but rather in recognition that your words are very kind. âThanks.âÂ
âI mean it.â
âI know you do,â he smiles so fondly at you your stomach flips. âOkay. Can I ask you something kinda personal now?â
âOh jeez,â you grimace. âDepends.â
âCome on, I just answered like, ten million questions about my life.â
You really canât argue with him there. âFine. Shoot.âÂ
âI just wanna know,â he smushes his lips together, gaze tapering off to one side of you like heâs thinking very hard about how to phrase this. âWhy the fuck were all of my missing pens in the backseat of your car?âÂ
Realization strikes like the sharp rush of hitting your funny bone. Your jaw drops, straining with the ache of a repressed smile, and your tongue fights to find the least incriminating words possible. âWhatâ I didnât evenâ itâs not what it looks like, Steve, I swear.âÂ
âOh, I think itâs exactly what it looks like, you little thief.â He digs into the front pocket of his jeans, pulling out a cheap ballpoint pen, and slamming it on the table.Â
âThat could be anyone's!â you defend. Youâre both itching to laugh. You can see it on his face as much as he can yours.Â
Steve fishes out a second pen, then a third, and a fourth. He takes the fifth, a pink one with feathers shooting out the cap, and points the nib at your chest. âYou know, this is my favorite pen! Penelope bought this for me at the book fair!âÂ
âI was going to give it back! I swear!âÂ
He pulls another three from his pocket and youâre done for. Laughing, almost wheezing in a hysterical breathlessness. You didnât realize youâd stolen so many. Youâve been doing it slowly for months.Â
âYouâre sick for this. Only a psycho would do something like this.âÂ
You can barely keep your eyes open long enough to look at him. But you find a smile when you do, albeit blurry through unshed tears. âSteve.âÂ
He grabs a Sharpie from the pile and uncaps it, stealing your arm for his non-dominant hand to hold. Your sleeve is bunched up at your elbow, your wrist turned for optimal lighting.Â
âSteve!â you gasp when the cold felt tip of the marker presses into your wrist.Â
With a thumb pinning your pulse point, he scrawls PEN STEALER in big letters across your forearm. You hope on all things good in the world that he canât feel how fast your blood is pumping through your skin.Â
âThatâs not gonna wash off!â
âYeah, exactly,â he chuckles. âSo everyone knows you steal pens!âÂ
âBut I only steal your pens.âÂ
He scoffs. âI can't believe you. Here you had me thinking it was that old fart Lenny this whole time. Such a liar.âÂ
Something about Steve saying âold fartâ sends you completely over the edge. You havenât had any real wine, but you feel almost tipsy, like everything is ten times funnier than usual. His hand staples your hip to the chair to keep you from sliding off as you double over. Your stomach cramps like itâs being twisted inside out.Â
âIâm gonna write it on your forehead next,â he beams.
âNo,â you gasp, weakly shoving his wrist away from your face.Â
Steveâs strong, but heâs far from rough. His free hand settles on the back of your head, thumb and index finger clamping either side of your ear to keep you still. And youâre anything but. Your shoulders wrack with every cackle, and your head shakes with every nefarious warning. The Sharpie quivers its way closer and closer to your skin like a murder knife.
But just before the tip scrapes your browbone, your elbow stabs Steveâs tricep, hard enough to free the marker from his hand. Itâs flung across the dining table, spinning off the edge with a final click against the floor. Itâs uncapped, and very likely just permanently stained some part of his house black, but Steve couldnât care less.Â
All he can manage to care about in this moment is the way your eyes light up in victory. How your smile lines deepen and your breath shakes out to fan his face in short waves. How the weight of your head in his palm is a feeling that transcends almost all types of comfort heâs experienced before.Â
âWhat now, Harrington?â you goad.
He shakes his head, smiling harder than youâve ever seen him smile. Heâs so close you can see the molars in the very back of his mouth. His eyes trickle down to your lips for a second so long you canât help but hold your breath.Â
âDaddy?â
Steveâs hands snap back to a more friendly place in his lap. âHey, sweetheart. Hey. Whatâs the matter?âÂ
Penelope hustles to his chair, whimpers cut short every step.Â
He tugs her up into his lap, tucking in her limbs one at a time. His palm, large but no less gentle, presses frizzy stalks of dark hair flat to her skull. âWhatâs wrong, baby?âÂ
âI didnât know where you went,â she mewls. Her back trembles under his other hand, climbing up under her shirt and falling in long passes down her spine.Â
ââM sorry. We didnât want to wake you, thatâs why we came in here.â He pecks the closest point of her head. âScared you, huh?âÂ
His attention on her doesnât waver. Whatever version of himself he was with you vanished the instant he laid eyes on poor Penelopeâs face. Dad Steve comes before any other Steve, Penelope before any other person.Â
âTime is it?â she murmurs into his neck.Â
âLate. Like way past your bedtime.âÂ
Penelope remembers youâre still there, turning in Steveâs arms to double-check. Her ruddy cheeks glisten under the dining room light, a heartbreaking frown to match. âAre you doing a sleepover?â she asks. Â
You smile, though maybe you shouldnât. Sheâs still frowning, but more upset that she might not have been invited to a sleepover thatâs not even happening.Â
âNo, babe. Iâll be leaving soon. Itâs past my bedtime too.âÂ
You think she replies but itâs more sound than coherent word.Â
âCome on. Back to bed. Your real bed this time.â Steve lifts her sideways like Sleeping Beauty as he stands. âSay goodnight.âÂ
âI want your bed,â she says instead, slow blinking at Steveâs sweater.Â
âBut your stuffies will be so lonely,â he reasons.Â
âIâll bring them.â
âAll of them?â
âMhmm.âÂ
From the angle youâre sitting, you canât see most of Penelopeâs face, but judging by the look Steve sends you, you imagine itâs pretty damn cute.Â
âBe right back,â he assures, adjusting his grip under her knees before he starts for her bedroom.Â
Your gaze drops to the wooden spindles of the chair Steve occupied just a moment ago. He was going to kiss youâ youâre almost certain of it. The weight of his hand clings to the back of your neck, a phantom touch. And the heaviness to his eyes, replete with intent, only a flash in your mind. Why else stare at someoneâs lips for so long?Â
You swipe the nearest wine glass and bare your teeth at your reflection. No food is caught between them, no crumbs on your face. You set the glass down. Steve was going to kiss you. Right?Â
âMaybe, Penelopeâs right?âÂ
You flinch at the suddenness of his voice, twisting around to find Steve back in the archway.Â
He ambles up to the table, fingers wrapping around the back of your chair. âAbout a sleepover. All that wine, you know? Probably safer if you stayed the night.âÂ
You huff, not so much a laugh as a breath of air. Thereâs a blurry line somewhere between joking and flirting and youâre certain youâve both crossed it tonight.Â
âI can handle my pretend alcohol, Steve. Donât you worry.âÂ
He sighs, a very theatric upswing to his voice. âIf you say so.âÂ
You roll your eyes and stand. Steve collects the wine glasses to set in the sink and follows you to the front door silently.Â
âThanks for the food. And the wine,â you croon, stuffing into your shoes one at a time.Â
âThanks for driving us,â he replies as you look back up.Â
You nod, eyes affixed to his. Not knowing what to say. Not wanting to leave.Â
âDonât forget to pick us up tomorrow.âÂ
âI have a better chance of winning the ugly sweater thing if I ditch you.â
âAnd break poor Penelopeâs heart?âÂ
âIâll sneak her out.âÂ
His chest shakes through a soundless laugh. âOh, sheâd love that.â
You tap his sweater with the tip of your car key. âIâll pick you up at noonâ if youâre lucky.â
Thereâs evidence of a long day in the dark crescents under his eyes, and still, he pulls the door open for you and says, âCall me when youâre home. Drive safe.âÂ
Love, admiration, attachment, whatever it is, it rolls through you like a pinball, shooting from one end of your ribcage to the other. To be cared for on such a level is a weightless kind of overwhelming. A good kind, if there is one.Â
âDonât wait up,â you reply.Â
But you know he will regardless of whatever else you say. Heâll call you first, wake Penelope, and drive over to your place if he has to.Â
So at home, you dial Steveâs number before you even take off your shoes. And he picks up before the end of the first ring.Â
âCan I tell you something?â you ask as soon as the call connects.Â
âHmm?âÂ
He sounds half-asleep. You consider wishing him good night then, but you didnât plan to say much to begin with. And you might never tell him if not now.Â
âI just⊠I donât think Iâve laughed that hard in⊠maybe ever.âÂ
He smiles, you recognize the sound through the crackle of several miles. âYeah,â he breathes, âMe neither.âÂ
Thereâs a beat. A soft inhale, exhale that shouldnât sound as lovely as it does. âThatâs all I wanted to tell you.âÂ
âSee you tomorrow, pen stealer.â
âGoodnight.âÂ
âNight.âÂ
The line clicks and youâre left to the stark silence of your home. Joy ripens into something richer, something fuller. You feel whole, like you hadnât realized something was missing in the first place.Â

this catboy has me in a chokehold rn
Inhale. Hold. Exhale.
Inhale. Hold. Exhale.
You tried to steady your breathing, fighting against the panic rising in your chest. You could feel tears gathering in the corners of your eyes, and you furiously blinked them away.
Inhale. Hold. Exhale.
Inhale. Hold. Exhale.
You needed to stay calm if you were going to resolve this situation.
It had started with a harmless mistake. You hadnât given it a second thought when youâd left your front door open while retrieving a package. Youâd stepped outside for mere seconds, and your cat had always been so well-behaved that it never even occurred to you that she would try to run away.Â
Now here you were, pacing frantically up and down the sidewalks of Lumina Square, futilely reassuring yourself that your precious furry baby was okay and that youâd find her safe and sound. You spared a glance at the sprawling maze of roads and crosswalks zig-zagging through the city center, feeling the rush of air against your skin as cars zipped past endlessly, and the tears threatened to spill over your cheeks again as you imagined the worst-case scenario.Â
You were sure you looked like a lunatic to passersby, wandering about aimlessly and calling out your catâs name in a frenzied tone. With each passing minute, you could feel your hope slipping further and further away.
You rounded a corner, slumped over and defeated from your effortless search, when you spotted a Public Security officer. He was a feline Thiren, with a long, fluffy tail and ears poking out of his mop of white hair.Â
As you moved closer, you realized the officer was holding something in his arms. Something fluffy with a long tail and pointed ears not unlike his own. Your heart started beating wildly in your chest as you felt your optimism return, and you couldnât help yourself as you started almost running towards the PubSec officer. You recognized those furry features as belonging to your beloved cat.
The officerâs ears twitched as you ran up to him and he turned to face you as you approached, giving a clear view of your cat peacefully snuggled up in his arms like a baby. It seems he quickly put two and two together, and gave you an eager grin.
âHello! Is this your cat, then?â
You could have thrown yourself at this manâs feet, you were so grateful to him. You tried to steady your breathing, giving him an appreciative look.
âYes, sir, thank you so much! I- I have no idea why she ran away. I swear she isnât usually like this!â
The officer just chuckled, his bright smile only widening further.Â
âDonât worry about it! I'm just glad this sweet little gal has such a lovely owner. I was worried she might be a stray.â
You felt your face heating up at his words. If it was anyone else, you might have felt uncomfortable with a stranger saying something that could be so easily interpreted as flirting, but he seemed so genuine and wholesome, you couldnât even bring yourself to feel upset.Â
You held out your arms to take your cat back, and the officer stepped closer to hand her off. Your cat, however, seemed to have different ideas.Â
Instead of being happy to see you, your cat cuddled closer up against the Thiren, purring contentedly. You huffed before giving the officer an apologetic smile, reaching to try to grab your cat from him again. As you gently lifted her, your cat squirmed in your grasp, digging her claws into the officerâs uniform and refusing to let go.
That little traitor!
The officer laughed at the predicament, giving your cat a scratch behind the ear. Meanwhile, the heated flush of embarrassment creeped further up the back of your neck.Â
âI'm so sorry about this. Iâm sure you have much more important things you could be doing right now, and Iâm wasting your time-â
The officer cut you off with a vigorous shake of his head, his ears flopping cutely with the motion.Â
âNot at all! As a Public Security officer, it is my duty to help the citizens of New Eridu, no matter what! Making sure you get your cat back is as important as anything else, and Iâd be willing to wait here all day if thatâs what it took!â
You were taken aback by how sincere this guy was, and you felt your heart flutter at his kind words.Â
Woah, slow down now.
This guy was clearly passionate about his job, and he probably would have said the same thing to anyone else, you told yourself.Â
âThank you, sir. Thatâs very nice of you to say.â
He gave you a beaming grin in response, and you wondered if his cheeks hurt from smiling so much.Â
It took several more minutes of coaxing and embarrassed apologies from you before your cat finally relented to being handed over. You tucked her close to you in a firm but gentle hold so she couldnât run away again (or jump back into the officerâs arms again, traitor).
You sounded like a broken record, but you thanked and apologized to the officer once more.Â
âThank you again so much for finding my cat. Iâm sorry for any trouble this caused.â
âItâs no problem at all! Iâm glad I could help! And I guess I should apologize as well. Cats just really seem to like me for some reason, so Iâm sure thatâs why your little gal was being a bit fussy.â
You almost laughed out loud at his words. It didnât seem to occur to him that being a Cat-Thiren might have something to do with his cat magnetism, but you found his obliviousness to be adorably endearing.
âYou donât have to apologize. That certainly doesnât sound like the worst problem to have.â
He rubbed the back of his neck, giving you a bashful grin.Â
âYeah, I guess not!â
His tail was swishing back and forth excitedly, and you found yourself almost hypnotized by it. Was it soft, you wondered? It had to be. You slowly looked up to his ears again, noting how they twitched and swiveled at the slightest sound. These mannerisms reminded you of your own cat, and you smiled at that thought.
It wasnât as though youâd never met a Thiren before, but this guy was seriously cute. Youâd even go so far as to call him pretty, with his soft lavender eyes and unfairly long lashes. His feline features made him all the more intriguing.Â
Your eyes were just beginning to wander to his impressive deltoids peeking out from his sleeveless uniform before your cat let out a loud meow in your arms, breaking the silence that had formed between you and the officer and making you realize youâd been ogling him the entire time.
You immediately snapped your gaze back to his face, trying to pretend like you hadnât just been looking him up and down like a creep. Luckily, it seemed like heâd been doing some staring of his own and was equally flustered.
You cleared your throat awkwardly and gave him a sheepish smile.
âWell, I should be getting back now. Thanks again for your help. Maybe Iâll see you around some time?â
You hoped that last part didnât sound too pathetic. Thankfully for you, his eyes seemed to light up at your words.Â
âYeah, for sure! Hope to see you again soon!â
He waved you off as you made your way home.
Walking the familiar path back to your apartment gave you some time to reflect on the interaction youâd just had. More specifically, your thoughts kept drifting back to the PubSec officer.
Heâd been so sweet and friendly. His upbeat energy was contagious, and even now you couldnât fight the grin spreading across your face as you remembered his cheerful laughter and blinding smiles. And he was easy on the eyes, charming and boyishly handsome.
Your stomach did a funny little flip when you thought about the last thing he said to you, how he sounded so excited at the prospect of running into you again. Youâd be lying to yourself if you said you didnât share his enthusiasm. His genuine mannerisms were refreshing, if not a little bit naĂŻve, and it made you want to get to know him better.Â
You suddenly paused, a slight frown overtaking your features. You were reading too far into this, werenât you? Of course you were. This guy was a PubSec officer, he was basically paid to be nice to civilians like you. And with how much he seemed to love his job, you bet heâd probably have the same happy grin on his face whether he was finding lost cats or arresting dangerous criminals.Â
And worst of all, you didnât even know his name! Youâd been so frazzled from the experience of almost losing your cat that introductions had been the furthest thing from your mind.
Another meow pulled you from your thoughts, reminding you that youâd been standing at the front door of your apartment for a while now without actually going inside. It was a careful balancing act to fish your keys out of your pocket while still holding your cat, but you managed to get the door open and place your cat inside safe and sound.
After double-checking your door was fully closed and locked, you sank down to the floor, letting out an exasperated sigh. Your cat happily plopped herself down in your lap, purring away as if she hadnât just nearly given you a heart attack and led you on a wild goose chase throughout town mere minutes ago.Â
As you lovingly scratched under her chin, you resolved that you had a harmless little crush on the very nice, very handsome PubSec officer who saved your cat, and it wasnât a big deal because youâd probably never talk to him again anyway. You couldnât even imagine how busy his life as an officer was, so what were the odds of your paths crossing again?
****
As it turns out, the odds were surprisingly high.
About a week had passed since the âcat incident,â and thoughts of the cute PubSec officer had only briefly crossed your mind.
You were standing in the pet aisle of the grocery store, deliberating between different brands of cat food. Much to your delight (see: annoyance), your cat had suddenly decided she no longer wanted to eat the food you had been buying her for years, and now you were on a mission to find something she wouldnât turn her little nose up at.Â
She stopped eating the chicken flavor, so do I go with tuna? Or would she like salmon better?
You were so absorbed in deliberating cat food flavors that you didnât notice a familiar figure peering over your shoulder.
âIf I were you, Iâd pick the salmon one.â
Your head whirled around in surprise as you were greeted with a cheery voice and unmistakable grin.Â
âOh, itâs you!â
Your feline savior smiled even wider knowing that you recognized him (not that he was easy to forget). He was clearly off-duty, as he was wearing plain clothes rather than his PubSec uniform. Without his bulky gear and long gloves, you were able to get a much better view of his muscles through his short-sleeved shirt.
Jeez, get a hold of yourself.
You mentally scolded yourself. You alternated your gaze between the cat food in your hands and his pretty purple eyes until you finally processed what he said.Â
âThanks for the recommendation! Do you have a cat too, then?â
He tilted his head to the side and brought a hand up under his chin, as if deliberating how to answer your question. It was such a simple yet adorable action, and it reignited the spark of attraction youâd felt when you first met him.Â
âHmmm, kinda? Theyâre not technically my cats. Like I said before, cats just really seem to like me for some reason, and a lot of strays like to come up to me while Iâm walking around or out on patrol. So I like to have cat food with me, just in case! Most cats really seem to like that salmon one youâre holding.â
So it wasnât enough that he was attractive, strong, kind-hearted, and honest, but he feeds stray cats, too? Whatâs next, heâs going to tell you he helps old ladies cross the street in his free time? Actually, nevermind; he absolutely does.
As your crush on this man started blooming all over again, you finally realized you didnât even know his name.
Quickly tossing the salmon cat food in your basket and placing the other flavors back on the shelf, you stuck your hand out in greeting.
âIâm so sorry, I never actually introduced myself. Whatâs your name?â
âOh yeah, youâre right! My nameâs Seth!â
He grabbed your hand and gave it an enthusiastic shake, smiling when you gave him your name in return. He repeated it back to you, as if trying out the way it sounded on his tongue, still shaking your hand all the while. His grip was firm yet gentle, and you couldnât help but admire how nicely your hand fit into his.Â
He finally dropped the handshake, and you briefly lamented the loss of contact. He spoke up again, clearly not in any rush to end the interaction.Â
âSo howâs your cat doing?â
You sighed before relaying the story of your cat suddenly becoming a picky eater, which made him laugh. From there, the conversation flowed easily between the two of you, as if you had known each other for ages.
You learned he was part of the Public Security Criminal Investigation Special Response Team, a difficult path for a PubSec officer but one he was dedicated to nonetheless. He loved cats (obviously), and he wasnât a fan of horror movies. You chimed in with tidbits of your own from time to time, but you were mostly content to just listen to Seth. Every now and then, you spared a glance downwards at his tail, which was swishing back and forth excitedly. It reminded you of how your cat looked when she was staring at a bird or squirrel out your window, engaged and laser-focused, and it made you smile internally.
You had no idea how much time had passed. The two of you were in your own little world, and it wasnât until you heard someone clearing their throat loudly that you realized you were still standing in the grocery store, effectively blocking access to the cat food shelf.
You and Seth both apologized profusely and backed up so an older woman could reach past you two. Thankfully, she didnât seem upset, and she even shot you a knowing wink as she shuffled away.Â
As much as you would have liked to keep talking to Seth, you unfortunately had other errands you needed to run today and you were sure Seth did as well.Â
âIâm sorry, I need to head out now, but it was really nice to see you again!â
You told him with a smile. You swore you saw his ears droop slightly, but he perked back up almost immediately.
âYeah, Iâm really glad I got to run into you! Hopefully Iâll see you again soon!â
You gave him a short wave goodbye before continuing on with the rest of your shopping.
Just like when you first met him, you kept replaying your interaction with Seth in your mind over and over. He was so easy to talk to, and you felt so comfortable around him despite this only being the second time youâd ever met.Â
Wait, did this mean you guys were friends now? Or were you more like acquaintances? Seth said he wanted to see you again and you certainly shared his sentiment, and the two of you had talked for so long about yourselves, so that probably made you friends at this point. Should you have gotten his phone number?
God, how did you keep fumbling this so badly? It was already a miracle you managed to bump into Seth at the grocery store, you doubted you would be lucky enough to cross paths with him again.Â
You felt bad for the old lady who was rooting for you. It seems like your infatuation with Seth was destined to be just that: infatuation, and nothing more. Besides, even if you somehow were able to see Seth again, he didnât seem like the kind of guy who was concerned with dating and romance. He had goals and dreams to pursue, and you were sure he only thought of you as a friend anyway.Â
No use worrying about it now, I guess.
You continued on with your errands, resolving that if you did end up meeting Seth again, you would take that as a sign and ask him for his number. Not that it would actually happen, though.
****
Okay, now you were convinced you had some kind of guardian angel or deity watching over you, because what were the chances of this?
It had been about two weeks since youâd talked to Seth at the grocery store, and you had all but given up on the prospect of bumping into him again. Youâd found yourself with a bit more free time than usual and to stave off the boredom, you decided to make a trip to the video store on Sixth Street.Â
Youâd only been there a few times, but they had a massive selection of movies and the siblings who ran the store were very nice, even if they did keep trying to convince you to buy a premium membership.Â
You expected to be greeted by one of the managers or their Bangboo when you entered Random Play, but instead you saw Seth standing behind the front counter. It was your turn to tilt your head in confusion as Seth gave you his usual enthusiastic greeting.Â
âHey! What are you doing here?â
That got a laugh out of you, shaking your head as you walked up to the counter.Â
âI feel like I should be asking you that. Do you work here?â
You doubted that Seth would have time for a second job or really any need for one, yet here he was. He chuckled, rubbing the back of his neck and thinking for a moment before responding.Â
âKinda? But not really. Iâm friends with the managers here and theyâve been really nice to me, so I offered to help promote movies for them every now and then!â
Was there anyone in New Eridu this guy wasnât friends with? It was sweet that he spent his free time helping Wise and Belle around the shop, especially when he probably didnât get much free time in the first place.Â
You leaned your elbows on the counter, giving Seth a cheeky grin.
âWell then Mr. Promoter, do you have any good recommendations for me?â
Seth lit up like a Christmas tree, beaming at you excitedly. He moved from his spot behind the counter and wrapped a hand around your wrist, leading you over to one of the many displays along the wall.Â
He searched for a moment before he let out a little âah ha!,â pulling a movie from the shelf and placing it in your hands.
âHave you ever heard of a movie called âDimensional Musketeerâ? Itâs about this mysterious guy who goes into Hollows to fight Etherals, and heâs got this cool weapon that lets him take down even the strongest enemies! Itâs one of my favorite movies of all time!â
He was talking so excitedly fast, it was almost hard to understand him. Still, if this was one of Sethâs favorites, then it was good enough for you. You smiled at him, pulling the movie case close to your chest.
âThat sounds awesome! Iâll definitely give it a watch then.â
You thought youâd seen Seth happy before, but the joy on his face right now was incomparable.Â
âGreat! Actually, why donât we watch it together? This movie never gets old no matter how many times I see it, and I really want to know what youâll think of it!â
It took you a moment before the implications of his words finally set in.Â
Was he⊠asking you on a date?
It seemed like a plausible explanation, but then again with how friendly and frankly oblivious Seth was, it was equally possible he just wanted to watch his favorite movie with a friend and nothing more.Â
Regardless, you werenât going to pass up on this opportunity now, not when you had messed up so badly before. You tried not to let your tone betray how excited you were as you nodded in response.
âThat sounds great! Do you want to come over to my place tonight? Iâm sure my cat will be happy to see you again.â
Seth frowned slightly, looking bashful.Â
âAre you sure? I donât want to feel like Iâm inviting myself over.â
You laughed, tucking the movie case under your arm so you could grab both of Sethâs hands in yours.Â
âI wouldnât have offered if I wasnât sure. And youâre not inviting yourself over, Iâm inviting you over, silly.â
Seth glanced down at where your hands were joined together, and you thought you saw a pinkish hue spreading across his cheeks. Â
âY-yeah, I guess youâre right. Tonight at your place is it then! Do you use Knock Knock? I can add you right now!â
You let go of Sethâs hands so you could reach into your pocket and pull out your phone, handing it over to him so he could input his contact information.Â
When he handed you your phone back, you saw he put a little â(â§ââŠ)â after his contact name, and you resisted the urge to squeal out loud from the cuteness of it all.
You followed Seth back to the front counter with the intention of paying for the movie. As you pulled out your wallet, though, he stopped you.
âDonât worry about it, this oneâs on me!Â
âAre you sure? I really donât mind.â
âOf course! I, uh- I actually have the premium membership here, so I may as well put it to good use.â
Oh, poor Seth. Of course a sweet guy like him wouldnât be able to say no to the managersâ persuasions.
âThanks, I appreciate it! I have to get going now, but Iâll see you later tonight!â
Though certainly not unwelcome, you werenât prepared to host guests and your apartment definitely needed some cleaning up before Seth came over.Â
âYouâre welcome! And yeah, see you later!â
As soon as you made it out of the door of Random Play, you took a deep breath, trying to calm your racing heart.Â
Things had gone perfectly this time. Youâd actually managed to secure a kind-of-maybe-not-but-also-maybe-yes date with Seth, and you were determined to make sure everything went smoothly.Â
****
You arrived home a little while later, having stopped on your way back to pick up some snacks and drinks for the evening. You started on the task of tidying up your space, letting your thoughts wander as you flited from chore to chore.Â
Should you dress up tonight? Or just keep it casual? Should you try to make a move? Was this even a date to begin with, or were you just reading too far into things?
On one hand, there certainly were signs that Seth liked you as more than just a friend. All those times youâd bumped into him, he seemed so genuinely happy to see you. Whenever you had to leave, you noted subtle signs of disappointment, whether it be a small dip in his near-permanent smile or a slight droop in his ears. And he was the one who suggested you watch a movie together in the first place. That had to mean something, right? You bit your bottom lip, trying to suppress your excited grin at the thought of Seth reciprocating your feelings. You could feel your face heating up and your heart beating incessantly against your chest.Â
But at the same time, you couldnât fight the nagging thoughts lingering at the back of your mind, planting seeds of doubt and uncertainty. For as much as Seth wore his heart on his sleeve, you found him surprisingly hard to read. He was such a good-hearted and friendly guy that the cheerful smiles and warm greetings, the constant acts of kindness and generosity, the hopeful promises of meeting again, were probably something he shared with everyone. Were you selfish to think you were special somehow? If Seth didnât like you back, would it ruin the friendship youâd managed to build thus far?
That thought almost knocked the breath from your lungs. You couldnât let that happen. Youâd much rather spend the rest of your days silently and hopelessly pining after Seth than lose him entirely.Â
Suddenly, this movie night didnât seem like such a great idea anymore. But with how ecstatic Seth had been when you agreed to watch his favorite movie with him, you knew it would crush him if you backed out now.Â
You didnât even realize how much time had passed until you heard a ping from your phone, jolting you out of your anxious ruminations. As youâd expected, it was a message from Seth, asking if it was still okay for him to come over soon.
No turning back now.
You sent back an affirmative reply before tossing your phone down to finish preparing for Sethâs arrival. You decided on an outfit that wasnât too flashy but certainly a bit nicer than what youâd wear around the house. After setting out the food and drinks, you opted to sit on the couch, nervously fiddling with your fingers and trying your best to keep your nervous thoughts at bay.Â
You nearly fell off the couch in surprise when you finally heard a knock at your door. You stood at the doorway for a moment, taking one last moment to smooth out your clothes and tidy up your appearance before taking a deep breath. Seth was already beaming at you when you opened the door, and it helped put you at ease.Â
Thatâs right. Itâs just Seth. No need to overthink things.Â
All of your reassured thoughts flew out the window when Seth pulled you in for a tight hug, squeezing you against him in a near-crushing grip. The feeling of being pressed into his firm chest and his muscular arms wrapped around your frame had your face heating up quickly.Â
âItâs nice to see you again!â
His words made you burn even hotter, and you prayed Seth couldnât feel your embarrassed warmth through his shirt. You hesitantly reciprocated his hug, pushing your face closer into his chest in an attempt to hide your fluster.
âYou too! But you know, I just saw you a few hours ago.â
Seth pulled back from the hug, giving you an unfairly adorable pout.Â
âI know, but itâs still nice to see you again.â
Your heart couldnât handle such unabashed sincerity, and you could only smile and laugh awkwardly as you stepped aside to let him into your apartment, hoping he wouldnât notice the flush still present on your cheeks.Â
Seth had hardly taken 2 steps inside before your cat came trotting up to him, meowing and brushing up against his legs affectionately. He chuckled, reaching down to pick her up. Your cat was purring louder than youâd ever heard, starting to fall asleep in his arms almost instantaneously. You couldnât even bring yourself to be mad, your heart melting at the adorable sight before you. Seth finally turned his attention back to you.
âThanks again for having me over!âÂ
You shook your head, closing the door and leading him to the living room.
âOf course! Iâm glad you could make it. Iâm excited for the movie!â
âMe too!â
You crouched down in front of the TV, setting up the movie while he got comfortable with your cat now snoozing peacefully in his lap. Once everything was ready, you moved to take a seat on the couch next to Seth before you paused for a moment. How close should you sit to him? If you sit too close, it could be awkward. But if you sat on the far end of the couch from him, wouldnât that be more awkward? He seemed to take note of your hesitancy, giving you a confused look before patting the empty space next to him.Â
âCâmon, the movieâs starting!â
Seth having made up your mind for you, you plopped down in the spot he designated for you, your thighs just brushing up against his. You stole a glance at Seth out of the corner of your eye to gauge his reaction, but he was already engrossed in the movie. You directed your gaze back to the screen, resolving that you would just focus on enjoying the movie in favor of dwelling on Sethâs intentions.Â
But as the evening went on, you found it harder and harder to stick to your resolve. While Seth remained fixated on the movie, you remained fixated on him. You realized this was the first time youâd really been able to admire Seth up close. Of course, youâd stolen plenty of glances at him during the times youâd spoken with him, but you had tried to keep most of your attention on his words, not wanting to be caught staring.
Now though, with Seth being so enthralled by the movie, you figured it was okay to let your gaze linger on him for a bit longer. You were positive he wouldnât even notice.Â
The light from the TV screen illuminated his features, casting a soft radiance over him. In the relative darkness of the room, his hair seemed to glow, reflecting the light like a fresh blanket of snow. His bright purple eyes seemed somehow brighter, full of excitement and contentment. His ears were standing straight up, not wanting to miss a single word of the movie.Â
But most of all, your eyes kept drifting back to Sethâs tail.
It was swaying back and forth the way youâd seen it before when he was focused or excited, and it took all your willpower not to reach out and run your fingers through the fluffy tufts of fur. Whenever youâd encountered Seth previously, your eyes had always drifted down to his tail, your thoughts wandering to how it would feel to pet it. Realistically, it probably wouldnât feel any different than when you pet your cat, but a part of you thought it might even be softer.Â
You knew it was such a weird fixation, and Thirens probably had to deal with rude people trying to touch them all the time, but youâd never be able to stop thinking about his tail if you didnât get to pet it at least once.Â
You took a deep breath before steeling your resolve, shifting your position on the couch so you were now facing him with your legs crossed.Â
âHey, Seth? Would it be okay if⊠I touched your tail? It just looks so soft and I keep wondering what it would feel like.â
The question tumbled forth from your lips faster than youâd meant it to. Sethâs jaw dropped at your words, a deep blush quickly spreading across the expanse of his face. Â
âYou want to touch⊠my tail?â
He sounded so dumbfounded by your request, and you were afraid youâd overstepped a boundary.Â
âOnly if thatâs okay with you! Iâm sorry if that was a weird ask. You can just forget I said anything-â
You started to backtrack, but Seth cut you off.Â
âNo! Youâre totally fine! You can touch my tail if you want to, no problem at all!â
He was trying to sound nonchalant, but his nervous tone betrayed his words. A blush was starting to spread across his cheeks, and you swore his breathing picked up. You tried to give him another out, not wanting to make him uncomfortable.
âSeth, if youâre not okay with it, thatâs totally fine. I swear I wonât be offended.â
He took a deep breath before shaking his head. He grinned at you like heâd done a million times before, but this one felt different somehow, more vulnerable and earnest.
âIf itâs you, itâs okay. I promise.â
Now it was your turn to blush. You were caught off-guard by how earnest his response was, and it was all you could do to nod in response.
Seth shifted on the couch until his tail was in your lap, the movement causing your cat to hop off from her perch on his legs and meander away with a meow of discontent. Despite his best efforts to keep it under control, his tail still swished nervously, but the softness brushing against your legs was a pleasant sensation. You reached a cautious hand up, gently running your fingers through the white strands of fur.
You were right: his fur was somehow softer than your own cat. You found yourself almost memorized by the impossibly fluffy texture, and you had to stop yourself from burying your face in his tail as you imagined how nice it would feel against your cheeks.
You turned your attention back to Seth, your hands still stroking his fur absentmindedly. He was more flustered than youâd ever seen him, fiddling with his fingers in his lap while avoiding your gaze. You could feel your own face heating up as you noticed a tension building between you two.Â
âThank you for letting me touch your tail, Seth. Itâs uh- really soft.â
Youâd meant to try to lighten the atmosphere a bit, but you internally cringed at how awkward you sounded. Sethâs ears perked up at your words, his blush now spreading all the way down his neck. He only nodded in response, swallowing thickly before finally looking at you again. He opened and closed his mouth a few times before finally speaking in an uncharacteristically timid voice.Â
âCan I, uh- I mean would it be okay if I.. kissed you?â
âWait, what?â
You honestly couldnât believe what youâd just heard. Seth wanted to kiss you? Right now?
While your brain was short-circuiting, Seth began to panic. His face was an alarming shade of red, and his tail was swishing about wildly.Â
âWait, do you not like me uh- you know, like that? Iâm so sorry! I just thought with you wanting to touch my tail, you⊠you know. But if not, thatâs totally okay, too! Iâm really sorry!â
You wanted to slap yourself for your ignorance. Of course, Thirenâs tails were special to them, and asking Seth to touch his tail was a huge deal! This certainly wasnât the outcome youâd been expecting when youâd first asked, but you couldnât believe that Seth reciprocated your feelings. Your words came out in a rushed frenzy as you tried to salvage the painfully awkward situation.Â
âNo! I mean, yes, I do like you! A lot, actually. I just didnât think you felt the same way.â
Seth tilted his head to the side, staring at you like youâd grown an extra limb.Â
âOf course I like you! Iâve liked you since I first met you! How could I not? Youâre attractive and funny and nice and you like cats and-â
You cut off Sethâs rambling by sealing your lips over his, pouring all of your feelings for him into the kiss. If Seth had continued listing everything he liked about you, youâre sure your heart would have exploded.Â
Seth was initially caught off guard, but he quickly recovered and kissed you back with equal fervor, reaching a hand up to cup your cheek.Â
Kissing Seth was everything you hoped it would be and more. His lips fit against yours like a puzzle piece. He seemed a little hesitant and unsure of what to do, but you were happy to take the lead, moving your lips softly and gently against his so as not to overwhelm him.Â
You only pulled away when your lungs were burning for air. Seth wasnât in much better shape, his breath fanning across your face as he panted heavily.
For a while, neither of you spoke, choosing instead to bask in the passionate moment you just shared. Finally, Seth broke the silence.
âSo, uh- was that okay?â
He asked with a sheepish grin, his face still painted with a pink flush. God, he was so disgustingly adorable. You swore you were getting the same feeling of cuteness aggression you got whenever your cat did something precious.
You gave in to your impulses, reaching up to squish Sethâs cheeks in both your hands. You yanked him close until your nose was brushing against his. Seth let out a yelp of surprise, his ears sticking straight up.
âYouâre so fucking cute.â
You mumbled before pressing your mouth to his once more. One hand reached up to run through his soft hair, your fingers barely brushing against the base of his ears.
He shivered at your touch, his tail wrapping around your waist to drag you further into him until you were almost sitting on his lap.Â
The kiss was indulgent and lazy yet no less passionate than before. You had all the time in the world to kiss Seth now, and you intended on savoring it.Â
After who knows how long, Seth pulled away first this time, planting a final kiss on your nose and leaning his forehead against yours.Â
âYouâre way cuter.â
You giggled at his sweet words, and Seth couldnât help but laugh with you. As you leaned in for another kiss, you made a mental note to give your cat as many treats as she wanted, silently thanking her for running away from home and leading you to the man you never knew you belonged with.

Niko is such an intriguing character to me.
She's fun and funny, earnest and optimistic and kind. She seems to have a sort of innocence about her; her optimism veers into naivete, and those iconic rose-colored glasses tint her world view maybe a little too much.Â
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/87fa27590ea7b78126ba1c3c0aca6af5/a8b31cb6093eacc1-e3/s540x810/62a030f930eae8422e0ea73cebe03d706af2eeea.jpg)
But at her heart, I feel like Niko's story is perhaps one of the most relatable in the show.
She isn't a psychic. She isn't a shapeshifter. She has no special powers at all. She's not dead already. She hasn't spent thirty-five years learning about all the strangest things the world has to offer.
She's just a girl, struggling with a very real, very universal, very down-to-earth problem.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/05086e3122c3ee2294594f6820622bfc/a8b31cb6093eacc1-07/s540x810/5c40b730f929e8676470155a3d12d1127b35a399.jpg)
Every person alive will lose someone.
Every person alive will learn to grapple with grief.
Every person alive will take a look around them at some point, at friends and family, and realize how quickly they might be lost.
Every person alive has had cause to worry about their own death, and how the future might bring it.
We see Niko come to terms with all of this, and her major emotional character arc centers largely on this processing of grief and her fear of her own mortality.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/3667a58fe7434102b033d4bddc8918a0/a8b31cb6093eacc1-65/s540x810/18115e5fc998611f97a4d158b6fe2acfbc9d367c.jpg)
When we meet her, she's a shut-in. She isn't talking to anyone about anything, and especially not about her father. She can't even stand to read her mother's letters or write one in return.
We see her fear of death manifest during the Case of the Devlin House, when she opts to sit out entirely; it's fear, too, that urges her into action, when she sets out to assist her friends.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/779f448da524fee5bd80392588dc57b6/a8b31cb6093eacc1-39/s540x810/313f174304c9d12eed033783c2a4ddfbed47d2dc.jpg)
In the Case of the Lighthouse Leapers, she realizes for the first time that she can make an impact in keeping the people she cares for safe. It's Niko that darts in just in time to keep Crystal from walking off the cliff and into a sea monster's waiting maw.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/447a1dc1783bf4ebbeb1e23f57d044b0/a8b31cb6093eacc1-f9/s540x810/387a6efae469b356c8c35890ca1a73fefe8a5651.jpg)
As she becomes more confident, she also becomes more willing to directly face her own grief. She reads her mother's letters, and then, in time, manages to send one in return.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/9c4544e10d8b4f8d156291fed5dac5fe/a8b31cb6093eacc1-e3/s540x810/66c63063575e63fb614946f8c2f1fc198031e9e1.jpg)
In the final episode, she notes that she's ready to call her mother; she's processed her feelings enough to be willing to put them into words, to speak about this unspeakable thing that's been living there inside her.
She's managed, too, to come to terms with her fear of death. She is brave not because of a lack of fear, but in spite of her fear. She's afraid when the boys are kidnapped, but she goes with Crystal to save them anyway.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/d7d688419eb5a495639d1364af223eae/a8b31cb6093eacc1-05/s540x810/eed3bb409518720fdcae33c3d01c7221126e61b5.jpg)
This fearful girl, lost in grief, who couldn't leave her room at the start of the series, steps in front of one of her friends and takes the death that's meant for her â and in that moment, her character arc is complete. She's overcome the fear of her own mortality at last, in the most impactful way possible.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/ed65b1b42cb89c81b535781ff191754c/a8b31cb6093eacc1-89/s540x810/c1c11e711eb2ce6f95cce675a9f6d0f7af033c4a.jpg)
Seeing Niko struggle with her grief, and come to terms with her own mortality, is the sort of emotional narrative arc that you don't usually see on screen. It's beautifully handled, and Dead Boy Detectives is stronger because of that.

A/n: Had something in mind..âš
The Tower was already buzzing with activity. It was rare for everyone to be together, but when they were, the Tower seemed to vibrate with energy. At the center of it all was you, the bright and lively soul who illuminated even the darkest corners of the team.
You had a way about you that drew people in. Your infectious laughter could lift the heaviest spirits, and your smile seemed to spread warmth. Your optimism and unwavering positivity were like a beacon, guiding your teammates through their toughest times. Everyone admired you, but no one more so than Natasha Romanoff.
Natasha was always the stoic warrior, rarely showing her emotions. But you had effortlessly broken down those walls. With your steadfast support and genuine kindness, you became Natashaâs closest confidante and, although she would never say it out loud, the anchor of her heart.
This morning was no exception. You bounced into the common room, your eyes sparkling with excitement. "Good morning, everyone!" you called out, your voice like a melody echoing down the hall.
Tony, tinkering with a new gadget, looked up and grinned. "Well, if it isnât our sunshine," he teased, causing the rest of the team to laugh.
You made your way to the kitchen, where Steve was pouring himself a cup of coffee. "Morning, Cap," you said cheerfully, reaching for a cup for yourself. "Whatâs on the agenda today?"
Steve smiled, appreciating your tireless positivity. "Just a meeting in a bit. But first, breakfast. You know the drill."
As you were about to sit down with the others at the table, Natasha came in from her morning training. The moment she saw you, her expression softened. "Hey," she greeted, kissing you on the cheek.
You beamed at her. "Nat! I was just getting some coffee. Want some?" Natasha nodded, a rare smile tugging at her lips. "Thanks, I could use it."
Days in the Tower were often filled with training sessions, meetings, and occasional sparring matches. You had a knack for brightening even the most mundane activities. You organized movie nights, cooked meals for the team, and always found time to lend an ear. Your favorite spot was the rooftop garden, where you often pulled Natasha to relax and enjoy the view.
One evening, as you lay in the garden, you asked Natasha, "Do you ever wonder if we make a difference?" Your eyes reflected the sparkling stars. Natasha was surprised by the question. "Of course we do," she replied firmly. "Every life we save, every fight we win, it all counts."
You smiled, a small, wistful smile. "I know. Sometimes it just feels like thereâs so much darkness. Itâs nice to have a reminder that thereâs still light." In that moment, Natasha realized how much you meant to her. She placed a hand on your shoulder. "You are that light. Never forget that."
Your laughter snapped Natasha out of her thoughts. She watched as you interacted with the team, your eyes full of warmth and kindness. Moments like these filled Natashaâs heart with emotions she had long buried. She felt a protective urge towards you, a desire to shield you from the harsh realities of the world.
"Nat, youâre awfully quiet this morning," Clint, ever the observant Hawkeye, gently teased. "Whatâs on your mind?" Natasha offered a rare, genuine smile. "Just enjoying the moment," she replied, her gaze meeting yours again, making her heart swell with joy.
The mission seemed straightforward on paper: infiltrate an old HYDRA facility, gather intel, and get out. They had done it a hundred times. But as they moved through the dark, abandoned corridors, an eerie feeling spread.
"Stay alert," Steve's voice crackled through their earpieces. "Something doesnât feel right." Eager to help, you moved up with Natasha. "Iâve got your back." you said, flashing a confident smile. "Just stay close to me," Natasha responded, her protective instincts kicking in.
They advanced cautiously, each step echoing through the silence. Tonyâs scanners were active, searching for hidden threats. Suddenly, a blip on the radar caught his attention. "Weâve got movement," he announced. "Southwest corner, two floors down."
Steve gave the signal to move in. They split into pairs, covering each other's backs as they navigated the labyrinthine building. You and Natasha moved with practiced precision, your trust in each other evident in your fluid movements.
"How many are we dealing with?" you asked, scanning the shadows. "Looks like a small group," Tony replied. "Shouldn't be a big deal."
"Famous last words," Natasha muttered, making you laugh. As they reached the designated area, the building began to tremble. The walls shook, and the ceiling cracked. "Itâs a trap!" Tony shouted, but it was too late. The structure collapsed around them.
"Y/N, Watch out!" Natasha called as debris began to fall. They dodged the larger pieces, but in the chaos, you were separated from the group. You called out, your voice filled with fear but still hopeful. "Nat! Tony! Where are you?"
A beam crashed down in front of you, blocking your path. You turned to find another exit, but it was too late. A massive steel beam, loosened by the collapsing structure, fell toward you. You tried to dodge, but it struck your left leg, pinning you to the ground.
Pain shot through your body, intense and unrelenting. You screamed, a sound that echoed through the collapsing building. The team heard your cry and fought through the rubble to reach you.
Natasha found you first. Her heart sank at the sight of you, trapped under the beam, blood pooling around you. "Hey, Iâm here," she called, her voice trembling with uncharacteristic emotion.
"I-It hurts so much," you gasped, tears streaming down your face. "I canât move.."
"Itâs going to be okay. Weâll get you out of here. Just stay with me, okay, detka?" Natasha said, her voice calm despite the panic she felt inside.
The rest of the team arrived, and together they managed to lift the beam just enough to pull you free. They rushed you back to the Tower, the urgency of the situation weighing heavily on them.
In the medical wing, the doctors took over immediately, wheeling you into surgery. The team waited outside, the air thick with tension and worry. Natasha paced back and forth, unable to sit still, her mind filled with fear and guilt.
Hours seemed to stretch into eternity. Finally, the doors to the OR opened and Dr. Cho approached the worried group. Natasha stepped forward. "How is she?" she asked, her voice barely steady.
Cho sighed, pulling down her mask. "Sheâs stable, but the damage to her leg was severe. We did everything we could, but we couldnât save it. We had to amputate above the knee."
The words hit Natasha like a punch to the gut. She nodded slowly, trying to process the information. "Can I see her?"
"Sheâs still unconscious," Cho said gently. "But you can be there when she wakes up." Natasha nodded again and followed Cho to your room. She sat by your bed, holding your hand and whispering comforting words. When you finally began to stir, Natashaâs heart pounded in her chest.
Your eyes fluttered open, and you looked around groggily. "Nat?" you murmured, your voice weak. "Iâm here, Y/N," Natasha said softly, squeezing your hand. "Iâm right here."
You smiled weakly, your eyes beginning to clear. But then you noticed the expression on Natashaâs face, a mix of relief and something else you couldnât quite place. "Whatâs wrong? Iâm okay, Iâm here.." you asked, a hint of fear creeping into your voice.
Natasha struggled to find the words, her throat tight with emotion. Before she could speak, Cho stepped in, her face serious as she chose her words carefully. "Your leg was severely damaged by the beam... Y/N, we did everything we could to save it, but⊠it wasnât enough."
"What do you mean?" Your eyes widened, your breath catching. "Iâm so sorry. We had to amputate your leg above the knee." Your face went pale, your voice trembling. "My leg⊠itâs gone?"
Cho nodded, her eyes full of compassion. "Yes. I know itâs incredibly hard to hear. Iâm truly sorry."
The room fell into silence. You continued to stare at her, your mind overwhelmed by the news. "W-What..?" you whispered, shaking your head. "No.. I.. I can feel it, that-" throwing off the blanket, your eyes widening in disbelief at the empty space where your leg used to be.
You tried to move it, but it wasnât there. The realization hit you like a tidal wave. You said nothing, just stared at the empty space, your hands trembling.
Natasha leaned closer, her voice full of empathy. "Iâm so sorry, Y/N. Weâre here for you. I'm here for you.â
But you were in shock, unable to fully grasp the reality of your situation. Tears streamed down your face as you struggled to cope with your loss. Natasha stayed by your side, holding your hand and offering what comfort she could, knowing this was just the beginning of a long and difficult journey for both of you.
The days in the medical wing were a whirlwind of pain, medication, and the constant hum of machines. You lay in bed, your eyes often vacant as you stared at the sterile white ceiling. Your once bright smile was gone, replaced by a hollow expression that pained everyone who visited.
Natasha was a constant presence by your side. She held your hand, whispered comforting words, and even tried to coax a faint smile from you. But you were distant, your light dimmed by the weight of your loss.
One afternoon, Steve and Tony visited you, bringing a bouquet of colorful flowers. "Hey, sunshine," Tony greeted, his usual confidence tempered by concern. "We brought you something to brighten up this place."
You glanced at the flowers and managed a small nod. "Thank you," you murmured, your voice barely more than a whisper.
Steve sat on the edge of your bed, his eyes full of empathy. "How are you holding up?" You forced a smile, but it didnât reach your eyes. "Iâm okay, Steve. Just... tired."
They all knew you werenât okay. The vibrant, happy Y/N they all loved was disappearing, and it broke their hearts to see you like this.
As the days turned into weeks, the team visited you regularly. Clint brought your favorite snacks, books to keep your mind occupied. But despite their efforts, you remained distant, a shadow of your former self.
One evening, as Natasha sat by your bed, she gently brushed a strand of hair from your face. "You know, itâs okay to not be okay," she said softly.
Your eyes filled with tears. "I donât know how to be myself anymore," you admitted, your voice breaking. "Everything feels different. I feel different."
Natashaâs heart ached for you. She leaned in closer, resting her forehead against yours. "Weâll find a new normal, Y/N. Together. Youâre still you, and you still mean the world to us."
Finally, the day came when you were discharged from the medical wing. The team gathered to bring you home, their faces a mix of relief and concern. As they helped you into the wheelchair, Natasha knelt beside you. "Ready to go home?" she asked, trying to sound hopeful.
You nodded, but the sadness in your eyes was unmistakable. "Yes. Letâs go."
Back at the Tower, the atmosphere was subdued. You moved through the halls with a quiet distance, no longer organizing movie nights or cooking meals. Most of your time was spent in your room, avoiding the rooftop garden you once loved.
The team watched helplessly as you withdrew further. Your laughter, once a joyful sound that echoed through the Tower, was now a distant memory. You no longer greeted anyone with your usual cheerfulness, and the light in your eyes had gone out.
Natasha was the most affected. She missed the Y/N who pulled her to the garden to watch the sunset, who made her laugh with silly jokes, who had become her rock. She tried to reach you, to break through the wall you had built around yourself, but it was like trying to catch smoke with her hands.
One morning, Cho informed Natasha that it was time to remove your bandages. "Itâs common for patients to need emotional support when they see their stump for the first time," she explained gently. "It would be helpful if you could be there for her."
Natasha nodded, understanding the gravity of the moment. She entered your room, finding you standing by the window. "Hey," she said softly, closing the door behind her.
You turned around, surprise flickering across your face. "What are you doing here?"
"I thought Iâd sit with you while Cho removes the bandages," Natasha replied, trying to sound casual.
"I donât need you," you said, your voice rising with frustration. "I can do this on my own."
Natasha shook her head, her expression determined. "Iâm staying, Y/N. No arguments."
You glared at her, but Natashaâs resolve didnât waver. Finally, you sighed in resignation. "Fine. Do what you want."
Cho entered and began the careful process of removing the bandages. You kept your eyes fixed on the ceiling, determined not to look. Natasha held your hand, offering silent comfort.
As the last layer of bandage was removed, you caught a glimpse of your stump out of the corner of your eye. Your breath caught, and you turned your head, unable to avoid it any longer. The sight of your leg..or what was left of it, triggered a wave of nausea and despair.
You tried to hold back your tears, biting your lip until it bled. But the emotional dam broke, and you began to sob uncontrollably. "I-Icanât do this... I canât live like.. t-this..."
Natasha pulled you into a tight embrace, her own tears falling silently. "You can, Y/N. And you will. Weâll get through this together, I promise."
You clung to her, your sobs shaking your entire body. Cho, seeing the emotional toll, finished quickly and quietly left the room. The team, waiting just outside, could hear your cries, their own hearts breaking for their friend. They knew they couldnât fix this for you, but they would be there every step of the way, offering support as best they could.
The days that followed were some of the hardest you had ever faced. You were engulfed by a whirlwind of emotions, grief, anger, and a deep sense of loss. The team continued to give you space, but they were never far away, always ready to offer support.
Natasha stayed close, offering a steady presence that you found both comforting and frustrating. It was a delicate balance, and Natasha navigated it with patience and love.
One morning, you woke up to find Tony standing at your door, a wide grin on his face. "Good morning, sunshine. Mind if I come in?"
You sighed and sat up in bed. "What is it, Tony? If itâs more flowers or breakfast in bed, I might scream." Tony laughed. "No flowers. But I have a surprise for you. Something Iâve been working on."
You raised an eyebrow. "Iâm not really in the mood for surprises, Tony."
"Trust me, youâll want to see this," Tony insisted, stepping aside to reveal a sleek, high-tech case. Curiosity piqued, you watched as Tony opened the case to reveal a prosthetic leg, crafted with meticulous precision and advanced technology. It was sleek and metallic, with intricate designs hinting at its capabilities.
"Is that...?" Your voice trailed off, your eyes wide with disbelief.
"Yes," Tony said, his grin widening. "I built it especially for you. Itâs got the latest tech. Itâs strong, lightweight, and itâs going to help you get back on your feet, well literally."
You stared at the prosthetic, emotions swirling inside you. "Tony, I donât know what to say."
"How about we start by trying it on?" Tony suggested gently. "Natasha and I will be with you every step of the way." With a mix of apprehension and skepticism, you nodded. "Okay."
The process of fitting the prosthetic was meticulous. Tony and a team of specialists worked carefully to ensure it was comfortable and secure. Natasha stayed by your side, offering silent comfort.
As they adjusted the straps and made final tweaks, a wave of fear washed over you. What if it didnât work? What if you could never walk properly again?
"Are you ready to try it out?" Tony asked, his tone encouraging.
You took a deep breath and nodded. With the help of Natasha and Tony, you stood up cautiously, feeling the weight of the prosthetic beneath you. It felt foreign, unfamiliar, but it also felt like a new beginning.
"Take it slow," Natasha advised, holding your hand firmly. You took your first tentative steps. It was awkward and shaky, and you nearly stumbled. Frustration and anger bubbled up inside you. "This is impossible," you muttered, your voice tinged with defeat.
"Youâre doing great," Tony reassured you. "Just keep going, one step at a time."
You continued, each step harder than the last. The prosthetic felt unnatural, and your movements were jerky and uneven. After a few laps around the room, you stopped, breathless and frustrated.
"I canât do this," you said, tears of anger and disappointment streaming down your face. "I canât walk properly. This is useless!"
Natasha stepped in, her eyes flashing with determination and frustration. She cupped your face in her hands, forcing you to look at her. "Now listen to me, Y/N," Natasha said firmly, her voice both angry and urgent. "I know this is hard. I know itâs tougher than anything youâve ever faced. But you have to keep going! I canât stand to see you suffering like this!"
You stared at her, shocked by the intensity in her voice.
Natasha continued, her grip gentle but unyielding. "You keep talking down to yourself. But you need to channel that anger where it belongs. At us. At me! We couldnât get you out of that building in time. I couldnât get you out in time, be mad at us, but stop tearing yourself apart."
You felt a surge of emotions, anger, determination, and something else, something stronger. You nodded slowly, your tears falling faster. "Okay, Nat. Okay."
The following days were filled with intense training. Tony and the team set up a rehabilitation room, equipped with everything you needed to regain your strength and mobility. Natasha was there for every session, encouraging you and celebrating every small victory.
The training was grueling. You had to learn how to balance again, how to walk with the prosthetic, and how to cope with the physical and emotional challenges. There were moments of intense frustration and doubt when you wanted to throw the prosthetic across the room.
One afternoon, after a particularly hard session, you sat on the floor, sweat dripping from your forehead. "This is so hard," you said, your voice tinged with exhaustion and defeat.
"I know," Natasha replied, sitting next to you. "But youâre doing amazing. Look how far youâve come." You looked at the prosthetic, your eyes filled with determination and a glimmer of hope. "I just want to feel normal again."
"You will," Natasha assured you. "Step by step."
As the weeks went by, your progress was slow but steady. You became more comfortable with the prosthetic, moving with increasing confidence and grace. The team watched with pride, their admiration for your strength and resilience growing with each passing day.
One evening, after a successful training session, Tony gathered everyone in the common room. "I think we need to celebrate," he announced, holding up a bottle of champagne.
You laughed, the sound bright and clear. "What are we celebrating?"
"Your incredible progress," Tony replied, popping the cork. "To Y/N, the strongest person I know." The team raised their glasses and toasted to you and the journey ahead. You looked around at your family, your heart filled with gratitude and hope.
But despite your progress, you often doubted your worth, especially in your relationship with Natasha.
One night, as you lay in bed together, you couldnât shake the feelings of inadequacy that gnawed at you. Natasha lay next to you, reading a book, while you stared at the ceiling, lost in thought.
"Natasha," you began hesitantly, your voice barely more than a whisper. Natasha looked up, concern immediately etched on her face. "Whatâs wrong?"
You took a deep breath, trying to gather your courage. "Do you still find me... attractive?" Natasha frowned in confusion. "Of course I do. Why would you even ask that?"
You turned away, your eyes filling with tears. "Iâm not the same person I was before the accident. What if you donât want me anymore?"
Natasha set her book aside and moved closer, gently turning you to face her. "Y/N, look at me," she said softly. "Youâre still the same person I fell in love with. Your strength, your kindness, your spirit..None of that has changed."
You shook your head, your voice trembling. "But my body has changed. I donât feel like myself anymore. Iâm afraid you see me differently."
Natasha cupped your face in her hands, her eyes filled with unwavering love. "Your body may be different, but that doesnât change how I feel about you. Youâre beautiful, Y/N, in every way that matters. I love you for who you are, not just for your appearance."
Your tears flowed freely, and you clung to Natasha, your fears slowly dissolving in the warmth of her embrace. "Iâm sorry for doubting you," you whispered. "Itâs just... sometimes itâs hard."
"I understand," Natasha said gently. "But youâre not alone in this. Weâll get through it together, remember?"
Months had passed since your accident, and your hard work in physical therapy had paid off. With the unwavering support of your team, you had regained your strength and confidence. One morning, you woke up with a renewed sense of purpose. You strapped on your prosthetic and joined the team in the kitchen.
"Morning, Y/N!" Tony greeted you with a broad grin. The entire team was gathered, and Steve stepped forward with a small black box.
"We have something for you," Steve said, handing you the box. You opened it to find a sleek, high-tech communication device. "Is this...?"
"Welcome back to the team," Tony announced. "Weâve got a little mission for you, if youâre ready." You felt a surge of emotions. "Iâm ready."
The team briefed you on the mission: a simple reconnaissance at an industrial complex. As they flew to the site, Natasha held your hand, offering silent comfort. Upon arrival, they split into pairs, you and Natasha working together.
As you navigated the complex, you felt a mix of excitement and nervousness. You encountered a group of armed men, and your training kicked in. With Natasha by your side, you quickly overwhelmed the threat.
"You did it," Natasha said, pride shining in her eyes. "We did it," you replied, feeling a deep sense of fulfillment.
Back in the Quinjet, the team congratulated you. "Welcome back, Y/N," Steve said, clapping you on the shoulder.
You looked around at your teammates, feeling deep gratitude. "I missed this. Thank you all for believing in me." Tony grinned. "We never doubted you for a second."
As you flew back to the Tower, you felt at peace. You had faced your fears and overcome your challenges, stronger than ever before. With the support of your team and Natasha's love, you knew you were ready for whatever the future held.

TW: traffic accident, injury
â9-1-1, whatâs your emergency?â
âI crashed, into a tree, now my wife canât get out. Somebody please help us!â
------------------------------------------â
âVehicle collision with obstacle, aka car crashed into tree,â Bobby informs his team while guiding them towards the scene of the accident. âOne male driver, escaped the wreckage on his own, and one female passenger still trapped inside. Hen, Chimney, check her vitals. Buck, Eddie, go see if the driver needs any medical attention.â
âDUI?â Hen asks, clearly concerned by her past experience with councilwoman Ortiz.
âNo, I donât think so. Apparently the driver was alert and coherent enough to call 9-1-1 and explain their situation,â Bobby responses. âNow go help free the victim.â
Hen nods and takes off with Chimney.
âHi, my nameâs Hen. Whatâs yours?â
âJessicaâŠâ the woman sobs, visibly in shock.
âJessica, okay, weâre here to help you. I know itâs not easy, but please, try your best to relax,â Hen reassures her. âHey, Chim, take her vitals while I check on her wounds.â
Chimney simply puts the clip onto her finger, watch the monitor and wait. Sheâs doing surprisingly well in her state.
Until a worried expression from Hen extinguishes his optimism.
âFemoral artery,â Hen whisper in Chimneyâs ear.
He looks down to see a large mangled piece of metal protruding through Jessicaâs left thigh. Ironically, the foreign object causing her so much pain might be the only thing keeping her from bleeding out right away.
âThe driver is fine. The airbag saved him. He told me he was working long hours and fell asleep behind the wheel,â Eddie comes back with Buck. âIâd say let him stay with his wife. No law enforcement needed. He doesnât seem under the influence to me.â
âGood. We need a saw and some running water to cool things down here,â Chimney yells at Buck and Eddie.
âOh, god, are you amputating my leg?â Jessica panics. âIâve watched it on TV. This is the setup when you want to amputate someoneâs limb!â
âNo, Jessica, donât worry. TV shows arenât real,â Hen directs her team to get the necessary tools. âWeâre cutting the metal off and transporting you to a hospital with it. Theyâll keep you comfortable with medicine before they take the metal out of you, okay?â
Jessica nods faintly, trying her best to keep her body still.
âWe need to get her to a trauma center, stat,â Hen turns to her captain, âevery second she spends on the ground, the risk of the piece of metal accidentally dislodging multiplies.â
Bobby ponders for a few moment before speaking into his radio, âthis is the 118, at the scene of a traffic accident. Requesting air support for medevac.â
Buckâs entire body freezes once those dreaded words leave Bobbyâs mouth.
Heâs been fearful of this day since Tommy dumped him, almost 3 months ago. Just the two of them, meeting up for the first time since the breakup on a call, struggling to push the awkwardness aside and maintain a façade of professionalism, fighting against his urge to forget about the emergency and just yell at Tommy, to feel him, to devour him, to cling to him and never let go.
Still, thereâs a severely injured person whose life is hanging by a thread. Buck decides to shake off his overly active mind and help carry the heavy machinery to the patient.
âEddie, you handle the saw. Chim, you take the water. Hen, keep a close eye on her vitals,â Bobby instructs his team, intentionally leaving out one member.
âI â I can help, Cap,â Buck asserts.
âItâs not personal, but this requires the highest level of precision and concentration. You can take the next one, when the circumstances are a bit⊠different,â Bobby puts up a palm to stop his subordinate on his track, ânow, I need you to stay on the side and stand by.â
Buck complies, reluctantly.
The soaring sound of a helicopter rotor inches in merely minutes later.
Buck debates internally whether to hide or take a good look at the helicopter, to see if the pilot is Tommy. Itâll likely rip his heart out if he sees Tommy all rugged, brokenhearted from the breakup, but itâll kill him if Tommy looks normal, good even, seemingly moved on from his latest fling.
He decides to stand beside an engine when the helicopter lands on the freeway, in order to look without standing out.
âWhatâs the status of the patient?â A tall, blond Asian paramedic hops out of the helicopter, still putting on his gloves.
âWeâre still trying to free her,â Bobby says, with sharp, mechanical noise in the background.
âI think itâd be best if we avoid moving her too much,â another paramedic, a giant, burly man who puts the best body builder to shame, chimes in.
George and Carl, Buck recognizes. Theyâre in Tommyâs flight crew.
âUh, maybe we should bring the chopper closer?â Buck suggests.
âDonato, bring the bird closer,â George speaks into his radio.
âHow close?â Lucy replies.
âSo close you can smell my conditioner.â
âCopy that. Hey, why do I only get to do cool stuff when TommyâŠâ
âAhem,â Carl interrupts Lucyâs communication, âwe have company here, the 118.â
âUh⊠wilco. Iâm gonna bring her in, stay clear of the downwash.â
Carl directs all personnel on the ground to stand behind the 118 engine and make way for the aircraft. Buck catches George on his way to his destination.
âHey â Hey, George. Whereâs Tommy?â Buck asks, the fear of Tommy being in trouble enters his mind once again.
George sighs, then rolls his eyes, âyou wouldâve known if your so-called friends didnât pretend he never existed after your two broke up.â
âWhat happened to him? Is he hurt? Come on, I just want to know if heâs okay,â Buck pleads.
âOh, the patientâs out. Weâd better get going,â George ignores Buck, choosing to focus on his task at hand instead.
Buck emerges from behind the firetruck. The LAFD helicopter is now parked steps away from the wreckage of the car, thanks to Lucyâs piloting skills.
This is the last chance for Buck to investigate, before they fly away.
âCarl,â Buck knows for a fact that this man is soft and easily persuadable, despite the tough exterior, âplease tell me Tommyâs okay.â
âI guess youâll just have to ask him yourself,â Carl says, carrying the patient into the chopper.
âBut I thought he didnât want to talk to me. Iâve been giving him space,â Buck chases after the aeromedic.
âTake the initiative. Brave the ice,â Carl shouts before closing the door and flying away with his team.
